Spring Fashion

New season trends

Spring has arrived laden with new ideas to freshen up our wardrobes. It’s a season of bold looks and versatile trends, many of which work beautifully together. Carrying on it from its popularity in winter, the striking colour duo of black and white is the strongest trend to stand out for spring. Create a head-to-toe colour block outfit or wear a stripe, check, or a digital or abstract print. The main thing is to keep the line of the clothes simple so that the impact of the black and white is maintained. The crop top trend gets a grown up edge when kept to these two classic colours, especially as the new crop exposes just a glimpse of midriff. Cut-outs are perfectly suited to black and white too. By strategically cutting away geometric shapes, tops and dresses have a stronger line and make quite a statement. Adding a fresh look to spring is white and redone for a current look is the essential white shirt, which is beautifully tailored and oversized. Worn buttoned up, it looks pristine with white pants or tucked into a skirt. Look out for cut-outs, sheer panels and sleeves to the elbow or mid-upper arm. The monochrome imagery isn’t all we have to look forward to – blues, especially cobalt, are set to be big this spring. Again, the impact works best when the blue is delivered in a head-to-toe outfit. Still holding on fast to its spring roots, the floral trend is as popular as ever. Prints are digitally enhanced and bright, some still retaining the dark background seen in winter floral prints. Adding on-trend cut-outs adds a new edgy dimension to floral spring dresses. But what’s especially new is the oriental influence with blossom flowers on silk, giving prints an exotic feel. Blue is a popular colour for men this spring too with shades ranging from bright cobalt to more subdued navy. It’s a head-totoe look again and with tailored colour blocked or tonal pieces. The result is a sophisticated yet seemingly effortless outfit. Never losing its appeal is denim and there are countless wardrobe items in various shades of the timeless fabric to be found over the next months. A reworked denim shirt for spring is fresh with tailored trousers and a tie, or there are options to wear denim on denim. Mela Purdie at Beez Neez Boutique, Mandurah 8

Design For The Home Do’s and don’ts of renovating

Your kids are settled at school, you get on well with your neighbours and you love your house. Only problem is, it’s not big enough. Sound familiar? So after a great deal of thought you decide to extend and renovate the home. That way, you get to stay exactly where you are and, what’s more, you can put that hefty government stamp duty fee (incurred when moving) towards your own house. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Get a reputable builder in and a few months down the line you will have a bigger house exactly where you want to live. Well, if you are about to embark on the journey of extending or renovating the family home, here are a few tips worth considering. Remember, a well-planned project will save a great deal of time, stress and cash!

builder they can recommend through first-hand experience. There’s nothing better than a personal recommendation from someone you trust. If you do favour one particular builder, visit one of their display homes or recently completed projects. This will give you a chance to check out their quality of work and attention to detail.

DO have a clear budget Decide what you want to spend and stick to it. It sounds easy enough but this is where most people struggle. Building onto an existing home can be costlier than many people think, particularly if it’s a first floor extension. Scaffolding alone can run into thousands of dollars. Be sure of the funds you can borrow or have available and make certain you have enough to cover the required work. Plus, once you have received a price for the work, check that sufficient funds have been allowed by the builder for key areas of the home. For example, if you had always wanted stone bench-tops, have they been included in that special price?

DO your research There are plenty of builders out there looking for work, which means it’s a highly competitive market. Make sure you get at least 3 quotes for the work and don’t be afraid to negotiate. Ask family, friends and colleagues if they have a

Beware of ‘extra-overs’, builder-speak for additional costs added to the original quote as work progresses. These extras are often how builders significantly boost their profits.

builder instead they will be contracted in to do the job. This may mean there is a lack of consistency in the quality and finish of the work. As work progresses, make sure you keep a snag list that can be attended to, if not immediately, then at least on completion. Write down each concern as it occurs to you as you won’t remember every small item at the end of the build.

DO insist on a clear time frame Builders big and small will have plenty of projects on at any one time and they may perform a juggling act to keep clients happy. Make sure you keep on top of the projected dates discussed and if possible have a clause built into the contract that states a definitive end point to the works.

DON’T pay progress payments until specific work is completed Builders will require progress payments at various stages of the build. These will often be paid directly by your bank to the builder on receipt of an invoice. Beware of invoices submitted early before a particular stage has been completed. Always ensure that even the tiniest detail has been completed. An unpaid bill for a valid reason will always tend to focus a builder on getting the job done.

DO insist on one point of contact There’s nothing worse than building up a rapport with someone from your chosen building firm during the initial negotiations and then being given another point of contact once work has begun. This is one of the primary sources of frustration amongst home-owners when dealing with builders. Further frustration can also be caused by speaking to different people each time you phone up. Always insist on your chosen point of contact or you may find confusion ensues.

DON’T get stressed by in-action During the project there will undoubtedly be days when it appears little or nothing is being achieved. Try not to despair as remember the builder will have other clients they are attending to at the same time, each with their own demands. Frustrating as it may be as time ticks away, an open and transparent site

DO keep an eye on the quality of work as it progresses Remember, the workmen on site will generally not be employed directly by your chosen 20

home & garden supervisor should be able to put your mind at rest that the project is still progressing on schedule. Insist on a weekly update of works planned as this will also help you to plan around various jobs.

the project progresses. Some will be unavoidable; some will only become apparent as rooms take shape. For example, fitting another electrical point or installing another down-light is not a major job when the electrician is already visiting the home tomorrow. Or, rather than getting talked into paying over the odds for small alterations, remember that you can always have them done by someone else.

DON’T get fobbed off with poor excuses or jargon Remember, you are the client and if you would like something done in a certain way then, as long as it’s fair and reasonable, stick to your guns. Most builders like easy jobs that produce good returns in the quickest time possible. They would rather not have to involve themselves in one-off, unique fixtures or finishings. Beware of comments such as, “sorry sir, that’s the way we have always done it,” or, “that’s not the way it’s done in the south-west.”

DON’T settle the final account until you are completely satisfied Your builder will make a final inspection of the property with you on completion of the works. This is the final time to get anything that concerns you off your chest while you have the opportunity. It’s also time to recheck that snag list and to ensure that every minor detail, no matter how small, is attended to. Make sure you don’t part with that final payment until you are entirely happy with the finished job.

DON’T overpay for minor additions or changes With all builds there are always going to be minor changes that will need to be made as

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Luxurious sedan gets impressive facelift

It’s now four years since the release of the current E-Class (W212) and the much anticipated facelift of Mercedes-Benz’s popular sedan is here! Don’t expect just a few minor tweaks, however, as this revised E-Class features plenty to get excited about. With significant styling changes, more equipment as standard, improved engines and a number of new hi-tech gadgets on offer, this revamp is more than just a mid-life tweak. As one of Mercedes-Benz’s most successful models (the current W212 version has sold 700,000 saloons and 100,000 estates worldwide), and with more available variations than any other model (saloon, estate, cabriolet and coupé), any facelift to the E-Class is always going to be a well-planned affair. It’s no surprise then that this latest version comes complete with a raft of innovations. Visually, it’s at the front end of the car where the E-class has undergone its most dramatic change. Out goes the traditional quadheadlamp look to be replaced by one-piece halogen units with the now trademark Mercedes-Benz LED fairy lights. There’s also a more substantial front grille and larger bumper together with, for the first time, two front grille variations. The sportier of which includes the three-pointed star within the grille and for the traditionalists there’s still the option to have the star mounted on the hood. Engine-wise, the entry level E200 Elegance BlueEfficiency features a brand new 2.0 litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which produces 135kW and 300Nm of torque, up by 30Nm over the outgoing model. This new version also comes with a number of extra features as standard, including a self-parking system, emergency breaking, blind-spot monitoring and auto-dimming and folding

door mirrors. The same upgrades have also been applied to the E220 CDI Elegance BlueEfficiency, which costs some $2500 less. The new E250 Avantgarde BlueEfficiency may have increased in price by around $3K but as well as giving it a more potent engine, Mercedes-Benz has added extra features over and above that of the E200 and E220 CDI.

metre Cruiseabout 650. In addition to a number of upgrades and improvements to the line-up, the exciting news for 2013 is that, along with the rest of the Quintrex range over 4.3 metres in length, the entire Cruiseabout model range now comes standard with the Millennium Blade hull, an evolution of the original and award winning Millennium hull. Developed using patented stretch forming technology, the Millennium hull enabled the use of concave shapes, previously only available in fibreglass boats, to create a dead-rise finish and softer ride. Featuring level flotation as standard, the hull was also designed to enable the occupants, motor and gear to remain level and upright in smooth water should the boat become swamped. Launched in 2011, the new improved Blade hull has also added significant improvements in handling, ride and efficiency. Other new features on the 2013 Cruiseabout range include a newly-designed raised top-deck, featuring lower-profile curved windscreens and re-designed dash, a re-designed transom with a smaller outboard well, which is ideal for today’s lighter, more compact outboards, and a new rear lounge that folds neatly away under the transom. For further information on the Quintrex Cruiseabout range, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, or call 9721 3033.

Re-badged bowrider receives impressive upgrade Established in 1945, for almost 80 years Quintrex has been at the heart of the Australian boating scene. As the largest manufacturer of aluminium boats in Australia, the Quintrex brand has become synonymous with innovation, quality and value for money and with over 80 models in the current line-up, there’s plenty of choice for all. Far from resting on its laurels, however, 2013 has seen some of the most significant changes to its range since the introduction of the award-winning Millennium hull just over a decade ago. With several new models launched, including a new series of entry-level half cabins and two new additions to its Hornet series of fishing boats, Quintrex has also revived some classic name-plates first made famous in the 1970’s for its 2013-14 range. With Escape runabouts now re-badged as Fishabouts and Coast Runner runabouts re-badged as Lazeabouts, its best-selling outboard-powered bowriders, formerly known as Freedom Sports, have been re-branded as Cruiseabouts. Renowned for its safe, family-friendly cruising experience, the Cruiseabout line-up features a choice of 8 models ranging in size from the affordable 481 Cruiseabout to the flagship 6.35

Introducing…

Starting New at Golf (SNAG) The fun and easy way to learn golf at any age!

Why don’t more kids take up golf? Well firstly, it’s expensive. A set of clubs, a pair of golf shoes and a few lessons can quickly turn into a few hundred dollars. Then there’s the cost of membership to a club, the various course restrictions that apply to kids and let’s not also forget the degree of difficulty involved in perfecting a perfect swing. In short, it’s a lot easier for kids to go and kick a footie around the local park. The good news, however, for all budding golfers (young or old) is that Starting New at Golf (SNAG), a unique, fun and easy to play golf programme, has recently launched in Bunbury. First developed in the US around 10 years ago, SNAG was officially launched in New Zealand in November 2011 before coming to WA earlier this year. Containing all the elements of golf in a modified form, SNAG can be played anywhere, uses age appropriate equipment and can be played by anyone irrespective of age or ability. Developed by PGA professionals following extensive research, SNAG makes coaching and instructing simple and, through the use of oversized, colourful equipment, makes learning the game great fun. For anyone starting out in the game, there can be nothing more daunting than standing on the first tee at your local club with a crowd of members waiting behind you. With SNAG, players can develop their golf swing in non-traditional venues, such as soccer fields or parks or even in a gym. It offers an ideal way to

introduce the motor skills required of a golf swing in a relaxed, pressure-free environment. Todd Statham, a director and instructor of SNAG in New Zealand, has experienced enormous enthusiasm from over 4000 children that have gone through his programme. “Golf Clubs are looking for new players but the formula that they have used in the past to attract new players is failing. Can-Am Maverick New high-performance

side-by-side UTV added to line-up!

Having been mighty impressed earlier this year with the Can-Am Commander, BRP’s stylish side-by-side UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle), in this issue, we report on its new high-performance UTV, the Can-Am Maverick. With a fast-growing worldwide market in high-performance UTV’s, it wasn’t going to be long before BRP introduced its own version into the market. The result, the Can-Am Maverick, is a tough, exhilarating, side-by-side UTV, which apart from a few common components with its sibling, the Commander, is to all intents and purposes an all-new model from the ground up. Performance-wise, the Maverick sets impressive new standards. With over 15% more horsepower available than the Commander, the Maverick is the first Can-Am to burst through the 100hp barrier, with Can-Am rating it at a feisty 101hp. Fitted with a 976cc, 8-valve, liquid cooled engine with single overhead camshaft, much of the increased performance has been achieved by modifying the air intake and exhaust track. Constructed from an all-new strengthened steel tube frame, the chassis is now twice as rigid as the previous one and with the seating position a full 7 inches further back than on

the Commander, perfect weight balance ensures pin-point handling and rider comfort. At the front, the Maverick features longer dual A-arms, a flat automotive-style air filter and bright dual-halogen lights while inside, there’s an option to have the dual analogue/digital gauge package that pivots with the wheel. However, it’s at the rear where some of the biggest differences can be found. Here, the Maverick has been fitted with the Torsional Trailing A-arms (TTA) suspension package with five separate links. This compact and lighter setup not only reduces unsprung weight, but also vastly enhances traction. Front and rear disc brakes also add to the overall stability of the ride. If all that’s not enough, buyers can upgrade from the standard Maverick to the to the 1000R Xrs. This features 12-inch aluminium beadlock wheels, a custom steering wheel, the X-package seat trim and graphics plus special, fully adjustable ‘Fox Podium X Performance piggyback shocks. For further information on the Can-Am Commander range, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, or call 9721 3033. 32

Check Your Financial Health By Theo Krinos

mobile phone can have an adverse effect on an application. This is a where a qualified mortgage broker can help as he or she can check your credit record and help to address any issues prior to application.

Asset Levels A net asset position has always been a key influence behind the way banks lend money. In short, if you are the type of person who converts income into wealth (or assets) this demonstrates to the lender that you are more likely to make home loan repayments. An applicant who has accumulated a low level of assets by middle age may be focusing more on lifestyle and as such may not be the type of customer that instils confidence. The older the borrower and the higher the income, the higher the expected net asset position.

How does your ‘financial health’ stack up? Well, you might want to get a quick check-up as a borrower’s ‘financial health’ is now increasingly being used by lenders to determine home loan applications. This emphasis on the risk factor attached to customers is nothing new to the insurance industry. Insurers have historically analysed factors, such as a person’s overall health and susceptibility to certain illnesses, for life insurance applications and similarly analysed a customer’s residential area when determining premium levels for home or contents policies. Now, many of these same calculations are being used more and more by banks to determine the risk factor involved in lending to an individual. This complex process is called credit scoring and the statistical profile created can make or break a successful application. So what are the various factors currently being assessed?

Your Postcode The borrower’s suburb or town is also increasingly determining a satisfactory credit score. In recent times, lenders have regularly questioned applications from so-called ‘higher risk’ areas, i.e. areas or postcodes that have above average mortgage arrears or defaults. However, often this is purely the bank’s way of trying to better understand the financial position of a borrower and, again, it is here where a qualified mortgage adviser can offer valuable guidance and advice. Theo Krinos is Finance Manager at The Mortgage Gallery, Bunbury. Located at 32 Stirling Street, he can be contacted on 9791 4177 or email theokrinos@themortgagegallery.com.au

Credit Record A sound credit record means having no outstanding debts. It also helps not having made numerous credit applications in recent months as this can suggest to the bank that you may be a habitual ‘shopper’ for credit. Remember, even a small unpaid bill on a 34

Property Talk

With Greg Gardiner

It’s a common occurrence for us to see many would-be property buyers postponing property purchases before, during and just after a federal election campaign. The election is used as an excuse by both home-buyers and investors. However, we believe that now is the perfect time to take advantage of the market coming off its traditional sluggish mid-year period. It’s a great time to be buying. At Summit Realty South West we have just experienced our busiest July in several years with 66 sales for the month and we are becoming increasingly confident that the market has finally turned the corner. Over the past few months, there has been increasing demand in the sub-$400,000 price range with properties selling quickly and some attracting multiple offers. It’s clear that some major investment clients are starting to buy back into the local market after a 6 or 7 year spell sitting on the sidelines. One of our major clients, for example, has recently bought several properties in a matter of weeks and still requires another 20 in the next month or so. Currently, investment properties priced around the $300,000 mark are in high demand and these sales will put pressure on the product leading up to Christmas time. With properties in the greater Bunbury area representing greater value and offering steady rents, and with borrowing rates now at an 36

Located in seclusion at the end of 2km long private road, this magnificent property enjoys commanding views over the rolling hills and valleys south east of Donnybrook. Earthworks were a challenge with the clay soils needing to be excavated until the rock base was revealed and 2 metres of clean fill were imported. Nothing Ventured ‌.. By Phil Di Candilo

Is now the time for the shrewd investor to return to the market? With Australian consumers saving and paying down debt at record levels over the last few years, many have been consolidating their finances. This means they should be well leveraged to return to the market when it recovers. Following many discussions with business people recently, it would appear that the mining bubble that insulated WA through the GFC may now be close to bursting. WA unemployment is trending upwards and it is a common story to hear of local mining employees consolidating their position and sitting in lower paid jobs to where they were 6 to12 months ago. This may indicate the start of a further contraction in spending and further pain for the retail sector. As we know, when times are tough we avoid discretionary spending. Back to the shrewd investor. If you have been fortunate enough to be able to consolidate your financial position, now is the time to keep your eye on the market. By the market, I refer here to property and ASX listed shares. On both fronts, you don’t need to look far for a great long term acquisition. With a well planned investment portfolio, you should be in a position to be able to buy now and leverage off existing assets. The banks are open for business and want to do deals. Now is the time to discuss pre-approval with your local manager. All investments should be considered for the medium to long term, I am not an advocate for short term gains. Yes, they exist but tread warily. The market is not at the bottom and it may drop further, however, also consider it is a long way from the top and it is the upside that we are investing in. Hence, you need a longer term view to recovery. Low bank borrowing

rates and rental demand will assist to fund your purchase during this time. So where does the accountant fit in? Right now, you may think that the accountant is the person that gets your tax done. This is true, of course, but they offer a great deal more. Consider your accountant as the person to make the right connections to enable your future plans to come together. Accountants can connect you to financial advisors, banks, lawyers, real estate agents and government departments as and when needed. They can break down your financial situation and direct you to the appropriate professional. Only this week, I sat down with a couple and, while the initial appointment was about setting up a self-managed super fund, our two hour meeting ventured into property development opportunities for their investment property, the refinancing of their bank loans, a review of life, TPD and income protection insurance and, to finish off, I took instructions for wills, an enduring power of attorney, a living will and an advanced health directive. And yes, we set up a new SMSF for them as well! If you too would like to have a complete review of your situation, consider us for your next appointment. Do not underestimate the value of your accountant as they do more than just tax. Phil Di Candilo is Director of RSM Bird Cameron Bunbury, part of a full service national accounting group delivering expert corporate financial and advisory accounting services to clients across diverse industry sectors. Photography Tips Keeping it simple

Trying to fit too much into an image can be a trap that many of us amateur photographers regularly fall into. We think the more the better, as the more this will say something about the subject matter or the more it will show about a place. Rarely, though, is this true and there is always a reason why we focus on a particular image, person, place or even object. This should be the main subject of the image. All the other elements within the frame should add to this subject and not distract from it. So what are some of the ways we can keep our subject the centre of attention?

Rule of thirds A generally accepted rule of composition is the “rule of thirds”. When taking your next shot, imagine dividing your image into three equal sections both vertically and horizontally. The point where each section intersects is regarded as a powerful position to place your main subject. The rule of third will work for most types of photography including portraits, architecture, landscapes and action shots.

this to your advantage. Depth of field is a great way to isolate your subject. If you can’t get in close to the subject to get rid of distracting foregrounds or backgrounds, then open up your aperture and reduce the depth of field within the image. This will send the parts of the image that you don’t really want to show out of focus, leaving the viewer to concentrate on the main subject within the image. Of course, the main subject also has the added advantage of bringing a sense of movement and dynamics to your image. Happy snapping!

Get in close Get in close, fill the frame with your subject and keep the composition simple. Don’t let other elements distract from the main reason for the shot.

Use your shutter and aperture The human eye is always drawn towards the part of the image that is in sharp focus, so use 46

Beauty Talk By Niobe Gulley Getting the basics right, like having the perfect eyebrows, can take your makeup to a whole new level. So many of us bypass our eyebrows when applying makeup and yet they are able to shape and frame the face with dramatic effect. Once brows have had a makeover, the face can not only appear much younger but natural beauty can also be enhanced as facial features appear balanced with that added attention drawn to the eyes. Today’s fashion is all about beautifully groomed, full eyebrows, which evoke youthfulness. However, not all of us are blessed with such brows. That’s where makeup comes in as products help to shape, fill in gaps and add depth to our eyebrows. But firstly, it is important to find the ideal shape for your brows. Start by making measurements to find the right shape and use a brow pencil to lightly make a mark after each one. The start of your eyebrow should be directly above the inner corner of the eye. Find it by lining the pencil up from the nostril to the inner corner of the eye and following the line of the pencil. Pivot the pencil from the nostril so that it aligns with the outer corner of the eye and where the pencil meets the eyebrow is where the eyebrow should end. The all important arch of brow is found about two thirds along from the start of the eyebrow. Looking straight into a mirror, this should be right above the outer edge of the eye’s iris.

The start and end of the eyebrow should be at the same horizontal level. Now you have your stencil, it is time to add makeup to perfect the brow. Use an eyebrow brush to gently coax hairs in the right direction and to lift them up for volume. Use short feathery strokes with a brow pencil in order to fill in gaps and to add depth. Getting the colour right for the pencil is essential. Brunettes should generally choose a shade or two lighter than their hair colour. Blondes look natural with a light brown colour – only very fair blondes can suit a golden pencil. Brows for redheads are best dressed in a warm or honey-toned brown. Practice makes perfect but it is advisable to seek help from a professional beauty expert first in order to shape and define your eyebrows into luxurious well-groomed arches. You will receive advice on how to achieve the same look at home. Try to avoid plucking too – this should be left to the professionals! Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room, Bunbury. Visit The Beauty Room this spring and enjoy a complete eyebrow package including design, tint, lymphatic eye massage, eye cream and finishing makeup for just $65. Or, try the mini eyebrow package featuring a wax and tint for $35.

Dr Harvey’s Clinic Part 2 Wrinkle relaxers

Whether we like it or not, we are all going to get wrinkles and in most cases we will have already acquired some! However, the good news is that it is perfectly possible to get long lasting, effective treatment for them. Wrinkles are classified under three different groups. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that are only present during active muscle contractions whereas static wrinkles are present even when the muscle is not used. Usually common in slightly older patients, hyper-dynamic wrinkles occur when the muscles are in an increased state of involuntary contraction. Doctors will be able to recognise these differences and advise on the appropriate treatment. Wrinkle relaxers are made from a bacterial source although no bacteria are actually injected. Presently, the naming of brands is prohibited in Australia but there are currently 2 TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) approved products available. These products have undergone thorough research and have been put through strict testing conditions so always beware of unapproved types available on overseas websites. So how does the treatment work? Put simply, a tiny injection of the product into the appropriate muscle blocks the transmitter chemicals within the nerve impulse that controls the muscle contraction. This causes the muscle to stay in its relaxed and uncontracted position. The practising doctor should have a detailed knowledge of the facial muscles and their functions as well as the corresponding antagonistic (opposing) muscles. This is vital to be able to balance the

functional effect of these muscles to ensure successful treatment. Initial treatment periods vary depending on age, number of treatments undertaken and the severity of the wrinkles but typically they are between 3 and 6 months long. To obtain optimum results, it is recommended to have treatments every 3 months for about a year as keeping the muscle in a sustained condition of inactivity will lead to the muscle taking longer to recover, leading to a reduction in the wrinkle. After 12 months of treatment, patients will usually acquire increased longevity of effect and may then only need to repeat the treatment every 4 to 5 months. There are no long-term effects in muscle action, it will fully recover in time, but the wrinkle will return if treatment is discontinued. The effects from the treatment are usually visible after 3 to 5 days but it may take up to 14 days before the full effect is seen. The doctor can then conduct a review and undertake further treatment, if necessary. Dr Harvey Sacks is dedicated to the advancement and teaching of best practice cosmetic medicine. Introducing ... Dyslexia Diagnostic Clinic Bunbury

Estimated to affect up to 10% of the Australian population, dyslexia is characterised by having a persistent difficulty with reading and spelling. The term was first used by German opthamologist Reinhold Berlin in the 1860’s whilst investigated a group of intelligent patients who, although possessing normal eyesight, had difficulty reading printed words. Definitions of dyslexia often vary amongst various researchers and testers for the condition but generally it is accepted that the condition is caused by a problem with reading and languages and is not related to other factors. However, before a patient can be diagnosed as having dyslexia, it is often necessary to check for other factors to see how much effect they may be having. Visiting a dedicated diagnostic clinic is recommended as a first step in the investigation. Bunbury-based Dyslexia Diagnostic Clinic specialises in the identification and treatment of dyslexia. Based on the Marlston Hill waterfront, the clinic takes patients through a series of tests to determine the extent of the condition. Firstly, the clinic checks for a patient’s difficulty in visual-perceptual processing, known as Irlen Syndrome. This testing process was devised by Helen Irlen, an educational psychologist from the USA. Building on the knowledge that our eyes use colours to read, Irlen discovered that using coloured overlays on print enabled patients to notice a real difference in their reading

abilities. By filtering different colours using overlays and, even more effectively, coloured glasses, she was able to correct problems that occurred in the visual system of dyslexia patients. Once this initial test has been carried out, Dyslexia Diagnostic Clinic then moves on to looking at a range of other factors using simple tests or interview questions. A diagram is then produced to see how much each of these factors may be contributing to the problem. If Irlen Syndrome is present, the clinic will then recommend a process of Irlen therapy. Other testing may also be suggested, such as tutoring, visual and hearing checks and auditory training. Retesting is then carried out after 6 to 12 months to see how much of the other factors have been improved by the use of the filters during the Irlen therapy. From here, a revised plan can be prepared. It is then, after the other factors have been treated or checked, that testing can be done to see if dyslexia is still present. For further information on dyslexia and the testing process or to arrange an appointment, contact Jo Starke at Dyslexia Diagnostic Clinic Bunbury on 9791 8714. Further information is available online at www.ddclinicssw.com.au. The clinic also operates a mobile clinic throughout the south west.

Just like their two-legged owners, dogs can also suffer from pollen allergies at this time of the year. Over the spring and summer months in particular, the number of animals we see with pollen allergies increases significantly. The main difference with dogs is that pollens tend to cause itchy skin rather than the hay fever or asthma seen in their owners. Most dogs with pollen allergies present with itching that affects the ears, paws, belly and armpits although it can occur pretty much on any part of the body. Dog owners will often mistakenly think a dog licking its paws is a normal everyday habit rather than something allergy related. At our clinic, we normally find that early intervention gives the best results. If an allergic skin disease is left untreated, it can quickly lead to infections in the ears and skin, which may require antibiotics, ear drops or medicated shampoos. An allergic skin disease is one of the most common causes of ear infections that we see on a daily basis. Of course, not every dog with itchy skin has a pollen allergy. Around 10% of dogs with itchy skin actually have a food allergy. The main difference with food allergies, however, is that these occur all year-round, whereas pollen allergies tend to be more seasonal depending on what the dog is allergic to. At first, when examining a dog with itchy skin, we will typically take into account the time of the year and secondly ask whether the dog has had skin problems in the past. This then helps us determine the most likely cause. When treating pollen allergies, there are a range of products available. When I see an itchy dog, I always check first for infections in the skin and ears. Often these infections are the main cause of the itching and if we successfully clear up the infections, we generally find the itchiness improves enough

to make the animal comfortable. Almost all dogs with itchy skin benefit from supplementing zinc and fatty acids, such as omega 3, 6 and 9. This helps repair oils in the dog’s coat and helps reduce scratching. In some dogs, itchiness can be reduced by up to as much as 80% and this often avoids the need for more powerful drugs. Antihistamines can be very useful but can also be a bit hit-andmiss as each treatment has about a 30% chance of working in a dog. It can, therefore, often take a bit of trial and error before finding one that works. As a last resort, we may suggest steroids or other immune modulating drugs but by following the above steps we can normally eliminate or reduce the need for these. Dr Braden Collins BSc BVMS CMAVA is Veterinary Surgeon at Bunbury Vet Clinic, 183 Blair Street. Open Mon to Fri 8am to 6am and Saturday 8.30am to 12pm, the clinic also provides an after-hours emergency service. Call 9721 5999 or go online at www.bunburyvetclinic.com.au 55

My Favourite Dish

Ingredients

By Grant Trivett, Owner Sears Cafe

1 pumpkin peeled and chopped 1 finely chopped onion 1 chopped carrot ½ sweet potato peeled and chopped 1 tsp garlic 1 tsp crushed ginger 1 tsp lemongrass root 2 small hot chillies (add more if you like it hot) ½ cup chopped coriander 1 can coconut cream ½ can Massel chicken stock

Thai Pumpkin Soup

Our famous Thai Pumpkin Soup has been on our menu since 2008 and has proven to be extremely popular with customers, especially over the winter months. A vegetarian, gluten-free dish, the recipe was given to me by an old friend, who himself, I believe, had borrowed it from a chef at one of the Rydges Hotels. Since then, my wife, being from Thailand, has refined it to give it more of an authentic northern Thai flavour and creaminess. We grow the herbs, lemon grass and, of course, the hot chillies ourselves and serve the dish all year round. If you would like to have a go at creating it, the recipe and method is listed below, however, be sure to come in and try it here as well!

Method Fry the onion, garlic, ginger, lemongrass and chilli in a little olive oil. Add pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato, chicken stock and just cover the pumpkins with water. Cook until the pumpkin is soft, then blend and add the coconut milk. More stock and chilli can be added if required. Finally, stir in the chopped coriander. Serve.

The above dish is available at Sears Cafe, 52 Victoria Street. The cafe is open 7 days from 7.00am for breakfast and lunch. 56

Live simply

they are so easy to grow and add to a stir fry or salad. I grow Asian greens like bok choy and tatsoi, kale (of which there are many different varieties), mustard greens (these really do taste like mustard and give any dish a boost), rocket and spinach. Last year, I planted warrigal greens, also called New Zealand spinach. This self-sows so easily that you will have it forever to pick and enjoy. Warrigal greens are cultivated as a vegetable in Indonesia and are fleshier than English spinach. Fresh herbs are great to have on hand. In the café, we make a flavoursome salad that includes oven-roasted sweet potato with a dressing of fresh sage sizzled in olive oil with garlic. This is all tossed together with steamed and seasoned Quinoa (keen-wah) grain. The taste is sensational and can only really be obtained with the herby earthiness of fresh sage as dried sage just doesn’t do it. That recipe is reason enough to have fresh herbs on hand at the back door! Most herbs and spices also have the extra bonus of having medicinal qualities, ginger and chillies being the best stimulation to a sluggish metabolism. So get yourself a funky watering can, a quirky mortar and pestle and simply savour the freshness of life. Annie Malone is the proprietor of The Natural Temptation Café, 47 Stephen Street, Bunbury.

With a little spice! By Annie Malone

Fresh is always best and eating fruit and vegetables grown locally in season is a very good thing for your health and the planet. Less cold storage and handling means more vitamins and mineral benefits. Local produce travels less kilometres, which means less carbon emissions. Just by making that simple choice to eat fresh can set in motion a whole chain of positive outcomes for us all. Even closer to home, growing and eating some delicacy from your own garden is one of the pleasures of living, in my world anyway! If you have never tried this, I urge you to try it and come and tell me if I’m not right. It also makes you appreciate the time it takes to grow food and a very good reason to savour every mouthful when consumed. Think of the strawberry that has been slowly ripening as the sun kisses it every morning and eventually ahh… it’s ripe enough to pick. Will it make it to the table? No way, eat it in the garden! If you want to grow a few things in your garden or in pots to enhance your health and your cooking, greens and herbs are a great place to start. Greens mmm….. I even feel more energetic just by saying the word, and 58

Geographe Wineries to Receive Government Grants Some good news for two Geographe wineries has been recently announced by Senator the Hon Don Farrell, the Minister Assisting for Tourism. Both Ferguson Valley-based St Aidan Wines and Donnybrook-based Barton Jones are 2 of 89 recipients nationally who will qualify for part of an $8.5m spend under the 2013 round of T-QUAL grants to help build regional tourism. With the Geographe wine region being increasingly recognised as a key regional tourist destination, the development of these 2 properties is designed to provide a range of new facilities to include wine interpretation, functions, events and other tourism experiences. St Aidan Wines plans to continue to develop an already successful winery, cellar door and 60

Having developed a distinct range of wines by focusing on growing alternative varieties from Spain and Portugal, Donnybrook-based winery Mazza Wines has recently enjoyed some remarkable success in a new UK wine competition. Following a visit to WA, a prominent UK wine buyer nominated Mazza Wines to be featured in the new Winestars competition, a global event attracting hundreds of entries. The winery went on to achieve an extraordinary top ten place in Winestars World with one of the leading UK buyers judging the event commenting that Mazza Wine’s Tempranillo was one of the best examples of the variety they had tried outside of Spain. The competition is a win-win for judges and finalists alike. Judges are can place orders with the finalists, and small winery entrants like Mazza Wines suddenly appear

Stay and sample the new Paterson Reserve Merlot and discover what all the fuss is about, and guests and visitors can now purchase a cute new coffee mug that has recently been added to the gift range. Further news is that bottling for the 2013 vintage is now all in the new lean and green bottle range which is approximately 25% lighter than standard glass, easier to handle, lighter to post, which, of course, all leads to a considerable reduction in the winery’s carbon footprint. News from Mandalay Road Wines is its release of a Mandalay Road Muscat, perfect for those colder evenings. Talisman Wines

Located in the heart of the stunning Ferguson Valley and surrounded on 3 sides by Wellington National Park, family-owned Talisman Wines is quickly forging an impressive reputation. Featuring 9.5 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet, Malbec and Zinfandel, as one of the highest vineyards in the Geographe region, the winery has been able to produce consistently award-winning Riesling with all 4 vintages having been awarded 90 points or more by James Halliday. Owned by Kim and Jenny Robinson and managed by daughter Anita, vines were first planted on the property in 1999 and Talisman was officially launched in 2009. Since then, the team, which includes Vineyard Manager Victor Bertola and Winemaker Peter Stanlake, has

won over 75 medals at various regional, national and international shows. The awards include Best Alternative Red for its 2009 Zinfandel, Most Successful Small Producer and Most Successful Producer at its very first Geographe Wine Show in 2010. With a Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Malbec, Shiraz, Cabernet Malbec and Zinfandel produced each year and plans for a future cellar door, wines are currently available for sale online or through good independent bottle shops. With a focus on producing wines that are true to the vineyard and that express the team’s passion for aromatic, rich and vibrant wines, a strong sense of humour also prevails. The Latin inscription on the Talisman crest reads, “Nemo Saltat Sobrius”, meaning, “No one dances sober”.
