Summer Fashion

Stephanie Says…

The latest fashion trends from The Busselton-Dunsborough Life’s resident fashion expert...

summer feel, such as floaty chiffon shirts, kaftans, maxi dresses and palazzo pants. Asymmetric hemlines add to the easy flowing look. If you like more structure, the peplum has held its ground since spring and there are also fluted hemlines that add a girlie edge to slimline dresses. For men, there’s a relaxed chic style that’s big this summer. It involves chinos (sandy or dark ink blue), casually rolled up to show off tanned ankles and expensive leather shoes, a thin cotton scarf around the neck and a linen or print shirt, tucked in or unbuttoned and loose. Print loose shorts work well too and add to that a straw trilby or fedora. The Olympics are still inspiring fashion with crew necks, polos and cardigans in fine knits of blue, grey and white and with flashes of tangerine, yellow or pink. Men - embrace it, the bright colours are here to stay!

Embrace the season!

From the sweetest soft pastels through to exotic jewel tones and daring neon, colour is everything this summer. And this is far from being a temporary fad! The recent European spring-summer fashion shows were positively packed full of colourful treats! Daring neon, an obvious choice for younger women, is a must-have tone this season and can be easily worn by all ages. Pick a neon nail polish or clutch, ballet flats or heels and combine with a neutral outfit to create a purposeful, uplifting statement. At the other end of the spectrum are pretty pastels. Wear them in relaxed outfits for a fresh summer look, such as a billowy chiffon shirt with shorts, or milkshake skinny pants with a loose nude singlet. Navy and white, the classic nautical stripe, is Ladakh given a colourful update this summer with at Echo Clothing accessories in turquoise, gold and sea green. The jewel inspired colours from the sea give the look a younger, more playful edge. Tuck in a striped top to wide legged pants and add towering peep toe wedges in white. And the print of the season? Well, the standout designs are bright tropical with exotic flowers and wild animals (perfect for swimwear and the essential maxi dress), the new ‘mirrored’ print effect, and floral prints. Small flowers or oversized, it’s a pictureperfect, flirty look and right on trend. Summer fashion is also about embracing the mix of prints that have been so popular in recent seasons. Take your pick from digital, multi-tone, geometric or tribal with the current eye-catching trend being to wear your print head to toe. For the less brave, go for printed pants with a neutral top. Choose items for your wardrobe that are fluid and airy to encapsulate that relaxed 10

unique jewellery, gifts and accessories

Work, weddings, washing-up. Should a shoe be relegated to just one setting??? But oh, please, NO! Take some inspiration from our own shoe-tastic Garden of Eden (well, it IS heaven here you know!), and gear up for a season of pretties that will float you through the day, to cocktail hour, and beyond ....

WHIMSICAL: Hello petals, shoes get pretty. Soften up work wear with a soft pink slingback from Gino Vaello - so Dior - then pair her with flirty wrist-candy from Spencer & Rutherford to drag your taupe 1950’s frock from retro to race-day perfection.

dunsborough 08 9759 1831 shop 3, 23-34 dunn bay road

GARDEN OF EDEN: Follow Ms Prada into the patterned trouser, and blossom into gardenparty ready, working texture and prints onto grass-friendly wedges from Minx, or Spanish platform espadrilles with floral ties from Gaimo. FRUITY: Orange, strawberry, grape and apple. Inspire your next tart bake-off with Italian leather and cane fruit-styled bags from Kontessa. Then pack a punch to win Fashions on the Field by pairing with a similar hued pump from PeepToe, Siren or Mollini. How easy.

bunbury 08 9721 4438 43a stephen street

DISCO GLAM: Shimmy into a slinky halter neck maxi and strut your style in disco worthy, strappy sandals from Kosheen in oh so now silver and gold metallics. Pair down the look into a simple black strappy sandal à la Windsor Smith and take your form fitting black dress for work to a whole other level. And remember, style isn’t occasion-specific. Never be caught unprepared ...

home & garden

A Blooming Summer There are plenty of ways to get a healthy garden for summer and most experts will often recommend reducing grassed areas, optimising shady tree cover and incorporating more decking or pavers. This is all good advice but what about the season’s colours? What a shame to have to miss out on beautiful foliage and flowers especially as, with a bit of careful nurturing, many will thrive in our hot summers! So, if you are after a bit of colour in the garden this summer, why not start by planting up some pots. Although potted plants are notoriously difficult to keep healthy during the hot weather, there are hardy options that will survive. Flowering containers bring the garden closer to you, they help to sculpt areas and they add gorgeous vibrancy to your outdoor area. One of the most attractive of plants able to survive the harsh WA sun and lack of rainfall is the native hibiscus. It is a shrub with dark green foliage and its flowers come in many colours, particularly striking are the mauve, deep blue and orange varieties. As with all native plants, once established, the hibiscus needs only a small amount of water. Or try one of the many bromeliads. Although

they all flower at various times of the year, there is a way to trigger a mature plant into flowering at your desired time. Place the bromeliad in the shade alongside a banana skin or apple and cover the fruit and plant in plastic for 3 days. The gas given off by the decaying fruit promotes flower growth. Put the plant back to its usual spot and a flower should appear within 4 months. Visually dramatic and at the same time well suited to pots is a strelitzia or ‘bird of paradise’. The name comes from the resemblance of the flower and its beak-like sheath to a bird’s head. As well as not requiring much water, these plants do not need fertiliser either. The most common type seen around gardens is the strelitzia reginae with its orange petals flung up and its blue petals joined together to form an arrow-like nectary. Birds are attracted to the nectar and, when they perch to drink it, their feet get covered with pollen. Very popular currently are the ‘butterfly bushes’ or gauras. These reliable waterwise plants do well in full sun and their butterflylike flowers bloom in white and shades of pink. Bougainvilleas are wonderfully dramatic climbing plants and hardy enough to prosper ... cont. pg 36 34

home & garden in full sun. However, they can easily get out of control if not pruned back. Try opting for a compact version, a ‘bambino bougainvillea’, as these have spectacular flowers yet a restricted growth habit so are perfect for pots. For hanging baskets as well as pots, choose a geranium with its cottage garden appeal. Portulacas like good drainage and full sun so are ideal for hanging baskets too. They have brilliantly coloured flowers of white, yellow, purple, pink or apricot.

The added bonus of pots and baskets is that they can be moved around the garden or alfresco area, continually changing the architecture of the space. Ask at your local garden centre about new flower releases and find out what colourful options you can add to your backyard or patio. Remember to take in all the advice about looking after your new plants – you’ll find it isn’t as tricky as you thought.

Mercedes CLS

The curvaceous coupé with saloon practicality dynamic sweeping roof, Mercedes had not only created a design icon but also achieved impressive sales. And, as you would expect from a car that had been responsible for creating a marketplace revolution of sorts, it was soon clear that other luxury brands such as Audi with the A7 and Porsche with the Panamera also wanted a slice of the action. So in response, 6 years on and some 170,000 cars later, Mercedes released the equally

Back in 2004, the Mercedes CLS created quite a stir. Slotting in between the E-Class and the S-Class, but taking much of its cue from the former, the CLS marked the brand’s return to the executive coupé market after the demise of the E-Class coupé some ten tears earlier. Heralded by Mercedes as the ‘the first four-door coupé’, this sleek and stylish trendsetter set tongues wagging with its mix of four-door versatility and thrilling coupé-style looks. Who said that you couldn’t have performance, eyecatching lines and practicality in the same package? With its long bonnet and

stunning CLS Mk11. With 4 engine options available plus an AMG version, the full Mk11 range first became available in Australia in mid-2011. From the front, the all new CLS took much of its inspiration from the top of the range SLS AMG sporting an aggressive nose, more prominent flared wheel arches and a beautifully contoured bonnet. In addition, the new CLS gained full LED headlamps, electromechanical power steering system and a raft of new technologies including Active Blind and Lane Assist. Currently, as then, the range consists of two diesel and three petrol engine options. The CLS250 CDI diesel equipped with a state-ofthe-art common rail direct injection system and two stage turbo generates 150Kw and a maximum torque of 500Nm whilst the 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY generates 195kW and 620Nm of torque. Fuel

consumption for the diesel options is an impressive 5.2 litres and 6.2 litres per 100km (combined). Kicking off the petrol range is the V6 350 BlueEFFICIENCY. Developed using lightweight materials to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions, the CLS 350 generates 225kW and 370Nm of torque. Next up is the V8 500 BlueEFFICIENCY developing 300kW and 600Nm of torque and finally, last but not least, the astonishing CLS 63 AMG fitted with the new AMG 5.5 litre V8 biturbo engine which achieves a mighty 386kW and 700Nm of torque. Never one to rest on its laurels, exciting news for 2012 is that Mercedes is also launching the CLS Shooting Brake into Australia. Premiered at the Beijing Motor Show in April, the Shooting Brake, based on the former E-Class estate, offers added hatchback practicality with the same range of diesel and petrol variants as the CLS. Expect cars to be available from around November. For further information on the Mercedes-Benz CLS range, contact Coastal Automotive Centre, Bunbury on 9721 8199.

Toyota Corolla All-new hatchback version hits the streets!

It’s not every day that the world’s largest car manufacturer releases an all-new version of the world’s best-selling car, so, not unsurprisingly, the all-new Toyota Corolla hatchback is big news. Having sold close to 40 million units worldwide since its inception in 1966, the Corolla has never been a car that has stood still for long, and with its eleventh generation of the marque, Toyota has come up with an exciting, sleek and sporty look. First viewed in Australia at the Sydney Motor Show in October, this dynamic, hot hatch is pitched directly at the Hyundai i30 and the Mazda 3, and for the first time takes much of

its inspiration from European styling and European buying preferences. With its deep-v grille design and sharp new headlights and potent mix of edgier styling, smooth flowing surfaces and sweeping exterior lines, the car has an aura of poise and purpose. Its low, sloping bonnet, longer windscreen and reduced overall height perfectly accentuate the hatch’s sleeker, more streamlined appearance. Initially available in Australia with a revised version of the 1.8 litre engine used in the previous model, this 4-cyclinder power plant

develops increased power at 103kW. And, when fitted with the new seven-speed MultiDrive S-CVT transmission system, fuel consumption and emissions are lowered by more than 10 per cent to just 6.6 litres/100km and 152g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle. Inside the cabin, Toyota has come up with a mostly black and grey dash design with an uninterrupted top level and circular air vents. The gear shifter has also returned to the more traditional position in the now-separated centre console. Passengers will enjoy the extra comfort and storage with rear passengers getting an extra 20mm of knee room and storage space growing by 90mm. With the rear seats up storage capacity has also grown to an impressive 360 litres.

This is a car designed very much to be driven and its new found agility is reinforced by a 40mm-lower driving position which, complemented by a repositioned steering wheel angle, gives the driver a greater feeling of sportiness. The front seats have also been designed to better hold the driver in place during cornering and steering has been tuned for better response. One thing is for sure. The European influence on this model is clear and with its sharp styling, responsive acceleration and engaging drive, it’s a car that not only comes with all the benefits of a Toyota badge, it’s also great fun to own and to drive. Skoda Fabia RS Performance and style

available to Australian buyers. We at The Busselton-Dunsborough Life were lucky enough to take it for a spin! Sharing some similar exterior features with its bigger brother, the Skoda Octavia, as you would expect from a car that has been built in conjunction with VW, the Fabia RS also displays plenty of characteristics from some of the smaller Volkswagens, in particular the locally available Polo range with which it shares the same drive-train. The Fabia RS has also broadened its appeal by being made available as both a hatchback and a wagon. The first thing immediately noticeable about the Skoda Fabia RS is its stylish looks. With its distinctive RS badge displayed across both the interior and exterior of the vehicle, the car comes complete with 17 Gigaro alloy wheels as standard (available in either silver, anthracite, black or white), a purposeful looking front grille, a chrome dual exhaust, a rear spoiler and a whole host of paint choices and roof colours. The Fabia RS is certainly no shrinking violet and

have never been so attainable!

It might be the smallest model in the 5-strong Skoda family but this hot hatchback is certainly intent on getting itself noticed. Initially available here in two different versions, as the entry level Fabia hatch and the special edition Monte Carlo, Skoda has recently made the flagship of the range, the exciting Fabia RS,

132TSI engine producing 132kW, the Fabia RS claims to propel itself from 0-100 km/h in a little over 7 seconds and we had no reason to doubt those impressive figures. The claimed adrenalin pumping top speed of around 220 km/h, however, was sadly not put to the test! In short, the Fabia RS was a lot of fun to drive and we thoroughly enjoyed the 7-speed automatic dual-clutch DSG gearbox with paddle shift, which allowed us to shift gears whilst still in full control of the wheel. We also found the mid-range poke of the engine incredibly responsive with the car displaying a real liveliness between 2500-3500rpm. It was also nice to know that safety levels on the Fabia RS had a reassuringly strong Volkswagen influence with the car featuring six airbags, electronic stability control as well as a five-star crash rating. Available at $27,990 for the RS Hatch and $29,990 for the RS Wagon, the Fabia RS is great fun to drive, looks fabulous and offers extraordinary value for money. It will be the talk of the town before you know it! we gained plenty of inquisitive looks on the freeway during our drive. Get inside and the cabin takes much of its cue again from the Polo with an attractive, high-line RS instrument panel and sports seats as standard. It’s also surprisingly spacious for a small car with easily enough room for 4 adults to be transported in comfort. An impressive list of standard features includes amongst others, an MP3 player with iPod connectivity, Bluetooth phone connection, a chilled glove box, climatronic auto-air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, split-folding rear seats and a multi-function trip computer. So to the fun bit! Somewhat hampered, of course, by the prevailing local speed limits we still managed to give the car a good workout. Powered by a twin charged dual fuel injection 44

Talking Property by Lee York Most people would agree that the real estate market is close to turning but how do you know when it is the right time to buy? If I have learnt one thing after more than 13 years in the industry, it is that everyone wants to buy at the bottom of the market. The only problem with waiting until the market has bottomed out, is that we often don’t realise it has happened until the market has started to rise again, i.e. the point when prices start to increase as demand outstrips supply. Real estate is just like any other market; it responds to the forces of supply and demand. Therefore, the advantage of buying just before the market bottoms out is that stock levels are still fairly high and sellers are still very keen to sell. This, of course, means buyers are much more likely to find the property they are looking for at a great price. Conversely, waiting for the market to turn could mean buyers are forced to grab what they can. Furthermore, when the market is coming off a period of negative growth, sellers are generally very keen to claw back their losses. This can mean a reluctance to negotiate on price which can often lead to the property being withdrawn from the market as soon as they realise the market is on an upward swing. Since my last update in May, buyers have continued to gain confidence, resulting in stock levels now sitting below what is considered to be market equilibrium. Those who read my article in May will recall that REIWA statistics indicate the number of homes listed for sale in the metro area needs to be around 12,000 for the market to be in equilibrium. We saw this achieved midyear, and the number of homes listed has been sitting around 10,500 to 11,000 since August.

Therefore, many experts believe that when considering if now is the right time to buy, the statistics are definitely suggesting that the answer is yes! Calculating the best way forward

by Paul Jennings First home savings calculator

I’m sure everyone will be pleased to hear that buying a house is much less complicated than it used to be. At Aussie Home Loans we have some pretty nifty calculators that help determine exactly what a property will cost as well as analysing the effects of different scenarios on the life of a loan. These scenarios include increased repayments, lump sum payments and even splitting the repayments by fixing interest rates on part of the loan. Many of the questions I am regularly asked can be answered by some of the calculators available online. Here are some of the tools available:-

The Federal Government will contribute 17% of whatever a borrower puts in up to a total of $935, and give a tax break on the interest. Use the calculator to see how to build up a healthy deposit using one of these accounts.

Split loan calculator

This helps to decide if fixing part of a loan is right for the individual. A broker will, of course, help with any actions arising from this decision.

Where can I afford to buy?

This all-in-one tool works out an individual’s borrowing power and then enables the selection of potential areas of interest. It will then show suburbs in that area that are affordable to the buyer, linking to Residex reports about each suburb.

1 minute mortgage calculator

A simple tool in which the amount to be borrowed and purchase price are inputted and, in turn, the best interest rates to consider before contacting a broker are displayed. This also helps to calculate savings when refinancing.

Stamp duty calculator

This can add a big chunk to the cost of buying a property. Our philosophy at Aussie Geographe is that it is “smart to ask” before going down the road to property purchase. If you are considering a new home loan or thinking of refinancing, visit aussie.com.au, have a look at the calculators and then contact us to discuss availability when ready to purchase. Paul Jennings is the owner of Aussie Geographe, 103 Queen Street, Busselton. Contact him on 0427 522861 or one of his team on 9751 2155.

How much can I borrow?

After entering personal financial details, customers are instantly given a figure that they may be able to borrow. The result is instant and contact details are not required.

Extra repayments calculator

See the impact that an extra few dollars could make on the life and interest of a loan.

Lump sum repayments calculator

Got extra cash? Maybe a work bonus or gift? That lump sum could save thousands in the long run.

What are my loan repayments?

This enables borrowers to put in the amount they wish to borrow and see instantly if they are able to afford the repayments. 56

Goanna Gallery & Bush Café Meet the team Born and bred in Scotland, Duncan and Alison Timmons, owners of the Goanna Gallery, are without doubt the adventurous sort. Deciding to swap their busy London life as Chef and Executive PA respectively for a new challenge, they moved to WA in 2008 and took on the management of the café-restaurant at Goanna Gallery. After quickly falling in love with the peaceful bush setting and the south-west lifestyle, they chose to settle and start a family here. Moving halfway across the world to run a busy bush café would normally be a big enough challenge for most, but this year has seen the couple take on even more challenges. After welcoming their son Aidan into the world just before Christmas and coping with the summer rush, they have since expanded the café operations, launching a new catering business with the help of business partner Tim Meikle. Tim is a qualified chef and close friend from New Zealand who worked with Duncan for over 2 years at Bruce Poole’s La Trompette in London as part of a Michelin star winning team along with other stints at restaurants owned by Gordon Ramsay and Alain Ducasse. “It has been incredible to have a chef of Tim’s calibre join the team to launch GG catering and to help to develop the business while Alison has been on maternity leave,” said Duncan. For those of you who attended the recent inaugural Margaret River Gourmet Escape you may have tried Tim’s signature

Slow Roast Porchetta! In addition to the new catering business, Duncan and Alison also took on the ownership of the Goanna Gallery gift shop in July with the aim of improving on the unique café and retail experience. The shop is a true Aladdin’s Cave, featuring small gifts, including products from local artisans, soaps and body care products, candles, homewares, art and quality children’s toys. There is an emphasis on connecting with local wildlife with a range of animal-influenced and eco-sensitive products available. The transition to operating both the café and gallery has been aided by manager Jo Felton, who has brought her considerable retail experience to the business. “We aspire to source products that reflect our unique position on the Cape whilst keeping it fun and enjoyable like our lifestyles,” said Jo. Welcoming and passionate about the shop, her sense of humour filters through to some of the more fun and quirky gifts recently sourced. Goanna Gallery and Bush Café is located at 278 Hayes Road, Dunsborough, just a few minutes’ drive from the town centre. A Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

What huge expectations lay before the author of the Harry Potter series when her first adult novel was published! No doubt many rushed to buy The Casual Vacancy solely because of the successes of J. K. Rowling’s adventures of Potter in his fantasy wizard world. However, from the very first lines, it is clear that this is a novel as farfetched from fantasy as the cold light of day. In fact, often, it is written with such insight to characters’ thoughts and psychologies that it feels quite confrontational. Widely respected Barry Fairbrother of Pagford (a small English town, seemingly perfect and packed with the usual stereotypical characters) suddenly dies, leaving behind a desirable place on the Parish Council. His death and empty seat release a chain reaction of events, which avalanches heavily on the community. Persevering through the complications of remembering who is who during the opening chapters, the reader will start to piece together the intricate relationships, feuds and motivations of Pagford’s inhabitants. Raw emotions rip through the novel, interspersed with welcome bouts of honest humour. With plenty of colourful characters, and a fascinating spiral of intermingled paths of life, The Casual Vacancy stirs up an intriguing mixed bag of emotions.

They Came To The Margaret by Frances Terry

In 1937, Frances Terry married into one of WA’s oldest families and, over time, she discovered bundles of preserved letters that told of this family’s early pioneering days in the Margaret River region. It is around these fascinating letters, and conversations with family members, that Frances writes her novel, centring on Alfred and Ellen Bussell. As well as the letters there are illustrations and photographs, which ground the stories. We are taken through the journey of the newlyweds’ life, right from their excitement and adventurous spirit in setting up a new home together in Ellensbrook. Much hard work, many loved children and great successes, as well as bitter lows, tell the saga of Alfred and his young ‘Nellie’. They Came To The Margaret is a captivating read, all the more engaging knowing that letters and photographs are authentic. A real taste of the early days of life in the Margaret River region is given, complete with real people’s stories and personalities. Grammar and spelling in the letters are wisely left uncorrected, and occasionally, punctuation may be unchecked in the narrative but this just adds to the book’s charm. Once read, there is a feeling of complete admiration for WA’s brave pioneers. The above books were supplied by Barefoot Books, Busselton’s leading independent bookshop. Visit the store at Shop 23, Fig Tree Lane, Busselton, or call 9751 3905. 68

Effective Sun Protection By Dr Carolyn Bracken Living in Australia means we are more susceptible to skin cancer through sun exposure than many other places in the world. Geography dictates that we are closer to the sun and the ozone layer above us is depleted. In addition to this we spend a lot more time outdoors. Yet despite this almost half of all Australians have never had a professional skin check. This is an even more remarkable statistic when you consider that there is a 95% success rate of treating one of the most aggressive types of cancer found in skin, malignant melanoma, if it is detected in its early stages. A melanoma can start in healthy looking skin or in a freckle or a mole. It can grow anywhere on the body, including areas that don’t see the sun, such as under hair or under feet. It is usually of more than one colour (brown, black, red, white, light grey), whilst it’s most outstanding feature is that it looks different to any other lesion. The most common form of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. It is slow growing and can look like a round or flattened lump, a scaly area or a sore that doesn’t heal. It can be red, pale or pearly in colour and can usually be treated, again, if detection is early. Then there is squamous cell carcinoma, which accounts for approximately a third of skin cancers. So how do you protect yourself against the sun’s rays? Well, other than permanently staying indoors, wearing the right sunscreen and hat is the next best alternative. A good sunscreen protects the skin from the sun’s

damaging ultra-violet (UV) rays and not just the UVB damage that cause burning. It protects against UVA rays which penetrate deeper into the skin causing damage to the skin’s cellular DNA. This can lead to genetic mutations, potentially leading to skin cancer. There are plenty of sunscreen options on the market but it is important to choose the good quality products. Make sure it is SPF30+, waterproof and ‘broad spectrum’, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Apply it daily at least 20 minutes before exposure to the sun and then every two hours. UVA rays are prevalent at all times of the year and can penetrate clouds and glass so it’s not just the careless times when sunscreen hasn’t been applied that lead to skin damage. Over time, every little bit of sun our body sees is contributing to the problem. So this summer, seek shade and wear sunscreen, sun protective clothing, a broadbrimmed hat and wrap-around sunglasses. Your skin will be glad you did. Dr Carolyn Bracken at the Busselton Skin Cancer Clinic is a member of the Skin Cancer College Australasia, lives in Busselton and has been practising locally for 10 years. Her clinic is equipped with advanced diagnostic technology equipment, including a Molemax machine that can record photographic imagery during a full body skin assessment. 10 Tips

for feeling fit and fabulous

If you have put on a few extra kilos over the cooler months there’s still time to tone up. And the good news is there’s no need to take drastic measures! Just follow these simple tips and you can still look great on the beach this summer! 1. Be aware of what you are putting into your body. Keeping a food diary makes it easy to pinpoint how those extra kilos were added and at what times of the day you slip into bad habits. 2. Eat breakfast to kick start your metabolism. This will also help reduce the cravings for a quick muffin or sugary snack while you are out and about. 3. Plan and prepare snacks in advance. If there is a fruit salad, a smoothie, nuts or carrot sticks readily prepared, it is easier to bypass the biscuit tin. 4. Drink more water. Sometimes thirst can be mistaken for hunger so have a glass of water before choosing to snack. Cut back on calorie-packed alcohol and, of course, give up smoking. 5. Indulge more in food that is especially good for you. Eat blueberries, raspberries and apples for their vitamin C and antioxidants (why not buy frozen fruit and use for smoothies), avocados for vitamin E, oily fish for

omega 3, greens for calcium and potassium, and tomatoes as they can increase energy levels. 6. Whatever you eat, eat it slowly as it takes up to twenty minutes for your brain to register the feeling of being full. Consider how much is on your plate and, if necessary, buy smaller plates if it helps! 7. Include a little of what you fancy every now and then. It’s unrealistic to imagine that you’ll never eat chocolate again. If treats are completely banned, they become all the more desirable and could lead to you falling off the healthy wagon completely. 8. Find time to get active. Schedule it – little and often - into the week. The cheapest and easiest activity is walking. Find a route with a hill and focus on putting energy into every step. Go swimming, cycling, or try something new, such as Pilates. Take a friend along so that you’re less likely to find an excuse not to go. 9. Stress can lead to weight gain through increased appetite, and being stressed doesn’t help the way you look. Block off time in the week to meet up with a friend, take a yoga class, dance to a CD, or book in a massage. 10. And finally, reward yourself with new fitness gear, a pedicure or massage and enjoy your new radiance!

Ere Perez

It feels good when we know that the makeup we are using is made by an Australian company from 100% natural ingredients. At Ere Perez they had the idea of producing natural cosmetics and skincare products because Ere herself couldn’t find a makeup range without chemicals and perfumes. At Ere Perez, ingredients are carefully selected from oils, plants extracts and minerals, which are then blended with antioxidants to create healthy makeup that suits every skin type. The first product launched was the Natural Almond Oil Mascara, which nourishes as it paints lashes beautifully black. It is now a bestseller and part of their ever expanding makeup and skincare range. Makeup is also available in packs to suit various lifestyle requirements. Choose the Beach Bag Essentials pack for time spent by the sea, which contains Waterproof Mascara, Beetroot Cheek and Lip Tint with dog rose and beetroot extracts, Carrot Cheek and Lip Balm, and Rosehip Oil Lipbar, SPF15. The Naturally Sporty Gorgeous pack includes the above plus an Aloe Vera Gel Mascara, which can also be used to keep brows in line. And, for those jetting off, the Holiday Essentials pack contains Natural Almond Oil Mascara, Tinted Rice Powder SPF15 (Bronzer) and a Natural Makeup Brush.

The Jojoba Company Crops of jojoba shrubs are nurtured and their beans harvested and pressed in order to obtain the pure jojoba that forms the foundation of a truly natural Australian skincare range, The Jojoba Company. Jojoba has long been associated with caring for skin and has remarkable natural moisturising qualities that help to fight against wrinkles. It has been shown to also boost skin elasticity, visibly firm skin, lessen the appearance of stretch marks and visibly smooth fine lines, wrinkles and scars. It also helps with problematic skin conditions. An amazing property of jojoba is that it can provide similar nurturing and moisturising properties as our own skin. It is also hypoallergenic and contains powerful antioxidants, Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, and Vitamins A, D and E. Beautifully packaged, all products have Australian jojoba as their signature ingredient. It is blended with other premium and natural ingredients, including uniquely Australian extracts, such as Kakadu plum and Quandong, to create a hydrating day cream, firming eye balm, overnight renewal cream, and hand cream. Typically, they assist with emotional functioning, relationship management and communication, goal setting and problem refining.

By Jane Giles

Many of us at some point in our lives will experience some form of stress or tension that will affect our daily equilibrium. However, in most cases, very few of us will openly discuss these personal issues which in turn can lead to the problems being exacerbated.

Relationships – prevention is better than cure

A discussion with a professional counsellor can provide invaluable help to those feeling stuck, troubled, tense, frightened, stressed and unsure of themselves – providing help, in particular, to those finding it difficult to make everyday decisions.

We regularly service our cars and maintain and repair our homes, yet our relationships (which are key to our way of life) receive little or no such care and consideration until they are severely broken down.

People, of course, seek counselling for various reasons. While each individual or couple differs, below are some of the most common reasons for seeking the services of a professional counsellor

A visit to a counsellor can assist in this area by helping us to:-

• Stress and anxiety

Understand how we relate to each other within a relationship.

Gain more clarity about what is actually causing the rift in a relationship. Feel better and happier within a relationship.

• Grief and loss • Relationship issues, such as separation or divorce

Achieve a win-win situation for everyone.

• Major changes in personal circumstances

• Depression or bullying

Online counselling sessions are a new convenient way of getting help when and where we want it. Get professional help from the comfort of your own home at a time that suits. Fully encrypted for your privacy, all you need is internet access!

Whatever the reason, a professional counsellor will help you to understand and address these issues. Counselling is an opportunity for us to talk to a professional who can help put a

individual dishes, which, incidentally, is exactly what we did!

The Deck Marina Bar and Restaurant

It’s been 18 months since we at The BusseltonDunsborough Life last dined at The Deck, Port Geographe Marina. Well, since then plenty’s been happening and, with a new team in place cooking up quite a reputation for themselves, we thought it was high time we returned.

So to our lunch, and after ordering a couple of glasses of Watershed Margaret River’s unwooded Chardonnay we tucked into our first choice of salad, containing cured salmon, green asparagus, grilled scallops and a dill vinaigrette. A light, deliciously fresh dish, the warm scallops and wonderful cured Tasmanian salmon worked perfectly with the dill dressing. If you like your scallops tender and juicy then don’t miss this! Next we sampled a Quinoa salad with grilled strips of Black Angus fillet of beef served with an onion and pepper relish. Accompanied by a glass of Tempranillo Shiraz from another Margaret River winery, Hayshed Hill, again this was an excellent choice with the warmed, rare fillet beautifully complementing the variety of flavours on offer.

With over 30 years of Michelin hotel and restaurant experience behind them, Hans and Dagma Van Diest are no strangers to pulling together a unique, enticing menu. Having previously wowed members of the Geographe Bay Yacht Club, 6 months ago they made the short hop across town to The Deck, a move that that has given them the opportunity to share their culinary skills with a much wider audience. The result is an inspiring, European-influenced, modern Australian menu that specialises in an array of fresh seafood dishes.

If you haven’t visited The Deck for a while, we can assure you are in for a treat. Whether it’s for lunch or dinner, with or without the kids, there’s plenty of treats for all tastes. For the adventurous, you can even try the ‘Trust the Chef’ option! For a cost of $45, the team will cook up a surprise 3-course meal based on your own personal preferences. We must try that next time!

Arriving for lunch on a glorious spring day, we decided to order from the special lunch menu that now includes a summer salad lunch special with all dishes at $20 or under. The restaurant also operates its main menu throughout the day so if you are looking for something more substantial at lunchtime the choice is endless. As well as a fabulous selection of starters, including oysters, a variety of prawn dishes and the popular Deck Antipasto tasting plate, mains include a Fresh Fish of the Day, Zarzuela de Pescado, a traditional Spanish seafood stew, Porcini Mushroom Risotto and a premium cut Scotch Fillet Steak amongst other delights.

Open 7 days 11am til late (Sunday 11am to 10pm) 21 Spinnaker Boulevard, Port Geographe Marina Fully Licensed Tel 9751 2960 Bookings essential www.thedeckmarina.com.au

For wine connoisseurs, The Deck will also appeal. The wine list is cleverly listed by grape varieties so if you know what you like it’s easy to find. There is also an impressive choice of wines by the glass so you can even mix and match wines with 76

The excellent Flying Fish Cove range of wines is also exclusively stocked. our customers. As it is so addictive, many people ask for the recipe and there are others who try to create it at home. Unfortunately for those people, we have an intellectual property policy and that recipe is firmly locked away! We have also yet to hear of a customer who has successfully recreated this soup at home! At Peko Peko, we continue that vision of exploring a unique take on flavour and believe that this is one of the reasons why we stand out as a quality food establishment. Visit Peko Peko at 59 Dunn Bay Road, Dunsborough, to try the soup for yourself!

Peko Peko’s famous Pumpkin and Salmon Soup was first conceived in 2004. It was born out of an intense conversation between my husband, Troy, and our young talented chef at the time, Yuta Echigo. On the one hand, the Japanese chef was very passionate that miso soup should be made in the traditional way but, fortunately for us, he was open enough to adopt our vision of combining ingredients that otherwise wouldn’t normally be tried. The idea went on to completely deconstruct the traditional miso soup before putting it back together. The result was the marriage of a unique type of miso and traditional stock and the sweetness of pumpkin, garlic and zucchini before finally layering the soup with Thai flavours. Since the release of the soup, it has become a signature dish that is extremely popular with

Matching Wine with Food Part 2

Matching the right wine with the right food, like many other things in life, often comes down to personal preference. There are plenty of people out there who will tell you should always have white wine with fish and red wine with beef etc. but let’s not forget we all have different palates and different opinions. In this most subjective of topics there are, however, some basic principles worth applying. Below are a few rules worth adhering to.

sparkling wines that more than do the job. Looking for a great WA sparkling wine, then try the Sparkling White from Margaret River based Becketts Flat. Available online at $31.50 a ...cont. pg 84 bottle.

Appetisers

Pre-dinner nibbles, such as bruschetta, canapÊs or olives are designed to give the palate a jump-start and to get those taste-buds tingling. Therefore, at this point it’s important to not overload the palate with big, weighty, powerful wines. Focus on refreshing styles that help to set the scene and awaken the taste buds rather than wines that steal the show. Champagne is an ideal accompaniment to a range of appetisers and in Australia we have a range of fabulous 82

– fruity in flavour. Try a Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay or Semillon. In Australia, we can proudly take the credit for inventing and mastering Asian fusion. This delicious style of cuisine is not only packed with exotic flavours but is also virtually fat free. Reward the palate with finely tuned Rieslings, Western Australian Sauvignon Blancs and fresh oak-balanced Chardonnays, or try Margaret River Cabernet Merlot blends.

We all the love the classic Italian Antipasto, a mixed platter of artichokes, marinated capsicum, olives, eggplant and prosciutto. This dish is best served with clean, vibrant, refreshing whites like a dry Verdelho or Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. Our warm WA summers mean salads are popular starters at this time of the year. The subject of wine with salads could probably be an article on its own but generally common sense works here. A green or mixed salad without a dressing is one thing but if dressed, particularly with vinegar, things can get complicated. For seafood salads, generally the wines that go with seafood will work, for Nicoise and Caesar salads try a tangy Sauvignon Blanc, for a chicken salad try a middle weight Chardonnay and for pasta salads try an acidity-rich, dry white to cut through the stodge.

Mains

The great Aussie barbecue is an institution full of explosive flavours and laden with platters of red meat and fish. Wines in this environment need to be up to the flavour challenge! For red meats drink wines full of fruit with plenty of body. Choose a Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache or Zinfandel. Smallwater Estate, Donnybrook, offers a fabulous Zinfandel with bags of flavour and spices. The adventurous amongst you could also try a sparkling red; this style is becoming increasingly popular. If it’s chicken or fish you are serving up then white wines should still have the same quality
