A Note From The Editor

W

elcome to the second edition of North of the River, Perth’s brand new bi-annual lifestyle magazine, bringing you the very best of life north of the Swan. Firstly, many thanks to all of you who have got in touch since the release of issue one. I’m delighted that North of the River has proved so popular and it was great to hear from so many of our new readers, some of whom had already seen and read its sister publication, South of the River. Both of our publications have clearly resonated with both residents and visitors alike and we have certainly enjoyed putting the magazines together while hopefully awakening you to a few local gems. Please do continue to send in your comments and suggestions, they are very much appreciated. It’s clear that we live in an increasingly digital age driven by the inexorable growth of social media usage. However, our more traditional form of communication, print, is still very much alive and kicking and glossy, high quality magazines will continue to thrive through their unique way of interacting with their audience. Magazines are portable, don’t take an age to re-boot and don’t run out of battery power. Entertaining, informative and tactile - where else can you find information on a myriad of topics so quickly, so easily and for free? It was once said that television would kill off radio and video hire shops would kill off the cinema. Neither has happened and the truth is that all media will continue to co-exist. For us, though, ink on paper will always be the medium for luxury and highly photographic content. Enough of my rant! Now, before you do anything else please turn to page 98. Stunning, isn’t it? Well, thanks to John Miller Design of Yallingup and Margaret River, one lucky reader will be getting their hands on this beauty. An 18ct gold bangle set with four sparkling diamonds worth a cool $7500 no less! Don’t miss the chance to enter. Enjoy the read and, remember, if you would like to receive your own personal copy of North of the River magazine delivered directly to your home, simply email your name and address to enquiries@blueskymedia.net.au Yes, it’s free! Until next time,

ABORIGINART UPON ENTERING ABORIGINART

Indigenous Fine Art Gallery, Fremantle, it’s immediately apparent that this is a very special place. Showcasing a remarkable selection of magnificent artworks, it’s almost impossible not to feel immersed in the spiritually calming energy the paintings exude. Specialising in art from the central and western desert regions, gallery owners Bill Green and his wife, Victoria, offer a refreshingly unique, boutique buying experience for quality indigenous art. And, despite the artistic pedigree of the artists represented in the gallery, many of the paintings are surprisingly affordable. Fostering strong relationships with its artists has been paramount to the success of Aboriginart over the past eleven years. The priority has always been the artists and their welfare with each painting hanging in the gallery ethically sourced and the artists handsomely rewarded. “We methodically handpick each painting we sell. After all, aside from them being beautiful works of art, we are also selling investment pieces so we owe it to our many customers and collectors, both locally and overseas, to provide only the very best quality,” says Bill. As a testament to the calibre of the work exhibited, twenty-three of the artists have had their work collected by The Australian National Gallery in Canberra also featuring in many major public and private collections worldwide. They have also encouraged younger emerging artists whose works have provided an economical entry price point into the highly sought-after world of Aboriginal art. There’s a diverse selection of paintings and styles on offer in the gallery from energetic splashes of vibrant colour to the most meticulously crafted dot work. Also on display are some extraordinary pieces in minimalistic black and white; these desert contemporary art pieces are a joy to behold. Each spiritually empowering painting draws upon a rich and intrinsic tapestry of traditional cultures and customs that date back many thousands of years, well before Australia was populated by the white man. “The advantages of investing in quality Aboriginal art are as diverse as they are rewarding. Not only will you be making an aesthetic and potential financial investment for yourself, but you will also be investing in an altruistic sense for the artists themselves and their dependent extended families,” says Victoria. SUE KALAB SPECIALISING IN WATERCOLOURS depicting Australian

nature, Bunbury artist Sue Kalab began her professional art career in 1981 after moving to the Croajingolong National Park in Mallacoota, Victoria. Here, she took inspiration from the natural beauty of the area, observing nesting birds, wild flowers and pods of dolphins, her work being a response to the power of natural images found during bush walks and beach wanders. After moving back to WA, Sue lived and worked in an Aboriginal community in the Pilbara before moving to Bunbury in 1995 where she established her beachside studio. Her style of work has been described by Perth arts writer Julie Prott as “cultivated rusticity” while art critic Judith McGrath suggests the viewer “lingers and takes the time to engage with these powerful works of gentle beauty.” Others comment about its timelessness and meditative qualities whereas Sue herself describes her work as soft realism. “My work endeavours to portray 26 ART | GALLERY SHOWCASE

the peaceful and serene qualities one finds in nature – the timelessness, the sense of perpetuity, and nature’s unobtrusiveness. I see great loveliness in the things I choose to paint, and I try to touch a deep part of people’s nature.”

christian fletcher WITH GALLERIES IN Mandurah and Dunsborough, Christian Fletcher is one of Western Australia’s most awarded and respected photographers. His love of photography, the Australian landscape and its inspirational visuals have given rise to a career spanning over 25 years, and his extraordinary collection of images has gained him huge popularity both at home and abroad. His vast body of work not only includes his collection of Australian coastal images but also takes in landscapes in New Zealand, America, Canada, Papua New Guinea and even Iceland. Christian started out learning his craft by developing black and white images in a secluded darkroom in his parents’ house. After working as a photographer focusing on commercial, portrait and wedding photography, a visit to a gallery in Esperance inspired him to open his first gallery in Dunsborough in the early 2000’s. As his popularity grew so did recognition from his peers. The recipient of numerous awards during his career, in 2011, the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) awarded him both the Western Australian and the Australian Professional Landscape Photographer of The Year. In 2014, he was again 28 ART | GALLERY SHOWCASE

awarded the Western Australian Professional Landscape Photographer of The Year, and, in the same year, he won the inaugural International Landscape Photographer of The Year competition. Never one to rest on his laurels, Christian is always on the lookout for unique subject matter and new areas of photography to explore. His latest foray into the world of aerial industrial photography has revealed a captivating yet dark side to environmental destruction, images that evoke conflicting emotions and shock over the destruction of our natural landscapes. A passionate advocate for protecting the natural world we live in, Christian is a vocal supporter for sustainability and action on climate change from a grass-roots level. He lives with his family in Dunsborough and, in addition to running his two galleries, he regularly teaches online and in workshops both across Australia and around the world. Visit his galleries at Shop 4, 27 Dunn Bay Road, Dunsborough, and at 9 Smart Street, Mandurah, or go online at www.christianfletcher.com.au

Timeless handcrafted designs

CREATED USING TRADITIONAL techniques handed down through generations, the Bellini collection of moulded picture frames has long been seen as the industry benchmark for others to aspire to. Handmade in Italy, it encompasses traditional styles from stately grandeur through to a suite of sophisticated contemporary designs, famously featuring four integral elements; design, style, colour and finish. Representing the pinnacle in picture frame design, the frames are manufactured using the highest quality purpose-grown plantation timber. Its craftsmen, many of whom are third and fourth generation artisans, employ techniques unchanged for centuries. Individually sculptured and hand-finished, the result is a product of the utmost quality and beauty. A tribute to the fine art of framing, Bellini believes that the aesthetic potential of the mouldings offers an immediate and compelling appeal to the discerning buyer, drawing 30 ART

inspiration, just like any collection of great art, from numerous sources. The embodiment of luxury and opulence, these mouldings possess complex textures that add further dimensions of intrigue, which enhance the overall visual appeal. With a glowing reputation for its high-quality work and use of the very latest framing techniques, Terrace Art Framers, Mandurah, based inside the Christian Fletcher Gallery, is delighted to announce its appointment as a Bellini distributor. Adding a further layer to its already impressive and highly-skilled services, these exquisite frames can be viewed along with the already extensive collection of designs in its Smart Street Mall gallery. Visit the Gallery at 9 Smart Street, Mandurah or call 9581 5620 for further information.

WINTER WARMERS Feminine colours, soft fabrics and the essential statement piece The latest fashion trends from North of the River’s resident fashion expert. Winter has arrived and now is the time to envelop ourselves in warm knits, experiment with a new colour palette or select our hero piece of the season. Will it be a new coat? A metallic skirt? A treat in velvet? Over the knee boots? Let’s start with comfort: knitwear. Soft woollen blends, cashmere and mohair in oversized cuts and layered with skinny pieces underneath are what winter dressing for comfort is all about. Or

flouncy-sleeved blouses and longsleeved dresses. The gentle pinks and blushes are fabulous for any winter item but consider investing in a coat in one of those colours for that hero piece with long lines and in a wrap or slouchy-style. It will see you through many more winters to come. Or experiment with a metallic skirt – micro-pleated, pencil or cut on the bias with amazing swish appeal – for those that didn’t pick one up last season, here’s your chance. And now for velvet. It feels indulgent and most definitely has the wow factor. For pants, they have to be wide legged to allow this fabulous fabric to catch the light and shimmer as you move. But there are other options: velvet track pants with a silk camisole, a hoodie or even a slip dress – yes, slip dresses are still a hot topic in fashion – they made their comeback some time ago now.

Add a tee underneath or a coat over the shoulders. Winter wouldn’t be winter without boots, especially ankle boots. But for a statement, go for over the knee boots. They pop up every season and never fail to create drama, power and super long legs. A slouchy oversized knit would pair beautifully as would a winter floral or paisley dress.

... a soft and feminine palatte underpinned by navy for wardrobe staples ... try a figure-hugging, soft fine knit for the on-trend off-the-shoulder look with options for peek-a-boo shoulder cut-outs or an asymmetric design. Add a midi skirt, tapered or skinny pants. Off-the- shoulder, oversized slouchy pieces look great too especially when layered over a fine knit and paired with skinny jeans. Dusty pinks, blush and burgundy will be our winter go-to colours for key pieces. It’s a soft and feminine palette underpinned by navy for wardrobe staples and black patent or velvet for bags and shoes. Floral prints with dark backgrounds in black and navy are perfect for 32 STYLE

The business was originally founded in Rome by Adriano and Rita Scagnetti and since relocating to Australia, the couple’s two sons, Vairo and Tayron, have both been following in the footsteps of their parents in the jewellery trade. Vairo is a certified designer within the Gemmological Association of Australia whereas brother Tayron has become one of Australia’s most successful jewellers through his association with WorldSkills, the nation’s leading event for showcasing trades and skills through regional and national competitions. In 2013, Tayron won the gold medal for jewellery manufacturing at WorldSkills Australia and was selected to represent his country in the world event held later that year in Germany. He then undertook a period of extensive training alongside a number of notable 34 STYLE

industry mentors in the lead-up to the international competition in Leipzig which attracted 16 jewellery manufacturing entrants. All entrants were required to manufacture specific components each day for three days during the competition before being asked to assemble the pieces into a finished piece on day four. The result was a silver medal for Tayron and significant publicity for both himself and the family business. An impressive performance for someone who only started tinkering with jewellery as a young teenager and didn’t get serious about his craft until aged sixteen. With a particular interest in creating one-off rings and working with platinum, Tayron describes his style as a mix of classic and modern influences. THE KITCHEN I n n o vat i o n t o t h e f o r e

Kitchens are becoming larger and more tech-focused. Despite recent trends to bring back the traditional formal dining room, today’s homeowners want more space and more of the latest technological innovations than ever in their kitchens.

ďƒ¨

It’s a social thing. We all want to spend time together in the kitchen and not just during mealtimes. So for a living space such as the kitchen, a space that gets plenty of use during the day, there is an increasing number of functional demands required to satisfy the whole family. This is where innovative technology can help us to get the most out of this room. Whether it’s a phone, a tablet or a laptop, devices have become integral to a modern family’s everyday life. Having an area designated for chargers and USB ports is, therefore, essential for any kitchen design. These can be integrated into the worktop, hidden in a drawer or a butler’s pantry, or within a separate study or work nook set up against a window, to give a relaxed café-style look to the room. Take technology a step further and download the latest apps for the kitchen. Apps are now available that can view the contents of a fridge to check which ingredients are required for dinner or the school lunch box. Apps can also help in deciding the best programme for a load of washing, can switch on and pre-heat the oven before the homeowner arrives home and also inform when the roast has reached the correct 44 HOME

temperature for serving. Double ovens are being replaced by steam ovens and convection ovens for baking and roasting. Today’s ovens produce better and fresher results than a microwave and although microwaves still play a part in the kitchen, typically these are no longer housed within the usual oven stack, instead they are now placed under the worktop alongside drawers. Fridges, too, are undergoing innovative changes. Instead of one large unit, it now makes sense to have separate refrigerator drawers as part of the kitchen’s streamlined cabinetry - situated where they are most needed. The freezer, for example, which is not accessed as often as other parts of the fridge, can be placed away from the main working hub of the kitchen, thereby freeing up more workspace. Clean lines have been popular in kitchens for some time, and removing small appliances from worktops is an easy way to achieve this look. More and more kitchens are being designed so that appliances can be stowed within cabinetry or in a butler’s pantry. A recent

innovation in homes is to install a tap that produces instant boiling water on demand, which gets rid of the need to find space for the kettle. Taking this streamlined idea to a new level are the latest kitchen worktops that look like beautiful ceramic entertaining spaces yet hide an induction hob within. These enable the preparation, cooking and eating of dinner to be done all within the one space. Imagine being able to switch mood enhancing lights on and off, turn on a tap or open a door just by moving a hand. It seems farfetched but it’s easily achievable with today’s technology. As is using voice commands to preheat an oven or switch off an appliance. Of course, new innovations often come at a price but with the amount of living we all do in the kitchen these days, it makes sense to invest in technology and enjoy the lifestyle it brings.

WINTER WARMTH

W

I n s ta l l i n g a f i r e p i t

ith the colder weather here, for most homeowners it’s time to abandon the alfresco area to spend evenings inside in the warmth. However, the installation of a fire pit, a recent trend in outdoor living, is enabling an increasing number of people to extend the use of their backyard through the cooler months. Put simply, a fire pit is a small enclosed area that contains an open fire. Available for purchase directly from the local homeware store, fire pits can also be created from scratch or landscape professionals can custom-design and build a more permanent feature. With plenty of looks to choose from, the design of the fire pit should be mainly determined by its intended purpose and, of course, the available budget. Think about whether or not seating is required, the proportions of the backyard and if materials need to complement existing themes in the garden or house. Pits can be made from glass, iron, copper, brick 48 HOME

or stone and can burn different fuels, such as wood, charcoal, propane gas or gel, with wood and gas being the most popular. The wonderful aroma of a woodburning fire pit is perfect for that great outdoors camping feel whilst also providing an outdoor cooking option. Propane gas pits provide an unusual bluish flame and, with the supply of fuel easily controllable, can be quite large in size. They create amazing focal points with the use of non-flammable decorative materials in the pit itself, such as coloured glass or pebbles. Whatever design of fire pit is chosen, it is important to make sure that it is set up and used safely. For example, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and contact the local shire to find out about any restrictions that may apply, such as set-backs from boundaries that can impact on the location of the pit. Also, ensure the fire pit is set up on a fire-resistant material, such as concrete, gravel or brick. Once all the safety issues are taken care of, just sit back, relax and enjoy the warm and welcoming wintery outdoors.

sborne Park-based Mataka Stone is one of Western Australia’s leading suppliers of dry stone wall cladding and natural stone pavers. Supplying Perth and greater WA, the business works primarily with travertine pavers, a highly durable stone that was extremely popular in the heyday of the Roman Empire. Operating for over fifteen years, the business is run by founder Gary Neylan, who stumbled upon stone manufacturing in Malaysia while on a surfing holiday in 2001. The initial inception of the business proved to be anything but conventional as Gary explains. “During my surfing holiday, I decided to look at a map of Malaysia and I caught a bus to some stone quarries. After speaking to the factory owners, I negotiated a price and began importing containers of the local marble into the Sydney auctions. Next, after a chance meeting with an Iranian stone importer, I swapped my attention to concentrating on importing travertine from Iran into my hometown, Perth,” says Gary. “My growing business then led me to Southern China to look at the feasibility of manufacturing stone baths and basins. There, I met a lady who became my interpreter and we travelled to the outer areas of Beijing to buy some wall cladding. However, two days later, she ran away with her boyfriend, leaving me stranded in a hotel. Unfortunately, no-one spoke English in the hotel or the local area so, very quickly, I had to learn how to order food and beer. I also had problems getting the locals to understand me in the town’s launderette, which was not helped by my attempts at explaining myself with various hand movements. I think they thought I was insane! This situation went on for another four days before I was rescued by a guy who spoke no English. He just handed a mobile phone to me with a lady on the other end, who said, in perfect English, that she would meet me there in a couple of hours. I then ended up working with her company for many years!” “These days, things are certainly less complicated with my suppliers as I use a number of respected companies from Italy, Iran, Turkey and China.” Often referred to as travertine limestone or travertine marble, travertine is technically neither. A terrestrial sedimentary rock from Italy, travertine has been used in construction since Ancient Roman times and is responsible for some of the world’s most historical buildings. Both durable and long lasting, it is easy to repair and keep clean and doesn’t absorb heat, making it an ideal choice for outdoor paving, indoor flooring and pool areas. It’s available in a variety of different colours, including white, cream, grey or coral red.

ith the average person requiring eight hours’ sleep a night, it’s a well-known fact that we spend approximately one third of our lives in bed. So why compromise on the quality or comfort of the bed and the mattress we sleep on? Operating in Perth for over 30 years, European Bedding is a supplier of both high-quality, ethicallysound, adjustable beds and market-leading natural latex mattresses. The business was started in 1986 by Ronda Rohrlach and has recently been taken over by Ronan Kelly, having been previously run by his fatherin-law, Art de Boer. The position of each bed can be fine-tuned at the touch of a button and double beds even come with separate controls to allow individual settings; ideal for reading, for viewing a tablet or for watching TV. Land Rover Discovery

All new SUV gets highly impressive makeover

T

wenty-seven years since the release of the Series 1 in the UK, the Land Rover Discovery remains one of the world’s most recognisable SUVs. And, almost 3 decades on, with over a million units sold worldwide, our love affair with the ‘Disco’, seems to show no sign of abating with the release of the fifth generation model. Part of the appeal of the Land Rover Discovery has always been the fact that you kind of always know what you get with a Discovery. Its look hasn’t really changed that much since the late 80’s and although subsequent models have introduced plenty of technology over the years, it is a car that often appeals to the traditionalist. However, the all-new Discovery seems to be making a bold and concerted effort to shake off that slightly conservative tag. Firstly, it’s a car that looks significantly different to the outgoing model. Shedding its more rugged, boxy-style lines, its new-found curves and contemporary profile have obviously taken its design cues from the Discovery Sport but at the same time 56 MOTORING

lifted the whole profile of the car. It’s still unmistakeably a Discovery but a huge departure from its predecessor. Inside, the Discovery has stepped up another gear with a noticeable upgrade to its materials and finish. Indeed, with its sumptuous cabin and interior ambience, one could be mistaken for thinking that it was in fact the inside of a class-leading Range Rover. With versatile space for seven full-sized adults, the Discovery’s seating can also be configured from a smartphone, using worldfirst remote Intelligent Seat Fold technology. All models also come with an InControl media screen that can be used for navigation, media playback and apps. Powered by a selection of Jaguar Land Rover’s highly efficient diesel engines, the introduction of the brand’s award-winning Ingenium diesel power plants to the new Discovery, paired with a smooth-shifting eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox, has significantly improved both performance and emission levels. The 132kW 2.0L Ingenium Td4 diesel is the most fuelefficient Discovery to date with CO² emissions of 163g/ km and a fuel economy of 6.3L per 100km. Providing

430Nm of torque, to deliver the Discovery’s customary towing power, the Td4 powers from 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds. A high powered Sd4 version of the engine with 177kW and 500Nm of torque is also available for those looking for that extra bit of performance. Reaching 100km/h from a standing start in just 8.3 seconds, the car is still capable of achieving an economy rating of 6.5L per 100km. The new Discovery is also available with a powerful 190kW 3.0L V6 diesel, badged as the Td6. This single-turbo engine propels the car from 0-100km/h in a mightily impressive 8.1 seconds while still achieving CO² emissions of 189g/km and fuel economy of 7.2L per 100km. In keeping with the rest of the all-new Discovery’s striking upgrades, the very latest driver technologies all feature on the latest model. Terrain Response technology and, following its introduction on the Range Rover Evoque, All-Terrain Progress Control technology both come as standard. Advanced Tow Assist, a feature that takes the stress out of reversing by allowing the driver to guide a trailer, horsebox or

caravan into position without using the steering wheel, and Rear Height Adjust, which allows the driver to lower and raise the height of the rear of the vehicle to make hitching a trailer simpler, are other clever touches.

“... one of the world’s most recognisable SUVs ...” Incredibly practical, super spacious and equally at home whether on or off-road, the all new Discovery offers a compelling package. Land Rover is onto an absolute winner here.

Urbane Projects

This 1920’s built cottage, which originally included a sleep out, was completely renovated to include four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a gym, a new kitchen, living area and 3-car undercroft garage. Strict design guidelines were enforced by the local council, which required the Federation architecture to be maintained without an enclosed garage. Excavation was, therefore, carried out for an undercroft garage to the right of the house that required complex civil works. The sinking of the garage not only met the council’s requirements but also allowed for a master suite to be extended across in the original federation style to essentially double the frontage. This, in turn, allowed for the new contemporary architecture, comprising of the kitchen, living area, gym and alfresco, to be hidden from the street. The stunning end result of the 58 PROPERTY | LUXURY HOMES

extension uses elements that both mirror and contrast the original home. The attention to detail didn’t stop with just the bricks and mortar. Throughout the interior of the home, a design team was given free rein to use custom cabinetry to create beautiful elements with utmost practicality. Large commercial-size sliding doors were installed to the north-facing side of the home, allowing natural light to fill the space while connecting the living areas to the outdoors. The monochromatic colour palette was paired with natural materials to provide a backdrop of pattern and texture.

Perry Lakes Estate Daniel Cassettai Design

This stylish, contemporary Daniel Cassettai Design home is positioned on an east-facing block within the sought-after Perry Lakes Estate, Floreat. The brief was to create a fully-functional family home with a modern, edgy design and high-quality fit-out. Requirements included a formal separate living area that could be used as a library, a games room and cellar, a master bedroom with ensuite and dressing room, a guest bedroom and two secondary bedrooms with kids’ retreat and study area. Lifestyle and function were the key with the aim to create an open feel that still managed to maintain a clear separation between the living spaces. The two-storey landmark design features a contrast of materials and textures to bring warmth and detail into the home. Using sustainable building principles, there is also a strong connection with nature. Being a relatively small block in a new development, a conscious effort was made to create a design that alleviated the feeling of being surrounded by masonry. A large living and void area connects the indoor and outdoor spaces and a transition from the internal living spaces to the outside was created not only at eye level but also with the sky and surrounding trees through large north and south facing windows and voids. The ground level of the home includes a library, kitchen, living and dining area with full height glazing on the southern side of the home maximising natural light in the living areas. Glazed walls on the northern side of the home enable exposure in the winter. The sloping block navigated via a series of steps over several levels and featuring rooms with a slight rise in their front elevation has enabled an undercroft games room to be created incorporating a window and wine cellar. A double garage also opens to a utility drop-off zone, a perfect area for children to hang schoolbags and sporting equipment. Upstairs, the master suite, one of four bedrooms, includes an ensuite and dressing room disguised behind timber-clad walls, which also double as the headboard for the bed. D O I N E E D A W I L L?

I

B y r ay m o n d ta n t can’t be taken with you but what you leave behind may inflict conflict and heartache on the ones you love. The saying goes that there is nothing more certain in life than death and taxes and none of us, of course, know when our time will be up. When Steve Irwin died, the number of queries on estate planning rose substantially at my firm. Abraham Lincoln, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, John Denver and Pablo Picasso are just some of the celebrities who died without wills. Can you imagine the fight over these estates? If there is no will or no valid will in place, legal issues may arise for the beneficiaries. If you die without a will, all money and possessions (the estate) will be distributed according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the laws of intestacy and, in many cases, these laws distribute an estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results. Anyone whose circumstances have changed, through marriage, the birth of children, divorce, remarriage or the death of a close relative, should make a new will. Once married, any previous will made is generally revoked. So what should you do? Should you rush in to see a lawyer and get one done immediately? No, first, it’s important to consider the following questions. Who will be my trustee? This is a person trusted to manage the estate. He or she will be able to sell properties and deal with your money. The trustee should be financially savvy and trustworthy. Who will look after my children?

also tax saving consequences. Here are our ten good reasons as to why everyone should have a will:1. A will lessens the pain felt by loved ones at the most difficult time. 2. The guardianship of young children who survive can be made known instead of having relatives argue as to who takes care of them. 3. A will prevents bitter family battles. This is especially important if there has been a second marriage. Having one family fight over the assets is bad enough. Can you imagine two families squabbling? 4. A will simplifies the legal process. The process of unfreezing the deceased’s estate can be complicated and costly. 5. A will should name who gets the estate’s assets. If beneficiaries are not named, the law has a fixed formula for distribution of assets. That formula may not be as per your intentions. 6. A will prevents confusion. Let your family know what your wishes are. Do you wish to be cremated and have your ashes scattered to the four corners of the wind? 7. A will helps the family business. Upon death, all assets of the deceased are frozen. The business may have a vacuum in management that ultimately leads to the business operating at a loss and, ultimately, financial hardship for the family. 8. A will minimises the legal costs of settling the deceased’s estate.

Who do I leave my properties to? Where do these assets go? How do I distribute them? Does that son who never visits me get anything?

9. A will should eliminate the cost for an administrator’s bond. A bond is sometimes required by the courts before they will allow a deceased estate to be dealt with.

Do I use a testamentary trust will? This is a specialised will that has added protection for the beneficiaries and

10. A will allows the chance to explain to children why the estate was apportioned in that way.

Estate Planning To cut a long story short… We acted for a mother whose son had died in a car accident. The driver of the car was the son’s girlfriend. No-one knew how long the son and this girlfriend had been dating or whether they were in a de-facto relationship. The son did not have a will and left properties jointly owned with his mother in both of their names. Immediately after the funeral, the girlfriend claimed she was in a de-facto relationship with the son. Under the Administration Act 1903, a de-facto partner is entitled to a substantial portion of the estate. Can you imagine the angst of the mother in having to deal with the girlfriend’s claim? The mother’s words to me were, “She killed my son, and now she is coming after our properties!” The problem here was that there was no will and there was no way anyone could ascertain whether the girlfriend could prove the de-facto relationship was genuine. The mother had to swallow a bitter pill and settle the matter out of court. Lesson to be taken: Make sure you have a will.

Protect your hard earned wealth for your loved ones and get peace of mind Whether you want to make a simple will, an Enduring Power of Attorney or are just worried the tax man may attack your estate, we will tailor make a solution for your circumstances and objectives. S T E P S T H AT W I L L CHANGE YOUR LIFE! WE ALL WANT TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHIER AND FITTER LIFESTYLE and if you are serious about making 2017 the year you reach your health and fitness goals, try following these simple ten steps below.

1

Follow a lifetime nutritional plan

2

E at n o r m a l e v e r y d ay f o o d s

3

E at n at u r a l f o o d s e v e r y d ay

4

D r i n k at l e a s t 2 5 0 m l o f w at e r p e r 1 0 k g o f b o d y w e i g h t p e r d ay

Establish an easy to follow, sustainable nutritional plan that can be maintained for the rest of your life. Short term diets will only provide short term results. Eat foods that are easy to obtain, easy to prepare and foods that you and your family currently enjoy eating. Aim for foods that provide good nutrition, varying foods to minimise any deficiencies. Food consumed from fresh and natural sources will provide optimal nutrition value, contain less calories, preservatives and additives and in the long run be 100 per cent better for you.

Carry a bottle of water around all day and measure how much water you are consuming. Buy a water filter jug for the home or invest in a water filter for your tap to ensure top quality water, free of chlorine and other impurities. Increase the intake of water for more active days.

5

E at f i v e o r s i x m e a l s e a c h d ay

When calorie intake is lowered, the body’s metabolism naturally slows down. To ensure that it doesn’t slow too much, eat five to six small, low-fat meals every day. Eat three meals that are made up of carbohydrates, protein and fat and two to three small, protein only meals.

6

Plan and prepare meals

By planning and preparing meals for the week it’s possible to know exactly what you are consuming while saving both time and money.

84 HEALTH & BEAUTY

7

Ensure you never feel hungry

8

C o n s u m e at l e a s t 2 0 c a l o r i e s p e r k i l o o f b o d y w e i g h t p e r d ay

9

Ta p e r o f f c a r b o h y d r at e i n ta k e d u r i n g t h e d ay

Avoid starving yourself. This will only increase the fat stored in the body and can lead to binge eating. If you are thinking of food too often this could be due to a low blood sugar level, dehydration, a nutrient deficiency or simply because you haven’t eaten enough.

This calorie measurement is found to be the absolute minimum calorie intake to achieve weight-loss without causing nutritional deficiencies. This measurement ensures energy levels remain high and that the metabolism doesn’t slow too much. Note, this is the minimum. If active, increase the calorie intake so that the body has enough energy to function correctly.

Try to eat your largest meal at the start of the day when your body needs the energy most. As the day progresses, decrease the size of the portions and the amount of carbohydrates consumed.

10

M o d e r at e a l c o h o l consumption

Alcohol is a poison to the body that gets metabolised quicker and takes priority over other macro nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Consuming an intake greater than 1 to 3 glasses a week will limit weight loss results and increase the storage of fat in cells.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G HIDDEN SUGAR IN FOODS SO CALLED HEALTHY FOODS MAY NOT ALWAYS be what they seem. Here are ten popular foods that often

contain large amounts of hidden sugar:-

1 2

FRUIT JUICES

They might seem healthy but some fruit juices can contain the equivalent of ten teaspoons of sugar!

T O M AT O S A U C E

Sugar is often added to tomato-based products to counter acidity. Research has shown that up to one third of the contents of a bottle of sauce can be sugar.

3 4

PEANUT BUTTER

Tastes great but it’s full of added sugar. Read the label and compare brands.

SALAD DRESSINGS

Low-fat dressings are often guilty of replacing fat with extra sugar and salt to improve the taste.

A P I N C H O F S A LT THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION

regularly advises consumers to reduce salt intake to less than 5g per adult per day. In Australia, surveys indicate consumption is generally double this. Also known as sodium chloride, salt is often listed on food labels as sodium, which is not the same. To calculate the salt content of a particular food, multiply the sodium figure by two and a half times. Therefore, a food with a sodium content of 1.2g 86 HEALTH & BEAUTY

will contain about 3g of salt. To find out whether any particular food is high in salt, simply study the figure per 100g. High is more than 1.5 g per 100g, low is around 0.3g per 100g. Salt is an ingredient found in most forms of food, particularly processed and pre-packaged meals, cured and smoked meats, biscuits, pizza, breakfast cereals and ready-made sandwiches. Reduce salt intake by removing your salt cellar and, instead, season food

5

DRIED FRUIT

Often containing high amounts of sugar, the problem here is compounded by the fact that it’s easier to eat a greater amount of dried fruit then normal fruit.

6 7 8 9 10

YOGHURT

Flavoured versions, in particular, will contain added sugar as will many low and non-fat brands.

BREAKFAST CEREALS

Notorious for their sugar content! Again, read the labels and compare brands.

H E A LT H B A R S

Avoid snacking on these! Many contain the equivalent of up to three teaspoons of sugar per 30g bar.

C A N N E D V E G E TA B L E S

These often contain added sugar to help preserve them for longer. Avoid and buy fresh.

CANNED SOUP

Again, as with canned vegetables, sugar can be used to extend the shelf-life of the product.

with a variety of herbs and spices, pepper, mustard powder and chillies. Use lime and lemon juice for marinades and add wine to casseroles and risottos. In moderation, of course! Your taste buds and blood pressure will thank you! HEALTH & BEAUTY 87

oused in the historic Princess May Building in central Fremantle, home to Princess May Girls’ School until 1956, Fremantle Education Centre is a notfor-profit organisation established by the Commonwealth Government in 1974 in response to the 1973 Karmel Report. The report recommended the setting up of a number of national education centres to improve the quality of teaching in schooling and general skills training development for the broader community. Thirty-six centres were established and FEC is one of a few remaining in operation.

88 EDUCATION

Over the years, FEC’s various courses have included education for non-English speaking people, nontraditional subjects for girls, education, life skills and personal development. There has also been a strong focus on delivering literacy programmes, studentcentered learning, alternative education for alienated youth and professional development and support for educators and schools. As time has gone on, the organisation has evolved and expanded into new areas of training. In the 1990’s,

it diversified into running a range of international training programmes as well as fulfilling Government contracts for the ‘Work for the Dole’ programme and, in 2002, it was established as a nationally recognised training provider. Seven years later in 2009, FEC won a $1.5m grant from the Federal Government to renovate the ground floor of the Princess May Building, which allowed it to significantly expand its range of services as a Registered Training Provider (RTO). It then commenced its

vocational education and training (VET) in-school training programmes, providing accredited in-job training and technical skills. This part of its business has seen significant growth particularly in recent years with 2016 seeing a growth rate of 85 per cent and 2017, 53 per cent. FEC now provides training for 70 schools in an area from Joondalup to Bunbury. In addition, the organisation provides fee-forservice accredited training for the wider community. A range of programmes, funded by the WA Department of Training and Workplace Development Future Skills Initiative, are tailored to offer qualifications to disadvantaged groups within the community, such as people from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, the unemployed and youth at risk groups. Further to that, a number of short courses are available, including basic computing, returning to work and woman in supervision. The extraordinary success of FEC has made the organisation an employer of choice, employing highly skilled staff and lecturers using the very latest teaching methods. The winner of a number of different awards with the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce in recent years, it’s all female staff now boasts 27 full and part time employees as well as almost a thousand registered students. market eating house Cooking up a storm in the south west INCLUDED IN THE 2016 Gourmet Traveller Top 10 Regional WA Restaurants and featured in the Australian Financial Review Top 500 Restaurants in Australia, Bunbury-based Market Eating House has been making quite a name for itself. Owned and operated by husband and wife team Brenton and Bec Pyke, Brenton, having grown up in Bunbury, first met Bec while part of the launch team for Anduluz Bar and Tapas, one of Perth’s first small bars. From there, Brenton was recruited to be Head Chef of the relaunch of one of George Calombaris’ (of MasterChef) restaurants, The Little Press. Whilst in Melbourne, the duo gained a wealth of knowledge and experience working with some of the industry’s leading figures, which included a time for Bec working at awardwinning chef Andrew McConnell’s Cumulus Inc. On returning to Perth, Brenton and Bec managed Habitué in North Fremantle before starting their search for their own restaurant. After looking at potential venues in Perth for over a year, the appeal of Bunbury, Brenton’s childhood home, won them over and Market Eating House opened in late 2015. “We could see a major gap in the market for the style of restaurant that we hoped to create, something that was welcoming and accessible and would allow our values and way of life to be known through our food, service and hospitality. Something with which we could deliver an experience that reminds customers of why it’s called the hospitality industry in the first place,” says Bec. During the planning process, the pair discovered that they were expecting their first child and the decision to move to Bunbury, where the pair would be closer to family, was solidified. Next there followed a busy handson renovation of a series of offices on Victoria Street to turn the existing building into a new restaurant. “Four months of blood, sweat and tears culminated in a completion date that happened to coincide with my

due date and we ended up opening the restaurant two weeks after the birth of our gorgeous baby boy,” says Bec. With a custom made charcoal grill and wood fired oven taking centre stage in the kitchen, the open plan floor space, stylish bar and rustic vibe has created a distinctive charm at Market Eating House. The focus is on sharing-style dishes, and the menu is strongly influenced by the seasons, showcasing the depth and quality of local produce. “Exploring one of the most honest relationships, that of food and fire, our dishes are prepared with the idea that the ingredients maintain their integrity and will be best enjoyed sharing style, the way we eat at home, with our closest family and friends,” says Bec. Visit Market Eating House at 9 Victoria Street, Bunbury, or call 9721 6078 to make a reservation. FOOD 91
