The latest fashion trends from The Bunbury Life’s resident fashion expert...

Summer Fashion

Either in shorts or mid-length, culottes are the ideal way to wear pants for the months ahead. Add strappy heels and a beautiful, elegant look is created. The mid-length is also the way to wear a skirt this summer in a streamlined pencil, A-line or fluted style. The waist is accentuated and the hem should lie just below the knee, creating a sophisticated and very feminine look. To complete an outfit with either a mid-length skirt or culottes, add a cropped boxy top or tuck in a crisp white shirt. Talulah at Essence Monochrome textural mesh is set to feature prominently on mid-length culottes and skirts as well as on tops too. It breaks up the block of black or white and brings a lighter, fresher look for summer. The dress to invest in this summer is a shift dress. It’s an incredibly easy item to wear and looks great in this season’s vibrant botanical print as well as in a delicious sorbet colour. For a more body-con option for dresses, the sheath is also going to be very popular. For a relaxed nonchalant summer look, look out for tops and sheath dresses that expose shoulders. Slouchy necklines, off the shoulder or cut outs give a peek of flesh without showing too much. It’s a nod back to the 1960’s and looks fabulous and chic with a Bridget Bardotesque ponytail with height at the crown.

It’s bold, it’s bright, it’s botanical!

Summer in WA is all about glorious sunshine, warm breezes and blue skies; the perfect backdrop for showing off the latest trends hitting our stores. It’s going to be a bold and bright season with a great choice of feminine, elegant and relaxed silhouettes. Channelling a retro resort look, botanical is going to be the standout print for summer. Look out for large scale photographic inspired prints of ferns, leaves, tropical palm trees, pineapples, exotic flowers and birds in beautifully rich green, red, orange or classic monochrome. This print is very feminine and lets us girls easily slip into a summer holiday mood. The best way to wear a botanical print is to keep the cut simple and to pair it with subtle jewellery and nude shoes or sandals. Matching separates works well but you can break up the look by picking an individual piece, such as a midi skirt, shift dress, boxy top, wide leg pant or cute shorts, and wearing it with something neutral or bright white. Key pieces to have in the wardrobe this summer include firstly culottes. 8

The Art of Looking Expensive

Dearest ones, Greta from ShoeBeDoo here to share the holy grail of beauty - looking expensive effortlessly. And without the thousand dollar price tag. Here’s how to harness accessory buying power …

That Woman ...

Treat yourself and your besties to the most fabulous shoes and bags ...

You all know her. The one you pass by in the street and go, “Wow look at how she put THAT together”. It’s not just about her chic wardrobe or the amount of money she spent. Often, it’s what she put with the basics. That handbag, that pair of heels, that clutch.

That Handbag ...

…which isn’t black! We all tend to go safe and say, “I need a good black handbag, it goes with everything”. But does it really and is it really how you want to look? Black, black, black, blah blah blah. Instead, pick your favourite colour in the rainbow and find that colour somewhere, somehow, in a bag. Elegant, well priced, well designed bags from Etiquette always have a neutral base colour, or black accented trim (there’s your black, ladies). And then they have the zing: a fuchsia floral embroidered pocket on the front, violet and teal satin stripes in the gusset, bright pink satin lining inside. Oh yes, “she’s” got one of those slung over her shoulder!

That Pair of Heels ...

…be they achingly gorgeous Valentino-inspired small pointed kitten heels from German designer Peter Kaiser for the comfort lovers, or Jimmy Choo-influenced caged heels from Brazilio. It’s not all about that bass …it’s all about those shoes. Tan ballet pumps from Django & Juliette with ankle skimming, tailored black pants is ever so Audrey or wear your LBD with a pair of high heel floral musk and melon points from Sachi. Effortless … can’t you just see “her” confidently striding on the sidewalk?

That Clutch

…in black satin is out and that clutch in snake embossed cobalt is in. Olga Berg is the veritable queen of colour and texture with art printed in textile on pods and floral landscapes picking up every colour possible on envelope clutches. Does “she” rock her denims and slouchy tee with coloured shoes and a perfectly printed clutch? Mais oui, she does … Inspired yet? So hope so. Because colour, texture and interest all contribute ever so positively to the art of looking expensive. That, and the lack of only head to toe black or beige. Want more of an accessory-fix? Follow me on Facebook (ShoeBeDoo. Bunbury.Dunsborough) and Instagram (shoebedooshoes). After all, as the late Oscar de la Renta said, “A woman makes an outfit her own with accessories.”

colour of candle, such as ivory or black. For a more unusual centrepiece, find an ornate birdcage that can house a chunky pillar candle. Jam jars are a more low-key way to decorate a table but are still very effective. Regularly space out the jars along the table and place inside either a single tea light or some short-stemmed flowers. To make it more personal, wrap twine or coloured ribbon around each jar. Make use of our coastal location – you never know what you might find down at the beach! Cleaned-up driftwood and shells make striking arrangements. Add candles for more effect and try to place them along the driftwood if it is level enough. For a colourful table decoration, use several Indian-coloured tea glasses each with its own little birthday cake candle inside. It’s a cost-effective way to add vibrancy and sparkle to the evening. Edible centrepieces are a lot of fun and great for an evening of casual drinks and tapas. Place frozen or fresh fruit, such as mangoes, raspberries or strawberries, into ice cube trays and top up with water. Once frozen, tip out

The Finishing Touches

In the previous issue of The Bunbury Life, we discussed ways of preparing our outside living space for the summer. In this edition, we focus on some important finishing touches to our alfresco dining area. Whether you’re planning on having friends over for dinner or just want to quietly relax with a light supper, there are plenty of ideas to help create the perfect table decoration, and they don’t need to break the bank. To start with, always ensure that decorations are low enough to allow everyone to see each other across the table and try to stick to simple, clean ideas to avoid cluttering up the table. For an elegant centrepiece, think about using a beautiful cake stand in white porcelain or clear glass in order to display a cluster of tea lights or candles of varying heights. Various antique candlesticks, either grouped together for a circular table or lined along the centre of a rectangular table, also work well. Stick to one

into a large glass bowl and bring them out to your alfresco table. Guests can pop a fruity ice cube into their drink or, as the ice starts to melt through the evening, use a cocktail stick and enjoy the cool fruit by itself. Finally, how about creating an aromatic table decoration? Placing lavender bound in twine or ribbon in glass jars of the same size not only

smells wonderful but has a measured and ordered look. You can go more rustic by using mismatched jars and vases. Instead of lavender, try mini pots of herbs or cut them and place in little jars. Enhance their aromas through the evening by gently rubbing a leaf or two between your fingers and thumb.

Homeward Bound Imports

Readers of The Bunbury Life will probably be familiar with the name Homeward Bound Imports. That’s because up until 12 months ago, this unique furniture and homewares store operated out of a site in Bunbury at the corner of Victoria and Carey Streets. Having run the business in Bunbury for 5 years, last September, owners Chris and Jayne Bowen-Sant decided to return to their roots in Busselton where the pair opened their first store back in 1976. Having gone full circle, they have returned to the town that witnessed the start of a journey that has included owning no fewer than 14 stores in various locations over the past 3 decades. Now operating in the Busselton light industrial area, as with the previous Bunbury store, the latest shop continues to specialise in importing a unique range of furniture, homewares and accessories predominantly sourced from Indonesia, India and Afghanistan. The latest shipment to have arrived features an eclectic mix of furniture styles, including vintage, shabby-chic, recycled boat timber and whitewash teak with much of

the furniture in the signature style of the store. In addition to the furniture is an extensive range of decorative items, such as mirrors, lamps, light shades, rugs, glassware, garden ornaments, bird cages and more. Homewares awash with colour provide the perfect opportunity to brighten up any home and the wide choice of cushions, throws, bedcovers, placemats and floormats are worth the visit alone. The store also now stocks its own range of colourful resort wear clothing, including Island Time, Geisha Girl, Nimuki and Eb&Ive with prices starting from just $58. Perfect for easy summer wear and the south west climate. Open 7 days, visit Homeward Bound Imports at 33 Frederick Street, LIA, Busselton. 28

education & training

The Reading Race By Louise Clark

Welcome to my new, regular column for The Bunbury Life. For me, going to primary school was all about having fun and playing with my friends. I don’t remember any pressure to read better than my peers and wasn’t bothered by who was reading which level of books. It’s a different story today. As a former primary and secondary school teacher, and now that I have my own young children, I have seen that from very early on in their school life, children can feel quite inadequate with their reading ability if they are not progressing at the same speed at their peers. This feeling of underachieving is, of course, completely unfounded. We all know that, unless there really is a problem that demands help and support, all children will learn to read in their own time eventually. Unfortunately, though, due to these pressures, some children start to ‘place’ themselves in the class and label themselves as slow if they don’t ‘get’ reading as quickly as others. This can cause frustration and issues with confidence in areas of their personal and school life as well as lowering their own general expectations. So why is this happening? My belief is that it is partly because our education system is more transparent. This is, obviously, a good thing as we want to know exactly what is being taught to our children, when it is being taught, and

how it is being delivered and assessed. Our children also know what they are expected to achieve and this is vital to help them to take more ownership of, and have more independence in, their learning. However, now that we are all armed with this information, it is not only us who expect our children to go through school proficiently, achieving all the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding, and thereby ticking off all the boxes in the correct order. Our children expect this too. We need to take the pressure off ourselves and our children and let them know that learning to read is not a race. Let’s focus instead on the enjoyment of reading to and with our children. Whoever learns to read first is not necessarily the cleverest or most able child. While one child may have succeeded in reading their first chapter book, another may have used spectacular spatial awareness in their construction work, managed to count back in 5’s from 100 or displayed amazing social skills by making up new games to play at recess. Let’s remind ourselves and remind our children that we are all different, and we all find our own successes in our own way, in the end. Louise Clark has studied and taught across all age groups in the British and Australian schooling and college systems. 29

School Focus

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School

At Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, Kindergarten through to Year 12 students enjoy opportunities found nowhere else in regional Western Australia. Set on 33 hectares of beautiful bushland campus, students have access to magnificent facilities to aid them on their learning journey, with Primary and Secondary students utilising the multipurpose hall, gymnasium, library, chapel, sports pavilion and purpose-built technology buildings on a regular basis. As an Anglican school, pastoral care is at the forefront of all activities. The campus is a friendly and tranquil place where boys and girls enjoy mixing in an atmosphere of support from their teachers and respect from their peers. Across the school, students have many opportunities to bond with their Year groups through the Camps programme from Years 1 to10, and with students from varying ages through the House and Secondary Home Group systems. In Early Childhood, the school’s learning philosophy recognises each child as an individual, able to contribute to their own learning journey. Inside the light-filled classrooms, specialist teachers help develop children’s natural curiosity and encourage learning through inquiry skills. Inquiry continues to be a focus throughout the Primary School as students engage in dynamic learning opportunities. Outside, nature playgrounds provide students with a sense of fun and adventure, exploring and learning

within the great outdoors. In the Secondary School, a purpose built Year 7 Centre provides a gradual and guided transition from Primary to Secondary School. Students enjoy an independent space to study and socialise while being gradually introduced to a secondary education at their own pace. Staffed by specialist teachers, students are supported in forging strong bonds of friendship that often last a lifetime. At the senior level, the school offers a range of course options that go beyond WACE subjects to include Certificate I and II courses. Whether going on to further study or entering the workplace, students are supported and mentored to find their likely career path. Bunbury Cathedral School has a proud tradition of academic excellence, consistently achieving 100% graduation rates, while a high proportion of graduates go on to university or further study. Many of the university-bound students are additionally rewarded with their first preference of course option. Whether joining the school at primary level or secondary, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School offers a vast array of co-curricular and after-school activities so that all students can pursue their individual talents and reach their potential. For further information on enrolling your child at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, call 9722 6004. 30

A world-class education... it’s waiting for you! At Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School our Kindergarten to Year 12 students receive a world-class education right here in the South West. Offering an outstanding academic programme, taught by highly dedicated teachers and enriched with strong pastoral care, every student is nurtured and encouraged to flourish as an individual. Beginning with an inquiry-based learning philosophy in Early Learning, in the Primary years we focus on laying strong foundations in literacy and numeracy. Our Year 7 Centre provides a supportive and seamless transition to Secondary School, where students are provided with many opportunities to bond with their peers. At the Secondary level our School consistently achieves 100% graduation rates and senior students are mentored in choosing their future career or study paths. Combined with the myriad of co-curricular, leadership, sporting, and performance activities on offer, our students enjoy every opportunity to achieve their fullest potential. BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Transport the family in style!

As BMW’s first ever front-wheel drive vehicle, the 2 Series Active Tourer represents a significant shift in focus for the Bavarian luxury car brand. However, with the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) market big business these days, there’s been a certain inevitability about BMW’s foray into the premium compact class for some time. As the new kid on the block, the 2 Series Active Tourer has certainly set the bar high. Offering plenty of comfort and luxurious touches inside the cabin, the new model retains a stylish, sporty edge with its wellproportioned, sleek lines on the outside. Combining its long wheelbase with a raised roofline, passengers can enjoy an unprecedented feel of spaciousness together with the commanding views that a higher seating position offers. Versatile luggage compartments, a sliding rear seat and its split-folding rear backrest further enhance the vehicle’s practicality. Safety levels also impress with BMW ConnectedDrive providing a range of assistance systems to include, amongst others, Traffic Jam Assistant, a feature aimed at making freeway driving less stressful. In addition to the sophisticated, all-new front-wheel drive system, the 2 Series Active Tourer also introduces a new generation of

powerful, light and fuel-efficient engines in both three and four-cylinder options. Delivering exceptional efficiency, the brand new three-cylinder petrol engine, fitted to the entry level 218i Active Tourer, generates 100kW and 136hp whilst still achieving a combined consumption of 4.9L per 100kms. The 218d Active Tourer, however, does even better with its four-cylinder diesel engine achieving a combined cycle consumption of 4.1L per 100kms. All this while still producing 330Nm of power, a top speed of 208 km/h and a dash from standstill to 100 km/h in just 8.9 seconds! Top of the bill in this class is the 225i Active Tourer. Fitted with a standard eightspeed Steptronic gearbox and four-cylinder petrol powerplant, it powers from 0-100 km/h in around 6 and a half seconds, achieves a top speed of 240 km/h and consumes a miserly 5.8L per 100 km/h on a combined cycle. As the first of potentially a number of frontwheel drive cars from BMW, the 2 Series Active Tourer offers a compelling choice for the new breed of upwardly mobile families. Keep an eye out for further additions to the line-up. BMW X6

Exciting second generation SAV revealed! It’s not often a car can lay claim to creating a completely new genre. But back in 2009, that’s exactly what the BMW X6 achieved. With its unique blend of the robustness and versatility of an SUV and the sporting elegance of a coupé, the Sports Activity Coupé (SAV) was born and not unsurprisingly other luxury car manufacturers were quick to follow in its wake. Five years on and with global sales of over 250,000, BMW has further strengthened its grip on the lucrative SAV market with the launch of the second generation X6. Delivering improved handling and ride comfort, enhanced performance, lower fuel consumption and featuring permanently active all-wheel drive, the new X6 also comes with an impressive array of extra equipment over and above the previous model. This includes bi-xenon headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission with steering wheel shift paddles, leather trim, two-zone climate control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and the Driving Assistant safety package from BMW ConnectedDrive. A new line-up of engines features the latest-generation V8 developing 330kW and 450hp for the X6 xDrive50i, a 190kW, 258hp six-cylinder diesel engine for the X6 xDrive30d

and another straight-six diesel with three turbochargers developing 280kW and 381hp in the X6 M50d. Using the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, extensive BMW EfficientDyanamics technology and enhanced aerodynamics and weight saving techniques, fuel consumption has been cut on average by an extraordinary 22 per cent. Underpinned by a newly developed aluminium intensive chassis and featuring an improved adaptive suspension package, the new X6 delivers added agility and improved response. With three packages to choose from, Comfort, Dynamic and Professional, all featuring adaptive damping control, the new model also comes with the new electromechanical steering system as standard. Longer and slightly higher than the first generation X6 (34mm and 12mm respectively), and with a more sculpted and aggressive look than its predecessor, there is still no mistaking its undeniable appeal and luxurious feel. Its continued popularity seems already assured. For further information and pricing on the new BMW X6, contact Auto Classic in Victoria Park on 9311 7533, or Westcoast BMW in Wangara, on 9303 5888.

Mercedes Benz C250

Powerful, agile sedan sets new standards

Following on from our first look at the all new Mercedes Benz C-Class in the previous issue of The Bunbury Life, in this edition we take a look at the stunning, turbo-charged 2.0L petrol

C250 sedan. Sitting right in the middle of the C-Class range, Mercedes-Benz have high hopes for the C250.

40

on the road With over 45,000 units of the outgoing C-Class sold down under, the C250 sedan is expected to account for almost half of all new C-Class sales in Australia. Expectations are high and if first impressions are anything to go by certainly not unfounded. With its eye-catching S-Class influenced styling, elegant profile and distinctive LED headlights, the new C-Class has already earned plenty of plaudits for its strong visual appeal. However, on the C250 sedan it’s both the interior fit out and extra inclusions as standard that really up the ante. With a Nappa leather-trimmed steering wheel, active parking assist, front and rear parking sensors and 18-inch alloy wheels already standard on the basic C-Class, the C250 adds leather upholstery, 19-inch alloys, privacy glass and keyless entry to the package. Safety-wise where the basic model included blind-spot assist, collision prevention assist and an electronic stability program with acceleration skid control, the C250 includes nine airbags, steering assist, radar cruise control, rear cross-traffic assist, active blind-spot assist and active lane-keeping assist. Fitted with the same 2.0L direct-injection turbo-charged fourcylinder engine with seven-speed auto transmission gearbox as the C200, the C250 also delivers noticeably more power. Producing 155kW of power and 350Nm of torque, compared to 135kW and 300Nm in the C200, the C250 flies from 0-100km/h in just 6.6 seconds. All this while still achieving the same 6.0L per 100km fuel efficiency as its entry level sibling. Priced at under $70,000 plus on road costs, the C250 petrol variant offers class-leading refinement and luxury at an affordable price. For further information on the all-new Mercedes Benz C-Class, contact Mercedes-Benz Bunbury on 9721 8199.

Triumph Scrambler 900

A bygone age revisited!

Back in the carefree days of the 1960’s, stripped down desert bikes based on Triumph twins were all the rage. Fitted with high-level exhausts, dirt bike tyres and modified suspension systems designed for hard recreational pursuits, these bikes epitomised the freedom and spirit of the times. Highly competitive, they were even famously ridden by Hollywood superstar Steve McQueen. It doesn’t get much cooler than that! Taking its inspiration from these bikes, the Triumph Scrambler 900 also takes it cue from the classically-styled, retro-themed Triumph Bonneville with its traditional tubular steel, twin-cradle frame. Featuring cut down mudguards, a black engine finish and twin chromed stainless steel exhaust pipes, the Scrambler’s rebellious looks and throaty roar offer a convincing throwback to those classic 1960’s twins. Fitted with an 865cc eight-valve engine designed to offer more torque at low revs, the five-speed Scrambler peaks at an impressive 68Nm at 4750rpm. However, with 90 per cent of its torque available from just 2500rpm and with plenty of power on tap, there’s enough thrust and acceleration here to have some real off-road fun. Air-cooled just like the 1960’s

originals, the modern day Scrambler engine is also bristling with the very latest technology, ensuring the sort of ride you would expect from a modern day Triumph. Durable and reliable, the bike features the very latest Triumph fuel injection system along with double overhead cams, making this not only an engaging engine but also highly fuel efficient. Light and agile yet reassuringly stable when the terrain gets tough, the upright riding position and high ground clearance makes for commanding views whether off-roading or cruising around town. Handling is also responsive and easy to control whether hustling through corners or slipping through traffic. There’s also room for a friend with its traditional long, flat seat, fitted as standard. First introduced into the Triumph range in 2006, the Triumph Scrambler 900 continues to offer an intoxicating mix of retro looks and modern performance. It’s a bike to stimulate the senses. Lenders Mortgage Insurance Is it worth paying it?

By Theo Krinos

Although most home buyers are reluctant to pay Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI), to achieve their property goals, paying the fee, in some cases, can be a prudent strategy. In short, it’s not always the case that the payment of LMI should be avoided. So what is LMI? An insurance policy paid for by the property buyer, LMI insures the lender against the buyer defaulting on a home loan. Generally, it is required to be paid if the buyer wishes to borrow more than 80% of the value of the property and whilst it protects the lender if mortgage payments are not met it also allows buyers the opportunity to purchase a home with a deposit of less than 20%. The amount of this one-off fee depends on the amount borrowed and the size of the deposit and it can either be paid up front or added to the loan. Of course, in today’s housing market, many buyers, particularly first home buyers, find the task of raising a 20% deposit an extremely difficult proposition. Saving for a deposit can mean many years of renting and, in turn, the chance missed of capitalising on favourable buying conditions. In many cases such as this, it may well be a prudent tactic to purchase a property with a smaller deposit, pay the LMI and instead of paying rent for potentially another 3 to 5 years, alternatively be paying down the mortgage over that period. Even with the cost of LMI factored in, the amount of equity

developed in the home over that period can often mean the buyer is financially better off in the long run, a financial position that can be leveraged off in the coming years to further build wealth. Obviously, each case has to be judged on its own merits and a conversation with an experienced mortgage broker will quickly determine the best way forward in each individual situation. However, the key for buyers is to ensure that if LMI is taken out, that they are buying well and are prepared to stay in the property for the long-term to benefit from the capital growth. Are You in the Cloud? By Phil Di Candilo

Cloud accounting is all the buzz right now. If you are not in the cloud, then you should at least be aware that it exists. If not, here is a brief summary. Quite simply, cloud accounting enables users to login to their bookkeeping or accounting software via the internet to very much like internet banking. Whilst logged in, it’s possible to perform all normal bookkeeping tasks before logging out when finished. The main benefits of this system are no daily back-ups, in most cases limited or no software upgrades, access from multiple devices (desktop, laptop or mobile) and multiple user access for owners, book keepers and accountants. The downside is only limited to the quality and speed of the internet connection. And yes, it is safe and secure! For those happy to do internet banking, bookkeeping in the cloud is no different. Most bookkeeping programmes have already moved to a cloud version and those that haven’t will not be far behind. As an accountant, I see some real and tangible benefits for businesses going forward. For example, one important advantage of cloud bookkeeping is the data downloads. Once set up, it’s possible to feed transactions from business accounts and credit cards straight into the bookkeeping programme. These transactions can then be classified to their relevant income and expense category. It’s that simple! The programmes are even clever enough to recognise recurring transactions and will classify these as well. This then gives live daily data and for those that keep on top of this new tool there will be a considerable reduction in the time spent ‘doing the books’. Instead, subscribers can spend time reviewing

and analysing their business, quickly identifying and tracking trends. No more dealing with historical data, in turn, leading to a more proactive way of conducting business! For those already using a PC-based bookkeeping package, there is a fair chance that existing data can be converted to a cloud based option. After that, set up the bank feeds and you are in the cloud. Monthly subscriptions will have to paid and currently these sit at around $50 per month. However, I can certainly guarantee that the time saved, not to mention the benefit of dealing with real time data, will be well worth the investment. Where is this heading? What will happen with business activity statements and income tax returns in the future? As the programmes get smarter, business reporting will change. It will be quite different in as little as two years from now! If you are not in the cloud, you should be. Our people at RSM are ready to help businesses make that transition now. If, on the other hand, you are already in the cloud, we can also help you make the most of this new business tool. Phil Di Candilo is Director of RSM Bird Cameron Bunbury, part of a full service, national accounting group, delivering expert corporate financial and advisory accounting services to clients across diverse industry sectors. Winner of the 2014 South West HIA Innovation in Housing Project of the Year, this magnificent home was designed by Dane Richardson from Dane Design Australia and built by Tallwood Constructions. Featuring a huge cantilevered balcony and concrete roof, cedar bi-fold shutters, lift, glass walled cellar room and high quality cabinetry and tiling together with an exceptional level of detail and finish, this home is cutting edge innovation. So clever is the design that it leaves the casual observer wondering exactly how the cantilevered balcony and roof have been achieved. Located on the shores of Geographe Bay in Dunsborough, the home is complemented by a concrete plunge pool, boat storage and fish cleaning station. Externally, the bold elements are sharp with textured coated render and rough-sawn cedar battens. Highlights internally include the floating timber stairs wrapped around the central lift which leads to the cellar room. Your attention is then immediately drawn to the feature fireplace in the living area that leads the eye to the meals area and the turquoise waters of Geographe Bay beyond. Upstairs, the first floor balcony has rough-sawn, cedar bi-fold shutters, allowing for a superb outside-inside living room. Anyone who knows anything about Raminani Iyengar will realise how privileged I was to be able to do this. Being in Southern India, the Hindu diet is mainly vegetarian so it seemed a natural transition. The local food was amazing.

People are generally more aware of good food now. Also, the availability of a broader range of products has sparked an interest in healthier cooking. With more organically grown food available and less chemicals used in farm production, there is an enlightened, willing public to sell to.

Where do you see the future of food heading?

How did your love of vegetarian food become a business?

I know there will continue to be a push for natural growing methods and fresh local produce. Customers will pay more for unsprayed fresh fruit and vegetables, grass fed beef and free range chicken, are more conscious of the environment and are happy to source local food produce. This appreciation will continue to grow as interest in healthy ingredients continues.

I teamed up with fellow alternative lifestyler Katrina Bogdanoff at the Good Earth Surf Shop around 1985 and we ran the Naturally Good Café. In 1989, we moved to Centrepoint to open The Natural Temptation Café. A year later, I bought out Katrina’s share and 25 years on I am still here!

How has the Natural Temptation Café evolved over the years?

How do you relax when away from the business?

Katrina and I started Natural Temptation with only 64sq metres. Every few years as nearby shops became available, we increased the size to accommodate our customers. Moving to Centrepoint made the café available to a broader customer base and in the 1990’s, with cholesterol and food allergies becoming important topics, there was a growing interest in wholesome, freshly-made vegetarian food.

My form of relaxation is exercise. I love to do bike challenges on the Gibb River Road in the North West and I love to run although I don’t compete anymore. Half marathons were a favourite. Maybe I will train for one more next year to keep the muscles ticking over! I also love a good book and collect ukuleles so I practise when I have time. Making quirky things with recycled paper and gardening are also favourite pastimes. I love to grow organically and find growing and picking while my husband cooks at home very relaxing.

Are there any dishes that have stood the test of time and are still on the menu? Our Vegetable Lasagne is a long-time favourite

Jeanette Elliott

A dermal clinician originally from Perth, Jeanette has recently set up her own local practice at the Greater Bunbury Medical Centre. How long have you been practising as a dermal clinician and what brought you to Bunbury? I began studying cosmetic dermal science in 2008 and have practised in the area of aesthetics and advanced skin therapies for more than 10 years. Realising that my passion was in corrective skin treatments and evidence based practice, this led me to pursue further studies and gain formal qualifications in the field of dermal therapies at the Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science (AACDS). We moved to Bunbury in 2010, seeking a ‘tree change’ from city life and haven’t looked back since! Which skin conditions do you primarily treat? I specialise in the management of both healthy and damaged skin conditions to promote optimal function. Using a holistic approach, I prescribe topical therapies as well as therapeutic interventions and clinical treatments. This also involves conducting a thorough consultation taking into account medical conditions, diet and lifestyle factors as well as a detailed skin assessment. Typical skin conditions treated include acne, normal and premature ageing, sun damage, pigment disorders, scar management and excessive hair growth. How many treatments are typically required to achieve permanent hair reduction? The number of treatments generally required very much depends on the area being treated, the skill of the practitioner and other factors, such as age, skin type and hair colour. Ultimately, it is patient safety and the long term efficiency of the treatment that is most important.

Are there any particular conditions that are more prevalent in the south west of WA? In short, the south west is no different to anywhere else in Australia. Our outdoor lifestyle with its abundance of sun together with other environmental factors can be extremely harsh on our skin. Damage affects skin at the most basic level – in the skin cells. This is where the skin revision journey must begin to help improve skin conditions and fight premature ageing. Describe how technology and treatments have improved in this field Techniques and equipment have improved dramatically but unfortunately not all practitioners are fully qualified to undertake treatments in a safe and effective manner. Dermal therapy emerged over a decade ago out of the skin therapy industry through the increasing popularity of non-surgical cosmetic treatments. Its rapid growth increased the demand for formally trained dermal clinicians and led to the development of formal higher education in the area of dermal science. A dermal therapist is quite different to a beauty therapist or paramedical aesthetician as they specialise specifically in the field of dermal therapy. In an effort to maintain standards, integrity and education, I have become actively involved in the dermal therapy professional community via my role as a tutor, trainer and student assessor within the AACDS. How do you manage to relax away from your clinic? My husband and I live on one and half acres of land in Donnybrook. We have a beautiful home and vast gardens that I thoroughly enjoy and it is this peaceful and loving environment where I can truly relax and wind down. 60

The Silly Season

Staying sane and on track!

By Raquel Powley

It’s that time of the year when we love to get together and PARTY! Work parties, family parties, friends’ parties, party parties! Well, most of us do this anyway…. So how do you stay on track and keep up your healthy diet and exercise routine? Here are a few tips that I live by and you can choose to follow all or just one or two. Remember, being healthy also includes your mind so don’t beat yourself up if you stray off track. Just get back on as soon as you can. Do what you can, it’s not a competition. DRINK plenty of water. It’s getting hotter and staying hydrated is essential to health. To spice it up a bit you could add some goji berries or lemon juice for a nice cleanse. Also try alternating plain with sparkling water. SERVE your water out of a wine glass. ALTERNATE alcohol with soda or mineral water. If you want to keep up with your colleagues you could always shoot the water and sip the champagne. You may miss some of the shenanigans on your frequent toilet visits but at least you will remember the ones you were there for. CHOOSE the lesser evil. If there are trays of deep fried finger food, sour cream and wedges and trays of fresh fruit, which one is going to serve your health better?

EAT before you go out. Drinking on an empty stomach has a prompt effect as the alcohol is absorbed through your stomach lining and straight into your blood stream. This will not serve you well if you are out for more than one drink. Remember the office party rules….. REST! We have annual leave and holidays to have a break from the everyday groundhog. So this is the time that you can do the things you don’t normally have time for. Make sure that you grab a book, watch a movie, have a bath, learn meditation, paint - do something that is the ultimate relaxing, lazy indulgence for you. HAVE fun! Smile, laugh, have a joke. Laughter has been proven to have amazing restorative effects to the brain and body. Best of health!

Dogs Around Children Tell-tale signs to be aware of By Braden Collins

Despite plenty of advice given to both dog owners and parents about the correct interaction between dogs and children, we are still unfortunately seeing too many dogs being put down as the result of biting a child. In my view, this boils down to a lack of education amongst parents and dog owners with many parents also unaware of what to look out for when watching their own dog. Signs that a dog is worried and may be about to bite can often be easily missed. So what should we look out for? Look for stress signals. These can include yawning, the licking of lips and the showing of the whites of the eyes. This is the dog saying, “I’m not completely comfortable and I’ll show my stress in a subtle, non-aggressive way.” Be aware of changes in body language. If the dog becomes tense, appears stiff or stops panting when a child is near, this is a sign of stress. This is a good early warning sign that the dog is not comfortable with the situation. Watch for avoidance behaviour. If a dog is walking away from a child it means it doesn’t want to play. This is very important to watch for as this is how many children get bitten. Often a dog will back away and the child will keep following. Eventually, the dog will get to a place such as its kennel where 64

animal health it can’t back away any further. If the child keeps following, the dog may feel like it has no choice but to bite the child to force it away from it. Ensure the child is behaving well. If the child is pulling its ears, jumping on the dog or hurting it, it’s hardly surprising if the dog bites. Teach your kids to be gentle with dogs and how to safely approach a dog. Be aware that growling is a warning. If the dog is growling, it is trying hard to get the message across that it is really unhappy with the situation. It basically means, “Stop doing what you are doing or I will bite you.” Take a growl very seriously and try to work out why the dog is growling and if it is appropriate for the dog

to be growling. For example, if a kid is pulling the dog’s ears and the dog growls, then growling is appropriate as the dog is trying to stop the kid without resorting to a bite. If the dog is growling when people walk past, then it is not appropriate and professional advice should be sought. Most dog bites are preventable with proper training and education. Make sure your dog is well socialised through meeting plenty of other animals and people (especially when young as this is when they learn most of their social skills), is well trained and that advice is sought early if there are concerns about behaviour. Restaurant Review

Janny’s Café

Located within the Stirlings Centre on Stephen Street, Janny’s Café has been serving up a range of wholesome breakfast and lunch choices for close on 15 years. Having operated as a café under various guises on the same site for around 25 years, it was previous owner Janny Peace that gave it its current name. Now owned and operated by Stacey Bubb and partner Darren Rogers, the pair has quickly put their own stamp on the business introducing a range of new menu options. They have also spruced up the décor and alfresco area and recently installed a brand new seating area that allows for an uninterrupted view of the outside world through wide bi-fold windows. So arriving for breakfast, we duly positioned ourselves in position A, next to the window, and began by perusing the menu options on the blackboards behind the counter. Now, each to your own, but whilst dining at Janny’s Café for breakfast, we found it pretty hard to ignore one of the café’s famous signature dishes, the Ozzy Breakfast. Featuring bacon, eggs, sausage, tomato and hash brown and served with chunky slices of toast, the dish has built up quite a reputation for itself at Janny’s and we can assure readers it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Generously sized and

reasonably priced at $17.50, it’s the perfect way to start the day and will satisfy even the largest of appetites. It also comes as a vegetarian option, the Vege Breakfast, with mushrooms and beans instead of the bacon and sausage. Other breakfast options that also caught our eye included the Cheese and Chive Scramble and Salmon Scramble, and for those looking for a quick bite with a morning coffee, a piece of the café’s delicious fruit toast or one of its homemade croissants will certainly do the trick. Lunchtime at Janny’s offers up plenty of mouth-watering choices too. Choose from a range of appetising burgers all served with chips or enjoy Steak, Salad and Chips, a Fisherman’s Basket or a classic Fish and Chips. There are hot rolls, a choice of hotdogs and a delicious range of Focaccias, including the Fetta with sundried tomato, roast capsicum, spinach and chives and the BLT. And finally, of course, let’s not forget the wide range of coffees, cold drinks and smoothies available to enjoy with all of the meals. With its friendly service, tasty home-style cooked food and great location, Janny’s Café continues to attract both locals and visitors in great numbers. It’s the perfect place to grab a snack or a more substantial meal while shopping or spending time out with friends or work colleagues. food & wine today’s world there needs to be either a monetary incentive or a snappy title for people to be polite, mannerly and keen to do their job well. All these qualities don’t seem to come bundled up in the human package as stock standard, they have become add-ons. “Would you like some manners with that?” Perhaps it depends on what sort of day we are having as to how polite or mannerly we are, or how someone else treats us first. A case of, “Well, you were rude first!” Now in some African cultures, it is considered bad manners to walk behind someone in a corridor. It’s considered more polite to pass in front of a person so they can see you, even if it means walking between two people while they are talking. Yes, all cultures are different and in today’s world of multi- cultured communities we need to consider and embrace our differences. Generally, if we act in a respectful or mannerly way, we will be one step closer to achieving this. Getting back to our daily chore of having to strive for mannerly and polite behaviour on a regular basis, I plagiarized a Dire Straits song title and changed it considerably, I think we should live by the code of “Manners for nothing, please and thank-yous for free.” Let there be no cost to a cheery “Hello” or a genuine “How are you today?” Let’s acknowledge the importance of good manners and pleasing demeanours. They go hand in hand. Building a community with these two qualities will make for a more pleasant world. Annie Malone is the proprietor of The Natural Temptation Café, 47 Stephen Street.

Manners For Nothing By Annie Malone

After working in hospitality for over 30 years, I think I know a thing or two about the value of a pleasant demeanour and a friendly smile. Demeanour, a lovely word, means the way a person acts towards others, their conduct, behaviour, bearing or appearance. A person’s demeanour can influence a host of outcomes during an interaction between us Homo sapiens. It needs to be championed by the human race to make us more conscious of how we communicate with one another on a visual level. If we were more inclined to smile and have a friendly disposition to one and all perhaps we would have a better chance of understanding our differences and realise that we are, after all, not quite so different. I once read, “People don’t always remember what you say to them but they will always remember how you make them feel.” Another word that seems to be losing its weight in the public arena is manners. The word ‘manners’ is often preceded by the words ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ A way of doing things to indicate behaviour that is socially acceptable. Politeness. In discussions with my staff about customer service and manners, the subject came up about how some businesses have a great service culture and others are just mediocre. One of my young staff questioned what would be the incentive to go that extra mile. While she herself is an excellent young employee, it was with dismay that I realised that perhaps in

2014 Geographe Wine Show By Jake Atkinson

It’s hard to believe another Geographe Wine Show has come and gone. This year saw a fantastic panel of judges and a mass of outstanding entries that were better than ever! New kid on the block, Mike Edward’s label Bakkheia, took out top gong of ‘Wine of the Show’ with his Aequitas Reserva 2013 while Willow Bridge Estate’s talented wine maker, Simon Burnell, was awarded the Nicholas Baudin Trophy for Excellence in Winemaking. For a full list of the winning wines and producers, go online at www.geographewine.com.au. Here are some of my favourite submissions of the 2014 Geographe wine Show. The 2012 St Aidan Cabernet Sauvignon (Best Cabernet Sauvignon) is a rich and dense Cabernet with cedar, anise and blood plum aromatics. The palate is a seamless collection of ripe berries, sage and liquorice with fine and lightly powdery tannins. Smallwater Estate’s 2013 Shiraz was named best Shiraz of the show. It optimises the quality and potential of

Geographe Shiraz! The nose, laden with mocha, rhubarb and baking spices, binds into a longevous fruit driven palate peppered with cardamom and nutmeg, and completed with a sumptuous rounded finish. As far as alternative varieties go, the Tempranillo grape has really flourished in the Geographe region, accounting for many marvellous wines. Bakkheia’s 2013 Aequitas Reserva is no exception! The wine is rustic, earthy and has a real artisanal feel about it. The nose has red earth, confit berries and cigar box nuances, and a ripe textured plate follows with layers of stewed fruits, chocolate and cayenne pepper. A lengthy smooth tannin structure finishes off this wine perfectly! Jake Atkinson is Sommelier at Mojo’s Restaurant, Victoria Street, Bunbury.

The Geographe Wine Region Welcome to another update on the news and happenings around the Geographe wine region Located a quick 10 minute drive from Bunbury on Dardanup West Road, North Boyanup, Bonking Frog Wines is currently hosting Upcycle Garden Art Exhibition. This competition and exhibition features artworks created from existing materials that have been upcycled and reincarnated into unique and stylish outdoor pieces. The exhibition is free to enter, runs until Sunday December 7th and includes a selection of artworks available to purchase. Harvey based winery Fifth Estate recently got in touch to mention that having sold out of its 2012 Tempranillo in August, pre orders for the new vintage are finally available for delivery in January. It was also one of the Geographe wineries participating at the recent Margaret River Gourmet Escape. It’s wine show season and many Geographe producers have had successful shows. However, special mention must go to Donnybrook winery Oakway Estate, winners of no fewer than 14 medals at this year’s Geographe, Blackwood Valley and WA Boutique wine shows. On top of this, the winery is still basking in the limelight following its four and half star rating in the 2015 James Halliday Wine Companion. There is plenty happening at Ferguson Valley winery St Aidan this summer. Its busy series of events kicks off with a performance by the South West Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday December 7th before the winery holds its annual Movies on the Ferguson Nights on December 12th, January 23rd, February 13th and March 13th. Vineyard 28 will be holding its Annual Quilt Exhibition from Friday December 12th to Sunday December 21st. Open daily between

Wayne and Ria Hammond of Oakway Estate

10am and 5pm, the exhibition will include quilts and patchwork creations from members of the Harvey, Australind and Bunbury Communities. Following its 5 star rating in the 2015 James Halliday Wine Companion, Whicher Ridge Estate has announced the release of new white wine vintages perfect for summer drinking. These new wines include the 2012 Frankland River Riesling, 2013 Geographe Sauvignon Blanc, 2013 Geographe Viognier and 2013 Margaret River Chardonnay. Also in time for summer, the winery has recently opened its unique wine sensory garden. Open 5 days Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm, the garden layout and design nurtures a strong link between food and wine by relating the aromas and flavours of various fruits, herbs and vegetables back to similar or complementary aromas and flavours in a particular wine variety. 72

Feature Winery Barton Jones

Owners of their Donnybrook property since 1999, Jackie Barton and Adrian Jones have been busily producing award winning wines from the 36 year old boutique vineyard since 2004. Having feverishly worked around vintages and balanced running the winery with Adrian’s day job in Perth, the winery is now set to open its spectacular new cellar door overlooking the vineyard. A number of years in the planning, the new cellar door, largely built by Jackie and Adrian themselves, has been primarily constructed using natural and recycled materials. It has also utilised over 300 locally grown straw bales, over 19 tonnes of lime render for the exterior coating and 22 tonnes of Greenbushes basalt for the landscaping. “We are so excited to finally open the doors later this year,” said Jackie, “and we are really pleased with how the building is shaping up. We already have some bookings in the diary for 2015 for private functions.”

In addition to being used as a venue for small weddings and private events, the couple also plans to host a number of food and wine based events throughout the year with a strong focus on locally sourced produce to complement their range of wines. Located 2kms from the centre of Donnybrook, adjacent to State forest and overlooking the town, the new cellar door adds to the increasing number of cellar doors now open in the area. Willow Bridge Estate, 2013 Gravel Pit Shiraz

This award-winning wine from Ferguson Valley winery Willow Bridge Estate recently won Gold at the Perth Royal Wine Show and Gold at the Qantas Wine Show of WA held in Mt Barker. It will also be served in Qantas Business class from early next year. The Gravel Pit block at Willow Bridge is planted on an area which has been significantly re-landscaped. While this is common in Europe, it is a rarity in Australia. The block was the source of gravel for the construction of local roads, so had received a significant haircut before vines were planted. The resulting shallow soil profile has led to deeply concentrated wine, which tends to reflect its rocky name. Whilst it retains the rich, dark chocolate and plummy fruit typical to Willow Bridge, it has a tendency to produce the most macho and mineral style of all of the estate’s Shiraz blocks - with an intense burst of dark spices to match. Available at the cellar door or online at www.willowbridge.com.au. Price $30 per bottle.
