JULIUS CAESAR

PRESENTED BY BELL SHAKESPEARE Mandurah Performing Arts Centre

Tues 14 August, 7.30pm BRUTUS IS SUSPICIOUS. Cassius is conspiring. Caesar’s days are numbered. Loved by the people, Caesar’s power is growing, which is dangerous if you live in a world driven by ego and idealism. Those that rise too fast must be dealt with. For the good of the country. For the good of those who wish to be rulers themselves. Julius Caesar is Shakespeare’s political thriller, a masterpiece of intrigue and treachery. Stand witness to the assassination that leads to a life and death struggle for power in the Republic. Citizens mutiny, Mark Antony schemes and the fate of Rome hangs in the balance. Bell Shakespeare’s Associate Director, James Evans, will direct a production that’s seething with rage, leaving audiences breathless at how quickly violence reveals the fragility of democracy. Starring Kenneth Ransom (Gods of Egypt, Belvoir’s Prize Fighter) as 12 WHAT'S ON

Caesar and featuring an ensemble cast, including Ivan Donato (Richard 3), Emily Havea, Louisa Mignone, Nick Simpson-Deeks and Russell Smith, this production will tour to 27 venues around Australia. Experience the tension between aspiration and ambition, the triumphal entrances and brutal exits, as it is all laid on the line for Rome. JOHN WILLIAMSON THE BUTCHERBIRD TOUR

Mandurah Performing Arts Centre

Fri 5 October, 8pm

John Williamson

legendary AUSTRALIAN singer/songwriter John Williamson is back on the road with ‘The Butcherbird Tour’, which will be performed across Australia over the next 12 months. Sharing with his audiences his biggest hits and latest musical contributions, his new tour comes off the back of his new album by the same name, released August 2018. The new album and tour will continue to see John pen the stories into song that he is passionate about; the country, the people and the

community in Goldfields, WA, by artist Martine Perret. This conceptual body of multimedia work goes beyond documentary and photojournalism, creating an aesthetic and creative platform highlighting the Elders’ connection to land whilst illuminating the cultural significance of Australia's endangered languages. Ngala Wongga (Come Talk) presents a series of evocative portraits inviting the audience to engage with each individual and their personal stories

enhanced through a poignant and haunting story-telling installation. Gungurrunga Ngawa (Look Above) is a series of aerial photographs that captures the ethereal beauty and unique shapes and textures of the Goldfield's salt lakes. Using landscapes, portraiture and multi-media, Martine Perret's work intertwines the story of an extraordinary and ancient land, peoples, culture and language. Examining the interconnectedness of people with the land, this exhibition highlights the importance

fight for what is right. Having created some of Australia’s most recognised unofficial anthems, he is firmly cemented in the nation’s musical culture. His tributes to Aussie legends and unsung heroes, together with his tender ballads, have captured the spirit of the nation in song unlike no other. Call him what you want, Mallee Boy, True Blue or just plain Fair Dinkum, there is no denying that after more than forty years in the music industry, John Williamson is truly an Australian icon. of preserving the endangered languages of the Goldfields. Capturing the essence of each Elder, it shares the uniqueness and significance of their experiences and stories. Martine Perret is a French-born Australian photographer based in Margaret River, WA, whose professional career as a freelance photojournalist took her to TimorLeste in 2003. For the next decade, Martine worked for the United Nations as a peacekeeping mission photographer documenting life in conflict zones. This took her all over the world to Burundi, South Sudan, East Timor, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and most recently West Africa. Embrace the immersive and multi-sensorial journey of Ngala Wongga (Come Talk) – Cultural significance of languages in the Goldfields and engage with some of the world’s oldest and most endangered languages. Ngala Wongga (Come Talk) is a collaboration between Martine Perret – photography and sound designer, and Jonathan Mustard – digital production technician, video and sound designer. Field liaison and cultural guidance in the Goldfields is provided by Gary Cooper. The project is supported by Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

PERTH HEAT & MANDURAH BASEBALL WITH 15 CLAXTON SHIELD TITLES to their name, the Perth Heat are one of the most successful sporting franchises, not only in Western Australia, but the whole country. Playing their home games at the Perth HarleyDavidson Ballpark in Thornlie, the Heat are one of eight teams who compete in Australian Baseball League (ABL), with their season held between November and February. 2018/19 will see the ABL branch out into Asia for the very first time, with a Korean team added to the competition, alongside a New Zealand-based team. The move marks the first time an Australian-based league has incorporated a team from the Asian market, and the Heat are excited to be a part of it all. The Heat also has a proud history of producing local

players who go on to play on the national stage with three West Australian pitchers currently playing in the U.S. Major League Baseball; Warwick Saupold, Liam Hendriks and Peter Moylan. As well as this, the Heat and Baseball WA have close connections with Peel Diamond Sports - the body overseeing baseball, tee-ball and softball in the Mandurah area. With a renewed focus on growing baseball within the Mandurah region over the past decade, highlighted by the achievements of the Coastal Bay Sharks, who finished 12th at the recent Australian Little League National Championships, there is every hope that the first Mandurah-born Heat player is just around the corner. With multiple members from the Mandurah area, and situated under an hour from the city centre, the Perth Heat is a great place to spend your summer. WINTER WARMth

The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert.

Winter is officially here, although it’s not all that bad! A new season places new demands on a wardrobe and that can only mean one thing: shopping! Read on to find out all about the latest seasonal trends that are just waiting to be snapped up and taken home. A favourite winter indulgence has always been searching for the new statement coat so be sure to consider the hugely popular oversized blazer this season. Androgynous and incredibly easy to wear, it has wide shoulders and a boxy frame that balances perfectly with skinny pants or a full midi skirt. Also on trend this season is a plaid double-breasted overcoat. Its simple clean silhouette allows a check in any colourway to stand out. Leave it unbuttoned over pants or a feminine winter dress. For unbeatable cosiness, invest in a teddy coat. It will literally feel like being hugged by a muchloved teddy bear! The roomy, highly textural coats are designed to generously envelop the wearer and they look great over anything from casual pieces for the weekend to dressier outfits with heels.

And just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that dresses can’t be worn for a couple of months. Invest in a dress with a light, sheer or silky fabric – that way it can be layered with a shirt or thin sweater underneath, or with a slouchy sweater over the top. This season, there are plenty of floral prints with yellows, as well as florals with a black, dark green or navy background. Go for a wrap dress that swings or a midi dress with ruffles and frills. Look out for trending features, like a high neckline or deep V-neck with voluminous sleeves. Add a pair of ankle boots and a soft lightweight knit for warmth. Typical winter colours always include black and navy along with rich and alluring jewel tones but plaid in any colour is set to be popular as well as welcome shades of pale blue, lavender, soft candy pink and mint. Yellow, particularly in marigold, is a standout colour for winter and is so uplifting when worn as a backdrop to florals for a flowing midi dress or a billowy-sleeved blouse. Opting for an accessory, such as a small cross-body bag, in a soft colour or a vibrant yellow, is an effective yet safe way to enjoy the look.

Design For The Home

THE KITCHEN Concrete - it’s a material that has traditionally been seen as an outdoor product but concrete is increasingly being used inside the home and is currently one of the most on-trend finishes being utilised in the modern kitchen.

P

erfect for modern family living, this timeless surface offers interesting textures, is extremely hardwearing and can totally transform a living space with its unique character and colours.

24 HOME

Increasingly popular as a benchtop in contemporary and open-plan kitchens, its dark-grey tones can be complemented by either white cabinets or juxtaposed against natural woods to create a stylish, eye-catching

Image courtesy of Caesarstone® - Rugged Concrete 4033 look. Ideal as a finish to an island bench, it’s also being progressively used in the design of dining tables and coffee tables. Also, expect to see concrete being increasingly integrated into sinks, flooring and decorative accessories. Creating an instant industrial look to a room, it’s incredibly easy to maintain once sealed, stained and polished – a procedure normally

carried out on the surface before it’s purchased. Compared to some recent interior designs that have focused on bold patterns and bright vivid colours, concrete offers a more subtle approach. However, being such a heavy material to work with, when used

 HOME 25

in design, it lends a mass of visual weight to any space. Instantly drawing the eye, it creates an instant focal point in today’s modern kitchen.

The Scullery

For those that have the space, it could be the answer to all kitchen clutter and, if current home designs are anything to go by, it looks like the scullery is here to stay. An additional room or extra space that is typically used for the preparation of food or drinks, the scullery will almost always be located either behind or alongside the main kitchen area, often adjacent to the laundry. Usually containing a second sink and additional kitchen storage, it offers convenient, practical space and is perfect for hiding away the everyday mess created in the kitchen. With the kitchen very much the hub of the home for the modern family, it has become the most popular place for family and friends to congregate. This has meant that socialising in the kitchen has become very much the norm and as hosts multi-task, a scullery 26 HOME

can be an ideal place to clear away cooking utensils or crockery allowing for the kitchen to remain functional and easy to cook in. Recent design trends have also seen a rise in popularity of the minimalist look in the kitchen, which is difficult to achieve as the baggage of daily life can take over. Store cookery books in the scullery, kids’ lunch boxes and even the kettle, the microwave and the food processor in order to help create a sense of calm in the kitchen. Installing a scullery can often be a relatively straightforward process with plumbing points typically in the near vicinity and laundry space able to be converted. Varying in size and scope from large pantries to full-scale second kitchens, the key in its design is in understanding how it is most likely to be used and the specific functions that need to be performed.

For further information on installing a scullery or on the latest kitchen trends, contact local experts Merlin Cabinets on 9584 2822 or visit the showroom at Unit 3, 14 Thornborough Road.

Design For The Home

W I N D O W T R E AT M E N T S T h e R e t u r n o f t h e C u r ta i n

There’s no better way of updating the look of a room than with a pair of new curtains, and the good news for curtain lovers is that they are making a huge comeback in today’s contemporary home. Read on for some of the latest trends now emerging.

W av e a n d S - F o l d C u r ta i n s

Wave and S-Fold curtain headings are an exciting new contemporary style, which allows curtains to hang in a continuous wave creating a smooth, simple and elegant look. Bold statements can be achieved when this heading is used in combination with block-out roller-blinds or a block-out curtain behind the sheer. This enables the sheer to become a feature in itself and provide a stylish, soft and elegant feel. A sure sign in the increased interest of these curtains is their regular appearance in recently completed display homes, proving their current popularity with architects and designers.

P r a c t i c a l B l o c k - O u t C u r ta i n s

Both blinds and shutters have been popular additions to bedrooms in recent years but their effectiveness in shutting out the light can be questionable. 28 HOME

For those looking to cover windows in a bedroom to optimise sleep, curtains with block-out lining can often be the best option. Able to be designed to run the full length to the floor while amply covering the window on either side, these types of curtains are highly effective in blocking out sunlight. They also have the added bonus of providing extra insulation to a room; keeping it warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

New Technology

Even curtains can now be controlled at the touch of a button through the latest motorisation technology. Enjoy convenience of operation through automation and make it easier to protect furniture, rugs and floor coverings from the harmful effects of the sun. As well as there being no need for chains and cords, the life of window treatments is increased by reducing the strain and wear and tear that hand operated treatments often suffer from. For further information on the latest curtain design trends, visit Luxaflex Mandurah at Unit 3, 11 Davey Street, or call 9586 2266.

GOLF TIPS W I T H C R A I G " TA P P I E " TA P P

H

ello everyone, I hope you are hitting them well and holing plenty of putts. Hitting a golf shot and playing golf are two totally different things. Some players are great at hitting on the range but still end up with a horrible score and then you see another guy that swings in a very unorthodox manner and somehow he beats you every time. Most players I see at the range worry far too much about how pretty their golf swing looks rather than concentrating on the type of shots they are actually hitting. To play better golf, every golfer needs to have a few basic skills up the sleeve. So next time you go to the range, here are a couple of ideas to work on to get that ball in the hole a little quicker. Every player no matter how good he or she might be has days when the swing doesn’t feel right. Therefore, everyone needs to have a stock go-to shot. It might be a blunt fade that finds the fairway or a low draw with a long iron but always regularly practise a shot to use when everything feels a little awkward. Always do the yardages to the back of the green. This is something that everyone should do all of the time but particularly important when we are slightly off our game. For example, when playing a course that has coloured flags to indicate the pin position, always add 15 metres to a front red flag, add 10 metres to a middle 32 SPORT & RECREATION

white flag and add 5 metres to a back blue flag. This way when hitting a good shot the ball will be past the flag, hit an average shot the ball will be close and hit a poor shot and the ball will still reach the front of the green. When playing golf we are out there for several hours so it’s really important to be able to switch concentration on and off. The best way to do this is to imagine a 2 metre circle around the ball. Only when we are in this circle do we think about the shot in hand. When outside this area, simply talk about the weather, the footy or any other topic of interest. This will keep us where we need to be and not walking around the course with our brains in golfing overload. Have fun!!!!! Yes, it is, after all, just a game. We need to enjoy our partners’ company, enjoy the beautiful golf courses and, most of all, enjoy the walk. Add these few tips to your normal round of golf and I guarantee you will definitely be scoring much better and having a more enjoyable experience. Good luck and good golfing!

unbury-based skaters Andrew Beattie, Madison Bright and Laura Cameron have recently returned from a highly successful visit to an acclaimed international dance skating competition held in Porto, Portugal. Competing against ten nationalities from three separate continents in the Chapatim Roller Cup, Andrew took out first place in the Youth Men’s event, Madison was placed fourth in the Youth Ladies’ event and Laura finished eleventh in the Junior Ladies’ event. Elite coach, international judge and Manager of The Rink, Bunbury, Susan Brooks was understandably delighted with the results. “The three skaters produced outstanding performances in their grades and deserve to be

recognised and congratulated for their achievements. This was a high standard European-based event and a first for the three in their skating careers.” The results are also a testament to the skaters’ dedication to their training and to the support and coaching received at The Rink, Bunbury. All the skaters started in the sport by attending Learn To Skate Classes at the centre and now train both on and off skates while skating up to 6 times a week. Taught and mentored by Susan, the skaters are supported financially by their parents and, along with Coach Susan, the trip was also attended by Andrew and Madison’s parents and by a trainee Gold Level judge. In a measure of the importance of the event, Australia sent a total of twelve competitors to Portugal and won a

F a m i ly V i o l e n c e Restraining Orders

I

B Y D AV I D M O R R I S S E Y

n July last year a new category of Restraining Order was created in Western Australia. The Family Violence Restraining Order (FVRO) was introduced to address the particular dynamics and issues that are associated with ‘family violence.’ The FVRO is very similar to the better-known Violence Restraining Order (VRO) except that it is intended for use by people that are, or were, in a family or domestic relationship. The aim of the new legislation (Restraining Orders and Related Legislation Amendment (Family Violence) Act 2016) is to increase the safety of victims of family violence and strengthen effective interventions targeting perpetrators of family violence and abuse.

Expanded definition used f o r f a m i ly v i o l e n c e

The FVRO uses the expanded definition of ‘family violence’ in the Family Law Act 1975, which includes ‘violence’ or the ‘threat of violence’. Importantly, it is not just physical violence; it includes other behaviour that is, unfortunately, very common during separation, such as, coercion or control; financial abuse; repeated derogatory remarks; or causing fear.

E x p o s i n g a c h i l d t o f a m i ly v i o l e n c e

The FVRO is particularly concerned with the exposure of children to family violence. The law considers that a child is exposed to family violence if the child sees or hears family violence, or otherwise experiences the effects of family violence (for example, where the child witnesses an assault; overhears a threat; cleans up after a family member has intentionally 42 PROPERTY & LAW

damaged property; or is present when police or ambulance officer attend to an incident).

Children protected by FVRO

The incidence of children being placed on the FVRO is increasing, which creates a new problem, the restrained person (usually the father) can no longer spend time with the children (and more importantly, the children can no longer spend time with both parents). Unfortunately, due to the backlog in the courts this means that it may be many months before there is a hearing for the restrained person to object to, or vary the order. Fortunately, there is a compromise.

Conduct agreement order

The new legislation has introduced the concept of a ‘conduct agreement’ which can be entered into if both parties agree. The benefits of entering into a conduct agreement are that it is still enforceable and carries the same consequences for breaching a FVRO, however, it can be drafted so that the children may spend time with the restrained person while providing adequate deterrence from further family violence.

Consequences of breaching

The consequence of breaching a Conduct Agreement are the same as (and just as serious as for beaching) a Family Violence Restraining Order, which can result in the restrained person being arrested on the spot and held in custody until being brought before the court. While a conduct agreement may be a good compromise and alternative to the FVRO, it is to be taken just as seriously. David Morrissey is a Lawyer at Perth Family Law Centre.

FOCUS ON ... TERRACE ART FRAMERS it's fifteen years since Terrace Art Framers began selling Christian Fletcher images in its Mandurah gallery and, as exclusive stockists, the gallery continues to house the largest range of framed and unframed images and giftware outside Christian’s Dunsborough gallery. Owners Rob and Shar first met Christian in Dunsborough in 1994 when he was an up and coming photographer in the local south west market scene. In 2000, Rob began working alongside Christian in his new Busselton gallery, helping him in the development of larger format printing and framing, allowing for Christian’s work to be reproduced onto different media that could be displayed more effectively and spectacularly in

customers’ homes. 2003 saw Rob and Shar move to Mandurah to set up their own framing and gallery business in Old Tuckey House on Mandurah Terrace. Bringing Christian’s photographs with them, they now operate out of their Smart Street Mall gallery where larger premises have allowed them to combine both a gallery and framing workshop incorporating the latest machinery and printers. Fifteen years on, the team at Terrace Art Framers continues to work with Christian in the development of new ideas and trends, keeping his brand at the forefront of landscape photography in Australia.

Christian Fletcher has been a professional photographer for almost 30 years and still retains immense passion and enthusiasm for taking a great photograph. A multi-award-winning photographer, Christian has perfected the art of light, composition, colour and post processing. WINTER WORKOUT

Motivating ourselves to exercise at this time of the year can be hard work. It’s not easy to get going on a winter’s morning with the wind howling and rain lashing down outside. Instead, the idea of cocooning ourselves indoors with hot tea and cookies seems much more appealing! But before we know it, spring pops up, next we’re almost into summer and, suddenly, we are desperately trying to get our bodies beach-ready for the long hot days by the ocean. So rather than feeling bloated through overindulging on comfort foods and sluggish through a lack of exercise, focus on feeling brighter and more energetic and start planning on how to get into shape in plenty of time for summer. How can we shake off our lethargy? The answer: we need to kick start out metabolism. Our metabolism is the result of all the processes in our body working together to create the energy that keeps us going. When these processes occur, our bodies burn calories and produce energy. Our metabolic rate can be high, low or somewhere in the middle but generally it’s higher when we are younger. The higher the rate, the easier it is to lose weight and, as we get older and our rate slows 48 HEALTH & BEAUTY

down, we are more susceptible to weight gain. In short, a higher metabolic rate not only means we are burning more calories, it also means we have more energy. It’s a win-win situation. Here are some great ways to boost the metabolism, lose body fat and discover boundless waves of energy:-

E at 5 o r 6 s m a l l m e a l s

Eating raises our metabolic rate. However, eating 2 or 3 large meals a day encourages the body to store extra calories as fat because it knows it will not have food again for a while. Eat 5 or 6 small portions every 2 or 3 hours.

A d d m e ta b o l i s m b o o s t e r s t o y o u r d i e t

Start the day with rolled oats, natural yoghurt or eggs. Then incorporate almonds and peanut butter (in limited amounts!), whole grains, berries, apples, vegetables (spinach is especially good), turkey, chicken breast, salmon, chilli, cayenne pepper, garlic, green tea, mustard and plenty of water.

D o c a r d i o va s c u l a r e x e r c i s e

This can be as easy as going for a walk; it will feel so much better than staying indoors. Every few minutes, move on to a jog for 1 or 2 minutes then back to a brisk walking pace again. This will work wonders for the

body’s metabolic rate. Or, try running up some stairs and walking back down a few times.

D o r e s i s ta n c e t r a i n i n g

As well as defining body shape, resistance training increases muscle size, helping to burn more fat and calories even when we are not working out. For those who haven’t done resistance training before, always ensure advice is sought from a qualified instructor for safer and longer lasting results.

Non-Surgical Facelifts

T h e L at e s t i n P R O V E N Proven Technology

A

BY DR ARGERO XAFTELLIS s we age, our skin loses its ability to create the strongest type of collagen, resulting in sagging and a crepe paper like appearance. Until recently, the only option was surgery, which carries significant risks and recovery time. The latest technology is micro-focused ultrasound (Ulthera), which targets collagen regeneration from the upper layers of the skin all the way down to the muscle. This results in a lifting and tightening of the skin. Ulthera provides a non-surgical face, brow, neck and décolletage lift without downtime from side effects. It’s a one-off treatment to reset the skin that can be repeated every one to two years for maintenance. Ulthera utilises the body’s natural collagenation processes and is perfect for patients who want to avoid wrinkle fillers or relaxers. Ulthera is the only device recognised for safety and with proven results in both tightening and lifting by the Australian and USA Governments. So beware of the fake machines riding on the Ultherapy name, which may provide no effect, or worse, risk disfigurement. Just how good is it? Pretty good it seems as it has a number of famous ambassadors, including Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez. As a doctor who has specialised in aesthetics for over 20 years, Ulthera has become a major weapon in my personal arsenal against aging. Now even more so as I am getting closer to menopausal years where collagen production dramatically declines due to loss of oestragen. Women from 35 years onwards, regardless of skin colour or types, who want to treat and prevent aging should consider Ultherapy.

Restaurant Review

Quarterdeck waterfront dining located in picturesque Mandurah Ocean Marina and with stunning waterfront views, Quarterdeck Waterfront Dining might be a relative newcomer to Mandurah’s eating out scene but it has quickly gained an ardent following. Time for The Mandurah Life to find out what all the fuss is about! Arriving for lunch, we were warmly greeted by owner Michelle and immediately shown to our table. With alfresco dining available on the decking and plentiful seating inside, every table at Quarterdeck offers views over the water towards Dolphin Quay. With its relaxed welcoming vibe and modern contemporary interior, it is the perfect location to enjoy a meal with friends or family and certainly takes some beating. Comfortably seated, it was now time to study the menu. Open 7 days for breakfast and lunch with dinner available Wednesday to Sunday, Head Chef Clive Munn and his experienced team have clearly pulled out all the stops to create something a bit special. With a strong focus on sourcing fresh local produce, dishes are an innovative take on modern Australian cuisine and, by the look of the choice available at lunchtime, it was not going to be easy decision. With a wide selection of starters and share plates, salads, burgers, paninis and mains, we eventually decided to order the Charcuterie Board as our starter. Served with 4 different cured meats, including some quite fabulous chorizo, together with some tasty warm olives and feta and ciabatta bread, this proved to be an excellent decision. However, 56 FOOD & WINE

given the chance to visit again, the Fruites De Mer would have to be high up on the list to try - a mouthwatering selection of garlic prawns, smoked salmon, seared scallops, pickled octopus all served with a generous portion of ciabatta toast and lime and aioli dressing. While we were there, we were lucky enough to try the garlic Kuro prawns. Coated in bamboo charcoal and delicious panko crumbs, these are definitely not to be missed. It was to be an equally difficult decision when choosing our main. Was it to be the restaurant’s highly popular Chicken Ballantyne, boned chicken stuffed with feta, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and sage served with spring vegetables and a special ginger

and soy dressing? Or perhaps one of the day’s Chef Specials, Chorizo, Bacon and Pinenut Risotto served with shallots, tomatoes and capsicums? In the end, we decided on the Fish of the Day, a wonderful piece of perfectly cooked snapper served with a spiced pumpkin purée with braised fennel, lemon oil and salsa. Wow! With its winning combination of fabulous food, attentive service and sensational surroundings, Quarterdeck Waterfront dining might qualify as one of Mandurah’s best kept secrets but don’t expect that to last for too long. Having singlehandedly raised the bar when it comes to the quality of food available in Mandurah Marina, this is a must-visit destination for Mandurah foodies.

Winter Recipe

sweet potato topped beef casserole

Sweet potatoes, with their vitamins, minerals, fibre and beta-carotene antioxidant, are well and truly in season and add a deliciously crunchy topping to this winter warmer.

Ingredients 500g gravy beef, chopped into bitesize chunks 1 leek, finely chopped 1 stick of celery, finely chopped 1 clove of garlic, crushed

1 tbsp plain flour 2 carrots, chopped 2 to 3 potatoes, chopped 200ml red wine 400ml beef stock 1 tbsp tomato purée

Method For the Casserole Preheat the oven to 180˚C. Toss the beef in a plastic bag with the flour and some salt and pepper. Fry the leek and celery in a little oil for 2 minutes. Add the garlic and fry until the leek is softened. Remove from the pan. Increase the heat and add the beef. Stir to seal the beef and to add some colour. Put on a tight fitting lid and remove from the heat for 5 minutes.

1 tsp dried mixed herbs (your preference) 500g sweet potatoes, peeled and grated 2 tbsp oil

Remove the lid, add the leek mixture to the beef and return the pan to a medium heat. Add the wine and stir, trying to incorporate any bits stuck to the bottom of the pan. Let this mixture simmer for 2 minutes. Add the tomato paste and beef stock, stirring. Bring the mixture to the boil and add the carrots, potatoes and dried herbs.

Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish, add the lid and place in the oven. For the Topping Mix the grated sweet potato together with the oil in a bowl. Add salt and pepper. Remove the casserole from the oven after an hour and 15 minutes. Remove the lid and top with the sweet potato mixture. Return the casserole to the oven for another 30 to 40 minutes until the topping is browned.

tIPS Add mushrooms, parsnips or any choice of beans for a different take on this delicious dish. Enjoy!

beet-choc-chip cupcakes Need an excuse to make cake? Well, firstly, beetroot is now at its best plus it is packed full of vitamins, minerals and powerful antioxidants. Secondly, cupcakes are perfect for portion control.

Thirdly, and probably most importantly, these beet-choc-chip cupcakes are delicious! Makes 12

Ingredients 1 large beetroot 140g plain flour 60g cocoa powder 2 tsp (rounded) baking powder

150g caster sugar 2 medium eggs, beaten 116ml sunflower oil 60g chocolate chips

Method Beetroot preparation Preheat the oven to 180˚C Fan. Wash and trim the beetroot and place it on a baking tray. Add 2 tablespoons of oil. Turn the beetroot so it is evenly coated with the oil. Bake for around 40 minutes until tender. Peel the beetroot and then allow it to cool. Chop and purée the beetroot. You will need around 150g of purée for the cupcake batter. Cupcake batter Preheat the oven to 170˚C Fan and line a muffin tin with paper cases. Place 150g beetroot purée into a mixing bowl. Sieve the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder into the bowl. Add the sugar and beaten eggs. Mix together until it feels smooth. Add the oil slowly and beat until fully combined. Mix in the chocolate chips. Spoon the batter into the cases. Place the tin into the centre of the oven and bake for around 20 minutes. Remove the tin from the oven and place the cakes on a cooling rack. Allow to cool. Top the cupcakes with a simple chocolate frosting and enjoy!
