editor’s message

Welcome to issue number 21 of The Mandurah Life! It’s always nice to get comments and feedback from our readers. And 21 issues on, it’s great to hear that the magazine continues to help introduce our readers to new experiences and new places in Mandurah. Just a couple of days before penning this article, I received the following email from an obviously new, very happy reader. I thought I’d share it. “Hello, I recently sat down for a cup of coffee at Gloria Jeans in Mandurah and having nothing to read I picked up a copy of The Mandurah Life. By the time I had finished my coffee, I had persuaded the girls to part with a copy. As a result of this read, my young son and I have gone to see ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ at the

Mandurah Performing Arts, I have found somewhere to get a new fin for my paddleboard from Coastal Life in Falcon, and we have been to the Jasmine Thai restaurant. I am very impressed with this publication and wonder if you mail to private residences. With thanks,” Mrs S Herron. Couldn’t have written it better myself and remember the magazine can be delivered free to your home too! Enjoy the read,

Stephanie Says…

The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert... movement. It’s an individual look and adds a little eccentricity too. Monochrome colours work well as do metallic tones. And, although fashion is currently all about clashing prints, pieces in a multi-tone print look best with a solid colour, sheer fabric layered on top, or alongside lace or leather. Another hot trend is the peplum, a reworked idea of the frill attached to skirts or jackets that was first seen over 200 years ago! It’s a feminine way to nip in the waist and add extra curves. Moving away from the traditional look, it’s exciting to see peplum inspired frills and structured shapes curving their way down blouses and jackets to wave at the hips. More focus on Wish waists comes in available the form of high at Imago waisted skirts. The skirts are coming in all shapes and lengths but they keep the idea of the curvy silhouette in mind. Tuck in the top or leave it out and add a belt to keep the waist cinched in. As it’s spring, shorts are back! Sharp tailored, high waisted shorts, which are short but also have a chic look with a blazer and satin or sheer top. They look sassy too in silk or leather with a subtle flared cut to the leg.

of colour

With the promise of summer around the corner, spring is the season of bright ideas and new fashion thrills. And, just like the bursting buds shouting out ‘springtime’ around us, colour is splashing out of stores and onto the streets. Yellow is the primary colour in which to be noticed this season. It dictates hope, excitement and fun and will be seen in varying intensities from sorbet lemon, through to citrus and neon. As for wearing it, look to find the shade that suits your skin before deciding how far to go. For a bold look, team neon yellow with cobalt blue or tangerine and focus on a clean line to the outfit to create a striking effect rather than a confusion of ideas. Gentler citrus, primrose, mustard and pastel shades are around too in delicate chiffon and sheer fabrics, perfect for creating a monochrome outfit. If you don’t want to commit to a whole outfit in this bright trend, just add a bag, belt, headscarf or heels in yellow or a lick of neon polish to your nails. As well as the array of yellows around this season, spring is also very much about pastels. Colours reminiscent of meringue, sugar coated almonds and sorbets. Lilac, blue, mint, peach, lemon and pink are fabulous as a foil to a neon yellow but make for a great look on their own too. Look out for skinny ankle-skimming jeans in a pastel shade together with a billowy sheer top. Finish off with wedge heels, a spring must-have, or ballet flats, and avoid strappy sandals as they make the outfit look too fussy. Then choose a nail polish in a milkshake colour. Prints have not been forgotten and this season it is the multi-tone print that is taking off. Not prints with a regular repeated pattern but those with an abstract flow of colour and 8

Design For The Home Outdoor Living The outdoor room can be a magical place. It’s the transitional space between indoor living and nature outside, and it’s the location in which we can let the vitality of the seasons flow in while letting our own personal decorating style from within the home flow out. So with the change of season comes a need to refresh and update the alfresco area. It can be as simple as moving the furniture to make use of dappled shade and enjoy other vistas now that plants and trees are becoming more colourful. Or as easy as buying new cushions to reflect spring colours, such as yellow, orange, ocean or pastel shades, or with prints of leaves, exotic birds or forest animals. Little additions, such as decorative ceramic, metal or paper votives, hurricane lanterns, bowls and shallow dishes in wood, stone and metal, overhanging pendants, even old-fashioned, intricate birdhouses in which tealights or tumbling plants can be placed, all add personality and new life to the outdoor room. Furniture will need to be UV resistant, look for light synthetic weaves that need hardly any maintenance or go for a natural wood, such as teak, which is very durable. Whichever sofa, chair or table you choose, let them reflect the style and comfort of your home and make sure they suit the area for its intended activity as well as fit in the space

available. Pieces should help to subtly sculpt the outdoor room while allowing the eye to be drawn out to the garden or surrounding planted areas. Edible plants are becoming more and more popular to add to alfresco areas as people discover the delights of home-grown organic food. Herbs are an easy way to add colour, life and fragrance. Local plants too are an obvious choice as they are well-suited to conditions and will need less maintenance. Once the sun starts to go down, consider how to create an evening ambience with clever lighting. Use uplights in strategic positions to highlight beautiful leaves or architectural qualities of a plant. They can also be fitted within water features, drawing attention to the movement of water while also throwing gentle flickers of light around the outdoor room. Streamlined surface lights can be built into walls, under steps and into decking. And feature pendant or lantern lights are perfect for adding impact whether during the day or night.

Luxury Kitchens

The Outdoor Kitchen

Outdoor kitchens are all the rage with the simple grill on the patio increasingly being replaced by a fully functional alfresco cooking area. So if you are planning a new outdoor kitchen, what should you consider? To get the most from your outdoor kitchen, the area needs to be an extension of your home and living space, so always try and build it into existing outdoor structures. For those designing an area from scratch, choose a location that’s easily accessible from the house. This will mean less distance to carry food and drinks and will also create a natural flow from inside to out. Make sure it has convenient access to electrical wiring, gas lines and plumbing and make sure materials are weather resistant and easy to clean. Marine grade stainless steel is always a good choice for the outdoors. An outdoor kitchen can be fitted with a wide range of options, including pizza ovens, refrigerators, ice makers and wine coolers. You could even consider installing an outdoor fireplace to ensure all year round use. Always ensure that the area is comfortable and inviting with plenty of seating for family and friends to relax in and how about finishing off the area with an outdoor entertainment system and well thought out lighting to add atmosphere? Looking for further information? Local outdoor kitchen specialists Merlin Cabinets specialises in creating both custom built barbecue areas and outdoor kitchens. Using carcasses that are100% waterproof, and weather resistant Caesar stone tops, the team can organise all trades for the project and design a kitchen to fit your lifestyle. Air-Conditioning Say goodbye to evaporative cooling for ever!

Our WA summers are getting hotter and hotter and effective, cost efficient air-conditioning is becoming more and more important. So with the warmer months fast approaching, how are you going to ensure your home remains comfortable this season? Many homes throughout Australia are fitted with evaporative systems and, although these systems are generally cheaper to install and reasonably effective, they do have some obvious drawbacks. Firstly, when the temperature climbs to a more extreme heat, usually when the mercury reaches around 35 degrees centigrade, the systems start to struggle. With record temperatures in WA over recent summers this can mean plenty of days without reliable cooling. Secondly, as opposed to ducted air-conditioning systems, evaporative cooling systems, as the name suggests, don’t offer heating in the home. Therefore, as well as experiencing uncomfortable days during the summer, the home will never properly warm up in the winter months. Finally, we all know what an eye-sore large, roof mounted evaporative units can be. Just have a look around your neighbourhood and see for yourself. So if you have run out of patience with your inefficient evaporative system, why not this summer install a ducted air-conditioning system? Quiet, efficient, easy to maintain and operated via a wall mounted LCD control that

controls all functions, you’ll be able to enjoy cool summer days (and warm winter mornings) at the touch of a button. With some systems, you can even set internal temperatures away from the home through apps available to download onto smart phones. Yes, they are more expensive but the advantages are huge. As well as being able to both heat and cool, humidity levels can be easily controlled as can the temperatures of individual rooms. By controlling the humidity and temperature, the air you breathe is healthier and cleaner and the Allergy Research Foundation now recommends reverse cycle systems as the most effective way to create a low allergen home. Replacing your evaporative system is easier than you think with ducted systems often able to use the same vents as your current evaporative system. All you need to do is take along your building plans to your local supplier and they will plan the rest. If you are thinking of renovating your home, then factor in some extra budget for installing or upgrading your air-conditioning system. A quality ducted brand will often add value to a home and eventually help with resale. For further information on installing a ducted air conditioning system, contact Mandurah specialists Ford and Doonan at Unit 2, 64 Reserve Drive on 9581 6888. 28

Window Fashions

Create an energy efficient and stylish home Windows are one of the biggest sources of heat loss and heat gain in the home and choosing the right window coverings will help to dramatically improve all-year round living comfort. As well as adding the finishing touches to a room, they will help reduce power bills and, in turn, significantly reduce your carbon footprint. So how can you keep your home cool in our hot WA summers? Here are some useful tips:• Shade your windows from the sun from sunrise to sunset. This will keep the sun off the house for as long as possible. Fit your windows with lined curtains, close-fitting blinds or shutters. • Install external blinds or awnings to north, east and west facing windows. These are even more effective for blocking out morning and afternoon rays than internal blinds, curtains or shutters. • Keep doors and windows closed as much as possible to keep hot air out. Close curtains or blinds during the day in rooms that are not being used. When the temperature drops at night, open doors and windows to

cool your house and let hot air out. • Install double glazing. This will act as a highly effective buffer for heat prevention or loss in the long term and will also add value to your property. Admittedly, installing double glazing can be expensive so why not fit a sheer and blackout curtain plus pelmet in each room? This will have the same insulating effect as double glazing at a much lower cost. Want to find out more? Luxaflex Mandurah is the local one-stop shop for a full range of window dressings. In addition to their range of quality blinds and external awnings, the store now offers a range of quality curtains in a selection of stunning fabrics. Plus their stylish range of Newstyle Polyresin shutters will give the home a cool, contemporary feel whilst adding improved insulation. These are available in hinged, bifold and sliding styles and come with a 20 year warranty. To view the complete range, visit the gallery at Shop 1, Sands Shopping Centre on Mandurah Terrace, or call 95862266 to speak to Jean, Sherree or Sharon.

In store, find a huge selection of brands and plenty of helpful advice. Plus, as stockists of the Godfrey Hirst and Victoria carpets ranges, the store has just taken delivery of the new Stainmaster carpet with EverSoft™ SDN fibre. As the most luxurious Stainmaster carpet yet, this new collection includes a specially engineered fine denier fibre, making it much softer to touch than other carpets. EverSoft™ is an advanced solution dyed nylon (SDN) fibre. This means that your home will benefit from the very latest stain blocking technology together with the renowned resilience and fade resistance of SDN. Plus, unlike conventionally dyed carpets, it won’t lose its colour even if cleaned with harsh cleaning solutions. Control 4

The exciting new solution to home automation Part 2 In the previous edition of The Mandurah Life, we introduced you to Control 4, a highly sophisticated home automation system now available in WA. Incredibly simple to use, Control 4 enables the home or business owner to control electronic devices, appliances and systems with a single remote control. This cutting edge technology can also be managed through your smart phone, tablet or laptop by virtue of a special app specially developed for iPhones, iPads and the android market. Uniquely, unlike other competitors in the market that require home automation systems to be installed during construction of the home, Control 4 can be installed quickly and simply into an existing property, meaning the system is considerably cheaper than similar products on the market. In fact, when it comes to cost, Control 4 offers flexibility to suit any budget. Mercedes CLS

The curvaceous coupé with saloon practicality

Back in 2004, the Mercedes CLS created quite a stir. Slotting in between the E-Class and the S-Class, but taking much of its cue from the former, the CLS marked the brand’s return to the executive coupé market after the demise of the E-Class coupé some ten years earlier. Heralded by Mercedes as the ‘the first four-door coupé’, this sleek and stylish trendsetter set tongues wagging with its mix of four-door versatility and thrilling coupé-style looks. Who said that you couldn’t have performance, eye-catching lines and practicality in the same package?

With its long bonnet and dynamic sweeping roof, Mercedes had not only created a design icon but also achieved impressive sales. And, as you would expect from a car that had been responsible for creating a marketplace revolution of sorts, it was soon clear that other luxury brands, such as Audi with the A7 and Porsche with the Panamera, also wanted a slice of the action. So in

response, 6 years on and some 170,000 cars later, Mercedes released the equally stunning CLS Mk11. With 4 engine options available plus an AMG version, the full Mk11 range first became available in Australia in mid-2011. From the front, the all new CLS took much of its inspiration from the top of the range SLS AMG, sporting an aggressive nose, more prominent flared wheel arches and a beautifully contoured bonnet. In addition, the new CLS gained full LED headlamps, electromechanical power steering system and a raft of new technologies, including Active Blind and Lane Assist. Currently, as then, the range

consists of two diesel and three petrol engine options. The CLS250 CDI diesel equipped with a state-of-the-art common rail direct injection system and two stage turbo generates 150Kw and a maximum torque of 500Nm, whilst the 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY generates 195kW and 620Nm of torque. Fuel consumption for the diesel options is an impressive 5.2 litres and 6.2 litres per 100km (combined). Kicking off the petrol range is the V6 350 BlueEFFICIENCY. Developed using lightweight materials to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions, the CLS 350 generates 225kW and 370Nm of torque. Next up is the V8 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, developing 300kW and 600Nm of torque and finally, last but not least, the astonishing CLS 63 AMG fitted with the new AMG 5.5 litre V8 biturbo engine, which achieves a mighty 386kW and 700Nm of torque. Never one to rest on its laurels, exciting news for 2012 is that Mercedes is also launching the CLS Shooting Brake into Australia. ... cont. pg 38

motoring Premiered at the Beijing Motor Show in April, the Shooting Brake, based on the former E-class estate, offers added hatchback practicality with the same range of diesel and petrol variants as the CLS. Expect cars to be

Volkswagen Sturdy off-roader Amarok now available with automatic transmission

The Volkswagen Amarok is VW’s toughest 4x4 yet! Launched into the Australian market in early 2011 and aimed at the booming pick-up sector, its world-class safety levels, capable off-roading ability and impressive on-road ride and handling skills immediately struck a chord with Aussie buyers. As the first big volume Ute from a German brand to be sold down under it was also the first pick-up to be sold in Australia with a five star ANCAP safety rating. The initial model was fitted with a new VW TDI400 engine, a 2.0 litre, 16-valve, fourcylinder diesel, and was available with a six-speed manual gearbox only. Not that anybody was complaining as the car

delivered 120kW at 4000rpm, and towed effortlessly with 400Nm available between 1500 and 2000rpm. It also delivered impressive economy rates with a combined fuel economy figure of around 7.9 litres/100km and just 208g/km of CO2 emissions. Just over 12 months later and the range has been significantly expanded. There are now 2 diesel options, a four-cylinder 90kW/340Nm and four-cylinder 132kW/420Nm (auto only) together with a 2-litre 118kW/300Nm turbo petrol variant. A single cab version of the Amarok is also now available.

40

motoring

Further to this, for the first time, Volkswagen Australia has recently launched the brand new auto Amarok. Fitted with an eightspeed ZF torque converter box designed to better suit off-road demands, the new transmission ups the Amarok’s braked towing ability with new models now able to haul weights of up to 3000kg. Initially, the automatic version is just available in the dual-cab models although this may be extended into the full range at a later date. The eight-speed auto box is a first for this market segment and features a crawler first gear, ideal for negotiating steep off-road inclines, followed by a spread of ratios through to an overdrive-style 8th gear set up for economical highway cruising at around 110km/h. Inside, as with all models in the range, the cabin is a mix of contemporary design and

elegant touches. Offering bags of rear seat room and a long wide tray that’s big enough to load a pallet, there’s also enough space behind the seats to store small pieces of luggage or personal items. The new auto also gets a new centre console with inset buttons for the operation of the 4WD system. Delivering lower running costs and improved on and off-road performance, the new auto Amarok is a unique mix of toughness and refinement. And this is just why it is so appealing. It’s equally at home whether tearing up the terrain or simply cruising around the city. For more information on the all new Volkswagen Amarok auto or to arrange a test drive, contact Barbagallo Volkswagen Mandurah on 9587 9999 or visit their showroom at 140 Pinjarra Road.

The Rise and Rise of Skoda The story of Skoda cars is one of the most remarkable triumphs of the modern motoring age. The company’s extraordinary journey from Eastern European powerhouse to a bit of a joke and back again to world class, awardwinning car manufacturer is the stuff of legend. The revered standing of Skoda today would quite frankly have been totally inconceivable just 20 years ago. It was in the 1970’s and 80’s where the nadir of the Skoda brand was reached with the release of a string of cars that failed to deliver anything other than out-dated technologies and dreadful styling. What was so tragic about this state of affairs was the fact that during the early part of the century, Skoda was recognised as one of the leading industrial powers in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Not only was the company a highly respected car manufacturer, it was also a major arms and heavy goods producer coveted by most leading European nations. However, during the Russian occupation of Czechoslovakia following the Second World War, Skoda became a byword for third-rate build quality and pitiful performance as the Soviet regime quite simply ran the reputation of the manufacturer into the ground. The turning point for Skoda finally came in 1989 with the Velvet Revolution and the fall of communism. With most major companies privatised, Skoda formed a joint venture partnership with Volkswagen, which bought 30% of the company (in May 2000 they became 100% owners of the group). VW had for some time been eyeing up the vast

potential of the Eastern European market and started a revolution of its own. Putting its expertise, technologies and financial muscle to work, VW created one of the finest car plants in the world that led to a new breed of stylish, impeccably built performance led models. Today, Skoda is one of the most decorated car manufactures in the world. Adored by the critics, loved by their customers, the brand regularly leads the polls for customer satisfaction, build quality and after-sales service. In Australia, Skoda currently has four models on offer. The Fabia is a hot hatch with bags of style and plenty of poke. Available in 3 different guises, the flagship Fabia RS, capable of achieving 0-100km/h in under 7 seconds, has recently launched down under. The Octavia is a powerful, spacious family car, offering extraordinary value for money. Available in 2 petrol and 2 diesel engine options, this is Skoda’s biggest selling car. Next, the Superb more than lives up to is name with its mixture of luxurious comfort, refinement, performance and looks and finally, the Yeti, Skoda’s SUV offering (named by Jeremy Clarkson as ‘possibly the best car in the world’ on an episode of Top Gear UK in 2011), combines eye-catching design, safety, functionality and comfort at an astonishingly affordable price. BMW 6-Series Gran Luxurious 4-door coupé let off the leash!

Talk to any BMW owner past or present about the iconic 6 Series and you will spot the glint in their eye a mile off! There has always been something a bit special about this stylish grand tourer, a model that has been around now in various guises since the mid-1970’s. The first generation, famously dubbed the ‘Bavarian Ferrari’, was a popular seller for well over a decade before BMW decided to concentrate their efforts on the 8 Series. Finally in 2003, the new 6 Series arrived in both coupé and convertible formats (E56 and E64) before being replaced last year by the awardwinning F13 and F12 coupé and convertible models.

This year, however, has seen the launch of the all new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé, an altogether quite different beast. The third model in the current 6 Series range to be released, this low-slung, purposeful looking newcomer is actually the first 4-door coupé ever built by BMW. Interestingly, the Gran Coupé was apparently designed before the 2-door coupé and convertible models had ever appeared and the result is a car of breathtaking style and beauty. Continuing the tradition of aesthetically pleasing 6 Series models, the Gran Coupé is a mix of

46

motoring

Coupé

grace, athleticism and aggressive intent even more so if you choose the M Sports package with its 20-inch alloy wheels and dark chrome exhaust outlets! Inside, the dashboard, the front seats and much of the centre console is taken directly

from its 6 Series siblings, although there is one important difference - it feels vastly more spacious. With its two extra doors and extended wheel base there is much improved headroom and legroom enabling the car to comfortably transport two 180cm adults in the back. Currently, the Gran Coupé is available with just the one engine option down under, the 640i 3.0L V6, although a twin-turbocharged V8 model, the 650i, is expected to follow shortly. Not that that should disappoint anybody who gets behind the wheel as this turbo charged petrol power plant is a proven performer. With power peaking at 235kW and a maximum 450Nm of torque available, the Gran Coupé charges from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.4 seconds. Hold on to your hats! As you would expect, there’s plenty of cutting-edge technology on offer from BMW as standard, including radar-assisted active cruise control, internet connectivity LED headlamps, heated seats, climate control, parking sensors, keyless entry and ignition, sat-nav and bluetooth. If you really want to splash out, how about a pedestriandetecting night vision system or a $16,000 Bang and Olufsen sound system?! For further information on the all new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé, contact Auto Classic, 48 Burswood Road, Victoria Park, on 1300 268 526 or Westcoast BMW, Cnr Luisini Road and Hartman Drive, Wangara, on 1300 143 15. 47

Talking Property Downsizing in retirement

By Roz Armstrong

Welcome to my latest column for The Mandurah Life. As regular readers of the magazine will know, I have never been one to shy away from promoting the wonderful lifestyle that residents enjoy in Mandurah and, in particular, the fabulous water-based activities on offer. However, let’s remember that a sizeable part of the city’s population is at an age where a bit less activity is the order of the day. Mandurah is home to increasing number of retirees and with the baby boomers in full flight to retirement, numbers are set to steadily increase over the years to come. The good news, of course, is that Mandurah is a wonderful place in which to retire! With a wide choice of clubs to choose from, plenty of care assistance to be found and a warm, sunny climate, there’s a thriving community on offer. There is also a great choice of retirement villages, lifestyle resorts and strata living estates, many with the use of pools and gyms. The area is full of complexes for the over 55’s, featuring brand new duplex and triples units with double garages together with a large selection of easy-care one bedroom units and apartments.

The need to downsize admittedly can sometimes be forced upon us and leaving the treasured family home can be difficult. Well, if you have reached that stage in life, why not make that move something to look forward to. Start by sorting out all unwanted things that no longer serve a purpose in your life, close a door on your old existence and make way for you brand new life to unfold. You can also take advantage of current market conditions. Right now, our market is undersupplied with well-priced family homes situated on good size blocks close to schools and transport. Sell up, move on and relax contently in your new home surrounded by like-minded neighbours, safe in the knowledge that there are no weeds to pull up or gutters to clean! Roz Armstrong is Licensee/Principal of Marina Real Estate. With over 15 years’ experience in the local property market, Roz and her team pride themselves on assisting people looking to downsize in retirement. Contact her for advice on buying and selling in Mandurah and the surrounding areas on 9586 1677 or 0417 927266, or visit her office at 5, 26 Spinnaker Quays, Mandurah Ocean Marina.

DON’T always assume a stable or increasing rental market. Rental flows from an investment property are rarely guaranteed as there may be periods when you are unable to find a tenant or periods when rental returns are not increasing. DON’T succumb to high pressure sales tactics. Be wary of promises of high returns over the short term and be prepared to say NO!

Buying off plan Most of the above still apply but so do a few more:DO your research on the developer and the builder. Ensure they are reputable and have a proven track record. Inspect some of their recent projects. DO again have a trusted solicitor to go through the contract before signing. An off the plan purchase is fundamentally different to a contract for a pre-existing property purchase and must include clear and comprehensive details on construction, timing, fit out and completion dates. DON’T rely on a valuation from a developer. DON’T agree to release the deposit to the developer prior to completion. If a developer asks for this, they might be having financing difficulties and need the funds to continue with construction. Beware! DON’T assume off the plan properties will increase in value between contract and final settlement. DON’T become a victim of Two Tier Marketing! These schemes are designed to entice interstate buyers into paying a higher price than a local investor would. Victims often succumb to high pressure sales tactics, fail to do their research or obtain an independent valuation. Be wary particularly on the Gold Coast. As always, remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Investing in Property Do’s and don’ts

There’s plenty of heated debate about where property prices are heading in the short term but despite the uncertainty it appears we still see property as a good long term investment. So, if you are considering entering the market in the not too distant future, these timely pointers may help.

Pre-existing property DO ensure you can afford the investment. Make sure you do the sums before committing yourself and remember interest rates and mortgage repayments can rise. DO have written confirmation of finance before signing a contract to purchase. Plus, be aware of loan approvals subject to certain conditions. DO research the property and the local market. Be aware of all recent comparable sales and rentals in the local area before purchase. DO ensure that your deposit is held with an independent and trusted third party. Plenty of property frauds involve investors losing their deposits. DO get a building report and pest inspection. DO remember that property investment is a long term proposition.

Photography with Kelly Doye 5 tips for taking better photos

The change of season always sees budding photographers out snapping. So while you clean the cobwebs off the camera, check out these tips and you will be well on your way to taking some spectacular shots.

try a shutter speed of one second at f8 at an ISO of 100. This will create blur in the moving water and make it look silky. Alternatively, freeze the movement of the water and see each individual droplet.

Tip 1 - Focus and focus lock

Tip 4 - ISO

Get your manual out and find out how to select a centre focus point. It sounds boring but it’s worth its weight in gold! In short, choose your point of focus instead of having the camera guess it for you. With the multi focus setting turned on, often your subject is blurry and something in the mid background is in focus instead.

The ISO is the equivalent of film speed. Different light situations call for different ISO’s. Bright daylight requires an ISO of about 100, whereas overcast days may require an ISO of 400. The lower the light situation the higher the ISO you should use.

Tip 5 - Lighting Don’t be afraid to use your flash in the daytime! Fill flash is great for lighting people’s faces, especially when someone in the sun is wearing a hat and the face is dark. Knowing the capabilities of a flash is paramount to success. Remember, aperture, shutter speed and ISO are all intrinsic to the exposure and the adjustment of one will mean a need to change the other. Is this compromise going to change the outcome of your photo? If so, is it what you want? Have fun trying things out and seeing how photos differ from each other. Try taking a picture of the same thing with varying ISO’s, aperture, shutter speed and focal point. You will be amazed at the difference.

Tip 2 - Aperture The aperture chosen before taking a photo directly affects the depth of field. A shallow depth of field means that only a small amount of the picture is in focus. A large depth of field is achieved when the majority of subjects are in sharp focus. This is the difference between a fantastic shot and an average one, so play around and have fun with it.

Tip 3 - Shutter speed Think about the objective behind the image. To freeze movement, a shutter speed of around 250 to 500 or more will need to be used depending on how fast the object is moving. Blurring movement can also create interest. When using your tripod at the beach,

health & beauty Coming out of winter, our skin is often dehydrated because of exposure to extreme weather conditions, temperatures and artificial heat. It can look dry and lack vitality. However, using the right products will deliver massive results, reenergising and reconditioning skin for a more radiant and vibrant complexion. Your skin will look ready for spring and summer. To achieve this, it is all about a balance. To ensure skin is at its perfect, glowing equilibrium you need to be aware of the particular areas of your skin that need particular care at certain times of the year. It is also recommended to seek the help of a highly trained beauty specialist to find out how to attain your skin’s individual balance. This expert can give you a personal and professional skin consultation in which they take the time to understand your skin. They will consider your age, skin type, occupation and lifestyle to design a programme to keep your skin consistently at its best. Within the programme, the specialist will recommend the most advanced and excellent science based skin care from the world’s leading brands. All skin needs good appropriate cleansers, superb gentle exfoliation, protecting and priming day moisturisers, regenerating and age-fighting night formulae and results driven treatments – including those for the neck. Not forgetting delicate skin around

the eyes, which also requires its own specific moisturising cream. Using a professional skin consultation helps you determine which products are best for you. Your specialist will also recommend certain proven products. Some of the following may well be on the list. To achieve beautiful skin try the range of Shiseido foam cleansers. Shiseido’s Benefiance Cleansing Foam targets ageing and is extra creamy so feels luxuriously indulgent on the skin. The skin around the eyes demands careful attention as it is thinner, less oily and more vulnerable and prone to repetitive stress. Expression lines are also formed more easily. Estée Lauder provides a range of eye creams that illuminate, hydrate, lift and firm to reduce the look of lines, all while protecting the delicate nature of the skin. For dark circles, Clinique has produced Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector, which has been clinically proven to reduce dark circles. Beauty experts often recommend a targeted repair serum, used before a daily moisturiser, in order to get the best visible long term results for your skin. Perfectionist (CP+R), Estée Lauder, is a wrinkle lifting and firming serum in high demand due to its ability to double the skin’s own collagen production in just one week. For night time skincare, Estée Lauder has developed their Advanced Night Repair Serum following amazing DNA research centred on understanding ‘clock genes’. Clinical studies show that skin gets better and better so by your next birthday, who knows you could actually be looking younger!

Allergic Conjunctivitis By Peter Bell

Spring is here but for allergy sufferers, spring can often spell the start of another uncomfortable period of allergic reactions due the increase of grass pollen in the air. One of the most common problems we see at this time of the year is allergic conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the tissue lining the eyelids (conjunctiva) due to a reaction from allergy-causing substances such as pollen and dander. When eyes are exposed to anything you are allergic to, histamine is released and the blood vessels in the conjunctiva become swollen. A reddening of the eyes develops quickly and this is accompanied by itching and sometimes tearing. A rubbing of the eyes simply makes the situation worse.

sunglasses. Unfortunately, for most people this is not often practical. More practical options are to apply cool compresses to the eyes or take antihistamines by mouth (many of these are available over the counter of your local pharmacy). If the above measures don’t help, then treatment from a health care specialist may be necessary. These treatments could include:• Antihistamine or anti-inflammatory drops placed into the eye. • Mild eye steroid preparations applied directly onto the surface of the eye (for severe reactions). • Eye drops that prevent certain white blood cells from releasing histamine. These drops are given in combination with antihistamines for moderate to severe reactions. Treatments generally do relieve the symptoms but symptoms will occur on exposure to the offending allergen. The good news is that there are no serious complications for persistent sufferers. For further information on the effective treatment of allergic conjunctivitis, contact Peter Bell at Eyes on Anstruther, 80 Anstruther Road, on 9535 5894.

Symptoms The symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis are often seasonal and include red eyes, dilated vessels in the clear tissue covering the white of the eye, intense itching or a burning feeling, puffy eyelids (especially in the morning), watery eyes and eye discharges.

Tests Your doctor or optometrist will often test for a number of different signs. They will look for particular white blood cells called eosinophils that show up in discharges and they may also discover small, raised bumps on the inside of the eyelids known as papillary conjunctivitis. They may also conduct a skin test for suspected allergens.

Treatment Of course, the best treatment of all is to avoid exposure to the cause of the problem. During times of high pollen count you could try staying indoors, ensure car windows are kept shut if driving and when outside wear 58

Looking After Your Back By Wayne Sibson

Did you know that over 80% of Australians are expected to suffer from back pain at some point in their lives? It’s an extraordinary statistic. And, on the subject of statistics, did you know that lower back pain is now the single most common reason for work absenteeism? The old saying ‘prevention is better than cure’ could certainly be applied here. Symptoms of simple back pain often occur suddenly and can be triggered by a particular movement but the causes may have been building for some time. So if you want to avoid stress and strain on your spine, always try and avoid doing the following: • Slouching in chairs • Driving in hunched positions • Standing badly • Lifting incorrectly • Sleeping on sagging mattresses • Being generally unfit • Physically overdoing it Inactivity and sudden movements are usually at the root of simple back pain so try and avoid being seated in one place for long periods of time. Our increasing use of computers at home and at work is a key risk to back health. After all, the spine wasn’t designed for sitting in front of a computer or behind the wheel of a car for long periods. If, on the other hand, your job involves more manual work such as lifting, bending or moving heavy objects, posture is the key. Poor lifting posture is one of the most common causes of back complaints with problems caused by a strain or tear to the muscles, tendons or ligaments around the lower spine. In turn, this can produce painful muscle tension and spasms. If I can give one simple piece of advice that can

help all in avoiding back problems, it’s buy a decent mattress to sleep on. Typically, human beings spend one third of their lives in bed so it would seem to make sense to invest in something of reasonable quality. When was the last time you bought a new mattress? Finally, of course, you can really help yourself by staying fit and healthy. Being unfit and overweight can put considerable strain on a back and through taking regular exercise you will not only control weight but strengthen the muscles that support it. For further information on avoiding, managing or overcoming back pain, or to make an appointment, call Wayne at Back Pain Solutions on 9535 2596, or visit his clinic at Suite 2, 94 Mandurah Terrace. 60

Golf Tips With Craig Tapp

Have you had a golf lesson lately? Hi everyone, hope you are all playing great golf. When I go to social functions or BBQs, the conversation often turns to golf. I’m amazed at how often I hear, yeah, I had a golf lesson once but I just played worse afterwards. I then often ask what changes they tried to make. The response is normally something like, I had to move my right hand over more or tried to move my back foot back because I was slicing. I suppose like a lot of businesses you get people who are good and bad at their jobs and technology can also change the way things are done. If you once had a golf lesson and found that you didn’t get much out of it, I’d urge you to try again. I am staggered at how many golfers pay thousands of dollars every year for memberships to play. They will then spend further thousands on clubs, wedges, new drivers, balls, shoes and cart hire, then play horrible every week. I spend my time hanging around the range, putting green and bar and you should see all the frowns coming off the 18th. You can often hear the clubs getting thrown in the boot all the way from the car park. All those thousands of dollars wasted. If only they would spend a couple of hundred dollars on golf lessons! I can assure you they would be surprised by how much more they could enjoy their golf. When I deliver a lesson, I go through all the key fundamentals and highlight some of the key preferences to give the player a good understanding of the golf swing. I then find out the player’s background in relation to previous results and regularity of play, while discussing goals or targets and any injuries that may affect their game. Next, we hit a few

balls to warm up and I go through my check points before capturing camera footage from both behind and side angles. We then go to my teaching area to discuss some observations on the swing in slow motion, using different drawing tools and highlighting posture, swing plane and club face positions. I highlight maybe one or two key things to change to improve results. This is the real secret to improving your swing and ball flight. If you put Rory McIlroy or Adam Scott on video you will still find things wrong. So when I work with my students, I try to find some key changes to help to improve the quality of the ball flight and make the swing a more repeatable and consistent shot. We then go back out to the range with a clear and concise plan to improve the swing. I will also recommend relevant drills or practice swings to help make the swing changes as easy as possible. Results are then monitored including ball flight, divot pattern and distance control. This gives the student a better understanding of the golf swing in general and some clear directions on changes that need to be made. We then set up a practice program and start the golf improvement pathway. Good luck and good golfing,

Tappie

Restaurant Oyster Review Bar Mandurah

By Belinda Morrissy

According to Ken, this is currently the best seller. We also dined on the much-loved Kilpatrick, Atlantic (smoked salmon, sour cream and chives), Chilli and Cheese and Pesto oysters, all of which had their own distinctive flavours.

A perfectly still winter’s night accompanied my first ever visit to the Oyster Bar, Mandurah. Finally, a chance to sample the menu, and, of course, the oysters I had heard so much about!

Dining on oysters to start, naturally we had room for more and we excitedly waited for our second round of treats to arrive. We opted to continue to share and feasted on a delicious Salt and Pepper squid together with a fabulous Antipasto Platter packed with meats, cheese, olives, dukkah, bread, dolmades and, my favourite, stuffed peppers. Finally, we tried the Seafood Platter with its wonderful smoked salmon, prawns, mussels and squid.

With no breeze and an outdoor heater available, the two of us decided to sit outside, overlooking the calm waters of the Ocean Marina. Offering a fantastic vista across the harbour, our welcoming host, Manager, Ken Walters, assured us that even when the weather wasn’t quite so amiable the wine bar was perfectly situated to avoid the hot afternoon sun and the strong sea breezes. So, as we sipped a recommended glass of crisp Margaret River white, Ken divulged the options available on the menu.

Ken and his team offered us the Cheese Board but we conceded defeat and instead relaxed and let our food settle, taking in the surrounds and the gentle background music with the other patrons, many of whom are now weekly regulars.

Sourcing their oysters from the nation’s foremost oyster farms in South Australia, the Oyster Bar proudly offers the very freshest specimens on their menu. Oysters can be purchased in half dozen or dozen quantities as well as in a three or four choice option from the five chilled and four grilled varieties. There are also monthly specials available. However, if oysters aren’t your thing, don’t despair as the menu offers a selection of tapas style food and other delights that change seasonally.

Open 7 days from 11am until late, as licensed premises, patrons are welcome to enjoy a drink without ordering from the menu and the very cool way the drinks are kept cool behind the bar is a definite must-see. With great food, great service and delightful surroundings, Oyster Bar Mandurah is the perfect place to relax and spend time with friends.

We opted to start with a selection of oysters mixing both hot and cold options. My dining partner’s clear favourite was the Oyster Natural served with nothing more than a squeeze of fresh lemon. As somewhat of a self-professed seafood expert he said he could only recall one other occasion where he had eaten such a fresh, juicy oyster.

Open 7 days 11am to late Shop 1, 4 Zephyr Mews, Dolphin Quay Fully Licensed Tel 9534 8825

We both thoroughly enjoyed the Thai Oysters and would happily order the Darleyfella with its tasty spinach Mornay sauce over and over. 67

Restaurant Scusi Review By Belinda Morrissy

Visiting Scusi on a balmy spring evening, on entering, the first sight we encountered was the restaurant’s stunning fish tank filled with an abundance of life and colour. It’s very easy to lose yourself watching the variety of species, which includes, amongst others, a spiky sea urchin among the coral!

stay just a bit longer. It was a difficult decision, especially as there was a tasting plate option, but we eventually chose Coconut Pannacotta with passionfruit coulis from the specials menu and the Bee Hive, chocolate mud cake and honeycomb ice cream encased in Italian meringue with chocolat anglais.

Sipping ice cold champagne, yes, champagne from France, which is available by the glass, we perused the menu. Steered towards an impressive looking specials menu, prepared by executive chef Donna Pearce, which included a decadent sounding Blue Swimmer Crab Ravioli served with a leek broth and plenty of other delicious options for entrée, main and dessert, for starters we couldn’t ignore the Chilli Mussels and my favourite, Bruschetta.

As we pushed our spoon through the soft outer layer, the sweet crunchy ice cream and mud cake were revealed underneath. With all layers working together beautifully, this wonderful, moorish dessert was nicely topped off with a little honeycomb crunch in every other mouthful. We would also highly recommend the Pannacotta. Delightfully light and creamy, the tang of the passion fruit made for a great accompaniment.

Our plates arrived quickly and we thoroughly enjoyed the fresh, tasty flavours of the two serves of Bruschetta. The Chilli Mussels was also a good choice with the dish cooked to perfection and prepared with just the right amount of spice.

Now under new ownership, Scusi is not only a great spot to enjoy a delicious evening meal but now also offers a well-priced set menu at lunchtimes. If you haven’t visited for a while, now is a great time to rediscover their choice of mouth-watering Italian cuisine.

For mains, I chose the Eye Fillet of Beef served with potato compression, wilted spinach, broccoli and red wine jus from the specials menu. The generous portion was tender and delicious with the savoury jus offering just enough sweetness to perfectly complement the fillet. For our second main, my partner chose the Fish of the Day, Bald Chin Groper, a fish that is often considered to be one of the best eating fish. The groper was served grilled with mash and broccolini and coated in a flavoursome dill cream sauce. Excellent!

Spring Speedy Recipe broccoli pasta

Broccoli is one of the super foods, a term often banded around when we are talking about health and wellbeing. Super foods have been found to be highly superior to other types of food because of their nutritional benefits. This recipe makes it easy to enjoy broccoli’s antioxidants, high fibre content, vitamin C and beta carotene (an antioxidant that’s converted to vitamin A in the body). To retain even more nutrients from the broccoli, try steaming it instead of adding it to the boiling water. Then simply add to the cooked pasta. For a more filling alternative, gently cook sliced chorizo with the garlic.

Ingredients (Serves 4) 200g pasta 4 cups fresh broccoli olive oil 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped ¼ cup grated Parmesan ½ teaspoon chilli flakes salt and pepper to taste shaved Parmesan to serve

Method In a large pot, bring salted water to the boil. When the water is boiling, add pasta and broccoli until pasta is al dente. Reserve approximately 1 cup of the water and drain pasta and broccoli. Using the same pot, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and add garlic until it starts to colour. Reduce the heat and return the pasta and broccoli to the pot. Mix well with another tablespoon of olive oil, grated Parmesan, chilli flakes and salt and pepper to taste. Break up larger pieces of broccoli. Add a little of the saved pasta water and combine to the mixture. Add more of the water according to your desired consistency. Serve with the shaved Parmesan on the side.

Matching Wine with Food Part 2 Matching the right wine with the right food, like many other things in life, often comes down to personal preference. There are plenty of people out there who will tell you should always have white wine with fish and red wine with beef etc. but let’s not forget we all have different palates and different opinions. In this most subjective of topics there are however some basic principles worth applying. Below are a few rules worth adhering to.

Appetisers Pre-dinner nibbles such as bruschetta, canapés or olives are designed to give the palate a jump-start and to get those tastebuds tingling. Therefore, at this point it’s important not to overload the palate with big, weighty, powerful wines. Focus on refreshing styles that help to set the scene and awaken the tastebuds rather than wines that steal the show. Champagne is an ideal accompaniment to a range of appetisers and in Australia we have a range of fabulous sparkling wines that more than do the job. Looking for a great WA sparkling wine, try the Sparkling White from Margaret River based Becketts Flat. Available online at $31.50 a bottle.

particularly with vinegar, things can get complicated. For seafood salads, generally the wines that go with seafood will work, for Nicoise and Caesar salads, try a tangy Sauvignon Blanc, for a chicken salad, try a middle weight Chardonnay and for pasta salads, try an acidity-rich, dry white to cut through the stodge.

Mains The great Aussie barbecue is an institution full of explosive flavours and laden with platters of red meat and fish. Wines in this environment need to be up to the flavour challenge! For red meats, drink wines full of fruit with plenty of body. Choose a Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache or Zinfandel. Peel Wine Estate offers a fabulous Zinfandel with bags of flavour and spices. The adventurous amongst you could also try a sparkling red; this style is becoming increasingly popular. If it’s chicken or fish you are serving up, then white wines should still have the same quality – fruity in flavour. Try a Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay or Semillon. ...cont. pg 74

You don’t have to be a midwife to help us deliver $75 million in Extra Healthcare to the Peel region.

The President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA), Dr Richard Choong, believes the Peel Health Campus’s redevelopment proposal “offers a vital improvement to health services in the southern corridor” and “will go a long way to solving capacity issues in the area.” Peel Health Campus is ready to commence work on delivering the proposed medical and hospital improvements but we can’t go ahead until the State Government provides its approval. If you’d like to support us, please phone 9531 8594 or visit www.peelhc.com.au and complete the simple Community Survey Form. The sooner we get the State Government’s approval, the sooner you’ll be able to benefit from the Extra medical services and hospital facilities our $75 million redevelopment will deliver.
