The latest fashion trends from The Bunbury Life’s resident fashion expert... little eccentricity too. Monochrome colours work well as do metallic tones. And, although fashion is currently all about clashing prints, pieces in a multi-tone print look best with a solid colour, sheer fabric layered on top, or alongside lace or leather. Another hot trend is the peplum, a reworked idea of the frill attached to skirts or jackets that was first seen over 200 years ago! It’s a feminine way to nip in the waist and add extra curves. Moving away from the traditional look, it’s exciting to see peplum inspired frills and structured shapes curving their way down blouses and jackets to wave at the hips. More focus on waists comes in the form of high waisted skirts. The skirts are coming in all shapes and lengths but they keep the idea of the curvy silhouette in mind. Tuck in the top or leave it out and add a belt to keep the waist cinched in. As it’s spring, shorts are back! Sharp tailored, high waisted shorts, which are short but also have a chic look with a blazer and satin or sheer top. They look sassy too in silk or leather with a subtle flared cut Honey & Beau to the leg. at 43rd on Stephen

With the promise of summer around the corner, spring is the season of bright ideas and new fashion thrills. And, just like the bursting buds shouting out ‘springtime’ around us, colour is splashing out of stores and onto the streets. Yellow is the primary colour in which to be noticed this season. It dictates hope, excitement and fun and will be seen in varying intensities from sorbet lemon, through to citrus and neon. As for wearing it, look to find the shade that suits your skin before deciding how far to go. For a bold look, team neon yellow with cobalt blue or tangerine and focus on a clean line to the outfit to create a striking effect rather than a confusion of ideas. Gentler citrus, primrose, mustard and pastel shades are around too in delicate chiffon and sheer fabrics, perfect for creating a monochrome outfit. If you don’t want to commit to a whole outfit in this bright trend, just add a bag, belt, headscarf or heels in yellow or a lick of neon polish to your nails. As well as the array of yellows around this season, spring is also very much about pastels. Colours reminiscent of meringue, sugar coated almonds and sorbets. Lilac, blue, mint, peach, lemon and pink are fabulous as a foil to a neon yellow but make for a great look on their own too. Look out for skinny ankle-skimming jeans in a pastel shade together with a billowy sheer top. Finish off with wedge heels, a spring must-have, or ballet flats, and avoid strappy sandals as they make the outfit look too fussy. Then choose a nail polish in a milkshake colour. Prints have not been forgotten and this season it is the multi-tone print that is taking off. Not prints with a regular repeated pattern but those with an abstract flow of colour and movement. It’s an individual look and adds a 8

It’s one of the reasons why we all love living in WA – enjoying the glorious outdoors and spending time outside in our own private havens. So with spring and another hot summer just around the corner, there’s no better time than now to start planning your luxurious outdoor space. Indoor Beach Volleyball Meet the team at Bunbury Indoor Beach Volleyball Centre

In the previous issue of The Bunbury Life, we discovered the sport of indoor beach volleyball. This time, it’s time to meet the team behind the centre. Daryl and Helen Simpson, owners of Bunbury Indoor Beach Volleyball Centre, have certainly not followed the traditional route of business ownership. A happily married couple of close to 30 years with 3 grown up children, their dream of owning a business in the south west of WA has involved more than just a few stopovers along the way. The couple started out in Wollongong, NSW, where Daryl, at the age of 27, completed his engineering degree. After landing a job at BHP, the couple moved the family across to the other side of the country to Port Hedland. Staying for two and a half years, another opportunity arose in Newman whereupon the family spent another three years in the tropical north west. At this point, they had decided to return to Wollongong but quickly realised that Western Australia was the place they wanted to be. Their next choice was Bunbury and Daryl soon found himself an engineer’s job at Worsley. The original plan was for Helen to run the centre with the help of their three children and a senior player. As the centre began to get busier and more popular, it soon became apparent that extra help was going to be needed. It was at this point that Daryl made the life changing decision to leave his job at Worsley and focus full time on the centre. Family businesses can be challenging at the best of times and Helen readily admits that they are still getting used to one another and

the different ways in which they do things. However, with their oldest daughter, Jade, now married and living in Tom Price, their younger daughter, Renee, living in Geraldton with her partner, and their son Kyle, a fly in fly out worker, Daryl and Helen have pulled together to create a highly successful, vibrant hub of activity. The centre runs weekly competitions five nights a week for men, ladies and juniors as well as a regular Tuesday morning social round with a child friendly set up. Each year, ten teams from the centre compete in the state-wide super league competition with other WA centres – often with much success. During the year, local businesses compete in a corporate cup challenge designed to encourage friendly competition and team building amongst staff and regular fun days are held where different variations of the game are played. Both youth groups and school groups are also regular visitors. For the first time last year, the centre hosted the Australia-wide nationals competition with over eighty teams from around the country competing against each other over a weekend. This annual event is one of the most prestigious in the indoor beach volleyball calendar and is a testament to the reputation that the Bunbury centre has now achieved in the sport. Learning to Fly

Choosing the right instructor

Learning to fly is one of life’s most rewarding challenges and invokes a wide range of diﬀerent emotions in people. For those that achieve their goal, and whether the aim was initially to fly for fun or for a career, one thing is for sure – a newly qualified pilot’s life will never quite be the same again. For those considering flight training, it is important to remember the commitment involved. As well as the expense, it will also require a considerable amount of time spent both in and out of the aeroplane working towards each stage. The chosen flight instructor will play a huge part in this success (or failure) and it is vitally important from the outset that the student both trusts and feels at ease with the instructor. Both parties will spend an awful lot of time sitting in very close proximity to each other as well as plenty of additional time going through debriefings. A breakdown in a relationship between the two is often the main reason for the noncompletion of a course. So how do you ensure you choose the right instructor? Well firstly, just as checklists are one of the most important facets of flying, this same procedure can be applied to finding the flying school and instructor. Start by defining your exact goals. What do you want to achieve from your training, will you study full time or part time and where do you want to be based? What’s your budget, what facilities are you after and will you buy or rent a plane? Having chosen your school, it’s now time to choose the instructor. With the long hours to be spent together, it is important that you feel

comfortable with any potential instructor. You will also want to be confident that, as well as being knowledgeable, the pilot can efficiently and effectively relate that knowledge in a practical, easy-to-follow manner. It’s also important that you enjoy spending time with your instructor - a feeling that should be reciprocated. Don’t be afraid to question their qualifications and the average time it takes one of their students to achieve the various levels of proficiency. Is the instructor enthusiastic and relates well to other students? Ask other students for their thoughts and check that the instructor is readily available at the times you want to learn. Many instructors are aspiring airline pilots and may well be applying for a job during your course. Ideally you do not want to be learning under two or three different instructors although, having said that, during training it is occasionally worth flying with a different pilot to get a fresh perspective on your development. Remember, much of your enjoyment and ultimately your success will boil down to your choice of instructor. Make sure you make a careful, considered choice. Rated by Australian Golf Digest magazine as one of the top five Western Australian courses outside the Perth metropolitan area, this Murray Dawson designed 18-hole course features broad fairways winding through beautiful woodland. In 2001, a new irrigation system was installed to allow the course to be fully reticulated with recycled town water. Capel Golf Club Located in Stratham, between Busselton and Bunbury, this country course has a long history. Originally established in 1928, the course finally located to its present location in 1964. Situated on relatively flat terrain, this 18-hole course is surrounded by an abundance of tuart, jarrah, banksia and peppermint trees and is home to a number of annual events. Meet 2 of Bunbury’s skating success stories. Students of Coach Susan Brooks at The Rink, they are off to the World Championships in New Zealand in October.

Name - Ebony Cassady, Age 18 How long have you been skating and what prompted you to start? I have been skating for 11 years this year. My mum took me to a general session at The Rink and as soon as I saw the artistic skaters begin their training I decided I wanted to be as good as them. I started skating classes the following week. With Susan Brooks as my coach, The Rink and skating have been a huge part of my life and now I’m working here!

Name - Allira Hanczakowski, Age 18 How long have you been skating and what prompted you to start?

What do you enjoy most about the sport?

13 years now! I visited the skating rink with my family and just kept going back for more! I don’t think my parents anticipated that this one trip would turn into such a big commitment in my life. I don’t remember much of it but I have grown up with skating as a big part of my life.

I enjoy the challenges and rewards from achieving the goals I set. As well as being a social sport, skating teaches life skills and helps participants to understand their strengths and weaknesses.

What are your personal highlights so far?

How long have you skated at The Rink?

Over the past 11 years, like any other athlete, I have been through ups and downs in competitions and through injury. However, I have always tried to learn from those moments and improve as a person and as an athlete. My highlights would include - 2005, my first year competing at the state championships and being selected to represent my state at the nationals; 2008, winning the Oceania Championships in my grade; 2011, winning the Junior International Solo Dance and being selected to represent Australia at the World Championships; 2012, winning the Junior International Solo Dance for the second time and again being selected to represent Australia at the World Championships.

Since it opened, in 1999.

What do you enjoy most about the sport? It’s such a unique sport, diﬀerent to all the others I tried while growing up. I love the opportunities that come along with the sport, like travelling the world and meeting amazing people.

What are your personal highlights so far?

What are your ambitions in the sport?

Going to my first world championships. It was a diﬀerent world, a side of sport that I had never seen before. Then to place 14th was an extra highlight! Being amongst world class athletes for the first time was an amazing moment.

To continue to skate, train and compete to the best of my ability. To finish my competition career on a high whilst gaining more insight into other areas of the sport, such as coaching and judging.

I plan to continue to try to move up the ranks at the World Championships. Also, to expand my knowledge of the sport through travel whilst doing what I love.

What are your ambitions in the sport?

What makes this story more addictive as it is read is the honesty and real life humour of Odd Thomas. Bunbury-based harpist Helen Punch is a classically trained pianist and flautist who decided to focus on the harp some 20 years ago. Originally a flautist with the Western Australian Youth Orchestra, Helen is now the harpist for the South West Philharmonic Orchestra. As a soloist, Helen has played during events at the Perth Convention Centre, Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, St Boniface Cathedral and at numerous venues and locations throughout the south west and great southern regions. Her love of the instrument is born out of the unique and distinctive atmosphere created by its sound. Traditionally associated with romance, classical music and Celtic music, the harp is the perfect instrument for creating a relaxed, gentle ambience whilst blending into the background at informal or formal gatherings. When required, it can also create a focal point of attention and is a great addition to wedding ceremonies and family celebrations. Helen is currently the proud owner of 3 magnificent harps. Firstly, a Salvi Juno harp with 27 strings. This is a portable instrument ideal for portraying Elizabethan or Medieval music. quality work and integration of traditional and new technological advancements. This is a stunning instrument both aesthetically and through its sound and tone! 29th September – 1st October After the huge success of the very first Bunbury Kidsfest, held last year at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre, the hands-on family festival is back in 2012, bigger and better! To be held at a huge new site at the Bunbury Recreation Ground in a large marquee village, the event takes place during the term 3 school holidays on the long weekend of 29th September to 1st October. Headlining the event are the ten young stars from Channel Ten’s Young Talent Time Show, who will be performing three shows a day on all three days. The event also features eight fantastic activity zones, including Science, Under 5’s, Physical Activity, Animals, Creative Kids, Construction, Kids’ Kitchen and the Festival Theatre. Highlights will include family favourites Alvin and the Chipmunks, a short film festival for kids created by CinefestOZ, a vegetable gardening workshop, Scitech shows and more. There will also be plenty of new hands-on activities for kids to try, including the Moove It Milking Station where they can learn to milk a life

size dairy cow. The festival will include a number of family friendly features such as free car parking, a parenting room, a grassed picnic area and a huge pram parking area. Could You Beneﬁt from Reﬁnancing? By Theo Krinos

Welcome to my latest column for The Bunbury Life. I write this article just a matter of days after the latest Reserve Bank meeting on interest rates from which it appears that rates may now be on hold for the foreseeable future. Two rate cuts over the last few months, totalling three-quarters of one per cent, seem to have satisfied the board for now. But what about borrower satisfaction? The Reserve Bank may have cut rates by 0.75% but very few borrowers will have had that rate cut passed on in full. In light of this, many will feel that the time has come to shop around for a better deal. However, before refinancing debts or switching lenders in reaction to your bank’s interest rate policy, a word of warning. Shopping around is always a good thing but remember, it’s always important to take your time and think carefully before making any new financial commitments. Borrowers will often be attracted to a new lender through what appears to be a highly competitive interest rate. Of course, the interest rate is often not the whole story when it comes to the actual cost of the loan over the term. Your current lender may enforce a fee for changing

lenders and your new loan may include some hefty charges just for setting it up. Make sure you do your homework! It’s also important to seek out sensible, balanced advice. For example, going directly to a bank will mean talking to an employee of that organisation who is there to solely recommend one of his own products. This may not necessarily be the best deal for you. A finance broker, on the other hand, will not only review your needs but will also have access to a wide selection of loans available from both bank and non-bank lenders thus ensuring the best possible deal for your circumstances. Get the right advice and find the right product and you could be paying significantly lower loan repayments. It could also be possible to consolidate other personal debts such as credit cards, store cards and car loans to save thousands of dollars in interest per annum. Or, even better, you could be helping to turn the equity in your home into cash or accessible funds that could be used towards building your dream home or for investment purposes. How to avoid mistakes when claiming deductions

Ensure that a logbook is regularly completed and that receipts are kept. Logbooks can be purchased from your local post oﬃce. Incorrect claims relating to deductions for the carrying of bulky equipment are a common problem. While the costs of travelling between work and home are usually not deductable, if you have to carry bulky equipment to and from work, you might be able to claim a deduction. However, the requirement for a large tool box to be attached to your motor vehicle doesn’t necessarily mean you’re eligible for a deduction. According to the ATO, the following must apply before a valid deduction can be considered:• Your employer requires you to carry equipment (for example, heavy tools) as part of your job and expects you to provide this equipment. • There are no security storage solutions at work for your equipment. • The equipment is associated with your work activities. Generally, taxpayers need to be certain that their deductions for work-related expenses are valid. Part of this includes having the right documentation to substantiate any claims for deductions. The sensible option is to safely keep all receipts for items that might be eligible for claiming a deduction. Run these by your accountant when getting your income tax return done at year end. The accountant will be best placed to decide on what is deductible or not. Work-related expenses are some of the most commonly claimed tax deductions each year. Millions of dollars are regularly claimed with car expenses and travel expenses being some of the most commonly claimed areas. However, as with many tax deductions, exactly what is allowable can often be confusing. According to the ATO, one of the most common mistakes is to provide insuﬃcient documentation in support of a claim. This relates in particular to motor vehicle and travel expenses claims. Typical errors include failing to correctly maintain a vehicle log book and not keeping proper receipts for actual travel expenses.

Travel Expenses If travel is an essential part of your job, and you have a travel allowance, you may be eligible to claim a tax deduction for your travel expenses. The ATO recommends that receipts are kept for travel expenses unless the following apply:• It’s reasonable to expect that your allowance will cover accommodation and other expenses incidental to the travel. • The travel expenses are equal to or less than the reasonable allowance amount. Note that the ATO sets the reasonable allowance amounts for domestic and overseas travels in an annual taxation determination. So if travel expenses exceed the annual reasonable allowance set by the ATO, you’ll need to have receipts to substantiate your entire deduction.

Mercedes-Benz Sleek new B-Class premium compact hits the streets!

Launched in 2005 and labelled by MercedesBenz as a Compact Sports Tourer, the original incarnation of the B-Class was designed to slot into the range as a larger sibling of the A-Class. First seen some 8 years earlier, the A-Class had, of course, been the first ever small, front-wheel drive vehicle from Mercedes-Benz. Packaged as a mini MPV, it represented a huge step down in size for the luxury car manufacturer as well as revealing an unexpected upright look. Fast forward to 2012 and the concept behind the original A and B-Class now appears even more relevant. In today’s economic climate, small, fuel eﬃcient cars are big business and with rivals, such as the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series all clamouring for a slice of this lucrative cake, it’s no surprise that Mercedes-Benz has come up with an

all-new, radically improved version of the car. Sporting new eye-catching looks, the improvements to the B-Class are, however, far from just cosmetic. This re-worked B-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz to sit on an all new chassis that has been specifically designed to carry the next generation of soon to be released Mercedes-Benz small cars. Excitement within the company is high and CEO Dieter Zetsche was recently even moved to comment that no Mercedes-Benz in history has ever débuted so much new technology in one package. So how else does it diﬀer? Well for starters, the all new B-Class is wider, lower, longer and sleeker than its predecessor, adopting more than a few styling features from its Mercedes-Benz stable mates. With its

Skoda Fabia RS Performance and style have never been so attainable!

It might be the smallest model in the 5-strong Skoda family but this hot hatchback is certainly intent on getting itself noticed. Initially available here in two diďŹ&#x20AC;erent versions, as the entry level Fabia hatch and the special edition Monte Carlo, Skoda has recently made the flagship of the range, the exciting Fabia RS, available to Australian buyers. We at The Bunbury Life were lucky enough to take it for a spin! Sharing some similar exterior features with its bigger brother, the Skoda Octavia, as you would expect from a car that has been built in conjunction with VW, the Fabia RS also displays plenty of characteristics from some of the smaller Volkswagens - in particular the locally available Polo range with which it shares the same drive-train. The Fabia RS has also broadened its appeal by being made available as both a hatchback and a wagon. The first thing immediately noticeable about the Skoda Fabia RS is its stylish looks. With its distinctive RS badge displayed across both

The claimed adrenalin pumping top speed of around 220 km/h, however, was sadly not put to the test! In short, the Fabia RS was a lot of fun to drive and we thoroughly enjoyed the 7-speed automatic dual-clutch DSG gearbox with paddle shift, which allowed us to shift gears whilst still in full control of the wheel. We also found the mid-range poke of the engine incredibly responsive with the car displaying a real liveliness between 2500-3500rpm. It was also nice to know that safety levels on the Fabia RS had a reassuringly strong Volkswagen influence with the car featuring six airbags, electronic stability control as well as a five-star crash rating. Available at $27,990 for the RS Hatch and $29,990 for the RS Wagon, the Fabia RS is great fun to drive, looks fabulous and oďŹ&#x20AC;ers extraordinary value for money. This means avoiding foods that have been cooked at over 60 degrees Celsius. The idea is to consume foods that contain more life force within them. Having done some research on vitamin and mineral absorption, I have concluded that although high heats do indeed destroy some vitamins it is not the case with all and some foods are made easier to digest with moderate heating. In my view, it is a wise person that covers all bases and has some raw unadulterated food for the obvious benefits. The good news is that many progressive cafés in the region now have raw food choices so it is easy to give it a go and try it yourself. Almond milk, for example, is promoted in the region and is delicious in fruit smoothies. Raw food dishes (assuming they don’t contain honey) also suit those on vegan and dairy free diets. Spring Speedy Recipe

food & wine Broccoli is one of the super foods, a term often banded around when we are talking about health and wellbeing. Super foods have been found to be highly superior to other types of food because of their nutritional benefits. This recipe makes it easy to enjoy broccoli’s antioxidants, high fibre content, vitamin C and beta carotene (an antioxidant that’s converted to vitamin A in the body). To retain even more nutrients from the broccoli, try steaming it instead of adding it to the boiling water. Then simply add to the cooked pasta. For a more filling alternative, gently cook sliced chorizo with the garlic.

Broccoli Pasta

Method In a large pot, bring salted water to the boil. When the water is boiling, add pasta and broccoli until pasta is al dente. Reserve approximately 1 cup of the water and drain pasta and broccoli. Using the same pot, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and add garlic until it starts to colour. Reduce the heat and return the pasta and broccoli to the pot. Mix well with another tablespoon of olive oil, grated Parmesan, chilli flakes and salt and pepper to taste. Break up larger pieces of broccoli. Add a little of the saved pasta water and combine to the mixture. Add more of the water according to your desired consistency. Serve with the shaved Parmesan on the side.

rule book. We are a nation influenced by many diﬀerent cultures and as such are not so hung up over historical behaviours or national dishes. There’s a free spirit in the kitchens and cellars in many parts of Australia that drives adventure and discovery, meaning that it’s important not to get too hung up on issues, such as the colour of wine when trying to complement a dish. There is, however, a strong argument to match food and wine from the same region. It’s no secret that some of the best cuisine in the world happens in some of the finest winegrowing regions. Places where wine is often extremely prevalent in the cooking process. Ultimately, it comes down to two schools of thought - complement or contrast. The complement approach is all about striking a harmony between the flavours and textures on the plate and in the glass or matching the weight of the wine, whether full, medium or light-bodied, to the weight of the dish. An example of this would be to serve a full-bodied Shiraz with a grilled fillet of beef. The contrast approach operates under the premise that opposites attract and brings together food and wine that have contrasting traits to aim to strike a balance of flavour intensity and texture through their interaction. An example of this is to match a crisp, acidic Sauvignon Blanc with a fish served with a creamy lemon sauce. The idea here is that the crisp acidity of the wine

serves as a contrast that can cut through the creaminess of the sauce to give a refreshing sensation to the palate. Of course, if you are to regularly choose the right food and wine combinations successfully, an understanding of the basic tastes of wine, i.e. sweet, bitter and sour, is highly important. Quite often, much of what we believe to be the taste is in fact the aromas of the wine, such as floral, fruit or spice. And aside from the basic taste of wine, the weight and intensity, or texture of a wine is another important factor in food and wine pairing. Plus, don’t forget, the best match should always be a personal preference. Enjoy sampling lots of diﬀerent combinations until you find ones that you are happy with. In short, the best choice will be the one that pleases your palate the most.
