Winter Fashion Stay warm and
Stephanie Says…
The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert... Other popular textures on winter clothes are fur, again, faux or real, baroque and lace. Fur and baroque add touches of luxury to an outfit, and lace, being lighter and quite intricate in nature, adds a delicate note. Layering with such textures helps to define a body shape as well as creating a more interesting outfit. As for prints, there are plenty of leopard and snake prints around and new for the season is the winter floral print. This has a dark background with an oversized floral print. Winter colours are sumptuously rich, such as reds (especially oxblood), greens, strong cobalt blue, navy and purple, and metallics are still popular too. While colour is set to be prevalent, there is also a trend back to colour blocking with black and white. Men’s fashion embraces colour too with blues, greens and reds featuring strongly for chunky knits, shirts and within prints too. Add just one colourful item for layering on a cold day, stick to muted greys and black for the other pieces. And men don’t miss out either on leather jackets or the redefined bomber jackets. The latter comes with plenty of texture or with leather panels.
look cool!
After another hot summer, the thought of layering up and getting cosy seems quite appealing! So embrace the change of season as now is the perfect time to choose that winter essential, the leather jacket. For those who missed out on one during autumn, this season’s leather jacket is not only available in classic black but also in plenty of vibrant colours, including blue, green and red. The figure hugging biker style is still the most popular and looks great with skinny jeans as well as with dresses and skirts. Detailing on these jackets is fabulous with studs, exposed heavy zips and buckled straps. On the subject of jackets, gaining ground in popularity is the new-style bomber jacket. Featuring a strong sports influence, this season, latest designs are also incorporating a luxe feel with panels of silk, quilted fabric or leather. The pencil skirt may still be a wardrobe staple but it’s the A-line and flirty skater that are set to be the winter choices for skirts. Above or to the knee, in a weighty winter fabric, they are great with ankle boots. Leather is featuring hugely in winter fashion. It is soft, feminine and refined and comes in pants, tops, skirts and dresses, or adds an edge in the form of panels or sleeves. Whether faux or real, this season’s leather smooths the silhouette so is incredibly flattering.

Design For The Home The Kitchen
With interior trends often taking much of their influences from fashion runways these days, the kitchen is the ideal room in which to stamp some personality in the home. After all, as the most lived-in space, and as a place where friends and family regularly congregate, it offers a chance to really show off those creative skills. And, with open plan living the norm, there are plenty of options to consider and plenty of opportunities to create a unique look. So what’s happening in kitchen trends right now? Currently, the key look is sleek, minimalist and
striking in its simplicity. This is achieved by incorporating long benchtops, unfussy cabinetry and open shelving. Voids and floor space add to the minimal look and if careful thought has gone into planning the design of the kitchen, then the number of cabinets can be reduced too. As for the cabinets themselves, there is a definite requirement for quality workmanship with cabinets often designed to fit flush to the benchtop. Soft closing cabinet doors are essential, and drawers with no handles, using instead subtle recessed edges for fingers, are 26
home & garden becoming increasingly popular. For a more unique take on the minimalist look, use a single unit of cabinetry, perhaps a special one-off design, which can also be used as workbench space. Technological features can help to retain the uncluttered look too, such as pop up range hoods that are only visible when needed. Smaller versions of appliances or appliances that do more than one job can also help. The recent trend of glossy white kitchens is now starting to be replaced by textures that have a flatter finish with a more natural feel. For cabinetry, there is a demand for timber veneers, metal finish laminates, matte or satin white, black and dark grey polyurethane doors. Add depth and interest to the kitchen by showcasing a mixture of textures so try having floors in timber, brick, slate or polished concrete. Walls also look great in raw or painted brick, or concrete. Colours should be kept simple, such as white or black or simply left as the material’s natural colour. Brass accents are growing in popularity and look fabulous when teamed up with natural finishes. The warm colour and shine are a perfect foil to flat surfaces elsewhere in the kitchen. A pendant light or feature splashback are great ways to add a brass or bronze-like tone. When it comes to lighting, it is LED that is in demand. LED lighting can be installed in a myriad of places, making it easier to create ambiance, contrast and interest. Lights under and in cabinets, in flooring, ceilings and alcoves are easily installed and can even change colour to suit different occasions.

Bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience from his previous career in the UK, owner James Hoolahan and his team pride themselves on producing high quality work with a sharp attention to detail as well as first rate customer service. Plus, in the initial stages of planning, 3D-drawings can be produced together with a 3-dimensional walk through model allowing clients the opportunity to visualise the kitchen before the start of the manufacturing process. The featured project (see right) was designed for a client in Port Bouvard with the kitchen and bathrooms custom built by Merlin Cabinets. The brief from the client was for a modern stylish kitchen with a centre feature together with quality finishes. A Laminex high gloss timber grain finish was used on the cabinetry, Caesar stone tops for the kitchen and natural marble for the bathrooms. The kitchen and bathrooms also featured timber grain matched Laminex Diamond gloss doors, the draw systems are from Blum and the overhead cabinets featured Blum Aventos lift-up doors. healthier and cleaner and the Allergy Research Foundation now recommends reverse cycle systems as the most effective way to create a low allergen home. For further information on installing a reverse cycle air conditioning system, visit Mandurah specialists Ford and Doonan at Unit 2, 64 Reserve Drive, or call 9581 6888.
Reverse-cycle heating and cooling systems The mornings are getting colder and getting out of a nice warm bed is never much fun at this time of the year. Fine if you have ducted heating but not much fun if your house is designed with warmer days in mind and fitted with an evaporative system. So like increasing numbers of homeowners, why not rip out your old inefficient evaporative system and install a ducted refrigerated reverse-cycle system that works in the home all year round. With our warmer and increasingly more humid summers, your evaporative system may not even be doing its job in the summer anyway. Increased moisture in the air will, of course, nullify its effect and with regular maintenance required to ensure optimum performance, its initial lower cost may be outweighed by servicing costs. With a ducted refrigerated system, the days of cold winters and hot summers will be a distant memory. Yes, they are more expensive but the advantages are huge. As well as being able to both heat and cool, humidity levels can be easily controlled as can the temperatures of individual rooms. By controlling the humidity and temperature, the air you breathe is

Mini Paceman
Legendary marque continues to excite
Two years ago in The Mandurah Life, we reviewed the Mini Countryman, the 4-door, all-wheel drive model that was the brand’s largest production car to date. Now, it’s the turn of the stylish Mini Paceman which, although sharing similar characteristics to the Countryman, is very much a car with its own distinct personality. The seventh model in the Mini range, the 3-door Paceman features Mini’s all-new Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) body which side-on gives the car a dramatic low-slung sporty appearance. It might share the same compact SUV platform as the Countryman but visually with its sweeping lines and coupé-style roof swooping downwards towards the rear, the Paceman has a unique and individual look recognisable from any angle. Available in 2 variants, the Mini Cooper Paceman and the Mini Cooper S Paceman, both vehicles are powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine featuring fully variable valve management mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. In the Mini Cooper Paceman, the engine is tuned to develop 90kW of power and 160Nm of torque, propelling the car from 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds. Combined fuel consumption in this entry level Paceman is a claimed 6.5 litres per 100km while CO2 emissions are rated at 152 grams per kilometre. 36
The Mini Cooper S Paceman, the performance variant of the line-up, however, is a very different beast. Adding a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection, the Cooper S Paceman generates a maximum output of 135kW and peak torque of 240Nm. An over-boost function also provides powerful bursts of acceleration, increasing torque to as much as 260Nm between1,700rpm and 4,500rpm. These performance enhancements enable the S to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 7.5 seconds all on the way to a maximum speed of 217km/h. Despite this powerful acceleration, average fuel economy in the EU

Isuzu D-Max
The rugged, no-nonsense Ute with serious off-road capabilities
In the previous issue of The Mandurah Life, we reported on the recent arrival of Japanese brand Isuzu at Barbagallo Mandurah. This time around we take a more detailed look at its sturdy Ute, the Isuzu D-Max. As you would expect coming from the world’s best known truck manufacturer, the Isuzu D-Max has always been one of the most reliable and toughest of Utes on the market. And, having been sold in various incarnations in Australia over the past 40 years, it’s also been one of the most popular. However, the all-new 2013 version has managed to add a completely new dimension to an already well-rounded package. With sharpened exterior styling, plenty of standard mod-cons, improved performance and better fuel economy, the D-Max is now a serious player in both the light commercial utility sector and the family hauler market.
With a total of 12 separate variants available, including both 4-wheel drive and 2-wheel drive options, the D-Max is powered by Isuzu’s tried and tested 4JJ1-TC 3.0 litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. Producing 130Kw of power and 380Nm at 1800rpm, transmission choices are a five-speed manual transmission or the five-speed ‘Rev-Tronic’ automatic system. Capable of a payload of up to 1050kg and a braked towing capacity of 3000kg, the D-Max claims combined-cycle fuel consumption at 8.3 litres per 100km/h for the manual and 8.1 litres per 100km/h for the automatic – impressive figures indeed. Off-road, the D-Max really comes into its own. With a generous ground clearance of 235mm on the 4-wheel drive models coupled with its rigid chassis and low-down torque, the D-Max will handle pretty much anything our rough cont. pg 40 38

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Luxurious sedan gets impressive facelift
It’s now four years since the release of the current E-Class (W212) and the much anticipated facelift of Mercedes-Benz’s popular sedan offers plenty to get excited about. With significant styling changes, more equipment as standard, improved engines and a number of new hi-tech gadgets available, this revamp is more than just a mid-life tweak.
As one of Mercedes-Benz’s most successful models (the current W212 version has sold 700,000 saloons and 100,000 estates worldwide), and with more available variations than any other model (saloon, estate, cabriolet and coupé), any facelift to the E-Class is always going to be a well-planned affair. It’s no surprise then that this latest version comes

The same upgrades have also been applied to the E220 CDI Elegance BlueEfficiency, which also costs some $2500 cheaper. The new E250 Avantgarde BlueEfficiency may have increased in price by around $3K but as well as giving it a more potent engine, Mercedes-Benz has added extra features over and above that of the E200 and E220 CDI. These include a driver assistance package with adaptive cruise control, a synthetic leather dashboard trim, full LED headlights, a keyless start, a front seat memory function and 19-inch alloy wheels. Again, the E250 CDI Avantgarde gets the same upgrades and shaves over $1100 off the price. Moving up the range, a brand new dieselelectric hybrid replaces the 6-cylinder E350 CDI and a twin-turbo powered V6 E400 replaces the V6 E350. The E400 also features 360-degree surround view parking cameras, a digital radio, keyless entry and start, and a Harman Kardon premium surround sound system. The blistering, top of the range E63 AMG delivers a hair-raising 430kW and 800 Nm of torque and charges from 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. More refined, more economical and more imposing, the revamped E-Class remains the car to beat in its class. Trauma Insurance Getting your priorities in order By Jon Dixon
How many people do you know who have lost their house in a fire? Well I know two. So, in my 43 years I have known just two people who have lost their house in a fire! “So what, Jon?” I hear you say! Well, I find it amazing that everyone insures houses in case of fire and flood and is happy to spend over $1000 per year in cover for an event that is rare but people are not so willing to insure themselves against getting diagnosed with cancer or having a heart attack or stroke. Now, how many people do you know who have been diagnosed with cancer, had a heart attack or a stroke? Just in the last year I know of at least six! Now, I may not be a mathematical whiz but that sure sounds to me that the odds of me getting cancer are a lot higher than my house burning down. So, if I am going to take out an insurance policy that has a high chance of paying me out surely it makes sense to have that cover. Trauma and critical illness insurance cover is the most claimed insurance policy in Australia. Not life insurance, not TPD and not income protection, the most claims are for critical illness. So why don’t most people have this important cover? Just last week, I drove down to Albany to see a client who is about to get $168,000 after being diagnosed with bowel cancer at 47 years of age. He is healthy, eats well, exercises and was two weeks away from having his second colonoscopy when a gut pain became more than a bad case of gastro! The insurance claim is based on diagnosis and is not work tested so
I advised him to stop work and use the claim proceeds to work on his health...not his wealth. The $168,000 is not a huge pay-out but the changes to his life with some tax free cash will be immeasurable. He can take a year or two off work, pay off his mortgage, spend time with family and concentrate on getting well without worrying about money. I told him to put on weight, go on holiday with his family and spend whatever it takes on the best medical advice. This is why we should all have critical illness cover. Life is a one-off event and if a $168,000 payment can save or extend your life or make your last days on this planet more enjoyable, then this cover is priceless. For about $100 per month you could insure both husband and wife for $100,000 of cover and you can insure your children below 18 for $50,000. Where would you get $50,000 to take 3 months off work to be with your son or daughter at the best children’s hospital in Australia? Do you think private health cover pays for the latest cancer drugs and flights to Melbourne? Trauma cover is payable on cancer, stroke, heart attack, heart disease, failure of any major organ, liver disease, brain damage, M.S., motor neurone disease plus many other conditions. How many people do you know in the last 12 months who could have claimed if they had had trauma insurance? Jon Dixon is the Managing Director of Dixon Financial Group, Bunbury, one of the leading financial planning firms in the south west. He also has strong family ties to Mandurah. Artist Review
Trudi Whitcher
Local Mandurah artist Trudi Whitcher was the inaugural onsite Studio Artist in Residence at INQB8. mandurah, beginning in April 2012 and completing her residency with a solo exhibition launched on 22 June 2013. Gallery Development Officer Carolyn Marks interviews: Trudi how did you feel when you found out your application had been successful? “So fortunate; when looking back over my journey there has been such strides made in the style of my artwork, in the changes of my mind set and focus for my future. I feel very proud of my journey, so grateful to my family for their support and encouragement and thankful to the powers that be for approving my application for residency, which by the way, I held little hope for. “ Did you have a specific plan or concept in mind to explore? “The concept of meeting place, past and present, tied in with Mandurah’s waterways was the launching point for the studio works. Expanding and developing ways of working with edicol dyes and mixed media was the other branch of study I had set for myself for the year.” What, if any, expectations did you hold for your residency and did they change as the year progressed? “I expected my studio year to be a time to develop as an artist. On one level that has happened, but not in the way I had imagined. I was in fact a copier of whatever was in front of me which I did with fair technical skill. I painted for others, and looked for their accolades. Now I am an interpreter. More of who I am is involved in the creative process. I create, not only because I want to, but because I need to. “

“These days, I play with my media. It is fun, liberating and enlightening. My explorations have enabled me to follow through when questions arise such as; “I wonder if I could use dry media on canvas” or “What will happen if I use Edicol dye over pastel”. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. The understanding that arises creates a quiet confidence that drives my creativity. When I look at the works created, I actually see something of myself in them; this is a new thing for me. “ If you could sum up with one positive, what would that be? “Evolving ideas and having the time and space to allow one artwork to inform another has been the best experience that has arisen from working in the studio. I can’t begin to say how much the studio has meant to me. Though I will miss it immensely, I am excited to see how I will put into practise what this year has set in motion.“ 63 Ormsby Terrace, Mandurah 9550 3989 | www.inqb8.com.au 56
The Common Threads of Identity exhibition was presented at INQB8 Mandurah from 24 May until 9 June. The exhibition, born from the 2013 Mandurah Stretch Arts Festival event Common Threads of Identity: Wearable Art Competition, featured fifteen of the twenty one wearable art entries, the two body accessory designs and one accessory from the four body art entries, all of whom explored the common theme of Identity. Gallery visitors viewed the individual exhibition pieces along a white virtual catwalk. Some pieces sat comfortably on their black or white wrapped mannequins while others hung still and suspended from the walls and gallery ceiling creating horizon highlights and visual spikes throughout the gallery space. Three walls of the gallery featured block photographs of the competition models captured during the judging process by photographer Michael Kelly at Star Creations. The addition of the colourful and expressive images allowed the individual wearable art pieces to connect with their personalities, breathing life into the exquisite stationary exhibits. During the exhibition the audience was able to view each exhibit in detail including the winning competition entries: Sharyn Hamilton, Claire Hunt and Julie Smith for ‘Sirens of the Sea’, Kerry Gelmi for ‘Entwined’, Gemma Bonney for ‘The Guardian’, Rosy Chalken for ‘Tree of Life’ and Nikki Marie Rogers for ‘Deception’ and Highly Commended awards: Leanne Greene and Leanne Slayford for ‘Ex Terra Lucem’ and Sherr Bottell for ‘Spiralling Celtics’.

Exhibition Review
Common Threads of Identity
The exhibition launch drew a diverse crowd of eighty who listened intently to competition judge and now event patron Gillian Peebles as she officially opened the exhibition and then to Rebecca Nelson, Stretch Arts Festival Coordinator from the City of Mandurah who with the help of project manager Barb Thoms launched the new theme ‘Drift’ and application packs for the 2014 Common Threads of Identity: Wearable Art Competition. At the close of the exhibition on June 9, several of the designers presented a combined artist talk which revealed secrets of making and process as well as allowing the audience to gain a deeper perspective on the project. Entry for the 2014 Common Threads of Identity: Wearable Art Competition is now open and will be accepted up until the 15 December 2014. Participants will be offered free up-skilling and modelling workshops as well as a fashion photography shoot held on the day of the closed judging. day and age, cameras on mobile phones are quite sophisticated and can produce some great shots and are always close at hand if you don’t have the camera close by. There are loads of fun apps that can be downloaded to manipulate photos as well. The great thing about photographing friends and family is that they are generally comfortable around you and should be less self-conscious if they are engaged in something and not posing for a photo. A photo of people doing what they enjoy most creates wonderful memories of events. There is also much less pressure on people to perform as is expected. Nan knitting, dinner parties, kids on trampolines and bikes, parents reading to children all make great ideas for candid photos of friends and family interacting with each other. Kids and grandparents having hugs and chatting are wonderful memories to capture too. Choose flattering poses and camera angles. If a person has a large nose it will not be a flattering photo if taken side on. And, with large framed or short people, don’t get up high and shoot downwards as this will make them look shorter;
Photographing friends and family – successfully! I love looking at family photos of people engaged in what they are doing and interacting with each other. They don’t have to be looking at the camera to make it a great shot and a moment in time to remember. The joy of photographing family and friends comes from that special relationship that you already have - you know that special smile or expression that makes them unique. Therefore, getting a photo of that moment in time should be easier and very rewarding. Try joking around with them if they are feeling self-conscious and get them laughing as it’s nice when the smile doesn’t look forced. Rather than a bland, awkward photo of the family standing facing the photographer and looking at the camera try for something a little more unique. Natural shots of kids engaged in what they are doing work well. Kids are vibrant and full of energy so it makes sense to show it in photos. Very few children like to stand or sit still and face the camera and smile on cue! Let’s face it, as adults we rarely enjoy being asked to do the same thing! So, to get great photos of family and friends we need to be spontaneous. In this

Golf Tips with Craig Tapp
Hi everyone, I hope you are hitting the fairways, the greens in regulation and holing many putts. Talking of putting, this leads me into the new ruling that the anchoring of the putter will be banned from January 2016 as it is apparently making the game too easy. Too easy! Obviously the old Pimms and lemonade drinking, leather-patched elbow jacket, cigar smoking jokers at the Royal and Ancient haven’t been hanging around the car park at Meadow Springs and Kennedy Bay. Every day, I see the tormented faces of golfers as they walk off the course mumbling to themselves before hitting the bar to numb the pain. Too easy! I never hear anyone saying, “yeah, mastered golf, has anyone got a Rubik’s Cube as I need more of a challenge?” So, following this ruling, how can we make the game easier now that we can’t use the long putter anchor style?
good putter. It takes no athletic ability nor strength and has no age discrimination. All it takes is a bit of dedication and time hitting putts on the practice green.
4. Experiment with a softer ball. Most players are so worried about how far they hit the ball they end up using golf balls that are way too hard. Forget the ego, try a softer ball that will give much better control on all your scoring shots – chips, pitching, bunkers and putting. 5. Stretch. One thing I have noticed over 25 years as a professional is that all the best players have better flexibility than most. If you go to a PGA tour event you will see just about all the players going through a stretching routine in the locker room before playing. So before you leave the house, do a few stretches, arrive at the course early, (leaving your lob wedge in the boot) hit a few putts, go on the course, hit your wedges close with your new yardages, hole out well and shoot a great score. With the money you win off your mates, book yourself a lesson and continue the improvement cycle. If you are still losing money, book a lesson and start to get some of that money back! Good luck and good golfing!
1. Throw the lob wedge in the bin and learn the proper technique to hit a bump and run shot. Almost every club golfer could lose a few shots off their handicap by learning to hit the time honoured bump and run instead of going for the highly risky, rarely effective lob shot. 2. Fine tune your yardages. Ever heard the player-caddy banter on TV? It’s all about getting the correct yardage because the player already knows how far he hits each club to the metre. Most golfers that I teach have no real idea how far they carry the ball. To see quick results, go out on the course when no one is around, grab a laser and work out the distances for your sand iron, wedge, gap wedge and 9 iron. With these clubs yardages you will find your scoring shots will achieve much better results setting up birdies and saving pars.

Introducing ...
Lumicell Wave 6
The cellulite and body contouring system with quick, visible and long lasting results! Millions of women, regardless of weight or age are affected by cellulite. At risk of developing in different stages, each one influenced by oestrogen hormones, poor circulation, water retention, increased fat cells and a loss of skin elasticity, the condition is thought to occur in 80-90% of post-adolescent females.
consecutively target specific subcutaneous (the layer of tissue that lies immediately below the dermis of vertebrate skin) and adipose (loose connective tissue) layers. Firstly, a powerful vacuum massage releases lymphatic blockages and stimulates blood flow, while an infra-red light warms up the tissue to stimulate fat release. Next, ultrasound intensely treats the deeper fatty layers encouraging fat depletion. Finally, the radio frequency increases collagen production, tightening and visibly improving the skin’s appearance. Treatments are virtually pain-free (some clients with sensitive skin may experience a slight warming sensation) and neither skin tissues nor capillaries are damaged. Once treatment is completed the skin feels taut and the legs feel lighter. Until now, cellulite has been virtually impossible to eliminate but the new Lumicell Wave 6 system corrects this stubborn condition by addressing the causes of cellulite formation at its source. It takes individual results to levels never seen before! The Lumicell Wave 6 is now available in Mandurah at Total Skin and Body Centre Day Spa. For further information, call 9535 4530 or visit them at Unit 2/2A, Peel Street (next to the Atrium Hotel).
What are the different stages of cellulite? Cellulite is classified into 4 categories:Stage 1 – Referred to as an ‘orange peel’ appearance to the skin, this stage is visible only when pinching the skin. Stage 2 – An ‘orange peel’ appearance visible without pinching the skin. Stage 3 – A dimpling or mattress- type appearance Stage 4 – All of the above plus a loss of skin elasticity causing fat clusters, a rippling effect and vascular problems such as spider veins and bruising.
Is it possible to get rid of this unsightly problem? Although a healthy diet and regular exercise will help reduce body weight, rarely does this lifestyle choice impact on cellulite. Instead, because cellulite develops in different layers of the skin, a combination of approaches is required to address cellulite at each specific area.
What is Lumicell Wave 6 and how does it work? Lumicell Wave 6 is a new cellulite management system offering a targeted approach to cellulite and body contouring. Combining a range of powerful technologies, the system is able to penetrate all of the layers of skin affected. During treatment, 3 phases are used to 64

Dr Harvey’s Clinic Part 2
Wrinkle relaxers
Whether we like it or not, we are all going to get wrinkles and in most cases we will have already acquired some! However, the good news is that it is perfectly possible to get long lasting, effective treatment for them. Wrinkles are classified under three different groups. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that are only present during active muscle contractions whereas static wrinkles are present even when the muscle is not used. Usually common in slightly older patients, hyper-dynamic wrinkles occur when the muscles are in an increased state of involuntary contraction. Doctors will be able to recognise these differences and advise the appropriate treatment. Wrinkle relaxers are made from a bacterial source although no bacteria are actually injected. Presently, the naming of brands is prohibited in Australia but there are currently 2 TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) approved products available. These products have undergone thorough research and have been put through strict testing conditions so always beware of unapproved types available on overseas websites. So how does the treatment work? Put simply, a tiny injection of the product into the appropriate muscle blocks the transmitter chemicals within the nerve impulse that controls the muscle contraction. This causes the muscle to stay in its relaxed and uncontracted position. The doctor used should have a detailed knowledge of the facial muscles and their functions as well as the corresponding antagonistic (opposing)
muscles. This is vital to be able to balance the functional effect of these muscles to ensure successful treatment. Initial treatment periods vary depending on age, number of treatments undertaken and the severity of the wrinkles but typically are between 3 and 6 months long. To obtain optimum results, it is recommended to have treatments every 3 months for about a year as keeping the muscle in a sustained condition of inactivity will lead to the muscle taking longer to recover, leading to a reduction in the wrinkle. After 12 months of treatment, patients will usually acquire increased longevity of effect and may then only need to repeat the treatment every 4 to 5 months. There are no long-term effects in muscle action, it will fully recover in time, but the wrinkle will return if treatment is discontinued. The effects from the treatment are usually visible after 3 to 5 days but it may take up to 14 days before the full effect is seen. The doctor can then conduct a review and undertake further treatment, if necessary. Dr Harvey Sacks is dedicated to the advancement and teaching of best practice cosmetic medicine. Contact lenses
As one of the safest ways of correcting an eyesight problem, it is estimated that around 130 million people now use contact lenses worldwide. A thin plastic or silicone disc that sits directly on the surface of the eye, contact lenses are used to correct problems such as near-sightedness, far-sightedness, presbyopia (a condition where the eyes are unable to focus on near objects) and astigmatism (an abnormal curvature of the clear outer covering of the cornea that causes blurry vision). They may also be used after cataract surgery. Enormous improvements have been made in the design and manufacturing of contact lenses over the last few decades and today lenses are vastly more comfortable and easier to wear. Today, most wearers use soft contact lenses that conform to the shape of the eye, are comfortable and generally stay in place well. However, there are still plenty of choices for contact lens wearers.
can take longer to adjust to, but, given the right care, can be worn for up to 2 or 3 years before needing to be replaced.. Also available in various types, they are also known as rigid or gas permeable lenses.
Specialised Contact Lenses
Soft Contact Lenses
Depending on vision requirements, there may be a need for specialised lenses. These include hybrid lenses for those with an irregular corneal curvature, bifocal or multifocal lenses and tinted lenses that can help colour blindness by enhancing colour perception. Whatever the requirement, always start with a consultation at your local optometrist to get a thorough eye examination and fitting. Your local eye specialist will then schedule a series of follow up examinations to ensure the original lens chosen is still the right solution. These will vary in frequency depending on the individual patient. The above information was supplied by Elite Eyewear, suppliers of personal eye care and eyewear for the Peel Region. Visit them in Pinjarra at Shop 12B, Pinjarra Junction, or at 7/6 Baroy Street, Falcon. Take advantage now of a special offer of 6 months’ supply of contact lenses for just $180*. *Conditions apply
These come in various types and include:Daily wear - Typically the cheapest option, these are worn during the day and then removed at night. Length of use depends on the brand. Extended wear – These can be worn whilst sleeping but must be removed for cleaning and disinfecting at least once a week. Disposable – Generally the most expensive option and worn during the day and removed at night. They are simply used for the recommended period and then discarded.
Hard Contact Lenses More breathable than soft lenses and therefore reducing the risk of eye infections, hard lenses must be removed for cleaning and disinfection each night. Often used by wearers who have had problems adjusting to soft lenses, hard lenses 68

Life’s Health Tips
Beware of hidden sugar in foods
5. Dried Fruit Often containing high amounts of sugar, the problem here is compounded by the fact that it’s easier to eat a greater amount of dried fruits then normal fruit. 6. Yoghurt Flavoured versions, in particular, will contain added sugar as will low and non-fat brands. 7. Breakfast Cereals Notorious for their sugar content! Again, read the labels and compare brands. 8. Health Bars Avoid snacking on these! Many contain the equivalent of up to 3 teaspoons of sugar per 30g bar. 9. Canned Vegetables Often contain added sugar to help preserve them for longer. Avoid and buy fresh. 10. Canned Soup Again, as with canned vegetables, sugar can be used to extend the shelf-life of the product.
So called ‘healthy’ foods may not always be what they seem. Here’s 10 foods that often contain large amounts of hidden sugar:1. Fruit Juices They might seem healthy but some fruit juices can contain the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar! 2. Tomato Sauce Sugar is often added to tomato-based products to counter acidity. Research has shown that up to one third of the contents of a bottle of sauce can be sugar. 3. Peanut Butter Tastes great but it’s full of added sugar. Read the label and compare brands. 4. Salad Dressings Low-fat dressings are often guilty of replacing fat with extra sugar and salt to improve the taste.

My Favourite Dish By Jiradej Deesri, Head Chef, Jasmine Thai
Thai Soft Shell Crab Salad Deep fried soft shell crab on a green salad topped with a Thai-style dressing This long term favourite is a dish we also used to serve regularly at Som and Geoff ’s previous restaurant, The Som Thai Kitchen, in Broome and makes for a fantastic light lunch or evening meal. The crab we use is a farmed mud crab from Myanmar (Burma) and the Thai-style dressing is made from chilli paste, coconut milk, dried coconut, sugar and salt. The heat of the dressing can also be adjusted to suit from mild to medium through to hot. To create the dish, we deep fry the crab in batter for about 10 minutes and the sauce takes even less time to create (around 5 minutes). Once cooked, the crab is served on a bed of green salad which includes a mix of fresh lettuce,
tomato, red onion, red capsicum and cashew nuts. The sweet crab meat goes perfectly with the crispy batter and the dish has proved to be just as popular with Mandurah locals as it was with the locals and visitors to the North West. The Thai Soft Shell Crab is currently available on the menu at $23. Jasmine Thai is run by Som and Geoff Treloar, who previously owned and operated awardwinning Thai restaurant Som Thai Kitchen in Broome. Located at Shop 7, 2 The Palladio, Mandurah Ocean Marina, the restaurant is open 7 days for lunch from 11am to 3pm and dinner from 5pm to late. The restaurant is also now fully licensed. Honey and Mustard Chicken Marinades are ideal for making a headstart on lunch or dinner and, what’s more, marinated meat is always beautifully tender and rich in flavours. This recipe uses honey and Dijon mustard as its marinade base but you could always use wholegrain mustard, or add 1 tsp of paprika or ½ tsp chilli sauce for a fiery edge.
Ingredients (Serves 4) small bunch flat leaf parsley ½ cup Dijon mustard ½ cup runny honey 3 garlic cloves 2 tbsp olive oil salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 800g chicken thighs, skinned
Method Place chicken thighs in an ovenproof dish. Place all other ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. Pour the marinade mixture over the chicken, cover with cling wrap and refrigerate for at least 1½ hours or overnight. Preheat the oven to 180˚C. Remove cling wrap and bake in the oven for 30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Serve with brown rice and a green salad. Enjoy!
Winter Recipes Apple Crumble Apple Crumble, perfect for get-togethers with friends or family, is an old favourite and a whole lot better when home-cooked rather than bought in from a supermarket’s frozen section.
Ingredients (Serves 8)
For the filling 750g green apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced 1tbs lemon juice 100g caster sugar 1tsp ground cinnamon 3 tbs plain flour
For the crumble 225g plain flour 110g soft brown sugar 1tsp ground cinnamon 75g butter at room temperature
Method Preheat oven to 180˚C. To make the filling, combine the apples, lemon juice, caster sugar, cinnamon and flour in an ovenproof dish. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, sugar and ground cinnamon. Rub in the butter using finger tips until the mixture is crumbly. Cover the apples with the crumble mixture. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown. This crumble is best enjoyed when warm or at room temperature. Serve with ice cream or warm custard. Try adding desiccated coconut or a little nutmeg to the crumble topping, or thawed frozen raspberries to the filling for delicious variations on this classic apple pudding. Naughty but nice! 72

absorption of minerals from the wheat by the body. Sourdough fermentation also predigests gluten, allowing some people who are sensitive to gluten to enjoy properly fermented breads. Sauerkraut (cabbage) is the most traditional fermented vegetable pickle. Other vegetables can be added to your cabbage mix and this is usually known as kimchi. Sauerkraut is made by slicing cabbage and rubbing in salt to draw out the juice, which is usually rich in vitamin K. It is then covered and left to ferment for 2 to 3 days. The juice ferments into vinegar which contains the beneficial juice nutrients and all the good probiotic bacteria to aid digestion. Pop this into the fridge once fermented add a little to your salads or vegetables every day. Kombucha tea is another great way to get your quota of probiotics. Kombucha is the fermentation of tea (usually green organic tea) and sugar by a mushroom-looking entity called a scoby. Magic or otherwise, this scoby feeds on the sugar and tannins and performs the miracle of producing a beverage that contains B vitamins and enzymes that have great beneficial qualities. So don’t be afraid to embrace some fermented foods. Your body will love you if you do. Taste the love for a little longer and digest well.
Joyous ferments
Many of us will be aware of the benefits of eating yoghurt due to the existence within it of a culture called acidophilus. Well known for its health benefits, acidophilus is a term used to describe a number of bacteria that help with digestion. However, there is also a number of other forms of beneficial fermented foods that are making a comeback to the food scene. Fermentation is a process by which foods are pre-digested by good bacteria, fungi and friendly enzymes – as in the yoghurt example, it is a naturally occurring process. There are a number of fermented foods, including yoghurt, kombucha tea, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, olives, pickles and sourdough bread. These fermented foods contain high amounts of beneficial bacteria that help improve digestion and strengthen our immune system. Also, when we ferment foods before eating them, it’s like partially digesting foods before we consume them, making the nutrients easier for our body to assimilate. These are just some of the reasons why it’s wise to include some in our everyday diet. In years gone by, many foods were made by traditional methods that included the fermentation process. As food technology has modernised, many of these traditional methods have been superseded to the detriment of our health. Bread, for example, was naturally leavened with wild yeasts (sourdough) because commercial fast-rising yeast wasn’t available. As the wild yeasts in the sourdough need time to ferment (usually about 8 to 10 hours) the bacteria in the yeast helps digest phytic acids, a substance in the bran of all whole grains. These phytic acids inhibit the 74
