Add style and warmth to the wardrobe

embellishments or printed animals. They look great teamed with a midi skirt or narrow cropped pants. Add a pair of ankle boots to the skirt or loafers to the pants.

Moving away from the cocoon shape of last winter, this year’s coats are being cinched in at the waist with a casual tie at the front or a statement belt. The coat doesn’t have to meet in the middle and the belt or tie will look effortlessly cool in a contrasting colour or texture. It’s a feminine silhouette that produces a strong look. Also, look out for wraps in the form of huge blanket scarves, the bigger the better, in oversized Sass & Fate at Love To Be check and plaid prints.

The slimline pant is a mainstay for men this winter with legs cropped around the ankle and layers worn on top to create a bulkier top half.

And, as a contrast, relaxed track-style pants will link in with the sport luxe trend. For sweaters, the rollneck jumper in a fine knit looks great with either type of pant. And not going anywhere fast is the check print – in any size or format – and not only for sweaters, for coats too. Keep extra warm outside by wearing jackets that feature the quilting effect, which is set to be a very popular look for jackets, either in a slim cut or in a baseball style.

This winter, covering up will be an absolute joy! With so many fabulous looks to choose from, take inspiration from the new season’s trends and embrace the cooler weather.

This season, a wearable look for everyone is sport luxe. This athletic trans-seasonal trend gets revamped throughout the year and this winter, it centres on soft greys and nudes. Tops with sheer, PVC or even tweed panels add the glamour to a pair of slimline stretch pants or track pants. A quilting effect is very popular on pants, skirts and tops too and will look great on a fabric bomber jacket to finish off the look. For feet, add a pair of sneakers – slip-on’s, laced or midrise.

Pale pink goes perfectly with greys and, although normally a spring or summer colour, it promises to be huge this season. Winter coats look incredibly soft and dreamy in this pastel shade and are quite a diversion from the usual black.

Looking for warm comfort often means snuggling up in oversized roomy knits. Long and lean jumpers as well as waterfall and boyfriend cardigans do the job very nicely. Going for fine knits means you can layer too without looking bulky.

Design For The Home The Kitchen

It’s the attention to detail that ultimately makes a kitchen renovation a success. After the basic layout has been decided upon and the functionality of the space has been maximised, the fun can really start and decisions can be made about those special finishing touches.

For renovations over $20K, stone benchtops are a must inclusion in today’s modern kitchen.

Negotiate and try to get a good price on securing a deeper thickness of stone. 40mm edges look so much more impressive than 20mm, allowing the benchtops themselves to create a striking feature in the room.

Remember to make space in the budget for flooring. If a new cabinet layout has been chosen for the kitchen, there might be gaps in the original flooring. Patching up gaps, particularly when dealing with tiled floors, can often disrupt the look and flow of a new kitchen. Instead, swallow the cost, invest in a new floor and see it as an opportunity to add a new dimension to the room. Consider a lighter, darker or warmer colour, and consider also a different type of floor covering. Vinyl planking is very popular currently as it is easily cut to fit any space, is easy to repair and comes in many 24

different finishes and colours. If the kitchen is part of an open plan area, think about linking the kitchen to the rest of the living space by continuing the new flooring throughout.

Clean lines and simple design help to make a kitchen look effortlessly grand. Consider how the usual, day-to-day clutter, such as remote controls, shopping lists, keys etc., could be stashed away in a drawer or cupboard that has been specifically added to the kitchen for that very purpose. Don’t spoil the clean lines of an imposing stone benchtop with clutter.

When it comes to lighting, don’t just plump for the usual ceiling downlights and row of feature lights over the island. Give thought to a spectacular pendant light and add strip LED lighting, mains or battery operated, under wall cabinets so that benchtops are well lit for food preparation.

Finally, carefully plan the location of power points. Thinking about where everyday items, such as the kettle or toaster, will need to be plugged in is an obvious but necessary consideration but also spend time contemplating where laptops, tablets or phones could be charged and made inconspicuous. This could be via pop-up power points in the island benchtop or within a drawer.

Meet James Hoolahan

In this edition, we talk to James Hoolahan, owner of Merlin Cabinets, specialists in the design and manufacture of luxury kitchens. Originally based in Rafferty Road, Mandurah, in February 2012 the company relocated to larger premises in Thornborough Road and installed a new luxury kitchen showroom.

When did you start Merlin Cabinets and what was your background before the business?

I started Merlin Cabinets in January 2005 with just myself and one apprentice. I had previously worked as a joiner in the UK plus had also gained valuable experience working in various areas of the timber and furniture industry around Europe. The intention has always been to grow the business to become a leading operator in Mandurah and the surrounding areas and we now have a team of eight. This team includes designers, tradesmen and apprentices, providing what we believe is a unique service to the Peel region and beyond.

What are the key areas that Merlin Cabinets specialises in?

We specialise in creating luxurious functional kitchens, making best use of the current technology in the industry. Our design process focuses on practical storage solutions as well as visual appeal. Custom cabinets are made to fit each individual project instead of using standard size cabinets.

How has the industry changed since you started the business?

New technology is always being introduced into our industry especially with the storage hardware that is now available. Full extension draw systems are now a must in any modern kitchen along with easily accessible food storage zones. Stone tops are now more popular than ever and certainly more

affordable than a few years ago.

What are the current trends in kitchen design?

Current trends we are seeing in kitchen design include high gloss doors, particularly in white and in some timber grain colours. Engineered stone benchtops with under-mount sinks and handle free kitchens with aluminium or stainless steel recess rails are also popular.

Electronic servo assisted draw units from manufacturers like Blum, and LED lighting are popular features too.

Have you introduced any new machinery or design technology into the business recently?

We have always been a business that has strived to keep up to date with developments in the market and this has been reflected with our recent purchase of a new CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine. This has not only speeded up our manufacturing process but also allowed our team more time to concentrate on design and installation.

What are you views on future innovations in kitchen design?

I believe technology will continue to improve and increasingly play a major part in our industry. With companies like Blum continuing to spend huge amounts of money researching new ideas and design improvements, there’s an exciting future ahead. We find trends tend to go in cycles and with new textures and finishes being developed all of the time, who knows what the next trend will be!

Traditionally designed with relaxation in mind, décor within bedrooms can run the risk of appearing overly safe and bland. However, through clever use of colour, texture and statement pieces it’s possible to contribute to, rather than detract from, a peaceful ambience.

For bed linen, throws and accessories, rather than going for a safe neutral colour, choose strong deep colours, such as greys, navy and ocean colours, in varying textures. These will give depth to the room and help create a sumptuous, luxurious feel. Fresh, lighter neutrals can be swapped for summer months.

Place an oversized rug under the bed and even more opulence, as well as comfort, is created, making the room feel beautifully indulgent.

When it comes to furniture, don’t always fall into the trap of going for matching pieces. On the contrary, having pieces that complement each other can be far more effective, bringing personality to the room. For example, a heavy wooden sleigh bed, a stand out feature of a bedroom, looks great with mirrored bedside tables or an antique dressing table.

Other popular ideas for bedside tables are rustic wooden stools, simple glass side tables, old chests and unique little tables from antique fairs and flea markets.

If space allows, then an oversized armchair or chaise longue creates the perfect opportunity for reading or quiet contemplation. It also adds a boudoir feel, which is very popular in bedroom décor currently.

As with fashion right now, juxtaposing different prints together for fabric and wallpaper is also a popular and effective look.

Interest and more depth are injected into the room. To make it really work, opt for prints of varying sizes and stick to one colour palette, or make sure that one particular colour dominates through all the prints.

When it comes to lighting, it is important to have many different light sources in the bedroom rather than just one so that a softer mood can be achieved. It might be one of Australia’s fastest growing cities but Mandurah still offers plenty of choice for those looking to live a more rural-style life on a larger block. The choice throughout the region is broad and land is still available at extremely affordable prices.

For those looking for privacy yet still wanting to live close to the city centre there are a number of options worth looking at. Parklands, 4km to the north east of Mandurah, is a little more undulating than most of the flatter areas around the outskirts of Mandurah and some of the properties here offer delightful coastal and easterly hills views. Mostly consisting of 5 acre blocks, some feature very big homes while others offer more typical 4 bedroom 2 bathroom dwellings. A favourite area for those who wish to keep animals but want to live in close proximity to town, the area is also close to the freeway for Perth and Bunbury, private schools, the beach and golf courses.

Barragup to the east of Mandurah, towards Pinjarra, is just 7km from the town centre.

Located on the north side of Pinjarra Road, this area offers easy access to all amenities whilst offering similar qualities to Parklands. Here, land is mainly flat with many properties backing onto peaceful lakes with their abundance of birds and wildlife. On the south side of Pinjarra Road, Furnissdale offers similar terrain to Barragup with estuary frontages available on many properties. For those dreaming of coastal acreage, travel south 20km along Old Coast Road past Falcon and Dawesville to Bouvard, Lake Clifton, Armstrong Hills and Tuart Grove. Here the land is hilly and there is a great range of 5 acre, 7 acre, 10 acre and, in some cases, 25 acres of beautiful undulating countryside with big old Tuart trees and peppermint trees. This is where the birds sing their morning call and the kangaroos run free with the area enjoying fabulous views over the Peel inlet and the ocean. Who’s Got Your Super?

If I asked someone which bank they were with, I would expect the answer to include the bank’s name, address and possibly even the name of the manager. If I asked the same person how much money they had in their account right now, I would expect a reasonable estimate would be given.

However, somewhat worryingly, if I asked the same questions about superannuation, I would expect most people to get a little vague. They often can’t name the fund, don’t know the balance, don’t know who manages the fund and don’t know what the money is invested in.

Yet typically, the balance of the superannuation account would be higher than the balance within the bank account!

After many years in practice, I believe there are 2 main reasons why we don’t take a greater interest in our superannuation. Firstly, the money is mostly tied up until we retire. When we are in our twenties, retirement is as long as 45 years away. What good is that to those looking to buy a first home or to those planning an around-the-world holiday?! Secondly, those statements that arrive in the mail do nothing to help increase interest in super. Terms like “Preserved”, “Taxed”, “Untaxed”, “Restricted” and “Concessional” are legally required terms but they are hardly helpful. Then there is the industry jargon that has meanings only able to be defined in the back of thick product disclosure statements. Terms like “Capital Secure”, “Growth” and “Balance” will have different meanings for each fund. It’s enough to make most of us drop the annual super statements into a file and forget them!

If there is one gem of information that I have learned from over 30 years of working in finance and accounting, it is this, “The difference between success and failure is often

just 1% and if you don’t manage your money, someone else will take that 1% off you.”

The compounding effect of that 1 or 2 % over the life of a superannuation fund can make a significant difference to the closing balance.

When was the last time a bank rang to say that you should change to a different account? One, for example, that offered lower fees or paid higher interest. Don’t expect the superfund manager to call up to tell you that the product you have is out of date and that the management fees are too high. Or that when you signed up for the policy 20 years ago, the policy had a 4% commission paid to the adviser.

There are ways to take control over super.

Having lots of different funds can mean higher fees and multiple life insurance policies eating away at the balance. There are super products in the market that are low cost and make it simple to manage. Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF’s) are becoming increasingly popular for investors who want to take full control and invest in assets like property or shares. Remember though, before making any decisions, take time to understand the options available and seek professional advice.

Mercedes Benz GLA

Eagerly awaited compact SUV arrives

With sales in the luxury compact SUV market continuing to boom, it’s no surprise to see the world’s leading luxury car manufacturer eager for a piece of the action.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is the German giant’s answer to the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Range Rover Evoque and whilst it has been marketing a similar sized model in Europe in left handdrive for a while (the GLK), the all new GLA has a distinct personality all of its own.

Aimed primarily at the buyer looking for a versatile, family hatchback-sized model with a slightly higher driving position, the front-wheel drive GLA takes its influences from the recently launched all-new A-Class, although as Mercedes points out, this is a car not only at home on the road but off-road too with its added capabilities.

Currently, there are 3 versions available in the GLA line-up, all fitted with Eco start-stop and direct fuel injection. The entry level model, the 200 CDI, comes with a 2.1 litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 100kW of power and 300Nm of torque. Available with 7-speed automatic transmission, standard equipment includes ABS, Active Parking Assist and Blind Spot Assist, Bi-xenon fixed headlamps, 18-inch alloys, electric exterior mirrors, a reversing camera, dual-zone climatic control and Bluetooth connectivity.

With fuel consumption at just 4.6 litres per 100kms and a price tag of under $50,000, it’s well-appointed, efficient and affordable.

Next up is the GLA 250, fitted with all-wheel drive. Featuring a 2.0 litre turbo-powered petrol engine with 7-speed automatic transmission,

producing 155kW of power and 350Nm of torque, fuel consumption is again impressive at just 7 litres per 100kms. Finally, expected later in the year is the ferocious AMG version, the GLA 45. This super-tuned variant is forecast to deliver a huge 265kW of power and 450Nm of torque, powering its way from 0-100km/h in just 4.8 seconds.

BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupé Thrilling high performance siblings hit town!

Launched in the early 1970’s, BMW’s legendary high performance M (Motorsport) division has had motoring enthusiasts salivating over its steady stream of sports tuned vehicles for over 4 decades. Originally established to handle BMW’s racing programme, the division then moved to offer high-performance versions of BMW’s road cars and over the years almost every BMW model, apart from the 7-series and X-series, has received the special M treatment.

Synonymous with the very latest technology and delivering refined, razor-sharp dynamics

outgoing M3, both models tear from 0-100 km/h in a remarkable 4.1 seconds. What’s more, despite this huge increase in performance, the latest engine achieves a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent.

Golf Tips

Hi, everyone! Hope you are playing well and holing lots of putts.

Are you one of those golfers that hits the ball really well on the range or in practice rounds but plays horribly when it counts? If you have a weird sense of humour and want to have a giggle, come down to Meadow Springs driving range. Position yourself on the seat towards the right hand side of the range and you can watch the players warm up on the range before watching their tee shots on the first hole. You will hear talk about the latest new razzle-dazzle driver they have bought and often see an athletically smooth swing hitting long drives that hang in the air forever and roll right to the back of the driving range.

“Today is the day” and “What’s the course record?” is the talk. However, this is where the fun really starts.

On the first tee, suddenly the smooth athletic swings are replaced with a wild swipe at the ball that normally sees the player almost rupturing a spleen or popping a kidney. The ball normally finishes up in the bushes just to the right of the first tee box. The players, while trying to massage their lower back, can be seen shaking heads, discussing what went wrong and how can that happen.

Well, if this sounds like you, I can assure you that you are not alone. It’s possible to sit there for hours giggling at the groups as they come through.

So why does this happen? Well, everybody has swing flaws. The more swing flaws you have the more you need to compensate with your hands and body to square the club face at impact. When you are loose, relaxed and your rhythm is good, it is possible, even with a poor swing, to hit some nice golf shots. This is why these players hit nice shots on the range while warming up. As soon as there is any pressure on the shot the body naturally tenses up making it harder to compensate for the flaws.

This results in the poor shots witnessed on the first tee.

So how do we break the cycle? Put simply, the easiest way is to reduce the number of flaws in the swing. As a coach, I try to get my students playing as orthodoxly as possible and focus on five key aspects of the swing:1. Aim correctly at the target.

2. Ensure correct ball position.

3. Have good posture.

4. Achieve a neutral club face.

5. Pivot correctly with the swing turning into a balanced finished position.

If these fundamentals are in place, even with first tee jitters, there are very few compensations that need to be made to hit a consistent shot.

Now, if you are off to play golf after reading this article and don’t have time to get some help with those technical flaws, I would encourage you to firstly stay as loose as possible. Keep your arm and hand pressure as soft as you can and swing the club with as much rhythm and balance as possible. This will give you every chance to use your natural hand-eye coordination to compensate and to hopefully get the clubface back to square. It will also take a bit of pressure off these internal organs!

in wet conditions. Equipment supplied by The Rink includes the inline skates and all protective gear and tuition is available for beginner, intermediate and advanced skating levels. For multiple class bookings, a 15 minute break between classes is recommended to allow for changeover time and it is also recommended that an adult or teacher is present during classes.

After returning to Perth in 1986 to be closer to family and after another year of designing jewellery in Fremantle, he opted for a small career change. Following an exhaustive selection process, John was granted a place in the prestigious and demanding Theatre Course at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, graduating in 1989. This new career found John in big demand as an actor and voice talent, and he worked extensively in film, theatre, TV and radio. It was also during this time that he set up John Miller Design, supplying his jewellery to galleries and retail outlets around Australia and in London, Zurich, Tokyo and Portland Oregon.

In 1996, John Miller moved to Yallingup, where he built a house and recorded an album of 14 original songs, singing and playing guitar and mandolin. Gods and Angels was released in 2000 to considerable critical acclaim. And in July 2001, his new studio, Jewel of the Capes, was opened.

After over 40 years of designing and creating jewellery, John has always been true to his ethic of trying to think outside the square when designing commercial and contemporary jewellery. A deep lover of gold, silver and gemstones, his techniques have been meticulously honed over the years to a point where he is now at ease with all aspects of the media.

For inspiration, John has always looked to ancient, tribal or primitive metalwork.

Influenced heavily by the Egyptians, Mayans, Incas and Celts, he has great appreciation of the sophisticated sense of aesthetic and

Born in Perth in 1955, Yallingup-based jeweller John Miller first began making jewellery in 1973 after studying drawing and sculpture at the Claremont School of Art. After successfully introducing his eclectic silver jewellery to an enthusiastic public at silver shop Beaut Sausages on Cottesloe Beach, John then moved on to work at The Silver Nuggett in Subiaco, working alongside jewellers Monty Holst, Norman Jeppe and Penny Ward.

In 1977, John moved to Darwin to open his first retail premises Fascination Jewellery, combining his store with teaching jewellery at the Darwin Community College. During this period, John also made the silver tiara for Darwin’s inaugural Miss Bougainvillea Quest.

Two years later, after his first gem-buying mission to Sri Lanka and India, John moved to Broome. As the first jeweller to offer his services to the now billion dollar Broome pearling industry, John’s shop, Dampier’s Chest, provided Broome’s first ever selection of unique handmade jewellery, featuring Broome pearls and Australian gemstones. After another trip to the Himalayas, John returned to Broome to work as jeweller in residence at The Pearl Emporium. During this time, he had several successful exhibitions in Broome and at the Greenhill Galleries in Perth.

Ultimately, however, the love of making one-off pieces with their intrinsic artistic value is a huge motivation. John says, “This is what makes it exciting for me... it’s about the artistic journey and not going back over the same ground all the time. I try to make things that will last forever or at least a very long time! There’s not a lot I can do about people just wearing things out but the intention is there. I want people to be wondering or researching who made these things in one or two thousand years’ time.”

The casual observer will also recognise a close connection with the natural environment with flora, fauna and the local landscape ever present in John’s work. Furthermore, the Yallingup studio is completely carbon neutral with solar power and LED lighting.

John also works actively with the Margaret River Artisans Group and he is currently garnering support for an 800 seat concert hall for the community of the

Sports Photography Sports photography is generally regarded as a specialised discipline. For many sports, you’ll need a DSLR camera capable of shooting in burst mode, which is the ability to capture several frames per second (FPS). Most sports require a telephoto lens, which allows the ability to zoom in and capture the action.

70mm-200mm lenses are popular and have a good range but if you need to get in closer, a lens with a longer focal length will be required.

Using the ‘Shutter Priority Mode’ on a DSLR will allow you to manually select the shutter speed while letting the camera regulate the aperture to maintain correct exposure. To freeze action, use a high shutter speed of 1/250th and higher or, to add some motion blur, use a slower shutter speed.

Remember too, when shooting in low light or indoors, you may need to bump up the camera’s ISO. Use a tripod or monopod where possible as it stabilises the camera and 56

art & photography will prove to be invaluable when shooting with a telephoto lens or using slow shutter speeds.

You may also want to check out the camera’s focusing capabilities. Most good DSLR’s have

features, such as separate AF buttons and focus area modes, which help capture pin sharp pictures. If shooting in bursts, ensure the camera is set to shoot jpegs instead of raw ... cont. pg 58

For example, capturing the exact moment a batsman strikes a ball or perhaps the instant a swimmer rises up through a column of water and gasps for air. It could even be a surfer at the very top of a wave with the board almost completely out of the water seemingly defying gravity.

And finally, be honest when analysing your own work to see what can be improved on and don’t be afraid to try new techniques or different settings on your camera.

Experiment a little and see what works for you. More importantly, though, get out there and have some fun!

New name breathes fresh life into the Mandurah art scene Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah (CASM) is an exhibition, studio and workshop space operated by the City of Mandurah.

CASM delivers four programs; an exhibition program; a workshop program, a studio program and an education program which offer the community a variety of services to build and develop the capacity of Mandurah’s arts and culture sector.

CASM started operation in May 2011 as INQB8. mandurah Centre for Contemporary Art or INQB8 (pronounced incubate) as a structure to ‘incubate’ emerging artists and creative programs and ideas.

In February this year an opportunity for a fresh rebranding occurred, resulting in a name change to Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah or CASM. CASM is particularly suited to emerging artists and graduates due to its accessibility and central location. It supports personal artist exhibition development and partnerships with artists, arts organisations and communities by providing a low cost arts development venue, a creative and diverse workshop program and an information service for artists.

The number of artists represented by CASM has grown by more than 50 percent since 2012.

In 2013, CASM hosted nine exhibitions engaging 117 contemporary emerging and established artists consisting of 88 local artists, 13 state artists, 7 national artists and 9 international artists.

CASM will continue to lead the way in innovative engagement between the Peel creative sector and the general community.

The next 12 months will see a number of exciting projects at the venue, including four group exhibitions featuring Peel youth artists, emerging local, national and international artists and three solo exhibitions featuring Mandurah artists Dorothy Newland, Margot Wiburd and Carramar artist Jennifer Sadler.

The workshop space will support the professional development of local artist Eamon Doherty through a one month residency in June 2014, followed by weekly studio support for local artist Michael Bell.

On a weekly basis from July, CASM will continue to support local artists and arts organisations develop their independent arts practice, group or commercial activities. This includes community pastel and drawing classes with Trudi Whitcher and hosting Mandurah Artists Plus painters and Arts Culture Peel printmakers.

A DIGITAL CITY IN A CONNECTED WORLD

Dorothy newland Having worked in education for many years Dorothy Newland was finally able to realise her dream of committing to painting and to complete her Visual Arts degree when she retired from her first career. Newland is widely travelled and has been involved in many mixed exhibitions. She has held five solo exhibitions in Western Australia, with work now acquired by both private and public collections.

Currently an Artist in Residence at Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah, Newland combines her love of paint and colour with her joy in the things around her and the landscape she now lives in. Mandurah and its surrounding environs offer her constant inspiration – the rivers and the estuary, the bush, the wetlands, as well as the public gardens and her studio. She feels she never has to leave the Mandurah area for inspiration, as there is a life’s work in front of her here.

Although often described as an abstract painter, Newland’s paintings are always related to the places and things she has experienced.

Sometimes she includes some figuration, sometimes symbols which merely suggest what she is trying to capture in paint, as she is not seeking to replicate exactly what she sees, but to distil the essence of what is in front of her.

Describing her art in terms of the possibilities and wonderment of the journey, she never really knows where her paintings might take her. She feels that to have a too clearly conceived idea before beginning a work is a constraint; it is in the act of making that the subject takes form. By adding, taking away, superimposing and searching for a compelling image, a tension is set up until she achieves that moment of coherence – a balance of shape, space and

colour held in a pictorial structure that offers a different way of representing the image and widening the viewer’s perception.

“I’m always searching for a pictorial language which will allow me to convey the joy I find in my surrounds” Newland says. “Colour does it.

Luscious paint and texture does it. Not everything has to be described in detail. If a poem or a piece of music is not spelled out, it doesn’t matter. That’s how I feel about my painting”.

Newland feels her year’s residency will enable her to continue her total immersion in art; the space gives her the opportunity to work on several pieces at the same time while developing a cohesive body of work.

“I hope the enigmatic nature of my work will give the viewer cause to pause and perhaps look at the everyday in a different way”.

‘Halcyon Days’ will be launched at Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah (CASM) on Sunday 31 August at 2.30 pm with the exhibition showing from 30 August until 28 September. Dorothy will deliver an Artist Talk about her new work on Thursday 11 September at 6pm.

WEARABLE ART EXHIBITION 16 MAY - 15 JUNE 2014 Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah hosted the second Common Threads Wearable Art Exhibition throughout May and June 2014.

The exhibition was curated to reflect the showcase theme of Drift, drawing subtle colourings from beach sand and utilising props to mimick the soft rise and fall of sand dunes.

Many artworks were presented on manequins wrapped in natural hessian, while others were displayed as sculptural artworks atop gallery plynths, hung on the walls or suspended from the ceiling.

Nineteen of the thirty nine garments entered into the Common Threads Wearable Art competition were displayed, including the winning entry ‘Starry Night’ by artist Sue Seaman.

Seaman’s garment was inspired by the moon and stars drifting across the night sky and was creatively interpreted through the use of hand felted black wool on organza with appliquéd silk and thousands of hand sewn beads. Its opulent hooded cape was layered over soft lighting allowing the audience to better view the intricate patternation between the felted wool and silk materials.

Making an immediate visual impression was Deb Hiller’s ‘Flutterby’ which was dramatically suspended high above the gallery floor.

Constructed with recycled fabrics, beads buttons and deconstructed costume jewellery, the vivid orange and black butterfly created a strong exhibition centre point.

Louise Wells garment titled ‘Once’ consisted of a bodice constructed from hundreds of used

teabags stitched to resemble scales and a combination of recycled blue medical cloth and tea bags creating a balanced bell shaped skirt. The piece was inspired by times gone by when once upon a time, things would be kept, reused, recycled and treasured and was an audience Photo by Michael Kelly favourite.

The ability to view the garments at close proximity allowed visitors to intimately observe the materials, details and techniques each designer used in the garments’ creation.

Exhibited along the back walls of the gallery were hundreds of exclusive images taken by Michael Kelly from Star Creations, showing the garments with their models complete with exquisette professional makeup and hair design .

The images allowed the audience to relate more personably to the wearable art works as they provided the garments with context, adding movement and performance personalities.

Forty two images of the eleven Body Art entries were also displayed in the exhibition including the wining entry Drifting Spirits by Raelene Simpson. Simpsons work was graphically refined featuring wolves, an eagle, horses and deer meeting drifting spirits from American Indian cultural narratives.

Life’s Health Tips Slip slop slap!

It might be winter but just because the sun has lost its intense heat doesn’t mean that we should get complacent about not protecting our skin from its harmful effects. Remember, just because we can’t feel the heat of the sun doesn’t mean we are safe from the effects of its strong ultraviolet rays.

The plain facts are that although we are lucky enough to live in a fabulously warm climate, there is a downside to that. Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Almost one in two people who spend their lives here will develop some form of skin cancer and around 1600 people die each year as a result.

And remember, sunscreen alone doesn’t provide 100% protection. Sun avoidance is the only obvious answer to reduce your exposure to these harmful rays so always wear a broad rim hat and cover up where possible! However, if you do want to spend time out in the sun, the use of sunscreen is an important factor in reducing the risk of developing skin cancer and premature skin ageing.

Often, it can often be a difficult and somewhat overwhelming process to find a sunscreen to suit. With the incredibly diverse range of sunscreens on the market all promising different types of protection, it’s easy to see why!

So here are some tips on what to look for when shopping for a sunscreen.

Firstly, look for a sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients are physical blockers and are invaluable because of their ability to block both UVA and UVB rays, making the sunscreen much more effective.

Secondly, it is recommended to choose an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30+.The SPF rating measures the level of protection, so the higher the better. If used correctly, it can protect skin from about 97% of UV radiation.

Finally, once is never enough with sun protection – always buy a big bottle! Sunscreen only equates to its SPF factor if enough is applied. Makeup and moisturisers with SPF in them are great but often we don’t wear enough of it in an application for it to be at its true SPF. When wearing sunscreen, make sure it is reapplied every few hours to ensure effective coverage. For an adult, the recommended application is 5ml (approximately 1 teaspoon full) for each arm, leg, body front, body back and face (including neck and ears). That equates to a total of 35ml (approximately 7 teaspoons full) for a full body application.

And don’t forget a hat!

Relationship Healing Through Kinesiology

A holistic practice that originated in the 1960’s, kinesiology is a powerful technique that can assist us to understand and overcome problems that we bring to a relationship.

Relationships bring out the best and the worst in us and intimate relationships do this even more so. They offer the hope of strong love and fulfilment and also have the risk of providing great pain and sadness. The irony about intimacy is that we can only really access the joy of love when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable. This requires trusting yourself as well as the other person. True intimacy means risk and allowing ourselves to be wrong, to be challenged, to be open, to learn and to see our part in whatever isn’t working.

Like it or not, we all bring something!

Perfectly good relationships can go pear shaped if we don’t address and change the negative programmes and patterns that we bring to them. Unknowingly, we replay patterns in relationships that come from our past. These can often be subtle and therefore we don’t recognise them. These patterns play out because we are trying to fulfil an unmet need from our past.

For example, being too accommodating often comes from a need for approval and acceptance. Being overly independent and self-sufficient in a relationship can come from the need to protect oneself from the fear of

getting hurt. The compulsion to criticise can be repeating what we experienced as children and we now want others to somehow experience the hurt that we did – so at least someone understands! Or, perhaps we have attracted someone who is critical in order to resolve that pain. Many of these patterns succeed in pushing away the one we love most.

How do we know we are doing it? Often our partner will tell us! Other times it will just feel very familiar. Another clue is that we react automatically even when we have decided not to – it doesn’t feel like a choice.

Kinesiology is a powerful tool that can help to untangle the web of what each person brings to a relationship. It can access the subconscious mind where these programmes are held and help us to see and then shift the destructive pattern.

The ancient practice of Chinese acupuncture is based on the theory that the body is made up of Qi (pronounced chee), the life energy that exists in everybody and everything. The Qi travels along 12 primary meridians within the body and when there is balance between those meridians, health presides. When imbalances occur, due to die or lifestyle factors, the body will begin to display symptoms. By inserting fine needles into particular acupuncture points, the imbalances can be corrected and the flow of QI restored.

Research has found that treatment can be effective in treating a number of different ailments. These include digestive problems, emotional issues, including anxiety and depression, and a range of general ailments from chronic fatigue syndrome to smoking addiction, obesity and stress. Other areas such as gynaecological, neurological and respiratory problems can also be treated.

How is acupuncture performed?

Pre-sterilised disposable needles are used and treatment is completely painless as the needles are extremely fine. Once inserted, the patient may feel mild tingling around the site, warmth or heaviness, or even nothing at all.

Acupuncturists may use other techniques as well as the use of needles.

A feeling of relaxation After a session, patients generally feel relaxed and refreshed, but specific responses depend on the individual. Some feel energised while others feel sleepy and symptoms may get a little worse before they improve. The number of treatments required depends on the condition although patients usually experience a reduction in symptoms within a few sessions.

Choosing an acupuncturist Some practitioners offer acupuncture after completing a short course, however, the philosophy of acupuncture is complex, so only use a qualified acupuncturist.

Desexing Your Pet

Welcome to my regular column for The Mandurah Life.

With the National Desexing Network (NDN) holding its National Desexing Month in July, in this issue, it seemed a good opportunity to discuss the benefits of desexing pets.

There are, of course, many reasons why pet owners should consider desexing their pets.

Aside from curbing overpopulation problems, there are a number of health related, behavioural related and, finally, cost related benefits to be gained.

both animals and people. The treatment will also reduce territorial behaviour, such as marking both indoors and outdoors by urinating. Owners will also find their pets much less likely to suffer from anti-social behaviours, leading to them becoming much more friendly and affectionate and, in turn, better companions.

With the ‘heat’ cycle eliminated, female cats will lose the urge to get outside to find a mate and female dogs will avoid the unwanted attention of male dogs. Male dogs will also lose the urge to mount people’s legs.

A desexed pet will generally live a longer and healthier life. For example, females can suffer from severe physical and nutritional exhaustion if allowed to continually breed.

There is also a vastly reduced risk of getting cancer or other diseases of the reproductive organs. Common cancers include testicular cancer or prostate cancer in males or cystic ovaries and ovarian tumours in females.

Pyometra, an infection within the uterus, is particularly common in un-neutered female dogs and is a disease that can require major surgery to cure.

Unwanted puppies and kittens kept in pounds and shelters are a significant cost to the community a cost that could be easily reduced. Owners will also find significant savings on food and vet bills and will also avoid the potential costs of expensive surgeries that may be caused through accidents or fights if a pet is continually roaming. The requirement to find homes for unwanted litters is also eradicated.

Winter Recipe

Cauliflower and Potato Curry Method

What better way to get warmed up this winter than to tuck into this spicy dish. What’s more, it’s even better when left to cool and then reheated the next day as the flavours can really infuse into the vegetables.

Place the chunks of potato into a pan and cover with cold water. Bring the pan to the boil and then simmer for 5 minutes. Drain the potatoes and tip onto paper towel.

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large pan and add the onion and peanuts. Cook while stirring until the onion starts to turn translucent. Add the ginger paste, chilli flakes, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, coriander, turmeric and some salt and stir constantly for 1 minute.

Add the potatoes and cauliflower to the pan and stir to thoroughly mix all the ingredients.

Add 60ml of water, cover with a lid and reduce the heat to its lowest setting.

Cook gently with the lid on for around 10 minutes or until the cauliflower and potatoes are tender. Check from time to time in case the mixture is sticking, if so, add a tablespoon of water. Add salt and pepper, if desired.

Serve with rice and naan bread.

Ingredients Serves 4 500g potatoes (select a variety good for boiling, such as Kipfler), peeled and cut into chunks 500g cauliflower, cut into small florets vegetable oil 1 onion, finely chopped 20g raw peanuts 1 tbsp ginger paste ½ tsp red chilli flakes

1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric salt and pepper to taste

The origins of this classic American breakfast dish, so the story goes, came about after Lemeuel Benedict, a retired Wall Street stock broker, ordered a version of this dish at the Waldorf Hotel, New York, in 1894 to cure a hangover. The maître d’hotel was apparently so impressed with it that he added the creation to the breakfast and lunch menus.

At The Coffee Club, the Eggs Benedict is served on two halves of delicious toasted ciabatta bread. Served with two poached cage-free eggs and topped with a rich hollandaise sauce (egg yolk and butter seasoned with lemon juice, salt and pepper), we offer four different variations of the dish on our all-day breakfast menu.

The dish is available served either with lean leg ham or bacon or for a more luxurious twist try it with smoked salmon. Finally, we also offer a vegetarian option served with baby spinach and sautéed mushrooms. Delicious! And remember, all of our dishes at The Coffee Club on the menu come with a kilojoule count.

What’s great about this tart, apart from the fact that it is incredibly delicious to eat, is that it is meant to look homemade. This means that there is no need to bother rolling out pastry to exact measurements.

As an alternative to cinnamon, try adding ½ tsp almond essence instead.

Winter Recipe Rustic Pear and Apple Tart Ingredients readymade short crust pastry, defrosted according to the pack’s instructions 1 tbsp cornflour 2 tbsp light brown sugar, plus extra for sprinkling

1 tsp ground cinnamon 3 ripe pears 3 apples 1 tbsp lemon juice baking paper

Method

baking sheet 1 tbsp milk 1 tsp honey ¼ tsp boiling water

border all around the fruit of about 8cm.

Fold the border up over the fruit, leaving the fruit in the centre uncovered. Use the baking paper, if necessary, to help to lift up the pastry.

Don’t worry about getting the pastry even.

Brush the pastry with milk and sprinkle with the extra sugar.

Bake for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is golden. Remove the tart from the oven.

Make a glaze by mixing the honey and boiling water together in a small bowl. Brush the glaze over the fruit and pastry crust.

Place on a plate and allow to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature with custard.

Set the oven to 200°C. Mix together the cornflour, sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Peel the pears and apples, core them and cut into slices. Toss them in a large bowl with the lemon juice.

Sprinkle over the flour, sugar and cinnamon mix and stir well to coat the fruit evenly.

Roll out the pastry between 2 sheets of baking paper into a circular shape, about 30cm in diameter.

Lift onto the baking sheet and remove the top sheet of baking paper. Arrange the fruit mixture in the centre of the pastry circle, leaving a
