Summer Fashion Embrace

Stephanie Says…

The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert... swimwear and the essential maxi dress), the new ‘mirrored’ print effect, and floral prints. Small flowers or oversized, it’s a pictureperfect, flirty look and right on trend. Summer fashion is also about embracing the mix of prints that have been so popular in recent seasons. Take your pick from digital, multi-tone, geometric or tribal with the current eye-catching trend being to wear your print from head to toe. For the less brave, go for printed pants with a neutral top. Choose items for your wardrobe that are fluid and airy to encapsulate that relaxed summer feel, such as floaty chiffon Wish shirts, kaftans, maxi dresses available and palazzo pants. at Imago Asymmetric hemlines add to the easy flowing look. If you like more structure, the peplum has held its ground since spring and there are also fluted hemlines that add a girlie edge to slimline dresses. For men, there’s a relaxed chic style that’s big this summer. It involves chinos (sandy or dark ink blue), casually rolled up to show off tanned ankles and expensive leather shoes, a thin cotton scarf around the neck and a linen or print shirt, tucked in or unbuttoned and loose. Print loose shorts work well too and add to that a straw trilby or fedora. The Olympics are still inspiring fashion with crew necks, polos and cardigans in fine knits of blue, grey and white and with flashes of tangerine, yellow or pink. Men - embrace it, the bright colours are here to stay!

the season!

From the sweetest soft pastels through to exotic jewel tones and daring neon, colour is everything this summer. And this is far from being a temporary fad! The recent European spring-summer fashion shows were positively packed full of colourful treats! Daring neon, an obvious choice for younger women, is a must-have tone this season and can be easily worn by all ages. Pick a neon nail polish or clutch, ballet flats or heels and combine with a neutral outfit to create a purposeful, uplifting statement. At the other end of the spectrum are pretty pastels. Wear them in relaxed outfits for a fresh summer look, such as a billowy chiffon shirt with shorts, or milkshake skinny pants with a loose nude singlet. Navy and white, the classic nautical stripe, is given a colourful update this summer with accessories in turquoise, gold and sea green. The jewel inspired colours from the sea give the look a younger, more playful edge. Tuck in a striped top to wide legged pants and add towering peep toe wedges in white. And the print of the season? Well, the standout designs are bright tropical with exotic flowers and wild animals (perfect for 12

Focus on Pinjarra

Edenvale Heritage Precinct

Located 86km south of Perth, 21km south-east of Mandurah and perched on the Murray River, Pinjarra is one of the oldest European settlements in WA. Part of the Shire of Murray and with a population of 4,255 (2011 census), the town is the home town of former state premier Sir Ross McLarty and boasts a long and eventful history. Pinjarra, whose name is said to come from the Aboriginal word Pindjarup, meaning swamp, was established by British settler Thomas Peel. In 1830, he was granted 250,000 acres stretching from Cockburn Sound to the Murray River to develop into farming land and, the following year, Peel reserved land for a town site near a ford over the Murray River. As settlers began to move into the area, tensions with the local Nyungar people flared, resulting in the infamous Battle of Pinjarra in 1834 where a large group of Nyungars was killed by British colonists. Europeans continued to move into the area and by 1837 further land had been allocated to settlers, houses constructed and roads built. In the 1840’s, the first of five bridges to cross the Murray River was constructed and, in the 1880’s, the construction of the Perth-Bunbury Railway delivered a further boost to the town. Its location as a main stopover on the South Western Highway running between Armadale and Bunbury was also a significant factor in the town’s growth during this period. The timber and farming industries continued to underpin the local economy throughout the early 1900’s until, in the 1960’s, fortunes were changed forever by the discovery of vast bauxite deposits in the adjacent hills. In 1972, Alcoa opened an alumina refinery near

Pinjarra, bringing significant economic growth and the resulting population boom to the area. Today, Pinjarra is a thriving modern town that successfully combines its role as one of the fastest growing areas in Australia with its historical past. As the main town within the Shire of Murray, it has seen the shire’s population double between 1986 and 2006 and forecasts expect the population to double again within the next 20 years. Now home to an impressive new shopping centre, the town organises an annual Pinjarra Festival at the Edenvale Heritage Precinct and, with a golf course, restaurants and wineries within easy reach, it offers an attractive country-town lifestyle. For visitors, the town also has plenty of attractions. The Hotham Valley Railway, operated from Pinjarra, is a heritage railway that runs over a 32km section of the original Pinjarra to Narrogin line. A popular haunt, the railway operates both steam and diesel locomotive hauled trains and is staffed almost entirely by volunteers. Another must-see is the fascinating settlement of Fairbridge, a former farm school for British orphaned children. Now a holiday complex, the school was established by Kingsley Fairbridge and operated from 1912 to 1983. Finally, Peel Zoo attracts hoards of visitors each year eager to experience the ‘hands-on experience’ provided. The large walk-through aviary and Tasmanian Devils are the star attractions. For further information on Pinjarra and its attractions, visit the Pinjarra Visitor Centre in the Edenvale Heritage Precinct, Corner Henry and George Streets, or call 9531 1438. 34

Finally, in the early 1970’s, fully reticulated fairways and grass greens were added. Today, the course enjoys a reputation as having some of the finest greens amongst country courses, is available for green fees and includes a pro shop and bar facilities. Mercedes-Benz SL All-new luxury roadster raises the bar, again!

Often touted as the world’s most successful premium roadster, the Mercedes SL (meaning ‘Sporty and Light’) is a modern motoring legend. As the flagship of the Mercedes range, the marque has been synonymous with style, performance and breathtaking design for almost 6 decades. Manufactured in Stuttgart, Germany, initially the SL was developed purely for racing purposes, or more specifically, to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In March 1952, the prototype of the car charged to do just that was unveiled, the 300 SL Coupé. The car quickly became famous for its doors that were cut deep into the roof and hinged at their top to give drivers easy access. When opened, they resembled the wings of a seagull leading to the car acquiring the ‘Gullwing’ nickname. In June of that year, the car came first and second at Le Mans and became an overnight sensation.

The first SL as we know it, the 1958 300SL Roadster, was followed by the 1963 230SL. This was the first of the road versions that sold in big numbers and featured a distinctive optional hardtop. By dipping in the centre, the height of the side windows was maximised, improving both visibility and ease getting in and out. The result was a roof that looked like a pagoda, and the name stuck with the car. Two further new SL’s followed in 1972 and 1990 before the unveiling of the fifth generation in 2003. By now, the SL had sold over 600,000 units worldwide and could count amongst its customers a whole host of famous celebrity owners. Steve Jobs was said to trade in his SL every 6 months for a new one to avoid needing license plates!

40

motoring As you would expect, with its unique pedigree and unrivalled reputation for cutting edge design, any new SL was always going to be worth the wait. Well, the wait is over with the launch of the all-new, sixth generation SL first premiered at the Detroit Motor Show in early 2012. With the latest version, Mercedes-Benz has completely redefined the luxury roadster segment that it helped to create. Taking its cue from the SLS, the new SL features a brand new lightweight aluminium body shell, which not only gives the car a more muscular, purposeful look but dramatically improves performance and fuel efficiency. outgoing model, almost everything on the car is new and almost every current SL driver is guaranteed to want one! In Australia, the SL is available in 4 different formats. Firstly, the 3498cc V6 SL350 BlueEFFICIENCY delivers 225kW at 6500rpm and is capable of a top speed of 210km/h (limited). Next up is the fabulous 4663 V8 SL500 BlueEFFICIENCY producing 320kW at 5200rpm. Then we are into the AMG models. The 5461cc V8 SL63 AMG with an electronically

limited top speed of 250 km/h delivers 395kW at 5500rpm whilst the astounding 5980cc V12 SL65 AMG produces an astonishing 463kW at 4800rpm. Almost 60 years on and thousands of happy customers later, one thing’s for sure, the Mercedes-Benz SL still rules the roost! VW Crossover Passat Alltrack wagon joins the family

Compromising the design and make up of a car to appeal to different market sectors is a pretty difficult trick to pull off successfully. However, the team at Volkswagen is a clever lot and, we think, with the new Passat Alltrack they have come up with a bit of a winner. If you regularly need to negotiate slightly tougher terrain, require a larger towing capacity than a normal car or want a nimble off-roader without needing an SUV, then the VW Passat Alltrack could be just what you are looking for. Based on the standard Passat, the Passat Alltrack is VW’s first crossover wagon, a car that aims to bridge the gap between the family station wagon and the traditional SUV. Combining the best bits of both, the Alltrack drives like a Passat and even looks a lot like a Passat with one obvious difference; it’s just at home off-road as it is on. Fitted with the VW 4Motion all-wheel drive system, the Alltrack has had its ride height raised by 30mm to 165mm and, with other modifications carried out to the chassis, there’s an 1800kg towing limit on offer, up 200kg over the standard Passat. The Alltrack is also fitted with a number of specialised body parts that offer a higher level of

protection in off-road conditions, including a metal skid plate on the underside of the engine that protects the gearbox, sump and exhaust system. These extra body parts have also helped to change the visual appearance of the car with the SUV-style bumpers and underbody protection panels at the front and rear of the car adding to the more rugged appeal. Another excellent feature is the availability of the same off-road driving program already fitted on the VW Touareg and Tiguan SUV models. This controls the ABS, throttle response, electronic differential lock and shift points for maximum traction across unstable surfaces. Available in the one engine option, the Alltrack is powered by a highly capable 2.0-litre 125kW TDI engine that generates a maximum 350Nm of torque between 1750

motoring

and 2500rpm. Fitted with a six-speed DSG transmission, there is also a very handy fuel-saving function which frees the vehicle from engine braking when the driver takes his foot of the accelerator. The result is more momentum when coasting, a combined fuel-consumption of just 6.3L per100km and CO2 emissions of 166g/km. Inside, as with all Volkswagens these days, the level of refinement and comfort is highly impressive. The list of standard features puts many other manufacturers to shame and on the Alltrack the inventory includes an electrically operated tailgate, daytime driving lights, an electric parking brake, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth phone and music streaming, front and rear parking sensors with rear-view camera, leather seats, a 6.5-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation

and 30GB hard drive and heated front seats amongst others. The extensive level of equipment continues with the safety features of the car fitted with 8 airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution with brake assist, an electronic stability program with electronic differential lock and anti-slip regulation. Equally at home on the bitumen or the rough stuff, the VW Passat Alltrack is the perfect mix of off-road toughness and on-road refinement. No compromises have been made here! BMW M6

Breathtaking coupé and convertible models arrive down under!

Fresh from drooling over the Gran Coupé, BMW’s four door 6-Series, in this edition of The Mandurah Life, we take a first look at the latest high-performance twins from its M division, the M6 Coupé and M6 Convertible. As the flagship models of BMW’s high performance M-Division, a division that celebrates 40 years this year, it’s no surprise that BMW have pulled out all of the stops on these twin supercars. With blistering performance, a plethora of luxurious features, added comfort and vastly improved fuel efficiency, there’s no doubt that BMW’s Motorsport subsidiary is in rude health 4 decades on. As with all M-Series models, the M6 Coupé and Convertible have been given an instantly more aggressive appearance over the rest of the BMW 6 Series line-up. Measuring 28mm longer, 44mm wider and 8mm lower than the outgoing versions, the visually more aggressive appearance is provided by a deep front spoiler featuring larger air ducts and a shallow lip. A distinctive M-specific grille with M6 badging, widened front wings, uniquely shaped exterior mirrors, larger side sills and, on the coupé, a stepped roof panel completes the dynamic front-on look. At the rear, new horizontal reflector elements integrate into a reshaped rear bumper and magnificent quad chromed exhausts and standard 19-inch wheels add further appeal. Closely related to the recently launched BMW M5 Sedan, both M6 models share the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine and seven-speed double clutch gearbox. With 412kW and 680Nm of torque available, this new unit offers a

48

motoring

significant improvement over the outgoing M6 models developing an extra 39kW and 160Nm respectively. Plus, by being around 20kg lighter than the M5, the 1850kg M6 coupé is able to reduce the M5’s claimed 0-100km/h acceleration figure by 0.1 second to 4.2 seconds. The performance figures of the 1980kg M6 Convertible are just a touch behind racing from 0-100km/h in just two-tenths of a second slower but matching its fixed roof sibling’s top speed. Featuring a hugely impressive list of standard electronic driving aids and safety features, the M6 comes with ABS (anti-lock brakes), DSC (dynamic stability control) ASC (anti-skid control), CBC (cornering brake control) and DBC (dynamic brake control). A steel disc braking package featuring 400mm disks at the front and 396mm discs at the rear is also standard plus, for the first time on the M6, optional carbon ceramic brake discs are also available. Supercars, of course, don’t come cheap with the coupé’s price around $290K and the convertible’s a touch over $300K but the all new M6 is an intoxicating mix of performance, styling and comfort. It’s a compelling addition to the already legendary status of the BMW M-division. Skoda Rapid The success story continues!

2013 is shaping up to be a big year for award-winning, Czech car manufacturer Skoda. With a raft of new models expected down under, including an all-new Octavia, first off the rank is the Skoda Rapid, recently unveiled at the Sydney Motor Show. Slotting in between the Fabia and the mid-sized Octavia, the compact-sized Rapid is pitched against the likes of the Holden Cruze, Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3. It’s also the first of the Skoda models to feature the marque’s new look. Boasting the new Skoda badge, a chrome grille and clover leaf patterned headlights, the profile of the car is enhanced by a longer wheelbase that gives the car a sleek coupéstyle appearance. Initially available with 2 petrol engine options, a 77kW 1.2 litre TSI with 175Nm of torque, and a 90kW 1.4 litre TSI with 200Nm of torque, diesel variants are expected to arrive later next year. Combined with the highly rated twinclutch DSG gearbox, acceleration is expected to be responsive and performance lively. Of course, the Rapid’s main target market will be families and there is a lot here for families

to like about this car in addition to the performance levels. Firstly, try the price. Expected to be on sale at around $25K drive-away, the Rapid is yet another example of Skoda’s ability to combine impressive build quality with highly competitive pricing. It’s no wonder Skoda’s sales are up 70% year on year! Next up, families will love the interior comfort and safety levels. Fitted with ABS and ESC as standard, passengers are protected by front, side and head airbags, and the longer wheel base means greater interior space and a large boot totalling 530 litres of storage space. And who wouldn’t fail to be impressed by a brand new innovation; a door-mounted rubbish bin designed to keep the interior clear of clutter! Families will most certainly appreciate that! Expected to be on sale in early 2013, the Skoda Rapid offers a high quality, well-priced alternative in a highly competitive market. Expect it to provide some serious competition! For more information on the all-new Skoda Rapid, contact Barbagallo Skoda Mandurah on 9587 9999 or visit their showroom at 140 Pinjarra Road. 50

A Blooming Summer There are plenty of ways to get a healthy garden for summer and most experts will often recommend reducing grassed areas, optimising shady tree cover and incorporating more decking or pavers. This is all good advice but what about the season’s colours? What a shame to have to miss out on beautiful foliage and flowers especially as, with a bit of careful nurturing, many will thrive in our hot summers! So, if you are after a bit of colour in the garden this summer, why not start by planting up some pots. Although potted plants are notoriously difficult to keep healthy during the hot weather, there are hardy options that will survive. Flowering containers bring the garden closer to you, they help to sculpt areas and they add gorgeous vibrancy to your outdoor area. One of the most attractive of plants able to survive the harsh WA sun and lack of rainfall is the native hibiscus. It is a shrub with dark green foliage and its flowers come in many colours, particularly striking are the mauve, deep blue and orange varieties. As with all native plants, once established, the hibiscus needs only a small amount of water. Or try one of the many bromeliads. Although

they all flower at various times of the year, there is a way to trigger a mature plant into flowering at your desired time. Place the bromeliad in the shade alongside a banana skin or apple and cover the fruit and plant in plastic for 3 days. The gas given off by the decaying fruit promotes flower growth. Put the plant back to its usual spot and a flower should appear within 4 months. For hanging baskets as well as pots, choose a geranium with its cottage garden appeal. Or, currently popular are the ‘butterfly bushes’ or gauras. These reliable waterwise plants do well in full sun and their butterfly-like flowers bloom in white and shades of pink. Bougainvilleas are wonderfully dramatic climbing plants and hardy enough to prosper in full sun. However, they can easily get out of control if not pruned back. Try opting for a compact version, a ‘bambino bougainvillea’, as these have spectacular flowers yet have a restricted growth habit so are perfect for pots. Ask at your local garden centre about new flower releases and find out what colourful options you can add to your backyard or patio. Remember to take in all the advice available about looking after your new plants. You’ll find it isn’t as tricky as you thought! 52

and large sliding glass doors can all be measured and fitted with shutters, plus they are available in most colours to help match with the rest of the room. Easy to maintain, a quick wipe with a damp cloth will remove dirt, dust and grime, shutters also dramatically improve energy efficiency. With the ever rising cost of energy, most homeowners are looking for any means available to cut down on electric and gas bills. A great investment that will pay itself off many times over is to install shutters on windows that are regularly exposed to intense sunlight, wind or rain. Noise-free, shutters won’t clank and bang in the wind the way blinds or shades do. They also, unlike curtains, won’t blow halfway across the room, they are durable and will last for years, add an extra level of security to the home and may even add value to the home. Long life expectancy, excellent visual impact and great value have all added up to increased sales of interior shutters as more and more homeowners catch on to the benefits in installing this form of window covering. Want to find out more? Luxaflex Mandurah stocks a stunning range of Newstyle Polyresin shutters available in hinged, bi-fold and sliding styles with a 20 year warranty. To view the complete range, visit the gallery at Shop 1, Sands Shopping Centre on Mandurah Terrace, or call 9586 2266 to speak to Jean, Sherree or Sharon.

Window Shutters Making a statement As one of the most prominent features in a room, window treatments are one of the first things that grab the eye when entering a living space. Capable of controlling the ambiance and overall mood of a room by the way they filter, block or let in the light from the outdoors, choosing the right style, design, and colour is vital in creating the right impact. Currently, one of the most popular forms of window treatment is indoor shutters and it’s not hard to see why they continue to be the product of choice. Aside from their aesthetic appeal there are a number of added benefits to having them installed. A product of real quality, shutters make a fabulous interior design statement. Able to complement any style or interior design palette, their clean and crisp lines are a world away from the wrinkled, worn-out look that sometimes comes with the use of curtains or blinds. Their timeless, traditional look also fits with just about any home decor scheme from contemporary to country and elegant to Mediterranean. Another advantage to shutters that they can be custom made. Design for the Home Flooring

It’s also important to understand that the only price of the job that matters is the total cost of the job.

The real cost of free installation!

Make a statement with bright flooring!

When purchasing a new carpet for the home it’s always important to know what you’re getting. A carpet is a long term investment, requires considered research and is one that shouldn’t be made on a whim. During the decision making process, many customers are enticed by special ‘one-off ’ promotional offers. Common promotions will include free underlay, free installation or whole house installation for a nominal fee. However, here’s where you need to be careful. Many of these offers may not be as attractive as they seem and often lead to the entire job turning out to be a lot more expensive than first realised. It’s common practice for some retailers to manipulate the price to make certain elements, such as underlay and installation, look extremely cheap. However, they will then increase the price of other parts of the job, such as the removal and disposal of flooring, furniture removal, trims, accessories, stairs or even the carpet itself.

When choosing colours for your room, be bold and choose bright colours to give your room a quick contemporary lift. Bright colours bring character to a room and allow you to add your own signature style. Add contrast by sticking to two strong shades against a base of black or white. For that extra finishing touch, opt for features, such as colour block furniture or interesting lighting. Statement lighting will bring character to any room and bright retro furniture will not only look great but will also provide a real talking point amongst guests. The above information was supplied by Choices Flooring by Vogue. As part of one of Australia’s leading retail cooperatives, Choices customers get the best of both worlds; a great selection of styles and competitive pricing along with industry leading guarantees. For further information on the Choices range of carpets, visit their Mandurah store at 60 Pinjarra Road or call 9535 5660. 56

Property Talk Fabulous Falcon the holiday coast

Since I arrived in Mandurah in 1987, the changes to the town have been extraordinary. Previously a quiet little fishing village, over the past 25 years, Mandurah has been transformed into a thriving and dynamic place in which to live. With regular markets and an impressive entertainment centre, the foreshore is an exciting yet relaxed hub of activity. Tourism is also well catered for with plenty of hotel accommodation and short term holiday units, and residents can enjoy high rise living alongside trendy alfresco restaurants. Take a wander past the entertainment centre and cinema to appreciate the huge development on the Old Peninsula Hotel site. Our skyline has been dramatically changed by apartment buildings and inner city unit developments. With new shopping centres, new schools, the Peel Health Campus and the train line from Perth, Mandurah is not only a great place to live but is also now an easy commute to and from Perth. Just 6km south of Mandurah discover Falcon, one of my favourite areas. Situated on a narrow stretch of land between golden beaches and the peaceful waters of the Peel Estuary, the area was transformed when the Dawesville Cut Bridge was opened in 1994. Traditionally a popular holiday destination, the area still has the original caravan parks sitting on the estuary front together with a mix of old beach homes sitting on big 1000sqm blocks and the newer areas to the south. The newer areas include beautiful canal mansions and townhouses, some with their own jetties, and access to the superb Peel and Harvey Estuary systems. The pristine surf beaches of the Indian Ocean are another big draw card. Falcon, along with many other suburbs of Mandurah, offers a wide selection of holiday rentals during the holiday season, although

school holidays all year round are always popular. Travelling south over the bridge find beach suburbs Florida and Melros, and Dawesville on the estuary. The choice of property here is vast with a huge array of block sizes and a mixture of older style holiday homes sitting amongst palatial new homes. Currently, the average price of a 4-bed, 2-bath family home in the newer estates (block size 550sqm to 750sqm) is $350,000 to $450,000 whereas an older style holiday home will cost around $350,000 to $500,000, depending on location and views. Or spend up to $1.5m on a home right on the estuary front with spectacular estuary or ocean views. Half acre blocks on the hill east of the highway also offer stunning views across to Florida and Melrose surf beaches to the west and are just 500 metres from the picturesque estuary foreshore to the east. With a local school bus service into Mandurah, local schools, excellent shopping in Falcon just a 5 minute drive away and an a vast array of activities readily available including surfing, fishing, jet ski-ing, water skiing and golf, the area offers something for all. The Return of the Personal Loan It seems only a few years ago that experts were predicting the demise of the personal loan. Back then, it appeared that personal loans, once a core product of banks and credit societies, were slowly being replaced by other credit options. Credit cards and finance packages were becoming a more attractive option for those making large purchases with many offering extra incentives to consumers, such as rewards points programs and extended interest-free periods. Today, however, the personal loan is still as popular as ever. Many borrowers are moving away from putting major items on credit cards as these purchases are notoriously harder to pay off on a card. Credit cards may offer the convenience of credit on demand but the downside is the high interest rate charged if balances are not paid off within a specified period. Personal loans, however, with their lower interest rates are a smarter choice for purchases that will take longer to pay back. Plus, unlike finance packages available through major stores or car dealerships, not only are interest rates lower but they also don’t include hidden fees or conditions.

It’s often tempting to refinance a home loan to make a major purchase, such as a car or a holiday. After all, it means there is only one loan to pay back and manage. However, unless the extra amount is paid off quickly, borrowers are likely to end up paying more in the long run. Personal loans have a shorter time frame than home loans, so even though the interest rate may be slightly higher, they are more likely to be paid off faster. This means less interest is paid across the term of the loan. Personal loans also provide peace of mind. They have set repayments and a set term so it’s easy to keep tabs on approximate monthly payment amounts and how long it will take to pay the loan back. The following information was provided by Police & Nurses Credit Society. It’s personal loans allow members to make additional repayments and to request top-ups if they encounter unexpected expenses. To find out more about personal loans, call 13 25 77, visit pncs.com.au or drop in to the local branch at Shop 62, Centro Mandurah.

Sunset shots

Summer photo fun!

We are very spoilt on the west coast because we can take our sunset shots over the ocean! If you enjoy taking photos of sunsets, don’t pack the camera up as soon as the sun goes over the horizon! The colours will continue to change in the sky for half an hour after the sun has set and this is often the time when you will get the better shots. It can also make for a more interesting picture if you incorporate a boat or tree, for instance, giving the photo a point of reference. Underexposing your shot by half to 1 stop can help saturate your colours.

With summer here, there are plenty of opportunities to get the camera out. We spend more time at the beach and we have the festive season to look forward to as well. Here are some practical tips on how to get some great shots to remind us all year round of those fun summer get-togethers.

Beach shots

The time of day and the direction of the sun are important here. The beach is a very bright place in the full sun and this is exacerbated when it reflects off the ocean. This will translate as white, blown out backgrounds with little to no detail. Look at where the sun is before you take your shot. If it is directly behind somebody, use your flash to light their face. This achieves a nicely exposed background and your subject won’t be in shadow. Of course, it is equally difficult to get a great shot if people are looking into the sun and squinting. So the key is finding a happy medium. Also, remember to choose a fast shutter speed to ensure the successful freezing of movement and water particularly when shooting photos of people swimming, running and playing on the beach.

Family get togethers

It is a fun challenge to capture candid photos of family members enjoying themselves and if you want the whole family in a photo, look for an area with an uncluttered background to keep the shot as simple as possible. Preplanning the location before gathering the family for a photograph will help avoid unwanted objects, such as rubbish bins, barbecues etc. popping up in your shot. Take multiple photos to ensure you have one good one where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling. The more people in the photo, the more photos needed to be taken to ensure success.

Beauty and the Beach! Looking fresh and flawless at the beach is no easy task. The effects of the sun, sea and sand can combine to produce disastrous results for skin and hair. Consider these tips and spend your time at the beach relaxing in the knowledge that you’ll be looking fabulous, all day long! For lips, forget about a lipstick or gloss that gets sticky and will need to be reapplied, and opt for a stain that is long lasting. Try tints from Bloom and Benefit. Or go for a lip balm, preferably with an SPF and with a hint of natural colour. No one has perfect skin but applying sunscreen and a lightweight concealer, such as Clinique’s Airbrush concealer, may be all you need if you add subtle colour to your cheeks with a cream blush. Foundation will be almost impossible to keep looking immaculate under the heat of the sun. Use Touche Éclat from Yves Saint Laurent to lighten dark circles under eyes and to add highlights to brow bones and tops of cheekbones. And Benefit produces beautiful iridescent highlighters for a dewy shimmery look. It has to be waterproof when it comes to mascara. To boost its lasting power even more, dust translucent powder over the lashes before applying the mascara. Try painting just the upper lashes; it gives a more natural

look and avoids the chances of smudging onto cheeks. Don’t forget eyebrows as they frame the face in a beautifully natural way and choose a waterproof eyebrow pencil. Hair is probably the major problem for many at the beach. A simple way to avoid frizzy hair is to use an oil-based, leave-in conditioner that protects from the sun. For styling longer hair, have a low, side-swept pony tail or braid, or pin a loose bun to the nape of the neck. Or go for the classic, tousled beach look by using a spray product on damp hair, avoiding the scalp. Use your fingers to work the product in while scrunching your hair then put your hair into a loose bun and gently dry it off with a hairdryer. Finally, pack essentials in your beach bag. Start off by including waterproof, broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF30+ and reapply according to directions. Pack your leave-in conditioner as well as lip balm and a nifty pack of mini powder blotting papers or tissues (try The Body Shop or Bobbi Brown). Don’t forget water, a towel, kaftan or loose cotton shirt and a good read. Then just ensure you have a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses; each is vital for both sun protection and for finishing off a perfectly turned-out beach look. 68

UV Protection for the Eyes By Peter Bell

The consequences of exposing skin to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) are well known, but most people are still unaware of the potential damage caused to the eyes from prolonged exposure to UVR. Ultraviolet damage to the skin and ocular tissue occurs when energy is absorbed and transferred to particular molecules. The shorter the wavelength, the higher the potential damage to the tissue. The conjunctiva, the white front surface of the eye, is an area readily damaged by UV and can lead to a type of cancer known as Squamous Cell Carcinomas. There is also strong evidence to support an association between chronic UV exposure and the formation of a pterygium, a benign growth of the conjunctiva. Pterygium (often referred to as ‘surfer’s eye’) has a high incidence between 40 degrees north and 40 degrees south latitudes, an area commonly called the pterygium belt. It is prevalent amongst surfers or individuals who are exposed to high levels of ultraviolet albedo (reflected scattered light), where adequate protection is difficult. The cornea is also vulnerable to UV damage with a significant amount of UVB absorbed by the corneal cells. Up to six to eight hours of exposure reflected off sand in the middle of the day is enough to cause a condition known as photokeratitis. The symptoms of photokeratitis develop several hours after exposure and produce a gritty feeling in the eye, coupled with photophobia and tearing. Higher exposures result in excruciating pain and blepharospasm (involuntary closure of the eyelids). Fortunately the cornea re-establishes itself rapidly, and the symptoms usually abate within two days, leaving no clinically detectable signs.

Exposure to tanning saunas is another common situation that can cause cell damage. Long term exposure to UVR is also a major factor in the formation of cataracts in the crystalline lens through the absorption of both UVA and UVB.

Cumulative Effects of UV

The effect of UV is cumulative over a lifetime and it is estimated that up to 80% of a person’s lifetime exposure is reached before 18 years of age.

Exposure to UV during the Day

It was generally thought that the about 80% of UV radiation occurs between 10am and 2pm, however, a Japanese study found that ocular UV exposure is greatest during early morning and late afternoon in all seasons except winter. In winter, it is at its highest during the middle of the day. It is generally difficult to pinpoint the time of day when exposure is less dangerous and, therefore, the best advice to avoid UV damage to the eye is to wear a wide brimmed hat and good quality wrap-around, well-fitting sunglasses. UV protection is also incorporated in clear and transition spectacle lenses but light will still enter the eye from the sides. For further information on the effective treatment of UV-related eye conditions, contact Peter Bell at Eyes on Anstruther, 80 Anstruther Road, on 9535 5894. 10 Tips

for feeling fit and fabulous

If you have put on a few extra kilos over the cooler months there’s still time to tone up. And the good news is there’s no need to take drastic measures! Just follow these simple tips and you can still look great on the beach this summer! 1. Be aware of what you are putting into your body. Keeping a food diary makes it easy to pinpoint how those extra kilos were added and at what times of the day you slip into bad habits. 2. Eat breakfast to kick start your metabolism. This will also help reduce the cravings for a quick muffin or sugary snack while you are out and about. 3. Plan and prepare snacks in advance. If there is a fruit salad, a smoothie, nuts or carrot sticks readily prepared, it is easier to bypass the biscuit tin. 4. Drink more water. Sometimes thirst can be mistaken for hunger so have a glass of water before choosing to snack. Cut back on calorie-packed alcohol and, of course, give up smoking. 5. Indulge more in food that is especially good for you. Eat blueberries, raspberries and apples for their vitamin C and antioxidants (why not buy frozen fruit and use for smoothies), avocados for vitamin E, oily fish for

omega 3, greens for calcium and potassium, and tomatoes as they can increase energy levels. 6. Whatever you eat, eat it slowly as it takes up to twenty minutes for your brain to register the feeling of being full. Consider how much is on your plate and, if necessary, buy smaller plates if it helps! 7. Include a little of what you fancy every now and then. It’s unrealistic to imagine that you’ll never eat chocolate again. If treats are completely banned, they become all the more desirable and could lead to you falling off the healthy wagon completely. 8. Find time to get active. Schedule it – little and often - into the week. The cheapest and easiest activity is walking. Find a route with a hill and focus on putting energy into every step. Go swimming, cycling, or try something new, such as Pilates. Take a friend along so that you’re less likely to find an excuse not to go. 9. Stress can lead to weight gain through increased appetite, and being stressed doesn’t help the way you look. Block off time in the week to meet up with a friend, take a yoga class, dance to a CD, or book in a massage. 10. And finally, reward yourself with new fitness gear, a pedicure or massage and enjoy your new radiance! 72

Restaurant Review The Brighton Hotel

In this edition of The Mandurah Life, we decided to pay a visit to one of Mandurah’s most popular haunts, The Brighton Hotel on Mandurah Terrace. Located in the heart of Mandurah’s foreshore with fabulous views across Mandjar Bay, The Brighton has always been a favourite of locals and visitors to the area. Featuring a restaurant, bar, entertainment area, function facilities and regular live music and DJ’s, it has always been regarded as the key place in town that caters for all ages and all tastes. Time we tried it out! Lunchtime is always a good occasion to visit the Brighton, particularly when the sun is out. The decked alfresco area offers the perfect spot from which to indulge in the sport of people-watching whilst taking in the views. So arriving for lunch, we took up our seats outside. Give yourself plenty of time to peruse the menu at the Brighton, you’ll need it! The extensive choice includes delicious starters, tasting plates, generous mains and tasty desserts. There is also a special ‘keep it under $15’ Monday to Friday lunch special, offering an excellent choice of dishes. To start with, we chose to share the Mandjar Plate. Priced at a touch under $30, the Plate allows customers to select 4 dishes from a long list of delights. We chose the Salt and Pepper Squid, Grilled Chorizo, Peri Peri Chicken and Tempura Scallops with other tempters including a Soft Shell Crab, Moroccan Lamb Curry Puffs and Feta Stuffed Peppers. Delicious! Next, it was on to the mains and our choices were the Atlantic Salmon and the Wagyu Beef Burger. Topped with lime and coriander calamari, and served with fresh chilli on a garden salad with creamy citrus dressing, this dish proved to be a great choice and one that we would certainly recommend. Next up, the

Wagyu Beef Burger was a real highlight. Served with buffalo mozzarella, chunks of beetroot, caramelised onions, roquette and aioli on a sourdough bun with fries, this will certainly satisfy the most demanding of appetites as well as the more discerning of palates. Other highlights on the menu include an extensive range of handmade pizzas, a 400g Graziers Rib-Eye Steak on the bone (together with plenty of other steak options), pasta dishes and salads. And, if you still have room after all that (which incidentally we didn’t!), you can try the Cake of the Day or the Chocolate Mud Cake to round things off! A thoroughly enjoyable lunch, we promised ourselves we would be back again soon and judging by the amount of tables in use that afternoon, The Brighton continues to attract plenty of repeat customers. glass so you can even mix and match wines with individual dishes, which, incidentally, is exactly what we did!

The Deck Marina Bar and Restaurant

In this edition of The Mandurah Life, we decided to venture a little further afield. Set within the picturesque setting of Port Geographe Marina, Busselton, The Deck Marina Bar and Restaurant offers glorious waterside views and for boat owners it’s just 50 nautical miles south of Mandurah.

So to our lunch and, after ordering a couple of glasses of Watershed Margaret River’s unwooded Chardonnay, we tucked into our first choice of salad, containing cured salmon, green asparagus, grilled scallops and a dill vinaigrette. A light, deliciously fresh dish, the warm scallops and wonderful cured Tasmanian salmon worked perfectly with the dill dressing. If you like your scallops tender and juicy, then don’t miss this! Next, we sampled a Quinoa salad with grilled strips of Black Angus fillet of beef served with an onion and pepper relish. Accompanied by a glass of Tempranillo Shiraz from another Margaret River winery, Hayshed Hill, again this was an excellent choice with the warmed, rare fillet working perfectly with the variety of flavours on offer.

With over 30 years of Michelin hotel and restaurant experience behind them, Hans and Dagma Van Diest are no strangers to pulling together a unique, enticing menu. Having previously wowed members of the Geographe Bay Yacht Club, 6 months ago they made the short hop across town to The Deck, a move that that has given them the opportunity to share their culinary skills with a much wider audience. The result is an inspiring, European-influenced, modern Australian menu that specialises in an array of fresh seafood dishes.

If you haven’t visited The Deck before, we can assure you are in for a treat. Whether it’s for lunch or dinner, with or without the kids, there’s plenty of treats for all tastes. For the adventurous, you can even try the ‘Trust the Chef’ option! For a cost of $45, the team will cook up a surprise 3-course meal based on your own personal preferences. We must try that next time!

Arriving for lunch on a glorious spring day, we decided to order from the special lunch menu that now includes a summer salad lunch special with all dishes at $20 or under. The restaurant also operates its main menu throughout the day so if you are looking for something more substantial at lunchtime, the choice is endless. As well as a fabulous selection of starters, including oysters, a variety of prawn dishes and the popular Deck Antipasto tasting plate, mains include a Fresh Fish of the Day, Zarzuela de Pescado, a traditional Spanish seafood stew, Porcini Mushroom Risotto and a premium cut Scotch Fillet Steak amongst other delights.

Open Tues to Sat 11am til late, Sun 11am to 10pm 21 Spinnaker Boulevard, Port Geographe Marina Fully Licensed Tel 9751 2960 Bookings essential www.thedeckmarina.com.au

For wine connoisseurs, The Deck will also appeal. The wine list is cleverly listed by grape varieties so if you know what you like, it’s easy to find. There is also an impressive choice of wines by the 76

Summer Recipe

Cheesy Pumpkin Pie

This is the sort of recipe that is divine straight from the oven or once it’s cooled down and sliced up ready for a picnic. Pumpkin is perfectly in season right now and is low in calories and high in dietary fibre, minerals and vitamins – especially Vitamin A. The recipe can also be easily adapted for another time by adding 100g of pancetta, swapping the fetta for Gruyère or blue cheese, or swapping the caramelised onion for chopped spring onions.

Ingredients 700g butternut pumpkin, chopped into small cubes can of oil spray 150ml olive oil 1 red onion, finely chopped 1 tbsp honey 100g small broccoli florets

6 eggs 75g self-raising flour 125g cheddar cheese, grated 250g fetta cheese, crumbled Salt and pepper

Method Preheat the oven to 200˚C, or 180˚C if fanforced. Grease a spring-form tin (approximately 25cm), then line with baking paper. Place pumpkin onto an oven tray lined with aluminium foil. Spray with the oil, season with salt and pepper and toss to coat pumpkin. Put in oven for 25 minutes or until pumpkin is tender. Reduce oven heat by 20˚C. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes or until they soften and caramelise. Add the honey when they start to turn golden brown. Remove from heat. Add the broccoli florets and roasted pumpkin chunks to the caramelised onions and gently toss together. In a large bowl, beat the eggs then add the rest of the olive oil. Whisk in the flour and then stir in the cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon the pumpkin mixture on to the base of the spring-form pan. Pour over the egg mixture. Bake for 45 minutes or until the pie turns golden and is firm in the centre. Serve right away or cold with a leafy green salad, zingy lemon dressing and toasted walnuts.

Get Green and Clean How to embrace a fresh and active lifestyle this summer

the more concentrated food groups, a quick sandwich, pastry or cake to complement that cup of coffee. Incorporating more greens into an eating regime doesn’t have to be difficult. Try considering green smoothies, vegetable wraps and creative salads with high protein and gluten free grains, such as quinoa (keenwah) or millet. Starting the day with some greens will help the body feel energized and give it a big boost of alkalizing minerals, oxygen and enzymes. Green smoothies are not all about drinking spinach! This will give the digestive system a well-earned rest, allowing the liver to have a reduced work load for the day. The optimum eating plan is to aim for an 80% alkaline food diet (fruits, vegetables, alkaline grains and nuts) and to combine this with 20% acid foods, which are mainly protein based products and grains. For convenience in our busy lives, it is often easier to grab foods from
