Autumn Fashion A cool change!

Stephanie Says…

The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert... especially striking with lace, floral or leather outfits. Let’s not forget the men! For the guys, this season is filled with not only the usual greys, but also shades of blue, including wonderful teal, and dark red, such as claret. These are rich opulent colours and are perfect for shirts, pants or jackets. The baseball jacket is also a popular autumn piece this year and comes in slimline combinations of textures, such as leather, suede and tweed panelling. Prints for men include paisley and for the adventurous man out there, there are luxurious and silky, paisley jackets for evening wear. For men’s footwear, hiking boots are all the rage and can be teamed with casual as well as smarter pants. It’s a trend that’s set to last right through to winter too.

With summer easing into autumn, now is the perfect time for rethinking and restocking the wardrobe. Especially as this exciting new season brings with it clean silhouettes, fabulous feminine detail and amazing textures and prints. A printed skinny pant should be at the top of the shopping list. As well as jeggings, there are plenty of tailored options in floral, graphic and abstract and, with the fabric skimming rather than hugging legs, finding a pair to suit should be a breeze. A textured fabric, such as jacquard, lace, metallic or leather will add edginess to the look and why not add a simple top, tucked in, such as a loose tee or camisole. Leather itself is always a reliable go-to in the form of a jacket once we head into the cooler months but this autumn, leather has no limits! Further to the ubiquitous leather jacket, there are leather pants, tops, skirts and dresses. Lines are strong and purposeful but still retain femininity with ruffles, curves and clever tailoring. Designers have also come up with fabulous creations that mix leather with other textures, such as lace and gorgeous sheer fabrics, and this really makes dresses standout pieces. Still reigning in the fashion world is the peplum jacket, top and dress, in a myriad of dazzling prints. But new for autumn are peplum tops and dresses in beautiful lace with cap sleeves and simple necklines that are quite stunning, especially in strong blues or black, and teamed with nude heels. For the feet this season, pointy high heels are perfect, or opt for a pair of ankle boots with studs as this will add a little autumn attitude. Studded belts, bags, shoes and cuffs are must-have accessories and are

Ways To Add Value To Your Home …without breaking the bank!

2. Upgrade or clean flooring

Attending to dirty carpets and scratched wooden flooring makes a home seem bigger, brighter and much more appealing. For carpet stains, try steam cleaning, wash and wax for laminates, and for wooden floors, sand them back and apply fresh coats of varnish.

Our home is our biggest investment and adding value doesn’t have to cost the earth. So whether you are looking to increase the value of your property or simply looking to improve your quality of life, here are 10 great, affordable ways to achieve those renovation goals.

3. Paint throughout

Never underestimate how much value can be added to your home with a fresh coat of paint to either the interior or exterior. A good paint job is not only relatively cheap but it’s also the easiest way to inject new life into dull, lifeless rooms. Choose neutral colours to maximise appeal and if you can’t afford a professional painter to do the whole house, employ someone to paint just the entrance and living areas to maximise first impressions.

1. Give the kitchen and bathrooms a makeover

The old adage that kitchens and bathrooms sell homes applies more than ever today. As the most important room in the house, a renovated kitchen is a sure fire bet for adding value to the home and renovations don’t have to break the budget. A lick of paint or new handles on existing cabinet doors can work wonders. Of course, if there is a bit more money in the pot, adding stone bench tops can be a real winner and with a variety of composite stone tops now on the market you might be surprised at how affordable some can be. In the bathroom, try applying fresh sealant around wet areas, replace old towel rails and toilet roll holders, replace old shower heads and clean grouting. Again, stone vanity tops can create a real wow factor.

4. Clean from top to toe

How long is it since you gave your home a really good clean? Start from the highest point and work down, cleaning all work surfaces and in particular window dressings. Take down your blinds before cleaning, send your curtains to the drycleaners and clean out cupboards. You will have to move furniture out of rooms but the results will be worth it. ... cont. pg 34 32

5. Improve lighting

looking its best for passers-by. Sand down and varnish wooden front doors or add some paint, repair ripped flyscreens and install brand new light fittings. A shiny new house number, swish new mailbox and new plant pot or water feature will add that finishing touch.

There’s nothing worse than a dark and dingy interior and by adding either more natural light or attractive artificial lighting your home can be transformed. Think about installing a skylight or an extra window in dark areas of the home or install the latest energy efficient LED lights to give the house a more contemporary look.

9. Render the outside brickwork

We are all guilty of hanging on to too many unnecessary items. A cluttered home is not only untidy but also appears much smaller. Have a garage sale, rent a storage unit, or start making trips to the landfill and whittle down your home’s contents to a manageable size.

If your home is starting to show its age on the outside, chances are it could be because of out-dated exposed brickwork. Rendering the brickwork to a home can be expensive, particularly on 2 storey homes where scaffolding costs come into play but the results can be stunning. It may cost a few thousand dollars but the returns could far outweigh the costs.

7. Open up the home

10. Landscape the gardens

6. De-clutter and add space

An unkempt garden can block out light, obscure views and dramatically reduce curb appeal. As one of the lowest cost, highest return makeovers in which you can invest, a beautifully landscaped garden is a great investment. If there’s money in the budget, it may even pay to have a designer come up with a garden and planting scheme that makes the most of the layout and proportions of the house. And, while you are about it, make sure that driveways and paving around the home are regularly jet washed.

Open plan living is all the rage and today’s homes are all about larger rooms and less of them. Knocking out non-structural walls is a great value-add to make a home appear larger than it really is. You can open up the kitchen to the living room or the lounge to the backyard relatively inexpensively. Bi-fold doors leading out from the living area to a sheltered outdoor area can also create more usable living space.

8. Give the front entrance a makeover

First impressions can make all the difference so always ensure the front of your home is 34

Air-Conditioning

home & garden

Available now at Ford & Doonan, Mandurah, iZone by Airstream is a stylish and intuitive touch screen air management system designed to offer an easy-to-operate, energy efficient air flow solution for the home. Through the use of an elegant colour touch screen, based on smartphone and tablet technology, iZone monitors and manages the precise amount of air in every room and gives complete control over individual zones around the home. Compatible with all major air-conditioning brands, the system works intuitively with leading Ford & Doonan brands Daikin and Panasonic. The system can also be retro-fitted to homes at a cost of around $2000 but is much cheaper to install if fitted during the build process. The latest technology available from Airstream also includes a smartphone app allowing control of your air-conditioning system through your smartphone or tablet whether in or away from the home. For further information on iZone technology, contact Ford and Doonan Mandurah on 9581 6888 or visit their showroom at Unit 2, 64 Reserve Drive.

Technology For The Home Home Automation

Imagine a home automation system that locks and unlocks your house, switches heating and cooling appliances on and off when you are out, opens and closes curtains and blinds, controls your home theatre system with the touch of a button and even lets you know when the kids have returned from school! Incredibly simple to use, Control 4 is the most sophisticated home automation system on the market and allows the control of electronic devices, appliances or systems in the home through just one remote control. Use a smart phone, tablet or laptop to operate the system and you can even download a special app developed for iPhones, iPads and the Android market. The benefits are endless for both homeowners and business owners alike with significant cost savings possible on energy bills through the automation of lighting, temperature and energy systems. However, where Control 4 offers a real advantage over similar systems already in the market is that this is a system that can be retro-fitted into the home. Unlike other products that require their home automation systems to be installed during the construction of the home, Control 4 can be easily installed into an existing home. This not only means it offers far greater flexibility with installation, it also means the system is considerably cheaper than similar available products. Plus, by purchasing an entry level single-room system you can also test out the technology before deciding whether you wish to automate the whole home. Theatre packages start from as little as $2500, and the system is also portable i.e. move home and it can come with you! The Control 4 home automation system is available through exclusive local distributor Mediatek, located at 1/81 Gordon Road. Call Mitch King on 9534 7349 for more information.

This innovative design minimises friction, reducing the power required to raise or lower the shade, thereby enabling batteries to last for up to five years – an industry first. Jean Seiffert of Luxaflex Mandurah explains, “Unlike conventional motorised blinds, roller blinds with Omotion Technology are smooth and remarkably quiet in operation. They also offer multiple control options and are compatible with a range of automation systems. 36

The design involves the use of regular D cell alkaline batteries, discreetly hidden in the roller tube, which are incredibly easy to replace. The blinds are also cordless, ensuring they are child and pet safe. Luxury Kitchens

Kitchens Thinking of renovating your kitchen? Thinking of installing stone bench tops? It seems our love of stone bench tops in the kitchen continues to grow and, as well as the quality finish they provide, they can also have a considerable impact on the resale value of a home. For those operating on a strict budget, the good news is that stone bench tops have now become much more of an affordable luxury in the home. With a much wider choice now available on the market, many new brands are offering a range of high quality stone finishes that won’t break the bank. Reconstituted stone surfaces are a smart and modern alternative to products such as marble and granite for not only kitchen bench tops and splashbacks but also for bathroom vanities and wall linings. Products, such as Caesarstone and Qstone, offer a contemporary approach to kitchen design whilst still maintaining the required quality, look and finish. These reconstituted stone products offer non-staining, scratch resistant and heat resistant surfaces in a wide range of colours and finishes. Affordability is also paramount with an average-sized kitchen now costing around $6K to have stone bench tops fitted, down from around $10K a few years ago. Looking for further information? Merlin Cabinets specialise in the provision of high quality luxury kitchens as well as undertaking kitchen renovations. They can also provide a wide range of reconstituted or natural stone finishes to suit all budgets. Call them on 9584 2822 or visit their showroom at Unit 3, 14 Thornborough Road.

Design For The Home Flooring An innovative new carpet embracing the latest in carpet technology is now available from Choices. Brease® has been specifically developed to be both asthma and allergy friendly and is the only broadloom carpet currently recognised by the National Asthma Council’s Australia Sensitive Choice Program. Offering a 15 year guarantee, Brease® features a reinforced backing made from numerous layers of synthetic fibres which prevents the growth of bacteria, mould, mildew and fungi. Providing market-leading insulation, comfort and noise reduction, Brease® also contains a self-renewing, odour destroying treatment that reduces common odours and improves air quality. Plus, a protective layer on the fibre means the carpet can withstand normal household spills and accidents by cleverly repelling the spills, thereby making clearing up

a whole lot easier. The latest technology employed also helps to ensure that Brease® carpets retain their colour vibrancy and appearance over longer periods as a result of the yarn being coloured all the way through. The technology locks the carpet colour in, right through to the fibre, to protect against fading, making it particularly ideal for sun-filled rooms. Thicker and softer to touch, Brease® carpets are also treated with an advanced anti-static agent during the manufacturing process to deliver outstanding and long lasting resistance to static. A lifetime anti-static guarantee is also offered. For further information on the Brease® range of carpets from Choices, visit Choices Flooring by Vogue at 60 Pinjarra Road, or call 9535 5660. 38

Mercedes-Benz A-Class All new premium hatch arrives down under!

It was in 1997 that Mercedes-Benz unveiled the first incarnation of its mini MPV, the A-Class, to a highly expectant public. As the first ever small, front-wheel drive vehicle from Mercedes-Benz, it represented a huge step down in size for the luxury car manufacturer as well as revealing a new, unexpected upright look. Fifteen years, however, is a long time in motoring and although the original A-Class oozed innovation and sold over 1.6 million units worldwide, buyers’ tastes have since changed. Recognising that the mini MPV market has been superseded by a hotly contested premium hatch market, the all-new 2013 A-Class Mercedes-Benz is now a vastly different animal to its predecessor. In fact, other than its name, this new, exciting entry-level Mercedes shares little in common with its forerunner. Visually, it’s a completely different car. Now measuring in at around 4.3 metres, the new A-class has added 409mm in length and around 131mm to its wheelbase. Its newfound cool, more youthful looks are also enhanced by its more low-slung design. Longer, wider and lower, the A-Class has been transformed into a sleek, sporty, fashionable package. The more modern, contemporary feel also flows through to the interior with a selection of clever design touches. These include subtle carbon-style inserts on the dashboard and doors and swivelling tri-air vents as featured in the SLS AMG. The extra length and width also translate into more interior space and a bigger boot. Power-wise, the new A-Class gives a choice of both diesel and petrol four-cylinder engines, starting with a 90kW 1.6 litre petrol engine, which claims 5.8L per 100km. Other petrol options include the A200 BlueEFFICIENCY and the top of the range A250 Sport, which is powered by a 155kW 2.0 litre unit capable of achieving 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. The diesel option is the A 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, which offers impressive fuel efficiency at 4.6L per 100km. All engines also feature the ECO Start/ Stop function ensuring that the engine is temporarily switched off in stationary traffic. 40

motoring As you would expect, the new A-Class is also packed with an array of safety features as standard. As well as parking sensors, a reversing camera and an auto reverse-park system, equipment also includes nine airbags, ABS, ESC and Collision Prevention Assist. This automatically stops the car if it detects a collision at less than 30km/h. Add in Bluetooth, iPod and USB compatibility

and a choice of either Comfort or Sports suspension systems, and it’s clear MercedesBenz have left few stones unturned in making the all new model an extremely desirable package. Expect the reborn A-Class to heat up the premium hot hatch market even further. For further information on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class or to arrange a test drive, contact Southpoint Star on 9586 5388.

Volkswagen Golf 7 The world’s most popular

expectations understandably high, what can we expect from the latest version of the world’s favourite hatchback? Well, firstly, it’s bigger. The latest Golf has added 56mm to its length and 28mm to its width, and this translates into more space in the cabin and more storage space in the boot – up by 30 litres to 380 litres. However, although bigger, the new Golf actually weighs in some 100kg lighter through a greater use of aluminium and some revised production processes. This reduced weight, coupled with increased aerodynamics, means VW is claiming an impressive average fuel reduction of 13.9 per cent across the model range. The new Golf 7 is also the safest Golf ever built. There’s a whole host of innovative safety features on offer, including a lane-keeping system, fatigue detection, adaptive cruise control, light assist and emergency breaking. It’s a list of features normally seen solely on luxury cars but on the Golf 7 they are standard. And, on the subject of luxury, various luxurious touches are to be found pretty much

small car returns!

It was in 1974 that Volkswagen faced the daunting task of launching the follow up to the world’s most popular car ever built – the VW Beetle. Almost 40 years on, and the iconic VW Golf is now not only Volkswagen’s most successful ever car (around 30 million models sold worldwide to date) but it is also the world’s second biggest selling car of all time. Pretty impressive stats but these figures only tell part of the story. In the face of rising petrol prices in the early 1970’s, the Golf, quite simply, made small, fuel-efficient cars cool and with the GTI it arguably redefined modern motoring. This high performance model single-handedly created the ‘hot hatch’ market, which in turn spawned a whole host of imitators. First seen at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, the all new seventh-generation Golf, referred to as the Golf 7, arrives down under in 2013. With

motoring everywhere on the Golf 7. None more so than in the case of the interior, which features a sweeping centre console, beautifully designed instrument panel and sleek length and height-adjustable centre armrest. Initially in Australia, engine options will comprise of a 1.4 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, available with 90kW and 103kW power outputs and a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions. The range will also include an 110kW 2.0 litre turbo-diesel available with a six-speed dual-clutch auto. Expect further variants to be released later this year, including the all new Golf GTI and the replacement for the all-wheel-drive Golf R sports flagship is also expected within the next 12 months. Bigger, lighter, quieter and more luxurious than ever, the all new Golf 7 once again raises the bar in the ever competitive premium hatchback market. Its popularity seems set to continue to soar. BMW X3 Award-winning luxury SUV

now with added value!

Celebrating ten years of production later this year, the BMW X3 has recently announced a significant upgrade to the standard specification of its second generation model. This specification upgrade, available from April 2013 production, will add an additional value of over $8,000 to some models in the range with a number of extra features originally on the options list now standard at no extra cost.

For the entry level models, the X3 xDrive20i and the X3 xDrive20d, the already impressive list of standard features now includes electric seats with memory function, Business Navigation system, Automatic Tailgate function and an upgrade to 18 alloy wheels. These additional extras complement the existing standard features that include rear view camera, front and rear Park Distance Control, cruise control with braking function,

motoring an interior mirror with anti-dazzle, Bluetooth functionality and BMW radio with USB interface. For the top of the range petrol and diesel models, the X3 xDrive28i and X3 xDrive30d, there is also a number of additional features now standard, again for no extra cost. Automatic Tailgate function (already standard on X3 xDrive30d) is now included together with Professional Navigation, smartphone connectivity (including extended Bluetooth functionality and voice control), an exterior mirror package (which includes an anti-dazzle and folding function), Bi-Xenon headlights, Top View lumbar support and 18” Y-spoke alloy wheels.

Commenting on the upgrade, BMW Group Australia Managing Director Phil Horton said the BMW X3 sits in the “sweet-spot of desirability” for Australian customers. “Over two model generations, the BMW X3 has been a runaway success in Australia, blending spacious practicality, premium styling and BMW’s hallmark driving characteristics. The specification now standard in a BMW X3 means customers considering a premium mid-sized SAV can get outstanding value on the car that is considered best-in-class in Australia right now,” he said. Current Australian pricing on the BMW X3 remains as follows - X3 xDrive20i $59,000, X3 xDrive20d $63,100, X3 xDrive28i $73,000 and X3 xDrive30d $76,500. These prices include GST and Luxury Car Tax (LCT) but exclude dealer charges, stamp duty, statutory charges and on-road charges, which vary between dealers and states or territories. Isuzu Legendary Japanese brand

Australia are just some of the countries that have been taking delivery of Isuzu Utes over the last 40 years. Determined to build on the company’s success in overseas markets, and in particular the burgeoning Australian market, Isuzu have recently unveiled the all new Isuzu D-Max. With sharpened exterior styling, increased performance levels and further improvements made on its already renowned fuel economy, the 2013 D-Max is coming hard at the competition. Powered by a highly refined 3.0-litre turbo diesel common rail engine with five-speed ‘Rev-Tronic’ automatic transmission, this fuel-injected, Euro4-compliant unit generates an impressive 130Kw of power and 380Nm at 1800rpm. The D-Max is also available with a 5-speed manual transmission option with a revised gear-lever pivot point designed to give a sportier feel when changing gears. As the only Ute produced by a commercial vehicle manufacturer and coming from a line of rugged, reliable workhorses, the all new Isuzu D-Max is understandably extremely tough. With its superior stability and exceptional road holding this is one Ute that is definitely built to last. Add to that all the technologies and modern conveniences expected in a modern car including cruise control, air-con, audio system with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity and remote keyless entry, the all new Isuzu D-Max is set to make some serious waves down under! For more information on the all-new Isuzu D-Max, contact Barbagallo Mandurah on 9587 9999 or visit their showroom at 140 Pinjarra Road.

Founded in 1916, with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, Isuzu Motors is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles and heavy trucks boasting a long and proud history of excellence. The company is also renowned for its production of diesel engines, of which some 20 million have been produced to date, with many of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers, including Renault, Nissan and General Motors, counted amongst its customers. The company’s alliance with General Motors began back in the early 1970’s when the Chevrolet LUV became the first Isuzu-built vehicle to be sold in the United States. This began a new era for Isuzu as the company made its first move move into passenger car production and today it’s the Isuzu D-Max where efforts are currently being focused. The origins of this tough, stylish Ute can be traced back to the launch of the Isuzu Wasp in the early 1960’s. With the intention of building a car that looked like a passenger car but functioned like a truck, its success meant thousands of Isuzu Utes have now been exported worldwide. Talking Property The Northern Beach Suburbs of Mandurah If you are looking for an appealing and affordable beachside lifestyle in Mandurah, then why not investigate the stunning northern beach suburbs? You might be surprised at the wide choice of properties on offer. The Silver Sands Estate was established in 1989 and today the name applies to the entire surrounding area that includes a beautiful 3km beachfront strip and the original town. Here the older-style holiday homes can still be found amongst the newly developed townhouses and apartments and the interesting mix of block sizes, between 800 to 1000sqm, offer development opportunities. Prices range from $350,000 for a 2 bedroom villa to $450,000 for a 3 bed older home, and are determined very much according to location, views and beach access. At the southern end of Silver Sands Ocean Beach, discover the Mandurah Ocean Marina where there is a huge range of 2 and 3 bed apartments and townhouses. Prices here start at around $500,000, rising up to as much as $3.8m for a fabulous 2 storey luxury penthouse with spectacular 360 degree town, hill and ocean views. The Watersun Estate, established in the early 1990’s, is north of Silver Sands and is known locally as New San Remo. This area offers 500 to 800sqm blocks with a range of upmarket properties, featuring lush, well-kept gardens and is one of the few suburbs with homes backing directly on to the sand dunes. At the peak of the market, some of these homes were selling for more than $2m and today, it is occasionally possible to find an ocean block for $800,000. Here, pristine 4 or 5 bedroom family homes start at around $450,000. This ocean-side lifestyle is a short drive from the town centre, close to local schools, shopping

and Meadow Springs Golf Club. A short bike ride takes you to the marina for a relaxing breakfast. Old San Remo is the next stop north with its mixture of old-style holiday homes and brand new grand homes on block sizes of 800 to 1000sqm. This is personal favourite of mine and has become quite forgotten. Featuring street names like Selene, Minos, Pallas and Orestes, named after Greek gods, there is a definite European coastal feel. Throw a line on the beach and catch herring and whiting or try swimming, kayaking or canoeing. Offering fantastic ocean views, on a clear day, Rottnest Island is visible from the hilltop properties. This is a safe and friendly neighbourhood with parks, a viewing spot over the entire area and a local surf lifesaving club. New Madora Bay recently filled the gap between Old San Remo and Old Madora Bay with block sizes ranging from 600 to 750sqm located in tidy streets all within 300 metres of the beach. These homes are mostly modern and stylish, over 250sqm in size, with landscaped gardens, pools and reverse cycle air-conditioning, and are built with modern family life in mind. North is the older section of Madora Bay Estate established in 1960.The original name of Madora was derived from two separate places, Chadora, a grain mill and railway siding near Dwellingup, and Mandora, a cattle station between Broom and Port Hedland. The name was amended to Madora Bay in 2003. A popular holiday spot, the area features a general store and a local tavern in front of a delightful beachfront park. Photography With Kelly Doye

At this time of year, it is still warm enough at, and just after, dusk to spend time outdoors taking some night shots. So grab your camera, tripod and your creativity and have a night out with a difference! A tripod is paramount to your success! A torch and a remote shutter are also really handy.

Bridge image

Night photography doesn’t just have to be photos of buildings, lights and reflections. You can also try your hand at photographing moving or lit objects or a combination of the two. Moving cars or boat lights on the water create nice streams of coloured light within a photo, which add to the interest of the composition. You will need to use the bulb (B) mode if you want an exposure over 30 seconds and you will need to time this yourself so a watch is handy. Use a remote shutter release if you have one. Simply pressing the shutter release can be enough to blur a photo if you are not careful. Use a strong tripod (unless you intentionally want to paint light by moving the camera) as it is important to ensure the camera is stable during a timed exposure. Any slight drift in the tripod head will blur the timed exposures and will prevent sharp images.

part of the photo of most interest and set the f-stop accordingly. The higher the f-stop, the better the range of focus throughout the photo, so an f-stop of 2.8 won’t give very pleasing results when shooting a building in the distance. Instead, try f22 but be aware that exposure times will be longer. Exposure will also be dependent on ambient and reflected light.

Fireworks image

Fireworks can be a fun challenge, however, you will need to experiment with exposure times. This photo was taken with an exposure of about 8 seconds at f22 @400ASA, to give a nice colour saturation and show a bit of light movement. Try bracketing exposures (e.g. 3, 5, 7 and 9 second exposures) to determine what best suits the required effect. Firework light is quite intense and the colour

art & photography drops out if you overexpose the shot. Digital cameras are fantastic for this type of photography as you can immediately gauge which way the exposure should be adjusted.

Ruby’s image

Camera painting works on the same principals as other night photography. Take the camera off the tripod and move it around while you expose the shot. This will create soft colourful abstract photographs. Changing exposure times will give varying results too. Long

exposures in low light situations allow for the ambient light to filter onto the camera sensor. For example, in areas where there is little or no light (e.g. moonlight) an exposure of f5.6 at 4 seconds at 12800ASA is the same as f 5.6 at 4 minutes @ 200ASA. The higher the ASA you use, the more noise you will have in your photo and in turn this gives the image less clarity.

Golf Tips With Craig Tapp

Hi everyone, I hope you are all playing well and enjoying your golf! For me, the next few months are exciting times for keen golfers. March, April and May are the best months to play golf in the Peel Region with the courses now lush after a hot summer and mornings and evenings becoming cooler. The green keepers can now cut the greens a little shorter so the putts will run a little smoother and truer, and the wind also drops off making it easier conditions for golf. So now we have the perfect conditions, how do we get our scores lower? Good putting! That’s the key to good golf. Remarkably, very few players practise their putting. I hang around the putting green and driving ranges all day and everyone will tell you their thoughts on their new swing but very few players have any thoughts about putting. Well, here are a few thoughts for your putting that will help you putt better, lower your scores and put a smile on your face.

ball finding the bottom of the cup. Putts running slower or faster than this will not drop as often. So when practising, simply put a tee 18 inches behind the hole and putt to the tee.

Putter path

As putting is a side-on game, our putting stroke should be like a mini golf swing. The putter should work in a small arc going back and forth, not straight back and straight through as many players have been taught over the years. This is why the belly putter has been so popular and successful with the butt end anchored to the body, the putter head swings in a perfect arc.

Grips

Watching golf on TV, you will see many types of putters and grips. We have cross handed, claw grips, split handed forearm grips, long putters, belly putters, and extra short putters all working for different people. From a coaching perspective, I don’t mind what your style is as long as we go back to the rolling the ball thought. If the ball is rolling correctly, we have found the most effective style for you. Hope to see you on the range or putting green soon. Cheers

Rolling the ball

Very few players understand or even think about how the ball rolls. This is the key to holing putts. A simple way to check your roll is to draw a line around a ball put it down on the green, aim your putter face square to the line and putt. If you see one striped line the ball is rolling correctly if you see two lines or a blur you know the ball is running incorrectly. A correct rolling path will hold its line for longer and more importantly, if the ball hits the hole, there is a greater chance of the ball diving into the cup rather than lipping out.

Holing speed

Many tests over the years have told us that the perfect holing speed of a putt is a putt that would finish 18 inches past the hole if missed. This statically gives you the most chance of the 60

Introducing…

The Skin Remodeling System ™

Reverse the ageing process with the revolutionary new skin rejuvenation treatment! As the most visible part of the body, our face is also the area of our body that often looks the oldest first. The ageing of the face is, of course, a process that occurs naturally but it is also heavily influenced by the lifestyle choices we make. Factors such as diet, our environment, the chemicals we use on our skin, whether we moisturise and whether we drink or smoke will all influence this process. The good news is that, thanks to a revolutionary new skin rejuvenation treatment, much of this ageing process can now be treated and, in many cases, reversed. The Skin Remodeling System ™ is a noninvasive, totally natural way of stimulating collagen growth in the deeper skin layers. By replacing aged and sun-damaged collagen, the skin regains its plumpness, leading to the smoothing of wrinkles and the tightening of skin and muscles. So how does it work? Well, in short, the treatment works by treating skin problems at source. Waves of energy from a handheld treatment head gently vibrate and heat collagen fibres, stimulating new collagen growth. The effect tightens and rejuvenates the skin in the treated area. Simultaneously,

therapeutic currents are transferred to the deeper layers of the skin repairing muscle tissue and restoring muscle tone. The result is a promotion of cell renewal and the growth of new healthy skin, a restoring of elasticity to the skin and the erasing of lines in the areas of facial expression, such as crow’s feet, worry lines and lip wrinkles. Muscle tone is also restored, redefining facial contours, lifting cheeks and tightening the jawline and neck. Finally, a youthful smoothness and tautness to the skin is also restored. More good news is that results are immediate. A tighter and improved skin texture will be apparent after the very first treatment although it will, depending on the individual, generally take up to 4 to 6 weeks to allow the natural process of the skin’s collagen renewal to take effect. The Skin Remodeling System™ is now available in Mandurah at Total Skin and Body Centre Day Spa. A total of 12 treatments is recommended over a course of 6 weeks and each treatment costs $90. Book all 12 and receive 2 free. For further information, call 9535 4530 or visit them at Unit 2/2A, Peel Street (next to the Atrium Hotel). 62

Dr Harvey’s Clinic Part 1

The Face – Keep it real! When someone walks into a room we automatically form an opinion on that person without getting to know them on a deeper level. Superficial, yes, but true. There are a number of factors that determine this opinion and the face as a whole, including symmetry, proportionality and shape, is a major influence. This macroscopic analysis (analysis of the larger features) is an important part in the assessment made by a cosmetic surgeon on patients. A detailed assessment involves dividing the face into 3 roughly equal parts and then measuring for symmetry and balance. An assessment is then made of the smaller features such as lips, eyebrows, nose and ears. A microscopic analysis involves an assessment of the fine-print features of the face. These are the most common concerns of most patients who seek surgery, with minor superficial lines around the eyes, lips and lower cheeks of most concern. These areas can be easily addressed but a focus on the larger picture is likely to have a more positive overall effect to the look of the face. Of course, many facial issues are age related. Over time, our faces change through a combination of general ageing, sun exposure, lifestyle choices (such as smoking and drinking), genetics and illness. The most common change is a loss of volume which is predominantly caused by a loss of fat. Muscle and bone changes also occur but mostly to a lesser extent. The skin of the face is the

envelope which holds the contents of the face in place and as the contents reduce in volume, the face displays excess skin. This excess skin heading south together with a loss of collagen also adds to a loss of elasticity. At my clinics, we try and reverse the effects of ageing and enhance the look of a face through a combination of different proven treatments. A re-volumisation of cheeks, jawline and lips helps to re-establish the harmony of the face. Volumising fillers, wrinkle relaxers and collagen stimulators also have an important part to play as do surface skin treatments such as IPL and laser and chemical peels. However, we believe that more extreme treatments and augmentations can give the face a less natural look. We see too many exaggerated lips, cheeks and breasts that border on the ridiculous. Lips, cheeks and chins need to be kept in proportion to the rest of the face. There is nothing wrong with fuller, more sensual lips, but it’s important to keep it real! Dr Harvey Sacks is dedicated to the advancement and teaching of best practice cosmetic medicine. A joint founder of the cosmetics Physicians Society of Australasia, he is a former executive member of the board of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery. Autumn Nail Art Beautiful nail art is currently a big beauty trend and can add as much impact to an outfit as a statement bag or pair of shoes. Runways around the world have been showcasing polish fashion and here are some ideas for fabulous autumn nails. The edit on colours is for glorious, deep red wine shades; blues, such as royal and navy; nudes that are buttery, caramel or taupe; and greys that have a blue undertone. Nudes and greys are perfect for showcasing jewellery and particularly, of course, rings. Darker nails tend to resurface in the cooler months and there is a call for black and graphite polish in matte as well as high shine. Striking effects include adding metallic swirls or embellishments, such as a crystal. However, because WA tends to have mild autumns, black may seem a little heavy. So perhaps save it until winter or book in for a one off manicure for a special night out. Choosing a different polish for the tip of the

nail opens up so many colour and design options. It is a modern take on the classic French manicure. What’s set to be on trend this season is to have a dark nail colour, such as a deep red wine, navy blue or graphite with a metallic or glittery tip. Bare nails can be equally as attractive with a painted tip or with just a flick of colour across the tip. Painting a design on each individual nail has been around for a while and this autumn, the inspiration is urban graffiti, resulting in dizzying zig-zags in bright lines of colour. Being ever so popular right now in fashion, lace is also expected to feature as a special texture effect on nails. There are many amazing effects that can be added after a base coat, such as diamond dust, gold leaf, gemstones and even tiny beads that can be ‘rolled’ on to each nail before it has dried. 66

health & beauty

Make sure that you take time to commit to a regular beauty regime for your hands so that you can indulge in countless new looks throughout the autumn months. Start by filing a nail shape that suits your fingers by following the natural curve of your cuticle.

Add hand cream and soak your hands in warm water for a few minutes. Gently massage back cuticles with a drop of cuticle oil and then wipe nails with polish remover. Now your nails are ready for their autumn art!

Eyecare With Elite Eyewear

Understanding Macular Degeneration Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in Australia, affecting one person in 3 over the age of 80. One in 7 over the age of 50 also shows some evidence of the disease. The condition is caused by the degeneration of an area of the retina known as the macula. This in turn seriously affects the central vision making everyday activities like driving and reading extremely difficult. However, although there is no cure, there is a range of treatment options that can slow down its progression, depending on the stage and type of the disease. The earlier the disease is detected, the more vision is likely to be retained. Two forms of the condition exist, dry macular degeneration and wet macular degeneration. The dry version tends to occur through the ageing and subsequent thinning of the macular with yellow deposits of hyaline material called drusen forming. About 1 in 10 people with dry macular degeneration go onto develop the wet form in which new blood vessels grow beneath the retina. In these cases, the loss of vision can be quite severe as these blood vessels can haemorrhage into the macula. The early stages of MD have no apparent symptoms although early signs can be detected by a visit to an optometrist. More advanced symptoms can include a slight loss of vision, a sight distortion where straight lines

appear wavy or bent, problems distinguishing faces or dark patches or empty spaces appearing in the centre of the vision. The need for improved lighting, a sensitivity to glare, worsening night vision and poor colour sensitivity may also indicate a problem. With no proven treatment for the dry form of the disease, there are some available treatments that prevent the growth of new blood cells across the macular. However, in addition to a regular check-up with your optometrist, there is a number of ways of reducing the risk of MD. Quitting smoking will drastically reduce the risks. Smoking triples the risk of developing MD with smokers on average suffering from MD 10 years earlier than non-smokers. In addition to this, regular exercise and the correct diet will also help. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, limit fats and oils, and eat fish two to three times a week. A handful of nuts per week is also recommended. Finally, taking zinc and antioxidants, including vitamins C and E can slow the rate of progress of intermediate or advanced-stage disease by up to 25 per cent. Consult your optometrist about taking these supplements. The above information was supplied by Elite Eyewear, suppliers of personal eye care and eyewear for the Peel Region. Visit them in Pinjarra at Shop 12B, Pinjarra Junction or at 7/6 Baroy Street, Falcon. 68

Restaurant ReviewYogi Contemporary

Indian Restaurant

A recent new addition to the Mandurah eating out scene, Yogi Contemporary Indian Restaurant has already been receiving plenty of positive reviews from curry lovers around town. So being partial to the odd curry, we at The Mandurah Life thought it was high time we checked it out! They say first impressions count, well, if that’s the case, Yogi will certainly leave plenty of lasting ones. On entering the restaurant, the modern, tasteful décor provides a highly impressive backdrop to the comfortable, relaxed setting. There’s a real feel of sophistication and style to the interior and plenty of luxurious touches. So does the food match the surroundings? Well, first things first, it was time to order a couple of Kingfisher beers (Indian beers for the uninitiated), whilst perusing the menu. And while on the subject of drinks, as well as a great selection of local and imported beers and wines, there’s also a good selection of tempting cocktails. For our starter, we decided to share Yogi’s Mixed Grill, a mixed platter of chicken, lamb, king prawns and fish cooked in a charcoal tandoor. This is a great way to sample different flavours and textures and we thoroughly enjoyed, in particular, the boneless fish cubes marinated in spices, garlic and lemon juice, and the tandoori smoked lamb chops. We were reliably informed that the lamb had been marinating for a couple of days in specially prepared herbs and spices. No wonder it tasted so good! For mains, we chose two of Yogi’s signature dishes, the Lamb Shank Curry and Chicken

Rizalla, both served with Saffron Rice and a Garlic Naan. What a good choice! The Lamb Shank Curry served with a rich, spicy, tomatobased sauce, packed with delicious herbs and spices, was an absolute delight. The tender, moist lamb literally fell off the bone and perfectly complemented the flavours on the plate. Wow! Our second main was the Chicken Rizalla, chicken breast served in a creamy, white gravy with nuts, white peppercorns and white poppy seeds. Apparently, according to the menu, this a delicacy loved by the Nawabs of Bengal and I’m sure you can now add to that, the residents of Mandurah! A wonderfully, creamy dish with a hint of coconut, this will appeal to not only lovers of a milder curry but also fans of flavour-packed curries. Again, not to be missed! With its excellent food, fantastic ambience, and friendly, attentive staff, Yogi Contemporary Indian Restaurant comes highly recommended. Both seasoned curry lovers and those less used to sampling Asian cuisine will find plenty here to enjoy time and time again. My Favourite Dish

Ingredients

330g beef liver 1 lamb kidney 200g lamb shoulder 50g beef suet 1 minced onion 50g oats 100ml stock 1 tsp salt 10g cracked black pepper

By Kevin Cooper, Head Chef, The Clansman

Haggis Traditional Scottish haggis served in a crispy filo pastry case and topped with caramelised onion.

Method

Coarsely chop the meat and boil for an hour, saving the stock it produces. When cool, grate the liver. Finely chop the other meat. Finely chop the suet. Toast the oats in the oven. Use a shallow pan and avoid burning the oats. Mix the meats, suet, onion and oats together with the stock. Add salt and lots of pepper to taste. Put mixture in a greased glass bowl. Cover with foil. Steam for 2 hours. Don’t let the pan boil dry. Garnish with fried chopped red onions, cooked in butter with two teaspoons of brown sugar.

At The Clansman, we pride ourselves on offering our own Australian Haggis not just for Scots but for everyone else too! Using only the finest ingredients, we have created a delicious traditional dish adjusted to suit Australian standards. On our menu, Haggis is not served as a main with ‘Neeps and Tatties’ but is served as an entrée in a filo pastry basket topped with caramelised red onions. In that way, anyone can have a taste of this Scottish delicacy without having to order a whole meal. It’s a highly popular dish at The Clansman and we have had plenty of returning customers eager to try it again!

Owned by English couple Bob and Maryanne Charles, The Clansman is located on the banks of the Murray River at Lot 2 Tatham Road, South Yunderup, and offers spectacular views over the waters and the adjoining landscape. Operating primarily as a function centre, catering for weddings, private parties and corporate functions, the restaurant is also open at weekends, serving a selection of home cooked dishes while an A la Carte menu is also available at set times during the year. Seasonal variations apply so call 9537 6400 for further information or go online at www.theclansman.com.au 72

Recipe

Sweet potato and curry is a great taste combination. This recipe delivers rich full flavours and can be as hot as you like, just add more or less than the suggested amount of paste or you can even add a few fresh chopped chillies. Serves 4

Sweet Potato Curry the onion mixture. Once the chicken is sealed, add the sweet potato and coconut milk and simmer until the sweet potato is tender and the chicken is cooked through. If preparing the meal in advance, it is at this point that the dish can be left to cool down and then reheated later on. Add the spinach and stir for 1 to 2 minutes to wilt the leaves. This is a versatile curry and it works well as a side dish without the chicken. Or, to save time, instead of preparing chicken thighs, use pieces from a cooked barbecue chicken and add to the coconut milk at the same time as the sweet potato.

Ingredients oil for frying 2 tbsp Madras curry paste 1 onion, chopped 4 chicken thighs, cut into chunks 500g sweet potato, peeled and chopped 400ml can coconut milk bag of washed spinach leaves

Method Heat a tablespoon of oil and fry the curry paste for 1 minute. Add the onion and continue to fry for 1 minute while stirring. Add the chicken pieces and stir to coat with
