For Bunbury-based jewellery designer Renee Evans, design has always come naturally. Entirely self-taught, from a young age Renee began creating pieces for her friends and family and her love of design continued throughout her schooling. On leaving school, Renee balanced her passion for jewellery design with her job as a dental nurse and, after securing a number of contracts with local gift and jewellery stores, she decided to start her own business. Initially starting with an out of town workshop, before her twentieth birthday she had opened her first store Eshe in Stephen Street, followed by a second store in Dunsborough shortly after. As well as running her 2 stores, Renee has also created Bowerbird, her very own unique jewellery collection. Drawing on influences from the world, nature and from her own journeys and life experiences, Renee was also inspired by a generous inheritance from her grandmother – a treasure chest of exotic jewellery from her worldwide travels. These pieces further fuelled Renee’s creative drive and appreciation of the craft and Bowerbird was born. Designed and created in Australia, the Bowerbird range is on trend while still remaining effortlessly timeless. The collection aims to express the wearer’s unique personal style and pieces are personalised to symbolize life’s memorable moments. “I love going on the journey of discovery, which ends in me creating

each individual piece. They all have their own story to tell,” explains Renee. The Sterling Silver Bowerbird collection features unique charms, stacked cuffs, bracelets, double finger rings and intricate hoop earrings. A Blooming Summer There are plenty of ways to get a healthy garden for summer and most experts will often recommend reducing grassed areas, optimising shady tree cover and incorporating more decking or pavers. This is all good advice but what about the season’s colours? What a shame to have to miss out on beautiful foliage and flowers especially as, with a bit of careful nurturing, many will thrive in our hot summers! So, if you are after a bit of colour in the garden this summer, why not start by planting up some pots. Although potted plants are notoriously difficult to keep healthy during the hot weather, there are hardy options that will survive. Flowering containers bring the garden closer to you, they help to sculpt areas and they add gorgeous vibrancy to your outdoor area. One of the most attractive of plants able to survive the harsh WA sun and lack of rainfall is the native hibiscus. It is a shrub with dark green foliage and its flowers come in many colours, particularly striking are the mauve, deep blue and orange varieties. As with all native plants, once established, the hibiscus needs only a small amount of water. Or try one of the many bromeliads. Although

they all flower at various times of the year, there is a way to trigger a mature plant into flowering at your desired time. Place the bromeliad in the shade alongside a banana skin or apple and cover the fruit and plant in plastic for 3 days. The gas given off by the decaying fruit promotes flower growth. Put the plant back to its usual spot and a flower should appear within 4 months. For hanging baskets as well as pots, choose a geranium with its cottage garden appeal. Currently popular are the ‘butterfly bushes’ or gauras. These reliable waterwise plants do well in full sun and their butterfly-like flowers bloom in white and shades of pink. Bougainvilleas are wonderfully dramatic climbing plants and hardy enough to prosper in full sun. However, they can easily get out of control if not pruned back. Try opting for a compact version, a ‘bambino bougainvillea’, as these have spectacular flowers yet have a restricted growth habit so are perfect for pots. Ask at your local garden centre about new flower releases and find out what colourful options you can add to your backyard or patio. Remember to take in all the advice available about looking after your new plants. You’ll find it isn’t as tricky as you thought!

Chris and Jayne Bowen-Sant, owners of Homeward Bound Imports, are not exactly new to retail having opened their first shop over 30 years ago! Back in 1976, after having travelled the world for 3 years, the pair decided to put down in roots in Busselton and it was here that they opened their first store. Starting off by selling Jayne’s handmade jewellery together with a collection of exotic gifts gathered from the Philippines and China, it wasn’t long before the store was expanded to include a range of more diverse and eclectic stock. Following the demolition of the store to make way for a large shopping centre, Chris and Jayne opened their new store within the new centre, and so began a journey that would lead to a total of 14 shops in the next 3 decades. Their latest venture, Homeward Bound Imports, has been located in Victoria Street, Bunbury, since 2008. The store specialises in importing a unique range of furniture, homewares and accessories predominantly sourced from Indonesia, India and Afghanistan. There’s nothing quite so energising as feeling the warm sun on our skin, especially at this time of year. However, we must always be aware of the strength of our fierce Aussie sun. We all know that we should wear sunscreen to protect our skin from burning but did you know that being burnt is just one of the harmful effects of sun exposure? Over time, the effects from every little bit of sun we experience start to build up. Pigmentation, premature aging, lesions, eye damage and skin cancer are all potential results of sun exposure. It is simply not enough to spend short amounts of time outside. Applying (and reapplying) sunscreen is a necessary part of everyone’s routine. Sunscreen protects the skin from the sun’s damaging ultra-violet (UV) rays. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are able to damage the skin’s cellular DNA, which can lead to genetic mutations, potentially leading to skin cancer. When our skin burns, it is the effect of the UVB rays, which do not reach as far into the skin as UVA rays. A tanned skin is the effect of our bodies trying, unsuccessfully, to protect against more UV ray exposure. It is vitally important to not only choose the right sunscreen (‘broad spectrum’ protects against UVA and UVB rays) but to make sure that it is applied correctly. This means applying enough, applying regularly and applying daily. UVA rays are prevalent at all times of the year and can penetrate clouds and glass. Thick creams, light lotions and sprays, waterproof, non-greasy, there are plenty of options on the market to suit every requirement. Yet women, who despite being more likely to use sunscreen than men, are still reluctant users due to the heavy texture of some products or for fear of breakouts. But there are options on the market

that are light, oil free and a pleasure to use. Shiseido is a leading producer of suncare products that are both delightful to use and effective in protecting skin. Osteopathy is possibly the most complete of all of the modern day manual therapies. Osteopaths pride themselves on their handson approach to the human body and their treatment methods are considered amongst the safest and most effective forms of complementary medicine. The main aim of osteopathic treatment is to restore normal function to the whole body, whatever the ailment. Treatment is not a cure or a quick-fix instead it assists the body in achieving its optimum health to ensure it is better able to deal with the problems being experienced. A typical osteopathic treatment will start by compiling a comprehensive case history of the patient, followed by an examination and hands-on treatment. Never one to rest on its laurels, exciting news for 2012 is that Mercedes is also launching the CLS Shooting Brake into Australia. Premiered at the Beijing Motor Show in April, the Shooting Brake, based on the former E-Class estate, offers added hatchback practicality with the same range of diesel and petrol variants as the CLS. Encouraging signs for investors By Theo Krinos

Ever since the GFC, we have become a nation of cautious spenders and avid savers. Many consumers have spent the last few years paying off debt and now find themselves in a much stronger financial position to go out and borrow to invest. Secondly, residential vacancy rates across all of our capital cities have continued to tighten. Recent data from SQM Research put the national residency rate at 1.9%. In other words, it’s a good time to be a landlord – particularly in WA! Finally, mortgage rates are hovering near historic lows with many experts predicting further cuts to come. Add into the equation the fact that prices are lower than they have been for years, it means, for many, investing in property has suddenly become a whole lot more affordable. With the market potentially on the turn, Western Australia certainly stands to benefit more than most. Population growth is set to continue to soar over the coming years and the resources boom will continue to put upward pressure on rental yields. Trend is your friend

....and your enemy!

dividend paying stocks like Commonwealth Bank and Telstra to get returns close to 9%. These are the trend setters.....not the trend followers...which one will you be? I firmly believe that if you are seriously thinking about leaving your money in cash, be quick and secure 3 to 5 year rates before you go to the bank next year and find that the rates are 3.5% on your term deposit and wonder why you are not even keeping up with inflation. If you can bear some exposure to shares, then get in quick as soon all the bargains will not be bargains. Remember, buying low is the secret to making money with property and shares, and buying high and being a ‘Leeming Trendy’ is the quickest way to lose money. When the share market is up and everyone is thinking, ‘geez, I wish I got into shares in 2012’, it will be too late! Harry Hindsight will not help you. Leaving money in the bank makes perfect sense. Leaving all your money in term deposits and cash does not. Cash and term deposits are savings accounts, not investment accounts. When it comes to investing, following trends is probably the simplest and most effective way to make money. Does it always work? No, but investing is about getting it right most of the time and making big gains and small losses. So right now what are the trends? Interest rates are going down and so, of course, cash and term deposits are returning less and less. A year ago, you got 6% and now you will be lucky to get 4.5% for a 12 month term deposit. Now to put that into perspective, that is a 25% fall, or let us use share market terminology, a 25% crash! Still want to leave your money in cash? Well, let’s look at the next trend; good old inflation, the silent erosion of wealth. Inflation is on the way up and is looking at reaching 3.5% by next year due to the carbon tax, a lower impact of a high Australian Dollar and increases in food costs due to petrol and wages. So when someone says, ‘leave your money under the bed’, remember your spending power is being reduced by 3.5% per year due to inflation and to give you another perspective, if your bank account earns 4.5% and inflation is 3.5% you are making 1% on your money! Plus, if you are paying fees or tax on that money you could well be going backwards! And you still want to leave your money in cash at the bank?! So the next trend is the share market. Well, as predicted in my last newsletter, it has gone up and it looks like the trend will continue. Investors are beginning to invest in high 50

quality retirement and maybe even the opportunity to retire before 65. As for what to do to accumulate retirement savings, it really doesn’t matter whether it’s cash, property or shares. Work out what you can afford to do without and put that aside. Don’t underestimate the value in getting professional advice. The right advisor is one that should complement your investment style. Maybe meet up with a couple before you make that all important decision as this person will be the one to help realise that retirement goal. The biggest tip I can give is to not invest in something you don’t understand. Do some of your own research, if needed. Right now there are so many opportunities in all sectors that you don’t have to dig too deep to find a good investment. So work out how much money you can do without right now and put this in the piggy bank for retirement. Anything extra now will grow into a handy amount as you near retirement. Sure, we have the holidays that we accumulate during our working life, but remember, we don’t have to wait until we are 65 to retire! Don’t we all wish we could hang up the boots at 55? technology is advancing. The latest LED globes, for example, are rated to run for twenty years before requiring replacement. Another factor in the push for more efficient lighting is ceiling insulation. Halogen downlights run at very high temperatures and require ceiling insulation to be cut back for fire safety around each light. Across a whole house, these gaps in the ceiling insulation have a negative effect on the energy efficiency of the home. Installing downlights in this manner reduces the effectiveness of ceiling insulation by approximately half (halogen downlights in a room with R3.0 insulation would reduce the R-Value of the ceiling to R1.5). LED and compact fluorescent downlights can have insulation installed up to the sides of the fixture and in some instances the insulation can be carried over the fixture. Use of this new lighting technology is therefore saving money in heating and cooling costs as well as reduced operating costs. New regulations introduced in May, aimed at reducing the use of low-voltage halogen downlights, now restrict the amount of wattage new residences can install. These downlights, although popular, are being replaced by LED and compact fluorescent alternatives to meet the increased energy efficiency requirements. As part of the six star requirements introduced into the building code of Australia earlier this year, lighting is now restricted in all new residences and is checked as part of the building permit application. Internal areas are limited to 5 watts per square metre, outdoor living areas to 4 watts per square metre, and garages 3 watts per square metre. These wattages do not need to be applied per room instead they can be averaged out across the whole house. For example, owners can still have high wattage lighting in the living rooms and kitchens as long as this is offset by energy efficient lighting in other areas of the home. With the phasing out of incandescent lighting through import restrictions, the government is now targeting halogen lighting through the regulation of new construction. Although more expensive to buy up front, both fluorescent and LED lighting alternatives use approximately 80% less electricity than a similar light output from incandescent and halogen. With LED and CFL lighting becoming more popular, prices are reducing and 54

All new four-stroke, portable outboards now available First shown earlier this year at the Dusseldorf Boat Show, Suzuki Marine’s latest range of portable outboards has arrived in Australia just in time for summer after its recent unveiling at a media and dealer conference in Noosa Heads, Queensland. Now, some readers may think that it’s pretty hard to get excited about outboard motors but rest assured, for boaties, these brand new motors are big news! Featuring a swathe of technical innovations, the key feature of these latest generation outboards is an electronic fuel injection system that runs without the need for battery power. Of course, battery-less EFI is not exactly new to outboard engines but it is new to less powerful, manual-start outboards. The new EFI system is also combined with Suzuki’s Lean Burn Fuel Control system, guaranteeing easier starts, more responsive acceleration, smoother performance and above all, greater fuel efficiency. To achieve this, Suzuki engineers have designed a completely new fuel injection system, which includes an inline high-pressure fuel pump, a throttle body and small fuel cooler, vapour separator and fuel injector. Available in 8 separate configurations, the DF15A and DF20A come in short (15in) and long shaft (20in) with either manual or electric start. Weighing in at just 44kg in short-shaft, manual start configuration, the DF15A claims

to be the smallest and lightest outboard in its class beating its nearest competitor by 2.5kg. Boaties continuously hauling outboards on and off the transom after each outing on the water are sure to appreciate this! They will also appreciate their manageable size that enables them to be an ideal power match for a wide variety of boats, such as small RIBs and tenders, day boats and small fishing boats. Restaurant Review Smallwater Estate

Boasting an enviable reputation for its premium Zinfandel grapes and award-winning wines, there is now yet another good reason for visiting the picturesque surroundings of Smallwater Estate. Just over 12 months ago, the winery opened its new cellar door and restaurant and, amidst some rave reviews, we at The Bunbury Life felt it was high time we visited. Located halfway between Donnybrook and Balingup, just off the South Western Highway, Smallwater Estate is set on 53 acres of wonderful, rolling countryside. The cellar door and beautifully designed restaurant with its decked flooring and relaxed, comfortable interior are set in an elevated position, offering fabulous views over picturesque dams and the estate’s famous marron ponds. Take our word for it; the views are worth the visit alone! Arriving for lunch, and greeted by our hosts John and Gail, we began by sampling a selection of the estate’s wines at the cellar door. The Zinfandel, of course, was a standout but don’t miss the chance to try the excellent Smallwater Roze, the smooth Chardonnay or our personal favourite, the elegant Shiraz. Next, it was time for lunch! If you are planning a family trip, you will be pleased to hear that children are well catered for at Smallwater Estate. The playground is within easy view of the restaurant and the menu includes a choice of kid-friendly meals. So while we perused the menu and sipped our wine, the children were happily tucking into a tasty homemade ham and cheese pizza together with a special kids’ tasting plate of fresh fruit and crumbed chicken amongst other healthy delights.

Now it was our turn, and for our starter we were recommended the restaurant’s special Tasting Plate. What a great recommendation this was! The dish came laden with a delicious selection of freshly prepared treats, too many in fact to mention here but highlights included fish cakes with Thai dressing, sushi-style chicken and cucumber rolls, a spinach and feta cigar, baked ricotta with chilli and herbs, Middle Eastern chicken balls and a fantastic pumpkin tart with caramelised onion. With the plentiful supply of marron on the property, the menu, as you would expect, always features a number of unique marron dishes. Our choice was between The Garlic Butter Marron with Salad (served in the shell) and the Marron Risotto Stack served with a salad featuring roasted sesame seeds, strawberries and an apple and vanilla balsamic glaze. We plumped for the risotto and thoroughly enjoyed the delicate flavour of the fish combined with the tangy freshness of the salad. Other dishes that caught our eye on the menu included a Warm Greek Lamb Salad and the Roasted Mediterranean Vegetable Tart in sour cream pastry. Tempting puddings included a Lemon Crumble Cake and a warm Pear and Ginger Cake served with syrup and cream. Offering stunning views and friendly service combined with great food and wine, Smallwater Estate comes highly recommended. As we left clutching bottles of Zinfandel and Shiraz, we vowed to return soon!

Get Green and Clean

Incorporating more greens into an eating regime doesn’t have to be difficult. Try considering green smoothies, vegetable wraps and creative salads with high protein and gluten free grains, such as quinoa (keenwah) or millet. Starting the day with some greens will help the body feel energized and give it a big boost of alkalizing minerals, oxygen and enzymes. Green smoothies are not all about drinking spinach! Usually, they are a combination of three-quarters fresh fruits and a quarter greens. Our most popular green delight contains pineapple, apple, strawberry, lemon, dates and spinach. This smoothie is an amazing lime green colour that will have you feeling spritely by just looking at it. And yes, they are surprisingly delicious and truly delightful. How to embrace a fresh and active lifestyle this summer

Now is the perfect time to spring clean and refresh the body and review our eating style. Warmer days entice us to lighter foods, so it’s a great time to detox and find that extra energy to really enjoy the coming months. Take up the challenge and try a gentle change of eating habits and you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. Start by cutting down on all breads, cakes, meat, fish, dairy, products and sugar. Instead, enjoy fresh vegetable and fruit juices, plenty of filtered water, fresh salads with only lemon or olive oil dressings, and whole fruits and vegetables. This will give the digestive system a well-earned rest, allowing the liver to have a reduced work load for the day. The optimum eating plan is to aim for an 80% alkaline food diet (fruits, vegetables, alkaline grains and nuts) and to combine this with 20% acid foods, which are mainly protein based products and grains. For convenience in our busy lives, it is often easier to grab foods from the more concentrated food groups, a quick sandwich, pastry or cake to complement that cup of coffee.

Summer….long golden days, warm balmy evenings….surely it is most Aussies’ favourite time of the year. Owner of the largest winery in the Ferguson Valley, Willow Bridge Estate, Jeff Dewar has quickly built up an impressive reputation for his wines both at home and abroad. The Bunbury Life recently met up for a chat. What prompted you to make a career out of the wine industry? With two older brothers managing successful merino sheep studs, I decided early on that I didn’t want to be in direct competition with them. I was confident about diversifying yet remaining in the broad perimeter of agriculture. It was the mid-nineties when I was first introduced to the romance of the wine industry. So were a lot of other people both here in Australia and in NZ and I’m very fortunate to be still running a successful business today. What brought you to the Ferguson Valley? Initially, I had in my mind that the region in which I wanted to establish a winery was Margaret River. This resulted in exciting many a real estate agent over a period of months, only to come away unsatisfied and find myself still searching for the perfect property.

Run by artist and printmaker Denise Gillies, Lyndendale Gallery, is a charming boutique gallery featuring a selection of her own works together with works from other members of the SouthWest Printmakers. Also discover fine pottery, glassware, jewellery, hand-crafted books, textiles, wood art and fashion accessories from local southwest artists. A family friend then introduced us the Ferguson Valley, which not only changed mine and now my family’s life for ever but has had a hand in introducing this hidden jewel to the world. When looking for the ideal conditions to grow premium grapes, the valley provides more than most. Cooling ocean breezes, elevation, rich soils and close proximity to WA’s second largest city. Which of your wines are you most proud of? The Black Dog Shiraz is definitely the wine I’m most proud of. It’s a wine that none of us saw coming. It was a result of a small block of Shiraz, rightly named now The Black Dog, being left to ripen for two to three weeks later than the rest of the block. Our winemaker at the time, Rob Bowen, anticipated high concentrated, rich flavours and the resultant wine was given the name Black Dog. The name originated when our cellar hand at the time, described the colour as being, “as black as the inside of a dog”. Successive vintages and numerous awards later and the wine has become an iconic

Spare time...well, with 4 young children most of my spare time is spent being involved with their sport or hobbies. I do enjoy having a game of golf or getting down to Busselton and spending time in the boat, fishing. The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling

What huge expectations lay before the author of the Harry Potter series when her first adult novel was published. No doubt many rushed to buy The Casual Vacancy solely because of the successes of J. K. Rowling’s adventures of Potter in his fantasy wizard world. However, from the very first lines, it is clear that this is a novel as farfetched from fantasy as the cold light of day. In fact, often, it is written with such insight to characters’ thoughts and psychologies that it feels quite confrontational. Widely respected Barry Fairbrother of Pagford (a small English town, seemingly perfect and packed with the usual stereotypical characters) suddenly dies, leaving behind a desirable place on the Parish Council. His death and empty seat release a chain reaction of events, which avalanches heavily on the community. Persevering through the complications of remembering who is who during the opening chapters, the reader will start to piece together the intricate relationships, feuds and motivations of Pagford’s inhabitants. Raw emotions rip through the novel, interspersed with welcome bouts of honest humour. With plenty of colourful characters, and a fascinating spiral of intermingled paths of life, The Casual Vacancy stirs up an intriguing mixed bag of emotions.

In fact, it’s not a story at all and what jolts the reader constantly is that every single word describes real life. It’s also not the script from a movie where the hero overcomes the enemy in desperate and deadly scenarios amidst amazing cinematic effects and a powerful soundtrack. John Cantwell relives experiences from his military life and takes us through his immense challenges and exaltations as well as the sadness and regrets that lead to his suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Cantwell began life in the Australian Army as a private and rose up the ranks to Major General. Back in 1991, he served on the front line of the first Gulf War. Then his nightmares began; the first signs that Cantwell was suffering posttraumatic stress from the horrors that he had experienced. More combat duty ensued in Iraq in 2006. By 2010, Cantwell was the commander of all Australian forces in Afghanistan and the wider Middle East area of operations. As the years went on, he faced inner battles in which he struggled to keep his feelings of anxiety and dread under control. Yet his outer self displayed his constant commitment to duty and to the men and women he commanded. There are brutal accounts of events, sights and smells, along with honest descriptions of the rollercoaster of emotions that Cantwell and his soldiers experienced. He doesn’t try to glorify battles or play down desperate terror and grief. Exit Wounds is beautifully written, riveting and compelling.
