A guide to the best boutiques in Bunbury

What’s on the racks? Currently still stocking summer collections but winter collections are starting to arrive. As a denim-based store, plenty of stock is designed to be worn with jeans but there is also a great selection of dresses, shorts, swimwear, footwear and accessories. Labels are designerdriven from both Australia and overseas with a focus on new and emerging labels alongside established brands.

New this season New brands for winter include Wildfox from the US and Edwin Denim from Amsterdam. Also find Sole Society shoes and Vintage Century leather bags to name just a few.

History of the store Sabotage opened in 2001 at the cinema end of Victoria Street and at the time was the only retailer at that end of town. Breaking away from the more traditional retail areas, opening there was an adventurous move but, with careful planning and a vision and a belief in the Marlston development, it was a successful gamble. Twelve years on, the store continues to enjoy support from both tourists and locals along the cappuccino strip.

Best buy for under $100 Women; Finders Keepers knit tank dress - $90 Men; Afends chinos - $99

Who’s who? Owned by Bunbury locals, Peter and Megan Gianfrancesco, for the past 8 years the store has been primarily run by Megan. Responsible for all the buying and stock choice, Megan counts on strong support from her family who also live and breathe fashion. The store’s success is based on choosing pieces with its own customers in mind and Megan can be found in store most days, chatting to customers and gathering feedback. A team of dedicated staff also shares her passion for all things fashion.

Beware. Flamboyant disco style is going to have you boogieing into your own little wonderland as colour and cool hit us for this autumn in the city. And after a summer of ladylike pastels, strong style seduction beckons... deliciously... PURPLE RAIN: Ok, so maybe Prince was a little more early 80’s than 70’s but you get the vibe, right? Purple is hot hot HOT this autumn. Rather than a colour purple remake, edge up your look with retro-liscious suede and patent knee high boots that are oh-so-definitely made for walking. Cross that out. Strutting. Add a soft felt purple fedora from Helen Kaminski. Seriously seventies chic. FUNKY TOWN: Get on down with that magic ingredient... glitter! Like jewellery for the feet, sleek pumps are shimmied up with sparkles and spikes (see Siren’s Primal - it’s called that for a reason), evening sandals get the glitter

heel treatment to trip the light fantastic and bling it all together with sparkle candy from PeepToe jewellery. RUBY TUESDAY: Don’t say goodbye, say hello! To a wow ruby red patent and rich black suede super comfortable loafer from Magnini, or oh-so-striking glossy mid-heel pumps from the style mavens at Melissa that are dripping with loveliness. So easy to pair with your favourite denims. Red lips a must. Starting to feel the disco love? Come join us for a play where we have the disco hits running in our two stores in Bunbury and Dunsborough, or get your super freak in your fingers and surf online at shoebedoo.com.au. And in the immortal words of Michael Jackson, don’t stop ‘til you get enough....

Ways To Add Value To Your Home …without breaking the bank!

2. Upgrade or clean flooring

Attending to dirty carpets and scratched wooden flooring makes a home seem bigger, brighter and much more appealing. For carpet stains, try steam cleaning, wash and wax for laminates, and for wooden floors, sand them back and apply fresh coats of varnish.

Our home is our biggest investment and adding value doesn’t have to cost the earth. So whether you are looking to increase the value of your property or simply looking to improve your quality of life, here are 10 great, affordable ways to achieve those renovation goals.

3. Paint throughout

Never underestimate how much value can be added to your home with a fresh coat of paint to either the interior or exterior. A good paint job is not only relatively cheap but it’s also the easiest way to inject new life into dull, lifeless rooms. Choose neutral colours to maximise appeal and if you can’t afford a professional painter to do the whole house, employ someone to paint just the entrance and living areas to maximise first impressions.

1. Give the kitchen and bathrooms a makeover

The old adage that kitchens and bathrooms sell homes applies more than ever today. As the most important room in the house, a renovated kitchen is a sure fire bet for adding value to the home and renovations don’t have to break the budget. A lick of paint or new handles on existing cabinet doors can work wonders. Of course, if there is a bit more money in the pot, adding stone bench tops can be a real winner and with a variety of composite stone tops now on the market you might be surprised at how affordable some can be. In the bathroom, try applying fresh sealant around wet areas, replace old towel rails and toilet roll holders, replace old shower heads and clean grouting. Again, stone vanity tops can create a real wow factor.

4. Clean from top to toe

How long is it since you gave your home a really good clean? Start from the highest point and work down, cleaning all work surfaces and in particular window dressings. Take down your blinds before cleaning, send your curtains to the drycleaners and clean out cupboards. You will have to move furniture out of rooms but the results will be worth it. ... cont. pg 30 28

home & garden

5. Improve lighting

looking its best for passers-by. Sand down and varnish wooden front doors or add some paint, repair ripped flyscreens and install brand new light fittings. A shiny new house number, swish new mailbox and new plant pot or water feature will add that finishing touch.

There’s nothing worse than a dark and dingy interior and by adding either more natural light or attractive artificial lighting your home can be transformed. Think about installing a skylight or an extra window in dark areas of the home or install the latest energy efficient LED lights to give the house a more contemporary look.

9. Render the outside brickwork

We are all guilty of hanging on to too many unnecessary items. A cluttered home is not only untidy but also appears much smaller. Have a garage sale, rent a storage unit, or start making trips to the landfill and whittle down your home’s contents to a manageable size.

If your home is starting to show its age on the outside, chances are it could be because of out-dated exposed brickwork. Rendering the brickwork to a home can be expensive, particularly on 2 storey homes where scaffolding costs come into play but the results can be stunning. It may cost a few thousand dollars but the returns could far outweigh the costs.

7. Open up the home

10. Landscape the gardens

6. De-clutter and add space

An unkempt garden can block out light, obscure views and dramatically reduce curb appeal. As one of the lowest cost, highest return makeovers in which you can invest, a beautifully landscaped garden is a great investment. If there’s money in the budget, it may even pay to have a designer come up with a garden and planting scheme that makes the most of the layout and proportions of the house. And, while you are about it, make sure that driveways and paving around the home are regularly jet washed.

Open plan living is all the rage and today’s homes are all about larger rooms and less of them. Knocking out non-structural walls is a great value-add to make a home appear larger than it really is. You can open up the kitchen to the living room or the lounge to the backyard relatively inexpensively. Bi-fold doors leading out from the living area to a sheltered outdoor area can also create more usable living space.

8. Give the front entrance a makeover

First impressions can make all the difference so always ensure the front of your home is 30

What’s The True By Theo Krinos Value Of Your Home? Has the property market finally turned? Since my last column for The Bunbury Life, there has been a regular stream of positive data published about the WA housing market. With the Perth median home price rebounding back to a 2 year high, land sales up 12% in the metro area in the September quarter and REIWA predicting property turnover will return to its long term average in 2013, there certainly seems room for optimism. You can also rest assured that any positive movements in the Perth market will eventually flow out to the South West and other regional areas. So with activity in the market set to increase, is 2013 the year when you look to take your next step up the property ladder? Or perhaps this is the year when you start or add to your property investment portfolio? Whatever your decision, before you make your move, it’s always wise to know the precise amount of funds you have to play with. Spending power for most will be determined by the amount of equity in the home and the ability to service the debt, and when it comes to calculating equity here is where the problem can lie. It’s a well-known fact that when it comes to the family home, sellers will view everything through rose-tinted spectacles. Ultimately a property is only worth what a buyer wishes to pay for it, not what the owner believes it is worth, and with prices falling in recent years, in many suburbs, values are still well down from their peak. Therefore many would-be

sellers who have bought in the last 5 years may well need to adjust price and therefore borrowing expectations. For investors looking to leverage equity in the home, a similar problem may exist. Currently, property valuers are being extremely cautious with their valuations and will continue to be until they see consistent evidence of an upswing. Emotional attachment and pricey renovations often drive sellers to expect a much higher valuation but the property market rarely reflects personal circumstances and certainly doesn’t sway an experienced valuer. Valuers are far more likely to take into account historical sales in the area so if a neighbour sold at the bottom of the market, in turn, the valuation could be much lower than expected. To get an accurate valuation, start by requesting a local real estate agent to provide a market appraisal on your home and from there you will have a pretty good idea on where you stand. Follow this with a visit to your local mortgage broker and your borrowing power will be quickly determined. A broker will also be able to explain ways of maximising borrowing power through consolidating existing loans or reducing credit card limits. Theo Krinos is Finance Manager at The Mortgage Gallery, Bunbury. Located at 32 Stirling Street, he can be contacted on 9791 4177 or email: theokrinos@themortgagegallery.com.au 34

What Will 2013 Mean To You? By Phil Di Candilo Are you sticking to your New Year’s resolutions? (A New Year’s resolution is a promise to yourself or decision to do something, especially to improve one’s behaviour or lifestyle in some way, during the year ahead – Collins English Dictionary) Whatever your resolution was for 2013, research indicates 88% of people will fail to achieve their goal. The primary reason for failure is not due to setting unrealistic goals but in fact through not getting enough support to achieve them. And, perhaps not unsurprisingly, the two most common goals are weight loss and financial security. For these two goals, and any other that you may have chosen, there is support out there. In most cases, it will come in the form of family and friends. Share your goal with them and then you can adopt some degree of accountability. Then you can begin your journey. As an accounting firm, we obviously recognise that physical wellbeing is important, however, it is the financial security goal that we are more equipped to help with. So, how can we all achieve financial security? Well, it’s a question we get asked almost every day and the answer will almost always depend on the desired level of security the client requires. The best place to start is to work out where

you are now and then get some professional guidance to set some goals for your future. It is never too late to start and if the turn of the year is the catalyst for a desire to set up financial goals, then now is the time to seek out that advice. Just like a weight loss goal that involves planned diets and exercise, financial security also requires sound planning. To help achieve your goal, it may require involving a variety of professionals, such as financial advisers, bank managers, insurance brokers and maybe even lawyers. In my experience, it always best to start with your accountant. After all, just like your doctor, this is the person who knows the most about you and is best equipped to direct you to the required specialist. As I have stated above, most people fail to execute their plan and it simply comes down to the fact they think they can do it alone. If you are serious about achieving your goal for 2013, whatever that may be, start by telling someone about it then do something about it. Feature Renovation Stirling Street, East Bunbury It seems hard to believe now but for the first 100 years of settlement, Stirling Street, with its route taking it past the Parade Hotel, was the main road into Bunbury. Of course, there is a very simple reason for this. Part of British naval office and Before explorer James Stirling’s duties as a colonial administrator was to select the town boundaries of the new harbour township. Selecting Stirling Street as this original town boundary, Stirling also decided that the relatively small, water-locked land to the north was to be the town centre whilst he took ownership of the land to the south. Due to the importance of Stirling Street in Bunbury’s formative years, today many of the city’s oldest homes can be found in this area. With many of the remaining homes dating back to the late 1800’s, these character-filled properties are mostly extremely wellmaintained. This 120 year old cottage in Stirling Street had a colourful past, once even being a recording studio. Renovated by local Bunbury builder, Tallwood Constructions, the design brief was to restore the heritage aspects of the home whilst offering convenient, modern 21st Century living. In the attempt to do this, part of the renovation of the home included removing the 1960’s front elevation.

Awarded the 2012 South West Housing Industry Association award for Renovation of the Year ($250,001 to $500,000) for this faithful reinterpretation of this delightful cottage, for further information on building with Tallwood Constructions, contact Alex Campbell on 0427 568214 or go online at www.tallwood.com.au

Gone are the days of people wanting to buy a renovation, rescue-type property, according to one of Summit Realty’s top South West Sales Representatives, Allison Miller. Right now, says Allison, buyers want a property where all the hard work is done so they can just move in and put up their feet. As a result, Allison believes sellers need to consider carefully how they present their property to the market. “Presentation is key,” says Allison, who specialises in the property markets of Eaton, Australind and Leschenault. And if you are currently considering selling, she has some good news! Following the declines experienced during the Global Financial Crisis, Allison is now seeing positive changes in the property market with the interest rate cuts effected in 2012 starting to draw both first home buyers and investors back into the market. In particularly, entry level homes have really started to move. “I also expect these positive early signs to eventually 42

Mercedes-Benz A-Class All new premium hatch arrives down under!

It was in 1997 that Mercedes-Benz unveiled the first incarnation of its mini MPV, the A-Class, to a highly expectant public. As the first ever small, front-wheel drive vehicle from Mercedes-Benz, it represented a huge step down in size for the luxury car manufacturer as well as revealing a new, unexpected upright look. Fifteen years, however, is a long time in motoring and although the original A-Class oozed innovation and sold over 1.6 million units worldwide, buyers’ tastes have since changed. Recognising that the mini MPV market has been superseded by a hotly contested premium hatch market, the all-new 2013 A-Class Mercedes-Benz is now a vastly different animal to its predecessor. In fact, other than its name, this new, exciting entry-level Mercedes shares little in common with its forerunner. Visually, it’s a completely different car. Now measuring in at around 4.3 metres, the new A-class has added 409mm in length and around 131mm to its wheelbase. Its newfound cool, more youthful looks are also enhanced by its more low-slung design. Longer, wider and lower, the A-Class has been transformed into a sleek, sporty, fashionable package. The more modern, contemporary feel also flows through to the interior with a selection of clever design touches. These include subtle carbon-style inserts on the dashboard and doors and swivelling tri-air vents as featured in the SLS AMG. The extra length and width also translate into more interior space and a bigger boot. Power-wise, the new A-Class gives a choice of both diesel and petrol four-cylinder engines, starting with a 90kW 1.6 litre petrol engine, which claims 5.8L per 100km. Other petrol options include the A200 BlueEFFICIENCY and the top of the range A250 Sport, which is powered by a 155kW 2.0 litre unit capable of achieving 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. The diesel option is the A 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, which offers impressive fuel efficiency at 4.6L per 100km. All engines also feature the ECO Start/ Stop function ensuring that the engine is temporarily switched off in stationary traffic. 44

motoring As you would expect, the new A-Class is also packed with an array of safety features as standard. As well as parking sensors, a reversing camera and an auto reverse-park system, equipment also includes nine airbags, ABS, ESC and Collision Prevention Assist. This automatically stops the car if it detects a collision at less than 30km/h. Add in Bluetooth, iPod and USB compatibility

and a choice of either Comfort or Sports suspension systems, and it’s clear MercedesBenz have left few stones unturned in making the all new model an extremely desirable package. Expect the reborn A-Class to heat up the premium hot hatch market even further. Can-Am Commander

Having reviewed both Can-Am ATV and 3-wheel roadster models in recent editions, this time it’s the turn of the stylish UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) Commander range. The Can-Am Commander side-by-side range of UTV’s was first launched in 2011 and today there are two models available in five different packages with two engine options. And as you would expect from BRP, the company that also builds Sea-doo PWC and Skidoo snowmobiles, its range of UTV’s is far from being your average UTV workhorse. Living up to the Can-Am philosophy in every way, the Commander range combines cutting edge performance, contemporary design and impressive rider comfort. There is also a choice of over 50 accessories! With market leading fuel efficiency, pinpoint handling, riderfocused features and advanced ergonomics, the Commander range has been designed for extreme off-road action from the ground up. Available as either the Commander 800 in 2 different packages or as the Commander 1000 in 3 different packages, the 800 features a 71-horsepower Rotax 800 EFI, while an 83-horsepower Rotax 1000 EFI powers the Commander 1000. According to BRP, the Rotax 800 EFI engine is the most powerful side-byside under 1000cc in the industry, while the Rotax 1000 EFI V-Twin is purported to be the

BRP’s award-winning side-by-side UTV

most powerful engine in any side-by-side on the market. In conjunction with the impressive performance levels, the Commander is fitted with the unique double A-arm independent suspension system with dive-control geometry, designed to eliminate diving under heavy braking and rough terrain. At the back of the vehicle, the Commander comes with Torsional Trailing Arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension to provide exceptional control, especially in rough terrain. Plus, as with the Can-Am range of ATV’s, the Commander range offers the Visco-Lok front differential system designed to progressively transfer power automatically from a slipping front wheel to a gripping one. Standard features on the Commander also include a high-strength steel cage, a 240 watt lighting system, quick-attach side nets, three-point seatbelts with anti-cinch, 214mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers, removable comfort seats that feature lumbar support, adjustable tilt steering, dual cup holders, and a huge 10 gallon gas tank. Plus, there’s 31.6 litres of storage, 11 inches of ground clearance and 1,500 pounds of towing capacity. Finally, if you really want to look the part, check out the Commander 1000 Limited. Described as the Cadillac of the UTV market, this top of the range model offers luxurious comfort combined with exhilarating performance. Further extras include a half windshield, touchscreen GPS and sound system with four integrated speakers. Savage Cuddy Cabin 585C

Exciting new fibreglass cruiser adds to range

It’s been almost 3 years since we last featured iconic Aussie boat builder Savage in The Bunbury Life and there is plenty of news to report! Having built its first boat at the turn of the last century, in addition to its longevity, the Savage brand is renowned for its sturdy range of aluminium boats that span 3 to 5.5m in length. In recent years, however, Savage has launched an exciting new range of fibreglass boats, and the first of which, the 195 Bowrider, was released in the summer of 2009. Since then, in addition to the 175 Bowrider, Savage has launched a range of new ‘C’ designated cuddy cabin models consisting of 4 boats; the 485C, 585C, 645C and the 655C. Our pick is the 585C, a highly versatile cruiser that easily doubles as a family run-around or a fishing boat with offshore capabilities. Ideal for fishing, lounging in the sun or for water sports, such as water skiing and wake boarding, much like the rest of the Savage range, the boat is loaded with features that in many cases would just be listed as options on other brands. Whatever your choice of use, with its deep v-hull design, the 585C offers a smooth and comfortable ride along with a highly stable platform at 48

Inline Skating The story goes that inline skating was inadvertently invented in the 18th Century by Belgian inventor and musician John Merlin. He attached a pair of small metal wheels to ice skates and, violin in hand, joined a masquerade ball thereby creating the world’s first pair of roller skates. Unfortunately, without brakes he proceeded to crash and break his violin! Well, whether that story is completely true or not, some 3 centuries on, inline skating has become a hugely popular worldwide sport. Exciting, fun and fast-paced, the sport is also renowned for its health and fitness attributes with recent studies in the US proving it’s aerobically equal to both cycling and running. So what are the main health benefits and advantages of inline skating?

Susan Brooks ower of The Rink

1. Cardiovascular

Getting fit isn’t always fun but when it is enjoyable participants will stick with it and reap the benefits. Interested in finding out more about skating? Well, the good news is that Bunbury is home to The Rink, one of the leading national skating centres. Operating for over 14 years, the centre provides skating activities suitable for all ages and skating abilities. The Be Active Skate-Star classes are learn to skate lessons and run on Saturdays from 3.00pm to 3.30pm at a cost of $8 for the class. If you fancy making a day of it, skate any time from 10.00am to 3.00pm for $10, including the class. Classes are also available every Monday and Thursday from 5.00pm to 5.30pm at a cost of $8 per session. Private lessons are available for 1 on 1 or small groups. If you already have the skills then take part in Be Active Roller Sport including artistic skating, inline hockey, speed skating or roller derbies. Enjoy a sport the whole family can participate in on a social or more serious level. Located at Gibbons Road, Davenport, for further information on inline skating at The Rink, call 9725 6999 or visit www.therink.com.au for general skating and class times.

Cardiovascular benefits from inline skating are equivalent to those derived from cycling and running, especially when skating at a constant 10-12 miles per hour. In short, it’s great for burning those calories.

2. Muscle strengthening and toning Active skaters will quickly develop muscles in the lower body, particularly the quadriceps, buttocks, thighs and lower leg muscles. Postural muscles also get strengthened whilst stabilising the body during skating.

3. Low Impact exercise Being low impact, it’s easy on joints (especially knees) and can also help stabilise certain joints by strengthening the muscles that support them. For those that can’t or don’t run, it offers a great alternative aerobic exercise.

4. Improves balance Skating means spending a long time on one foot! This leads to improved balance and coordination and by learning more advanced moves, improved agility.

5. Sense of achievement It’s great fun and will provide a sense of accomplishment and mental well-being! 50

South West Academy Of Sport Helping the south west region’s aspiring athletes reach their potential

Located in Bunbury, The South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) is a not for profit organisation committed to helping talented regional athletes pursue excellence through sport. The academy is styled after the Western Australian Institute of Sport and successful regional models in the eastern states of Australia that have had considerable success in producing champions in both team and individual sports. SWAS scholarships are for athletes between the ages of 14 and 18, and provide access to top tier coaches, specialist training and support services, which are often only available to athletes training in the metropolitan area. SWAS scholarships are available to athletes across a broad range of sports and are specially designed to cater to both individual and team sports. In the South West, there are individual scholarship holders who compete at state, national and international level in sports such as surfing, BMX and Taekwondo to name but three. SWAS also offers scholarships to athletes who compete in team sports. Working in conjunction with seven partner sports in the region (Australian Rules Football, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Soccer and Tennis), the academy provides funding through the scholarship program for coaching clinics, physical therapy, nutrition and much more. The organisation runs a number of events during the year where members of the community are encouraged to come along, meet the athletes and enjoy themselves. This year, the program of events starts with the Breakfast of Champions to be held at VAT restaurant on Friday, 12th April where surfer Tom Carroll will be the guest speaker. Beauty Talk

By Niobe Gulley

Choosing eye shadow for a particular look, whether it be for nights out or for daytime events, is an enjoyable, albeit, at times, expensive process. What is often overlooked, however, is that the carefully selected shadow can potentially lose its desired look if applied with cheap or inappropriate brushes. Decent quality brushes with natural bristles might be more costly than their cheaper synthetic counterparts but the investment will be well worth it. Synthetic brushes will not blend shadow as effectively as natural bristle brushes and are often not designed for specific jobs. One brush is not able to effectively carry out all makeup tasks so have a small collection featuring a blending brush and a precision brush for eye shadow, one for brows and another for blush. The same goes for mascara. As well as choosing colours, longevity and waterproof qualities, research the types of brushes that come with the mascara itself. Makeup companies spend huge amounts of money researching the effects that a type of brush has on lashes. Some are rounded or skinny, others are curved or twisted and all are designed to give particular results, such as more volume, length or curl. Consider which brush gives the desired effect and experiment with different makeup looks from natural right through to wow. If you want to transform your usual look, then changing your lipstick is a sure-fire way to do it. Often creatures of habit, we know certain lipsticks suit us but with so many gorgeous options on the market we really ought to widen our beauty horizons. Reconsider

colour and experiment with nudes, pinks, oranges and reds through to shades of purple. Find out what works with your skin tone and the outfits you wear. As well as colour, try out types of finish and texture, such as gloss, stain, velvet or matte. Aim to have a repertoire of lipsticks that suit you and you’ll always be on trend. The colour of your lipstick says a lot about your style but next time you delve into your makeup bag take a look at the shape of the lipstick – it is quite revealing! Much has been written about how using a lipstick moulds it into forms which may tell a lot about a person’s personality. A pointy lipstick reveals the owner has ambition while, conversely, a rounded tip means that the owner is content with their lot in life. If the tip is flat, this suggests that a person is trustworthy though perhaps insecure. A concave tip can hint at the owner being affectionate and a great homemaker. Owners of diagonal tips are said to be outgoing and creative. Intriguing, isn’t it, but would you now show your lipstick to anyone?! Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room. Two destinations in one location in the Stirling Centre, Bunbury, for all your beauty needs.

Zoey Beadle of House of Qi

Acupuncture, the traditional treatment of inserting fine needles into specific points on the body, is a form of Chinese medicine that dates back thousands of years. It’s becoming increasingly popular in today’s fast-paced world for treating a range of common ailments. In this edition of The Bunbury Life, we meet local acupuncturist and traditional Chinese medicine specialist Zoey Beadle. Zoey, owner operator of House of Qi, has recently opened Bunbury’s first traditional Chinese medicine clinic located on Beach Road, Bunbury.

in a dam, and it’s this disruption that leads to illness. Treatment stimulates the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord) to release chemicals called neurotransmitters and hormones. These chemicals dull pain, boost the immune system and regulate numerous body functions.

Do you have any examples of how acupuncture has delivered results? A 46 year old patient was experiencing the early onset of menopause. This resulted in severe hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, irritability, insomnia, a loss of libido, vaginal dryness and palpitations. Her twice a week course of 12 treatments aimed to tonify the kidney and to nourish her yin. Following her first treatment there was an immediate reduction in hot flushes, night sweats and irritability. After six treatments, the insomnia had been reduced to waking only once a night with night sweats and palpitations resolved. Her symptoms had been reduced by half. After 12 treatments, her symptoms had completely gone and now she visits me just on a monthly basis to maintain her general wellbeing.

How long does it take to qualify to be an acupuncturist and how long have you been practising? It takes a minimum of 4 years to qualify. The study is made up of acupuncture, Chinese philosophy and western medical sciences. I have now been a practising acupuncturist for over 3 years.

How does acupuncture work? The insertion of fine, sterilised needles into specific therapeutic points on the body (referred to as acupoints) adjusts and alters the body’s energy flow into healthier patterns. This constant flow of energy, known as Qi (pronounced Chee) keeps the yin and yang balanced. However, this flow of energy can become blocked, just like water getting stuck

How long have you been practising in Bunbury? I opened House of Qi in Bunbury in May 2011, initially also servicing Donnybrook, Collie and Boyup Brook. However, due to the growth of my principal clinic Bunbury, I now just provide services to Bunbury and my local town of Boyup Brook. Zoey Beadle is registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) as a Chinese Medicine Practitioner - Registration Number: CMR0001718994. Call her on 0428 777297, go online at www.houseofqi.com.au or visit her new clinic at 103, Beach Road, Bunbury. 56

Autumn Nail Art

until winter or book in for a one-off manicure for a special night out. Choosing a different polish for the tip of the nail opens up so many colour and design options. It is a modern take on the classic French manicure. What’s set to be on trend this season is to have a dark nail colour, such as a deep red wine, navy blue or graphite with a metallic or glittery tip. Bare nails can be equally as attractive with a painted tip or with just a flick of colour across the tip. Painting a design on each individual nail has been around for a while and this autumn, the inspiration is urban graffiti, resulting in dizzying zig-zags in bright lines of colour. Being ever so popular right now in fashion, lace is also expected to feature as a special texture effect on nails. There are many amazing effects that can be added after a base

Beautiful nail art is currently a big beauty trend and can add as much impact to an outfit as a statement bag or pair of shoes. Runways around the world have been showcasing polish fashion and here are some ideas for fabulous autumn nails. The edit on colours is for glorious, deep red wine shades; blues, such as royal and navy; nudes that are buttery, caramel or taupe; and greys that have a blue undertone. Nudes and greys are perfect for showcasing jewellery and particularly, of course, rings. Darker nails tend to resurface in the cooler months and there is a call for black and graphite polish in matte as well as high shine. Striking effects include adding metallic swirls or embellishments, such as a crystal. However, because WA tends to have mild autumns, black may seem a little heavy. So perhaps save it 58

Joyous Ferments

with wild yeasts (sourdough) because commercial fast-rising yeast wasn’t available. As the wild yeasts in the sourdough need time to ferment, usually about 8 to 10 hours, the bacteria in the yeast helps digest phytic acids, a substance in the bran of all whole grains. These phytic acids inhibit the absorption of minerals from the wheat by the body. Sourdough fermentation also pre-digests gluten, allowing some people who are sensitive to gluten to enjoy properly fermented breads. Sauerkraut (cabbage) is the most traditional fermented vegetable pickle. Other vegetables can be added to your cabbage mix and this is usually known as kimchi. Sauerkraut is made by slicing cabbage and rubbing in salt to draw out the juice, which is usually rich in vitamin K. It is then covered and left to ferment for 2 to 3 days. The juice ferments into vinegar which contains the beneficial juice nutrients and all the good probiotic bacteria to aid digestion. Pop this into the fridge once fermented add a little to your salads or vegetables every day. Kombucha tea is another great way to get your quota of probiotics. Kombucha is the fermentation of tea (usually green organic tea) and sugar by a mushroom-looking entity called a scoby. Magic or otherwise, this scoby feeds on the sugar and tannins and performs the miracle of producing a beverage that contains B vitamins and enzymes that have great beneficial qualities. So don’t be afraid to embrace some fermented foods. Your body will love you if you do. Taste the love for a little longer and digest well. Most of us will know that yoghurt is good for us as it contains a culture called acidophilus. Well known for its health benefits, acidophilus is a term is used to describe a number of bacteria that help with digestion. However, in this edition, I want to tell you about other forms of beneficial fermented foods that are making a comeback to the food scene. Fermentation is a process by which foods are pre-digested by good bacteria, fungi and friendly enzymes – as in the yoghurt example. It is a naturally occurring process. There is a variety of fermented foods including yoghurt, kombucha tea, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, olives, pickles and sourdough bread. These fermented foods contain high amounts of beneficial bacteria that help improve digestion and strengthen our immune system. Also, when we ferment foods before eating them, it’s like partially digesting foods before we consume them, making the nutrients easier for our body to assimilate. These are just some of the reasons why it’s wise to include some in our everyday diet. In years gone by, many foods were made by traditional methods that included the fermentation process. As food technology has modernised, many of these traditional methods have been superseded to the detriment of our health. Bread, for example, was naturally leavened

My Favourite Dish

By Wendy Oh, Marlston Chinese

To create the paste for the dish, we use fresh chillies, red onion, garlic, lemongrass and the petals from the turmeric flower. This also gives the dish a delightful fresh floral scent. The tamarind paste and juice used give it the wonderful sour taste. Accompanied by a bowl of coconut rice, the dish is served on a bed of lettuce and is combined with pieces of tomato, onion, spring onion and pineapple. Delicious! The above dish is available at Marlston Chinese, Lot 2, 10 Ommanney Street, Marlston Hill. The restaurant is open Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner.

Assam Chilli Squid Our Assam Chilli Squid is a classic Malaysian and Singaporean recipe and was added to our menu about 4 months ago. It can also be served with deep fried Red Spot Emperor, king prawns or as a seafood combo. This tamarind influenced recipe (assam is the Malay word for tamarind) is a popular dish in hot and humid climates due to its refreshing, slightly sour aftertaste and is a staple dish in Nyonya cuisine. Nyonya (also spelt Nonya) food is a unique cuisine that was brought about by inter-marriages between early Chinese sellers and local Malay brides. Local ingredients such as chillies, belacan (Malaysian shrimp paste), lemongrass, galangal and turmeric are used to create a highly distinctive cuisine quite different to traditional Chinese or Malay food. 62

Meet ...

Are you planning any events at the winery this year?

Phil Smith of St Aidan Wines

Every year, we have around 4 “Film on the Ferguson” outdoor movie nights and always aim for one “Music on the Ferguson” concert each year. Our next movie night is on 15th March and we will have movies next summer in December, January, February and March. We also run occasional informal cooking classes the latest of which was an introduction to paella and tapas with Sophie Budd of Taste Budds Cooking Studio, Perth.

In this edition, we talk to another well-known Geographe wine region stalwart, Phil Smith of award-winning, Ferguson Valley-based, St Aidan Wines.

What prompted your interest in starting a winery and why the Ferguson Valley? My wife Mary and I moved to the Ferguson Valley 21 years ago from Vasse as I was taking up a position at The Bunbury Regional Hospital and the St John of God Hospital as an anaesthetist. We needed a place to live within about 20 minutes from the hospital for my on-call work. We purchased our farm as a bare block and proceeded to build our house. Initially, we planted oranges, mandarins, and Red Globe table grapes. However, we soon realised that as we were in an emerging wine region the future lay in wine grapes. Since then, we have planted Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscat, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Tempranillo grapes.

What do you get up to in your spare time? Spare Time? Who has that?!! Well, when we do get some, Mary and I are keen snow skiers and love visiting the beach. We also try and get away travelling (always to a wine region, of course!) whenever we can. St Aidan Wines is located at 754, Ferguson Road, Ferguson Valley.

Which of your wines are you most proud of? We have been most happy with our Chardonnay, which has won the best Chardonnay in the Geographe Wine Show for 6 of the last 7 years. Our Cabernet Merlot Blends have also done extremely well with 3 of the last 4 vintages getting gold medals at various shows.

When was you cellar door opened and who was behind the design? Mary and I designed our cellar door and café building to be in a similar form to the St Aidan Church after which we named ourselves. It was completed using local builders and contractors over three and a half years ago.

What are the opening hours of the cellar door and café? We are open most weekdays from 11.00am to 4.00pm (closed Wednesdays) and weekends and public holidays from 1.00pm to 5.00pm. 64

Yarloop, Myalup, Cookernup, are these areas you have visited lately? No. Then why not start planning a day trip. You’ll be surprised at just how much there is to see and do in the Harvey area. As well as the wineries and brewery listed below, you could also visit HaVe Cheese and sample some of their delightful wares which are made onsite. Call into Harvey itself and admire the wonderful murals and mosaics located around the town. History buffs will enjoy a visit to the Internment Camp Memorial Shrine built by Italian Internees during WWII.
