It all starts in kindergarten. Little boys are naturally curious. Aquinas nurtures this into a love of learning by keeping kindergarten class to just 24 students. We believe boys learn differently from girls and design our programs to keep them active and engaged.

Ska and British Music Events
S
ka and British Music are alive and well in Perth, Western Australia! The recent success of the inaugural Ska and British Music Festival was testament to this with the all-day show at one of Perth’s most prominent music venues, The Rosemount Hotel, a complete sell-out. Martin Vogt, the founder of Ska and British Music Events and trumpet player for Perth based Ska band Little Pedro says, “Interest in our shows has been steadily increasing over the last few years and with the launch of the Ska and British Music Events Facebook page, now the go-to place to find out about Mod, Ska, Ska Punk and Punk Rock in Perth, we are confident that interest is going to just keep growing. There are a large number of British tourists and backpackers attending our events plus we get a lot of support from the local UK community, especially the scooter and football clubs that are very prominent both sides of the river.”
24 WHAT’S ON
Vogt continues, “There is a lot of nostalgia related to the music that is played and many of the people that come to the shows grew up on the style of music played and were a part of the big movement that happened in the late 60’s where kids were all trying to find their identity. Plus, it’s not just the music, but the fashion and British subcultures that you see at all of our shows.” Keen to support and promote local UK bands, Vogt and his team have invited many of them to participate in Ska and British Music Events and they are now getting interest from local businesses who see benefit in partnering with this group of bands to target the support base. Martin’s Shoe Stores retailers of Dr Martin Boots, local UK Photographer Mark Nangle, advertising guru Peter Ross and Three Rivers Brewery, producers of Rude Boy Beer, recently supported the festival and it is hoped the sponsorship and business support base will continue to grow in 2018.

LIVING WELL IN WA
Claremont Showgrounds Exhibition Centre
Sat 19 & Sun 20 May
AN INITIATIVE OF Conscious Living Co-Creations, Living Well in WA is a one-stop destination for families and people of all ages and cultures to experience the very best in sustainable health and wellness in WA. Meet inspirational local business owners and practitioners, discover quality products and services that are neither mass-produced nor profit-driven and connect with who are doing what in their communities and learn how to participate. Celebrating Perth’s Wellness Culture
Over the last 10 years, against the background of a dynamic global economy, Perth has experienced an economic, social and cultural transformation. The Australian Bureau of Statistics predicts that by 2020, Perth will surpass Brisbane to become Australia’s third most populated city; a result of migration from overseas and other parts of Australia. With this population growth, there will be a shift in lifestyle trends, contributing to WA’s vibrant and growing health, wellness and sustainability movement.
Health for the Mind
Three million Australians are dealing with anxiety or depression and every day seven take their own lives. Living Well in WA provides a safe environment where people who are experiencing challenges can discover ways to creatively overcome any difficulties or problems in obligation-free encounters with businesses and groups.
Positive Parenting
WA is a wonderful place to raise a family but in some cases social and family fragmentation can undermine the experience. However, support beyond 28 WHAT’S ON
the family is available and can encourage positive parenting. At Living Well in WA, parents can find helpful new approaches to managing difficult family issues. Exploring reasons and treatments for autism and ADHD and strategies to combat online and school bullying can be discussed with educators specialising in parenting.
Sustaining the Natural Environment
A major focus of Living Well in WA is the state’s natural environment and the event will have a number of products and services on show that are specifically developed for healthy sustainable homes and gardens.
Organic and Local
A big part of the event will be food. Healthy food chefs will demonstrate their skills and the public will have an opportunity to sample locally grown organic produce and cuisine. Whether vegan, vegetarian or allergy sensitive, visitors will be able to enjoy delicious and nutritious fare.
Natural Health
Experience educational talks and workshops from leading WA authors, health and nutrition experts and meet the experts face to face. Health issues to be covered will include anxiety, depression and stressrelated diseases, obesity, diabetes, addictions, and more. A wide range of natural therapy treatments can be sampled along with opportunities to experience mindfulness sound meditations, relaxation and yoga. Following its 2017 sell-out performances of Swan Lake, Moscow Ballet La Classique returns to Australia to present the jewel of classical ballet, Tchaikovsky’s spectacular masterpiece, The Nutcracker. This romantic tale with its blend of magic and realism brings to life the popular Tchaikovsky score and features the famous ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ and ‘The Waltz of the Flowers.’ In this delightful production of the much loved ballet, La Classique captures the imagination, the passion, the humour and the magic of Russian theatre and classical ballet.
Gloriously traditional production that captures all of the fairy-tale enchantment and beauty one could wish for. – Manawatu Standard To book, call 9550 3900 or go online at www.manpac.com.au

Take several hundred of the greatest plays of all time, pick out the death scenes, mix them together (in a cunning and clever way) and then…well, that’s a surprise! Oedipus Schmoedipus is a great big festival of shuffling-off-the-mortal-coil from Australia’s silliest and smartest theatre bunch: post. Their work is joyful and dark, stupid and smart, down-home and completely over the top. Oedipus Schmoedipus is their bid for theatre history – either to join it, or to wreck it. Fed up with white men staging the deaths of white men in plays written by white men, the white ladies from post have pirated the theatrical canon and turned over the juiciest stuff to seven hundred – that’s right, seven hundred collaborators! Death: it belongs to everyone! To book, call 9550 3900 or go online at www.manpac.com.au

d av i d g i l e s reader competition Winner IN ISSUE 4 OF SOUTH OF THE RIVER magazine we offered one very lucky reader the chance to win a $3000 voucher to put towards any original David Giles artwork. Cited by The Sunday Times as “One of Australia’s most exciting contemporary painters” and the subject of an ABC documentary, How Art Changed My Life, Giles has also featured in the World Wide Art Books publication International Contemporary Masters, and in numerous interior design and builders magazines. Giles’ work has been described by art critic Sonja Vujic as “intuitive, spontaneous and inspirational”, as “profoundly numinous and deeply meditative” and as “taking us on a journey into a complex, fascinating and evocative field of visual and poetic engagement.” Giles himself describes his work as “journeys into the limitlessness of the imagination, into the vertigo of the truly sublime.” Held in numerous collections worldwide, an original Giles painting is a timeless treasure and a mystical and wonderful addition to the interior design of any home or office. We are delighted to announce the winner of this fabulous prize as Rebecca Shellabear of Hilton. Many congratulations and we hope you get plenty of pleasure and enjoyment out of your choice of artwork. Just for the record, the answer to the question, what is the address of David Giles’ gallery, was, of course, 49B High Street, Fremantle. 38 ART | READER COMPETITION WINNER

summer fashion The latest fashion trends from South of the River’s resident fashion expert.
The return of long hot days and balmy nights quite rightly demands an update to the wardrobe: sheer, playful, relaxed, striking...the choice is yours. Full skirts in feminine sheer fabrics are so dreamy for the hot months ahead, especially in baby pink, nude or dusky colours. For warm evenings, look out for ethereal dresses featuring sheer panels or sheer sleeves. Playsuits and blouses have billowy and voluminous sleeves this season, giving an effortless look. They suit our WA climate perfectly by giving just the right amount of weightless cover-up. Try a cocoon cut - the hottest sleeve in fashion right now. It wouldn’t be summer without floral prints on the scene. This time around, there are plenty of bold tropical prints in the form of maxi dresses, ruffle dresses, playsuits and wide-leg jumpsuits, as well as silky slimline two pieces, kimonos, swimwear and silk scarves. Making its transition from cooler months into the summer is the bustier. Be daring and wear it with a full skirt or pants or layer it on top of a sheer blouse or slip dress if you want a little less flesh shown – it will still enhance your silhouette. Metallic fabric, particularly silver, is dominating evening wear this season. There are 70’s inspired pieces, such as one-shouldered and off-the-shoulder figure hugging tops, bias-cut slip dresses and gypsy tops. Just add heels and statement earrings for a truly striking look, or, if you can’t wait until the evening for a dose of shimmer and glamour, pop on a classic white tee and sneakers along with a metallic piece for the daytime. To protect against the occasional cool breeze, look to invest in a cardigan. Don’t worry, designers have deconstructed and reincarnated this staple with embellishments and new lines so it is far from the frumpy cardie of old. Of course, bomber jackets are another option, look out for silk and mesh fabric in beautifully cool pale colours. Finally, what every girl needs for the summer: a new hat. The obvious choice for every summer season would easily be a straw hat – a boater, panama or trilby. This year, wide brimmed hats are also gaining a lot of popularity – and the bigger the brim, the better.

A Blooming Summer
T
here are plenty of ways to create an attractive healthy garden for summer and most landscape designers will often recommend reducing grassed areas, optimising shady tree cover and incorporating more decking or pavers. All good advice but there’s no need to miss out on beautiful foliage and flowers especially as, with a bit of careful nurturing, many will thrive in our hot summers! So, if you are after a bit of colour in the garden this summer, start by planting up some pots. Although potted plants are notoriously difficult to keep healthy during the hot weather, there are hardy options that will survive our harsh climate. Flowering containers bring the garden closer, help to give definition and form to areas and add gorgeous vibrancy to the outside. One of the most attractive of plants able to survive the
50 HOME
harsh WA sun and lack of rainfall is the native hibiscus. It is a shrub with dark green foliage with flowers that come in a variety of different colours. Particularly striking are the mauve, deep blue and orange varieties. As with all native plants, once established, the hibiscus needs only a small amount of water. Or try one of the many bromeliads. Although they all flower at various times of the year, there is a way to trigger a mature plant into flowering at a desired time. Place the bromeliad in the shade alongside a banana skin or apple and cover the fruit and plant in plastic for around three days. The gas given off by the decaying fruit promotes flower growth. Put the plant back to its usual spot and a flower should appear within the next four months. Visually dramatic and, at the same time, well suited to pots is a strelitzia or ‘bird of paradise’. The name comes
from the resemblance of the flower and its beak-like sheath to a bird’s head. As well as not requiring much water, these plants don’t require fertiliser either. The most common type seen around gardens is the strelitzia reginae with its orange petals flung up and its blue petals joined together to form an arrow-like nectary. Birds are attracted to the nectar and, when they perch to drink it, their feet get covered with pollen, which is then spread and helps with natural plant reproduction. Also popular are the ‘butterfly bushes’ or gauras. These reliable waterwise plants do well in full sun and their butterfly-like flowers bloom in white and shades of pink. Bougainvilleas are wonderfully dramatic climbing plants and hardy enough to prosper in full sun. However, they can easily get out of control if not pruned back. Try opting for a compact version in the form of a ‘bambino bougainvillea’ as these
have spectacular flowers yet a restricted growth habit making them perfect for pots. For hanging baskets as well as pots, choose a geranium with its cottage garden appeal. Portulacas like good drainage and full sun, so are ideal for hanging baskets too. They have brilliantly coloured flowers of white, yellow, purple, pink or apricot. The added bonus of pots and baskets is that they can be moved around the garden or alfresco area, continually changing the architecture of the space. Ask at your local garden centre about new flower releases and find out what colourful options are available to add to a backyard or patio. Remember to take in all the advice about looking after these new plants and you’ll find it isn’t quite as tricky as you thought.

SUMMER GARDENING TIPS
W
ith the hot weather here, it’s time to ensure that both plants and lawn are getting the right amount of water.
• Group plants with similar water requirements. This will help concentrate efforts on the plants that really need water without over-watering others. • Consider the microclimates in your garden – are your plants happy where they are? A windy spot can seriously impact on the water requirements of certain plants so ensure water-wise plants are positioned in the windiest spots. Place other plants in a more sheltered spot so that water is not dried up by the wind and wasted.
52 HOME
• When planting, check soil moisture levels. If the soil is dry below the surface, fill the hole with water and let it drain away before planting. • Use a diluted seaweed solution to water in a new plant. Seaweed promotes plant health and the development of a strong healthy root system, which will minimise water requirements. • Check taps, hoses and reticulation systems for leaks and repair them. Finally, remind yourself about the water bills from last summer and possibly think about reducing the garden’s lawn area. Remember, the green look can also be achieved using native ground covers. These use a fraction of the water of lawns.

East Fremantle
Located in a majestic South Perth foreshore location with panoramic views of the city, this customdesigned home takes full advantage of the block’s configuration and surroundings. Featuring 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and a powder room, the home also includes a ground floor art gallery with dedicated lighting that can been seen from both the pool area and cabana. The exterior of the home combines natural stacked stone, acrylic texture coat, custom column details to the balcony areas and extensive decorative lighting to create not only a stunning visual for the owners but also for passers-by. With extensive bespoke cabinetry throughout and premium finishes such as solid timbers and veneers, lacquered doors and feature natural stone, other highlights include an open-plan kitchen with European appliances, dining area with 1.6m wide fire place and a home automation system for lighting, climate control and security.
Nestled on prime land in the Richmond Hill precinct, a dilapidated property that caught the eye of Empire Building Company’s founder and managing director Andre Malecky will soon be receiving a complete re-build. Set to unlock the full potential of the elevated hillside location, The Riverview will be an impressive three-storey residence featuring modern textures and a striking contemporary facade. With completion expected late 2019, the team had to overcome a number of challenges before construction commenced. “From a real-estate perspective, the site is centrally located to the river, ocean, sporting grounds, yacht clubs, retail shops, schools and local business and we wanted the new home to maximise the expansive breathtaking river and city views,” said Andre. “The geometric design captured our interest; however, this created some serious engineering challenges.” These challenges were overcome by creating a three-tiered strategic design with the inclusion of a four-car undercroft parking area and lift to each floor. A specifically engineered cantilever balcony also accentuates the facade offering further dimension to the overall design. “Although we have not confirmed the final colour palette, we will definitely be using a combination of stone cladding, texture coating, glass, feature timbers and panoramic double-glazed windows,” said Andre. Once completed, The Riverview will serve as Empire’s next custom display and will be available for sale as an investment while the display is open.

WAY S T O A D D VA L U E T O YO U R H O M E
... WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK!
Our home is our biggest investment and adding value doesn’t have to cost the earth. So whether you are looking to increase the value of your property or simply looking to improve your quality of life, here are 10 great, affordable ways to achieve those renovation goals.
Give the kitchen a n d b at h r o o m s a makeover The old adage that kitchens and bathrooms sell homes applies more than ever today. As the most important room in the house, a renovated kitchen is a sure fire bet for adding value to the home and renovations don’t have to break the budget. A lick of paint or new handles on existing cabinet doors can work wonders. Of course, if there is a bit more money in the pot, adding stone bench tops can be a real winner and with a variety of composite stone tops now on the market you might be surprised at how affordable some can be. In the bathroom, try applying fresh sealant around wet areas, replace old towel rails and toilet roll holders, replace old shower heads and clean grouting. Again, stone vanity tops can create a real wow factor.
Upgrade or clean flooring Attending to dirty carpets and scratched wooden flooring makes a home seem bigger, brighter and much more appealing. For carpet stains, try steam cleaning, wash and wax for laminates, and for wooden floors, sand them back and apply fresh coats of varnish. 80 PROPERTY
Paint throughout Never underestimate how much value can be added to a home with a fresh coat of paint to either the interior or exterior. A good paint job is not only relatively cheap but it’s also the easiest way to inject new life into dull, lifeless rooms. Choose neutral colours to maximise appeal and if you can’t afford a professional painter to do the whole house, employ them to paint just the entrance and living areas to maximise first impressions.
Clean from top to toe How long is it since you gave your home a really good clean? Start from the highest point and work down, cleaning all work surfaces and in particular window dressings. Take down your blinds before cleaning, send your curtains to the drycleaners and clean out cupboards. You will have to move furniture out of rooms but the results will be worth it.
Improve lighting There’s nothing worse than a dark and dingy interior and by adding either more natural light or attractive artificial lighting your home can be transformed. Think about installing a skylight or an extra window in dark areas of the home or install the latest energy
efficient LED lights to give the house a more contemporary look.
De-clutter and add space We are all guilty of hanging on to too many unnecessary items. A cluttered home is not only untidy but also appears much smaller. Have a garage sale, rent a storage unit, or start making trips to the landfill and whittle down your home’s contents to a manageable size.
Open up the home Open plan living is all the rage and today’s homes are all about larger rooms and less of them. Knocking out non-structural walls is a great value-add to make a home appear larger than it really is. You can
open up the kitchen to the living room or the lounge to the backyard relatively inexpensively. Bi-fold doors leading out from the living area to a sheltered outdoor area can also create more usable living space.
Give the front entrance a makeover First impressions can make all the difference so always ensure the front of your home is looking its best for passers-by. Sand down and varnish wooden front doors or add some paint, repair ripped flyscreens and install brand new light fittings. A shiny new house number, swish new mailbox and new plant pot or water feature will add that finishing touch.
Render the outside brickwork
If your home is starting to show its age on the outside, chances are it could be because of out-dated exposed brickwork. Rendering the brickwork to a home can be expensive, particularly on 2 storey homes where scaffolding costs come into play, but the results can be stunning. It may cost a few thousand dollars but the returns could far outweigh the costs.
can invest, a beautifully landscaped garden is a great investment. If there’s money in the budget, it may even pay to have a designer come up with a garden and planting scheme that makes the most of the layout and proportions of the house. And, while you are about it, make sure that driveways and paving around the home are regularly jet washed.
Landscape the gardens
An unkempt garden can block out light, obscure views and dramatically reduce curb appeal. As one of the lowest cost, highest return makeovers in which you PROPERTY 81
SIMPLE STEPS TO LOOK YOUNGER W I T H O U T H AV I N G A F A C E L I F T ! 2
In spite of what we hear, it’s not a necessity to go under the knife to roll back the years. By eating better, sleeping more and stopping bad habits, it’s possible to achieve exactly the same aim. Here’s how you do it.
1
BANISH BAD HABITS FOR GOOD
If you want fabulous skin, you are going to have to make a few sacrifices. Start by avoiding sunlight, smoking and excessive alcohol. Sunlight and smoking are the two most damaging factors towards ageing skin so cover up and stub them out for good. However, it is not all bad news! Some research shows that a moderate amount of alcohol, particularly red wine, can help to keep your heart healthy and stress levels low.

Eating the right foods can make a real difference to the way you look. Avoid where possible, or try and moderate, sugar, drinks containing caffeine, additives, fizzy drinks, smoked meats, barbecued food and excess dairy produce, such as butter, milk and cheese. Also, cut down on refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, white pasta and white rice plus processed salt and processed fruit juice. A list of anti-ageing foods includes shiitake mushrooms, broccoli, berries, beans, pulses, peas, oily fish, pumpkins, carrots, sweet potatoes, oats and almonds. Hyaluronic acid, often used in anti-wrinkle creams, occurs naturally in much of the above. Also, try to drink green tea.

Working out can have beauty benefits as well as being good for your health. A combination of weight training and cardiovascular exercise will boost the metabolism, increase bone density, increase flexibility and build muscles. It can help normalise blood pressure and balance hormone levels. Try doing at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise four times a week.
4
GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP
A regular night’s sleep must be a priority if you want to stay looking good. Whilst everyone has varied requirements, generally most of us need about 8 hours of good quality sleep. Lose sleep and we lose one of our most imortant anti-ageing tools!
5
REDUCE STRESS
6
CARE FOR YOUR SKIN
Stress can wreck health and play havoc with your looks. It ages faces and puts a strain and weight on bodies. Take time out to beat it. Even simple things like squeezing a stress ball, thinking of your next holiday or just having a giggle can help. Beauty does come from within but sometimes the outside can do with some help! The good news is that you don’t need a cupboard full of expensive products. Simply spend time regularly cleansing and moisturising, apply sunscreen and brush your skin before showering or taking a bath.

FACTORS FOR H E A LT H Y W E I G H T L O S S
By Kim Mitchell
eeling good about ourselves can often be associated with a bit of weight loss – yet this can be a confusing area to explore! One minute we read an article about the need to eat carbohydrates and the very next article is encouraging us to eat more protein and fats and banish the carbs. How can we make sense of a lot of well-meaning but conflicting information? How can we eat and fuel ourselves with energy all day long whilst burning fat? What can you do if you’ve tried everything to lose weight? Have you made an enormous effort to eat well and exercise regularly for little or no reward? And, how does all of the information out there relate to our own individual body’s biochemistry? Any of the following four factors may be involved when it comes to our unique healthy body journey.
1
calories
2
stress hormones
We can’t eat huge quantities and expect our body fat to co-operate. If you eat well and exercise regularly and body fat is still a problem, then the answer is probably not in the calorie department. There will be other aspects of your biochemistry that need to be addressed. The human body produces two dominant stress hormones - adrenalin and cortisol. Cortisol is our chronic stress hormone and encourages our body to store fat in case the next meal is some way off. Cortisol lays fat down around the midriff and on the back of arms. Most people’s response to fat accumulation around their tummies is to go on a diet, which means eating less food. This only confirms to your body what cortisol has driven the body to believe – that food is scarce. When we restrict food intake our metabolism slows even further. If cortisol is a contributing factor to your weight gain, going on a calorie restricted diet is not the answer. Sorting out your cortisol is and there are numerous stress busting methods that can be used to do this. 84 HEALTH & BEAUTY
3
sex hormones
4
the liver
The major sex hormones for women are estrogen and progesterone, with testosterone also playing a role. Balancing these hormones can influence whether we are storing fat or burning it. Estrogen lays down fat. Progesterone, on the other hand, is essential in accessing body fat and burning it. Reproductively, progesterone has a role, and biologically it also has many functions. It is one of our most powerful anti-anxiety agents. It is also an anti-depressant and a diuretic, which means that it allows us to excrete any excess fluid we may be carrying. It is essential for a healthy functioning libido as well as for burning body fat! Clinically, low progesterone is the most common hormonal imbalance I see every day. If estrogen is too high for the amount of progesterone being produced, body fat will be stored. It is however essential to get to the bottom of why there is either poor progesterone production or why estrogen is in excess. Some people have excellent progesterone levels but their estrogen is simply far too high to balance the progesterone. The liver plays a central role in whether estrogen levels are appropriate or far too high for body fat to be burnt. Getting this hormonal balance right can change a woman’s life. Getting on top of your hormonal balance can change your head-space as well as your body.
The liver is our second largest organ and its primary role is detoxification. The liver processes things we consume as well as things we absorb through our skin. The liver also has to detoxify substances the body naturally makes, such as cholesterol and sex hormones. It also picks up any shortfall in digestion so the liver of people suffering constipation or digestive issues will have an additional workload. Taking regular medication will also add to the liver’s workload. Sorting out liver function can change your life and lead to far more effective fat burning.
The good news is that whilst many of these imbalances are common, they are not normal and there are ways to address them - naturally. Understanding our body’s composition and cellular health, tailoring nutritional needs to our own biochemistry, improving digestive and liver health and managing stress all play a crucial role in balancing each of the factors that can be blocking weight loss. It is also important to review our thyroid health, insulin balance and any emotional issues that may also be standing in our way. A Body Composition Analysis is a comprehensive health assessment that confirms valuable information about an individual’s body composition, muscle to fat ratio, fluid distribution and cellular health and the potential impact these are having on their unique hormonal and weight balance. We use a TGA approved certified medical device that takes the guess work out of the best course of action for weight loss. To help begin your own journey to natural and
sustainable weight loss, we are offering 20 free Body Composition Analysis (valued at $80) when you book your one hour Weight Loss Consultation for $130 between December 2017 and May 2018. EFFECTIVE SUN PROTECTION
L
iving in Australia means we are more susceptible to skin cancer through sun exposure than many other places in the world. Geography dictates that we are closer to the sun and the ozone layer above us is depleted. In addition to this, we spend a lot more time outdoors. Yet despite this, almost half of all Australians have never had a professional skin check. This is an even more remarkable statistic when you consider that there is a 95% success rate of treating one of the most aggressive types of cancer found in skin, malignant melanoma, if it is detected in its early stages. A melanoma can start in healthy looking skin or in a freckle or a mole. It can grow anywhere on the body, including areas that don’t see the sun, such as under hair or under feet. It is usually of more than one colour (brown, black, red, 86 HEALTH & BEAUTY
white, light grey), whilst it’s most outstanding feature is that it looks different to any other lesion. The most common form of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. It is slow growing and can look like a round or flattened lump, a scaly area or a sore that doesn’t heal. It can be red, pale or pearly in colour and can usually be treated, again, if detection is early. Then there is squamous cell carcinoma, which accounts for approximately a third of skin cancers. So how do you protect yourself against the sun’s rays? Well, other than permanently staying indoors, wearing the right sunscreen and hat is the next best alternative. A good sunscreen protects the skin from the sun’s damaging ultra-violet (UV) rays and not just the UVB damage, which causes burning. It protects against UVA rays which penetrate deeper into the skin causing damage to the skin’s cellular DNA. This can lead

to genetic mutations, potentially leading to skin cancer. There are plenty of sunscreen options on the market but it is important to choose the good quality products. Make sure it is SPF30+, waterproof and ‘broad spectrum’, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Apply it daily at least 20 minutes before exposure to the sun and then every two hours. UVA rays are prevalent at all times of the year and can penetrate clouds and glass so it’s not just the careless times when sunscreen hasn’t been applied that lead to skin damage. Over time, every little bit of sun our body sees is contributing to the problem. So this summer, seek shade and wear sunscreen, sun protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat and wraparound sunglasses. Your skin will be glad you did.

the future is written in code BY LOUISE CLARK

oding? Isn’t that writing notes with numbers and symbols instead of letters? Not anymore. Coding is the new buzzword in education and it’s all about making computers do what you want them to do. It is a list of instructions that command and communicate with computers to make software, games, apps and websites, and children, as young as five, are learning how to do it. It might sound unrealistic to try to teach computer coding to such children at such a young age but other countries are, at present, way ahead of Australia in 88 EDUCATION
investing time, money and energy into coding. They are also giving it a high priority in their respective curriculums. For example, Estonia introduced coding to primary schools in 2012 with the UK following suite in 2014. Australia, however, only added coding to its curriculum last year. And out of 44 competing countries, Russian and Chinese students dominated in this year’s International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals – in other words, the computer programming Olympics – winning 9 out of the top 14 places.

So do our young pre-primaries grasp the concepts of coding? Of course, when students start off learning about coding, it is delivered to them in an age and developmentally appropriate way. Students begin by taking part in directional games and then go on to build robots from Lego and programme them to move. In time, students will learn how to create new sound effects with code, educational apps and games, and even computerised systems for daily chores. We already know that teaching children skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) will significantly help them to secure employment in a highly competitive global market, well, now it’s time to add coding to the list. It will prepare our children for the jobs of the future; jobs which do not yet exist. Automation is replacing human input in employment
in so many areas, such as office staff, farm workers, accountants and checkout staff. New jobs will surface for those who are able to code computers to do work that we previously did ourselves, and we need our children to be able to invent and innovate and be the ones to hold these jobs. Coding will play a key part in helping to make Australia's future workforce competitive on a global level.

Restaurant Review
Nunzio’s restaurant an iconic fremantle eatery, renowned for its traditional Italian cuisine, extensive wine list and convivial atmosphere, Nunzio’s Restaurant was originally founded by local restaurateur Nunzio Gumina, the driving force behind alfresco dining on the cappuccino strip. Now, after many years of award-winning service, the restaurant is under new ownership. A good excuse, as if we needed one, to pay a well overdue visit! Situated within a delightful, historic cottage on Essex Street, there is no doubting Nunzio’s has always oozed charm and character. It also continues to be very much a family affair. Now run by extended family members Eva and Fabio, who offered a warm welcome on my arrival, regular visitors will still be pleased to know that Nunzio himself can still be found front-of-house most nights.
Arriving for lunch, I quickly ordered a glass of the recommended 2015 Pinot Grigio Casa DeFra, an excellent dry white from the Veneto region of North East Italy, which was accompanied by some delicious homemade bread. Now for an appetiser! Sorely tempted by both the Carnarvon Scallops al Gratin and the Pork Belly served with chestnut purée, I eventually plumped for the Tiered Baked Eggplant served with buffalo mozzarella, parmesan and basil. This beautifully presented dish proved to be a wise choice with the expertly cooked eggplant blending perfectly with the Italian cheeses and pesto dressing. Next, it was time to choose a main. Was it to be one of Nunzio’s classic traditional dishes or one of its mouth-watering pasta dishes? Well, despite a number of my personal favourites, including Lamb Shank and Veal Cutlet, residing on the menu, in the end it had to be the Squid Ink Fettucine served with chilli and a fish and prawn ragù. Bursting with flavour this exquisite dish, with its fantastic homemade pasta and freshly made sauce, not only showcased the skills emanating from the kitchen but also the supreme quality of the Western Australian seafood used. Much of Nunzio’s seafood is sourced locally and the freshness and fabulous taste of the catch shone through. With its friendly, attentive service, welcoming atmosphere and historic charm, Nunzio’s has always been a popular haunt amongst locals. Consistently offering the very best in traditional Italian cuisine, it’s clear that new owners, Eva and Fabio, are continuing to uphold the lofty standards of one of Fremantle’s finest dining out experiences. It’s a must visit for all. 2016 Amphora Garnacha available at Green Door Wines
Feature Wine
2016 Amphora Garnacha green door wines
THE GEOGRAPHE WINE REGION continues to punch above its weight and this latest release is another example of some of the wonderfully creative wines currently being produced. Ferguson Valley winery Green Door Wines has recently announced the release of a new addition to its premium Amphora range, the 2016 Amphora Garnacha. The winery has been using Amphora pots to produce its premium range of wines for the last three years with the pots sourced from the McLaren Vale in South Australia. Made from clay and lined with beeswax, the pots have given great structure and complexity to the wines produced. The 2016 Amphora Garnacha is the first time Green Door Wines has released a straight Garnacha. Originally from Spain, Garnacha (or Grenache as it is otherwise known) is a vigorous varietal to grow. However, the vines at the winery are now over 20 years old and are producing intense-flavoured fruit, enabling production of the first Amphora Garnacha. The Garnacha fruit was hand-picked and de-stemmed into the amphora clay pots. Some whole bunches were added to the pots at this stage. The ferment was initiated using wild yeast. When dry, the ferment was pressed off into old oak for Malolactic fermentation and cellared for twelve months before bottling. 2016 Amphora Garnacha Tasting Notes Brilliant garnet in colour, the aromas are dark cherries, cinnamon, vanilla and star anise. There is a soft medium bodied palate, with juicy raspberries and black jelly beans, and fine chalky tannins. Available from the cellar door at $35, or online at www.greendoorwines.com.au A 20 per cent discount applies on purchases of 6 bottles or more. 94 FOOD & WINE
