Summer Fashion
There’s also a softer ladylike trend emerging in the form of pretty, floral tea-party dresses, silk slips and little kitten heels. Lace panels add to the romantic feel. The Eastern feminine trend is carrying on from spring too with dresses, shell tops and cropped jackets featuring intricate blossoms. Metallic accessories really set this look off. Metallic shimmer and shine is a big part of summer with sequins and detailing on tops and dresses. Another trend emerging is all about ruffles whether as a peplum, as a frill along the hem of a skirt, or on a dress. It’s feminine and adds fun to simple items. For men, they can do no wrong if they follow the nautical theme. As well as the striped tees, the classic yachting windbreaker, very popular during the European summer, is a perfect cover up for a cool evening. For pants, try chinos rolled up to the ankle with loafers or slip-ons.
Trend alerts for the season
Summer is ablaze with colours and trends, making it an incredibly eclectic season. There’s no need to stick to one look, have fun and flip from one style to another every day. It’s been edging its way into outfits for a couple of seasons and now that the sun is invariably shining, the crop top is a certain fixture for this season. High waisted shorts, pants and skirts with a cropped top will give a flattering look with a little strip of skin revealed. For the daytime, wear a pair of faded boyfriend jeans, rolled up to the ankle, with a snug little crop top or add a chambray shirt loosely over the top and slip on some heels. Denim, whether it’s distressed, vintage washed or soft blue will be a summer hit, not that denim ever goes out of fashion. Look out for sleeveless and cropped denim shirts, loose chambray shirts, utility pants and shorts. Shirred waist bands help to give a relaxed, summery look. White is a great pairing with denim but white on white is even more striking. Tailored white shirts look fabulous with narrow white pants as will shirts with sheer panels and cut outs. It’s an androgynous look that can be exaggerated with an over-sized white blazer yet, with fine gold accessories and towering heels, you can easily add femininity and sophistication. We can’t go too far without mentioning the colour combination of black and white. It is clearly a trans-seasonal fashion hit and right now monochrome prints of all sorts are everywhere. Try mixing up the prints for a dramatic look, although remember it is most successful when lines of clothes are kept simple.

We all know how good fruit is for us right? So get ready to wrap your fashion tastebuds around this season’s veritable fruit salad of goodies from ShoeBeDoo ... with a side of flowers ...
Fruity ... Crisp apple, sweet orange and zingy lime sandals are bursting out of boxes from Zeta and Gaimo of Spain. Peter Kaiser of Germany takes us under the sea with one-of-a-kind ocean flowers and coral designs on flats and heels, whilst Hogl has us in a raspberry pink daze.
Floral ... Fashion On The Field focused? Delicious arm candy and headpieces from Olga Berg will have the fellas neighing trackside. And flowing on from a year of retro-tastic fashion, Poetic Licence from the UK evoke the 40’s in a delightful bloom of colour and detail, with heels that are perfect for parties, picnics and other lawn based activities. Croquet anyone???
Feminine ... Pretty up your new hot look with a bouquet of leather flowers hand stitched on a pair of high peeptoe pumps. Miss Dreaming from Peeptoe is ever so perfect. Just slip on a bright violet dress, accessorize with a neon yellow clutch and yowza. Get ready for the cracking of the heads as they whip around to take in your perfection So my advice? Evoke the four “fs”. Steady on girl, we’re talking fresh, funky, feminine and floral. All at ShoeBeDoo. All ever so yummmmm ......

Outdoor Living
Making the most of your outdoor space
With more hours of sunshine that any other state, Western Australia provides the perfect climate for those who enjoy the outside life. Not only are we blessed with hot dry days, we also enjoy gloriously balmy evenings perfect for entertaining family and friends. So how can we make the most of our outside space at this time of the year?
that provide relaxing areas for socialising, i.e. don’t fall into the trap of arranging all of your chairs up against one outside wall. Position your furniture just as you would in your indoor living areas and create the intimate feel of a lounge area or living room. Finally, try and experiment with brighter colours. Complement the tones and hues of your garden with colourful cushions and throws and embrace the outdoors.
Outdoor Kitchen The ultimate statement in outdoor living, the outdoor kitchen is all the rage. After all, if the kitchen is the centre of the home inside, then it should follow that an outdoor kitchen creates the same great entertaining area outside. So get rid of that tired old BBQ and, if the bank balance is willing, transform your outside space with a grill, fridge, sink and maybe even a pizza oven or wine storage area. You’ll be the envy of your friends, family and neighbours. Plus, you’ll never have to make those trips between the inside cooker and the outside table again!
Underfoot Cracked, dirty or uneven paving slabs can soon take the edge off a well-planned outdoor entertainment area. If the area is uncovered, poured liquid limestone is the perfect, low-maintenance, stylish way to smarten up the outside space. The combination of stone and cement makes it extremely strong and durable whilst even on the hottest days it remains cool underfoot. Plus, being poured as one piece there are no gaps for unsightly weeds to grow through or burrowing ants to form anthills. Just seal it once it goes down and remember that in the event of needing to access burst pipes underneath, it’s not possible to just remove one slab!
Furnishings Furnishing your outside area is one of the keys to creating a comfortable and versatile outdoor living space. Create workable spaces

Bi-fold Doors
Decking is an increasingly popular way of creating a natural, luxurious feel to an outside area. Again, ideal in summer conditions, a deck is a real statement in style. Generally a more expensive option than pavers, its drawback is that once down it will require regular maintenance including oiling at least twice a year and sanding. If you can put up with that and the odd scratch from overactive kids, it will transform the look of an outside area.
The phrase ‘bringing the outside in’ was tailor-made for bi-fold doors. Incredibly stylish whether made from hardwood or aluminium, they open up a world of possibilities for the entertaining area. Recent innovations mean that it’s now possible to buy bi-folds with retractable flyscreens. Simply open up your doors, draw the screen across and your outside entertaining space connects as one with the inside.
Lighting
Plants
Just like inside the home, the mood and ambience of an outdoor living area is often influenced by the lighting. Choosing the right lighting will create an inviting area for spending time after dark whilst lighting up popular areas of the garden. Try installing LED lights in decking or in the roof of a pergola. Use solar powered lighting to create walkways or to highlight plants, and use lanterns or candles to create a soft ambience.
In the same way that accessories complement furniture, well thought out and cleverly arranged plants can add the ideal finishing touch. In our harsh climate, try to pick water-wise plants that will survive without constant watering and space them out to create a structured feel. Cordylines are perfect for creating low cost, low maintenance, colourful borders around entertaining areas.

Who’s New?
Mustard Tree Interiors
Located in Victoria Street, next to Buck’s Diner and opposite the Bunbury tower, Mustard Tree Interiors is a recently opened home interiors store offering a selection of fascinating wooden furniture, homewares and gifts. The range in-store incorporates vintage, new and restored pieces. Owned and operated by Wendy Castledine and husband Ross, the shop is the latest in a long line of retail businesses run by the enterprising couple. Having previously owned second-hand stores in Geraldton, Mandurah and Donnybrook, Wendy also ran Bunbury-based Play it Again, a recycled ladies’ boutique in Stirling Street before operating a Bed and Breakfast business from her Victoria Street home. Following a successful period selling painted and restored furniture through Rustic French Living at Boyanup, Wendy was inspired and encouraged by owner Jo McIntosh to once again run her own retail store. With a passion for revitalising furniture, and with husband Ross an innovative repairer and restorer of furniture, the idea for Mustard Tree Interiors was born and the store opened for business early September. Inside, find an eclectic assortment of wooden furniture, including a range of everyday restored English oak furniture, vintage pieces
and a number of painted and redecorated items. Sourced from both Australia and Asia, many of the pieces on display have been completely restored offering a unique, one-of-a-kind look to any room. In addition to the wooden furniture, Mustard Tree Interiors stocks a range of seagrass veranda-style chairs and tables, seagrass mats and cane baskets in various sizes. There’s also a fantastic range of homewares and gifts, including quilted cotton throws, quilts and cushions, pure linen tablecloths and tea towels alongside a selection of Christian gifts and much more. Visit Mustard Tree Interiors at 42 Victoria Street. 30

Quintrex Cruiseabout 610 Class-leading bowrider now with new improved hull
In the previous edition of The Bunbury Life, we reported on Quintrex’s recent re-branding of its popular range of family-friendly boats, including the re-badging of its best-selling outboard-powered bowriders from Freedom Sports to Cruiseabouts. With a choice of over 10 different bowrider models, ranging from the 4.96 metre Cruiseabout 480 up to the flagship 6.35 metre Cruiseabout 650, the sturdy 6.16 metre Cruiseabout 610 is one of the largest in the line-up. In fact, it was the largest until the recent release of the 650. Updated for 2013, this sporty looking bowrider now comes fitted with the brand new Millennium Blade hull, an evolution of the original award-winning Millennium hull famous for its dead-rise finish and soft ride. The new improved Blade hull, together with its flared bow, adds significant improvements in handling, ride and efficiency, offering a sharper entry into the water. This allows the boat to power through the swell with ease whilst at the same time keeping occupants dry and comfortable. As expected on a boat of this size, there’s
plenty of room, enough for 8, and plenty of storage under the bow seats, underfloor and in the rear transom lounge. This makes it the perfect boat for enjoying an extended day out on the water whether fishing, water skiing or just simply cruising. A newly designed raised top-deck providing greater driver visibility features lower-profile curved windscreens together with a stylish redesigned dash. The redesigned transom provides a smaller outboard well, ideal for today’s lighter, more compact outboards, and the newly improved rear lounge folds neatly away under the transom to help maximise room on those big fishing trips. Moulded side panels, including deep storage pockets and cup holders, add to its practicality. Taking performance, handling and versatility to a whole new level, the Cruiseabout 610 is a continuation in the long line of Quintrex success stories. For further information on the Quintrex Cruiseabout 610, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, or call 9721 3033.

Get Fit at The Rink
Classes are a relaxing, stress free experience that aims to bring peace and movement to the busy body and mind. Perfect for beginners, participants are guided towards the long term benefits of practising yoga whilst learning to slow down and breathe more easily. Available at The Rink from next year are Mat Pilates sessions. Designed to focus on improving tone and flexibility, these sessions encourage better posture and more efficient movement, connecting the body and mind to work hand in hand together. TRX suspension classes are also now open for bookings. A highly effective bodyweight training tool, this system leverages gravity and bodyweight to perform hundreds of exercises. With this workout, participants are in complete control of how far they want to push themselves by simply adjusting the body position to add or decrease resistance. A fast, powerful total body workout, classes help build a rock-solid core, increase muscle endurance and they are of benefit to people of all fitness levels. Finally, recovery sessions use a combination of foam roller (a technique used by athletes and physical therapists to inhibit overactive muscles), trigger point therapy and yoga stretching. Covering a number of different body areas and releasing muscle tension, again this benefits people of all ages and abilities. To find out more about these new classes and programmes, contact The Rink on 9725 6999 or visit the centre at Gibbons Road, Bunbury.
As one of the leading national centres for both roller and inline skating, The Rink is well known for its regular skating programmes and highly successful coaching team. Based on Gibbons Road in the Halifax light industrial area, skaters of all ages and abilities from around the south west regularly flock to its all year round sessions. Exciting news is that, new for this summer, visitors to the centre can now participate in a range of fitness and yoga classes. With skating having been long associated with keeping fit and healthy, these new classes, introduced by owner Susan Brooks, are a natural extension of The Rink experience. Having run The Rink since 1999, former national champion, coach and mentor Susan Brooks has always wanted to expand on the activities available at the centre. Introduced through her love of yoga and the fitness industry in general, the additional classes are also a way of supporting her elite skaters and, in her words, “my ageing body. Yoga classes at The Rink are performed in a slow, gentle Hatha style, focusing on physical and mental strength.

Our country covers a vast area, with many areas still completely unexplored, and over the years I have discovered a vast array of beautiful minerals, fossils and gemstones. I have also spent many happy hours gem cutting, otherwise referred to as lapidary. This hobby includes the art of Tumbling, creating beautifully polished round stones, Cabbing, hand cutting on a grinder polisher, and Faceting, where a perfectly cut stone, like a diamond, is created. If you are thinking of fossicking for gemstones you may come across some just off the bitumen track of major highways or it may require some full on adventure with your 4x4. One thing is for sure, exploring the bush and camping outside whilst enjoying the peace and quiet is hard to explain unless experienced. Before setting out, always remember to take with you a few basic essentials. In WA, you need to obtain a Miner’s Right, which is available at any Mining Registrar’s office. They may also be purchased at the Department of Minerals and Energy. It also pays to remember basic tools such as a rock pick and shovel and
to take enough water and food. Do your research before you set off, plan your trip, get familiar with the roads and take a detailed map. If you’re lucky the food eaten and fuel used will be replaced with an even greater weight in rocks for the journey home. Don’t forget, there will also be some fabulous photo opportunities not only during the day but also during the night whilst enjoying the campfire and star lit skies. There’s nothing better than getting out into the fresh air in search of that next perfect piece, so don’t forget your camera to record your trip. Hope to see you on the road sometime! Is Your Investment Loan Tax Efficient? By Theo Krinos
Maximising tax deductions on an investment property loan is one of the key considerations for property investors. Through a combination of the right advice and smart money management, investors can significantly reduce their annual tax bill and save thousands of dollars over the term of a loan. A key part of this strategy for most investors is the negative gearing of assets, in other words, when the cost of owning a property exceeds the income it produces, leading to a tax rebate at the end of the financial year. Although a widely used strategy, we regularly see property investors either failing to maximise tax deductions or muddying the waters with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) over areas such as using redraw facilities on investment loans. For investors with surplus funds, it’s always wise to pay down the loan on the principal place of residence before reducing the loan on an investment property. Quite simply, tax relief is not available on a home, whereas it is on an investment. Therefore, it makes far more sense to firstly pay off debt that has no taxable benefit. For investors who have surplus funds but perhaps have already paid off the home loan,
simply parking that cash into an investment loan can be fraught with difficulty, particularly if they plan to use the redraw facilities on the account at a later date. Whilst reducing interest paid is fundamentally a good strategy, if these funds are required down the track for a car or holiday, this then causes potential confusion over what part of the interest for that loan is now tax deductible. Although the original purpose of the loan was for investment purposes, the investor has now well and truly muddied the waters with the ATO. A far better idea is to use an offset account, which is considered separate from a home loan account. Additional payments can be made in this account and withdrawn when necessary without risking the wrath of the ATO. Ultimately, putting funds into an offset account has exactly the same effect as paying funds directly into an investment loan to reduce interest but keeps it clean from a taxation perspective. If you are sitting around waiting for the bottom of the market - sorry, you’ve missed it! Spring has sprung, the buyers are out and about and sales activity is strong. At Summit Realty South West, we have just had one of our best ever months with 57 listings sold in September, a performance that put us as the top Summit Realty office in the state (REIWA). As a consequence of this increased activity, the market has bottomed, prices are tightening and we should see some incremental increases over the next few months. Strong activity in the lower end of the market, mainly from investors and first home buyers taking advantage of the existing grant, is leading us to believe that prices will be rising for the first time in five or six years. Planning for Retirement
How much is enough? By Phil Di Candilo
Time has never really been on anyone’s side when trying to accumulate sufficient wealth for retirement. With the demands on one’s finances, including the purchasing of the family home, child education, health, plus the regular day to day expenses, not much is left over. The key to a successfully funded retirement is understanding the likely income required. Lifestyle choices planned once retired will obviously be a major factor but one of the most commonly underestimated factors is life expectancy. Various data will explain average life expectancies but with modern medicines and care many people live well beyond these stated averages. Health can also substantially influence retirement income needs. Although we are now living longer, retirees will spend on average ten plus years in retirement with some form of medical condition or disability. Another factor is what you plan do in your retirement. If jumping in a 4WD and travelling the country whilst maintaining a home in the suburbs is the plan then your cost of living is about to go up. Even taking into account some of the factors outlined above, global financial issues and local and national environmental events can also have a substantial impact on retirement wealth. If when commencing retirement the markets take a dive, then a retiree’s funds may end up short of the planned retirement figure. For this reason, when planning, conservative assumptions should be the rule of thumb. This will help to put a buffer in wealth accumulation strategies to help ride out any unforeseen events. So the question remains, how much is enough? Well, as indicated above, how much is
needed will be determined by considering lifestyle choices and possible health issues. Determining these factors to the best of one’s ability will help to formulate the required annual income. Assumptions will also need to be made on investments and their future performance and savings plans will also need to be adhered to. With recent restrictions on superannuation contributions it is important to look at all options when accumulating wealth for retirement as well as evaluating likely income requirements in retirement. Once this information is at hand the following questions can be answered:Do you have sufficient wealth saved to achieve your desired income in retirement? Or, are you on target to do so? Is your accumulated wealth structured effectively to provide a tax effective and regular income in retirement? Is your wealth invested and if so, is it an appropriately diversified portfolio which matches your attitude to investment risk to minimise volatility in both your capital and investment returns? Making this assessment early will give you more time to put in place an appropriate plan to achieve those financial goals. Developer sought for Bunbury waterfront project
The development of Bunbury’s waterfront is set to again gather pace with the recent announcement that LandCorp are seeking a developer to construct a landmark building at Lot 1, Koombana North. With the area having been transformed over the past decade with the completion of the Marlston Hill mixed-use residential area and the Marlston Waterfront precinct, Koombana North is the latest development in the ongoing vision for the waterfront. Lot 1, Koombana North is the project’s signature and largest mixed-use site and will
create a major new entry statement to the city. Lands Minister for the State Government, Brendon Grylls has stated that the 1,150sqm lot will allow a building of up to 6 storeys with 25 residential apartments and approximately 860sqm of hospitality, retail and commercial space on the ground floor. “Every apartment and most businesses will have prime water views across the expansive Koombana Bay and there is the potential for views across Leschenault Inlet and the Indian Ocean,” said Mr Grylls. “The EOI offers a unique chance for developers to make a significant 48

contribution to the continued growth of Western Australia’s largest regional city.” With $20.3 million allocated by the State Government to develop Koombana North, the precinct will eventually feature 5 mixed-use buildings within landscaped public surrounds. There is also planning provision for a future train platform on the southern edge of the development area. The brief for developers, released by LandCorp, is to come up with a building design that provides a gateway to the city, reflecting both the beauty and majesty of Koombana Bay. The
area already includes grassed barbecue areas, boardwalk and cycle paths, a viewing platform across the bay and improved access to the adjoining ski beach with a buried sea wall protecting against erosion. “We’ve worked very closely with the City of Bunbury and carried out extensive consultation with the community and business groups to ensure the Koombana North development enhances the liveability of the city,” said Mr Grylls.

The most striking feature externally is the extensive use of Yallingup limestone cap rock cladding, which contrasts with the grey Modwood decking and grey travertine floor tiles. Each of the five bedrooms has its own bathroom with the master suite, located on the first floor, enjoying commanding views of Geographe Bay to Dunsborough. Cedar lining was also used for external and internal ceilings, adding warmth and complementing the pallet perfectly. Mercedes-Benz CLA
The all-new 4-door coupé with jaw-dropping looks!
That well-used expression, ‘first impressions count’, should have been created just for the Mercedes Benz CLA. Here at The Bunbury Life, our first glimpse of the car was a few months ago on the Mercedes-Benz portal. Captivated by its sweeping curves and thrilling lines, it was one of those moments that sticks in the memory. Now a few months on as we finally view this magnificent new addition to the Mercedes range, we can report that the CLA is just as impressive, if not more so, in the flesh. Pitched between the A-Class and C-Class, the CLA is in some ways a slightly difficult car to pigeon-hole. This is most certainly a compliment. Historically, all great designs when first sighted create the same conundrum and the new CLA is no different. Described by some as an extended A-Class and taking inspiration from the SLK, its similarity though to the gorgeous CLS is unmistakeable. Almost ten years on from the launch of that ground-breaking 4-door coupé, a car considered the prettiest of all Mercedes-Benz models, the CLA takes its cue from that sleek, stylish package to create a beautifully scaled down version that loses none of the CLS glamour. The wonderful, sloping roofline is not just about the looks though. Its wind resistance properties give the car a drag coefficient of 0.23, meaning it cuts through the air more efficiently than any other car on the market. Now that’s impressive! Available in four different guises, this front-wheel drive sedan starts at around $49,900 plus on-road costs. So yes, it’s affordable too! The three-strong petrol line-up includes the CLA 200, CLA 250 Sport and the CLA 45 AMG whilst the diesel offering is the CLA 200 CDi. Initially, in Australia, it’s just the CLA 200 and CLA 45 AMG available, with the 250 Sport and 200 CDi planned for early 2014. The 4-cylinder 1.6 litre CLA 200, fitted with 7G-DCT automatic transmission is likely to be the popular choice with buyers. Delivering 115kW of power and 250Nm of torque and capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in around 8.5 seconds, it effortlessly achieves its top speed of 210km/h. A combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.7 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions of just 133g/km add to the appeal. Local Artisans Brenda Ellen
Glass artist, designer and gallery owner, Brenda Ellen’s passion for art, primarily glass art, was born out of a strong interest to travel and experience different cultures and their unique artistic skills. For as long as she can remember, expression through art has been her single biggest source of inspiration. It was back in 1985 that the journey first began. Spending three years travelling through Indonesia, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas and the Pacific, an interest in third world art and design was awakened. Brenda instantly related to the people, the beauty and isolation of the landscapes and the strength of colour, tone and textures of its art. After basing herself in the UK, having absorbed a multitude of tribal art forms, a number of different visits to galleries and cathedrals introduced her to the exciting possibilities of using glass as a way of expressing her thoughts. ‘I chose the medium of glass to guide me; I found it challenging, provocative and visually dramatic,” says Brenda. Upon returning to Australia in 1990, Brenda embarked on her first career steps. She began by learning the ancient art of leading panels before moving on to stained glass and lead lighting. The combination of her love of glass and design was the perfect match and to
further enhance a perspective on architectural aspects of design, Brenda completed her Diploma in Interior Design and Decoration. In 1992, Brenda registered herself as a professional glass artist and began taking on commissions for both domestic residences and public buildings. Her work was featured in different galleries throughout Perth and surrounding areas and, as well as teaching in other glass studios, Brenda taught various art glass principles from a private studio and at tertiary institutions for Adult Community Education courses. In 2013, Brenda realised one of her major ambitions by opening her own glass art gallery and studio. LAVA Art Glass Gallery and Studio, based on the Marlston Hill waterfront, showcases not only Brenda’s own glass art but also glass art from a variety of prominent award-winning Western Australian artists. In addition to the gallery experience, the art space is also a working studio that runs regular workshops and courses for anyone who has an interest in working with glass. Beauty Talk By Niobe Gulley New fragrances for a new season As the name suggests, Modern Muse, the new perfume from Estée Lauder, is intended to encapsulate today’s sensual, independent and confident woman. It’s an intriguing and inspiring mix with the fragrance capturing the complexity of a feminine yet dynamic woman by combining quite different notes within its ingredients. There is a definite contrast between the sparkling Jasmine Sambac with citrus fruits and the sleek woody notes derived from blending two patchouli essences. This allows Modern Muse to be fresh and warm at the same time and to be interpreted in different ways, thereby appealing to a greater range of women. The fragrance is soft delicate pink in colour and packaged in a beautifully classic bottle. Si is the new fragrance from Giorgio Armani. Also intending to epitomise the modern woman, Armani’s offering is full of personality. “Si”, meaning “yes” in Italian, is a name that will resonate with women who say yes to life and love and are proud to be female. The boldness comes through with an intensity derived from ingredients that include blackcurrant and vanilla. Then there is a warmth and sultriness that pervades the fragrance courtesy of patchouli and amber. And, to add a sweet softness, there is rose and jasmine. It is certainly a captivating fragrance; full-bodied while also managing to possess a graceful femininity. The interesting mix will almost certainly appeal to a wide demographic.
For a classic fragrance, timeless and floral, the choice has to be Chanel No 5. What’s new is that Chanel has created special products that layer the scent and allow the wearer to enjoy it in different ways. Chanel has formulated bath, body and hair products that all work seamlessly with the original No 5 Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau Première and Eau de Toilette. Women can now select a No 5 Foaming Bath, Bath Soap or Cleansing Cream for the shower. To moisturise, there is the Body Lotion or Velvet Body Cream, and there is also a body deodorising spray. To add an extra touch of luxury to the new perfuming ritual, Chanel have created a delicate Hair Mist as well as an indulgent Intense Bath Oil, which can be added to water, turning it milky. All the products are beautifully packaged and will make wearing Chanel No 5 even more pleasurable than ever before! Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room. Two destinations in one location in the Stirling Centre, Bunbury, for all your beauty needs.

As we age, an increasing number of superficial lines will appear including lateral smile lines, top lip lines, forehead lines and, of course, crow’s feet. Wrinkle fillers or dermal fillers, however, can offer a highly effective solution to these increasing lines. The most commonly used fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring polysaccharide (sugar substance) that is prevalent both in our skin and other parts of the body. As the most important space-filling substance in the body, by holding water it keeps our collagen hydrated and our skin fuller and more youthful. The successes provided by dermal fillers continue to grow with the increasing amount of research and development now being focused into this area. And exciting news is that Allergan, the world’s largest producer of anti-ageing injectables, has recently released a pair of brand new, longer-lasting fillers onto the market. Both these are fillers are currently available at our clinic and results have been impressive. These new fillers Volbella and Volift contain Vycross ™, a unique patented technology that uses an innovative hyaluronic acid gel. As well
as offering more natural, longer-lasting results, there is also minimal swelling and a reduced risk of bruising. Volbella is mainly used for around the lips and eyes with results lasting up to 12 months. This is almost double the length of time of the previous Allergan product and what’s more, with the reduced risk of bruising and swelling, it’s even possible to return to work the same day. Volift is used in the folds around the mouth and effects can last for up to 15 months! Like its sister product, there is a considerably reduced risk of clumping leading to smoother and more natural results, again with less swelling. Providing a highly versatile option for patients, the product is perfect for those seeking a discreet look and feel. Who’s New?
Jeanette Elliott Dermal Therapy
Skin revision and IPL clinic Located inside the Greater Bunbury Medical Clinic, Jeanette Elliott’s skin revision and IPL clinic offers a range of non-invasive procedures tailored to producing effective results in the treatment and management of skin conditions. New to Bunbury, the clinic treats and manages a range of conditions including acne, acne scarring, pigmentation, rosacea and the effects of sun damage and skin aging to create healthier, younger looking skin. The clinic also offers permanent and pain free hair reduction using a professional medical IPL platform for problematic and unwanted hair. After several years owning the award-winning Chelsea Skin Clinic in Nedlands, Perth, Jeanette believes the initial consultation is the foundation for the success of any treatment plan. By establishing cause and relating its effect to skin structure and function, the correct treatment program can be employed to ensure a successful outcome with long-term benefits. On the first visit to the clinic, clients are asked to fill out a patient intake form to make the clinic aware of any allergies, medical conditions and medications or any diet and lifestyle factors that might affect any treatment and skin management plan. Using a state-of-the-art computerised analysis and imaging system to provide easy to understand reports, the skin then undergoes a further examination and assessment to help prescribe an appropriate treatment and skin management plan.
Employing products, treatment protocols and technology that have proven clinical outcomes, the clinic uses new, innovative and results-driven methods to:• Remove the dead skin cell build-up which leads to the appearance of dry skin, fine lines, congested skin or skin discolouration. • Rebuild skin by encouraging the skin’s vital internal processes to function optimally. This in turn enables cells to stay alive longer and perform at their highest potential, creating healthier, younger looking skin. • Protect the skin from the sun, free radicals, glycation and other environmental factors that lead to premature ageing using potent natural antioxidants. • Maintain beautiful healthy skin with home prescriptives that work to prolong the achieved results. Jeanette Elliott is a fully qualified and nationally accredited Dermal Clinician with many years’ experience providing advanced skin revision, rejuvenation and management of skin conditions. Now bringing her expertise to the south west region, her new clinic is located in the Greater Bunbury Medical Centre. Initial consultations are complimentary and obligation free. Where possible, treatments and protocols are combined into a package with a cost saving to the client. To make an appointment call her on 9791 7938. 64

Dental Care By Braden Collins One of the most common problems we see in ageing dogs is dental disease. While dental problems are an expected part of the ageing process, providing good care of our pet’s teeth can have significant benefits for their health and wellbeing. The early signs of dental disease are often quite subtle. A redness of the gums and a build-up of calculus can sometimes be seen by lifting up the lips and, when close to the animal, bad breath (halitosis) can often be noticeable. As the problem progresses, we rarely find that animals show any outward signs of pain. We often see owners of dogs with tooth root abscesses unaware that the dog had a problem until its face started to swell, however once the teeth have been removed or treated, the dog will be noticeably happier and more active – even puppy-like in behaviour. Cats are more likely to show signs of pain when eating, often approaching the food bowl as if hungry then backing away quite quickly. Dental disease can have wide-ranging effects on an animal’s body. A recent study showed that dogs with advanced dental disease had a significantly higher risk of liver or kidney damage. This is due to the presence of large amounts of bacteria that are able to enter the bloodstream from the diseased mouth and then filtered out by these organs. Good dental care starts at home and diet is a main factor in influencing an animal’s dental health. Food can be used to physically clean the teeth through a scraping action. Animals that are fed a diet entirely of tinned or soft food will be at an increased risk of dental disease as the soft food does little in the way of physically cleaning instead leaving teeth coated in food remnants, encouraging bacterial growth. The use of bones to help keep teeth clean is controversial. Chewing bones carries the risk of tooth fractures, bones becoming stuck or
constipation. Personally, in most cases I think the benefits outweigh the risks so I do recommend feeding bones. Bones should always be raw and avoid bones like chop or neck bones that could become stuck if swallowed whole. If the pet has a history of constipation, pancreatitis or other related illnesses, talk to your vet before feeding bones. Specialised diets specifically designed to protect a pet’s teeth can be fed and the Australian Veterinary Dental Association also recommends brushing your pet’s teeth daily. There are even chicken and beef flavoured toothpastes for pets now! The next time you’re close to your pet, have a quick look at its teeth and gums. If it already has established dental disease then treatment at the vets will often be needed. Otherwise, a few simple ideas can help prevent a big problem. Dr Braden Collins BSc BVMS CMAVA is Veterinary Surgeon at Bunbury Vet Clinic, 183 Blair Street. Open Mon to Fri 8am to 6am and Saturday 8.30am to 12pm, the clinic also provides an after-hours emergency service. Call 9721 5999 or go online at www.bunburyvetclinic.com.au 66

Avoiding hidden sugar in foods
So called ‘healthy’ foods may not always be what they seem. Here are 10 foods that often contain large amounts of hidden sugar:1. Fruit Juices - They might seem healthy but some fruit juices can contain the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar! 2. Tomato Sauce - Sugar is often added to tomato-based products to counter acidity. Research has shown that up to one third of the contents of a bottle of sauce can be sugar. 3. Peanut Butter - Tastes great but it’s full of added sugar. Read the label and compare brands. 4. Salad Dressings - Low-fat dressings are often guilty of replacing fat with extra sugar and salt to improve the taste. 5. Dried Fruit - Often containing high amounts of sugar, the problem here is compounded by the fact that it’s easier to eat a greater amount of dried fruit than normal fruit.
6. Yoghurt - Flavoured versions, in particular, will contain added sugar as will low and non-fat brands. 7. Breakfast Cereals - Notorious for their sugar content! Again, read the labels and compare brands. 8. Health Bars - Avoid snacking on these! Many contain the equivalent of up to 3 teaspoons of sugar per 30g bar. 9. Canned Vegetables Often contain added sugar to help preserve them for longer. Avoid and buy fresh. 10. Canned Soup - Again, as with canned vegetables, sugar can be used to extend the shelf-life of the product.

My Favourite Dish
By Peter Jacob, Owner L’amour de la Femme
Pink Snapper with Brussel Sprout Leaves and a Caper Sauce I came up with this dish in order to give brussel sprouts the recognition they deserve for being such a sweet and yummy vegetable when cooked right. They give a great lift to the dish not only in taste but in colour as well. For this dish, you will need a piece of snapper, brussel sprout leaves, lemon, butter, white wine, capers, mash potato and micro herbs to serve. To start with in a bowl, sprinkle the snapper with olive oil, salt and pepper to season. Place a non-stick pan over a medium heat and add a dob of butter. Wait until the butter is slightly brown before adding the snapper fillet, placing the skin side down first then turning as the skin becomes coloured and slightly crisp. Once you have seared both sides of the snapper take the fish out of the pan and place it onto a baking tray with silicone paper on the bottom. Keep the pan as it will be needed for the sauce. Using the pan the snapper was seared in, put in another dob of butter, keeping the temperature low so as not to burn the butter.
Add in a slice of lemon, a few capers and a splash of white wine. Next, boil some water in a saucepan with a splash of oil and a pinch of salt. This is to cook those delicious brussel sprout leaves with the oil and salt, helping to keep the leaves shiny and fresh. Drop the leaves in for 1 minute, then strain and put them into the sauce. Now it’s time to serve. Place the piece of snapper into an oven at about 190˚C for a few minutes to warm and finish cooking. Place the mash potato on the plate followed by the fish and then the sauce. Garnish with a wedge of lemon and sprinkle with micro herbs. I hope you enjoy this dish as it is one of our favourites here at the restaurant as the weather warms up. This dish is available at L’amour de la Femme, 18 Wittenoom Street. The restaurant is open for breakfast on Sunday, lunch Wednesday to Sunday and for dinner Wednesday to Saturday.

Love Humanity
By Annie Malone
There’s a lot of information readily available these days about living healthily and wisely and also much discussion on the subject of being responsible caretakers for our planet. Being enlightened and conscientious citizens of our earth, we can all educate ourselves in the fundamentals of how this can be achieved. I often wonder about the next generation and if all those marches aimed at saving forests and changing our mindset about what is important for the longevity of the human race are having an effect. Greenpeace and other such earth groups are very cool groups for young people to now be a part of. It’s a great vehicle to get people interested in volunteering in order to take action on an issue and to create involvement. One of my young staff recently made a trip to Borneo to volunteer on the Orang-utans Project where she stayed in a local village. Yes, she is one of the planet conscious younger generation who gets out and actively learns as much as they can. Our future is in good hands! But what struck me most on her return was the impact that the interaction with the villagers had had on her. How they prepared their food, the food they ate, the school and what the children did for play and how the community lived. The work with the orang-utans was amazing but more amazing to her was the way these people in our eyes had so little but still they had everything they needed. They were rich by their standards but perhaps considered
poor by ours? They had food, community and reasons for living. Listening to her made me realise that what nourishes and interests us as human beings is that emotional connection to others. Yes, living is really about humanity, defined as the collection of human beings and how we interact with each other. The basic daily rituals of preparing food together, sharing meals, interacting with others in our community and helping each other are more important to our wellbeing than we realise. The Dalai Lama wrote some thought provoking lines about our western world, “We can travel across the world but still sometimes don’t know our neighbours. We have all the gadgets to save time, but still we have not enough time.” So my thoughts on this subject are, nourish your body and soul, and take the time to grow some of your own food, if you grow too much then share it with others. Chop and prepare your own meals and enjoy the time it takes. Discover the joy of making your own chutneys, sauces, cakes, salads, breads and whatever else. Invite friends and family around to savour your successes and failures. Engage in the ancient art of conversation and face to face communication. Embrace the joys of humanity and what it is to be human. Live, love, enjoy and be happy. Annie Malone is the proprietor of The Natural Temptation Café, 47 Stephen Street, Bunbury.

Moojelup Farm
A boutique, family-run winery located on Thompson Road in Cookernup, near Harvey, Moojelup Farm takes its name from the Nyoongar word for the Western Australian Christmas tree, Mooja. Positioned in the northern part of the Geographe wine region, over the years the farm has produced fine beef cattle and sheep as well as being a major dairy. Owners Simon and Stephanie Holthouse developed the winery in the late 1990’s, producing its first vintage in 2000. Specialising in premium Shiraz, Semillon and Cabernet varieties, the winery has a ‘single vineyard’ approach to its wine style and production. Small selections of hand-picked fruit are processed by traditional methods using open fermentation, basket hand pressing and barrel aging. A sparkling Shiraz is also available made in the ‘methode traditionnelle’. Bottle fermented and aged for more than a year on its lees, it has all the hand-made style and class of a good sparkling wine, making it ideal for celebrations or simply to accompany a fine cut of succulent steak.
Wines can be purchased through cellar door (by appointment) or on-line. Recent Awards Moojelup Farm has received another gold medal at this year’s prestigious Qantas Wine Show for its Thompsons Block 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. It also went on to receive a trophy for the Best Older Red Wine as well as being a finalist in the Best Cabernet category and finalist in the Best Red Wine of the show. This is the third gold the winery has been awarded over the past two years. For further information on the winery, go online at www.moojelup.com.au 72

For those wanting something different in a Sauvignon Blanc this wine is a must try. Barrel fermented in four-year old French Oak and with careful lees work, it shows a real complexity of style and is a subtle, elegant alternative to a traditional fruit forward-style Sauvignon Blanc. Showing subtle hints of spicy oak and notes of melon and white peach, the palate is rounded out with flavours of creamy lime tart and a long finish. A perfect wine for the hot summer ahead. Awards Winner of the Best Sauvignon Blanc, Boutique Wine Awards 2013. These awards are open to both Australian and New Zealand producers. Bronze medal, Royal Sydney Wine Show 2012, Geographe Wine Show 2012. Composition: 100% Sauvignon Blanc Vineyard: Talisman, Wellington Mill Oak Treatment: Barrel fermented in old use French Oak. food & wine Donnybrook winery Oakway Estate has recently secured a top 4 position in the Australian Wine & Viticulture Journal’s Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc blend challenge. Announced in the September-October edition of the magazine, owner Wayne Oakway Estate SSB Hammond commented, “We had known about the ranking for a while but were asked to refrain from releasing the news until now. Keeping it to ourselves was a hard task but it is recognition that we are producing great wines and more importantly we, and other local wineries, are lifting the profile for the Geographe Wine Region as a whole.” As well as winning Best White Wine at the Geographe Wine Show with its 2012 Gabrielle Chardonnay, Talisman Wines has also recently received a gold medal at the Blackwood Valley Show, gold at the WA Boutique Wine Show and a silver medal at the Qantas Wine Show of WA for the same wine. The winery also won a gold medal at the Qantas Wine Show of WA 2013 for its 2013 Riesling. Smallwater Estate has had a hugely successful time of it recently with an impressive 8 gold, 10 silver and 27 bronze medals for the year to date. The winery also received Best Shiraz at the Geographe Wine Show as well as the Most Successful Small Producer award. To top it off it also won a national award, Champion Small Winery of the Show, at the Small Winemakers Show 2013 held in Stanthorpe, Queensland, after receiving 3 gold and 3 bronze medals. Two of these award-wining wines are yet to be released but will be available from the cellar door in the near future.
The Geographe Wine Region Welcome to our regular update on the news and happenings around the Geographe Wine Region. With results coming in thick and fast from wine shows around the country, the Geographe region’s very own wine show was also held recently at the Lord Forrest Hotel, Bunbury. More about that later. In the meantime, here’s a quick round up of some recent wins and new releases around the region. Bonking Frog Wines has released no less than 3 new wines this November. The new releases include a 2011 Winter Merlot, a medium bodied red with flavours of chocolate cherry and spice, a fresh, bright and juicy 2013 Foreigner SSB and a 2013 Scandal Merlot a fruity, vivacious red, best served chilled.

2013 Geographe Wine Show
Jake Atkinson reports…
hosted by the chair judge, with information, highlights and a discussion on areas that need attention finished by an overall summary of the wines submitted. In my view, the show provided an excellent regional spectrum of wines, ranging from the conventional to alternative wine varietals with producer quality being at an all-time high. This year saw Ferguson Valley producer Green Door celebrate Wine of the Show and Best Red for its 2012 El Toro Tempranillo, which came from a pool of very strong wines. Talisman Wines scored Best White Wine for its 2012 Gabrielle Chardonnay. If the show was anything to go by, I think the future for the region is looking bright with a number of very well made alternative wine varieties on show coupled, of course, with the area’s fantastic tourism potential. The producers of the region are incredibly passionate about their region and their enthusiasm and skill is producing a winning combination. Geographe Rocks! Jake Atkinson is Sommelier at Mojo’s Restaurant, Victoria Street, Bunbury.
Lab coats, wine glass laden tables, clipboards and a sense of nervous anticipation filled the room as the 2013 Geographe Wine Show commenced. I was fortunate enough to be included on the judging panel as an associate judge amongst a team of talented wine professionals. It was a two day, swirling, sniffing, slurping, spitting and debate-filled vinous extravaganza. To give an overview of the process, all wines are judged anonymously, only referenced with vintage and grape varietal. Prior to the show, wines are categorised and appropriately classed in relevance to one another so that flights of wine matched with reference numbers can be laid out for evaluation by the judges. The judging process is based on the 20 point scoring scale with scores averaged between all eligible judges. The scoring scale works as follows: 18.5 to 20 Ashley and Kath Keeffe of Green Door Wines points as a gold medal, 17.0 to 18.4 as a silver medal and 15.5 to 16.9 for a bronze medal. Anything below the medalling score is excluded from the awards and feedback on faults or uncharacteristic varietal traits are listed. Once this has concluded, there is a forum for the wine producers 75
