november sees SPARE PUPPETS THEATRE bring its exceptional puppetry and theatrical creativity to Mandurah Performing Are Centre for two performances of Shaun Tan’s The Arrival. Exploring a story of immigration, loneliness and discovery of the unknown, The Arrival resonates with any new experience, whether it’s starting a new school, a new job or moving to a new town. A show with no dialogue, the story relies on puppetry, the projection of Tan’s beautiful illustrations and an emotive score to convey the story. The adaptation of Tan’s story sees this fantastical world come to life in a strange and wonderful metropolis full of floating ships, mysterious lights, alien symbols and weird animals. Winner of the Western Australian Equity Guild Award for Best Production in 2006, Shaun Tan’s story has a unique ability to transcend social, cultural and age barriers. Tickets for the show are on sale now. To book, call 9550 3900 or go online at www.manpac.com.au

OEDIPUS SCHMOEDIPUS Mandurah Performing Arts Centre

Thurs 10 to Sat 12 Mar 2018 by post

TAKE SEVERAL HUNDRED OF THE GREATEST PLAYS of all time, pick out the death scenes, mix them together (in a cunning and clever way) and then…well, that’s a surprise! Oedipus Schmoedipus is a great big festival of shufflingoff-the-mortal-coil from Australia’s silliest and smartest theatre bunch: post. Their work is joyful and dark, stupid and smart, down-home and completely over the top. Oedipus Schmoedipus is their bid for theatre history – either to join it, or to wreck it. Fed up with white men staging the deaths of white men in plays written by white men, the white ladies from post have pirated the theatrical canon and turned over the juiciest stuff to seven hundred – that’s right, seven hundred collaborators! Death: it belongs to everyone! The Arrival photo by Rebecca Mansell 10 WHAT’S ON

SHADES OF SUMMER

It’s time to herald a new season of fashion bursting with uplifting colours, fluidity and romantic silhouettes.

The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert. Sensual and soft – tones of rose, blush and blossom pink are high in demand when it comes to this season’s latest colours. Wear these shades head to toe for a polished, head-turning monochrome look or get all chic by teaming them with black separates. This palette works exceptionally well with this season’s silky-satin fabrics, making pieces look beautifully shiny and fluid. For a bolder spring/summer look, chilli red, rust and crimson are also set to feature prominently. Fashion is still loving the big sleeve. Whether it is bell, ruffled, batwing, blouson or puff, it’s a feminine statement and very much here to stay. Again, silky fabrics work wonders with volume, helping pieces to look light and carefree, perfect for warmer days. The deconstructed shirt is another trend that has transitioned the seasons with oversized

... for a polished, headturning monochrome look ... cuffs, asymmetrical collars, cut outs, tiered hems or voluminous sleeves. It’s a great way to liven up both office wear and weekend dressing. Essential items for the months ahead include voluminous blouses and dresses with romantic features, such as frills, micro pleat detailing and ruffles. Raw hemmed, ankle grazing jeans or high waisted culottes are perfect for the season – tuck in a camisole or an off-the-shoulder top to help give legs that extra-long appeal. And, it goes without saying that owning a lace, sheer or silky slip dress is bound to impress. Then just make sure you invest in a tailored jacket, with or without a collar, in black or a soft tone of white to finish off any office outfit as well as to complete an evening look. Makeup for this time of year is usually extremely subtle or cleverly applied to appear natural and nude - it’s the classic spring and summer look. However, this season is set to showcase a bright orangey-red lip that perfectly represents the feel of glorious Australian weather and endless days in the sun. Or, to draw attention to eyes, use a blush tone with the option of a little bronzer on top and then just add a gloss for lips. Highlighter is a prerequisite for spring for that fresh and youthful luminous look - add it to high points and even mix in a little gold for evenings out. 16 STYLE

THE KITCHEN I n n o vat i o n t o t h e f o r e

Kitchens are becoming larger and more tech-focused. Despite recent trends to bring back the traditional formal dining room, today’s homeowners want more space and more of the latest technological innovations than ever. It’s a social thing. We all want to spend time together in the home and not just during mealtimes. So for a living space such as the kitchen, a space that gets plenty of use during the day, there are an increasing number 26 HOME & GARDEN

of functional demands required to satisfy the whole family. This is where innovative technology can help us to get the most out of our kitchen. Whether it’s a phone, a tablet or a laptop, devices

have become integral to a modern family’s everyday life. Having an area designated for chargers and USB ports is, therefore, essential for any kitchen design. These can be integrated into the worktop, hidden in a drawer or a butler’s pantry, or within a separate study or work nook set up against a window, to help give a relaxed café-style look to the room.

Take technology a step further and download the latest apps for the home. There are now apps that can even view the contents of a fridge to check which ingredients are required for dinner or for the school lunch box. Apps can also help in deciding the best

programme for a load of washing, can switch on and preheat the oven before the homeowner arrives home and also inform when the roast that is being cooked has reached its temperature. Double ovens are being replaced by steam ovens and convection ovens for baking and roasting. Today’s ovens produce better and fresher results than a microwave and although microwaves still play a part in the kitchen, typically these are no longer housed within the usual oven stack, instead they are now placed under the worktop alongside drawers. Fridges, too, are undergoing innovative changes. Instead of one large unit, it now makes sense to have separate refrigerator drawers as part of the kitchen’s streamlined cabinetry - situated where they are most needed. The freezer, for example, which is not accessed as often as other parts of the fridge, can be placed away from the main working hub of the kitchen, thereby freeing up more storage space. Clean lines have been popular in kitchens for some time, and removing small appliances from worktops

is an easy way to achieve this look. More and more kitchens are being designed so that appliances can be stowed within cabinetry or in a butler’s pantry. A recent innovation in homes is to install a tap that produces instant boiling water on demand, which gets rid of the need to find space for the kettle. Taking this streamlined idea to a new level are the latest kitchen worktops that look like beautiful ceramic entertaining spaces yet they hide an induction hob within. These enable the preparation, cooking and eating of dinner to be done all within the one space. Imagine being able to switch mood enhancing lights on and off, turn on a tap or open a door just by moving a hand. It seems far-fetched but it’s easily achievable with today’s technology. As is using voice commands to preheat an oven or switch off an appliance. Of course, new innovations often come at a price but with the amount of living we all do in the kitchen these days, it makes sense to invest in technology and enjoy the lifestyle it brings.

OUTDOOR KITCHENS

T

he outdoor kitchen continues to grow in popularity with the simple grill on the patio increasingly being replaced by a fully functioning alfresco cooking area. So what considerations should be made when planning an outdoor kitchen? To get the most from the new cooking space, try and make the area a natural extension of the existing home and living space, and, if possible, build it into existing outdoor structures. For those designing an area from scratch, choose a location that's easily accessible to the house. This will mean less distance to carry food and drinks and will also create a natural flow from inside to out. Make sure it has convenient access to electrical wiring, gas lines and plumbing and always ensure materials are weather resistant and easy to clean. Marine grade stainless steel is always a good choice for the outdoors. 30 HOME & GARDEN

An outdoor kitchen can be fitted with a wide range of options, including pizza ovens, refrigerators, ice makers and wine coolers. Perhaps consider installing an outdoor fireplace or fire pit to allow for all year round use. Always ensure that the area is comfortable and inviting with plenty of seating for family and friends to relax, and how about finishing off the area with an outdoor entertainment system and well thought out lighting to add atmosphere? Looking for further information? Local outdoor kitchen specialists Merlin Cabinets specialise in creating both custom built barbecue areas and outdoor kitchens. Using materials that are 100% waterproof and weather resistant, the team can organise all trades for the project and design a kitchen to fit any lifestyle. Order now for summer on 9584 2822 or visit the showroom at Unit 3, 14 Thornborough Road.

HOME CINEMAS

T

he home theatre; it’s an essential part of any home design. It’s great place to spend time with family and friends and the perfect room to escape from the hectic pace of life while diving into a favourite film or show. However, the overall experience can be seriously compromised without a true cinematic set-up. Today’s custom designed home theatres are a world away from the poor sound and vision packages that most of us grew up with and they are much more accessible that you might think. Not only have they become much more affordable, speaker technology has progressed to such an extent that they can perform perfectly even in the smaller rooms in the home. Designs are available for spare room theatres, apartments and even bedrooms. Screens can also be set up in areas of the home that previously seemed impossible due to lighting or space issues. A custom-designed and fully installed home theatre creates the ultimate getaway in the home. Take time to design a dream media room by keeping up with the latest technology and trends and by using custom-made home theatre furniture. Architecturally-inspired speaker design can complement any home decor; some even allow a completely concealed installation by being retracted into ceiling spaces, cabinets and walls when not in use. Create the best audio and visual experience by taking into account the shape of the room and by carefully researching the leading brands on the market. Don’t forget to set the mood with the right colours throughout the room and add special design elements, such as colour changing lighting or optic star ceilings. Finally, add the cherry on the top with the latest automation systems and universal remotes. Mediatek, part of The Home Hub, are Mandurah’s leading experts in designing and installing custom home cinemas. With a team of licensed contractors on hand and with over 20 years’ experience in AV, discover a huge range of customisable products to suit all budgets. Land Rover Discovery

All new SUV gets highly impressive makeover

T

wenty-seven years since the release of the Series 1 in the UK, the Land Rover Discovery remains one of the world's most recognisable SUVs. And, almost 3 decades on, with over a million units sold worldwide, our love affair with the ‘Disco’ seems to show no sign of abating with the release of the fifth generation model. Part of the appeal of the Land Discovery has always been the fact that you kind of always know what you get with a Discovery. Its look hasn’t really changed that much since the late 80’s and, although subsequent models have introduced plenty of technology over the years, it is a car that often appeals to the traditionalist. However, the all-new Discovery seems to making a bold and concerted effort to shake off that slightly conservative tag. Firstly, it’s a car that looks significantly different to the outgoing model. Shedding its more rugged boxy-style lines, its new-found curves and contemporary profile have obviously taken their design 44 MOTORING

cues from the Discovery Sport but at the same time lifted the whole profile of the car. It’s still unmistakeably a Discovery but a huge departure from its predecessor. Inside, the Discovery has stepped up another gear with a noticeable upgrade to its materials and finish. Indeed, with its sumptuous cabin and interior ambience, one could be mistaken for thinking that it was, in fact, the inside of a class-leading Range Rover. With versatile space for seven full-sized adults, the Discovery’s seating can be configured from a smartphone, using worldfirst remote Intelligent Seat Fold technology. Plus, all models come with an InControl media screen that can be used for navigation, media playback and apps. Powered by a selection of Jaguar Land Rover’s highly efficient diesel engines, the introduction of the brand’s award-winning Ingenium diesel power plants to the latest Discovery, paired with a smooth-shifting eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox, have significantly improved both performance and emission levels. The 132kW 2.0L Ingenium Td4 diesel is the most fuel-

efficient Discovery to date with CO² emissions of 163g/ km and a fuel economy of 6.3L per 100km. Providing 430Nm of torque, to deliver the Discovery’s customary towing power, the Td4 powers from 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds. A high powered Sd4 version of the engine with 177kW and 500Nm of torque is also available for those looking for that extra bit of performance. Reaching 100km/h from a standing start in just 8.3 seconds, the car is still capable of achieving an economy rating of 6.5L per 100km. The new Discovery is also available with a powerful 190kW 3.0L V6 diesel, badged as the Td6. This single-turbo engine propels the car from 0-100km/h in a mightily impressive 8.1 seconds while still achieving CO² emissions of 189g/km and fuel economy of 7.2L per 100km. In keeping with the rest of the all-new Discovery’s striking upgrades, the very latest driver technologies all feature on the latest model. Terrain Response technology and, following its introduction on the Range Rover Evoque, All-Terrain Progress Control

technology, both come as standard. Advanced Tow Assist, a feature that takes the stress out of reversing by allowing the driver to guide a trailer, horsebox or caravan into position without using the steering wheel,

“... one of the world’s most recognisable SUVs ...” and Rear Height Adjust, which allows the driver to lower and raise the height of the rear of the vehicle to make hitching a trailer simpler, are other clever touches. Incredibly practical, super spacious and equally at home whether on or off-road, the all new Discovery offers a compelling package. Land Rover is onto an absolute winner here. MOTORING 45

GOLF TIPS W I T H C R A I G TA P P

H

i Mandurah golfers! I hope you are all playing well and holing plenty of putts.

Now that the warmer weather is here, I am seeing plenty of golfers out on the range blowing off the cobwebs and trying to get their golf game into shape. And it can be extremely comical to observe the way most go about easing themselves back into the game. Straight to the driver, then an almighty attack at the golf ball, then the grimace of pain as they almost rupture their spleen or pop their kidney! So I thought I might give a bit of simple advice on how to get your golf game back in order without having to feed on a diet of Nurofen Plus and Voltarin. Now, before you switch off thinking that I’m going to try and sell you a full yoga stretching program, listen up as there are a couple of very easy things that can be done to help ease back into the groove. Firstly, once at the driving range, simply grab two clubs and make some nice long smooth swings to help stretch all those relevant golf muscles. Next, simply tie your shoe laces a little tighter and give your hamstrings and lower back a little stretch. Great, now we are ready to hit some shots! The first club to drag out of the bag should be the wedge. Start by hitting 8 to 10 half swings to help get everything moving and to get a feel of where the clubface and path is. Now move up to the 9 iron, also hitting 8 to 10 three-quarter shots, slowly increasing the tempo as you progress. The next club to use is the 6 or 7 iron and we should now start to make some full swings. At this stage, don’t be concerned about where the ball is heading, just get all those body parts moving

46 SPORT & RECREATION

in the correct sequence. Time for a hybrid or fairway wood and 8 to 10 more balanced swings. For those not exhausted by now, it is now time to bring out the The Big Dog. Most golfers, when hitting the driver, tend to expect more distance and start hitting harder and harder. This throws the swing all out of sequence. I would like to see golfers hit 2 drivers then 2 irons followed by 2 drivers and 2 wedges. This will keep the swing in balance and start developing good patterns. This is the perfect way to get back into golf. Once you have had a few of these sessions, then it’s time to start thinking about making some swing changes to improve results. Remember, taking golf advice from friends or family can often do more harm than good. Golf has gone through some amazing changes over the last few years so book a lesson with a PGA Teaching Professional and develop increased knowledge on the underlying principles and physics on what makes a golf ball go where it does. You will also have a lot more fun playing this wonderful game. Good luck and good golfing!

Establish an easy to follow, sustainable nutritional plan that can be maintained for the rest of your life. Short term diets will only provide short term results. Eat foods that are easy to obtain, easy to prepare and foods that you and your family currently enjoy eating. Aim for foods that provide good nutrition, varying foods to minimise any deficiencies. Food consumed from fresh and natural sources will provide optimal nutrition value, contain less calories, preservatives and additives and in the long run be 100 per cent better for you.

Carry a bottle of water around all day and measure how much water you are consuming. Buy a water filter jug for the home or invest in a water filter for your tap to ensure top quality water, free of chlorine and other impurities. Increase the intake of water for more active days.

5

E at f i v e o r s i x m e a l s e a c h d ay

When calorie intake is lowered, the body’s metabolism naturally slows down. To ensure that it doesn’t slow too much, eat five to six small, low-fat meals every day. Eat three meals that are made up of carbohydrates, protein and fat and two to three small, protein only meals.

6

Plan and prepare meals

By planning and preparing meals for the week, it’s possible to know exactly what you are consuming while saving both time and money.

Avoid starving yourself. This will only increase the fat stored in the body and can lead to binge eating. If you are thinking of food too often this could be due to a low blood sugar level, dehydration, a nutrient deficiency or simply because you haven’t eaten enough.

This calorie measurement is found to be the absolute minimum calorie intake to achieve weight-loss without causing nutritional deficiencies. This measurement ensures energy levels remain high and that the metabolism doesn’t slow too much. Note, this is the minimum. If active, increase the calorie intake so that the body has enough energy to function correctly.

Try to eat your largest meal at the start of the day when your body needs the energy most. As the day progresses, decrease the size of the portions and the amount of carbohydrates consumed.

10

M o d e r at e a l c o h o l consumption

Alcohol is a poison to the body that gets metabolised quicker and takes priority over other macro nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Consuming an intake greater than 1 to 3 glasses a week will limit weight loss results and increase the storage of fat in cells.

U n d e r s ta n d i n g Wrinkle Relaxers

I

BY DR ARGERO XAFTELLIS

n 2016, Australians spent nearly $1b on cosmetic procedures, with wrinkle relaxers being the most common non-surgical procedure. Since treatments can vary considerably between clinics, it is important that all patients considering these treatments fully understand their procedure to ensure maximal results, value for money and safety. Wrinkle relaxers, or botulin therapy, are made from a naturally occurring substance that is purified to medical standards. They work by blocking the message sent from the nerve to the muscle in a chosen area over a period of three months to six months depending upon the dose, a patient's genetics and years of use. Wrinkle relaxers are most commonly used around the eyes, between the eyes, on the forehead and for the ‘bunny’ lines on the nose. It is a safe treatment when performed by fully trained medical personnel. Injector training varies from a two-hour course to undertaking a full degree specialising in cosmetic medicine over a number of years. All training is at the injectors’ expense and is a part of the cost of the treatment. Ongoing medical education is essential for safety, especially when procedures do not go smoothly. Wrinkle relaxers are a restricted drug, ‘Scheduled 4’, which means before a nurse can legally treat, a doctor must have consulted the patient. In Australia, there are three Government approved wrinkle relaxers; Botox®, Xeomin® and Dysport®. All are equally effective if given in recommended doses but Dysport® requires a 2.5x correction for every unit of Botox®/Xeomin®. This is important when considering price as Dysport® will initially appear cheaper with cost per unit enquiries. The recommended dose is 20 Botox®/Xeomin® units (50 Dysport®) per area for patients either over 35 years or with strong muscle groups. The exception to this is

the forehead. Younger patients may be happy with just 10 Botox® units per area. For maximal longevity, a full block is needed. This will still look natural for most patients. A full block gives best value as treatment intervals may extend over time. Some clinics offer free top-ups two weeks later to maximal block, whilst others a token top-up. The best value option for most patients is thus to purchase per area with a top-up to full block included in the price. Patients should consider value, not price, when on a budget, taking into account injector qualifications, experience, doses, top-ups and aftercare. A good aesthetically trained doctor will be able to make an assessment of a patient’s muscle strength, desired results and budget and offer a range of solutions. It is important that patients do their research too before attending a cosmetic clinic and present with a realistic open mind. During the consultation, always ask questions and be happy with the answers before proceeding with any treatment. Never treat if you feel unsure. Wrinkle relaxers are a very satisfying and affordable treatment when done well.

ACUPUNCTURE W h at i s a c u p u n c t u r e ?

Acupuncture is the traditional Chinese treatment of inserting fine needles into specific points on the skin and applying various techniques on these points to bring about healing. Dating back over thousands of years, the foundation of Chinese acupuncture is taken from the theory that the body is made up of Qi (pronounced chee), the life energy that exists in everybody and everything. The Qi travels along 12 primary channels or meridians within the body and while there is balance between those meridians, then health presides. When imbalances occur, due to factors including diet, lifestyle or emotional trauma, the body will begin to display symptoms. By inserting fine needles into particular acupuncture points, the imbalances can be corrected and the flow of QI restored. Research has found that treatment can be effective in treating a number of different ailments. These include digestive problems, emotional issues, including anxiety and depression, and a range of general ailments from chronic fatigue syndrome to giving up smoking, muscle injuries, obesity, and stress. Other areas such as gynaecological, neurological and respiratory problems can also be treated.

56 HEALTH & BEAUTY

How is acupuncture performed?

Pre-sterilised disposable needles are used. Depending on the location of the treatment, the patient will either sit or lie down. Properly done, acupuncture is painless as needles are extremely fine (around 0.2mm in width). Once inserted, the patient may feel mild tingling around the site, warmth or heaviness, or even nothing at all. Acupuncturists may use other techniques as well as the use of needles.

A f e e l i n g o f r e l a x at i o n

After a session of acupuncture, patients normally feel relaxed and refreshed, but specific responses depend on the individual. Some people feel energised, while others feel sleepy. Patients should be advised that symptoms can sometimes get a little worse before they improve. The number of treatments needed depends on the condition. In most cases, patients experience a reduction in symptoms within a few sessions.

Choosing an acupuncturist

Some health care practitioners offer acupuncture after completing a short course. However, the philosophy of acupuncture is complex so you should only use a suitably qualified acupuncturist.

E A R LY C H I L D H O O D E D U C AT I O N

The early years of a child’s education provide the essential building blocks for a future life of learning. A shaky start can undermine confidence in learning whereas a solid beginning will set children on a pathway to achieve full learning potential. But what are the key factors to take into consideration when choosing a school for your child? Here are three important factors that should be considered when choosing an early childhood education.

sense of connection for children between home and school. Natural play equipment can also connect children with nature and help them develop many skills. However, the emotional environment in early childhood education plays a far greater role than the physical. An environment of nurture and care where every child gets individual attention to help develop their unique gifts is key.

W h at W I L L T H E Y L E A R N ?

A good early years’ learning environment is not completely structured and teacher–directed, but leaves room for children to initiate activities and explore the world through play. This does not mean that anything goes whilst the teacher has a cup of tea. No! The teacher is actively involved in the play process, guiding and activating the learning. This approach is called play-based learning and it is important to get the balance right between playing and learning. When the balance is right, magic can happen. “Research shows that children who engage in complex forms of sociodramatic play have greater language skills than nonplayers, better social skills, more empathy, more imagination and more of the subtle capacity to know what others mean. They are less aggressive and show more self-control and higher levels of thinking.”1 Isn’t that the firm foundation we all want for our children?

The early years are a wonderful time of investigation and exploration. Whilst it’s important that children are introduced early on to the world of books, letters and numbers, research has demonstrated that too much of a narrow focus on literacy and numeracy in the early years has detrimental effects on children’s learning later in life. A good early years’ education will provide a balanced diet of learning about and through the arts, the sciences, through physical activities as well as literacy and numeracy. Children should also be encouraged to develop their social, emotional, critical and creative thinking skills.

WHERE WILL THEY LEARN?

The physical environment in early years’ classrooms is vitally important to establish a

the future is written in code

C

BY LOUISE CLARK

oding? Isn’t that writing notes with numbers and symbols instead of letters? Not anymore. Coding is the new buzzword in education and it’s all about making computers do what you want them to do. It is a list of instructions that command and communicate with computers to make software, games, apps and websites, and children, as young as five, are learning how to do it. It might sound unrealistic to try to teach computer coding to such children at such a young age but other countries are, at present, way ahead of Australia in investing time, money and energy into coding. They are also giving it a high priority in their respective curriculums. For example, Estonia introduced coding to primary schools in 2012 with the UK following suite 60 EDUCATION

in 2014. Australia, however, only added coding to its curriculum last year. And out of 44 competing countries, Russian and Chinese students dominated in this year’s International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals – in other words, the computer programming Olympics – winning 9 out of the top 14 places. So do our young pre-primaries grasp the concepts of coding? Of course, when students start off learning about coding, it is delivered to them in an age and developmentally appropriate way. Students begin by taking part in directional games and then go on to build robots from Lego and programme them to move. In time, students will learn how to create new sound effects with code, educational apps and games, and even computerised systems for daily chores.

We already know that teaching children skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) will significantly help them to secure employment in a highly competitive global market, well, now it’s time to add coding to the list. It will prepare our children for the jobs of the future; jobs which do not yet exist. Automation is replacing human input in employment in so many areas, such as office staff, farm workers, accountants and checkout staff. New jobs will surface for those who are able to code computers to do work that we previously did ourselves, and we need our children to be able to invent and innovate and be the ones to hold these jobs. Coding will play a key part in helping to make Australia's future workforce competitive on a global level. Louise Clark has studied and taught across all age groups in the British and Australian schooling and college systems.

There’s also a regular Oyster of the Month, which on our visit was Fiery Mexicanos, grilled oysters with spicy salsa and jalapenos topped with nachos, cheese and guacamole. Mmm, delicious! However, much as we all love our oysters at The Mandurah Life, on this particular visit we were here to try something a bit different. Catering for all tastes, not just oyster aficionados, Oyster Bar Mandurah offers

plenty of choice for those not enamoured with the little molluscs and its Temptations menu is proving equally as popular. The mouth-watering line-up of dishes on this menu certainly provided a tough choice for our lunchtime visit. Featuring a selection of smaller entrées, platters (Seafood and Antipasto) and fabulous salads, there’s also a great range of smaller sharing plates, including Salt & Pepper Squid, Prawn Twisters, Garlic Prawns and Chorizo, Bruschetta and Chicken and Garlic Balls. The list goes on! However, after careful consideration, we just had to try one of the restaurant’s signature dishes: The Oyster Bar Grazing Plate. This beautifully-presented, generously-sized dish comes laden with the very best from the Temptations menu and is guaranteed to get the taste buds flowing. Our particular version included Crumbed Haloumi with Cranberry Sauce (worth the visit alone), Honey and Soy Prawns, an Antipasto Mix of feta cheese and chorizo, some fabulous Cheese and Bacon Potato Skins, Salt and Pepper Squid, Garlic Bread and Sweet Potato Chips. The dish changes on a daily basis and Spicy BBQ and Honey Meatballs and Satay Chicken Sliders are just some of the other dishes often included. Wow, what a treat, a hugely enjoyable dish and one that will definitely have us coming back for another try. Yes, the oysters are plentiful and appetizing but there is much to enjoy for everyone on this well-crafted menu. With great views and attentive and friendly service, a visit comes highly recommended. introducing ... windfall estate Award-winning Geographe winery rebrands

regular readers of The Mandurah Life will be familiar with award-winning Geographe winery Bonking Frog wines and its mix of delicious, mainly merlot, varieties and all things frog related. Well, after seven years, owners Julie and Phil Hutton have decided to undergo a rebrand, a decision that has been heavily influenced by the estate’s early beginnings. “We’ve got a lot of history on this property,” says Julie, “It’s been in the family since 1949, having been purchased by my grandfather with compensation money he received after losing his hand while a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC). It’s quite a story and one that deserves to be told! So we’ve decided a brand refresher is in order, whilst still maintaining a

connection to the varied and celebrated frog population on the property.” Three key brands will head up the wines at Windfall Estate and first availability is expected in late 2017. Ivor is the estate’s Reserve Merlot and is named in honour of Julie’s grandfather, Ivor ‘Dah’ Williams. This is a wine of distinction and it is only fitting that it is named after Ivor, a loving grandfather, smart businessman and the very reason why Windfall Wine Estate calls both North Boyanup and Bunbury home. Single-handed consists of a Merlot, Rosé and Chardonnay. This collection of wines has been named in honour of Dah’s achievements, who, despite the loss of his hand, successfully built a business of his own, amassing property across Bunbury and North Boyanup. It is also named as homage to Julie and Phil’s success, who turned a Lotto win into a thriving Merlot vineyard, producing award-winning wines. Julie and Phil have worked tirelessly, planting and grafting the vineyard

themselves by hand to get it where it is today. Frog Song is the winery’s tribute to Bonking Frog and the diverse and healthy frog species that populate the property, featuring Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. Maintaining a healthy frog population has always been important to Julie and Phil and, over the last seven years, the winery has learnt to encompass a range of biodynamic principles. “It is our great joy to hear the variety of frog songs singing out, an indication of how our efforts are positively impacting the environment,” says Julie. The winery’s cellar door is now closed to the general public on a daily basis but exciting plans are afoot. Having hosted a number of successful events over the years, the extra free time will be used to organise bigger and more frequent events at the property. Information on these upcoming events together with news on new releases can be found at www.bonkingfrog.com.au
