Stephanie Says…

The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert...

Layer up for the cooler months

Building a winter wardrobe is a welcome opportunity to get to play with layers and to have fun putting together all sorts of textures. Think about introducing new on-trend pieces to the wardrobe that can be worn year after year, complementing items already owned. A clear standout from the Autumn/Winter runways was the 70’s vibe, which has been reworked this time around to feature more modern shapes as well as an extra luxe feel. So expect to see plenty of pant suits in a wide leg with beautifully soft belted jackets, retro lapels, denim on denim, flared indigo jeans, fedora hats and lots of tan accessories. Culottes are well and truly here to stay for another season and will make just as big a statement in winter as they did in autumn. So long as they have an A-line shape and fall at the lower calf, they will look elegant as well as fresh. Wear them with a sweater that shows off the fitted waist of the culottes and a pair of platform ankle boots or heeled knee highs. Love them or hate them, turtlenecks are making a surprise reappearance in stores this winter! Fortunately, due to their mixed appeal and because they only really suit those with graceful long necks, there are also plenty of beautifully structured pieces of knitwear in luxurious textures out there too. These look wonderful with culottes, voluminous midi skirts and wide pants. When it comes to the weekend, look for pieces that encapsulate the athleisure look, which cleverly combines gym with streetwear. It’s not as glamourous or blingy as the sports-luxe trend so is much easier to wear when transitioning from one busy weekend activity to the next. It’s all about adding in a subtle sporty edge to the look. Try wearing a graphic

printed sweatshirt and luxury sneakers with a midi skirt. The athleisure trend is becoming more and more evident in men’s fashion too. Mix up classic heritage pieces, such as blazers, cardigans and shirts with cuffed-at-the-ankle track pants, slim sports tops and puffer gilets. Texture plays a big part so look out for items in tweed and cotton and mix with neoprene, mesh fabric and nylon. Finish off with cool quality sneakers in a slim fit in white or a bright colour, or go for a retro look by opting for a vintage pair.

John Miller opens new workshop and expanded studio

As a jeweller who is renowned for thinking outside the square when designing his distinctive gold and silver creations, John Miller now has the perfect home in which to continue to create his highly sought after pieces. 42 years after introducing the world to his unique, individually hand-crafted jewellery and just shy of 20 years since his move to Yallingup, this year has seen the opening of John’s brand new, highly unique workshop at his Marrinup Drive property. Featuring a wide array of south west timbers, including Marri, She-Oak, Jarrah and Peppermint, John’s stunning new feature timber desk is constructed entirely from Birds Eye Blue Gum and Tuart and is adorned overhead by a magnificent piece of Blackbutt Burl. The new workshop and increased studio space have also welcomed CAD specialist and diamond setter Ishkhan Kojayan from Laurisha Jewellery, complementing the existing team of

local jewellers, Emma Meakes and Kate Waters, who help create the beautiful jewellery that is John Miller Design. The expanded gallery now also includes a selection of pieces from six local metalsmiths. Design For The Home

Kitchen design trends

Looking to update your kitchen? Then be brave and consider the new creative ideas that are currently trending to transform the space. As the main hub of the home, the kitchen is the perfect room in which to inject some personality and spark. It’s the place where family and guests migrate to and congregate in so it lends itself perfectly to showing off individual, personal styles. After years of popularity, we are finally seeing a move away from stark, bright white kitchens. Despite white giving a fresh and clean look, homeowners are now choosing block colour to add interest to cabinetry and benchtops. Any colour goes but black and grey feature highly, as do timber grains due to their neutrality. The timber look can also be matched with complementary or contrasting accessories without overloading the colour palette. Black, in matte, also offers a surprisingly impressive and sophisticated finish to cabinetry. Timber is a great way to add a cosy warm feeling to the room especially when kitchens are, more often than not, open plan in their design. Use different types of wood finish ... cont. pg 24 22

home & garden to create subtle design interest and depth. For a really on-trend and stunning kitchen, think about using a mix of materials for cabinetry, benchtops and islands, such as wood, glass, stone and concrete.

Local Experts Merlin Cabinets

Located in Thornborough Road, Mandurah, luxury kitchen specialists Merlin Cabinets has been operating a thriving business in the local area since 2005. Bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience from his previous career in the UK, owner James Hoolahan and his team pride themselves on producing high quality work with sharp attention to detail as well as first rate customer service. Experts in the design, manufacture and installation of luxury kitchens and custom cabinets, the team uses a range of top quality brands and materials, including Blum draw systems and engineered and natural stone surfaces. With a strong focus on designing kitchens with plenty of storage space and a high usability factor, designs also oer a strong visual appeal. The team is also able to create 3D drawings in the initial stages of planning. These drawings can be produced together with a 3-dimensional walk through model, allowing clients the opportunity to visualise the kitchen before the start of the manufacturing process. For further information on installing a new kitchen with Merlin Cabinets, call 9584 2822, visit the showroom at Unit 3, 14 Thornborough Road or go online at www.merlincabinets.com.au

Bronze, copper, brass and gold provide touches of opulence and gleaming colour to neutral kitchens. Source pendant lights, taps or accessories to add a little bit of glamour. These warm metals also look great for range hoods. The streamlined look of an uncluttered kitchen is still ranking highly on design briefs. Therefore, handle-less draws and doors continue to be popular as well as large scale walk-in pantries. These adjoining rooms help to hide the daily kitchen mess and noise as the main workstations are partitioned o either through an open doorway or, quite strikingly, behind steel-framed glass doors and windows. The latter option adds a unique element to the kitchen almost like a bijou cafÊ residing behind the glass. Seemingly in contradiction to the trend of clean lines, there is also a growing trend to incorporate open shelving into new kitchen designs. It certainly adds a lived-in and welcoming feeling to a room that may have been lacking in the minimalist kitchens of the past. Open shelving also has the obvious benefit of making the kitchen functional with frequently used items being readily at hand. 24

Technology For The Home Control 4

The highly sophisticated home automation system

The benefits of having a fully automated home are endless and, thanks to Control 4, many homeowners are now enjoying the opportunity to control electronic devices, appliances or systems at the touch of a button. This market-leading home automation system, which uniquely can also be retro-fitted to any property, is simple to use and compatible with over 7,000 third-party electronics devices in consumer electronics, appliances, energy, lighting and home security. Just imagine, though, if you could upscale this technology into a business? Well, this is exactly what Control 4 is designed to do and what local integrator and exclusive distributor of Control 4 in Mandurah, Mediatek are currently having great success with. The team’s latest project is to fit Control 4 into a cutting-edge modular designed hotel; a project where modern architectural design meets cutting edge automation. By automating lights, temperature, audio/video and energy systems, this new hotel will now be vastly more eďŹƒcient, in turn reducing costs to make a significant bottom-line impact.

Guests will also experience the very latest in room and hotel technology. Once the technology is installed, each room will feature smart-controlled heating and cooling systems, curtains and lighting. At check-in, the room will be instantly alerted of the incoming guest and room temperature, lighting and in-room entertainment systems will be immediately adjusted. On check-out, rooms will also be activated to conserve power. Plus, there will be no need for the outdated hotel directory; instead, an in-room tablet will contain all the necessary information together with fully automated room service. And finally, in addition to the fully automated rooms, Control 4 will be extended through the lobby, throughout the hotel and into the property’s conference rooms. Want to find out more about how Control 4 can be installed in your home or business? Mediatek at Unit 1, 81 Gordon Road (inside Mandurah Flyscreens and Security Doors) can offer a live demonstration of the system either at their offices or at homes or businesses locally. Call 9581 6035 for more information. 26

Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake All new wagon with extra practicality

Eighteen months after the arrival of the game-changing CLA comes the launch of the wagon version of Mercedes Benz’s hugely popular small sedan. The CLA Shooting Brake becomes the largest of the Mercedes-Benz small car range; a range that now includes the A-Class, B-Class, GLA SUV and CLA, and, just like its sedan sibling, once again it takes its design cues from the curvaceous CLS 4-door coupé. The CLA Shooting Brake may still have those unmistakeable sweeping CLS looks but the key to this new model is the extra space it provides. Offering an extra 25 litres of boot capacity to give an overall total of 495 litres, the hatch-style tailgate provides plenty of extra practicality and flexibility. With back seats that fold flat, an extra bracket cleverly allows the back seats to be stashed vertically to further increase storage capacity. A larger opening to the boot also allows for more cumbersome items, such as bikes or golf clubs, to be stored much more easily.

30

motoring

It’s not just the extra storage space, however, that hits the mark. Passengers will also enjoy the extra headroom afforded by the reconfigured roof that stretches further towards the back of the car. Although still clocking in at the same length and width of the sedan version, an extra 40 millimetres of rear headspace has been achieved through the newly designed roof; a roof that also now allows for a greater choice of volume and shape of items stacked on top of it. Available with a choice of four engine options, the range starts with the entry level CLA200 1.6 litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol, delivering 115kW of power and 250Nm of torque. The diesel option is the CLA200CDi with its 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder turbo powered powerplant, delivering 100kW and 300Nm, whereas the CLA250 Sport, featuring a 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine, is expected to be the popular choice amongst buyers. Producing 155kW of power and 350Nm of torque through its 7-speed transmission system, this all-wheel drive model offers plenty of acceleration and reassuring handling. For those in need of some serious performance, the CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake delivers in spades. Fitted with a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder turbo powered petrol engine that delivers 265kW and 450Nm, this brute of a unit propels the wagon from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds, again, using its all-wheel drive system. Adding extra versatility to the CLA range without compromising on style, the CLA Shooting Brake is a welcome addition to the Mercedes Benz range. Priced from just over $50,000 plus on-roads, it also provides excellent value for money. For further information on the all new Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake or any other car in the Mercedes-Benz range, contact Southpoint Star on 9586 5388.

BMW 1 Series LCI Upgraded 1 Series now available

Launched as a replacement for the BMW 3 Series Compact back in 2004, the BMW 1 Series has without doubt been an unqualified success. With over 2 million units sold worldwide over the last ten years, car buyers have flocked to BMW’s entry level model in their droves and there is no reason to suggest that the latest 1 Series offering won’t receive the same enthusiastic response. Four years on from the launch of the second generation 1 Series, the facelift BMW 1 Series LCI offers a radical upgrade to the exiting model. Available again as 4-door or coupé, aside from an extensive visual makeover, it is now fitted with the latest generation of engines, offering considerably improved performance and efficiency. Design-wise, the exterior of the 1 Series LCI has adopted some noticeable changes. A more dynamic, chiselled front end features a reshaped kidney grille, larger air intakes and flatter-geometry headlights with LED daytime running lights. The LED-powered rear lights have also been completely remodelled and now display the ‘L’ shape characteristics of current BMW models. With slightly more flared wheel arches, a new rear bumper and some additional styling cues, the 1 Series LCI has become a seriously good looking car. 32

motoring It’s not just the exterior, though, that has benefited from the makeover. With its redesigned centre stack, the 1 Series LCI’s standard features now include automatic air-con, a fully adjustable leather steering wheel, a rain sensor, automatic headlights, BMW’s Radio Professional with six speakers and AUX input and a 6.5-inch iDrive infotainment system along with a huge list of optional extras. The interior also features luxurious chrome trim and high-gloss black surfaces to finish the look. “fitted with the latest An extensively updated engine line-up and extended BMW generation of engines, EfficientDynamics technology offering considerably improved continue the impressive performance and efficiency” upgrade. With a choice of three, four and six cylinder power units available, matched with six-speed manual and eight-speed steptronic transmission systems, the model range extends from the three-cylinder BMW 116d EfficientDynamics Edition to the powerful six cylinder BMW M135i. As the most efficient in the 1 Series range, the 85kW/116hp, 116d EfficientDynamics Edition achieves a browser-beating average fuel consumption of 3.4 litres per 100kms and CO² emissions of just 89g/km in the EU test cycle. In turn, thanks to a 5kW increase in output to 240kW/326hp, the M135i powers from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds while still achieving an average fuel consumption of 8 litres per 100kms. ... cont. pg 34

motoring

Quicker and more efficient, the 1 Series LCI is also more agile with advanced chassis technology now giving an almost perfect 50-50 weight distribution between the front and rear axles. The radar-based Active Cruise Control System and latest generation Parking Assistant and camera-based Driving Assistant all add to the overall outstanding driving experience.

A new addition has arrived in the premium compact market, a vehicle that BMW have cleverly aligned with the rest of the brand’s line-up. Expect plenty of interest! Quintrex Cruiseabout 610

Class-leading bowrider now with new improved hull

In the summer edition of The Mandurah Life, we reported on Quintrex’s recent re-branding of its popular range of family-friendly boats, including the rebadging of its best-selling outboard-powered bowriders from Freedom Sports to Cruiseabouts. With a choice of over 10 different bowrider models, ranging from the 4.96 metre Cruiseabout 480 up to the flagship 6.35 metre Cruiseabout 650, the sturdy 6.16 metre Cruiseabout 610 is one of the largest in the line-up. In fact, it was the largest until the release of the 650. Recently updated, this sporty looking bowrider now comes fitted with the brand new Millennium Blade hull, an evolution of the original award-winning Millennium hull famous for its dead-rise finish and soft ride. The new improved Blade hull, together with its flared bow, adds significant improvements in handling, ride and efficiency, offering a sharper entry into the water. This allows the boat to power through the swell with ease whilst at the same time keeping occupants dry and comfortable. As expected on a boat of this size, there’s plenty of room, enough for 8, and plenty of storage under the bow seats, underfloor and in the rear transom lounge. This makes it the perfect boat for enjoying an extended day out on the water whether fishing, water skiing or just simply cruising. A newly designed raised top-deck, providing greater driver visibility, features lower-profile curved windscreens together with a stylish redesigned dash. The redesigned transom provides a smaller outboard, well ideal for today’s lighter, more compact outboards, and the newly improved rear lounge folds neatly away under the transom to help maximise room on those big fishing trips. Moulded side panels, including deep storage pockets and cup holders, add to its practicality. Taking performance, handling and versatility to a whole new level, the Cruiseabout 610 is a continuation in the long line of Quintrex success stories. Golf Tips

with Craig Tapp

Hi everyone! I hope you are holing many putts and having the occasional chip in! I was standing on the range recently, watching half a dozen or so hackers slashing balls looking for the answer to their golfing problems. The one thing that really caught my eye was the amount of technology that is now part of the game. Everyone, and I mean everyone, seemed to have a massive headed driver with some super-duper, light-weighted shaft with a special kick point to maximise distance. They all had about a thousand different settings for loft, lie-angle, hook or fade bias. Weights could also be moved to change launch angles and spin rates. Fair dinkum, you almost needed to have a university degree to tee off! While some were just slashing away, others had the latest Bushnell distance lasers out checking for carry distances to the millimetre. Up the far end, we had another chap with a video camera and a small device measuring his smash factor. Now I know technology has changed the way we live and for most part in a better way. For example, how did we ever survive without a mobile phone? But has technology helped us play better golf? Are handicaps getting lower? Are course and tournament records getting lower? The answer to these questions is arguably no. But this could be about to change as we begin to better understand some of the data and facts that this technology has inadvertently given to us. Here are a few points to get you thinking; not my opinions but facts coming from the data that the technology has given to us. 1. The clubface has approximately 5 times more influence on the starting point than the swing path. If your club is pointed left at

impact that is where the ball starts, irrespective of club path. 2. The swing path puts the spin on the ball. Did you know that when your mate hits a big slice that starts over the left hand trees and slices back onto the fairway his club face is actually closed at impact – yes closed! 3. With a putter, the swing path only accounts for 15% of the starting point. That means the putter face and where it is aiming at impact are much more important than the putter path. 4. When trying to hit a low pitch shot with plenty of spin, a hook shot creates higher spin rates. This means you need to deliver the club head from an in-to-out path on the downswing with a very shallow attack to hit those pro-like pitches. 5. Want to hit the driver longer? There is a hot spot high on the clubface just above the traditional sweet spot. Without getting too technical, the gear effect of the club face will launch the ball a little higher with a little less spin to give maximum carry and, with the roll, increase overall distance. I hope these few examples give a better understanding of how technology is starting to help in our quest for better golf. We are very lucky in the Peel area to have several excellent coaches and I highly recommend you find a PGA professional with a good reputation, book a couple of lessons and see how your game improves. Good luck and good golfing!

Hello We’re Amanda & Melinda, your personal travel managers Paradise has been found and it is only an 8 hour direct flight from Perth. Welcome to the island of Mauritius – stunning landscapes, white sand beaches with idyllic lagoons, adventure and activity at your doorstep and a charming cultural blend (European, Chinese, indian and creole). Mauritius will have you in its spell soon after your arrival.

Mauritius is located just under 6,000kms to the west of Perth, Western Australia, a direct 8 hour flight (just under 7 hours on the return journey) with Air Mauritius and Virgin Australia from most major cities. It’s also a great place to enjoy a stopover before travelling on to Africa, Madagascar, Reunion islands, Seychelles and even Europe. This island paradise has something for everyone, no matter what style of holiday you’re looking for. From destination weddings, romantic honeymoons or couples getaways staying in a 5 star boutique resort on the Le Morne Peninsular; to memorable family holidays in one of the many all inclusive resorts. Your children can learn the art of trapeze, try their arm at golf and snorkel stunning reefs while you discover some of the other

resort activities on offer such as fishing, diving, golfing, photography, or hiking. Melinda, who has recently returned from a holiday to Mauritius, says “Mauritius has to be the most amazing destination I have visited lately. From the stunning lagoons in the Le Morne Peninsula, to the conservation efforts at Safari Adventure where I walked with a white lion, and the variety of local produce including tea, rum, vanilla and essential oils, all grown and produced locally. It’s obvious when you are meandering through the markets in the capital Port Louis or visiting the temples in the south that you are witnessing a variety of nationals co-existing. They live by their country’s motto of ‘One Island, Many People, All Mauritian’. I have just found my island paradise.”

South West Sports Stars Allira Hanczakowski

In this edition of The Mandurah Life, we hear from Allira Hanczakowski, student, elite athlete, staff member at The Rink, Bunbury, and all round amazing young woman with wheels on! It’s fascinating how simple everyday decisions can have such a large impact on your life pathway. I often wonder what I would be doing and what I would be like if my parents hadn’t decided to take my sister and me roller skating at 7 and 5 years old respectively. They simply thought it would be a fun little family outing but now as a 21 year old world class athlete, I think it’s fair to say that it has become so much more than simply a hobby. It’s not just about the training and the physical side of the sport that keeps me going, it’s the entire lifestyle and countless opportunities that keep me wanting more. When I was 13 years old, I watched my big sister compete at her first World Championships and it made me realise that I didn’t want to be in the stands as a spectator. I wanted to be out there on the rink as well. Two years later, as a 15 year old high school student, I competed in my first World Championships in Germany. While I was sharing the rink with people from all over the world, and in the same venue as some of my idols that I had looked up to for so many years, I realised I had been opened up into the world and life of an athlete. It was the most exciting and thrilling experience and I then knew that there was no stopping me. Since then, I have been seeing the world (from Europe to South America and Asia) while doing what I love. I have competed in 5 World Championships and have been ranked as highly as 9th place. The decision to continue the sport at such a high level came entirely from within, of course with the endless and amazing support of my family, coach and all those around me. I still had all the same goals as my peers, to finish school with a high ATAR, to get into university and to start studying. I wanted to fit

everything in and so I made it happen. I have just graduated from The University of Western Australia (BA Linguistics and Italian), and will soon commence my postgraduate studies (Master of Translation). Languages are another passion in my life, in particular Italian, so every year for the past 6 years I have been back to Italy for either holiday, study or work. I’m also really interested in fitness outside the rink so I make time to run, go to the gym, do Pilates and yoga. People often ask me how I fit everything in but I follow a really simple concept; I’m only pursuing the things that I actually enjoy and want to do. I can’t stress enough just how much my sport has given to me from many different perspectives. Sure, it has given me friendships and experiences that will always be a part of me but it has given me my ‘spark’. It has taught me about motivation and the real worth of sacrifice and compromise. It has taught me how important dedication is and that practice really does make perfection. It has taught me how to be productive and that you really can make time for all your different interests and passions. I have learned how important it is to have ‘balance’ in your life. Sport is a massive part of my life and makes me who I am but by pursuing my passion I feel like I have got so much more out of it than my 5 year old self could have ever imagined! 40

Island Living It was certainly an exciting a time for Mandurah in the early 1990’s when the Dawesville Cut channel was built between the estuary and the ocean. Designed to eliminate environmental issues in the estuary, the new channel also created a new island from Halls Head in the north to Wannanup in the south. This magnificent island, of course, has always had some of the most beautiful beaches in Mandurah both on the ocean side and the estuary side. It also offers residents the opportunity to enjoy all manner of water based activities, including fishing, swimming, boating and water-skiing. And don’t forget the relaxing walks along the sandy beaches where amazing ocean sunsets and stunning estuary sunrises can be experienced. This sparkling coastline also includes a number of fabulous surfing beaches and some secluded bays ideal for the little ones, such as Falcon Bay and Doddi’s Beach in Halls Head. Children are also well catered for when it comes to their education with a number of excellent schools available, including Falcon Primary, Halls Head College and Living Waters Lutheran College. With shopping centres at Halls Head, Erskine and Falcon and plenty of local services, including a library and a selection of medical centres, it’s not surprising that this newly created island continues to be one of the most popular areas of Mandurah to live. Currently, according to REIWA, the average selling time on the market in this sought after location is 80 days, and approximately 46 sales were achieved in May 2015. This figure included homes, land and units. REIWA’s figures show that at the end of May 2015, the approximate number of properties listed for sale was as follows:45

campsite. Small dots always represent people and the different colours represent the different clans. A white dot always represents the ones that have passed on who I believe still follow that same pathway to this day. Many of your stories have been told to you by older brothers or cousins. Can you share one of them with us? ‘Turtle Hunting’. As summer approaches, it gets too hot for the turtles. To survive…. they go deep down to the really yellow mud. To breathe, they leave an air hole. Through this comes the yellow mud that sits on the black mud. We came along with our sticks, long sticks, and poked them down there until they hit the shells. It was then the little kid’s job to dig the holes and get them out.

Gloria Kearing will present her first solo exhibition, ‘To Be Complete’ at CASM from 26 June to 19 July. Her work shares stories of her traditional Nyungar culture and life including how her family used to live and eat as well as their pathways and her interpretation of dreamtime stories relayed by brothers and older cousins. Gloria, can you share a little about your early childhood? I grew up in Barragup with my twin as the second youngest of twelve children. As children we did everything. Life was free, the best. I remember crossing rivers to get to the estuary with my family to make river camps, like a holiday. The boys built an open shelter at our campsite from sticks and bushes while we carried blankets and goodies for mum to cook. We all slept on the ground and loved it. It wasn’t nice or good to go to school. We were teased a lot and called terrible names. As a result, we wagged school, and instead spent time with dad who taught us about living in the bush and about our culture which was much more interesting than English. I was taken away from my family when I was in about grade five and sent to a mission to live because the government thought we were not well educated or well looked after. How did art come to play an important part in your life? When my own kids reached primary school I started to tell them about my life, including the big changes that occurred when I was taken to the mission and how different my childhood was from theirs. I did not want them to go through what I went through and soon moved from story-telling with words to telling stories through art. You use many symbols within your painting. Can you explain some of their meanings? The large circles represent campsites and the pathways coming off the circles represent how the families travelled to and from each site. Sometimes I also use an empty circle or half circle for a campsite. A red dot in the middle represents a fire at the

Do you have any advice for young or emerging artists? Do what’s in your heart. If you really have to put it down, do it. Do not sit there thinking…..thinking….. What do you see yourself doing in the future? Keep on painting. I have still got a lot of stories to tell. Gloria’s full interview can be found at www.artsacesmandurah.com.au

exquisite watercolour and pencil representation of a ‘Melanistic Fallow Deer’ and Georgia Christensen’s self-reflective artwork ‘Filter’ was acquired by the Youth Development Department of the City of Mandurah. Variety and quality shone through in the eighteen to twenty five year category with Shaedyn Brown winning the first prize award with her sophisticated digital painting ‘Blind Age’. Bursting from the seams in fun, colour and intricacy was ‘Crooked Chaos’, an urban artwork created with posta products on canvas by Ziggy (Jo York) which took second prize.. During the course of the exhibition, professional artists Lewis Horne and Helena Tay facilitated cane sculpture and illustration and marketing workshops respectively for youth and adults groups. Many of the workshops were filled to capacity and were highly rated by all participants leaving them up skilled and motivated. Masterpieces 2K16 is open for all Mandurah youths between the ages of 13 and 25. Artworks can be entered in sculpture, digital art, film, painting and drawing. Details will be announced on the Youth Development and CASM websites later this year. www.mandurah.wa.gov.au/masterpieces.htm www.artspacesmandurah.com.au

Masterpieces 2K15 The strength of creative interpretation amongst Mandurah’s youth sector continues to build as was demonstrated recently in the Masterpieces 2K15 annual Youth Art Competition and Exhibition at CASM. Nineteen young artists between the ages of thirteen and twenty five entered an eclectic body of works consisting of oil and acrylic paintings, watercolour, urban design, digital media, pastel and drawing. The context of the works fell into a small scope of categories encompassing landscape, fantasy landscapes, portraiture, self-portraiture and animal studies however the concept of each work was varied and individual. Each category was a competitive hot spot with individual works considered thoughtfully by the three event judges: Jenny Simpson, CEO of Awesome Arts Festival, Rob West, Director of Terrace Art Framers and Councillor Jane Field. Chloe Dennis was the winner of the thirteen to fifteen year category with her striking tonal portrait of Tom Hanks titled ‘Out of the Shadows’. Second prize was presented to Erin Pimlott for her quirky, mixed media work ‘Crookshank’s Spellbound’. ‘Me in Oils’, a larger than life, engaging self-portrait by Courtney Cummins was presented with first prize in the sixteen to seventeen year category with Grace Dennis awarded second prize for her ‘Untitled’ emotive and sensitively painted, monotone portrait. Within the same category, Jess Tomlinson was awarded a highly commended certificate for her Shaedyn Brown with ‘Blind Age’, Image by Roz D’Raine

Book Review Modern Tropical Garden Design

Dipping into Modern Tropical Garden Design is an informative and personal experience. Wijaya describes not only how the gardens were constructed but also their eect on the senses and the ambience that they create. It is certainly a beautiful book and full of information. It is also highly likely that Modern Tropical Garden Design will, as intended by Wijaya, inspire people around the world to use nature in conjunction with architecture in their own garden designs.

Made Wijaya

Page after page, Made Wijaya’s Modern Tropical Garden Design presents a collection of stunning images as well as a detailed documentation of the work and philosophies of the best modern tropical landscape designers over the past century. A prolific designer of gardens and houses in the tropical world, Wijaya has also written several books to showcase his work. This time, however he has chosen to take readers on a specific journey to share his appreciation of how modernism has impacted on landscaping in the tropical world.

Introducing ... Beyond Awareness Counselling

Unlock your power and embrace change

Recently launched in Mandurah, Beyond Awareness Counselling is owned and operated by Lesley Webster, who offers a range of services based on her studies in family and relationship counselling and holistic non-verbal therapies, and from working in the field of drug and alcohol addictions. As a professional counsellor, Lesley offers a humanistic outlook of unconditional positive regard for each individual who, when given the right environment, can be nurtured to grow. She offers a safe, non-judgemental, confidential space. Life is an ever-changing journey. Psychologists tell us that these changes are to be expected, however, at certain times, people may need assistance to charter these stormy waters. Loss and grief, ill health, mental illness, situational depression and anxiety may trip people up. Throughout all these stages, communication between families and individuals is crucial. Lesley begins her counselling service by asking her clients to look at an area of their life that is not working for them. Does it feel like a familiar situation or a repetitive conflict? Why not explore these situations? With the belief that in all situations there may well be unconsidered solutions and opportunities, a feeling of excitement may develop around change. A change in life may bring some fear but it is here that Lesley attempts to find a way to alter perception and see challenges as opportunities, which may develop a more peaceful way forward. Looking at what can be done differently will often create excitement for what the future may hold. In family therapy, Lesley assists clients to

understand where they may be stuck in negative, repetitive patterns. Clients could be living out their own beliefs and values, or someone else’s. Is there anything that can be learnt from their childhood and life experiences? For those clients who find it challenging to verbalise feelings, Lesley offers therapies, such as watercolour art, sand play and clay work. Through her experience in the area of addictions, Lesley has also found that it is imperative to work collaboratively with the client and to ascertain where they perceive themselves in the cycles of change. How is their habit impacting on their lives and the lives of those they love? What are their losses and how ready are they to change? Working closely with Lesley, clients are offered proven strategies for change. For more information on Beyond Awareness Counselling and the range of services available, call Lesley on 0402 089295 or email beyondawareness@hotmail.com. Free fifteen minute consultations are available for those unsure of whether help is required. 60

Winter Health

Get out and get fit

It might be cold and the wind might be blowing but winter is a great season for getting outside and getting fit. The cooler weather makes more strenuous activities possible and much more pleasurable and we don’t have to contend with those strong UV rays either. At the start of a winter’s session, yes, it will be cold and there may be rain but those who have exercised in these conditions get hooked on feeling revitalised and having more energy. Exercising outside not only has the obvious physical benefits but it also has the unique bonus of providing psychological benefits. Enjoying nature, even wild wintery nature, can provide a mood boost as well as being mentally stimulating. It’s a well-known fact that after working out, feelings of tension and anxiety are significantly lower and feelings of self-esteem and enjoyment are much higher. Plus, we all tend to engage more positively with exercise when undertaking it outside rather than inside a gym, and we are more enthusiastic about it.

The perfect way to start enjoying winter workouts is to get walking. Find a range of circular routes with varied terrain so that the scenery constantly changes along with the physical demands on your body. As you improve, incorporate jogging and jumping or climbing over obstacles; you will find muscles you never knew existed. Go cycling with friends or get a scooter and try keeping up with your children. Join an outdoor boot camp and enjoy the motivational benefits of exercising in a group as well as making new friends. Look into outdoor team sports; some may even be free to join. Whatever conditions winter brings with it this year, don’t stay inside to avoid the rain or cold. Think about embracing the great outdoors and its different terrains and venture outside to exercise. Your body as well as your brain will thank you.

We provide service and support to adults with intellectual, physical and neurological disabilities from Kwinana and Boddington to south of Mandurah. Our lifestyle option offers individuals the chance to live in a shared home whilst having their particular personal and support needs met. They also have opportunity to develop their life skills in areas of their choosing. Our community access program facilitates the individual’s choice of social and domestic skills development, personalised recreational activities and community engagement to tailored educational and training positions. Each person’s lifestyle choice revolves around their personal need and not organisational or operational timetables. As an organisation this can often be logistically difficult however the needs of each individual are our highest priority and pivotal to the core of our vision. Canine Parvovirus By Sarah Cooper

simple test using a stool sample can be performed at a veterinary clinic which may confirm the diagnosis. In some cases, a diagnosis cannot be confirmed, however, the treatment provided is exactly the same as for dogs with severe gastroenteritis. Without treatment, approximately 95% of dogs suffering from parvovirus will die. With treatment, survival can range from 65-95%. If your dog is showing symptoms of the disease, avoid exposure to other dogs and to areas where other dogs frequent. Wash your hands and change your clothes before handling other dogs. A 1-part bleach to 30-parts water solution can also be used to decontaminate surfaces if contact has been maintained for at least 10 minutes. The treatment of infected dogs consists of supportive care to correct dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities, to address fluid losses, to control vomiting and prevent secondary infections. Currently, there is no specific treatment for Canine Parvovirus and quarantine from other dogs is required to prevent the spread of the disease. Treatment can be expensive and, therefore, we highly recommend that vaccinations are carried out appropriately. There is no evidence that Canine Parvovirus can be transmitted to humans. Sarah Cooper is a veterinary nurse at Pinjarra Veterinary Hospital, 1754 Pinjarra Road, Pinjarra. Open Mon to Fri 7am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 12pm, the hospital also provides an after-hours’ emergency service. Call 9531 1555 or find them on Facebook.

A disease that first appeared in the late 1970’s, Canine Parvovirus is a highly infectious virus that attacks the gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular systems of dogs, causing parvovirus enteritis. Veterinarians in Australia have reported an increase in the number of cases of Parvovirus from year to year, however, for correctly vaccinated dogs there have not been reports of an obvious increase in the number of infections. Highly contagious, Canine Parvovirus is spread by either oral or nasal contact with contaminated faeces, through a contaminated environment or by contaminated objects. It is extremely resistant to the environment and can survive on objects such as clothing, shoes and floors for months or even years. Adult dogs that have either not been vaccinated, inadequately vaccinated or housed in large numbers in close confinement, for example, in boarding kennels, are most likely to be susceptible to the virus. Puppies that have not completed their course of vaccinations are also likely to be at risk. To avoid putting your dog at risk, always ensure vaccinations are up to date. It is extremely important that puppies receive a full immunisation course in the first few months of life followed by a booster vaccination 12 months later. Vaccination is the most effective way of controlling the spread of Parvovirus and your local veterinary clinic will be the best source of information regarding the prevention of the disease. Clinical signs of the disease include a loss of appetite, severe vomiting, diarrhoea (this may contain blood), dehydration and weakness. A 62

Restaurant Review Shisha Indian Restaurant

Shisha, a brand new Indian restaurant located in the Mandurah Ocean Marina, recently opened its doors on Mother’s Day. Being partial to a bit of Indian fare, The Mandurah Life went along to give it a try. With over 20 years’ combined experience working in high end Indian hotels and Perth-based Indian restaurants, co-owners Gunjan and Parm are certainly well versed in creating authentic, high quality Indian cuisine. Just one look at the impressive menu confirms the skills and creativity of the team at Shisha. You would be hard-pressed to find a more extensive array of dishes outside Perth or even in the city itself! Uniquely for Mandurah, Shisha is also open for breakfast, serving up an enticing selection of breakfast-style dishes with a distinctive Indian twist. We couldn’t wait to sample some of the delights on the special breakfast menu and after much deliberation we decided to try two of the breakfast signature dishes. First up was Akari, an Indian take on that most popular breakfast dish of scrambled eggs. Served with a generous portion of naan bread, stuffed with potato, grilled tomatoes and goat’s cheese, the Indian-style scrambled eggs that were cooked with cumin, fresh coriander and ground turmeric were quite superb. With just enough heat in the dish to add that unmistakeable Eastern piquancy, this was the perfect dish to awaken those tastebuds at the start of the day. Next, we tried the Baked Omelette. Served in a small bowl, again with naan bread and grilled tomatoes, the ham, spinach and cheese in the omelette not only

makes this dish incredibly tasty, it is also one of the healthier options on the menu with its complete absence of oil through being oven baked. Quite delicious! With both dishes priced at $15 and generous in their size, they are excellent value for money. For lunchtime and evening diners, our recommendations would include the fabulous entrée Tandoori Raan; a boneless lamb leg marinated overnight in wine vinegar and cooked in a tandoor oven. Whilst for a main, both the Octopus Masala, fresh octopus tossed in an onion and tomato masala, and Crab Kolhapuri, crab meat simmered in coconut milk and mustard seeds, are already getting rave reviews. One thing is for sure, there is certainly no lack of choice! Open 7 days with takeaway and home delivery available, Shisha is a welcome addition to the Mandurah eating out scene. We will be back! Restaurant Review Warung Ade

Fans of Indonesian cuisine have no need to travel all the way to Bali this winter to enjoy their favourite meal! Newly opened on Mandurah Terrace, Warung Ade is a family owned Indonesian restaurant serving a selection of delicious, traditional Indonesian dishes. The Mandurah Life went along to give it a try. We originally booked in to do a review on a Friday lunchtime but the restaurant was so busy we had to come back the following week. Well, if that’s not a good sign, then I don’t know what is! First time restaurant owners Head Chef Edi Sukmana and wife Veronica Scaf have clearly already been a big hit with the Mandurah public and on closer inspection it’s not hard to see why. Sourcing fresh, high quality ingredients and local produce where possible, the team takes great pride in creating everything on the menu from scratch on the premises, and the freshness and depth of flavour in the food is testament to this. With the menu featuring a mouth-watering selection of grilled, noodle and fried rice dishes, we decided to try one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, Whole Fish Balado. Served sizzling on the pan, this beautifully presented and generously sized deep fried snapper served with rice is covered in a traditional balado sauce. A mix of capsicum, fresh tomatoes and chilli, this fabulous sauce can be served up from mild to very hot. We chose somewhere in between and thoroughly enjoyed the spicy tang

combined with the tender white meat of the snapper. Unsurprisingly, this happens to be the most popular dish on the menu! Sensational! We were reliably informed by Edi that the dish that runs as a close second in the popularity stakes is the Special Fried Rice – Nasi Goreng Special. Served with fried chicken breast, 2 skewers of satay beef (100 day grain-fed rib-eye Harvey beef fillet), or chicken, fried egg and prawn crackers, this dish also contains the restaurant’s special homemade peanut sauce. We will have to come back for that one. Bringing a taste of classic Indonesian cuisine and culture to a corner of Mandurah, along with the country’s renowned friendly and attentive service, Warung Ade is a must visit in town. Book a table while you still can! Open 7 Days, Lunch 11am to 3pm, Dinner 5pm to 9pm Shop 1A, 52 Mandurah Terrace BYO and takeaway available Tel 9557 5060 66

Lamb Massaman Curry

By Jiradej Deesri, Head Chef, Jasmine Thai

A mainstay of our menu and one of our most popular creations, this delicious curry is the perfect dish to enjoy all year round. However, the Thai hot version (all of our dishes are available mild, medium, hot or Thai hot) will certainly keep out the winter cold! Containing slow cooked lamb portions infused in a massaman curry paste with coconut milk, potato chunks, onion and peanuts, the tasty lamb is marinated overnight before being gently cooked for around 4 hours. Meet ...

Jeff Dewar, Willow Bridge Estate

The Geographe Wine region continues to punch above its weight, winning a slew of awards in the recent round of wine shows. Owner of one of the largest wineries in the Geographe region, Willow Bridge Estate and based in the Ferguson Valley, Jeff Dewar is a passionate winemaker, who has quickly built up an impressive reputation for his wines both at home and abroad. The Mandurah Life recently met up for a chat.

than most. Cooling ocean breezes, elevation, rich soils and close proximity to WA’s second largest city.

What prompted you to make a career out of the wine industry? With two older brothers managing successful merino sheep studs, I decided early on that I didn’t want to be in direct competition with them. I was confident about diversifying yet remaining in the broad perimeter of agriculture. It was the mid-nineties when I was first introduced to the romance of the wine industry. So were a lot of other people both here in Australia and in NZ and I’m very fortunate to be still running a successful business today.

Which of your wines are you most proud of? The Black Dog Shiraz is definitely the wine I’m most proud of. It’s a wine that none of us saw coming. It was a result of a small block of Shiraz, rightly now named The Black Dog, being left to ripen for two to three weeks later than the rest of the block. Our winemaker at the time, Rob Bowen, anticipated high concentrated, rich flavours and the resultant wine was given the name Black Dog. The name originated when our cellar hand at the time described the colour as being ‘as black as the inside of a dog’. Successive vintages and numerous awards later and the wine has become an iconic Willow Bridge wine that I’m immensely proud of.

What brought you to the Ferguson Valley? Initially, I had in my mind that the region in which I wanted to establish a winery was Margaret River. This resulted in exciting many a real estate agent over a period of months, only to come away unsatisfied and find myself still searching for the perfect property. A family friend then introduced us to the Ferguson Valley, which not only changed my and now my family’s life for ever but has had a hand in introducing this hidden jewel to the world. When looking for the ideal conditions to grow premium grapes, the Valley provides more

What do you get up to in your spare time? Spare time...well, with 4 young children, most of my spare time is spent being involved with their sport or hobbies. I do enjoy having a game of golf or getting down to Busselton and spending time in the boat, fishing. Travel is something that I enjoy too and with us exporting to over 10 countries, it gives me the chance to visit at least two markets per year. 70

Winter Recipe Thai Green Curry Meatballs This is a new take on a classic Thai dish and it works just as well with minced lamb or beef. For a great time-saving idea, make the meatballs in advance and keep them in the fridge overnight or even freeze them and save them for another evening.

Ingredients (Serves 4-6) Meatball mixture

Sauce

500g minced chicken ½ cup breadcrumbs

1½ tbsp Thai green curry paste

½ cup desiccated coconut

1 tbsp fish sauce 1 tsp palm sugar

salt and pepper to taste

400ml can coconut milk

Mandurah’s Waterfront Wine Bar Open from 11am 7 days. All day dining

1 zucchini, sliced

oil for frying

Method In a large bowl, mix together all the meatball mixture ingredients. Roll the mixture into small balls about 2.5cm in diameter. The mixture should make approximately 25 meatballs. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the meatballs in batches until they are sealed. Do not cook them completely. Remove meatballs from the pan and keep warm. Add the curry paste to the pan and fry for 1 to 2 minutes or until fragrant. Add the fish sauce and palm sugar and mix with the paste. Pour in the coconut milk. Add the zucchini and then add the meatballs. Lower the heat and gently simmer for up to 15 minutes or until the sauce has reduced and the zucchini and meatballs are cooked through. While simmering, carefully spoon the coconut sauce over the meatballs and gently stir from time to time. Serve with rice and top with chopped coriander leaves.
