an you believe it’s 10 years since we launched The Bunbury Life! Wow, where did that decade go?! Ten years ago, of course, the world was a very different place. Social media was only just starting to find its feet – Instagram and Pinterest hadn’t even launched - we were in the midst of a GFC (which still has continuing ramifications today) and magazines littered our coffee tables. Fast Forward ten years and the digital age is upon us. Many publishers have taken their print products online and forgone the traditional print version. A number have even decided to close their doors. However, many of us are still flourishing. Why? Because there are plenty of people who still and will always enjoy picking up a tactile product and immersing themselves in the experience it offers. An online magazine can never offer this and is a completely different type of product. Ink on paper will always be the medium for luxury and highly photographic content. Until next time,

john williamson The Butcherbird Tour

Thurs October 4, 8pm legendary australian singer/songwriter John Williamson is back on the road with ‘The Butcherbird Tour’, which will be performed across Australia over the next 12 months. Sharing with his audiences his biggest hits and latest musical contributions, his new tour comes off the back of his new album by the same name set for release in August 2018. The new album and tour will continue to see John pen the stories into song that he continues to be passionate about; the country, the people and the fight for what is right.

Having created some of Australia’s most recognised unofficial anthems, he is firmly cemented in the nation’s musical culture. His tributes to Aussie legends and unsung heroes together with his tender ballads have captured the spirit of the nation in song unlike no other. Call him what you want, Mallee Boy, True Blue or just plain Fair Dinkum, there is no denying that after more than forty years in the music industry, John Williamson is truly an Australian icon.

The Other Side of Hope

international film festival Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre Thurs July 26 to Fri August 3

BUNBURY Regional Entertainment Centre’s International Film Festival returns this winter with multiple sessions running across two weekends, featuring six independent films from around the globe. This year’s line-up includes heart-warming comedy Aurore (I Got Life), from French director Blandine Lenoir, and The Other Side of Hope, a melancholic comedy tale from award-winning Finish director Aki Kaurismaki about Syrian refugee Khaled (Sherwan Haji), who stows away to Finland. Another must-watch film in this year’s festival is Pop Aye from awardwinning director Kirsten Tan. Her debut film is an offbeat road trip across Thailand, featuring a rather surreal bromance between an over-the-hill architect and his long lost elephant. Plus, don’t miss Palm d’Or winner The Square. A satirical take on the contemporary art world from Swedish writer-director Ruben Ostlund, The Square takes inspiration from a real-life art project developed by Ostlund and Kalle Boman that explores the value of trust in society and the need to reassess social values. BREC’s International Film Festival begins on Thursday 26th July with multiple screenings at 2pm, 5.30pm and 8pm. For the full line-up of films, dates and times, go online to www.bunburyentertainment.com or call the box office on 1300 661 272.

WINTER WARMERS The latest fashion trends from The Bunbury Life’s resident fashion expert.

Winter is officially here, although it’s not all that bad! A new season places new demands on a wardrobe and that can only mean one thing: shopping! Read on to find out all about the latest seasonal trends that are just waiting to be snapped up and taken home. A favourite winter indulgence is, of course, searching for the new statement coat so be sure to consider the hugely popular oversized blazer this season. Androgynous and incredibly easy to wear, it has wide shoulders and a boxy frame that balances perfectly with skinny pants or a full midi skirt. Also on trend this season is a plaid double-breasted overcoat. Its simple clean silhouette allows a check in any colourway to stand out. Leave it unbuttoned over pants or a feminine winter dress. For unbeatable cosiness, invest in a teddy coat. It will literally feel like being hugged by a much-loved teddy bear! The roomy, highly textural coats are designed to generously envelop the wearer and they look great over anything from casual pieces for the weekend to dressier outfits with heels. And just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that dresses can’t be worn for a couple of months. Invest in a dress with a light, sheer or silky fabric – that way it can be layered with a shirt or thin sweater underneath, or with a slouchy sweater over the top. This season, there are plenty of floral prints with yellows, as well as florals with a black, dark green or navy background. Go for a wrap dress that swings or a midi dress with ruffles and frills and look out for a high neckline or deep V-neck with voluminous sleeves. Add a pair of ankle boots and maybe a soft lightweight knit to finish off. Typical winter colours always include black and navy along with rich and alluring jewel tones but there are welcome shades of pale blue, lavender, soft candy pink and mint featuring in collections of knits and pants. Yellow, particularly in marigold, is a standout colour for winter and is so uplifting when worn as a backdrop to florals for a flowing midi dress or a billowy-sleeved blouse. Opting for an accessory, such as a small cross-body bag, in a soft colour or a vibrant yellow, is an effective yet safe way to enjoy the look. And as well as florals, checks in any colourway are set to be popular this winter.

unbury-based skaters Andrew Beattie, Madison Bright and Laura Cameron have recently returned from a highly successful visit to an acclaimed international dance skating competition held in Porto, Portugal. Competing against ten nationalities from three separate continents in the Chapatim Roller Cup, Andrew took out first place in the Youth Men’s event, Madison was placed fourth in the Youth Ladies’ event and Laura finished eleventh in the Junior Ladies’ event. Elite coach, international judge and Manager of The Rink, Bunbury, Susan Brooks was understandably delighted with the results. “The three skaters produced outstanding performances in their grades and deserve to be recognised and congratulated for their achievements. This was a high standard European-based event and a first for the three in their skating careers.” The results are also a testament to the skaters’ dedication to their training and to the support and coaching received at The Rink, Bunbury. All the skaters started in the sport by attending Learn To Skate Classes 26 SPORT & RECREATION

at the centre and now train both on and off skates while skating up to 6 times a week. Taught and mentored by Susan, the skaters are supported financially by their parents and, along with Coach Susan, the trip was also attended by Andrew and Madison’s parents and by a trainee Gold Level judge. In a measure of the importance of the event, Australia sent a total of twelve competitors to Portugal and won a total of three first places along with a third place. Future events on the calendar for the three Bunbury stars include the National Championships to be held in Perth in July and the Oceania Championships to be held in New Zealand in September. We look forward to reporting more stories of success later in the year. TRIUMPH SPEED TRIPLE

POPULAR SERIES GETS IMPRESSIVE UPGRADE

S

tyled on the legendary Speed Twin, a bike first built almost a century ago by British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph, the Speed Triple played a major part in ushering in Triumph’s new found popularity in the early 1990’s. This classic caféstyle machine quickly coined the phrase ‘Streetfighter’, and its stylish looks and impressive performance capabilities won it a legion of followers. Fast forward to 2018 and fans of this much loved brand will be revelling in the fact that this year has seen two new variants of the bike released. The RS, replacing the outgoing R model and the S, may not look overly different to previous incarnations but there have been plenty of changes made under the skin to improve on the overall riding experience. According to Triumph, a hefty 105, no less, new parts have been added to the engine alone. The result is 10PS more power, a higher peak torque of 117Nm at 7150rpm, a more immediate throttle response and a noticeable accentuation of the effortless delivery of power riders have become accustomed to. A new free-flowing exhaust and titanium silencer, along with an improved gearbox and graded slip assist clutch and additional weight saving measures, have meant a genuine stepchange in performance. As befits one of the world’s leading manufacturers at a time of increasing technology on road bikes, the all-new Speed Triple boasts a plethora of equipment and features as standard. Keyless ignition, cruise control, five separate riding modes, optimised cornering ABS and traction control, and an adjustable 5-inch TFT instrument screen are just the start. There’s also the high specification, fully adjustable suspension, highgloss cast alloy wheels and high performance Brembo brakes all fitted onto a distinctive lightweight carbon fibre body with matt aluminium rear sub-frame. Add to that its contemporary graphics, distinctive Daytime Running Lights and unmistakeable Triumph soundtrack and we have another winning combination worthy of the Triumph badge. For further information on the Triumph Speed Triple, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 13 Halifax Drive, or call 9721 3033. 28 SPORT & RECREATION

S E A F A R E R VA G A B O N D 6.2M X SERIES

F

ounded over 60 years ago and now part of The Haines Group, Seafarer is one of the legendary names in Australian boating. With thousands of its fibreglass boats sold since 1957, the brand continues to evolve and today its range includes a wide choice of tough, high-performance craft all capable of withstanding the most demanding of on-water conditions. Its X-Series is a new range of heavy duty, extra tough boats built to offer impressive long range capabilities with the Seafarer Vagabond being one of the latest additions to the line-up. This no-frills, sturdy yet stylish vessel is ideal for deep sea fishing enthusiasts wanting to mix it with the rough stuff. Built with extra resin and stainless steel together with almost 100kg of glass and with a hull weighing in at around 1300kg, this beast of a boat comes fitted with a huge 270L fuel tank as standard. There are also plenty of premium finishes, including stainless steel rails, steering wheel and rod holders. Measuring in at an overall length of 6.2m and with a 2.4m beam, there’s plenty of space on deck to haul in those big catches with enough room to comfortably accommodate seven crew members. 30 SPORT & RECREATION

Designed as a traditional cuddy cabin, space in the fishing room has been boosted by omitting the passenger helm seat and there is a full-length side pocket for storage to port, a centre cutting board at the transom with a snapper rack and a good sized rear toe rail for fighting fish along the transom. Its two berths also include a portable head between the v-bunks, which is well suited to families wanting to fish overnight. Typically paired with a 150 to 250hp single outboard or 90 to 140hp twin to offer powerful offshore performance, its robust hull, uncluttered floor space and numerous fishing features included as standard make for a compelling package. The Vagabond 6.2m X Series is definitely one for the serious fisho.

For further information on the Seafarer range, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 13 Halifax Drive, or call 9721 3033.

Sue M c Camon, Ventura Homes

W

ith over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, Sue McCamon is passionate about the lifestyle to be enjoyed in WA’s beautiful south west. Having recently joined one of the region’s leading building companies, Ventura Homes, The Bunbury Life caught up with Sue for a chat.

H o w d i d y o u g e t s ta r t e d i n t h e h o m e building industry and in which areas of t h e i n d u s t r y h av e y o u w o r k e d ?

My career in the industry began straight from college in the UK where I began work as an accounts clerk in a Builders Merchants, working my way up through the company to Office Manager. Since arriving in Western Australia 22 years ago, I have continued to follow my passion for working in the industry. I have worked as an Administration Assistant, Prestart Consultant, Client Liaison, Display Home Coordinator, Contract Administration Manager and now as a Design and Sales Consultant. It’s fair to say I have covered all bases and this wide range of experience gained in building processes has given me a huge advantage when helping clients through their build.

W h at a r e t h e m o s t i m p o r ta n t p o i n t s t o consider when building a home?

In short, it’s all about finding the right builder for you. In other words, a reputable building company that focuses heavily on customer service and one that offers a diverse range of home designs to choose from. By working closely with a design and sales consultant, the home can then be customised to suit lifestyle and personal requirements. At Ventura Homes, we can either custom design a home or work with plans already created by a building designer or architect. 32 PROPERTY & FINANCE

H o w h av e l i v i n g s p a c e s c h a n g e s o v e r the years?

Homes theatres or media rooms are very much on trend at present replacing the old games room. Due to the huge growth in the use of laptops and tablets, IT nooks are also becoming much more popular and replacing the traditional and often wasted space of a study unless, of course, a study is required as an office for clients working from home.

W h at a r e y o u r f av o u r i t e c u r r e n t d e s i g n trends?

I love a skillion roof and Ventura Homes’ Farmhouse Range is very popular here in the south west. The innovative floor plans are extremely adept at meeting the typical requirements of families that love to socialise. The Acacia, part of our Vogue Essential Range, is also one of our most popular designs. It’s a gorgeous

4-bedroom, 2-bathroom home with a total of 278sqm of living space, which fits neatly on a 15m block. It’s perfectly zoned with a lovely flow throughout the entire home; it really is the home with everything. Versatile, and with the ability to be tailored to suit everyone’s needs, it also helps that it’s priced exceptionally at $220,990! I have also always loved the Hamptons-style, which is beautiful, if done well, and never dates. And I have a passion for two storey homes, which probably comes from my English heritage.

W h at ’ s t o p p i n g t h e w i s h l i s t f o r h o m e b u i l d e r s at p r e s e n t ?

Topping the wish list would have to be the scullery. These days, clients are taking them to the next level by putting the main kitchen sink and dishwasher in them, thus freeing up the kitchen island bench for entertaining. Indoor/outdoor living areas are also high

on clients’ wish lists. With a stylish island benchtop located in the correct position, those preparing the meal can still be included in the fun and conversation.

W h at i s t h e k e y p o i n t o f d i f f e r e n c e at Ventura Homes?

Design is the key difference at Ventura Homes. We ensure that we truly listen and understand our clients' lifestyle requirements to create living spaces that are not only stylish but completely liveable and functional.

Can you offer any words of wisdom for buyers looking to embark on the homebuilding process?

Call me as I would so love to help and get anyone started on their adventure. Building a new home should be a fun and pleasurable experience!

THE BANK OF MUM AND DAD

Financial guarantees from the folks

By Theo Krinos

W

ith housing prices in most areas of Australia soaring over the last decade, The Bank of Mum and Dad has been doing brisk business. According to NAB, the number of its first home buyers using guarantees from parents rose from 4.8% in 2010 to over 8% in 2016 with other lenders showing similar increases. So what is a financial guarantee? Put simply, a lender may request a guarantee if an applicant’s income or deposit doesn’t meet the institution’s lending criteria. This agreement sets out a third party as a guarantor, someone who will be legally responsible for all or certain aspects of a loan, such as interest, fees and charges, should the borrower default – and, not surprisingly, 38 PROPERTY & FINANCE

The Bank of Mum and Dad is often the first place that borrowers turn to. However, if you do manage to persuade your folks to become a guarantor, it’s only fair that they should be made aware of what they are getting themselves into. There could potentially be a large amount of risk for no personal benefit. Becoming a guarantor can firstly limit parents’ ability to borrow money themselves, even if payments on the guaranteed property are made on time each month. Selling their home can also become an issue if it has been used as security for another property and even their credit rating can take a hit if their siblings default on a repayment. Before signing on the dotted line, it’s also important to have a frank conversation about

the worst-case scenario, i.e. job loss or relationship breakdown and other what-ifs that might arise. In short, guarantees can be a great tool for parents with the financial capacity to help their children get into the property market. However, it’s important that both parties seek professional advice and understand their rights and responsibilities before entering into a guarantee arrangement.

INVESTING FOR RETIREMENT By Phil Di Candilo

W

e all dream of owning a successful property portfolio and for those investing, or planning to invest in property for retirement, here are some key points that should be considered.

W h at ’ s y o u r g o a l?

Whatever your reason for investing in property, it’s vital to know exactly what your goal is. It might be to eventually live off the rent from the portfolio, to subsidise income, to have a nest egg for security purposes, to eventually pass the property on to kids or to hold it for capital gains purposes. Whatever the reason, always have a clear strategy in mind.

H o w m a n y p r o p e r t i e s d o y o u r e a l ly need?

It’s the golden question but, unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer that suits everyone. Once again, it depends on your situation and what you hope to achieve from the investment. In some cases, investors might get a really strong performing property or two in a growing area that allows for financial goals to be easily reached. On the other hand, other investors might have a portfolio of ten and still not have the financial freedom they crave. It’s about finding a balance but don’t make the mistake of thinking that the more properties you have, the greater the rewards. It’s not ideal to be constantly increasing levels of debt, especially when approaching retirement. It’s far better to have a number of properties that you’re comfortable with and that provide healthy returns. The focus can then be on increasing their value 40 PROPERTY & FINANCE

and paying off debt so further benefits can be enjoyed when they become cash flow positive.

W h at ’ s t h e b e s t a g e t o s ta r t i n v e s t i n g for retirement?

Put simply, the earlier, the better. Property is a long term investment and the earlier a property can be purchased, the more time it will have to increase in value. This is why it’s vitally important to buy in an area with good capital growth in the first place. You will also have the advantage of seeing out a few property cycles so lows can be ridden out and the highs, as they come around, can be taken advantage of.

Get investment advice

When investing in property for retirement, it’s always a good idea to have an advisor, or a team of advisors, who can assist with your strategy. The advisor might be your accountant, financial advisor or an independent property advisor. The advisor can help review the strategy and goals and adjust them at different stages of your life or property cycle where required. They can also ensure that all entitled tax benefits allowable as an investor, including property depreciation, are being maximised.

roadcasting on 87.6FM in Bunbury, Busselton, Dunsborough, Cowaramup and East Perth, Radio WA is a unique source of information for both locals and visitors to the south west of WA. In addition to providing plenty of content on the history of the area and great places to visit, the station also regularly meets, and tells the story behind, the various business owners, creatives and characters that make the south west of WA what it is today. Owner Barry Green recently met up with Colin Scanlan, owner of Brain Spice. Located in Koombana Court on Victoria Street, Brain Spice is, along with almost one hundred other local businesses, a member of The Retail Co, a Bunbury-based group set up to promote retailers in the CBD. A specialist educational supplier and retailer of everything from science toys to gadgets and board

games to puzzles, this unique store, as Colin explains, was born out of simple beginnings. “It was an idea that sprung from a casual conversation that grew legs and then just wouldn’t leave us alone! We were talking about what might happen if I ended up with a redundancy from the job I had at Worsley Alumina.” As well as becoming a supplier of educational resources, the idea was to include both unique science toys and games to combine three very different areas of learning that would synergise and work well together. “We want to support education but we also want to encourage our customers to play with things and try and understand the gadgets and the cool toys and question for themselves to find their own answers, says Colin. Also, to exercise the thing between their ears. We all have a wonderful thing between our ears and it needs stimulating and it needs challenging!”

perfect spring day, watching the fishing boats bob in the harbour, a morning tea with a favourite grandparent, picking fruit as a child, warmth in the moonlight after a first date… Over time, these special moments in life can easily fade from memory. They are either completely forgotten or stored away and never enjoyed to their fullest again. That is, until, a certain smell, whether it be sharp, sweet, fresh, exotic or homely, brings it all flooding back. Aromas have the exquisite and undeniable ability to reawaken an experience more powerfully than relying on our dim and distant memories alone and this is why we are drawn to particular fragrances. When we smell a certain perfume, a memory is triggered with all the sounds, sights and feelings that go with it. The memory is far more vivid than if it had been reimagined without the presence of the fragrance. The nostalgia experienced is addictive. The fragrance becomes intoxicating – we want to relive those memories again and again 46 HEALTH & BEAUTY

and delight in them over and over. It never fails to captivate our senses. We may seek out fragrances that bring back a feeling of being youthful and carefree, of when we felt daring, seductive or frivolous. Or a fragrance can comfort with its familiar aroma that reassures us and brings back feelings of happiness or joy experienced in past times. Pinpointing exactly what it is that is so enticing about an aroma is almost impossible to put into words and logically explain. It makes them elusive – we just can’t fully explain the hold they have over us. We get a hint, a flash of an exquisite moment with images, feelings and hopes that we can’t get enough of. And perhaps this is why we will always enjoy the hunt for a new fragrance that is even more thrilling than the last. Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room. YOUR SKIN T H E H e a lt h Y G U T CONNECTION

A

s a rule, we take a topical approach to skin conditions; however, mounting evidence shows healthy skin on the outside starts from the inside. In short, if you want to heal your skin, you must heal your gut. Gut health is a key aspect of skin health. Research shows poor gut health contributes to premature ageing, acne and rosacea. It also influences our ability to recover from sun damage, eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis, while also impacting on mental health, weight, moods and other health disorders. Common signs of poor gut health are loose, unformed stools and constipation. Or perhaps you feel gassy, foggy headed and suffer from mood swings. Many diet and lifestyle-related factors can impact on a healthy gut. A high intake of alcohol or high intakes of fat from a poor diet are common examples. High stress levels impact cortisol levels and some medications can also affect gut health. Unfortunately, the gut doesn't like processed, fatty, sugary foods and our increasingly high fat, high carb diets, which involve the regular consumption of highly processed foods (the now

By Jeanette Elliott

standard Western diet) are a major contributor to poor digestive and gut health. Vegetables and plant-based foods provide essential nutrients to help maintain good gut health. Fibre provides a huge variety of compounds and nutrients so try eating more whole grains, fruit, vegetables, nuts and legumes. Plus, when we think of gut health, probiotics should come to mind. These are live bacteria that can be found in certain foods, particularly in yoghurt and fermented foods, such as miso, sauerkraut and kimchi, supplements can also help. However, prebiotics, a type of non-digestible fibre, are just as important acting as a fertiliser for the good bacteria in the gut. Both types are essential for balance. In the future, I believe the skin professional must examine the link between the gut, healthy skin and ageing to achieve the best outcomes for clients. It’s essential to arm ourselves with the knowledge and the tools to achieve that healthy look from the inside out.

STEPS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER WE ALL WANT TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHIER AND FITTER LIFESTYLE and if you are serious about making 2018 the year you reach your health and fitness goals, try following these simple ten steps below.

1

Follow a lifetime nutritional plan

2

E at n o r m a l e v e r y d ay f o o d s

Establish an easy to follow, sustainable nutritional plan that can be maintained for the rest of your life. Short term diets will only provide short term results. Eat foods that are easy to obtain, easy to prepare and foods that you and your family currently enjoy eating. Aim for foods that provide good nutrition, varying foods to minimise any deficiencies.

3

E at n at u r a l f o o d s e v e r y d ay

4

D r i n k at l e a s t 2 5 0 m l o f w at e r p e r 1 0 k g o f b o d y w e i g h t p e r d ay

Food consumed from fresh and natural sources will provide optimal nutrition value, contain less calories, preservatives and additives and in the long run be 100 per cent better for you.

Carry a bottle of water around all day and measure how much water you are consuming. Buy a water filter jug for the home or invest in a water filter for your tap to ensure top quality water, free of chlorine and other impurities. Increase the intake of water for more active days.

5

E at f i v e o r s i x m e a l s e a c h d ay

6

Plan and prepare meals

When calorie intake is lowered, the body’s metabolism naturally slows down. To ensure that it doesn’t slow too much, eat five to six small, low-fat meals every day. Eat three meals that are made up of carbohydrates, protein and fat and two to three small, protein only meals. By planning and preparing meals for the week it’s possible to know exactly what you are consuming while saving both time and money.

50 HEALTH & BEAUTY

7

Ensure you never feel hungry

8

C o n s u m e at l e a s t 2 0 c a l o r i e s p e r k i l o o f b o d y w e i g h t p e r d ay

9

Ta p e r o f f c a r b o h y d r at e i n ta k e d u r i n g t h e d ay

Avoid starving yourself. This will only increase the fat stored in the body and can lead to binge eating. If you are thinking of food too often this could be due to a low blood sugar level, dehydration, a nutrient deficiency or simply because you haven’t eaten enough.

This calorie measurement is found to be the absolute minimum calorie intake to achieve weight-loss without causing nutritional deficiencies. This measurement ensures energy levels remain high and that the metabolism doesn’t slow too much. Note, this is the minimum. If active, increase the calorie intake so that the body has enough energy to function correctly.

Try to eat your largest meal at the start of the day when your body needs the energy most. As the day progresses, decrease the size of the portions and the amount of carbohydrates consumed.

10

M o d e r at e a l c o h o l consumption

Alcohol is a poison to the body that gets metabolised quicker and takes priority over other macro nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Consuming an intake greater than 1 to 3 glasses a week will limit weight loss results and increase the storage of fat in cells.

Another Birthday & Driverless Cars! By ANNIE MALONE

ANOTHER BIRTHDAY HAS PASSED and I have been in business for 29 years. This has coincided with some speaking engagements, which suggest that age gives one kudos, a swag full of business experiences to share and stories to tell. Yes, I have seen many changes in the way we think and do things. Some for the better and some not. I was a teenager of the late seventies when a tape deck/radio combination was hip cool in the kombi van. We even had a heater and air conditioning, and I’m not talking about an open window in summer! Living in the year 2018, well that sounded too futuristic. Now phones fit in your pocket, imagine that, no cords, and a whole encyclopaedia set as well, just hit that Google button... So…driverless cars….no, it will never catch on…could it? Growing up, we had an old cattle truck. The truck had lights to drive at night but it didn’t have flickers or turning indicators. So the practical people of my father’s generation put a lever with a metal hand on the end for the driver to extend to the side when stopping or turning. Other drivers would understand and take caution accordingly. It all worked splendidly. 54 FOOD & WINE

Being a farm kid, learning to drive tractors, farm bikes and cars at a young age around the paddocks taught us all sorts of skills. All those buttons, throttles, gear sticks and clutches were an amazing thing to master as a kid. Getting my license in my parents’ car at 17 was the bee’s knees. Freedom at last to drive the open roads and to make my own decisions. Skip to 2018 and yes, I have to admit the cars are much more comfortable. They have reversing cameras to save turning your head, beeping lights when a door isn’t closed, flashing lights if you are too close to any object, things that go “ping” that have you quickly reading the manual to see what needs checking. The car has become a live animal with a mind of its own and we are using our minds less. That’s the bit that concerns me. Are we relying on technology way too much? Apparently, in the future, our cars will talk to each other via satellite. There will be no more running into each other, cars will also know the speed limit and adhere to it. No more speeding fines and we will be able to sit in our cars as if we are being chauffeur driven and be able to finish our breakfast, do a crossword, catch up on social media, text a few friends or even press a

button to open the window to let off a bit of steam and shout at another car. It all sounds marvellous. What happens when the big satellite in the sky is out of order or worse still, compromised by enemy threat? That’s a big spanner in the works, what then? Will we be able to fend for ourselves, take back control of our machines, remember the road rules and rely on common sense with a good dose of road courtesy? I hope that mechanics in overalls, who are handy with spanners and carry an oil rag, will not be totally superseded by the type that carry dust covers and a complimentary bottle of water and call a service a computer diagnostic check on your mechanical beast. Enough said, I’m off on my fat tyre bike to ride the Gibb River road. No GPS, I’ll just follow the road signs and pedal a lot. What’s that you say… riderless bikes, that’s spooky….no never. It will never catch on… could it?

Winter Recipe

Beef Casserole with Sweet Potato This winter warmer with its crunchy sweet potato topping is a classic seasonal dish.

Ingredients

500g gravy beef, chopped into bitesize chunks 1 leek, finely chopped 1 stick of celery, finely chopped 1 clove of garlic, crushed 1 tbsp plain flour 2 carrots, chopped 2 to 3 potatoes, chopped 200ml red wine 400ml beef stock 1 tbsp tomato puree 1 tsp dried mixed herbs (your preference) 500g sweet potatoes, peeled and grated 2 tbsp oil

Method For the Casserole Preheat the oven to 180ËšC. Toss the beef in a plastic bag with the flour and some salt and pepper. Fry the leek and celery in a little oil for 2 minutes. Add the garlic and fry until the leek is softened. Remove from the pan. Increase the heat and add the beef. Stir to seal the beef and to add some colour. Put on a tight fitting lid and remove from the heat for 5 minutes. Remove the lid, add the leek mixture to the beef and return the pan to a medium heat. Add the wine and stir, trying to incorporate any bits stuck to the bottom of the pan. Let this mixture simmer for 2 minutes. Add the tomato paste and beef stock, stirring.

Bring the mixture to the boil and add the carrots, potatoes and dried herbs. Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish, add the lid and place in the oven.

For the Topping Mix the grated sweet potato together with the oil in a bowl. Add salt and pepper. Remove the casserole from the oven after an hour and 15 minutes. Remove the lid and top with the sweet potato mixture. Return the casserole to the oven for another 30 to 40 minutes until the topping is browned.

Tips Add mushrooms, parsnips or any choice of beans for a different take on this delicious dish. Enjoy!

The winery continues to have success outside Australia, having recently sent off its third overseas wine order. It received a very positive reception at the China Food and Drink Fair in Chengdu and was represented at the 20th anniversary of VinExpo in Hong Kong earlier this year. Australia was featured as the “Country of Honour” and Windfall Estate was very excited to have its Single Handed Merlot present to fly the Geographe Flag. In addition to its wine successes, the estate’s vineyard cottage continues to be popular with visitors to the area and was recently awarded a 9.5 score from Booking.com. Finally, here is a must-visit Geographe winery. Whicher Ridge Wines is located along a scenic drive south of Busselton and, as well as having a charming cellar door, features a wine sensory garden, the only one of its kind in Australia. The garden design is in a figure eight with separate sections themed to seven different wine varieties. Each wine has its own ‘Descriptor Bed’ planted with fruit trees, flowers and herbs, describing the aromas and flavours in the wine. The adjacent ‘Affinity Bed’ has plantings of fruit, seasonal vegetables and herbs that have an affinity for, or match with, that particular wine. Visitors can take a self-guided tour through the garden or book in for a Wine Sensory Indulgence Tour with Cathy, the winemaker, for a combined tasting and tour of the garden. This family-owned artisan winery makes its award winning 5-star rated wines from grapes grown on the property as well as from grapes sourced from the Margaret River and the Great Southern wine regions. The range of wines produced by Cathy and Neil Howard include a barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc, a Viognier and the highly awarded Elevation Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery also makes two wines under The Jetty label, and is about to release a new wine, a sparkling Chardonnay, Whitetail, which will complement the winery’s popular Redtail Sparkling Shiraz. Both the cellar door and garden are open 5 days a week, from Thursday to Monday.
