Spring Fashion

New season trends

Spring has arrived laden with new ideas to freshen up our wardrobes. It’s a season of bold looks and versatile trends, many of which work beautifully together. Carrying on it from its popularity in winter, the striking colour duo of black and white is the strongest trend to stand out for spring. Create a head-to-toe colour block outfit or wear a stripe, check, or a digital or abstract print. The main thing is to keep the line of the clothes simple so that the impact of the black and white is maintained. The crop top trend gets a grown up edge when kept to these two classic colours, especially as the new crop exposes just a glimpse of midriff. Cut-outs are perfectly suited to black and white too. By strategically cutting away geometric shapes, tops and dresses have a stronger line and make quite a statement. Adding a fresh look to spring is white and redone for a current look is the essential white shirt, which is beautifully tailored and oversized. Worn buttoned up, it looks pristine with white pants or tucked into a skirt. Look out for cut-outs, sheer panels and sleeves to the elbow or mid-upper arm. The monochrome imagery isn’t all we have to look forward to – blues, especially cobalt, are set to be big this spring. Again, the impact works best when the blue is delivered in a head-to-toe outfit. Still holding on fast to its spring roots, the floral trend is as popular as ever. Prints are digitally enhanced and bright, some still retaining the dark background seen in winter floral prints. Adding on-trend cut-outs adds a new edgy dimension to floral spring dresses. But what’s especially new is the oriental influence with blossom flowers on silk, giving prints an exotic feel. Blue is a popular colour for men this spring too with shades ranging from bright cobalt to more subdued navy. It’s a head-totoe look again and with tailored colour blocked or tonal pieces. The result is a sophisticated yet seemingly effortless outfit. Never losing its appeal is denim and there are countless wardrobe items in various shades of the timeless fabric to be found over the next months. A reworked denim shirt for spring is fresh with tailored trousers and a tie, or there are options to wear denim on denim. Mela Purdie at Beez Neez Boutique 8

Design For The Home Renovation Special Five do’s and five don’ts of renovating

Your kids are settled at school, you get on well with your neighbours and you love your house. Only problem is, it’s not big enough. Sound familiar? So after a great deal of thought, you decide to extend and renovate the home. That way, you get to stay exactly where you are and, what’s more, you can put that hefty government stamp duty fee (incurred when moving) towards your own house. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Get a reputable builder in and a few months down the line you will have a bigger house exactly where you want to live. Well, if you are about to embark on the journey of extending or renovating the family home, here are a few tips worth considering. Remember, a well-planned project will save a great deal of time, stress and cash!

It sounds easy enough but this is where most people struggle. Building onto an existing home can be costlier than many people think, particularly if it’s a first floor extension. Scaffolding alone can run into thousands of dollars. Be sure of the funds you can borrow or have available and make certain you have enough to cover the required work. Plus, once you have received a price for the work, check that sufficient funds have been allowed by the builder for key areas of the home. If you always wanted stone bench-tops, have they been included in that special price? Beware of ‘extra-overs’, builder-speak for additional costs added to the original quote as work progresses. These extras are often how builders significantly boost their profits.

DO your research

Builders big and small will have plenty of projects on at any one time and they may perform a juggling act to keep clients happy. Make sure you keep on top of the projected dates discussed and, if possible, have a clause built into the contract that states a definitive end point to the works.

DO insist on a clear time frame

There are plenty of builders out there looking for work, which means it’s a highly competitive market. Make sure you get at least 3 quotes for the work and don’t be afraid to negotiate. Ask family, friends and colleagues if they have a builder they can recommend through first-hand experience. There’s nothing better than a personal recommendation from someone you trust. If you do favour one particular builder, visit one of their display homes or recently completed projects. This will give you a chance to check out their quality of work and attention to detail.

DO insist on one point of contact There’s nothing worse than building up a rapport with someone from your chosen building firm during the initial negotiations and then being given another point of contact once work has begun. This is one of the primary sources of frustration amongst home-owners when dealing with builders.

DO have a clear budget Decide what you want to spend and stick to it.

attending to at the same time, each with their own demands. Frustrating as it may be as time ticks away, an open and transparent site supervisor should be able to put your mind at rest that the project is still progressing on schedule. Insist on a weekly update of works planned as this will also help you to plan around various jobs.

Further frustration can also be caused by speaking to different people each time you phone up. Always insist on your chosen point of contact or you may find confusion ensues.

DO keep an eye on the quality of work as it progresses

DON’T get fobbed off with poor excuses or jargon

Remember, the workmen on site will generally not be employed directly by your chosen builder instead they will be contracted in to do the job. This may mean there is a lack of consistency in the quality and finish of the work. As work progresses, make sure you keep a snag list that can be adhered to and if not immediately, then at least on completion. Write down each concern as it occurs to you as you won’t remember every small item at the end of the build.

Remember, you are the client and if you would like something done in a certain way then, as long as it’s fair and reasonable, stick to your guns. Most builders like easy jobs that produce good returns in the quickest time possible. They would rather not have to involve themselves in one-off, unique fixtures or finishings. Beware of comments such as, “sorry sir, that’s the way we have always done it,” or, “that’s not the way it’s done in the south-west.”

DON’T pay progress payments until specific work is completed

DON’T overpay for minor additions or changes

Builders will require progress payments at various stages of the build. These will often be paid directly by your bank to the builder on receipt of an invoice. Beware of invoices submitted early before a particular stage has been completed. Always ensure that even the tiniest detail has been completed. An unpaid bill for a valid reason will always tend to focus a builder on getting the job done.

With all builds there are always going to be minor changes that will need to be made as the project progresses. Some will be unavoidable; some will only become apparent as rooms take shape. For example, fitting another electrical point or installing another down-light is not a major job when the electrician is already visiting the home tomorrow. Also, don’t get talked into paying over the odds for small alterations. You can always have them done by someone else.

DON’T get stressed by in-action During the project, there will undoubtedly be days when it appears little or nothing is being achieved. Try not to despair as remember, the builder will have other clients they are

DON’T settle the final account until you are completely satisfied Your builder will make a final inspection of the property with you on completion of the works. This is the final time to get anything that concerns you off your chest while you have the opportunity. It’s also time to check that snag list and to ensure that every minor detail, no matter how small, is attended to. Make sure you don’t part with that final payment until you are entirely happy with the finished job. ... cont. pg 30 28

Kitchen Renovations

Don’t forget the finishing touches. LED lights, glass cabinet doors and soft-closing, handleless doors are all currently very popular. For further information on renovating or installing a new kitchen, contact local specialists Merlin Cabinets. Offering free advice covering every step of the process, clients can also view a range of stylish products inside the showroom at Unit 3, 14 Thornborough Road.

As the focal point of the home, a kitchen renovation needs to be well-planned and equally well budgeted for. With a huge range of products on the market to choose from, it can often be quite an overwhelming experience when deciding on fixtures, fittings and finish. Try visiting a local showroom to get a feel for the range of doors, benchtops, splashbacks and hardware available. Imagine the existing room without the current cabinets in place and consider the space available. It might be possible to create more space by removing existing walls or bulkheads. Also, will the kitchen change in shape and therefore impact on the current floor coverings? Consider the cost of any new tiling or, if keeping the existing look, are the original tiles still available? Finally, if the aesthetics of the kitchen are to change with the repositioning of a sink or fridge, consider the location of the current services. Moving plumbing or electrical connections can be costly and unnecessary. Factor in the timeframe for completion. A new kitchen will need designing, manufacturing and installing and this process can take up to a couple of months. Typically, an average kitchen can be installed within a 2-3 day period although a kitchen with stone tops can take longer while the stone mason manufactures the tops.

Updating Air-Conditioning A home renovation is the perfect time to update an ageing air-conditioning system. If the renovation process includes adding additional living space to the home, it may be a necessity anyway. With our WA summers getting hotter and hotter, an effective, cost efficient air-conditioning system is becoming more and more important. So what’s the best way to ensure the home remains comfortable all year round? Many homes throughout Australia are fitted with evaporative systems and, although these systems are generally cheaper to install and reasonably effective, they do have some obvious drawbacks. Firstly, when the summer temperatures climb to extreme levels, usually when the mercury reaches around 35 degrees centigrade, an evaporative system starts to struggle. With record temperatures in WA over recent summers this can mean plenty of days 30

without reliable cooling. Secondly, as opposed to ducted airconditioning systems, evaporative cooling systems, as the name suggests, don’t offer heating in the home. Therefore, as well as experiencing uncomfortable days during the summer, the home will never properly warm up in the winter months. Finally, we all know what an eye-sore large, roof mounted evaporative units can be. Just have a look around your neighbourhood and see for yourself. So if you have run out of patience with your inefficient evaporative system, why look to install a ducted air-conditioning system? Quiet, efficient, easy to maintain and operated via a wall mounted LCD control that controls all functions, you’ll be able to enjoy cool summer days (and warm winter mornings) at the touch of a button. With some systems, you can even set internal temperatures away from the home through apps available to download onto smart phones. Yes, they are more expensive but the advantages are huge. As well as being able to both heat and cool, humidity levels can be easily controlled as can the temperatures of individual rooms. By controlling the humidity and temperature, the air you breathe is healthier and cleaner and the Allergy Research Foundation now recommends reverse cycle systems as the most effective way to create a low allergen home. Replacing your evaporative system is easier than you think with ducted systems often able to use the same vents as your current evaporative system. All you need to do is take along your building plans to your local supplier and they will plan the rest. When renovating, also consider a quality ducted brand as these will often add value to a home and eventually help with resale. For further information on installing a ducted air conditioning system, contact Mandurah specialists Ford and Doonan at Unit 2, 64 Reserve Drive, on 9581 6888.

Updating Home Technology What is a Custom Integrator? Well, put simply, they are sometimes just as important to a new renovation design as an electrician or plumber. For those that place a high value on the home entertainment system, be it for music, movies or TV or for those that want to secure the home with an effective alarm or camera system, talking to a CI before the start of the build is a must. Renovating is not just about knocking down walls, so while the hood is up on the home, why not apply some of the latest home automation mod cons by upgrading lighting, security, audio and video. Now available in Mandurah, Control 4 is the most sophisticated home automation system on the market. Plus, even more importantly, it is the only true retrofit option. Unlike other home automation systems that must be installed during the initial build, Control 4 is perfect for renovations, allowing cabled and wireless products to work seamlessly together. Upgrading lighting systems is as simple in some cases as replacing an existing light switch with an elegant, modern automated C4 light control. By effectively adding a “brain” to 32

the home, the system offers an advanced, easy-to-operate control network over the operating systems in the home. Why not upgrade to a custom fitted, concealed audio system? Listen to any source, at any level in any room and control it simply from one intuitive interface. Get rid of the mountain of remote controls by letting C4 work out all the inputs, outputs and connections. It’s simple. And, don’t forget to protect the new investment with an integrated security system. With Control 4 you can check-in securely from anywhere in the world through a smart phone or tablet. To arrange a demonstration of how Control 4 can enhance your lifestyle, contact Mediatek, exclusive Mandurah distributors, on 9581 6035, or visit the showroom at Unit 1, 81 Gordon Road (inside Mandurah Flyscreens and Security Doors).

Roller & Inline Skating at The Rink, Bunbury Get fit and have fun!

Skating is becoming an increasingly popular sport and an increasingly popular way of getting fit. Great fun, inexpensive and accessible, the health benefits of skating are wide-ranging plus it can make for a great social outing with friends. If it’s a healthier lifestyle you are after, then there are plenty of positives to be gained. Regular skating improves aerobic fitness, tones whilst building stronger, more stable pelvis, hip and leg muscles, improves endurance and reduces body fat. Interested in finding out more about skating? Well, the good news is that Bunbury is home to The Rink, one of the leading national skating centres and the hub of roller and inline skating in the south west. Operating for over 10 years, and just one hour’s drive from Mandurah, the centre provides skating activities suitable for all ages and skating abilities. Here are their top ten tips, recommended by Coach Susan Brooks, to skate yourself to good health:1. Sleep well and eat nutritiously to give yourself plenty of pre-exercise energy. 2. Get into the right mood. Before you jump into your skates, add a glide to your step by grooving to upbeat music or skate with friends to make the experience really enjoyable. 3. Other people matter. Find a skating buddy to keep you enthused and motivated. 4. Grow your knowledge. Reach for small, achievable goals that will boost your selfefficacy. Participate in lessons, either private or in classes, to boost your co-ordination and confidence. This is particularly recommended for beginners. 5. Planning to skate outside? See yourself flying down the cycle path with your MP3 on? Outdoor inline skating is fun but again take some lessons and get your skills up to enjoy skating outdoors safely. It’s not the best place to start.

6. Get in flow. Break down each session into smaller episodes, matching the challenge to your next skill set while practising regularly all that you have already achieved. Regularly assess your progress and apply your full concentration to the activity, congratulating yourself when you do well. 7. Enjoy the burn. Don’t be afraid to feel your heart rate go up and learn to love the burn in your muscles. Don’t just sit on the side and watch. 8. Involve your mind and your body. Keep learning! Learn more about the basic skills at the regular classes and participate in artistic, inline hockey, derby and speed skating. 9. Reliable knowledge. Talk to a qualified instructor about equipment. Do you need to purchase your own, if so, when? What is the level of your skills and what type do you need? How much protective gear will you need to help you learn that next step? 10. Get good mind fuel after exercise. Exercise facilitates brain cell growth and while your muscles are recuperating after the effort, your brain is actively busy building new synapses. What you do post-exercise is essential in reaping the full benefits of your activity. So too is what you consume. Always remember to rehydrate and eat something good for you. By following the above, you will not only be stimulating the mind but you will also feel great. Healthway recommendation for good health: - 30 minutes (adults) or 60 minutes (children) of physical activity every day of the week. Located at Gibbons Road, Davenport, for further information on inline skating at The Rink, call 9725 6999 or visit www.therink.com.au for general skating and class times. 38

Golf Tips

with Craig Tapp

Hi everyone, I hope you are all driving long and straight and holing many putts. One of my students recently dropped in an old 1950’s black and white movie called Follow the Sun. It’s an amazing movie that follows the career of the legendary Ben Hogan. Well-known actors Glen Ford and Anne Baxter play the Hogan’s but the fascinating thing about it is that there’s plenty of real life footage of Ben Hogan himself along with many of the famous professionals of the time, including Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead and Dr Cary Middlecoff. And, after carefully watching the swing of these great players, I was fascinated to see that over 60 years later the basics of the game have hardly changed. Anyone that has worked on their game with me knows that I always try to keep the game as simple as possible by working on 3 main areas:• You must have a good set up or posture to allow the body and arms to work correctly. • It is the clubface that ultimately hits the ball so this must be as neutral as possible. (The clubface has approximately 5 times more influence on the ball than the swing path). • The pivot should lead the golf swing. Watching the film, I was amazed by these great players from the past and how simply they swing the club. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised as I always remember Jack Nicklaus being asked if Tiger Woods was the best ball striker he had seen. Jack commented, “Nowhere near as good as Ben Hogan.” Watching this old footage really brought home to me that the classic champion players, such as Hogan, Sneed, Nicklaus, Player, Sarazen, Woods, (we will also throw in Australia’s best ever player …. no not Greg Norman….no not Peter Thompson but Karrie Webb), all have very simple and similar techniques. Hogan has

often been quoted as saying that one of the key components to his repeatable swing was that the pivot or turning of the belly button started the golf swing; something that all the champion players do. When on the range, I often show impact positions to my students on an iPad and approximately 90% have the right foot flat at impact and very little pivot rotation through impact. If you want to perform better, I suggest go online, find footage from some of the great players and watch how they really fire their pivot through impact. Of course, there are many factors that affect the flight of the ball, including swing plane, angle of attack, clubface position in relation to the swing path, and the solidness and position of the hit on the clubface. However, for more consistent results, keep it simple, have good posture and neutral clubface and let the pivot lead the golf swing. Good luck and good golfing!

It was in 2006 that Mercedes-Benz first revealed its luxury, full-sized SUV, the GL. Taking its design influences from its smaller sibling, the M-Class, the GL also paid homage to the iconic G-Class or ‘G-Wagon’ not sold in Australia for some time but occasionally seen as an import. Seven years on and hot on the heels of the launch of the new A-Class, Mercedes-Benz has reaffirmed that, although it is now developing an impressive range of smaller cars, large, luxury vehicles are of equal importance to the

Capable of completing 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, with its lighter body shell, fuel consumption is a class-leading combined 7.7 litres per 100km. Put this in context and the standard GL is basically capable of out-accelerating a typical Australian family car whilst using less fuel in the process! Not bad for a car that weighs in around 2,500kg! Next are the 2 petrol engine options, beginning with the 4633cc V8 GL500 BlueEFFICIENCY. This produces 300kW and 600 Nm of torque, blasting from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, whereas the blistering GL63 AMG with its 5.5 litre V8, delivering 410kW and 760Nm of torque, tears from 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Big, bold and luxurious, the GL offers performance, comfort and style with highly impressive fuel consumption figures to boot. All in all, it’s a winning formula. BMW 4 Series Coupé

Bavarian beast let off the leash!

As one of the most eagerly awaited models from German powerhouse BMW in recent memory, the new 4 Series Coupé has already been creating quite a stir. A straight replacement for the 3 Series Coupé, a move intended to differentiate it from the 3-Series sedans and realign it with its 2-door 6 Series sibling, the 4 Series Coupé sees the luxury car maker seriously flexing its sporting muscles. Coupés have always been about style and at first glance, there is no denying that the new 4 Series Coupé delivers this in spades. Longer and wider than the outgoing model, the 4 Series Coupé’s more muscular and purposeful design gives the car a dynamic yet wonderfully elegant appearance. Exterior features “a dynamic yet have clearly been designed wonderfully elegant to highlight the car’s sporting pedigree and the appearance” large, wide air-intake in the front apron cleverly accentuates the coupé’s increased width. A gently sloping roofline provides a sweeping, curvy silhouette and flared rear wheel arches give the car a more planted stance. Available down under in 3 different guises, all models are powered by BMW TwinPower turbo engines renowned for combining exhilarating power with excellent fuel economy. Entry point to the range is the 420d Coupé fitted with a 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 135kW of power and 380Nm of torque. Capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds, fuel consumption is rated at an incredibly low 4.6L per 100km. Next up, the 428i Coupé comes with a 4-cylinder petrol engine developing 180kW of power and 350Nm of torque. This vehicle sprints from 44

0-100km/h in just 5.8 seconds while still managing to consume only 6.4L of fuel per 100km on the combined cycle. At the top of the range the blistering 435i Coupé with its TwinPower turbo in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine blasts its way from 0-100km/h in just 5.1 seconds yet still manages impressive fuel consumption and emissions figures of just 7.4L per 100km and 171g/km of CO2 respectively. As you would expect from BMW, the list of standard equipment in the 4 Series Coupé is also mighty impressive. The entry level 420d Coupé comes complete with 6 airbags, Active Protection, a rear view camera, Bi-Xenon headlights with auto headlight control and rain sensor as well as an anti-dazzle interior

rear-view mirror. Inside, comfort is assured with the 2-zone automatic climate control system, leather upholstery and full electric sports seats. A 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, USB connection and BMW navigation system also feature as standard. Volkswagen Amarok

Award-winning ute continues to thrive

Launched into the Australian market in early 2011 with a plan to shake up the booming Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sector, over 2 years on, VW’s tough no-nonsense ute continues to win plenty of admirers (and buyers). The first big volume ute from a German brand to be sold in Australia and the first to be sold down under with a five star ANCAP safety rating, the Amarok quickly found favour with its combination of muscular looks and chunky styling coupled with its plush, luxurious cabin. As VW’s first foray into the pick-up market, it was clear that no stone had been left unturned. Tough and capable on any surface, the Amarok featured a practical, roomy dual-cab option with plenty of ground clearance to tackle the rough stuff. And, as you would expect on a VW, safety levels were high with ABS, ESP, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control all fitted as standard together with the VW 4Motion AWD system that enabled drivers to switch between 2WD and 4WD at the touch of a button. Initially available with the new VW TDI400 engine, a 2 litre, 16-valve, four-cylinder diesel with six-speed manual gearbox that delivered 120kW at 4000rpm, the vehicle towed effortlessly with 400Nm available between 1500 and 2000rpm. It also delivered impressive economy rates with a combined fuel economy figure of around 7.9 litres/100km and just 208g/km of CO2 emissions. Just over 12 months later and the range was significantly expanded. Added to the range were 2 diesel options, a four-cylinder 90kW/340Nm and four-cylinder 132kW/420Nm (auto only) together with a 2

litre 118kW/300Nm turbo petrol variant. A single cab version of the Amarok also hit the showrooms. Next came the brand new auto Amarok. Fitted with an eight-speed ZF torque converter box designed to better suit off-road demands, the new transmission upped the Amarok’s braked towing ability with new models now able to haul weights of up to 3000kg. The eight-speed auto box was the first for this market segment and featured a crawler first gear, ideal for negotiating steep off-road inclines, followed by a spread of ratios through to an overdrivestyle 8th gear set up for economical highway cruising at around 110km/h. Delivering lower running costs and improved on and off-road performance, the new auto Amarok’s unique mix of toughness and refinement added extra appeal to an already compelling package. So what’s next for the Amarok? Well, according to Philip Clark, Volkswagen Australia’s director of commercial vehicles, the Amarok range will continue to offer new products each year for the foreseeable future. Exciting times indeed for this award-winning ute! For more information on the Volkswagen Amarok or to arrange a test drive, contact Barbagallo Volkswagen Mandurah on 9587 9999 or visit their showroom at 140 Pinjarra Road. 52

Investing in Property By Murray Blakers Before you make a final decision on your next investment property make sure you get qualified advice on the best tax structure and the most suitable finance options. Also, ensure you investigate all available government cash benefits and rebates. The right financial product, the correct tax structure and ongoing cash rebates can make a huge difference to the financial outcome for property investors.

“Right now, and for the next five years or so, property in the major cities in Australia will become the hottest investment class you can possible think of.” (Mark Bouris, Yellow Brick Road, September 2013)

Government Incentives and Subsidies Currently, some Australian states provide cash incentives at settlement to purchasers (including investors) of new properties. When you are ready to invest make sure that you check the current offerings available in each state. The most effective offering currently available for investors is a joint federal and state (all states) government scheme that provides certain property investors with up to $140,000 tax free over ten years. This scheme was introduced in 2008 to help reduce the rent payable by key workers within the community, such as police officers, nurses, childcare workers, paramedics, teachers, fire-fighters and other critical community members. The net effect for property investors is strong positive cash flow from day one, around $7,000 per year net in your pocket. For an average 58

Artist Review

Margot Wiburd

Margot Wiburd has recently been awarded and begun a twelve month Artist in Residency as part of the annual Residency Program offered to emerging artists by INQB8.mandurah Centre for Contemporary Art (INQB8). Margot has been local to Mandurah since 2004 and sees the residency as an opportunity to relaunch her art practice after a health setback three years ago. Defining her past, Wiburd achieved her Bachelor of Fine Art degree (at RMIT, Melbourne) in Gold & Silversmithing, and then worked with arthouse film director, Paul Cox for the next 17 years. During this time, she researched and raised sponsorship to attend France’s Ecole Albert deFois, where she undertook rigorous classical oil painting studies under the guidance of Master American painter Ted Seth Jacobs, who practices a self created style called Restructured Realism. Back in Melbourne, Wiburd exhibited in a Collins Street gallery - Art Gallery Eden - before and after attending a 10 week painting residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. In 2000 she was awarded the year long Malaysia-Australia Visual Artist Residency in Malaysia, which featured a major exhibition upon the residency’s conclusion. During this residency her work developed from a practiced, more traditional style into the kind of large scale pastel work and contemporary still life art she now favours and plans to explore further during her INQB8 residency. Wiburd explains her art as “a response and counterbalance to the speed and cacophony of an infinitely complex world, where life can become an endless attack

on the senses, where urban housing is becoming smaller and tighter, rooms shrinking in size, space at a premium.” Her work “explores the absence of noise and clutter, the notion of breathing space and the beauty of stillness through the metaphor of still life.” The INQB8 Residency challenge she has set herself is to expand her use of media in a way that will attempt to preserve the soft, velvety quality achieved with pastels, while making the work viable for corporate display without framing under glass. She will also explore the inclusion of photographic elements into her work, and a broadening of subject matter. Her studio challenge is to work on fragile large scale pastel drawings and oil paintings, often assembled as triptychs and larger groups of panels. The large white walls and space of a studio, together with a highly supportive environment, will provide a much valued, dedicated space conducive to the development of her work. Visits to Margot Wiburd at the studio are welcome and can be made by appointment through the gallery.

Photography with Kelly Doye

Photographing wildflowers With the wildflower season upon us, now is the perfect time to brush up on your photography skills whilst making the most of our unique environment. Use the following tips to help you get the most out of your wildflower photo sessions.

Tip 1 Always look for new blooms that are intact and newly flowering. Plants that have been nibbled on by insects or that have dying flowers make for fairly average photos.

Tip 2 Fill the frame! Get up close and personal with the plants and use just one or two flowers as the main focus. Photographing the whole bush often leads to a lack of detail. Alternatively, if there is a mass of colour from different plants, look for an interesting viewpoint to show off the colours by taking a landscape-style photo. Look for colour and texture contrasts in close up work.

Tip 5 Be patient! Wait for the wind to stop blowing or the light to move. If the shot is not quite what you want, wait for it to be. Take a few deep breaths and enjoy nature!

Tip 6 Pay attention to detail with focusing planes. Work out which part of the flower is the main focus and concentrate on ensuring that the area is in focus. Use your knowledge of aperture to select the correct effect. F22 if you want more of the shot in focus, F2.8 if you only want to focus on a specific detail.

Tip 3 Plan for the best light as harsh shadows detract from the image detail. Early morning or late afternoons are the best times of day and don’t let a bit of rain put you off! Taking photos when the light is more even creates less shadow and little droplets of water can add to the interest of the photo. You could also create your own rain with a small spray bottle.

Tip 7 Move dead grasses, leaves or anything obscuring the image out of the way. However, don’t pick them or break stems. Leave the environment as found or you may disturb a delicate ecosystem without realising it. Move ... cont. pg 70

Tip 4 Look for something that makes your wildflower stand out. Insects, bees, butterflies and spiders can all add extra impact to a shot. 68

art & photography the viewpoint if you cannot move an object. Eliminate distracting backgrounds by shooting upwards into a blue sky to create extra interest.

Tip 8 Experiment with different lenses and equipment. Wide angle lenses help to ensure everything in the photo is in sharp detail. 200mm lenses will give a sharp focus with a blurred background. Try a macro lens for really effective close up detail. For those on a budget, try a close-up filter or diopter, essentially a magnifying glass that screws onto the front of the lens like a filter. Use a diffuser to make light

soft and even over the entire photo. Reflectors can also be used to bounce light into dark areas and bring out detail. Use a small tripod for stability when shooting in awkward places.

Eyecare

with Elite Eyewear

Understanding cataracts Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 years of age and the principal cause of blindness in the world. There are actually more cases of cataracts worldwide than glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined.

that surrounds the central nucleus.

How are cataracts treated? A cataract may often need no treatment in the early stages except for a change in the spectacle prescription. Currently there is no medication available, such as eye drops or exercises that can cause the cataract to diminish. Instead, cataracts are removed surgically and a replacement plastic lens implanted in the eye. This is called an IOL (intra optical lens).

What is a cataract? A cataract is a cloudy or opaque area found in the normally transparent lens of the eye. As the opacity thickens it prevents light rays from passing through the lens and focusing on the retina. Signs and symptoms include blurred vision, light sensitivity, an increase in nearsightedness, double vision in a single eye, difficulty with night vision and frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription.

Can cataracts be prevented? Recent studies show people living at high altitude or those spending considerable time in the sun will be at higher risk. Also, smokers are at risk of developing cataracts earlier than non-smokers. A number of studies have suggested that taking certain nutrients or nutritional supplements may reduce the risk. A high dietary intake of vitamin E (prevalent in sunflower seeds, almonds and spinach) and antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin C and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, has been suggested. The above information was supplied by Elite Eyewear, suppliers of personal eye care and eyewear for the Peel Region. Visit them in Pinjarra at Shop 12B, Pinjarra Junction, or at 7/6 Baroy Street, Falcon.

How many different types of cataracts are there? There are 3 main types of cataracts:Subcapsular cataracts are associated with diabetes, steroid taking and smoking. These occur at the back of the lens. Nuclear cataracts form in the nucleus of the lens and are usually associated with ageing. Cortical cataracts begin in the periphery of the lens and work their way to the centre. They occur in the lens cortex, the part of the lens 71

Introducing ... Mesoestetic Stem Cell

Reduce the signs of ageing!

Stem cell treatments are all the rage in skincare and the Mesoestetic Stem Cell solution is one of the latest anti-ageing systems to hit the market. Using a powerful combination of professional and home maintenance skincare treatments, the system helps stimulate, repair and protect the skin as well as fighting the most common signs of ageing – deep wrinkles and skin elasticity. Designed for those in their 30’s and 40’s, the system includes a total of five salon treatments and three home maintenance products all designed to strengthen, enhance and revitalise. Combining plant stem cells and growth factors, the range recommends salon treatments take place every 7 to 10 days accompanied by the weekly use of a restructuractive serum, active growth factor 24-hour cream and nanofiller lip contour cream. This comprehensive approach to skincare nourishes the skin, giving it the healthy boost it requires. Much of the success of the treatment relies on the diligent home care programme. Each of the three take-home products exhibits high concentrations of active ingredients and it’s the combination of both stem cells and

growth factors that differentiates this range from others on the market. While each take-home product includes plant stem cells extract, it’s the restructuractive serum that holds the highest concentration. Packaged in five 3ml ampoules, this ultra-concentrated serum needs to be applied once a week at night, directly after cleansing. To achieve the best results, ingredients must be delivered deep into the skin’s external layers. In the salon, treatments use a crystal fibre mask to increase the absorption of the product into the epidermis. This boosts skin health and triggers adult stem cell proliferation. As well as general use, it is also possible to integrate the stem cell treatment into a long term management plan alongside other skincare treatments, such as chemical peels, IPL or skin needling treatments. The Mesoestetic Stem Cell system is now available in Mandurah at Total Skin and Body Centre Day Spa. For further information, call 9535 4530 or visit them at Unit 2/2A, Peel Street (next to the Atrium Hotel).

Dr Harvey’s Clinic Part 3

Dermal Fillers Growing older and wiser may have its advantages but the natural ageing process has never been kind to the face. As we age, an increasing number of superficial lines will appear, including lateral smile lines, top lip lines, forehead lines and, of course, crow’s feet. Wrinkle fillers or dermal fillers, however, can offer a highly effective solution to these increasing lines. The most commonly used fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring polysaccharide (sugar substance) that is prevalent both in our skin and other parts of the body. As the most important space-filling substance in the body, by holding water it keeps our collagen hydrated and our skin fuller and more youthful. The successes provided by dermal fillers continue to grow with the increasing amount of research and development now being focused into this area. And exciting news is that Allergan, the world’s largest producer of anti-ageing injectables, has recently released a pair of brand new, longer-lasting fillers onto the market. Both these are fillers are currently available at our clinic and results have been impressive. These new fillers Volbella and Volift contain Vycross ™, a unique patented technology that uses an innovative hyaluronic acid gel. As well

as offering more natural, longer-lasting results, there is also minimal swelling and a reduced risk of bruising. Volbella is mainly used for around the lips and eyes with results lasting up to 12 months. This is almost double the length of time of the previous Allergan product and what’s more, with the reduced risk of bruising and swelling, it’s even possible to return to work the same day. Volift is used in the folds around the mouth and effects can last for up to 15 months! Like its sister product, there is a considerably reduced risk of clumping leading to smoother and more natural results, again with less swelling. Providing a highly versatile option for patients, the product is perfect for those seeking a discreet look and feel. Dr Harvey Sacks is dedicated to the advancement and teaching of best practice cosmetic medicine. Understanding‌ Kinesiology Prevalent in both complementary medicine and natural medicine, kinesiology therapy uses muscle monitoring to identify imbalances in the body’s structural or emotional energy. This therapy focuses on addressing unresolved stress reactions by using techniques that assist the body’s natural healing process. A fundamental assumption of kinesiology is that the human body has inherent healing energy but sometimes needs assistance to achieve the required state. The key benefit of the therapy is the ability of the practitioner to directly access the limbic brain function. It is here, within the limbic brain, that certain behaviours are developed in reaction to an overwhelming experience, hurt or trauma. When this original trauma is cleared and the emotional reaction that accompanies

it is controlled, patients are able to experience new choices and actions. Effective in treating a number of different issues connected to our well-being, kinesiology achieves success in a wide variety of areas including stress relief, muscular and nervous disorders, emotional challenges and learning and behavioural difficulties. By locating and clearing the feeling of trauma that originally caused the person to either shut down or go into self-defence mode (often shown through both anger and bravado), the conscious mind is awoken to new possibilities and they experience a feeling of rejuvenation and a renewed enthusiasm for life.

Restaurant Review

OK, so time for lunch! Well, to be fair we were a bit spoilt! With the team keen for us to try a few different dishes we were served up a selection of current favourites in true tasting plate style. With all dishes available on the recently released new menu it was the perfect way to sample some of the delights on offer. Our lunch included a fabulously fresh Roasted Beetroot, Feta and Candied Walnut Salad, a delightfully light Lemon Pepper Calamari served with tartar sauce, a tasty portion of Beer Battered Flathead Fillets and Chips, and The Coffee Club’s own take on the classic Le Croque-Monsieur. Our favourite was the fantastic Salmon and Avocado Stack, a dish served with a poached cage-free egg on toasted ciabatta. Perfect for breakfast or lunch, this comes highly recommended – it’s a must-try! To finish with, we chose a slice of Gooey Caramel and Butterscotch Cheesecake served with cream and a dollop of vanilla ice-cream. Wonderful! And while we tucked in, we were able to sample a Chocolate Thickshake and a delicious chocolate-flavoured Original Iced Coffee. Yes, the coffee is great but at The Coffee Shop, the food is also quite exceptional. Freshly prepared and reasonably priced, it’s not only the coffee that’s drawing in the crowds, it’s the superb food too! Impeccably run by Manager Cush and the duty managers, expect locals and visitors alike to continue to come flooding through the doors!

The Coffee Club Mandurah

With over 300 stores across Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, New Caledonia and China, The Coffee Club is a huge, home-grown success story. Distinguishable by its unmistakeable black and white logo and stylish, contemporary interiors, the great news for local coffee aficionados is this thriving brand has now finally arrived in Mandurah. The Mandurah Life decided to pay a visit and find out what all the fuss is about! The Coffee Club Mandurah might only have been open a matter of weeks but on arrival it was clear word has spread fast. Located inside the Mandurah Forum Shopping Centre, the new store is cleverly located next to one of the main entrances, clearly visible from the car park. Not surprising then that over lunch, business was brisk. Offering an impressive array of coffees, teas and chilled drinks, the menu at The Coffee Club also features no shortage of tempting dishes. From healthy breakfast options to its famous all day breakfasts, from kids’ meals to all day favourites, from sandwiches and wraps to fresh salads, there is something here to suit all tastes and appetites. What’s more, if you are worried about your waistline each dish lists the exact calorie count contained within it. What a neat idea!

Spring Recipe Salmon ďŹ shcakes

Salmon is a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals and it also provides us with omega 3, a much needed fatty acid. Not only are these salmon fishcakes nutritious but they are incredibly delicious too. They make a perfectly light, spring lunch for the whole family. They can even be shaped into fish fingers for children. Makes 8 - 10

Ingredients approx. 600g cooked salmon (can be tinned boneless and skinless) approx. 400g cooked and mashed white potatoes 1 tbsp chopped parsley 1 tbsp chopped dill 1 tsp grated lemon zest 1 tsp chopped capers freshly ground salt and pepper 2 tbsp plain flour 2 eggs, beaten 150g dried breadcrumbs 4 tbsp oil

Method Roughly mash salmon together in a large bowl while retaining sizeable flakes of fish. Mix in the parsley and dill, grated lemon zest and capers. Season with salt and pepper. Shape the mixture into cakes about 2cm thick. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for at least an hour to firm up. Place the flour, eggs and breadcrumbs in 3 separate dishes. Dip the fishcakes in the flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip the fishcakes into the egg and, lastly, the breadcrumbs. Make sure the edges are covered with breadcrumbs too. Heat the oil in a large pan over a medium-low heat. Fry the fishcakes for 3 to 4 minutes on each side to get a golden brown colour. Drain the fishcakes on paper towel. Serve with green beans or a salad, lemon wedges and tartare sauce.
