Spring Fashion Cascades of colour

Stephanie Says…

The latest fashion trends from The Bunbury Life’s resident fashion expert... little eccentricity too. Monochrome colours work well as do metallic tones. And, although fashion is currently all about clashing prints, pieces in a multi-tone print look best with a solid colour, sheer fabric layered on top, or alongside lace or leather. Another hot trend is the peplum, a reworked idea of the frill attached to skirts or jackets that was first seen over 200 years ago! It’s a feminine way to nip in the waist and add extra curves. Moving away from the traditional look, it’s exciting to see peplum inspired frills and structured shapes curving their way down blouses and jackets to wave at the hips. More focus on waists comes in the form of high waisted skirts. The skirts are coming in all shapes and lengths but they keep the idea of the curvy silhouette in mind. Tuck in the top or leave it out and add a belt to keep the waist cinched in. As it’s spring, shorts are back! Sharp tailored, high waisted shorts, which are short but also have a chic look with a blazer and satin or sheer top. They look sassy too in silk or leather with a subtle flared cut Honey & Beau to the leg. at 43rd on Stephen

With the promise of summer around the corner, spring is the season of bright ideas and new fashion thrills. And, just like the bursting buds shouting out ‘springtime’ around us, colour is splashing out of stores and onto the streets. Yellow is the primary colour in which to be noticed this season. It dictates hope, excitement and fun and will be seen in varying intensities from sorbet lemon, through to citrus and neon. As for wearing it, look to find the shade that suits your skin before deciding how far to go. For a bold look, team neon yellow with cobalt blue or tangerine and focus on a clean line to the outfit to create a striking effect rather than a confusion of ideas. Gentler citrus, primrose, mustard and pastel shades are around too in delicate chiffon and sheer fabrics, perfect for creating a monochrome outfit. If you don’t want to commit to a whole outfit in this bright trend, just add a bag, belt, headscarf or heels in yellow or a lick of neon polish to your nails. As well as the array of yellows around this season, spring is also very much about pastels. Colours reminiscent of meringue, sugar coated almonds and sorbets. Lilac, blue, mint, peach, lemon and pink are fabulous as a foil to a neon yellow but make for a great look on their own too. Look out for skinny ankle-skimming jeans in a pastel shade together with a billowy sheer top. Finish off with wedge heels, a spring must-have, or ballet flats, and avoid strappy sandals as they make the outfit look too fussy. Then choose a nail polish in a milkshake colour. Prints have not been forgotten and this season it is the multi-tone print that is taking off. Not prints with a regular repeated pattern but those with an abstract flow of colour and movement. It’s an individual look and adds a 8

It’s something us girls don’t like. Numbers! How old we are, how many male friends we have had (!) ... and telling our partners how many shoes are in our closet. But I have a magical number you will love. Five. Five key looks in shoes for spring and summer that will get your shoe heart a-racing. And of course, all available at ShoeBeDoo...

PRETTY: C’mon, we all wanna be! So start with your feet care of quirky new brand Bed of Roses with cherry printed textile pumps, flower adorned peep toe slingbacks from Sojo, and top it off with a printed bag from Spencer & Rutherford. METALLIC: Apply the Midas touch to your footwear and go for gold with embellished flats from Misano or glittering strappy evening sandals from Kosheen.

So, loving your numbers yet???

cooker or storage cupboard to make best use of available space and thereby allowing the room to flow. Plus other design ideas may be suggested, such as a walk-in scullery, which keeps the open plan feel of the kitchen, reduces clutter and allows for better interaction with family and guests. Currently, customising is big news for kitchens as homeowners are becoming more and more adventurous with their cooking. Look out for cooktops, for example, that incorporate a barbecue or a teppanyaki plate. Or locate a small fridge in the island so that contents of the usual fridge no longer have to compete with beer and wine. Integrated appliances with their cabinet-like frontages matching the rest of the kitchen are becoming increasingly popular and help give the room a streamlined, consistent look. Or to inject some personality, consider adding a unique splashback. Ensure that the material used is heatproof and waterproof and choose from colour-backed glass, ceramic tiles, mosaics, stainless steel, granite and even etched glass, which gives a continental bistro feel to the kitchen. High gloss white is still the most popular colour for kitchens but following closely behind is the addition of cupboard doors painted dark chocolate or featuring darker tones of natural wood. This adds depth and cont. pg 30

The Kitchen

Creating a kitchen to suit every requirement is no easy task. It should be functional, practical and inviting so, when renovating, the first thing to do is work out the area’s intended uses. Today, kitchens are not only for preparing meals, but also for entertaining, relaxing and spending time with family. Think about your current kitchen and which aspects of it work well and which do not. This will help determine the purpose of the room and focus research on the new look. Next, scour magazines, websites and show homes, collecting cuttings and photos that inspire. A mood board or scrapbook of ideas provides a handy point of reference for designs and features to be included. Then measure the available space and prepare a floor plan to scale. This will give an insight into how to divide up areas for dierent requirements, such as space for storage, food preparation or dining. Having a floor plan also helps to determine which size table may fit or whether that huge dream fridge will squeeze into its allocated slot. There are plenty of companies that can help to work out a kitchen layout best suited to a particular lifestyle. Advice is oered on the ideal place for a sink, 28

contrast to the room making it easier to accentuate features, such as a beautiful high quality stone benchtop. Adding a bulkhead in a complementary tone to flooring or cupboards provides a frame to the cabinetry. It’s also becoming popular to add accent colours not only with small appliances but on

a larger scale, such as with a brightly coloured fridge. Or opt for a feature wall in Pantone’s design colour of the year, tangerine. Pendant lighting over the benchtop brings the whole look of the kitchen together, adding a touch of individuality. 30

It’s one of the reasons why we all love living in WA – enjoying the glorious outdoors and spending time outside in our own private havens. So with spring and another hot summer just around the corner, there’s no better time than now to start planning your luxurious outdoor space. It’s easy to drink in the atmosphere if you have a perfect outdoor sanctuary. So how do you create one? Well, a good starting point is to take a step back and think how you might be using the area. How will you need to furnish it? Will it be an area primarily used for dining, entertaining family and friends or simply just for relaxing? It could be that you need to create a child-friendly living space or it could be an area that needs to be set up around a sparkling pool or spa. Once the purpose of the space has been established then you can zone in on features that will work for you. Look for furniture that you know you will use and stick with styles, i.e. traditional or contemporary that already work well for you in the home. The best outdoor areas work seamlessly with the indoor areas of the home creating a flow from the inside of the property to the outside. Think about the ideal colour 32

Indoor Beach Volleyball Meet the team at Bunbury Indoor Beach Volleyball Centre

In the previous issue of The Bunbury Life, we discovered the sport of indoor beach volleyball. This time, it’s time to meet the team behind the centre. Daryl and Helen Simpson, owners of Bunbury Indoor Beach Volleyball Centre, have certainly not followed the traditional route of business ownership. A happily married couple of close to 30 years with 3 grown up children, their dream of owning a business in the south west of WA has involved more than just a few stopovers along the way. The couple started out in Wollongong, NSW, where Daryl, at the age of 27, completed his engineering degree. After landing a job at BHP, the couple moved the family across to the other side of the country to Port Hedland. Staying for two and a half years, another opportunity arose in Newman whereupon the family spent another three years in the tropical north west. At this point, they had decided to return to Wollongong but quickly realised that Western Australia was the place they wanted to be. Their next choice was Bunbury and Daryl soon found himself an engineer’s job at Worsley. The original plan was for Helen to run the centre with the help of their three children and a senior player. As the centre began to get busier and more popular, it soon became apparent that extra help was going to be needed. It was at this point that Daryl made the life changing decision to leave his job at Worsley and focus full time on the centre. Family businesses can be challenging at the best of times and Helen readily admits that they are still getting used to one another and

the different ways in which they do things. However, with their oldest daughter, Jade, now married and living in Tom Price, their younger daughter, Renee, living in Geraldton with her partner, and their son Kyle, a fly in fly out worker, Daryl and Helen have pulled together to create a highly successful, vibrant hub of activity. The centre runs weekly competitions five nights a week for men, ladies and juniors as well as a regular Tuesday morning social round with a child friendly set up. Each year, ten teams from the centre compete in the state-wide super league competition with other WA centres – often with much success. During the year, local businesses compete in a corporate cup challenge designed to encourage friendly competition and team building amongst staff and regular fun days are held where different variations of the game are played. Both youth groups and school groups are also regular visitors. For the first time last year, the centre hosted the Australia-wide nationals competition with over eighty teams from around the country competing against each other over a weekend. This annual event is one of the most prestigious in the indoor beach volleyball calendar and is a testament to the reputation that the Bunbury centre has now achieved in the sport. For further information on the sport of indoor beach volleyball or hiring availability, contact Helen or Daryl at Indoor Beach Volleyball on 0488 113918 or 0400 900320. 36

Learning to Fly

Choosing the right instructor

Learning to fly is one of life’s most rewarding challenges and invokes a wide range of different emotions in people. For those that achieve their goal, and whether the aim was initially to fly for fun or for a career, one thing is for sure – a newly qualified pilot’s life will never quite be the same again. For those considering flight training, it is important to remember the commitment involved. As well as the expense, it will also require a considerable amount of time spent both in and out of the aeroplane working towards each stage. The chosen flight instructor will play a huge part in this success (or failure) and it is vitally important from the outset that the student both trusts and feels at ease with the instructor. Both parties will spend an awful lot of time sitting in very close proximity to each other as well as plenty of additional time going through debriefings. A breakdown in a relationship between the two is often the main reason for the noncompletion of a course. So how do you ensure you choose the right instructor? Well firstly, just as checklists are one of the most important facets of flying, this same procedure can be applied to finding the flying school and instructor. Start by defining your exact goals. What do you want to achieve from your training, will you study full time or part time and where do you want to be based? What’s your budget, what facilities are you after and will you buy or rent a plane? Having chosen your school, it’s now time to choose the instructor. With the long hours to be spent together, it is important that you feel

comfortable with any potential instructor. You will also want to be confident that, as well as being knowledgeable, the pilot can efficiently and effectively relate that knowledge in a practical, easy-to-follow manner. It’s also important that you enjoy spending time with your instructor - a feeling that should be reciprocated. Don’t be afraid to question their qualifications and the average time it takes one of their students to achieve the various levels of proficiency. Is the instructor enthusiastic and relates well to other students? Ask other students for their thoughts and check that the instructor is readily available at the times you want to learn. Many instructors are aspiring airline pilots and may well be applying for a job during your course. Ideally you do not want to be learning under two or three different instructors although, having said that, during training it is occasionally worth flying with a different pilot to get a fresh perspective on your development. Remember, much of your enjoyment and ultimately your success will boil down to your choice of instructor. Make sure you make a careful, considered choice. Seafarer Boats Gold Coast manufacturer goes from

spring into action! Founded by Aussie boating legend Doug Fry in 1957, Seafarer Boats are one of those most respected names in the business. Renowned for their range of fibreglass family and offshore sports boats, 50 years on, they continue to flourish under the leadership of Doug’s son, Lindsay, a highly skilled designer and boat builder. Acquired by The Haines Group in 2007, production has now been moved to Wacot, Queensland, and the company now numbers an impressive 15 models in the range. Being the first boat builder to introduce an Australian designed deep vee fibreglass hull, all Seafarer boats’ names have historically sported a ‘V’ at the start of their name. Many of these names will be familiar to boating enthusiasts around the country as some have been in production in various guises for decades. An extraordinary achievement considering the fierce competition in this market sector. One of the most popular craft in the range is the V-Sea. Originally known as the Venus, the boat was first introduced over 30 years ago as a 5 metre half-cabin sports fisher. Using the same hull, Lindsay then developed the idea of the cuddy cab V-Sea, a boat that became one of the largest selling Australian fibreglass fishing boats ever. Benefitting from a number of upgrades over the years, today the V-Sea still remains one of the most popular boats of its type. Currently, the Seafarer model range starts with the Vantage 4.85. This sturdy, practical boat with its soft, quiet ride is the ideal fisherman’s companion, offering plenty of space to move around, an ice chest, storage lockers and tons of storage space for fishing gear. The internal layout can be customised to suit and the boat can comfortably transport 5 adults. You’ll never want to get into a tinnie again!

strength to strength!

One of the best known models is the Victory 6.0. A member of the Seafarer family since the early days, its 6 metre overall length and 2.4 metre beam means it’s the perfect boat for those wanting that extra bit of room for their fishing mates and gear. With its deep vee hull, this boat loves offshore conditions and is more than capable of handling some of the toughest swells on offer. With a maximum load of 7 adults, the Victory 6.0 will provide plenty of great days out on the water. Finally, the current flagship of the range is the superb Voyager 6.8. Featuring a large, comfortable half cabin, it still manages to be a proper trench-style walk around while still comfortably transporting 8 adults. Plus, with the transom designed to accommodate a single or twin configuration outboard, there are loads of available power options. The Voyager also comes with an optional hard top, great for keeping the weather out and for allowing items, such as radios and speakers and switches, to be kept away from the dash. For further information on the Seafarer Boats range, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, or call 9721 3033.

Inline Skating at The Rink

Meet 2 of Bunbury’s skating success stories. Students of Coach Susan Brooks at The Rink, they are off to the World Championships in New Zealand in October.

Name - Ebony Cassady, Age 18 How long have you been skating and what prompted you to start? I have been skating for 11 years this year. My mum took me to a general session at The Rink and as soon as I saw the artistic skaters begin their training I decided I wanted to be as good as them. I started skating classes the following week. With Susan Brooks as my coach, The Rink and skating have been a huge part of my life and now I’m working here!

Ebony (left) and Allira (right) at The Rink

Name - Allira Hanczakowski, Age 18 How long have you been skating and what prompted you to start?

What do you enjoy most about the sport?

13 years now! I visited the skating rink with my family and just kept going back for more! I don’t think my parents anticipated that this one trip would turn into such a big commitment in my life. I don’t remember much of it but I have grown up with skating as a big part of my life.

I enjoy the challenges and rewards from achieving the goals I set. As well as being a social sport, skating teaches life skills and helps participants to understand their strengths and weaknesses.

What are your personal highlights so far?

How long have you skated at The Rink?

Over the past 11 years, like any other athlete, I have been through ups and downs in competitions and through injury. However, I have always tried to learn from those moments and improve as a person and as an athlete. My highlights would include - 2005, my first year competing at the state championships and being selected to represent my state at the nationals; 2008, winning the Oceania Championships in my grade; 2011, winning the Junior International Solo Dance and being selected to represent Australia at the World Championships; 2012, winning the Junior International Solo Dance for the second time and again being selected to represent Australia at the World Championships.

Since it opened, in 1999.

What do you enjoy most about the sport? It’s such a unique sport, different to all the others I tried while growing up. I love the opportunities that come along with the sport, like travelling the world and meeting amazing people.

What are your personal highlights so far?

What are your ambitions in the sport?

Going to my first world championships. It was a different world, a side of sport that I had never seen before. Then to place 14th was an extra highlight! Being amongst world class athletes for the first time was an amazing moment.

To continue to skate, train and compete to the best of my ability. To finish my competition career on a high whilst gaining more insight into other areas of the sport, such as coaching and judging.

I plan to continue to try to move up the ranks at the World Championships. Also, to expand my knowledge of the sport through travel whilst doing what I love.

What are your ambitions in the sport?

Book Reviews

Odd Apocalypse by Dean Koontz

What makes this story more addictive as it is read is the honesty and real life humour of Odd Thomas. As surreal as is the journey on which Odd Thomas finds himself, it becomes believably intriguing because of his wit and humanity. It would appear that, although Thomas sees troubled spirits of dead people and tries to bring them peace, he is just as normal as anyone. This, the fifth book of Koontz chronicling the supernatural experiences of Odd Thomas, centres on Roseland, a mansion, set in beautiful grounds and cut off from the outside world by high walls. On the invitation of Noah Wilflaw, the owner of Roseland, Thomas and a beguiling young and pregnant woman, Annamaria, become guests. Amidst the beauty and perfection of Roseland, Thomas discovers that his psychic skills are soon needed as he encounters spirits, raging beasts, deception and bizarre shifts of time. As he endeavours to find out more, Thomas unearths the complex, deadly and alarming secrets of the house. An old hand at delivering international bestsellers, Dean Koontz has not yet run out of ideas to spook, intrigue and satisfy the reader. Odd Apocalypse is a psychological supernatural thriller, written in Odd Thomas’ own candid words, compelling the reader to engage in his curiosity and confusion, anger and fear.

The Food Clock

by Fast Ed Halmagyi People who love cookery books will often not only refer to them for obvious culinary requirements but will often delve into them for the simple enjoyment of reading. Just like others would a novel, it is only the subject matter that differs. However, the latest offering from Fast Ed Halmagyi is a unique reading experience. It serves to entertain the reader with not only delicious ideas for dishes but also with a narrative that reappears in every cookery chapter and develops throughout the book. The story goes hand in hand with the recipes as it follows a year in the life of Monsieur Henri Petit-Pois and enlightens the reader about the food and drink delights that such a man would have enjoyed. Throughout the year, Henri has encounters and experiences, giving meaning and relevance to the food featured in the book. He selects ingredients that are fresh and seasonal, allowing the cooks in us to discover recipes that reconnect us to the changes of the season. The Food Clock presents recipes to take us through a whole year of seasonal delights. Food is wholesome and reminiscent of a time when people made good use of the delightful spoils that nature gave to them. The above books were supplied by Collins Booksellers, Bunbury. South-West Artisans Helen Punch

Bunbury-based harpist Helen Punch is a classically trained pianist and flautist who decided to focus on the harp some 20 years ago. Originally a flautist with the Western Australian Youth Orchestra, Helen is now the harpist for the South West Philharmonic Orchestra. As a soloist, Helen has played during events at the Perth Convention Centre, Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, St Boniface Cathedral and at numerous venues and locations throughout the south west and great southern regions. Her love of the instrument is born out of the unique and distinctive atmosphere created by its sound. Traditionally associated with romance, classical music and Celtic music, the harp is the perfect instrument for creating a relaxed, gentle ambience whilst blending into the background at informal or formal gatherings. When required, it can also create a focal point of attention and is a great addition to wedding ceremonies and family celebrations. Helen is currently the proud owner of 3 magnificent harps. Firstly, a Salvi Juno harp with 27 strings. This is a portable instrument ideal for portraying Elizabethan or Medieval music. Next, her 36 string Celtic lever harp delivers a sound suited to meditative and Celtic music. Manufactured by Robert Forrester of Forrest Works, a prolific craftsman who has been making individually handcrafted Lever Harps since the early 1970’s, the harp was crafted using a variety of timbers including Tasmanian blackheart sassafras and Huon pine, plus a small amount WA jarrah. The resulting tone is rich and deep. Finally, Helen is also the owner of a fabulous 47 string Salvi Diana grand concert harp, manufactured by Italian craftsman, Victor Salvi. A manufacturer of harps since 1954, his company is world-renowned for its high

quality work and integration of traditional and new technological advancements. This is a stunning instrument both aesthetically and through its sound and tone! Available to play at weddings, parties and corporate functions, Helen also teaches lever and pedal harp in Bunbury to all age groups and is able to provide harps for rental if required. Her CD ‘Just is…’ is currently on sale in selected music and bookshops in the south west. Helen is also now the exclusive distributer of Victor Salvi harps in Western Australia. The first shipment of harps is due to arrive in September or October of this year. Harps available will include a 27 string Juno, 34 string Mia, and 38 string Titan - perfect for beginners as well as more advanced players! Could You Benefit from Refinancing? By Theo Krinos

Welcome to my latest column for The Bunbury Life. I write this article just a matter of days after the latest Reserve Bank meeting on interest rates from which it appears that rates may now be on hold for the foreseeable future. Two rate cuts over the last few months, totalling three-quarters of one per cent, seem to have satisfied the board for now. But what about borrower satisfaction? The Reserve Bank may have cut rates by 0.75% but very few borrowers will have had that rate cut passed on in full. In light of this, many will feel that the time has come to shop around for a better deal. However, before refinancing debts or switching lenders in reaction to your bank’s interest rate policy, a word of warning. Shopping around is always a good thing but remember, it’s always important to take your time and think carefully before making any new financial commitments. Borrowers will often be attracted to a new lender through what appears to be a highly competitive interest rate. Of course, the interest rate is often not the whole story when it comes to the actual cost of the loan over the term. Your current lender may enforce a fee for changing

lenders and your new loan may include some hefty charges just for setting it up. Make sure you do your homework! It’s also important to seek out sensible, balanced advice. For example, going directly to a bank will mean talking to an employee of that organisation who is there to solely recommend one of his own products. This may not necessarily be the best deal for you. A finance broker, on the other hand, will not only review your needs but will also have access to a wide selection of loans available from both bank and non-bank lenders thus ensuring the best possible deal for your circumstances. Get the right advice and find the right product and you could be paying significantly lower loan repayments. It could also be possible to consolidate other personal debts such as credit cards, store cards and car loans to save thousands of dollars in interest per annum. Or, even better, you could be helping to turn the equity in your home into cash or accessible funds that could be used towards building your dream home or for investment purposes. Theo Krinos is Finance Manager at The Mortgage Gallery, Bunbury. Located at 32 Stirling Street, he can be contacted on 9791 4177 or email theokrinos@themortgagegallery.com.au 50

Tax Tips

How to avoid mistakes when claiming deductions

By Phil Di Candilo

Ensure that a logbook is regularly completed and that receipts are kept. Logbooks can be purchased from your local post office. Incorrect claims relating to deductions for the carrying of bulky equipment are a common problem. While the costs of travelling between work and home are usually not deductable, if you have to carry bulky equipment to and from work, you might be able to claim a deduction. However, the requirement for a large tool box to be attached to your motor vehicle doesn’t necessarily mean you’re eligible for a deduction. According to the ATO, the following must apply before a valid deduction can be considered:• Your employer requires you to carry equipment (for example, heavy tools) as part of your job and expects you to provide this equipment. • There are no security storage solutions at work for your equipment. • The equipment is associated with your work activities. Generally, taxpayers need to be certain that their deductions for work-related expenses are valid. Part of this includes having the right documentation to substantiate any claims for deductions. The sensible option is to safely keep all receipts for items that might be eligible for claiming a deduction. Run these by your accountant when getting your income tax return done at year end. The accountant will be best placed to decide on what is deductible or not. Phil Di Candilo is Director of RSM Bird Cameron Bunbury, part of a full service national accounting group delivering expert corporate financial and advisory accounting services to clients across diverse industry sectors. Contact him on 9722 5600.

Work-related expenses are some of the most commonly claimed tax deductions each year. Millions of dollars are regularly claimed with car expenses and travel expenses being some of the most commonly claimed areas. However, as with many tax deductions, exactly what is allowable can often be confusing. According to the ATO, one of the most common mistakes is to provide insufficient documentation in support of a claim. This relates in particular to motor vehicle and travel expenses claims. Typical errors include failing to correctly maintain a vehicle log book and not keeping proper receipts for actual travel expenses.

Travel Expenses If travel is an essential part of your job, and you have a travel allowance, you may be eligible to claim a tax deduction for your travel expenses. The ATO recommends that receipts are kept for travel expenses unless the following apply:• It’s reasonable to expect that your allowance will cover accommodation and other expenses incidental to the travel. • The travel expenses are equal to or less than the reasonable allowance amount. Note that the ATO sets the reasonable allowance amounts for domestic and overseas travels in an annual taxation determination. So if travel expenses exceed the annual reasonable allowance set by the ATO, you’ll need to have receipts to substantiate your entire deduction.

Motor Vehicle Expenses Again, always keep a detailed record of journeys undertaken and expenses incurred. 52

Meet ...

Local financial adviser, Jon Dixon If you had $500,000 to invest this year, would you choose the share market, property or cash? If I was 40 years of age, I would have $300,000 in a range of Australian shares with a large bias to mid-caps stocks like Iinet, Silver Lake, Tox Free and Thorn Group, $100,000 in Google, China Telecom, Nestlé and Microsoft, and I would use the extra $100,000 to use as a deposit towards a property in Perth to borrow against the SMSF. This would provide an aggressive long term fund to create wealth. If I was 65 and retiring, I would have $50,000 in cash, $50,000 in a 1 year term deposit, $50,000 in a 2 year term deposit, $150,000 in a range of Australian fixed interest and corporate debt income funds and the rest in high dividend Australian equities with a tight 10% stop/loss on the shares.

Jon has recently set up his own financial planning business, Dixon Financial Group, having previously been an adviser with Garvan Financial Planning.

Why the change to Dixon Financial Group? How have things changed for your clients? I Left Garvan to provide a more diverse product offering and a cheaper, more flexible client value proposition. In short, we are cheaper and better and now have the ability to really look after our clients’ money and not let investments sit in managed funds with inflexible fund managers and high fees. We want to be pro-active and if markets fall, we want to be able to move quickly to protect our clients’ investments. We set up Dixon Financial Group with the help and support of our licensee group, Ballast Financial Management, to provide what we feel is the best value proposition in the market place and I invite all to see what we have to offer.

Do you have one important tip for those looking to create long term wealth? Be contrarian! Buy when others are selling and sell when others are buying! Following the herd will be your biggest mistake! Another tip is the most basic of all and works 100% of the time. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it! This will save you a lot of money. Who cares if your mate has a boat or a flash car? Worry about your bank account and wealth not your ego!

Do you have access to any new products or services? Our new firm, Dixon Financial Group, offers a specialist Self-Managed Super Fund service to help with borrowing to buy property, a share trading system with stop loss protection that will sell out if shares fall to a predetermined price and a platform provision that allows the SMSF client to have all investments on one platform so that the fund value can be viewed any day of the week. Whether the client has gold bars at the Perth Mint, a bank account at CBA, a property in Brisbane or a self-managed share portfolio, the fund value can be viewed 24/7 and we then provide the accountant with the tax information to do the SMSF tax return.

How do you relax in your spare time? To relax in my spare time, I love to hang with my wife and three boys, read the paper or help my wife with a crossword. If I’m not playing or watching football with the boys, then having a surf with my best buddy, Bender, or my brother, Tim, would be on top of the cards. If the weather’s poor, then having a beer with Hoppy watching the football and a little punt on the nags sure is a great excuse for not mowing the lawn! Mercedes-Benz Sleek new B-Class premium compact hits the streets!

Launched in 2005 and labelled by MercedesBenz as a Compact Sports Tourer, the original incarnation of the B-Class was designed to slot into the range as a larger sibling of the A-Class. First seen some 8 years earlier, the A-Class had, of course, been the first ever small, front-wheel drive vehicle from Mercedes-Benz. Packaged as a mini MPV, it represented a huge step down in size for the luxury car manufacturer as well as revealing an unexpected upright look. Fast forward to 2012 and the concept behind the original A and B-Class now appears even more relevant. In today’s economic climate, small, fuel efficient cars are big business and with rivals, such as the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series all clamouring for a slice of this lucrative cake, it’s no surprise that Mercedes-Benz has come up with an

all-new, radically improved version of the car. Sporting new eye-catching looks, the improvements to the B-Class are, however, far from just cosmetic. This re-worked B-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz to sit on an all new chassis that has been specifically designed to carry the next generation of soon to be released Mercedes-Benz small cars. Excitement within the company is high and CEO Dieter Zetsche was recently even moved to comment that no Mercedes-Benz in history has ever débuted so much new technology in one package. So how else does it differ? Well for starters, the all new B-Class is wider, lower, longer and sleeker than its predecessor, adopting more than a few styling features from its Mercedes-Benz stable mates. With its

Performance-wise, the all new B-Class is offered with a range of petrol and diesel options all fitted with the new 7G-DCT 7-speed automatic gearbox. On the petrol front, a single 1.6L four-cylinder engine is available in three separate different guises. The B180 offers 90kW and 200Nm of torque, the B200 produces 115kW and 250Nm whilst the B250 petrol produces 155kw and 350nm. In diesel form, a four-cylinder common-rail direct-injected 1.8L engine delivers 100kW and 300Nm in the B200 CDI. Also expect in the not too distant future an AMG powered version of the car. With improved performance, stylish looks and market-leading safety features all available at a lower price than the outgoing car, the all new B-Class certainly is something to get excited about! curvaceous rear end and purposeful front end, it now takes many of its cues from the luxurious R-Class. Moving inside the cabin, the B-Class has also had a much improved makeover. The dashboard features a trio of SLS AMG-inspired circular vents and a large ‘three-dimensional’ decorative element running the length of the dash is available in Basic, Exclusive, Chrome and Sports trim levels. Mercedes-Benz’s new three-spoke steering wheel, available in performance models right up to the CLS, sits ahead of an instrument cluster with four round analogue displays and to the left of a TFT internet connected touchscreen display. The impressive array of safety features in the new B-Class includes a radar-based collision warning system and Adaptive Brake Assist as standard. Other well known Mercedes-Benz systems on offer include Attention Assist, Active Parking Assist and Hill Hold, along with a lengthy list of optional safety features.

Skoda Fabia RS Performance and style have never been so attainable!

It might be the smallest model in the 5-strong Skoda family but this hot hatchback is certainly intent on getting itself noticed. Initially available here in two dierent versions, as the entry level Fabia hatch and the special edition Monte Carlo, Skoda has recently made the flagship of the range, the exciting Fabia RS, available to Australian buyers. We at The Bunbury Life were lucky enough to take it for a spin! Sharing some similar exterior features with its bigger brother, the Skoda Octavia, as you would expect from a car that has been built in conjunction with VW, the Fabia RS also displays plenty of characteristics from some of the smaller Volkswagens - in particular the locally available Polo range with which it shares the same drive-train. The Fabia RS has also broadened its appeal by being made available as both a hatchback and a wagon. The first thing immediately noticeable about the Skoda Fabia RS is its stylish looks. With its distinctive RS badge displayed across both

the interior and exterior of the vehicle, the car comes complete with 17 Gigaro alloy wheels as standard (available in either silver, anthracite, black or white), a purposeful looking front grille, a chrome dual exhaust, a rear spoiler and a

on the road seats as standard. It’s also surprisingly spacious for a small car with easily enough room for 4 adults to be transported in comfort. An impressive list of standard features includes amongst others, an MP3 player with iPod connectivity, Bluetooth phone connection, a chilled glove box, climatronic auto-air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, split-folding rear seats and a multi-function trip computer. So to the fun bit! Somewhat hampered, of course, by the prevailing local speed limits we still managed to give the car a good workout. Powered by a twin charged dual fuel injection 132TSI engine producing 132kW, the Fabia RS claims to propel itself from 0-100 km/h in a little over 7 seconds and we had no reason to doubt those impressive figures. The claimed adrenalin pumping top speed of around 220 km/h, however, was sadly not put to the test! In short, the Fabia RS was a lot of fun to drive and we thoroughly enjoyed the 7-speed automatic dual-clutch DSG gearbox with paddle shift, which allowed us to shift gears whilst still in full control of the wheel. We also found the mid-range poke of the engine incredibly responsive with the car displaying a real liveliness between 2500-3500rpm. It was also nice to know that safety levels on the Fabia RS had a reassuringly strong Volkswagen influence with the car featuring six airbags, electronic stability control as well as a five-star crash rating. Available at $27,990 for the RS Hatch and $29,990 for the RS Wagon, the Fabia RS is great fun to drive, looks fabulous and oers extraordinary value for money. It will be the talk of the town before you know it! For more information on the Skoda Fabia RS or to arrange a test drive, contact Barbagallo Skoda Mandurah on 9587 9999 or visit their showroom at 140 Pinjarra Road.

whole host of paint choices and roof colours. The Fabia RS is certainly no shrinking violet and we gained plenty of inquisitive looks on the freeway during our drive. Get inside and the cabin takes much of its cue again from the Polo with an attractive, high-line RS instrument panel and sports

Can-Am Spyder RT

It was two and a half years ago that we first reported on the remarkable Can-Am Spyder in The Bunbury Life. Manufactured by Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), the same company behind the Sea-Doo PWC, the Skidoo snowmobile and the Evinrude range of E-tec powered boats, since then this highly innovative and stylish 3-wheel roadster has continued to see its popularity soar. With the open-air freedom of a motorcycle and the peace of mind of a luxury car, quite simply there is nothing quite like it on the road, a fact to which thousands of owners can testify. With its aggressive styling, impressive performance and unmistakable two-front and one-rear wheel set up, the Can-Am Spyder is quick, totally unique and bags of fun. Perfect for either riding solo or for a two-up touring vacation, this is adventurous travel at its very best. Since the launch of the Spyder five years ago, BRP has continued to raise the bar, both developing the brand and adding plenty of additional features and technologies. For 2012, they have done it again and the current line-up features 2 new and improved versions. The Can-Am Spyder RS, designed more for the solo rider, and the Can-Am Spyder RT Roadster, which is now available in 4 separate formats.

Revolutionary 3-wheel tourer gets update!

First launched in 2010, the RT is designed for full on two-up touring. As well as the basic model, the RT is now also available as the Spyder RT Audio and Convenience, Spyder RT-S, and Spyder RT Limited. Featuring Dynamic Power Steering (DPS), cruise control, 155 litres of on-board storage, an adjustable electric windshield, wind deflectors, heated grips, and a comfortable, supportive saddle, this luxurious roadster delivers a smooth, refined ride and plenty of practicality. Powered by the same Rotax 990cc v-twin engine, the trike produces 106HP at 8,50rpm and fuel consumption is a reported 8 litres per 100km. A 5-speed gearbox with foot shift and manual clutch comes standard on the basic Spyder RT roadster whilst a semi-automatic, five-speed with electronic transmission is available on all the other RT roadster models. For 2012 models, BRP has added a new multi-functional dot-matrix LCD display on all Can-Am Spyder RT roadster packages to improve the readability of gauges at night. Apart from the base Spyder RT roadster model, all Spyder RT packages are now also available in a range of new colour schemes and the RT Limited package has received lavish chrome accents, a seat upgrade and new aluminum six-spoke chrome front wheels. One thing’s for sure. It’s never dull on a Can-Am Spyder! For further information on the Can-Am Spyder range or to arrange a test drive, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, or call 9721 3033. 60

Beauty Talk

By Niobe Gulley

Coming out of winter, our skin is often dehydrated because of exposure to extreme weather conditions, temperatures and artificial heat. It can look dry and lack vitality. However, using the right products will deliver massive results, reenergising and reconditioning skin for a more radiant and vibrant complexion. Your skin will look ready for spring and summer. To achieve this, it is all about a balance. To ensure skin is at its perfect, glowing equilibrium you need to be aware of the particular areas of your skin that need particular care at certain times of the year. It is also recommended to seek the help of a highly trained beauty specialist to find out how to attain your skin’s individual balance. This expert can give you a personal and professional skin consultation in which they take the time to understand your skin. They will consider your age, skin type, occupation and lifestyle to design a programme to keep your skin consistently at its best. Within the programme, the specialist will recommend the most advanced and excellent science based skin care from the world’s leading brands. All skin needs good appropriate cleansers, superb gentle exfoliation, protecting and priming day moisturisers, regenerating and age-fighting night formulae and results driven treatments – including those for the neck. Not forgetting delicate skin around the eyes, which also requires its own specific moisturising cream. Using a professional skin consultation helps you determine which products are best for you.

Your specialist will also recommend certain proven products. Some of the following may well be on the list. To achieve beautiful skin try the range of Shiseido foam cleansers. Shiseido’s Benefiance Cleansing Foam targets ageing and is extra creamy so feels luxuriously indulgent on the skin. The skin around the eyes demands careful attention as it is thinner, less oily and more vulnerable and prone to repetitive stress. Expression lines are also formed more easily. Estée Lauder provides a range of eye creams that illuminate, hydrate, lift and firm to reduce the look of lines, all while protecting the delicate nature of the skin. For dark circles, Clinique has produced Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector, which has been clinically proven to reduce dark circles. Beauty experts often recommend a targeted repair serum, used before a daily moisturiser, in order to get the best visible long term results for your skin. Perfectionist (CP+R), Estée Lauder, is a wrinkle lifting and firming serum in high demand due to its ability to double the skin’s own collagen production in just one week. For night time skincare, Estée Lauder has developed their Advanced Night Repair Serum following amazing DNA research centred on understanding ‘clock genes’. Clinical studies show that skin gets better and better so by your next birthday you will actually be looking younger! Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room. Two destinations in one location in the Stirling Centre, Bunbury, for all your beauty needs. 62

Introducing ...

I2i Weight Loss Program

so that they can reach their target weight. It centres on hypnotherapy, a technique in which Kaaren Guelfi, who created the I2i program with Paula Bradley, is highly skilled. Kaaren became a registered nurse 33 years ago and has been committed to healing and helping the wellbeing of people ever since. Having travelled around the world over the years to develop her expertise in healing, Kaaren, now based in Bunbury, has developed an acclaimed reputation as a sought after holistic counsellor and healer. Her reputation for her spirituality, intuition and compassion draw people from all walks of life who are interested in improving various parts of their own lives. Within the I2i program, a weight loss specialist supports an individual through two sessions where every aspect of the client’s life is covered in order to rejuvenate the client from the inside out. The path to a new outlook and a healthier future is laid. The I2i Weight Loss Program is not a diet; it is an effective way to lose weight whilst still feeling great doing it. For further information on the I2i Weight Loss Program, contact Kaaren Guelfi on 0428 641057 or email a.kontheroad@hotmail.com

Losing weight for some is a constant battle. For many who attempt it it’s rarely the first time they have tried. Typically, people go in cycles of dieting and exercising followed by periods where the motivation wanes. The process basically becomes too much like hard work, we get distracted from our goals and the weight piles on again. Most people are not intrinsically lazy but they are very busy. We forget what our intentions were and the targets that we set as other seemingly more important things get in the way. There’s a reason why health gurus talk of a necessary ‘lifestyle change’ in order for weight loss and a healthy life to be sustained. The hard part is committing to that new lifestyle and investing in it whole heartedly without succumbing to inevitable excuses. Whatever your reason for wanting to lose weight, there now exists a sole solution to help you on your way to a healthy lifestyle – and sticking to it. The I2i Weight Loss Program is a unique and holistic method of helping individuals to realign every aspect of their lives 64

Personal Counselling Help is at hand

Many of us at some point in our lives will experience some form of stress or tension that will affect our daily equilibrium. However, in most cases, very few of us will openly discuss these personal issues which in turn can lead to the problems being exacerbated. A discussion with a professional counsellor can provide invaluable help to those feeling stuck, troubled, tense, frightened, stressed and unsure of themselves – providing help, in particular, to those finding it difficult to make everyday decisions. People, of course, seek counselling for various reasons. While each individual or couple differs, below are some of the most common reasons for seeking the services of a professional counsellor. Stress and anxiety Grief and loss Relationship issues, such as separation or divorce Major changes in personal circumstances Workplace stress Trouble in decision making Loneliness Depression or bullying

Relationships – prevention is better than cure We regularly service our cars and maintain and repair our homes, yet our relationships (which are key to our way of life) receive little or no such care and consideration until they are severely broken down. A visit to a counsellor can assist in this area by helping us to:Gain more clarity about what is actually causing the rift in a relationship. Feel better and happier within a relationship. How to Nourish Yourself

The pleasure of eating wholesome and raw

dynamic when you can and better still grow some greens at home to supplement your cooking. Currently within the food scene, there is a huge interest in the raw food way of eating. This means avoiding foods that have been cooked at over 60 degrees Celsius. The idea is to consume foods that contain more life force within them. Having done some research on vitamin and mineral absorption, I have concluded that although high heats do indeed destroy some vitamins it is not the case with all and some foods are made easier to digest with moderate heating. In my view, it is a wise person that covers all bases and has some raw unadulterated food for the obvious benefits. The good news is that many progressive cafés in the region now have raw food choices so it is easy to give it a go and try it yourself. Almond milk, for example, is promoted in the region and is delicious in fruit smoothies. Raw food dishes (assuming they don’t contain honey) also suit those on vegan and dairy free diets. Annie Malone is the proprietor of The Natural Temptation Café. For information on raw food recipes and for a choice of raw food dishes, visit the café at 47, Stephen Street, Bunbury.

The eating of food and the enjoyment associated with it is one of life’s most coveted pleasures. So when it comes to food that you eat every day, you not only want it to taste great but to also be beneficial to you as well. After all, why waste time on denatured foods when there are so many wholesome choices available to us in today’s market place. Incorporating nourishing foods into our lives has never been easier. It’s all around us! However, so is the marketing instigated by all of the fast food companies. We just have to be sensible about what we listen to and keep in mind that fast food may not keep our bodies fast for the long haul. To achieve a healthier and more productive lifestyle, free from obesity, diabetes and other degenerative diseases and free from the maladies of many modern foods, embrace wholesome, living cuisine. A good place to start is to eat seasonal, locally grown fruits and vegetables. If you enjoy meat, support local meat suppliers that sell grass finished meat as this will contain less marbles of polyunsaturated fats. Buy organic or bio68

Spring Speedy Recipe

food & wine Broccoli is one of the super foods, a term often banded around when we are talking about health and wellbeing. Super foods have been found to be highly superior to other types of food because of their nutritional benefits. This recipe makes it easy to enjoy broccoli’s antioxidants, high fibre content, vitamin C and beta carotene (an antioxidant that’s converted to vitamin A in the body). To retain even more nutrients from the broccoli, try steaming it instead of adding it to the boiling water. Then simply add to the cooked pasta. For a more filling alternative, gently cook sliced chorizo with the garlic.

Broccoli Pasta

Method In a large pot, bring salted water to the boil. When the water is boiling, add pasta and broccoli until pasta is al dente. Reserve approximately 1 cup of the water and drain pasta and broccoli. Using the same pot, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and add garlic until it starts to colour. Reduce the heat and return the pasta and broccoli to the pot. Mix well with another tablespoon of olive oil, grated Parmesan, chilli flakes and salt and pepper to taste. Break up larger pieces of broccoli. Add a little of the saved pasta water and combine to the mixture. Add more of the water according to your desired consistency. Serve with the shaved Parmesan on the side.

Ingredients (Serves 4) 200g pasta 4 cups fresh broccoli olive oil 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped ¼ cup grated Parmesan ½ teaspoon chilli flakes salt and pepper to taste shaved Parmesan to serve

Matching Wine with Food Where to start? There’s never been a better time to be enjoying food and wine in Australia. Our eating out choices span every type of international cuisine from Asia to Europe and from the Americas to Africa with our own modern take on cuisine inspired and heavily influenced by our neighbours. Our supermarkets are also full of more fresh local produce then ever before along with offerings from countries far and wide. Our wine has also come of age. In Western Australia, we enjoy a fantastic array of different wines produced primarily in the Margaret river region, the Swan Valley, and, of course, in our very own Geographe wine region, home to the picturesque Ferguson Valley. All that is left for us to do is to combine the food and wine successfully. More choice can mean more confusion but more choice should also mean the chance to discover new combinations further to classic ones. The main

thing is that it should be great fun trying! When it comes to pairing the right wine with food, in Australia, feel free to throw away the cont. pg 74 72

rule book. We are a nation influenced by many different cultures and as such are not so hung up over historical behaviours or national dishes. There’s a free spirit in the kitchens and cellars in many parts of Australia that drives adventure and discovery, meaning that it’s important not to get too hung up on issues, such as the colour of wine when trying to complement a dish. There is, however, a strong argument to match food and wine from the same region. It’s no secret that some of the best cuisine in the world happens in some of the finest winegrowing regions. Places where wine is often extremely prevalent in the cooking process. Ultimately, it comes down to two schools of thought - complement or contrast. The complement approach is all about striking a harmony between the flavours and textures on the plate and in the glass or matching the weight of the wine, whether full, medium or light-bodied, to the weight of the dish. An example of this would be to serve a full-bodied Shiraz with a grilled fillet of beef. The contrast approach operates under the premise that opposites attract and brings together food and wine that have contrasting traits to aim to strike a balance of flavour intensity and texture through their interaction. An example of this is to match a crisp, acidic Sauvignon Blanc with a fish served with a creamy lemon sauce. The idea here is that the crisp acidity of the wine

serves as a contrast that can cut through the creaminess of the sauce to give a refreshing sensation to the palate. Of course, if you are to regularly choose the right food and wine combinations successfully, an understanding of the basic tastes of wine, i.e. sweet, bitter and sour, is highly important. Quite often, much of what we believe to be the taste is in fact the aromas of the wine, such as floral, fruit or spice. And aside from the basic taste of wine, the weight and intensity, or texture of a wine is another important factor in food and wine pairing. Plus, don’t forget, the best match should always be a personal preference. Enjoy sampling lots of different combinations until you find ones that you are happy with. In short, the best choice will be the one that pleases your palate the most.
