Winter Fashion
Stephanie Says…
The latest fashion trends from The Busselton-Dunsborough Life’s resident fashion expert...
baroque add touches of luxury to an outfit, and lace, being lighter and quite intricate in nature, adds a delicate note. Layering with such textures helps to define a body shape as well as creating a more interesting outfit. As for prints, there are plenty of leopard and snake prints around and new for the season is the winter floral print. This has a dark background with an oversized floral print. Winter colours are sumptuously rich, such as reds (especially oxblood), greens, strong cobalt blue, navy and purple, and metallics are still popular too. While colour is set to be prevalent, there is also a trend back to colour blocking with black and white. Men’s fashion embraces colour too with blues, greens and reds featuring strongly for chunky knits, shirts and within prints too. Add just one colourful item for layering on a cold day, stick to muted greys and black for the other pieces. And men don’t miss out either on leather jackets or the redefined bomber jackets. The latter comes with plenty of texture or with leather panels.
A cool change!
After another hot summer, the thought of layering up and getting cosy seems quite appealing! So embrace the change of season as now is the perfect time to choose that winter essential, the leather jacket. For those who missed out on one during autumn, this season’s leather jacket is not only available in the classic black look but also in plenty of vibrant colours, including blue, green and red. The figure hugging biker style is still the most popular and looks great with skinny jeans as well as with dresses and skirts. Detailing on these jackets is fabulous with studs, exposed heavy zips and buckled straps. On the subject of jackets, gaining ground in popularity is the new-style bomber jacket. Featuring a strong sports influence, this season, latest designs are also incorporating a luxe feel with panels of silk, quilted fabric or leather. The pencil skirt may still be a wardrobe staple but it’s the A-line and flirty Seduce skater that are set to be at Echo Clothing the winter choices for skirts. Above or to the knee, in a weighty winter fabric, they are great with ankle boots. Leather is featuring hugely in winter fashion. It is soft, feminine and refined and comes in pants, tops, skirts and dresses, or adds an edge in the form of panels or sleeves. Whether faux or real, this season’s leather smooths the silhouette so is incredibly flattering. Other popular textures on winter clothes are fur, again, faux or real, baroque and lace. Fur and 10

10 Ways To Add Value To Your Home
…without breaking the bank!
Our home is our biggest investment and adding value doesn’t have to cost the earth. So whether you are looking to increase the value of your property or simply looking to improve your quality of life, here are 10 great, affordable ways to achieve those renovation goals.
sell homes applies more than ever today. As the most important room in the house, a renovated kitchen is a sure fire bet for adding value to the home and renovations don’t have to break the budget. A lick of paint or new handles on existing cabinet doors can work wonders. Of course, if there is a bit more money in the pot, adding stone bench tops can be a real winner and with a variety of composite stone tops now on the market you might be surprised at how affordable some
1. Give the kitchen and bathrooms a makeover The old adage that kitchens and bathrooms 30
home & garden 3. Paint throughout Never underestimate how much value can be added to your home with a fresh coat of paint to either the interior or exterior. A good paint job is not only relatively cheap but it’s also the easiest way to inject new life into dull, lifeless rooms. Choose neutral colours to maximise appeal and if you can’t afford a professional painter to do the whole house, employ them to paint just the entrance and living areas to maximise first impressions.
4. Clean from top to toe How long is it since you gave your home a really good clean? Start from the highest point and work down, cleaning all work surfaces and in particular window dressings. Take down your blinds before cleaning, send your curtains to the drycleaners and clean out cupboards. You will have to move furniture out of rooms but the results will be worth it.
5. Improve lighting There’s nothing worse than a dark and dingy interior and by adding either more natural light or attractive artificial lighting your home can be transformed. Think about installing a skylight or an extra window in dark areas of the home or install the latest energy efficient LED lights to give the house a more contemporary look.
can be. In the bathroom, try applying fresh sealant around wet areas, replace old towel rails and toilet roll holders, replace old shower heads and clean grouting. Again, stone vanity tops can create a real wow factor.
6. De-clutter and add space
2. Upgrade or clean flooring
We are all guilty of hanging on to too many unnecessary items. A cluttered home is not only untidy but also appears much smaller. Have a garage sale, rent a storage unit, or start making trips to the landfill and whittle down your home’s contents to a manageable size.
Attending to dirty carpets and scratched wooden flooring makes a home seem bigger, brighter and much more appealing. For carpet stains, try steam cleaning, wash and wax for laminates, and for wooden floors, sand them back and apply fresh coats of varnish.

7. Open up the home
outside, chances are it could be because of out-dated exposed brickwork. Rendering the brickwork to a home can be expensive, particularly on 2 storey homes where scaffolding costs come into play but the results can be stunning. It may cost a few thousand dollars but the returns could far outweigh the costs.
Open plan living is all the rage and today’s homes are all about larger rooms and less of them. Knocking out non-structural walls is a great value-add to make a home appear larger than it really is. You can open up the kitchen to the living room or the lounge to the backyard relatively inexpensively. Bi-fold doors leading out from the living area to a sheltered outdoor area can also create more usable living space.
10. Landscape the gardens An unkempt garden can block out light, obscure views and dramatically reduce curb appeal. As one of the lowest cost, highest return makeovers in which you can invest, a beautifully landscaped garden is a great investment. If there’s money in the budget, it may even pay to have a designer come up with a garden and planting scheme that makes the most of the layout and proportions of the house. And, while you are about it, make sure that driveways and paving around the home are regularly jet washed.
8. Give the front entrance a makeover First impressions can make all the difference so always ensure the front of your home is looking its best for passers-by. Sand down and varnish wooden front doors or add some paint, repair ripped flyscreens and install brand new light fittings. A shiny new house number, swish new mailbox and new plant pot or water feature will add that finishing touch.
9. Render the outside brickwork If your home is starting to show its age on the 32

Design For The Home
The Kitchen
help to retain the uncluttered look too, such as pop up range hoods that are only visible when needed. Smaller versions of appliances or appliances that do more than one job can also help. The recent trend of glossy white kitchens is now starting to be replaced by textures that have a flatter finish with a more natural feel. For cabinetry, there is a demand for timber veneers, metal finish laminates, matte or satin white, black and dark grey polyurethane doors. Add depth and interest to a design by showcasing a mixture of textures and add floors of timber, brick, slate or polished concrete. Walls also look great in raw or painted brick, or concrete. Colours should be kept simple, such as white or black or simply left as the material’s natural colour. Brass accents are growing in popularity and look fabulous when teamed up with natural finishes. The warm colour and shine are a perfect foil to flat surfaces elsewhere in the kitchen. A pendant light or feature splashback are great ways to add a brass or bronze-like tone. When it comes to lighting, it is LED that is in demand. LED lighting can be installed in a myriad of places, making it easier to create ambiance, contrast and interest. Lights under and in cabinets, in flooring, ceilings and alcoves are easily installed and can even change colour to suit different occasions.
With interior trends often taking much of their influences from fashion runways these days, the kitchen is the ideal room in which to stamp some personality in the home. After all, as the most lived-in space, and as a place where friends and family regularly congregate, it offers a chance to really show off those creative skills. And, with open plan living the norm, there are plenty of options to consider and plenty of opportunities to create a unique look. So what’s happening in kitchen trends right now? Currently, the key look is sleek, minimalist and striking in its simplicity. This is achieved by incorporating long benchtops, unfussy cabinetry and open shelving. Voids and floor space add to the minimal look and if careful thought has gone into planning the design of the kitchen, then the number of cabinets can be reduced too. As for the cabinets themselves, there is a definite requirement for quality workmanship with cabinets often designed to fit flush to the benchtop. Soft closing cabinet doors are essential and drawers with no handles, using instead subtle recessed edges for fingers, are becoming increasingly popular. For a more unique take on the minimalist look, use a single unit of cabinetry, perhaps a special one-off design, which can also be used as workbench space. Technological features can 34

Talking Property With Lee York
Has the property market finally turned? Well, the latest REIWA and Landgate figures from 2012 certainly show that the established housing market has. Sales volumes jumped a whopping 50% in Dunsborough on the previous year with 135 completed house sales. This exceeded the sales turnover in 2007, was above the 15 year average and lead to the average annual median sale price jumping 3.7% for the year to $560,000. Following on from this, the start to 2013 has been by far the best we have experienced since 2006, resulting in 50 accepted offers and over $50m worth of recorded sales by early May. The most promising sign is the overall return of interest amongst buyers in all sectors of the real estate market. For several years now, the most frustrating aspect for real estate agents and sellers has been the total lack of enquiries from buyers, resulting in a very subdued selling market. However, towards the second half of 2012, we started to experience a real pick up of interest and at the start of 2013, it was almost like someone had flicked a switch! Encouragingly, it has not just been in the cheaper segments of the market where interest has increased. Yallingup Hill is a good example of this, with my colleague Andrew Hopkins and I having sold 7 properties between $1.35 million and $2.05 million in the first 4 months of this year. This was more than we have ever sold in that area in a 12 month period in the past. But perhaps the most satisfying aspect of these sales is the clear shift in buyer perception. Gone are fears of further price drops, replaced instead with renewed confidence that the market has stabilised and is about to surge. Buyers have finally recognised that the region offers investors exceptional value with a good prospect of
both high rental returns and sustainable medium to long term capital growth. Anyone who knows the Dunsborough, Yallingup and Eagle Bay market will be aware that this has always been an area of limited availability. Combine that with the recently completed sales and the subsequent drop of available properties, I would suggest an increase in prices can’t be far away in these premium locations. Lee York is a Director of JHY Realty, Dunsborough, and can be contacted on 0438 867737 or in the office on 9759 1300. Property Investment
Don’t wait to buy real estate – buy real estate and wait
For many years, property investment has been seen as the domain of the wealthy investor with cash to spare. But right now, according to John Symond, Executive Chairman of Aussie Home Loans, property investment is well and truly within the reach of everyday Australians. “It’s the perfect time for the average Australian, if they have some money saved, to consider a move into property investment,” said Symond. “Both fixed rates and variable rates are the lowest they have been in years whilst housing prices in some areas are historically low but are starting to move back up. Currently, in some areas, investors can now earn rental yields between 5 and 10 per cent. “Properties with these high rental yields¹ are of great benefit to those investors who have less available disposable income to put towards the property’s associated bills. If they are earning higher gross rental yields, investors can afford to own it in the first place whereas otherwise they might not be able to,” he continued. “Everyday Australians can now consider moving into the investment property market and have the rent cover the mortgage. In effect, they could ‘set and forget’ an investment plan for their future.” Property investment loans are not that different from any other type of home loan. Like other loans, there is a choice between
fixed, variable or split interest rates and a range of flexible features, such as redraws. But there are two types of loans that tend to be more attractive to investors; interest only and line of credit loans, both of which have different advantages. As when choosing any other type of home loan, it’s always important to compare rates, features, fees and charges. Start by contacting a qualified mortgage broker who will be well equipped to advise on either how to take the first steps into the investment market or how to add to an existing portfolio. Brokers can search hundreds of home loans from a range of lenders to find the one that suits an individual’s circumstances. They will also offer a thorough service, comparing all the features of the loan, not just the rate. The above article was supplied by Aussie Geographe, Busselton. If you are interested in finding out more about an investment property home loan, or finding a better deal on your existing home loan, contact Paul Jennings or one of his team for a free no obligation appointment. Call 9751 2155 or 0427 522 861 or visit their offices at 103 Queen Street. ¹ To calculate gross rental yield on an investment property, multiply rent by 52 weeks and divide by purchase price and multiply by 100 to get a percentage. 44

Berm House
46
property & ďŹ nance Designed by Dane Richardson of Dane Design Australia and built by Tallwood Constructions, this home was the winner of the 2012 SW HIA Custom Built Home $1,000,001 to $1,500,000. Completely unique and bespoke, the property’s most striking feature on approach is that it appears to be growing up out of the top of the hill on which it sits. This has been achieved by back filling against the concrete formed walls and as a result the home offers very little visual environmental impact. Split over three levels with three double bedrooms on the lower level, living areas on the mid-section of the home and the master bedroom on the top, the property is extremely functional with each room having commanding hinterland views over sparkling Geographe Bay. Outside, leading directly off the living areas, the covered outside barbeque and dining area with fabulous in-ground concrete swimming pool provides the perfect place to relax and enjoy the views. For further information on building with Tallwood Constructions, call Alex Campbell on 0427 568214.

Managing Investments With Rob Zdravevski
The behaviour and psychology of an investor can have a huge effect on an investment portfolio’s performance. Here are some of my favourite beliefs and tips that may be useful when devising an investment strategy.
Ignore the noise
The swinging pendulum
Most investors fail to buy things that are cheap and fail to sell things that are dear. This is mainly because they buy and sell at the wrong time as they overreact to short-term economic and political news; much of which is seldom informative or relevant. Always try to focus on the facts rather than the stories that are told. Don’t blame the market because the market doesn’t have any memory or knowledge of anyone’s particular investment position! Often, investors can be their own worst enemy. Ignore short-term noise, create a strategy and stay on its course.
The collective behaviour of the entire community of investors determines market prices. Deep analysis, strong processes and good judgment are necessary but not sufficient for investment success. Prices swing like a pendulum from one extreme to another at various moments and these fluctuations then produce investment opportunities. When buyers are numerous and sellers scarce, opportunity is bound to be limited. But when sellers are plentiful and highly motivated while potential buyers are hesitant, then great investment opportunities tend to surface. These are the moments when to buy the things that are cheap and sell the things that are dear. Rob Zdravevski is the proprietor of Karri Asset Advisors, specialists in the provision of investment advice and equity recommendations for clients’ portfolios. Holders of an Australian Financial Service License, the company is located at Unit 14, 25-27 Dunn Bay Road, Dunsborough. Contact Rob on 0438 921 403 or email rob@karriasset.com.au
Volatility is not risk Risk relates to the probability of losing capital, while volatility is the rate of change in the price. Volatility is the price that investors pay for long-term capital gains. For example, a term deposit in a bank has no volatility in its value and therefore doesn’t provide an opportunity for capital gains. Grasping the idea that volatility is OK and tolerable together with being able to filter the noise will help us all become better investors. 48

Book Reviews Life After Life
by Kate Atkinson Critically-acclaimed author Kate Atkinson has always been recognised as a writer who delves deeply into the emotions of her characters, delivering intriguing storylines. Her latest creation, Life After Life, another bestseller, once again features her trademark style. Life After Life reads exactly as the title suggests. Ursula, born into a wealthy family in 1910, never takes her first breath and dies silently, yet, bizarrely, after a few more attempts at life and slight changes of circumstances, she finally manages to begin her childhood. Throughout her life, Ursula dies and is then born to start over again. She has a sixth sense of her future and an astute awareness of loss that helps her to avoid certain life choices. She learns to make decisions that take her down a different path, and these decisions, in turn, greatly affect not only her life, but the lives of those around her too. This book is emotionally charged and has been cleverly constructed with jumps forwards and backwards in time and the constant changing of events. It’s a fascinating journey finding out how Ursula’s life and the turbulent world around her will finally end up and, indeed, if her life will eventually end at all.
Busselton 1830-1850 “…outstation on the Vasse” by Rodger Jennings
This book is a goldmine of facts for not only history enthusiasts but also for those who want to delve further in to the background of Busselton and its broader district. The twenty year period covered by Jennings covers a huge amount of ground, starting with the events that lead to the town of Busselton being formed by the European settlers of Augusta, who were in search of farmland. Jennings’ use of historical records and authentic letters, journals and diaries in his research allowed him to obtain great detail and accuracy. By quoting from these sources, as well as featuring photographs and maps, this book manages to recreate not only the events but also the adventures and emotional highs and lows of Busselton’s early settlers in this very exciting period of WA history. The above books were supplied by Barefoot Books, Busselton’s leading independent bookshop. Visit the store at Shop 23, Fig Tree Lane, Busselton, or call 9751 3905. 49

Photography Tips Keeping it simple
Trying to fit too much into an image can be a trap that many of us amateur photographers regularly fall into. We think the more the better, as the more this will say something about the subject matter or the more it will show about a place. Rarely, though, is this true and there is always a reason why we focus on a particular image, person, place or even object. This should be the main subject of the image. All the other elements within the frame should add to this subject and not distract from it. So what are some of the ways we can keep our subject the centre of attention?
Rule of thirds A generally accepted rule of composition is the “rule of thirds”. When taking your next shot, imagine dividing your image into three equal sections both vertically and horizontally. The point where each section intersects is regarded as a powerful position to place your main subject. The rule of third will work for most types of photography including portraits, architecture, landscapes and action shots.
this to your advantage. Depth of field is a great way to isolate your subject. If you can’t get in close to the subject to get rid of distracting foregrounds or backgrounds then open up your aperture and reduce the depth of field within the image. This will send the parts of the image that you don’t really want to show out of focus, leaving the viewer to concentrate on the main subject within the image. Of course, the main subject also has the added advantage of bringing a sense of movement and dynamics to your image. Happy snapping!
Get in close Get in close, fill the frame with your subject and keep the composition simple. Don’t let other elements distract from the main reason for the shot.
Use your shutter and aperture The human eye is always drawn towards the part of the image that is in sharp focus, so use 50

Painting In Watercolours Have you ever considered producing your own watercolour painting? Don’t worry if you can’t draw. Watercolour painting is all about creating impressions of what you see and feel. Start by selecting your paint. This can be overwhelming but just stick to the primary colours of blue, red and yellow (for example, Ultramarine, Cerulean Blue Hue, Cadmium Red Hue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue, Lemon Yellow). Use a palette to mix these and create almost any colour you need. Add other hues once you get a feel for what you want. You will need 3 round brushes of varying sizes with sharp points and a rigger for long lines. Sable brushes are often favoured by artists but you can buy cheaper sable synthetic mix brushes. Using watercolour paper, begin by playing
with the paint and brushes. Notice what effects strokes of brushes have and how blends of colours capture your mood or remind you of nature. See what happens when colours are applied to wet or dry paint. Watch how the painting changes as it dries. You may have created your first piece of abstract art! The exciting part comes next; take a look outside or find a photo you like and try to get colours and shapes down on paper. You may want to intensify a colour, enlarge a shape or leave something out; remember, what makes it unique is your impression of how you see it. Before you know it, you will have your own individual pieces of artwork to adorn your walls, plus they make great gifts too! 52

complex spans both sides of Queen Street, a short walk from Busselton’s famous jetty. ArtGeo Cultural Complex has two main galleries – ArtGeo Gallery and the Courthouse Gallery. ArtGeo Gallery provides a delightful ‘white cube’ space for temporary and touring exhibitions in a refurbished early 20th century pavilion. The Courthouse Gallery specialises in arts and crafts from the South West region displayed in a 19th century judicial precinct. The historic precinct includes a spectacular courtroom furnished with original jarrah fittings,
a bond store with authentic wood-block floor, the old police station and nine primitive gaol cells. A fodder room and stables overlooking a pleasant grassed courtyard have been converted into a workshop and artists’ studios. The police sergeant’s quarters adjacent to the Courthouse now houses the Busselton Art Society and Acting Up theatre school, whilst Busselton’s branch of the West Australian Woodturners Association work in a modern shed next to ArtGeo Gallery.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class All new premium hatch arrives down under!
It was in 1997 that Mercedes-Benz unveiled the first incarnation of its mini MPV, the A-Class, to a highly expectant public. As the first ever small, front-wheel drive vehicle from Mercedes-Benz, it represented a huge step down in size for the luxury car manufacturer as well as revealing a new, unexpected upright look. Fifteen years, however, is a long time in motoring and although the original A-Class oozed innovation and sold over 1.6 million units worldwide, buyers’ tastes have since changed. Recognising that the mini MPV market has been superseded by a hotly contested premium hatch market, the all-new 2013 A-Class Mercedes-Benz is now a vastly different animal to its predecessor. In fact, other than its name, this new, exciting entry-level Mercedes shares little in common with its forerunner. Visually, it’s a completely different car. Now measuring in at around 4.3 metres, the new A-class has added 409mm in length and around 131mm to its wheelbase. Its newfound cool, more youthful looks are also “the modern, contemporary enhanced by its more low-slung feel also flows through into design. Longer, wider and lower, the interior” the A-Class has been transformed into a sleek, sporty, fashionable package. The more modern, contemporary feel also flows through to the interior with a selection of clever design touches. These include subtle carbon-style inserts on the dashboard and doors and swivelling tri-air vents as featured in the SLS AMG. The extra length and width also translate into more interior space and a bigger boot. Power-wise, the new A-Class gives a choice of both diesel and petrol four-cylinder engines, starting with a 90kW 1.6 litre petrol engine, which claims 5.8L per 100km. Other petrol options include the A200 BlueEFFICIENCY and the top of the range A250 Sport, which is powered by a 155kW 2.0 litre unit capable of achieving 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. The diesel option is the A 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, which offers impressive fuel efficiency at 4.6L per 100km. All engines also feature the ECO Start/Stop function ensuring that the engine is temporarily switched off in stationary traffic. 58
motoring As you would expect, the new A-Class is also packed with an array of safety features as standard. As well as parking sensors, a reversing camera and an auto reverse-park system, equipment also includes nine airbags, ABS, ESC and Collision Prevention Assist. This automatically stops the car if it detects a collision at less than 30km/h. Add in Bluetooth, iPod and USB compatibility
and a choice of either Comfort or Sports suspension systems, and it’s clear MercedesBenz have left few stones unturned in making the all new model an extremely desirable package. Expect the reborn A-Class to heat up the premium hot hatch market even further. For further information on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class or to arrange a test drive, contact Coastal Automotive Centre, Bunbury on 9721 8199.

Toyota RAV4
Now with added diesel power!
It’s sometimes hard to believe that just a couple of decades ago, the family SUV market was merely in its infancy. Today, as one of the most competitive and congested sectors of the motoring industry, buyers have an almost daunting choice of models and specifications. So what was the catalyst for this huge explosion of interest? Well, for many it was the introduction of the Toyota RAV4 in 1994. Originally launched as a mini-SUV or crossover utility vehicle (CUV), the RAV4 (Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive), gave
buyers, for the first time, the advantages of a SUV combined with the fuel economy and versatility of a family saloon. It was the first car of its type that was just as comfortable off-road as it was parked outside the supermarket, families flocked to it! By the time the second generation RAV4 came along in 2000, it had overtaken the Honda CR-V as Australia’s biggest selling SUV and in 2005, the third generation RAV4 included a long wheel base version available to buyers down under. This dramatically increased

Offering a choice of almost a dozen different model variants, As you would expect from the RAV4 now features a “there’s a clever mix of a car originally based on diesel-powered version the Corolla, the all-new for the first time in the 20 retro and classy modern RAV4 continues to share year history of the car. design features with its touches” sibling. Mirroring the new Available in 6-speed auto edgier Corolla design, the 2013 RAV4 sports a or 6-speed manual in All Wheel Drive 2.0L petrol, 2.5L petrol, and 2.2L diesel versions, the new nose and more aggressive stance than the outgoing model and inside, unlike the entry level GX offers a high level of standard Corolla incidentally, there’s a clever mix of equipment. Features include auto headlights, retro and classy modern touches. Bluetooth, cruise control, seven airbags, However, it’s the introduction of the brand new diesel model, replacing the V6 petrol that has really set tongues wagging. Its frugal 16-valve, 2.2L turbo-diesel engine delivering 110kW of power and 340Nm of torque offers an impressive claimed combined fuel economy of 5.6L per 100km. With its precise steering and surefooted cornering abilities on-road, the automatic diesel also offers plenty of grunt off-road with all the grip and control expected of a vehicle in this class. With the diesel model now finally available in the range, together with the muchvaunted petrol variants, the all-new RAV4 will once again take some beating. Don’t Put Up With Neck and Shoulder Pain Any Longer Break the cycle now with acupuncture By Rebecca Haas
Research has shown that acupuncture is a highly effective treatment for relieving neck and shoulder pain. A study, done at the University of Oslo, reported a 70% decrease in pain intensity after 10 acupuncture treatments for office workers who reported chronic neck and shoulder pain. A three year follow-up showed that pain intensity was still lessened by half. Symptomatic relief is usually apparent from the very first treatment. This builds with subsequent treatments as part of a series to correct systemic imbalances and strengthen the body’s constitution. This holistic treatment modality treats the symptoms and addresses the root causes. As one of the easier musculoskeletal disorders to treat successfully with acupuncture, there are a number of benefits when using acupuncture for treating neck and shoulder pain. An acupuncturist will assess each patient individually for their specific problem but here are some common mechanisms for how it works:• Balances emotions Reduces stress, anxiety and calms the mind. Addressing this alone can greatly decrease one of the main causes of neck and shoulder pain. • Stimulates the release of endorphins These are the body’s own natural painkillers.
• Cumulative effects “Repeated acupuncture increases the effectiveness of the endorphin system, giving better results after each sequential treatment,” Dr Bruce Pomeranz, Neurophysiologist. • Reduces inflammation and relaxes muscles • Nourishes the sinews (tendons and ligaments) • Moves Qi (chi) and blood to relieve stagnation (a component of all pain conditions) • Increases local tissue circulation for faster healing • Treats the whole person Acupuncture will address the whole person, not just the neck and shoulders. The body is interconnected and tension from one area can create problems in others. Often, targeting and treating just the location of the pain does not relieve the tension in the surrounding muscle groups. This is particularly true when treating pain in the neck and shoulders. Acupuncture helps to relax the body and the mind. Stress has a profound effect on neck and shoulder pain development as it causes the muscles to become tense and a cycle is created. Acupuncture can help to break this cycle. Want to find out more? Contact Rebecca Haas at Qi Radiance, Dunsborough, on 9755 3571.

Reader Competition Win a Case of Award-Winning Wines from Cape Naturaliste Vineyard!
In this edition of The Busselton-Dunsborough Life, courtesy of Cape Naturaliste Vineyard, a mixed case of award-winning wines could be yours! Set in a picturesque valley behind Smiths Beach, off Caves Road, Yallingup, Cape Naturaliste Vineyard is a small boutique winery that consistently punches above its weight. With its first vines planted in 1997, over the past 16 years, owners Craig and Jennifer Brent-White have been the recipient of numerous awards and rave reviews for their three distinct brands of wine; The Cape Naturaliste Collection, Torpedo Rocks Collection and Reserve Collection. With an impressive tally of medals from Australian wine shows, as well as a number of favourable mentions in both Winestate Magazine and the James Halliday Wine Companion, the highlight for the winery to date has been a trophy win in London in 2011. At the International Wine & Spirit Competition, its Torpedo Rocks Cabernet Merlot 2009 took out Best Red from a Single Vineyard beating

Goanna Bush Café
Thankfully, in some ways, the choice was taken away from us. Duncan was keen for us to try the popular Pulled Pork Sandwich, a relatively recent addition to the menu, based on a dish created by the team for the Margaret River Gourmet Escape. Using free range ‘Big Red’ pork supplied by The Farmhouse, Margaret River, served up within a toasted bun, the dish features homemade BBQ sauce, corn salsa and lettuce accompanied by polenta chips with aioli. What a great choice! This fabulous dish was an absolute delight with perhaps, not unsurprisingly, the highlight being the pork itself. Braised at a low temperature and then cooked overnight with stock and vegetables, the moist, tender meat worked perfectly in combination with the soft roll, wonderful homemade sauce and fantastic polenta chips. Indeed, the sight alone of the meal prompted 2 lunchtime diners to ask us about the dish before ordering it for themselves! Available on the menu at just $20, we reckon you’ll be hard pressed to find a tastier lunchtime treat then this! And with the bar raised this high, we will certainly be back to try more selections on the menu! Offering a range of affordable, beautifully cooked, gourmet dishes, Goanna Bush Café comes highly recommended.
Set amongst attractive natural bushland, a short drive from Dunsborough, Goanna Gallery and Bush Café has been on our list of must-places at which to eat for some time. Maybe it’s the delicious smells that waft out of the kitchen every time we pop in for a coffee or perhaps it’s the growing reputation that chefs and business partners Duncan Timmons and Tim Meikle have been nurturing with their delicious homemade breakfast and lunchtime creations. Arriving for lunch, expectations were certainly high. Having worked together at a Michelin star winning restaurant in London, both Duncan and Tim’s culinary skills were certainly not in question but we were intrigued to see how these skills would be applied to a café-style lunch menu. On studying the menu, it’s clear that the team at Goanna have taken great pride in sourcing only the finest and freshest ingredients. There’s also a definite local feel to much of the food with plenty of dishes on both the breakfast and lunch menu showcasing local produce. So, what to have? For lunch, the menu, with its enticing combination of light snacks and more substantial fare, offered a tricky choice. Perhaps the Salt and Pepper Squid from the ‘Tapas Style Entrées’ or maybe the Malaysian Prawn Curry or Open Steak Sandwich from the ‘Main Plates’ section.

Restaurant Review
Dunsborough Chinese It’s fair to say that we enjoy our Chinese food at The Busselton-Dunsborough Life so when we were invited to sample the special lunch menu at Dunsborough Chinese, we certainly didn’t need a second invitation! Owned and operated by Joan and David Ngo, Dunsborough Chinese has been a fixture of the Dunsborough eating out scene for close on 20 years. And if the names behind the restaurant sound familiar, that’s because Joan and David, up until a few month ago, also owned Dynasty Chinese Restaurant in Busselton, a business they ran for 25 years. Now focusing on their Dunsborough eatery, it was clear from the amount of ex-Busselton customers arriving for lunch, that the drive to Dunsborough is not seen as a hindrance for some of the regulars! We began by sharing a Chicken and Sweetcorn Soup and Mixed Entrée Platter, featuring springs rolls, deep fried squid, deep fried king prawns and dim sum. This tasty soup and delicious selection of snacks was the perfect way to awaken the tastebuds for the selection of lunch specials on offer. For lunchtime diners, Dunsborough Chinese’s special lunchtime menu offers a fabulous choice of well-priced fare. Starting from just $10.50 per head, the options include a number of classic Chinese dishes such as Beef Chow Mein, Sweet and Sour Pork, Szechuan Chicken, Mongolian Beef and Chicken Chop Suey, and for fans of seafood, there is a selection of seafood specials, including Garlic King Prawns, Satay Squid and Sweet and Sour Fish from $14.50. Or simply choose from the range of house specials from $12.50 where you can enjoy Chilli Spare Ribs, Lemon Chicken and
Curry Lamb amongst other delights. Finally, there is a wide choice of noodle specials from $14 together with the popular, Malaysianinfluenced Mi Goreng and Mi Hokkien dishes. We were able to sample 3 separate dishes in all accompanied by a generous portion of Special Fried Rice. Our chicken dish was the fantastic Honey Chicken and we followed this with the excellent Sweet and Sour King Prawns before finishing with our favourite of the lot, a deliciously tender Satay Beef, providing the perfect combination of spice and flavour. Located at the top of the town (opposite Peko Peko), Dunsborough Chinese offers a great selection of well-cooked, value for money Asian dishes. It’s no wonder the regulars can’t stay away!

My Favourite Dish By Shana Rai, Bay Street Food, Dunsborough
Lawar At Bay Street Food we are passionate about the different types of street food found all over the world. It’s always been our aim to create delicious, authentic dishes that give our customers a glimpse into different styles of cuisine. Lawar is a traditional Balinese dish that is usually prepared for traditional ceremonies and weddings. Popular in restaurants around the island, the dish is created using a combination of vegetables, coconut and minced meat mixed with rich herbs and spices. The recipe we use was one given to me by my husband’s mother, Ketut Tanjung, and is full of fresh vegetables, coconut, chicken and Balinese spices. The flavours are out of this world! The spice pastes we use for this dish are all made from fresh ingredients, including lemongrass, chillies and lime, which are then blended with flaked coconut, Asian vegetables and warm shredded chicken. To top it off, we add crispy fried shallots to give the dish a delicious crunch.
The above dish is available at Bay Street Food, 12/26, Dunn Bay Road, Dunsborough. The café is open 7 days from 7am to 3pm. BYO only. 72

Winter Recipes Smoked Salmon Omelette
it is lightly coloured. Place the smoked salmon over just half of the omelette and use a spatula to fold over the other side to create a semicircle. Garnish with the parsley. Serve the omelette with the grilled tomatoes and toast. Delicious!
This metabolism boosting breakfast is sure to kick start your day. It’s high in protein, low in fat and steadily releases energy for whatever you have planned for the morning ahead. Or, for an indulgent brekkie (with the calories to match!), add a dollop of sour cream or mascarpone on top of the fish before you fold it over.
Ingredients
Honey and Mustard Chicken
(Serves 2) can of low cholesterol oil spray 6 egg whites 100g smoked salmon 4 slices of bread, toasted 2 tomatoes chopped continental parsley ground black pepper
Marinades are ideal for making a head start on lunch or dinner and, what’s more, marinated meat is always beautifully tender and rich in flavours. This recipe uses honey and Dijon mustard as its marinade base but you could always use wholegrain mustard, or add 1 tsp of paprika or ½ tsp chilli sauce for a fiery edge.
Ingredients
Method
(Serves 4) small bunch flat leaf parsley ½ cup Dijon mustard ½ cup runny honey 3 garlic cloves 2 tbsp olive oil salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 800g chicken thighs, skinned
Cut the tomatoes in half and grill under a high heat. Meanwhile, spray a shallow frying pan with the oil and heat over a medium/high heat. Whisk the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Season with black pepper and slowly pour into the pan. Gently mix with a wooden spoon and, with light pressure, press down on the mixture until

Apple Crumble Apple Crumble, perfect for get-togethers with friends or family, is an old favourite and a whole lot better when home-cooked rather than bought in from a supermarket’s frozen section. (Serves 8)
Ingredients For the filling 750g green apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced 1tbs lemon juice 100g caster sugar 1tsp ground cinnamon 3 tbs plain flour
For the crumble Method
225g plain flour 110g soft brown sugar 1tsp ground cinnamon 75g butter at room temperature
Place chicken thighs in an ovenproof dish. Place all other ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. Pour the marinade mixture over the chicken, cover with cling wrap and refrigerate for at least 1½ hours or overnight. Preheat the oven to 180˚C. Remove cling wrap and bake in the oven for 30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Serve with brown rice and a green salad. Enjoy!
Method Preheat oven to 180˚C. To make the filling, combine the apples, lemon juice, caster sugar, cinnamon and flour in an ovenproof dish. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, sugar and ground cinnamon. Rub in the butter using finger tips until the mixture is crumbly. Cover the apples with the crumble mixture. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown. This crumble is best enjoyed when warm or at room temperature. Serve with ice cream or warm custard. Try adding desiccated coconut or a little nutmeg to the crumble topping, or thawed frozen raspberries to the filling for delicious variations on this classic apple pudding. Naughty but nice! 76
