summer fashion The latest fashion trends from The Bunbury Life’s resident fashion expert.
The return of long hot days and balmy nights quite rightly demands an update to the wardrobe: sheer, playful, relaxed, striking...the choice is yours. Full skirts in feminine sheer fabrics are so dreamy for the hot months ahead, especially in baby pink, nude or dusky colours. For warm evenings, look out for ethereal dresses featuring sheer panels or sheer sleeves. Playsuits and blouses have billowy and voluminous sleeves this season, giving an effortless look. They suit our WA climate perfectly by giving just the right amount of weightless cover-up. Try a cocoon cut - the hottest sleeve in fashion right now. It wouldn’t be summer without floral prints on the scene. This time around, there are plenty of bold tropical prints in the form of maxi dresses, ruffle dresses, playsuits and wide-leg jumpsuits, as well as silky slimline two pieces, kimonos, swimwear and silk scarves. Making its transition from cooler months into the summer is the bustier. Be daring and wear it with a full skirt or pants or layer it on top of a sheer blouse or slip dress if you want a little less flesh shown – it will still enhance your silhouette. Metallic fabric, particularly silver, is dominating evening wear this season. There are 70’s inspired pieces, such as one-shouldered and off-the-shoulder figure hugging tops, bias-cut slip dresses and gypsy tops. Just add heels and statement earrings for a truly striking look, or, if you can’t wait until the evening for a dose of shimmer and glamour, pop on a classic white tee and sneakers along with a metallic piece for the daytime. To protect against the occasional cool breeze, look to invest in a cardigan. Don’t worry, designers have deconstructed and reincarnated this staple with embellishments and new lines so it is far from the frumpy cardie of old. Of course, bomber jackets are another option, look out for silk and mesh fabric in beautifully cool pale colours. Finally, what every girl needs for the summer: a new hat. The obvious choice for every summer season would easily be a straw hat – a boater, panama or trilby. This year, wide brimmed hats are also gaining a lot of popularity – and the bigger the brim, the better.

SUMMER GARDENING TIPS
W
ith the hot weather here, it’s time to ensure that both plants and lawn are getting the right amount of water.
• When planting, check soil moisture levels. If the soil is dry below the surface, fill the hole with water and let it drain away before planting.
• Group plants with similar water requirements. This will help concentrate efforts on the plants that really need water without over-watering others.
• Use a diluted seaweed solution to water in a new plant. Seaweed promotes plant health and the development of a strong healthy root system, which will minimise water requirements.
• Consider the microclimates in your garden – are your plants happy where they are? A windy spot can seriously impact on the water requirements of certain plants so ensure water-wise plants are positioned in the windiest spots. Place other plants in a more sheltered spot so that water is not dried up by the wind and wasted.
Finally, remind yourself about the water bills from last summer and possibly think about reducing the garden’s lawn area. Remember, the green look can also be achieved using native ground covers. These use a fraction of the water of lawns.
• Check taps, hoses and reticulation systems for leaks and repair them.

t’s inexpensive, accessible to all and has proven wide-ranging health benefits, so this summer why not get down to The Rink and give the fastgrowing sport of roller skating a go? TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE SPEEDMASTER
CLASSIC STYLING IN A MODERN AGE
A
new addition to Triumph’s burgeoning Modern Classics range, the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster exudes a classic British custom laid-back attitude with an impressive level of specification. With forward foot-pegs, swept-back bars, classic ‘nacelle’ headlight detailing and comfortable pillion capability, the new Speedmaster delivers a distinctive cruising riding style, perfect for riders looking for greater touring capability. It also features many signature touches seen on the classic Bonneville Bobber, including the minimal bodywork, classic rear ‘drum brake’ inspired hub, heritage-inspired battery box and central mudguard ridges. It might take its influences from legendary Triumphs of the past but the all new Speedmaster is very much a bike of the here and now kitted out with the very latest technologies and capable of explosive performance. Taking Triumph’s critically acclaimed 1200cc high torque parallel-twin
engine and adding the even higher torque engine tune of the Bobber, a class-leading peak torque of 106Nm at 4,000rpm is achieved. This is a huge 42% more than the 2015 Triumph Speedmaster and around 10% higher than the current Bonneville T120. Delivering the unmistakable Bonneville raw exhaust note, its twin air box with twin filter design is packaged for maximum volume. With two riding modes, Road and Rain, thanks to its new ride-by-wire throttle, other notable specifications include torque-assist clutch, a single button cruise control function, stylish clock, speedometer and LCD display and 12-litre fuel tank, perfect for those long weekend cruises. There are also three eye-catching colour options, jet black, cranberry red and fusion white with phantom black, along with a stunning metal finish, polished detailing and elegant badging. If its singular soundtrack doesn’t turn heads then its distinctive design certainly will! For further information on the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 13 Halifax Drive, or call 9721 3033.

Offset Or Redraw A look at the pros and cons BY THEO KRINOS
A
ccording to a recent survey by The Reserve Bank of Australia, balances in mortgage offset accounts and redraw facilities are at around 17 per cent of outstanding loan balances - a figure that is historically extremely high. It’s clear, with interest rates at record lows, that many of us have been building up a savings buffer by paying off more than the required minimum mortgage payment each month. However, for those looking to contribute funds to an offset or redraw account, it’s important to understand the difference between the two. Re-Draw Facility This allows a borrower to reduce the balance and interest payments on the mortgage by making higher than the minimum required payment each month or 34 PROPERTY & FINANCE
by depositing lump sums into the account. As the name suggests, these additional funds can be withdrawn later if required. Typically offered with variable interest rate loans, some lenders place limits on the size and frequency of redraws and others may charge fees to deposit and withdraw funds. This structure can suit owner-occupiers who are focused on paying down debt quickly and who don’t require regular or immediate access to the excess funds. Offset Account These accounts can also be used to reduce interest payments but unlike a re-draw facility, the money deposited does not affect the balance of the loan itself. Instead of attracting interest, the savings balance is offset daily against the home loan balance and the

interest payable is reduced accordingly. For example, a borrower with a home loan of $500,000 and offset balance of $50,000 will only pay interest on $450,000. Lenders offer both 100 per cent offset and partial offset accounts and fees may vary. Individuals, however, who maintain a low offset balance may find the savings generated are negated by fees. It seemed most of the 250 students planned to go to university. Some were intending to go straight away, while others were taking a gap year first but the overall majority indicated a desire to attend university at some stage. Interestingly enough, research shows that the reality is that just 3 to 4 out of every 10 students will actually go to university and even less will graduate. I was also interested to note that out of the 250 students that graduated from this prominent south west high school, I could count on one hand the number that were looking for a career in the finance sector. For a while now, I have been aware that very few students study accounting in high school. Not that it is a necessity to study accounting at high school to become an accountant but it is a strong indicator in someone’s desire to go into the finance profession. To date, our firm has not had a problem sourcing quality graduate accountants and we are fortunate to have a local university that offers an accounting degree. However, as an owner of an accounting firm, should I be worried about sourcing future graduate accountants if fewer are entering the profession? We often discuss this at length in our managers’ meetings and, to be honest, we don’t see the future accountants we employ travelling the same path we did. Junior accountants often started in the profession doing 36 PROPERTY & FINANCE
low level bookkeeping until they became comfortable with a profit, loss and balance sheet. They would then move onto business activity statements and income tax returns. I have written previously on the rise of cloud accounting and the effect that this will have on our industry. This low level work is now being done by computer programs with less input from accountants. In short, getting to the profit, loss and balance sheet stage is now a lot easier. So what will the new accountants of the future look like? It might have been OK to be the quiet, competent bean counter in the past, however, the future accountant will need to be more charismatic and be comfortable reviewing, interpreting and presenting financial data to clients, banks and other stakeholders. It will be the ability to interpret the numbers that will define the future accountant. RSM is a firm supporter of work experience and giving students the opportunity to work in an accounting office. If you have a son or daughter thinking of a career in accounting and want to take a ‘test drive’, we are happy to discuss this through their school. WHY BEING RESPONSIVE I S V I TA L T O S U C C E S S

BY GET YOUR APP
et’s get real. First impressions make it or break it when it comes to success in business today. And a big killer for businesses in this fastpaced digital age is the ‘back’ button. You know what we mean… you Google something, click the link in the search results, land on that website and from the first impression hit the ‘back’ button. This bounce back is occurring more regularly in our multi-screened world often because of the growing pet peeve of having to ‘pinch and zoom’ a website on a smart device.
S o w h at d o e s b e i n g r e s p o n s i v e a c t u a l ly mean?
Great question! We answer this all the time. Simply put, being responsive is about how a website responds to the size of the screen it is being viewed on. Being responsive is not just the simple fix of having a desktop version of a website and a mobile version of a website. It is much more in-depth than that. A responsive website is a smart website that has built in instructions (code) to know the optimal layout to conform to for ideal viewing pleasure. In other words… no more ‘pinch and zoom’ and less bounce back!
How do you get responsive?
This is important. Getting responsive is imperative. Updating a non-responsive website isn’t as simple as waving a magic wand and voilà the website is now responsive. There are multiple factors to be considered in the world of responsive design; text, images, menus, positioning, organisation of content etc. Getting responsive is a chance to optimise how a website is presented and to make an amazing first impression. A re-haul of the overall look and message the website is conveying can boost online presence and results. There are a few options on how to get responsive. Either take the time to research further into responsive web design, the resources are out there and you might 42 BUSINESS
enjoy the learning curve of working in a digital space, or find a local website developer who has experience and passion in creating responsive websites.
... a re-haul of the overall look and message the website is conveying can boost online presence and results ... Some real-life examples: www.LockAroundTheClock.net.au needed to get its service website responsive to its customers’ needs, especially when searching on smartphones. www.TheGoodnightNurse.com.au was looking to rebrand, to reflect its new image and to create an easy to navigate website. www.SkatesAustralia.com.au needed to refresh its identity and its ecommerce online store with social medial sales integration. www.WarehouseCafe.com.au were looking to streamline and boost reorders with a responsive website and supporting app. www.IntrinsicHealthAndWellbeing.com.au needed to reconnect with a responsive website to better represent its services and story behind it. In addition to providing plenty of content on the history of the area and great places to visit, the station also regularly meets, and tells the story behind, the various business owners, creatives and characters that make the south west of WA what it is today. Owner Barry Green recently met up with Darryl Torreaux, owner of Bartercard South West. Bartercard is a business with over 400 south west members as well as being a significant global brand with offices in nine countries. Utilising the products and services of businesses as a currency for them to trade with other members, Bartercard has a strong focus on promoting the south west as a great place to relax and holiday in.
Barry Green and Darryl Torreaux
With a number of its members in the south west active in the local tourist industry, including restaurants, cafés, hotels and retail outlets, the business has recently come up with a new initiative, Work and Play. “I’d like to think it was my concept,” says Darryl, “But it was a Head Office initiative. We’ve identified that all small business owners work very hard on their businesses and find it really difficult to get a holiday and not all of them remember what’s in their backyard.” Darryl goes onto explain that the concept is all about businesses supporting local while at the same time utilising their Bartercard currency to enjoy the wonderful lifestyle that the south west offers. After all, it is the unique local businesses that make exploring the south west of WA so appealing. “Pop in and meet a friendly face behind the counter, here in the south west, it’s normally the business owner,” says Darryl.

n 2017, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School celebrates 45 years of providing a world-class education to students right here in the south west of WA. As the first coeducational, Anglican, day and boarding school offering Primary and Secondary education, the school has remained at the forefront of educational innovation. With more than 5000 alumni, including two Rhodes Scholars, the school continues its strong tradition of providing students with a well-rounded education and a strong academic focus supported by an excellent pastoral care programme. Its mission remains to provide students with every opportunity to flourish and discover their individual talents.
Expanding student horizons
Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School continues to diversify its offerings to students across the board to equip them with the skills and attributes required to meet the challenges of a global future. The school strongly believes in a well-rounded education and, therefore, provides a number of opportunities to engage in learning outside the classroom. As the only full global member of the Round Square Association in regional Western Australia, students get to experience different cultures and embark on a vast range of student exchanges as well as study and service tours in both Primary and Secondary. These opportunities enable 50 EDUCATION
students to challenge themselves by stepping out of their comfort zone and developing important life skills.
Launching Little Grammies
The School is excited to announce the 2018 launch of Little Grammies, a 3-year-old Kindergarten programme. Little Grammies will run from the school’s Early Childhood Centre in alignment with the Early Childhood Years framework. The programme will be developed and delivered by qualified early learning educators and will provide children with a unique introduction to the world of learning.
New Entry Points
Due to strong demand, the Primary School will offer additional Year 2 and Year 4 classes in 2018. Year 4 will become a standard entry point for Middle Primary, enabling a more streamlined transition into the school and strong foundations for Secondary School. Families interested in joining the BCGS community are encouraged to visit the school for a personalised tour, which is available all throughout the year, of the bushland campus. the future is written in code BY LOUISE CLARK
C
oding? Isn’t that writing notes with numbers and symbols instead of letters? Not anymore. Coding is the new buzzword in education and it’s all about making computers do what you want them to do. It is a list of instructions that command and communicate with computers to make software, games, apps and websites, and children, as young as five, are learning how to do it. It might sound unrealistic to try to teach computer coding to such children at such a young age but other countries are, at present, way ahead of Australia in investing time, money and energy into coding. They are also giving it a high priority in their respective curriculums. For example, Estonia introduced coding to primary schools in 2012 with the UK following suite in 2014. Australia, however, only added coding to its curriculum last year. And out of 44 competing countries, Russian and Chinese students dominated in this year’s International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals – in other words, the computer programming Olympics – winning 9 out of the top 14 places. So do our young pre-primaries grasp the concepts of coding? Of course, when students start off learning about coding, it is delivered to them in an age and 52 EDUCATION
developmentally appropriate way. Students begin by taking part in directional games and then go on to build robots from Lego and programme them to move. In time, students will learn how to create new sound effects with code, educational apps and games, and even computerised systems for daily chores. We already know that teaching children skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) will significantly help them to secure employment in a highly competitive global market, well, now it’s time to add coding to the list. It will prepare our children for the jobs of the future; jobs which do not yet exist. Automation is replacing human input in employment in so many areas, such as office staff, farm workers, accountants and checkout staff. New jobs will surface for those who are able to code computers to do work that we previously did ourselves, and we need our children to be able to invent and innovate and be the ones to hold these jobs. Coding will play a key part in helping to make Australia's future workforce competitive on a global level. Louise Clark has studied and taught across all age groups in the British and Australian schooling and college systems.

he long hot summer days and nights bring with them different scents: freshly cut grass, ocean spray, delicate flowers and exotic cocktails. It’s time to consider new fragrances that reflect everything we love about this time of year, especially as warmer weather can change our skin chemistry so scents we were drawn to during the cooler months may now seem too rich and heavy. It can be an overwhelming task trying to find that new signature perfume for summer so start off by working out which kind of fragrance you are drawn to the most. A look at the famous Fragrance Wheel, created by Michael Edwards in 1983, will help to identify preferred scents. Fresh: crisp ‘green’, aquatic and citrus scents; Floral: petals and
blooms; Oriental: rich, sweet and spicy; Woody: aromatic wood and patchouli. There are a variety of families and different combinations of scents that occur within these four main groups. Then there is Fougère, the fifth main group at the centre of the fragrance wheel taking elements from all the other families but essentially covering sharp and woody aromas. Now it should be easier to zone in on which summer fragrance could be your new signature scent. New from Chanel is Gabrielle, a floral fragrance centred on four white flowers: orange blossom, ylangylang, jasmine and Grasse tuberose. It is an intriguing combination of femininity and rebelliousness. Bold, indulgent and decadent, Marc Jacobs’ Eau So Decadent is floral and fruity with amber and woody notes to add extra sensuality. Estée Lauder presents us with Modern Muse Nuit, glamourous, opulent and luxurious, this is an addictive, oriental floral fragrance. Goldea The Roman Night by Bulgari, is a modern, woody floral musk – vibrant and sensual. Fun, fruity and floral is J’Adore In Joy from Dior but it also has an unexpected saltiness to it, which adds a daring edginess. For men, summer scent selections include Givenchy with Gentlemen, a woody-floral fougère, which represents the modern day, self-assured and sensitive man. And from Mont Blanc, Emblem Absolu is an aromatic yet freshly green fragrance.

eeping our skin healthy and beautiful begins with prevention and protection, so how do we do this? It is not just about the daily application of a quality skin-care product and sunscreen or through having regular skin treatments – vital, though, these are to skin rejuvenation and skin health. Instead, to achieve healthy skin, we need to look at things in a holistic way both on the inside and the outside. We must think in terms of our whole body health and lifestyle.

Exercise & Lifestyle
Substantial health benefits are gained from regular physical activity that is aerobic in nature, in particular, strength and resistance training, which increases muscular strength, endurance, and bone density. Stress is an inevitable by-product of our way of life and can affect how quickly we age, as well as our skin and how good we feel. Getting out and about and doing some exercise, no matter how active or passive, can assist enormously with stress levels.
Diet & Nutrition
Scientists have found that our diet and how much we consume influence how long and how well we live. The correct intake of nutrients and calories has a direct influence on our skin health and ultimately our overall health and lifespan.
S u p p l e m e n tat i o n
Supplementation is important not only to provide nutritional building blocks required by the body, including our skin for optimal functioning, but also for protection against free radical attacks caused by poor diet, lifestyle and environmental pollution.

Levels of key hormones naturally decline with age, for women this is particularly noticeable in hydration levels and changing facial characteristics. The use of hormone replacement therapy where needed, whether naturally based or otherwise, not only influences skin health but is life-enhancing. Applying these evidence-based lifestyle interventions will not only make a dramatic difference to skin health but will also contribute towards a healthy, active and long life.

SNAKES AND PETS BY DR BRADEN COLLINS
T
he warmer weather is here and snakes are out and about. Although, did you know we actually see more snake bites in late spring than summer? In our experience, October to December are the worst months for seeing snake bites on dogs and cats. This is for two main reasons. Firstly, the temperatures are a bit lower and the snakes are a bit sluggish. This means they don’t get out of the way of our pets quite as quickly. Secondly, they haven’t hunted for months so their venom is extremely concentrated. This means a bite can deliver a much higher dose of venom. With all snake bites early intervention is key. Rapid treatment will make a huge difference to the speed of recovery and the amount of 56 ANIMAL HEALTH
anti-venom required. For dogs, the classic presentation is when the dog is outside and collapses suddenly. Then within a few minutes, the dog seems normal again. This a critical warning sign! A dog that behaves in this way has possibly had a lethal dose of venom. Contact a vet immediately for advice as the chances are the dog will soon start to become severely affected, possibly within a few minutes. Rapid treatment at this point may save the dog’s life and will mean less anti-venom is needed so this will also save the owner a great deal of money. For cats and some dogs, especially when a lower dose of venom is injected, we see the animal becoming progressively weaker. The classic cat presentation is what we call the “plastic cat” – the cat is so floppy it almost appears to
be made out of Plasticine. A dog that has received a lower dose of venom may look much the same, or just a bit weak and unsteady. Most pet owners don’t see the pet being bitten, and it is always almost impossible to find the bite wounds when a pet has been bitten by a snake. The tooth marks are extremely small and there is rarely any bleeding. Therefore, just because it’s not possible to find tooth marks doesn’t mean the pet hasn’t been bitten. And, high dose Vitamin C doesn’t work, so don’t waste time trying to administer this. We have a type of anti-venom in stock that covers both Tiger and Brown (Dugite) snakes so knowing the type of snake involved in the attack isn’t critical. We also recommend not trying to kill the snake to identify it as there is a risk
of being bitten yourself and critical treatment time for the animal could be lost. To minimise the chance of pets getting bitten, keep dogs on a lead while walking through bushland and grass and consider keeping cats indoors or in an enclosure. Cat
enclosures, such as those made by Katzone (www.katzone.com.au), also help protect cats from injuries from other animals.

Restaurant Review
ocean 205
THis relatively new addition to Bunbury’s eating out scene not only boasts a stunning location next to the Indian Ocean but has also recently acquired its liquor license. On a glorious spring day, The Bunbury Life paid a well overdue visit. Positioned inside Seaview Apartments on Ocean Drive, Ocean 205 is quickly building a loyal and regular following in town, and it’s not hard to see why. Its inventive menu and relaxed friendly feel go hand in hand with its pleasant surroundings. Enjoy all-day dining inside its modern restaurant and, during the warmer months, alfresco dining on its terrace. Or simply stop by for a drink and take in the views. On the day of my visit, with the weather set fair, the bi-fold doors were left open for a real ocean-side vibe. Arriving for lunch, I was warmly greeted by Head Chef Ranjan Kumar, who keenly explained the menu on offer. Providing separate Breakfast and All-Day Dining menus, the restaurant also has a number of weekly specials which, during my visit, included Chilli Mussels, a deliciously tempting Beef Pie and a classic Chicken Caesar Salad. Now fully licensed, Ocean 205 has put together an impressive wine list sourcing wine mainly from the local Geographe wine region as well as offering up its own label, an SSB and Cabernet Merlot, both sourced from the Ferguson Valley.
Tempted by the Bangers and Mash as well as the Italian Bruschetta for my entrée, in the end, I ordered the Watermelon, Feta and Basil Salad, which on a warm afternoon proved to be both a tasty and refreshing choice. However, having seen a serve of the Chicken Wings served with homemade coleslaw and fries delivered to a nearby table, that might well be my choice on another visit! There is a strong seafood theme at Ocean 205, which is to be expected with its close proximity to the ocean. Fish and Beer Battered Steak Fries, Lemon Pepper Calamari, and Surf and Turf all feature but being a huge fan of all things seafood, I had to order the Seafood Platter for the main - and I was certainly not disappointed! Laden with all manner of fishy delights, the platter included Oysters Kilpatrick, creamy Garlic Prawns, Grilled Mussels, Lemon Pepper Squid and a delicious serving of Battered fish cooked to perfection. All accompanied by a gourmet garden salad and trio of dips – wasabi mayo, sweet chilli sauce and chilli aioli. Beautifully presented, this proved to be an ideal lunchtime platter for one or although it could also easily double as a tasty sharing plate. As well as its excellent coffee and huge selection of homemade cakes, many of which are available glutenfree, Ocean 205 is also proving to be a popular spot for High Tea, available at $22 a head. In fact, with its attentive service and welcoming atmosphere, there is not much that visitors to the restaurant couldn’t want for here – this local gem has it all. Words by Mark Boden

the changing MENU of life By ANNIE MALONE there was a time, I’m talking in the 1970’s and 80’s when being vegetarian was a tad…..alternative, strange, weird, you can choose your own word. ‘Going off the rails’ is a term my older brother used to describe my peculiar bent at the time. Well, those heady days of hairy arm-pitted, braless, sarong-wearing, sun-kissed babes and salt-bleached, sun-tanned, athletic-built, board-short wearing, muesli-munching, wave-gazing cool dudes were the start of something big in the direction our country's menus were about to take. By the nineties, most menus had a least one or two dishes that appeased the aspiring vegos: Fettucine al Pesto, Risotto Balls or Gado Gado. All added to make us feel a little less alien in a land of conforming conservative carnivores. Then low and behold, the medical profession discovered the detrimental effect of high cholesterol levels and overnight any sensible carnivore was following doctors’ orders and grabbing a vego meal twice a week. It wasn’t just the health freaks that were educating themselves about food nutrition. The message that the type of food you put into your body could have an effect on your wellness began to resonate throughout the western world. Spirulina, handpicked from the unpolluted high-altitude lakes of Mexico, wheatgrass and barley greens became the powders that every person interested in their own longevity started blending into their morning juice.

The diets of ancient cultures were researched and the importance of traditional farming methods proved that folks back in the dark ages knew a thing or two about growing good tucker without the use of chemical fertilizers. Marketing gurus had a field day with key words such as unprocessed, organic, free-range, farmfresh and natural - all words that supposedly meant ‘good for you.’ Even some fast food burger joints now market grass-fed beef burgers. This was a good turn of events in my book as from then on the general public has become more engaged in where food comes from, making the connection between farmer and plate more fashionable. It gives us the ability to make a better choice as long as we read the fine print and don’t get the proverbial natural wool pulled over our eyes, so to speak, by insincere shonky marketing. Fast forward to today. Our food choices now embrace all the knowledge of the research into health and well-being. Chefs are returning to the paddocks and
veggie patches, once again embracing the art of pickling and fermenting to offer more real food to a public ready to savour and appreciate. Whether you favour the Paleo philosophy, Vegan, Vegetarian, Raw Food, or Omnivore diet, it’s all available for the eating. Any self-respecting café or restaurant worth its Australian-sourced rock salt will have free-range farm-fresh eggs on their breakfast menu, served on sourdough toast, topped with a touch of sauerkraut or a little beetroot relish to aid digestion. Of course, you would also have the choice of a shot of greens or detox juice for starters and finish off with a choice of turmeric latte or single origin macchiato. This can all be relished before heading off to the pub for a boutique brew and a grass-fed wagyu beef burger for lunch. So what I am leading up to is this. Even Natural Temptation Café, the local bastion of ethical, green food choices, established by two braless, sarong wearing, sun-kissed vego babes way back in 1989 have evolved. Our menu now offers local Margaret River Natural Smoked Bacon, proudly standing alongside our famous Vego Earth Burger and free-range rosemary-infused Chicken Burger. We absolve ourselves from any guilt. It’s just the changing menu of life. Thankyou for listening.

elcome to the latest update on the news and happendings around the Geographe wine region. The 2017 Geographe and WA Alternatives Variety Wine Show recently took place at Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre and congratulations are due to Talisman Wines, who picked up the Liquor Barons Geographe Wine of Show with its 2014 Zinfandel. A special mention also to Willow Bridge Estate, who picked up the Cospak & Capel Storage Most Successful Geographe Exhibitor Trophy. In presenting the Wine of the Show Trophy, Bruce Wallace from Boyanup Cellars summed up the growing region. “If Margaret River turning fifty this year is middle-aged, then the Geographe is the young adult demonstrating to all who come into contact with it that this is promise realised. Hero varieties are emerging that are different to the usual and growers, each in their own way, are putting their stamp on the feel of the region. There is a bit more going on here than just a region to pass through on the way south.” Donnybrook-based Oakway Estate recently got in touch fresh from winning Bronze Medals at the Geographe Wine Show for its 2016 Chardonnay and 2016 Sauvignon Blanc. Further success came at the recent Western Australian Boutique Wine Show where the winery was awarded a Gold Medal for its 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, a Silver Medal for its 2017 Vermentino and Bronze Medals for its 2017 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and 2017 Moscato Dolce. Hotel Lord Forrest Joins Best Western
Kim and Leanne Beamish
New vision for iconic Bunbury hotel takes shape
B
unbury’s famous Hotel Lord Forrest has announced it will become part of Best Western Australasia (BWA). The third West Australian hotel to join the BWA network in the last few months, it joins Best Western Plus The Ranges Karratha and Best Western The Clarence on Melville in Albany as new members of the global hotel and resorts group. Best Western now has a total of 14 properties in the state. Becoming part of BWA marks a turning point for Hotel Lord Forrest. This prominent 115-room hotel located in the heart of Bunbury’s CBD, has always been a favourite spot for guests with all hotel rooms and suites featuring panoramic views of the ocean, harbour or city. Now owners Leanne and Kim Beamish are spending $4m on a total renovation of the hotel, including a complete gut and refit of all rooms and public areas. Leanne says Best Western’s global marketing reach
72 ACCOMMODATION
and strong loyalty programme were big factors in the hotel’s decision to become a member. She says great progress has been made with the renovation and that all rooms on levels three and four have been completely transformed with new bathrooms, furnishings, bedding and technology. “They look amazing and the guest reaction has been extremely positive,” says Leanne. The rooms on level one and two will be finished by the end of 2018, while work on the public areas is almost complete. Work is also well advanced on level five. “We’re just in the process of finishing off the bar and courtyard area and will paint the hotel exterior in mid2018,” she says. “It’s the biggest renovation we’ve ever done and it will be totally finished by 2019.” To make a reservation at Hotel Lord Forrest, call 9726 5757 or go online at lordforresthotel.com.au
