tuesday 14th november sees Spare Puppets Theatre bring its exceptional puppetry and theatrical creativity to BREC for a performance of Shaun Tan’s The Arrival. Exploring a story of immigration, loneliness and discovery of the unknown, The Arrival resonates with any new experience, whether it’s starting a new school, a new job or moving to a new town. A show with no dialogue, the story 12 WHAT’S ON

relies on puppetry, the projection of Tan’s beautiful illustrations and an emotive score to convey the story. The adaptation of Tan’s story sees this fantastical world come to life in a strange and wonderful metropolis full of floating ships, mysterious lights, alien symbols and weird animals. Winner of the Western Australian Equity Guild Award for Best Production in 2006, Shaun Tan’s story has a unique ability to

transcend social, cultural and age barriers. BREC’s General Manager Sharon Custers worked on the first production of The Arrival with Spare Parts Puppet Theatre in 2006 and is thrilled to bring the revival to Bunbury. “It was such an amazing time working on The Arrival and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it’s evolved and changed since I worked on the project,” says Custers. “As soon as I knew The

SPRING SHADES

It’s time to herald a new season of fashion bursting with uplifting colours, fluidity and romantic silhouettes. The latest fashion trends from The Bunbury Life’s resident fashion expert. Sensual and soft – tones of rose, blush and blossom pink are high in demand when it comes to this season’s latest colours. Wear these shades head to toe for a polished, head-turning monochrome look or get all chic by teaming them with black separates. This palette works exceptionally well with this season’s silky-satin fabrics, making the pieces look beautifully shiny and fluid. For a bolder spring look, chilli red, rust and crimson are also set to feature prominently. Fashion is still loving the big sleeve. Whether it is bell, ruffled, batwing, blouson or puff, it’s a feminine statement and

very much here to stay. Again, silky fabrics work wonders with volume helping pieces to look light and carefree, perfect for warmer days. The deconstructed shirt is another trend that has transitioned the seasons with oversized cuffs, asymmetrical collars, cut outs, tiered hems or voluminous sleeves. It’s a great way to liven up both office wear and weekend dressing. Essential items for the months ahead include voluminous blouses and dresses with romantic features, such as frills, micro pleat detailing and ruffles. Raw hemmed, ankle grazing jeans or high waisted culottes are perfect for the season – tuck in a camisole or an off-

... voluminous blouses and dresses with romantic features, such as frills, micro pleat detailing and ruffles ... the-shoulder top to help give legs that extra-long appeal. And, it goes without saying that owning a lace, sheer or silky slip dress is an absolute necessity. Invest in a tailored jacket, with or without a collar, in black or a soft tone of white to finish off an office outfit as well as complete an evening look. Makeup for this time of year is usually extremely subtle or cleverly applied to appear natural and nude - it’s the classic spring look. However, this season is set to showcase a bright orangey-red lip that perfectly represents the feel of glorious Australian weather and endless days in the sun. Or, to draw attention to eyes, use a blush tone with the option of a little bronzer on top and then just add a gloss for lips. Highlighter is a prerequisite for spring for that fresh and youthful luminous look - add it to high points and even mix in a little gold for evenings out. 18 STYLE

SPRING GARDENING

W

ith winter over and spring finally upon us, now is the time to carry out a few essential tasks to ready the garden for the warm weather ahead.

Citrus Plants

Now is the perfect opportunity to give citrus plants that extra bit of attention to ensure a healthy flourishing crop that delivers some sweet tasting rewards. Fertilise during spring with a mixture of citrus food and general fertiliser. Also, to ensure good growth, always remove the grass growth directly below citrus plants as their roots feed close to the surface and the grass deprives them of food. Citrus plants also like a good mulching, so spread it out evenly around them, leaving a gap around the trunk. It’s also worth thinking about protecting the plants

from fruit fly damage during the spring and summer by hanging traps in trees or shrubs surrounding the fruit.

Re-Potting

The start of spring is an important time to think about re-potting plants that are now outgrowing their containers. Did you know that during the spring months over 90% of growth occurs? Also think about re-potting plants that haven’t been moved for the last couple of years or so as the potting mix may no longer be effective.

Herbs

Again, this is the most important time for herb gardens. Ideally, grow them in containers so that they can be easily watered and don’t forget to ensure the containers are big enough to allow expansion. Remember, always use good quality potting mix. When

sowing seeds, cover them with a layer of potting mix, firm them down, and make sure they are kept moist during the germination stage. For saplings, water the plants in their containers about half an hour before planting. Be careful the hole made in the new pot is big enough and will not squash the roots.

Roses

Remember to fertilise roses during the spring period. Hopefully most of the hard work will have been done during the winter, including pruning and re-planting so this should be just a quick job. Rose foods are available but if already growing citrus, save another trip to the nursery as citrus food will suffice. Finally, don’t forget to adjust the reticulation in time for the warmer weather ahead.

T

he Rink, the south west’s leading roller and inline skating centre, is once again eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Oceania Artistic Roller Skating Championships taking place in Queensland in September. Held annually and featuring the top Australian and New Zealand artistic skaters, along with occasional competitors from Asia, the championships will see the Bunbury-based centre have no less than nine competitors representing Australia across a total of fourteen different events. Ranging from 14 years to 50 years of age, the Bunbury group of skaters is headed up by last year’s multi-winner Andrew Beattie, who in last year’s championships held in Wanganui, New Zealand, won the Cadet Figures, Cadet Solo Dance, the Youth Dance Couples with Jasmine Williams and was also part of the Quartets team, which finished second. Andrew, who took up skating after attending a friend’s birthday party at The Rink, managed to achieve all of this despite being in recovery from a broken arm sustained just five weeks before leaving for the championships. Other notable skaters from The Rink representing their country in September include Andrew’s skating partner Jasmine Williams, and husband and wife skaters Martin and Rhonda Bright. Last year, Martin won the Men’s Masters Figures while Rhonda came third in the Ladies Masters Figures. Laura Carerra, who came third in the Youth Ladies Solo Dance in New Zealand, will also be competing again. To be held from 20th to 24th September in Mount Warren, about a half hour drive from Brisbane, Head coach of The Rink Susan Brook will be accompanying her skaters throughout the trip and has high hopes for her team. “They are a hard-working, well-motivated and highly talented bunch and we are quietly confident in achieving even more success for both the south west of WA and Australia,” says Susan. Located at Gibbons Road, Davenport, for further information on inline skating at The Rink, call 9725 6999 or visit www.therink.com.au for general skating and class times.

T

welve months after reporting on the release of the Tiger Sport, we now take a look at Triumph’s impressive new Tiger 800. Part of a model range that includes world famous brands, such as the Daytona, Thunderbird and Bonneville, it could be said that the Tiger has occasionally been slightly overshadowed by its more famous siblings. However, underestimate this bike at your peril. The all new Triumph Tiger 800 offers plenty of grunt mixed with a wealth of style. Built to excel as a highly capable adventure bike, whatever the terrain and whatever the challenge, the Tiger 800, with its host of rider-focused technology, including Traction Control and ABS and powerful, fuel efficient 95PS triple engine, is up to the task. Available in two separate guises, the touring-focused XR range offers an agile purposeful option for riders looking for both comfortable long distance biking or reliable everyday use. Featuring 19-inch cast wheels at the front and a superbly orientated chassis, the bike’s versatility clearly shines through. Or choose from the XC range with its serious off-road

capabilities, responsive chassis and torque-laden engine. With premium WP suspension as standard and 21-inch spoked wheels at the rear, the XC will handle all on and off road conditions with effortless ease. Fitted with a second generation 800cc engine complete with a gearbox selector mechanism derived directly from the class leading Daytona, both ranges feature the latest ride-by-wire throttle system proving smooth power delivery, improved response and lower emissions. Triumph claims a huge 17 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency on the all new Tiger and, with its large 19 litre fuel tank, there’s plenty of range for those extended rides. The longer trips will also give riders a chance to enjoy the updated technologies now available on the Tiger. A stylish LCD screen with ambient temperature, time and journey distance display now has extended information available, including journey time, average speed, average fuel consumption, range to empty and instantaneous fuel consumption on the XRx and XCx models. Handguards, heated grips, LED fog lights and solid aluminium panniers with a capacity of 37 litres and quick release system are just a few of the many accessories available. Whether taking on tough terrain off-road, riding long distances or tackling the daily commute, the all new Tiger 800 is the perfect companion. It’s a worthy addition to the already thrilling Triumph line-up.

Refinancing A Home Loan BY THEO KRINOS

A

t Smartline, we highly recommend that home owners regularly assess their current home loan arrangements to see if refinancing an existing debt makes financial sense. So if you are looking to improve on your current home loan deal, here are five essential factors to consider.

1. Do The Sums

There is no point in refinancing unless the end result is a better financial position. Therefore, it’s always important to take into account any fees and charges incurred when breaking a loan agreement. Fixed interest rate loans often have break costs and variable rate loans may incur discharge fees. Weigh up the costs against any potential gains made.

2. Work Out The Cost To Refinance

It’s also important to take into account costs attached to a new loan, such as application and annual fees. Again, work out the expected costs against the potential gains. 32 PROPERTY & FINANCE

3. Assess Which Loans Suit Best

Refinancing gives a good opportunity to assess the different types of loan available. The three main types of loans are Fixed Rate loans, Variable Interest loans and loans that combine an element of both. The right loan for an individual’s personal circumstances will depend on a variety of factors together with the borrower’s views on future interest rate movements. Plus, don’t forget to consider other features, such as redraw, offset facilities or the ability to be able to make additional loan payments.

4 . R e c o n s i d e r L o a n Va l u e s

Consider the amount to be borrowed. If moving to another lender, now could be the time to take advantage of a better interest rate and top up the loan for other purposes. For example, part of the new loan could be put towards a child’s education, the purchase of an investment property or a renovation of the family home.

Smart Mortgage Advice It makes sense to get your own Personal Mortgage Adviser. Your home loan can make the difference between a good and a great property investment. • compare loans on offer from over 25 top lenders • help in choosing the right loan tailored to your needs • you can visit our offices or we can visit you after hours

9791 4177 smartline.com.au/bunbury1 32 Stirling St, Bunbury Australian Credit Licence 385325

5 . C o n s o l i d at e D e b t s

When refinancing, take a look at the opportunity to roll other current higher interest debts into one low interest loan. Adding personal loans or credit card debt to a home loan can reduce the overall cost of borrowing and can mean paying just one set of fees instead of multiple fees for multiple loans. Bear in mind, however, that if these smaller outstanding loans have only a few years to run, it may not make financial sense to refinance to a longer term loan with added interest payments. Whatever your financial position, always seek out an experienced mortgage adviser to help find the best possible financial outcome.

Tax TIME

I

By Phil Di Candilo

t would seem that the accountant is everyone’s favourite person at this time of the year! And, with the use of cloud-based technology and ready-access to everything online, the good news is that our clients are getting more and more organised each year. It’s a great time of the year for us as the work comes in early and is constant from mid-July through to the end of September. After that, we need to start rounding up the remaining clients to help them get their tax lodged. These are usually clients who have a tax bill and are in no rush to get the tax lodgement done. One asset the accountant now has is the ability to get a great deal of the required information direct from the tax office via myGov. While this is handy for those preparing their own returns, it is also extremely useful for us. The information we can gather from this source includes PAYG summaries, bank interest and listed company dividends received, private health statements, details of share sales, a total of PAYG instalments that have been made and prior year tax return details.

While there have not been any changes in reporting dates, I thought it timely to run through them. Business Activity Statements (BAS) are due 28 days after each quarter’s end or if lodging monthly then it is 21 days after each month’s end. (December quarter BAS is due to be lodged by 28th February). Superannuation for employees is due 28 days after quarter’s end (no extensions) and now employers are lodging via Super Stream, the tax office will be on top of 34 PROPERTY & FINANCE

those who are late. The earliest date for the lodgement of income tax returns for most businesses and individuals is 31st March, nine months after year end. Exceptions to this are available for new entities with a deadline of 28th February. Note, the 31st October lodgement deadline is for those tax payers who lodge their own tax return or for those that were late lodging their prior year tax return. For those using a tax agent, the extended lodgement dates are available. The final date for lodgement for all other individuals and businesses who are not early lodgers is 15th May.

One small but significant change in regards to superannuation contributions is the removal of the 10 per cent rule. This rule basically prohibited a person with 10 per cent or more of taxable income gained from wages being able to make deductible contributions to a superannuation plan apart from salary sacrifice. The removal of this rule has some positive applications in reducing taxable income, including offsetting capital gains. For more information on how this might affect different personal circumstances, consult an accountant. HELLO WINTER BLUES

“A WINTERVENTION” BY NIKKI MACPHERSON

Africa Safari Co Destination Evening – 14th September Scenic River cruising Information Sessions – 5th October Please RSVP to bunbury@helloworld.com.au or (08) 9721 5855

Hey you! Yes I’m talking to you…I see you there, clutching your mug of steaming coffee, all rugged up in your thick coat and wooly scarf, staring out the café window at the pelting rain. You’re dreading walking back to your car, you’ll get soaking wet, your shoes will get saturated, the ice cold wind will freeze your fingers to the point where they feel like they are going to snap off. You think about your friends up the road, you know they are basking in the sun on the beach in Phuket, you know because you see their facebook profile updated every hour with photos of palm trees and brightly colored, tasty looking cocktails. A pang of envy sets in. What if I was to tell you that you don’t have to do this next year?! A Wintervention if you will… Whether it’s to escape it all together with an epic 3 month journey, or a week long break just to break the monotony and warm your bones, now is the time to start planning your winter getaway for 2018. Particularly if you have children and are looking at the July School Holidays, you need to be getting in now. Not only will it give you access to the best availability to give you the room type, cabin type or hotel that you want, but it’ll also give you a light at the end of the tunnel to get you through until Spring! Now…where to go? The European Summer is incredible – hot enough to swim, but the sun doesn’t cook you alive the way it can here! Croatia, both land based and sailing is growing in leaps and bounds drawing more travellers year on year to discover the medieval fortified walled cities, incredible Plitvice Lakes and waterfalls, turquoise coastline dotted with islands begging to be explored. Easily combined with neighboring Slovenia, a completely underrated jewel of outdoor adventure, you could be paragliding over the Alps in the morning and the floating in the Mediterranean Sea in the afternoon. Then, if you still haven’t had enough of the sun licking your shoulders and the salt water waking you up each morning, a quick flight to Athens will have you Greek Island hopping in no time. With the whitewashed buildings set against the royal blue ocean, it’s a photographer’s dream. Add to this the friendly locals and their

delicious seafood and a glass of wine…where’s Bunbury again?? Maybe you want a bit more adventure though? Something you just can’t get at home. You NEED to see Africa. It’s one of those places that just gets under your skin, once you’ve seen a little bit, you just need more, more, more… We’ve all seen elephants and giraffes at the zoo, but there’s just nothing like seeing them roaming wild and free in herds as far as the eye can see, from the comfort and safety of a safari jeep. You turn a corner, there is a leopard having a snooze in the branches of a tree, oblivious to the excitement of yourself getting snap happy with your camera. It’s the sounds at night, the distant roar of a lion, the demonic grunting of the hippos in the river, the screeching chatter of the cheeky baboons, plotting their next food thievery. Plan your dates right and you could witness a once in a lifetime experience – the great migration. A fabulous destination for all types of travelers, you can do Africa as luxurious or fancy free as you like, suitable for singles, couples and families - imagine the look on your kiddies faces when the meerkats scramble up to them for a closer look! Then there’s the destinations closer to home – so many wonderful places in Asia get overlooked due to the heavy advertising of cheap Bali and Phuket holidays. What about Vietnam with its food, glorious food! Cambodia with its haunting history and endearing happy go luck people, discovering the temples of Angkor Wat and partying up Pub Street, Siem Reap by night. Step outside of Phuket itself and venture to the Elephant Hills where you can stay in luxury tented camps by night, and do a jungle safari by day. Interact with the well looked after elephants. Sri Lanka, still ultimately untouched by tourists, has everything from hotels set amongst the clouds of a tea plantation, stilt fishing along the gorgeous coastlines, more animal filled national parks and again, food, glorious food! Or, flop and drop on a palm tree lined beach with a cocktail in your hand and post a photo of it on facebook - It’s somebody else’s turn to be envious! Winter is the pits. Don’t go through it all again next year.

roadcasting on 87.6FM in Bunbury, Busselton, Dunsborough, Cowaramup and East Perth, Radio WA is a unique source of information for both locals and visitors to the south west of WA. In addition to providing plenty of content on the history of the area and great places to visit, the station also regularly meets, and tells the story behind, the various business owners, creatives and characters that make the south west of WA what it is today. Owner Barry Green recently met up with WA author and publisher of The Roleystone Courier, Linda Bettenay, who has just released her third novel, The Apple Core Wars, a true story about two boys, Jacky Bellamy and Charlie Parkin, growing up in neighbouring farming communities in the Perth Hills. Fierce enemies, a rivalry made even greater through their joint interest in a local girl, the beautiful Stella Cerini, the story really comes alive with the advent of

the Second World War where both boys find themselves fighting in the same unit. At the beginning of 1942, their battalion is diverted to south-east Asia where, while trying to halt the advance of the Japanese, the young soldiers are captured and held as POWs. Facing hardship and plenty of ordeals along the way, the boys eventually return home at the end of the war with past differences resolved. In short, as Linda explains, it’s a story about “the building of friendship and mateship that happens when going through great adversity.” Linda also talks more to Barry about Charlie Parkin’s family, who came from Roleystone. Charlie was one of eight brothers and through their great cricketing prowess they were once paid a visit by the Australian cricket team, featuring Don Bradman no less, whilst travelling to compete for the Ashes in England. It’s a fascinating insight into the history one of Perth’s most unique communities.

ew Head of Primary and passionate educator Rob Whirledge joined the Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School team at the beginning of 2017. He brings with him a myriad of educational skills and philosophies that go far beyond classroom fundamentals. “I believe that primary school should be a place where students can truly enjoy themselves in a supportive environment. They should learn how to socialise, share, problem solve and understand that mistakes are a part of the learning process,” says Mr Whirledge. “It is our job to provide a suitable environment for students to learn a broad range of skills, including critical thinking, morals and ethics, values, philosophy and other emotional intelligences.” Mr Whirledge credits Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School as the south west’s premier school, acknowledging its strong foundations, bushland setting, the commitment of staff and the opportunities available to students as significant drawcards. “The ultimate goal is for students to flourish and the backbone of this is the fact that the school lives and breathes its philosophies,” says Mr Whirledge. “Two key philosophies are Positive Education, whereby we encourage students to harness their strengths to ensure the success of the individual. Plus, promoting 48 EDUCATION

a Growth Mindset implies that student abilities aren’t innate or fixed but rather can be developed through perseverance and hard work. I believe that exposing children to a variety of opportunities in primary is essential in enabling them to make more informed choices in secondary school. Having now been at the school for over a semester, I have been amazed by the enthusiasm of the staff and their commitment to provide the broadest and richest learning environment possible.” “We not only offer typical after-school sporting pursuits but also other activities, such as standup paddle boarding, hip-hop dancing and lawn bowls. We host a variety of opportunities within the arts, such as the strings ensemble, wind band and school productions. Add to this our challenge and extension programmes – Maths Olympiad, Da Vinci Day, RoboCup and numerous other activities – it is surprising that any student has time to travel overseas or interstate to experience our student exchange programme.” To arrange a personalised tour of Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, contact the Enrolments Office on 08 9722 6004 or email enrol@bcgs.wa.edu.au

WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME FOR A NEW LOOK?

F

BY GET YOUR APP

or every thing there is a season. This saying is also extremely relevant in the world of business. When we think of spring, we think of growth, a fresh start, change, new life. At GetYourApp, we are constantly embracing change and over time we have grown as a company to add even more services. We have also recently evolved and transformed our branding and logo. We too are leveraging off the season of change to launch our fresh new website and look. However, the question is - when is it the right time for your business to evolve and change? Who doesn’t love that feeling of a good spring clean, a welcome makeover, a fresh hair style or even a brand new house renovation? So, is it time for your business to embrace change? Let’s take a look at the following pointers:50 BUSINESS

It’s about the brand

What is your message? Can it be represented in a refreshed or simpler graphical way? Can you take advantage of a current trend to repackage the message in your logo? Remember, not everyone will be happy with your logo change. However, don’t let this become a consideration when thinking about change. Instagram created waves with its logo change and yet it remains one of the most successful brands on the planet.

The age of the look

When was your logo designed? When was your website last revamped? Do you ever feel like you are being transported in a time machine back to 1990 every time you open up a page on your current site? We are visual creatures and process graphical content 60,000 times faster than text. It is important to stay relevant and to think about updating brands and logos at least

every five years or so. Perhaps even throughout the life cycle of the business from start-up to expansion or merge. A good example of this is AirBnB. As the business has grown, its new logo has evolved too. There was, of course, much to talk about with the new look and AirBnB used the opportunity as a great campaign to bounce off.

Trends and longevity

Was your logo created with an older font or colour palate that no longer serves its purpose? Is the now trend as important as the longevity of the brand and message? Can a small change make a big refreshing impact for your logo? Google is a great example here with their simple approach to keeping their logo modern and relevant. It even has a play with its logo in real time to engage on an interactive level.

M u lt i p l e a p p l i c at i o n s o f a l o g o

The times have lone gone when a logo just needed to be on a brick and mortar building and supported with some printed business cards and embroidered uniforms. Now it is important to have a logo that can be applied on multiple digital platforms to engage well with its audience and customers. Think about your design and how will it present on a social media page or profile. How would an app button look, will it still be relevant in a multi-screen world of different sizes, is it responsive? At GetYourApp, we love to support the growth and evolution of businesses. If you need some support with creating a more relevant and engaging business, book in a free consultation with one of our dedicated project managers at your favourite local coffee shop and see what we can do for you. ine lines and wrinkles, puffiness, bags and dark circles are all familiar concerns that cause eyes to look fatigued and older. In fact, one of the first places to show signs of ageing is the skin around the eyes. It has fewer oil glands and is extra thin – around one tenth the thickness of skin elsewhere on the face – so it is more prone to damage and, therefore, needs more looking after. To add to this, using our eyes to squint, smile and frown causes small wrinkles over time, not helped, of course, by tiredness, stress and regular exposure to wind, sun, heating or air-conditioning. To repair damage and to hydrate, lift, firm, brighten and tighten this vulnerable skin, it’s important to invest in appropriate products. The eye area is delicate and needs to be cared for by products created specifically for it. Shiseido have produced Ultimune Eye, Power Infusing Eye Concentrate, which helps the eye area to become stronger and, in turn, more resistant to common concerns. Skin takes on a dewy appearance and feels smooth allowing

eyes to look fresher and more youthful. Also from Shiseido are WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Masks, which are handy treatment sheets that help to reduce the appearance of crinkles around eyes, making skin silky smooth. For immediate relief from puffy eyes, Clinique’s All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage is wonderfully refreshing. Its cooling rollerball releases just the right amount of lightweight serum, which can be used alongside other treatments and under makeup. Dark circles are easily tackled by using Even Better Eyes Corrector Clinique. In just 12 weeks, dark Dark Circle Corrector, circles are lightened by up to 30 per cent. To help to rejuvenate older looking eyes, Clinique has also created specialised treatments: Repairwear Cream which Laser Focus Wrinkle Correcting Eye Cream, starts to show results in 4 weeks; Repairwear AntiCream which helps to firm up the eye Gravity Eye Cream, area and Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment, which will brighten, target crows’ feet and firm wherever needed. Brand new to the market is Estée Lauder’s Advanced Matrix which reduces Night Repair Eye Concentrate Matrix, the signs of ageing eyes. Excitingly, new technology has been used to maximise the skin’s own repair process in the area around the eyes and, as this formula contains twice as much hyaluronic acid than Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum, its hydrating effect lasts for up to 24 hours. Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room. Two destinations in one location in the Stirling Centre, Bunbury, for all your beauty needs. HEALTH & BEAUTY 53

A g e i n g S k i n A n d T h e N at u r a l M o i s t u r i s i n g F a c t o r By Jeanette Elliott

A

s a dermal clinician, I am regularly asked by clients how to achieve youthful and healthy looking skin. Many have tried cosmetic injectables to help minimize wrinkles but, although in many cases the wrinkles have gone, their skin still often looks dull, tired and blotchy – which, of course, is instantly ageing. Cosmetic injectables can be a great temporary solution for wrinkles but they do nothing to encourage the skin itself to look younger. Are cosmetic injectables really the only answer for ageing skin? Youthful skin is fresh, even-toned and plump. Think about it, if you stand two people side by side and one has dry, dull, blotchy skin with no wrinkles and the other has fresh, radiant, even-toned, plump skin with some fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, which one will appear older? Remember, wrinkles are only one of the signs of ageing skin and there are many other skin conditions that can make a person look older than they actually are. One of the first signs of ageing skin is often caused by dehydration. This is where the skin has lost too much of its natural water reserves,

looks dull and feels tight and dry. This causes fine lines and crepey (thin) skin and impairment with the skin’s natural moisturising factor (NMF). This is a crucial factor in ageing skin. The NMF is part of the natural chemistry of skin and essential

for optimum skin health. Amino acids, ceramides and hyaluronic acid make up the NMF, which are excreted from skin cells to keep them plump, hydrated and healthy. Once excreted, these hydrating substances coat and protect the skin cells from drying out. The NMF binds with natural skin lipids to create a natural moisturiser for the

skin. This natural moisturiser sits in between the cells, holding the skin together and preventing excess moisture loss. Referred to as the “barrier function”, it is the body's first line of defence against moisture loss and infection. When it is missing or incomplete, and the skin is not producing enough of these substances to keep the skin soft and supple, symptoms, such as mild dehydration, tightness, dryness, skin sensitivities, flaking, irritations and itching can be experienced. Untreated, this can result in premature ageing, lines and wrinkles, heightened sensitivities and predisposition to allergies, eczema and dermatitis. Combining the correct dermal therapies and complementary skin care formulations is vitally important to restore a healthy barrier function and NMF. Advances in cosmeceutical skincare now provide biomimetic formulations, which naturally mimic the skin's NMF. Derived mainly from the botanical kingdom, when clinically formulated, these precisely mimic the skin’s natural chemistry. Cheaper, older-style formulas simply sit on the skin’s surface. Biomimetic formulations sit within the skin and do much more than just moisturise.

Jeanette Elliott is a dermal clinician who has many years’ experience in helping patients to understand their skin and the conditions that may affect it, providing realistic expectations of the results that can be achieved. She is an APAN Registered Aesthetics Practitioner, a member of the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians, the Aesthetics Practitioners Advisory Network and the Australasian Academy of Anti-ageing Medicine (A5M,) and is actively involved in the dermal therapy professional community via her role as a student assessor within the Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science. 54 HEALTH & BEAUTY

1

Establish an easy to follow, sustainable nutritional plan that can be maintained for the rest of your life. Short term diets will only provide short term results.

2

Eat foods that are easy to obtain, easy to prepare and foods that you and your family currently enjoy eating. Aim for foods that provide good nutrition, varying foods to minimise any deficiencies. Food consumed from fresh and natural sources will provide optimal nutrition value, contain less calories, preservatives and additives and in the long run be 100 per cent better for you.

Carry a bottle of water around all day and measure how much water you are consuming. Buy a water filter jug for the home or invest in a water filter for your tap to ensure top quality water, free of chlorine and other impurities. Increase the intake of water for more active days.

5

E at f i v e o r s i x m e a l s e a c h d ay

When calorie intake is lowered, the body’s metabolism naturally slows down. To ensure that it doesn’t slow too much, eat five to six small, low-fat meals every day. Eat three meals that are made up of carbohydrates, protein and fat and two to three small, protein only meals.

By planning and preparing meals for the week it’s possible to know exactly what you are consuming while saving both time and money. Avoid starving yourself. This will only increase the fat stored in the body and can lead to binge eating. If you are thinking of food too often this could be due to a low blood sugar level, dehydration, a nutrient deficiency or simply because you haven’t eaten enough.

This calorie measurement is found to be the absolute minimum calorie intake to achieve weight-loss without causing nutritional deficiencies. This measurement ensures energy levels remain high and that the metabolism doesn’t slow too much. Note, this is the minimum. If active, increase the calorie intake so that the body has enough energy to function correctly.

Try to eat your largest meal at the start of the day when your body needs the energy most. As the day progresses, decrease the size of the portions and the amount of carbohydrates consumed.

10

M o d e r at e a l c o h o l c o n s u m p t i o n

Alcohol is a poison to the body that gets metabolised quicker and takes priority over other macro nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Consuming an intake greater than 1 to 3 glasses a week will limit weight loss results and increase the storage of fat in cells.

DE-SEXING THE CITY HELP SOUTH WEST ANIMAL RESCUE BY DE-SEXING YOUR PET

S

BY DR BRADEN COLLINS

pring is finally here and love is in the air. And I don’t just mean the human kind! This time of the year creates plenty of problems for rescue organisations, such as South West Animal Rescue (SWAR) and SAFE, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the rescue, care, rehabilitation and rehoming of homeless and abandoned pets in WA. Spring is the breeding season for many pets and now is the time to think about having your pet de-sexed. Over the years, pet rescue organisations have seen a steady increase in the number of pets needing rehoming. This creates a number of issues in terms of capacity for both the number of pets that can be looked after and the number of homes that are available to house them. It also becomes a huge stretch on financial resources.

58 ANIMAL HEALTH

Over the last few years, we have used our membership programs to raise over $20,000 for SWAR. These funds have been used to sterilise, microchip and vaccinate over two hundred additional pets in need of a new home. This spring, we want to see if we can make an even bigger contribution. For every pet desexed at the Bunbury and Eaton Vet Clinics in September, we will desex a cat or dog for SWAR for free. Therefore by de-sexing the

family pet this spring these rescue organisations will be helped in the following ways: • The family pet won’t breed and, therefore, won’t contribute to the high number of pets needing to find homes. • Pet owners will be effectively allowing SWAR to de-sex a pet in need of a new home. • SWAR’s funds will be freed up to use in other areas that improve the life of animals.

De-sexing operations are performed Monday to Friday and are done as a day procedure. Pets are admitted to one of our hospitals in the morning and generally can head home by mid to late afternoon. The admission process takes around ten minutes with another ten minute appointment at discharge. All prices include intravenous fluids, pain killers throughout the surgery and to take home afterwards, post-operative checks,

warm air blankets and mats. That is, we include everything we believe the pet needs to make the procedure as safe and as comfortable as possible and to ensure a speedy, pain-free recovery. For more information, go online at www.bunburyvets.com.au. Alternatively, to make a booking

or to obtain an estimate for the procedure, call the Bunbury Vet Clinic on 9721 5999 or Eaton Vet Clinic on 9725 0399.

update world By ANNIE MALONE

FOR A GIRL BORN IN THE LATE 1950'S, I can find my way around a computer reasonably well. At the end of each financial year, I manage to import my new tax tables, download my MYOB updates, install the new version and at the end of much clicking in, clicking out and downloading, I am appropriately upgraded to carry on for another year. I sometimes yearn for those nice columns of hand written figures and totals in a ledger book where one could marvel at how neat their writing had been two years previously. Where you could look at the balances and checks and enjoy the symmetry of it all and revel in your achievements. Still, in my computer I have this amazingly gifted small person who works many things out for me. As long as I give her the right information, she will come up with the answers. My little Miss Clever Socks is very good at algebra, spelling, grammar and she even does my filing, though I sometimes can’t find where she has put things. When I ask her for a report she quickly produces one to keep me happy, gives me colourful options so I feel in control! “Pie chart or coloured graph version?” she asks. Little Miss Clever Socks keeps me on my toes, always pushing me to new limits. “Hey, I have an update for you, save what you are working on, go and have a cup of tea while I install, it will take 5 minutes 35 seconds. Then I will restart the computer and happy days…. you can return to what you were doing”. Off I go and serve some customers, real people who want real food and who talk with a real voice. I come back and what the heck, my screen looks completely different. What’s the story, Miss CS? “Oh yes,” she purrs, “We have changed some of the icons, those others were so outdated and boring. Time for new words and pictures, it won’t take you long to find everything, just keep hitting buttons and you’ll work it out. It’s easy and the new background colour 60 FOOD & WINE

is so …..in the moment.” Now, I’m not a girl who needs to always have the latest fad. If I like something and it does the job I will keep using it. I form emotional attachments to things. I have had the same car for 14 years because it drives well and I like it. I wear favourite clothes until they are faded and threadbare because they become special and comfortable to me and hold in their threads memories that I treasure. So my question to the universe and Miss CS is, if a system isn’t broken,

do we need to update, upgrade and redesign just because we can? I now have to spend an hour going to and fro to the help button just to do what I did perfectly well before, without any help from anyone. The program is here to help me run a business and keep good records for Mr Taxman. I’m all for learning new ways and stimulating the old grey matter, but pretty icing on the cake doesn’t necessarily make it taste better. “You also have some new functions,” Miss CS blinks at me. “I can show you now or ask me later, I will still be here”. OK, I didn’t mean to seem ungrateful, Miss CS, I know you have a job to do, so give me the sales blurb now, beguile me with your wisdom, prove to me that life just wouldn’t be as beautiful without my 'new functions.' “I have a training video for you,” she announces proudly. Oh now you’re talking, honey, lay it on me. Moving pictures gets me every time. Can you just hit pause for a tick, the kitchen is a mess and I have to do some dishes, be back in five. “Don’t you have a machine to do the dishes,” she shouts to me. “I can show you a link to one. They’re called dishwashers.” Hey, I told you, I’m a child of the late 1950’s. We always did our own dishes and I enjoy doing them. Quicker isn’t always better you know. Dishwashing is a meditation session for me. When I feel the need for an upgrade, I will let you know, Sweet Socks. Annie Malone is the proprietor of The Natural Temptation Café, 47 Stephen Street.

W

elcome to our latest update on the news and happenings around the Geographe wine region. The 2017 Geographe and WA Alternative Varieties Wine Show will be held on September 21st and 22nd, with the show culminating in a Gala Award Dinner on the evening of Friday 22nd at Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre. Once again, the show will not only provide an opportunity for local producers to showcase their wines but will also offer the chance for wines produced from alternative grape varieties within Western Australia to enter. Chief Judge on the panel this year is wine consultant and writer Tim White, a regular contributor to the Australian Financial Review. An experienced wine show judge, Tim has served as a panel chair at both the Royal Melbourne and Adelaide wine shows. He was also the inaugural Chief Judge of the Australian Alternative Wine Show and remains highly committed to alternative varieties.

The annual Dardanup Bull and Barrel Festival will also present another opportunity to sample some of the Geographe’s finest recent releases. Taking place on Saturday 7th October, the event will be hoping for better weather this year after the cancellation of last year’s show due to persistent rain. Open from 10am to 9pm, entry is free. Further news from the region is that following the release of the Geographe Wine Industry Association’s new logo, the association now has a sparkling new website. GWIA treasurer, Pippa Nielsen of Vineyard 28, said the association’s new website was designed and developed with travellers in mind. “We wanted a website that brought the region together and made it extremely easy for wine enthusiasts to find what is open and how to reach their destination,” says Pippa. “Our new website features over 30 interactive maps with directions, as well as an advanced search tool for visitors.

2016 Amphora Garnacha available at Green Door Wines

Feature Wine

2016 Amphora garnacha green door wines Ferguson Valley winery Green Door Wines has recently announced the release of a new addition to its premium Amphora range, the 2016 Amphora Garnacha. The winery has been using Amphora pots to produce its premium range of wines for the last three years with the pots sourced from the McLaren Vale in South Australia. Made from clay and lined with beeswax the pots have given great structure and complexity to the wines produced. The 2016 Amphora Garnacha is the first time Green Door Wines has released a straight Garnacha. Originally from Spain, Garnacha (or Grenache as it is otherwise known) is a vigorous varietal to grow. However, the vines at the winery are now over 20 years old and are producing intense-flavoured fruit, enabling production of the first Amphora Garnacha. The Garnacha fruit is hand-picked and de-stemmed into the amphora clay pots. Some whole bunches are added at this stage. The ferment is initiated using wild yeast. When dry, the ferment is pressed off into old oak for Malolactic fermentation and cellared for twelve months before bottling. 2016 Amphora Garnacha Tasting Notes Brilliant garnet in colour, the aromas are dark cherries, cinnamon, vanilla and star anise. There is a soft medium bodied palate, with juicy raspberries and black jelly beans, and fine chalky tannins. Available from the cellar door at $35, or online at www.greendoorwines.com.au. A 20 per cent discount applies on purchases of 6 bottles or more. 68 FOOD & WINE

Spring Recipe

SMOKED SALMON OMELETTE This metabolism-boosting breakfast is sure to kick start the day. It’s high in protein, low in fat and steadily releases energy for whatever is planned for the morning ahead. Or, for an indulgent brekkie (with the calories to match!), add a dollop of sour cream or mascarpone on top of the fish before folding it over. Serves 2

Ingredients can of low cholesterol oil spray

2 tomatoes

6 egg whites

chopped continental parsley

100g smoked salmon

ground black pepper

4 slices of rye bread, toasted

Method Cut the tomatoes in half and grill under a high heat. Meanwhile, spray a shallow frying pan with the oil and heat over a medium to high heat. Whisk the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Season with black pepper and slowly pour into the pan. Gently mix with a wooden spoon and, with light pressure, press down on the mixture until it is lightly coloured. Place the smoked salmon over just half of the omelette and use a spatula to fold over the other side to create a semicircle. Garnish with the parsley. Serve the omelette with the grilled tomatoes and toast. Enjoy!
