orino este, poate, unul dintre cele mai neîndreptățite orașe din Italia. În timp ce turiștii sunt atrași de mai popularele și aglomeratele Florența, Roma sau Veneția, Torino este ignorat pe nedrept și din neștiință. Așa se face că puțini știu ce bijuterie este Torino… o bijuterie a coroanei regale. La propriu, căci Torino a fost prima capitală a Regatului Italiei, după unirea din 1861, și locul de naștere al primului rege al Italiei: Vittorio Emanuele II de Savoya. De asemenea, grandoarea orașului Torino se vede la tot pasul, pentru că și să vrei și nu poți să ignori clădirile-i superbe, precum Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Madama, Palazzo Carignano și, bineînțeles, echivalentul italian al palatului Versailles: La Venaria. Există tururi ghidate care-i poartă pe doritori pe acest “traseul al regalității”.

urin is probably the Italian city that sufferes the greatest amount of injustice. Whereas tourists are attracted towards the more popular and crowded Florence, Rome or Venice, Turin is wrongly ignored. Thus, few are aware of what a jewel Turin really is…a crown jewel. Literally speaking, as Turin was the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy, after the reunification in 1861 and the birthplace of the first Italian king: Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy. Turin’s magnificence can be witnessed at every corner, because even if you wanted to, you could not ignore its splendid buildings, such as Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Madama, Palazzo Carignano and of course, the Italian counterpart of Versailles Palace: La Venaria. There are guided tours that take the tourists on this ‘royal trail’.

Însă, Torino s-a bucurat pentru puțin timp de statutul de capitală, pentru că Roma a preluat această funcție în 1870, iar Torino a trebuit să se reinventeze, devenind un centru industrial - de exemplu, Torino este orașul unde s-a născut FIAT (Fabrica Italiană de Automobile Torino și nu Fix It Again Tony, cum mai glumesc germanii). În timpul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial, industrializarea intensă a transformat orașul Torino și într-unul al revoltelor sociale și al opoziției față de fascism, acestea fiind și cele care au dus la căderea regimului, marcând încă o dată destinul întregii Italii. Totodată, Torino este și unul dintre centrele culturale ale Italiei, fiind considerat orașul cinematografiei italiene. Dacă americanii au Hollywood, atunci italienii au Tollywood, în Torino filmându-se primele producţii italiene, pe la începutul anilor 1900. De asemenea, aici au fost inventate şi dezvoltate multe dintre aparatele și tehnicile care au transformat cinematografia în ceea ce este ea astăzi. Niciunul dintre turiștii care ajung în Torino nu poate ignora acest lucru, deoarece întregul oraș este vegheat de cea mai impunătoare clădire de aici: Mole Antonelliana. Aceasta găzduiește Muzeul Național al Cinematografiei, cel mai înalt muzeu din lume. Tot în Torino are loc și unul dintre cele mai importante festivaluri de film din Italia: Torino Film Festival, care se clasează imediat după Festivalul de Film de la Veneția.

Piazza San Carlo Mole Antonelliana However, Turin has enjoyed the capital status for a brief period, as Rome took over this position in 1870, while Turin had to reinvent itself, becoming an industrial hub – for instance, Turin is the birthplace of FIAT (it. Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, loosely translated as Italian Car Factory of Turin and not Fix It Again Tony, as the Germans like to joke). During the Second World War, the heavy industrialisation turned the city into a centre for social uprisings and fascist opposition, these being the reasons that led to the regime’s fall, once again marking the destiny of the entire country. At the same time, Turin is one of the Italy’s cultural centres, being dubbed the city of the Italian cinematography. If Americans have Hollywood, then Italians have their Tollywood, as Turin was the shooting set for the first Italian films, at the beginning of the 1900s. Much of the equipment and many techniques used in film industry, that helped the advancement of this sector making it what it is nowadays, have been invented and developed in Turin. No tourist arriving in Turin can dismiss this, as the whole city is watched over by the most impressive building here: Mole Antonelliana. It hosts today the National Cinema Museum, the world’s highest museum. One of the most important film festivals in Italy takes place here: Torino Film Festival, which ranks right behind Venice Film Festival.

Nu în ultimul rând, Torino este extrem de important și pentru creștinătate, deoarece aici se află Catedrala Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul, locul unde este depus Giulgiul din Torino - pânza care l-ar fi acoperit pe Isus în mormântul său și care păstrează imprimată imaginea Mântuitorului, fără de care n-am fi știut niciodată cum arăta chipul Lui. Și, dacă tot suntem la acest capitol, aici se află și Muzeul Antichității Egiptene, unde poate fi văzută a doua cea mai valoroasă colecție egipteană din lume, după cea care se află în muzeul din Cairo. Un alt loc ce nu trebuie ratat este Basilica Superga, aflată pe colinele care mărginesc orașul. Aici este și cripta familiei regale, însă cei care urcă la Superga își fac un pic de timp mai ales pentru a admira priveliștea spledidă pe care o oferă vârfurile acoperite de zăpadă ale Alpilor, ce fac zid între orizont și Torino. De fapt, numele orașului este strâns legat de această priveliște, pentru că înainte de epoca romană, zona Torino era locuită de taurini. Denumirea nu era vreo aluzie la tauri, deși în timp taurul a devenit simbolul cetății, ci provenea din cuvântul celtic “tau”, care însemna munte. Dar, Torino nu este doar un oraș al muzeelor și palatelor, dar și unul cu o viață de noapte intensă, cu multe cluburi și baruri, mai ales pe lângă malurile râului Po, care marginește orașul în partea de est. Last but not least, Turin is an important emblem of Christianity, as this is the location of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, the place that hosts the Shroud of Turin - the cloth that supposedly covered Jesus in his tomb and that has preserved the Saviour’s image imprinted, and which the source of our representations of His image is. Let’s not forget Turin Egyptian Museum has one of the most valuable Egyptian collections in the world, after the one in Cairo. Another must-see place is Basilica of Superga, located on the hills surrounding the city. The royal family crypt can be seen here, but those who climb to Superga should find the time to admire the breathtaking landscape of the snow-capped peaks of the Alps, which resemble a wall between Turin and the horizon. In fact, the name of the city is closely interlinked with the landscape, because before the Roman era, Turin area was populated by Taurini. The name was not a reference to bulls, although in time it has become the symbol of the city, but it derives its name from the Celtic word ‘tau’, which means mountain. However, Turin is not just a city of museums and palaces, but also a city with a throbbing nightlife, with many clubs and bars, especially along the banks of the Po River that borders the city in the east. Moreover, this is the neighbourhood with the most diverse culture and where you can party until dawn, having many new bars and clubs with reasonable prices. If you are hungry, remember that the best and sought-after kebab in the whole city can be bought from Horas Kebab, on Claudio Luigi Berthollet Street in San Salvario neighbourhood. In the same area you can visit the most popular park of the city, Parco del Valentino, which, during the sunny days fills with youngsters having picnics and other recreational activities. It’s worth visiting for the beautiful landscape it offers, as well, but also if you want to sit on the same little bench Enzo Ferrari used to sit while dreaming about the futuristic car models. Spuneam mai devreme unde puteți gusta cel mai bun kebab din oraș, dar dacă vreți să încercați un produs culinar inventat în Torino, atunci aflați că acesta se numește “tramezzino” și este un sandviș “patentat” de superba cafenea Mulassano (Piazza Castello 15), deschisă încă din 1907. Pe final, vă mai spunem atât, în Torino veți găsi și cea mai bună ciocolată din lume. Anual, în Torino are loc un festival dedicat ciocolatei, numit CioccolaTÒ (în 2015 s-a ținut între 20 și 29 noiembrie), unde timp de 10 zile cei mai mari producători de ciocolată premium din Italia (și nu numai) vin să-și expună produsele minunate - de la Caffarel, Streglio, Venchi, până la Lindt & Sprüngli. De asemenea, o specialitate de ciocolată inventată aici și pe care trebuie neapărat s-o încercați este Gianduiotto - bomboane de ciocolată în formă triunghiulară, a căror denumire face referire la un personaj din commedia dell’arte, ce caricaturiza locuitorul tipic al regiunii Piemont. Povestea spune că rețeta a fost inventată în timpul domniei lui Napoleon, când războaiele au făcut ca pudra de cacao să devină foarte scumpă, așa că aceasta era îndoită cu alune de pădure mărunțite, ce proveneau din nordul Italiei. Și, întocmai cum până acum nu știați cât de frumos și de interesant este orașul Torino, ați gustat fără să știți această ciocolată, doar că sub o altă formă, de cremă Nutella, care la început purta numele de Pasta Gianduja.

Every year, Turin is the host of a chocolate festival, named CioccolaTÒ (in 2015 was held between November 20-29), where for 10 days, the most important premium chocolate producers in Italy (and not only) come to display their delicious products – from Caffarel, Streglio, Venchi, to Lindt&Sprüngli. Another must-try specialty invented in this city is Gianduiotto – boat-like shaped chocolate candies, whose name refers to a commedia dell’arte mask that represents the archetypal Piedmontese. The story says that the recipe was invented during Napoleon times, when the wars turned the cocoa powder into a very expensive commodity; therefore, this was diluted with ground hazelnuts that came from northern Italy. And, just as until now you had no idea how beautiful and interesting Turin might be, you have already tasted this chocolate, without even knowing it, but under a different form, as Nutella cream, which at the beginning used to be named Pasta Gianduja.

Fascinația Meșteșugului e un pariu al unui tânăr care a dat totul pentru conservarea tradițiilor românești. Matei Pleșa, un tânăr de 25 de ani e un realizator video din Cluj care și-a pus talentul în slujba păstrării unor frumoase obiceiuri tradiționale, mai exact meserii vechi, rare, meșteșuguri pe care tehnlogia le-a cam alungat în colțul uitării. De acolo le-a scos Matei și și-a propus să le imprime pe retina spectatorilor, creând scurte documentare despre meserii tradiționale cum ar fi cele de pantofar, lutier, potcovar și altele.

The Fascination of Craft is a young man’s all-in bet designed to preserve Romanian traditions. Matei Pleșa, a 25-year-old videographer from Cluj, decided to put his talent to good use by preserving the beautiful traditional customs, those old and rare crafts replaced by the tools of modern technology. Matei brought them back to light and aimed to visually imprint them in his viewers’ consciousness by producing short documentaries about traditional artisans and their skills, such as shoemakers, luthiers, farriers and many others.

Fascinaţia Meşteşugului a apărut din dorinţa de a arăta lumii oamenii cu adevărat pasionaţi de o meserie, de un meşteşug. Cum reuşeşti să găseşti aceşti meşteşugari?

Da, proiectul a apărut din dorinţa mea de a arată lumii oamenii care sunt pasionaţi de ceea ce fac în principiu, nu aveam neapărat în minte o limitare la meşteşugari, dar aşa a fost să fie. Dorinţa aceasta a venit mai exact după ce lucrasem la mai multe videoclipuri care au avut şi un succes destul de rapid şi consistent. Mă săturasem de oameni care se gândeau doar la bani şi uitaseră de pasiune, muncă şi bucuria de a fi realizat ceva din propriile mâini. Strângând toate gândurile şi sentimentele astea negative am ajuns destul de repede să îmi doresc ceva mai uman, natural şi cald, aşa am ajuns la ideea cu documentarele despre meşteşugari. Pentru mine este foarte important ca omul şi povestea lui să mă inspire, iar dacă se întâmplă acest mic fenomen, nu mai am nevoie de foarte multe pentru a începe şi a realiza documentarul şi pozele cu meşteşugarul respectiv. De obicei, dau din greşeală peste ei pe internet, de asemenea sunt mulţi oameni care îmi scriu iar de aici mai departe încep să mă documentez şi să văd dacă meşteşugarul ar fi potrivit pentru a transmite mai departe mesajul proiectului.

The Fascination of Craft came into existence out of the wish to show the world some people who are truly passionate about their crafts, their skills. How do you manage to find the craftsmen?

The project sprang from my wish to show to the world those people who are passionate about their work. It was not my intention to limit myself to artisans, but this is how it turned out in the end. I worked on several videos that witnessed a fast and consistent success, therefore my wish came naturally. I was getting tired of people obsessing about money, people who forgot the passion, the work and the joy of having accomplished something on their own. Therefore, feeling assaulted by all these negative feelings and thoughts, it was quite natural to get to a point where I started to wish for something more humane, natural and warm, and this is how I came up with my documentary idea. To me, it is essential that the persons and their stories be inspiring - if this prerequisite is met, then I can go and produce the documentary and the photos with that respective craftsman. I usually come across them on the Internet, or via messages sent by people. I then start gathering my records and assess whether the respective craftsman would be the right person with the right story to send the project’s message into the world.

Cum ai descrie tu aceste meşteşuguri româneşti unui străin, ce crezi că diferenţiază meşteşugarii români de meşterii din alte ţări europene?

Cred că cel mai mult îmi place la meşteşugurile româneşti povestea din spatele muncii, legendele, întâmplările transmise din generaţie în generaţie. Mi se pare fascinant şi intrigant cum toate aceste zicale, poveşti şi legende s-au transmis până în ziua de azi şi chiar şi acum se pot aplica. Majoritatea poveştilor şi legendelor româneşti sunt foarte ușor de înţeles, sunt simple, clare şi tot timpul cu o învăţăminte care de fiecare dată mă uimeşte prin inteligenţă şi simplitate. Dacă aş spune toate aceste lucruri despre meşteşugul românesc unui străin va trăi acea stare de uimire, fascinaţie care te cuprinde când auzi astfel de lucruri.

How would you describe the Romanian crafts to a foreigner, is there anything different between Romanian and other European craftsmen?

What I like the most about Romanian crafts is the story behind the labour, the legends, and the events perpetuated from one generation to the next. It is both fascinating and intriguing how all the sayings, stories, legends have reached our modern times and are still applicable. Most of the Romanian stories and legends are very easy to be understood, simple, clear and always have an intelligent and uncomplicated moral, which never fails to amaze me. If I were to tell foreigners all these things about Romanian crafts, I am sure they would be stunned and fascinated about it all.

Care e cea mai inedită poveste pe care ai reuşit s-o descoperi prin intermediul proiectului?

What is the most interesting story you discovered?

Mica poveste ar fi de la ultimul documentar realizat cu ceramistul figurativ, Dan Leș, care îmi povestea că pe vremuri se spunea că olarii când lucrau la roata olarului cântau pentru a transmite spiritul tradiţional, simplu şi pur în vasul creat. Pentru mine a fost destul de puternică pentru că după ce am auzit-o mi-am imaginat cât de frumos ar fi dacă aş putea să o şi surprind.

The story is related to the last documentary I made with the figurative ceramist, Dan Leș, who was telling me that, as legend has it, back in the old days the potters were singing while they were working at the pottery wheel in order to impregnate the simple and pure traditional spirit into the newly created object. This image was quite powerful to me so I imagined how beautiful it would be if I were able to capture it on camera.

De asemenea, tinerii care au vrut să meargă să înveţe un meşteşug au dorit să înveţe de la meşteşugari care au avut deja succes. După o astfel de afirmaţie, logica ar fi că dacă am avea mai mulţi meşteşugari cunoscuţi şi meşteşuguri din care să se poată duce un trăi foarte bun, s-ar implica mai mulţi tineri.

Crezi că aceste meşteşuguri ar trebui prezentate oamenilor încă de când sunt mici ca să contribuim cumva la păstrarea vie a acestor tradiţii? Care crezi că e reţeta pentru conservarea tradiţiilor şi cum îţi imaginezi ţară asta peste vreo 50 de ani?

Da, ar fi frumos, copiii să înveţe de mici despre tradiţia noastră a românilor şi despre meşteşugurile noastre tradiţionale. Sunt unice, sunt speciale şi nu se mai găsesc nicăieri în lumea asta. Nu o spun ca şi o mândrie, o spun pentru că aşa e în fiecare ţară şi colţ al lumii şi asta face toată lumea asta interesantă şi palpitantă. De la piramidele din Egipt, până la mayasi sau vikingi, sunt nişte legende, poveşti şi tradiţii care stârnesc pasiuni şi leagă oamenii din cultura respectivă. Diversitatea asta cred eu face lumea mai frumoasă, interesantă şi palpitantă şi ar fi păcat să o pierdem. apprentices got easily bored and failed to see how they would be able to make a decent living out of it. However, there are other craftsmen who told me that they have many apprentices. It is quite interesting how young people want to learn a trade that would help them make a good living, but without too much effort. Moreover, the youngsters who wanted to learn a trade, wanted to learn it from successful craftsmen. We could therefore conclude that if we had more successful craftsmen and trades that would ensure a good living, then more youngsters would get involved.

Do you believe children should be exposed to these crafts, in order to preserve the living fire of our Romanian traditions? What would be the recipe for preserving them and how do you see Romania in 50 years’ time?

Ce alte meşteşuguri ţi-ar plăcea să mai filmezi, poveştile căror tipuri de meşteşugari ţi-ar plăcea să le descoperi?

It would be great if kids could learn about Romanian traditions and traditional crafts. They are unique, special and you cannot find them anywhere else in this world. I am not saying this because I am proud, but because this is how things are in all countries and corners of this exciting world. From the pyramids in Egypt, to the Maya civilization or the Vikings, we have stories, legends and traditions that stir up passions and bring people together. Diversity makes the world much more beautiful, interesting and thrilling, and it would be a pity losing it. The secret for preserving traditions consist in showing people how beautiful it is to live a simple life, being able to make a living by practicing the traditional trades. Not all crafts have a daily applicability, obviously, but with a bit of imagination and creativity, one can make very beautiful things, which would reinterpret the crafts and the crafted objects, just as it happens nowadays.

Mi-ar plăcea foarte mult să realizez un documentar despre un meşteşugar care face brâuri/chimire şi sper să îl găsesc cât de curând. Chimirul mi se pare un obiect tradiţional foarte frumos unde meşteşugarul trebuie să fie foarte atent, priceput şi răbdător. De asemenea mi-ar plăcea foarte mult să filmez un ceasornicar. E fascinant să vezi un om lucrând chiar şi un an de zile pentru a realiza un ceas făcut din peste 2000 de piese lucrate individual.

Care sunt cele mai importante lecţii pe care le-ai învăţat de la meşteşugarii intervievaţi?

De fiecare dată când cineva mă întreabă ce am învăţat de la meşteşugari, îmi vine să spun că tot. Ştiu foarte bine că, dacă nu aş fi stat lângă acei oameni chiar şi pentru 2 zile, nu aş fi fost omul care sunt acum. Când vezi un meşteşugar lucrând la un obiect te calmezi, uiţi de tot şi toate şi începi să îţi dai seama ce e cu adevărat important. Îţi închipui cum ar fi dacă nu ai fugi după bani, recunoaştere, şi lucruri materiale. Fără toate acestea, viaţa ar fi mult mai simplă şi clară. Îmi place să cred că de când realizez proiectul “Fascinaţia Meşteşugului” am devenit un om mai blând, calm şi am întotdeauna în minte să nu încerc să mă lupt şi să mă consum pentru lucrurile materiale.

Romania will be more beautiful and kinder, due to its simple and passionate people that, slowly but surely, will change it for the better. I believe my generation and the ones to come will have a say in this and many things will change.

What other craftsmen would you like to film, what stories would you like to discover?

I would love to produce a documentary about an artisan who makes traditional belts/girdles and I hope to find him soon. I think the girdle is a wonderful traditional object and the craftsman needs to be very attentive, quite skilful and patient. I would also like to shoot a film about a watchmaker. It is fascinating to see how a person can sometimes work for a year on end in order to finish a watch made up of more than 2000 hand-made pieces.

What are the most important lessons you learnt from the craftsmen interviewed?

Every time a person asks me what I learned from the craftsmen I have the urge of answering ‘everything’. I know that I would not be the man I am now if I had not stayed close to those people, be it even for 2 days. Observing a craftsman at work calms you down, you forget about everything and everybody and realize which the really important things in life are. You start daydreaming about how your life would look like if you were not in a never-ending chase after money, recognition and material goods. Without all these, life would be much simpler and clearer. I like to believe that since the start of my project, The Fascination of Craft, I have become a kinder, calmer person and I always have in the back of my mind the idea of never trying to fight over material things or let myself be consumed by them.

Au reușit să câștige cu două minute înainte de fluierul final, în fața Canadei, după ce au fost conduși cu 15 - 0, timp de 52 de minute. What does rugby mean to you?

Rugby is like a way of expressing yourself, a way of fighting, based on strict rules, which teaches one to respect certain values, such as integrity or discipline, mandatory when practising this sport. Rugby is also a way to learn how to be part of a team, to find the time to listen to the others and make yourself available to them.

Why would you recommend playing rugby to a child?

Perhaps the first impression of a child is that rugby is a violent sport. Only by actually playing it can that child realise that things are different. There are things in rugby that can be translated into our daily lives: to keep one’s

ground against life’s hardships, to respect the rules, because if you don’t you are punished, but when you win you are praised, which is exactly what happens in life. I would advise any child to play rugby, because he needs to be helped and, in turn, he needs to help his partners.

Why do you think that most European countries (Romania included) are more interested in football rather than rugby – which is a more spectacular game, everything revolves around the team much more than in football, rugby is more ‘manly’ and more honest?

People choose football because this is a sport with some basic simple rules, easy to understand and practised by gentlemen. The first steps children make

până la cel mai înalt nivel. Dacă ar fi să descriu în trei cuvinte evoluția rugbyului românesc este muncă, muncă și muncă. Dar munca bine organizată, gândită, o strategie coerentă în raport cu identitatea noastră și specificitatea noastră, cu problemele, bucuriile și necazurile vieții, cu toate problemele sociale și economice cu care ne confruntăm. Cred că din plăcerea de a practica acest sport am trecut peste greutăți.

Apropo de reveniri, la RWC, Stejarii au avut cea mai frumoasă revenire din istoria Cupei Mondiale, în meciul cu Canada. Ce înseamnă mai exact acest lucru pentru echipa națională, pentru viitorul ei, pentru viitoarele meciuri?

Am trecut de la statutul de rugăciuni, la cel de a crede până la capăt în ceva. Având încredere în cei din jurul tău, într-un sistem de joc, atunci a venit și răsplata eforturilor depuse. Nu a fost o întâmplare ce a fost la acel meci, a fost totuși muncă susținută de-a lungul anilor, încrederea în proiectul sportiv, în partener, răbdarea și acel lucru care se confirmă de fiecare dată: o partidă începe la primul fluier al arbitrului și se termină cu fluierul final. Nu contează că mai sunt cinci minute sau 10 secunde, trebuie să joci până la capăt și nu trebuie să ai niciun regret după aceea că nu ai încercat. Băieții noștri au încercat și au reușit.

Care a fost cel mai greu moment al Stejarilor de la RWC?

Cred că cea mai grea a fost intrarea în competiție cu Franța, pentru că după mulți ani ne întâlneam într-o competiție de mare anvergură cu profesorii noștri francezi, o echipă cotată în primele cinci din lume. A fost un meci în fața a peste 50.000 de oameni și trebuia să realizăm o performanță sportivă, o prestație foarte bună și de aceea cred că presiunea a fost mare atât asupra jucătorilor, cât și asupra celor din staff, suporteri etc. Trebuia să începem cu o performanță, nu numai cu un rezultat. Și, al doilea moment greu, a fost când am jucat în fața a aproape 90.000 de oameni, ceea ce nu s-a mai întâmplat

In the last couple of years, The Oaks have gained ground and their image is improving more and more with the public. What is the secret, how did they manage to come back in the public eye in such a spectacular manner?

There is no recipe, I think work, commitment and dedication of everyone involved in this, starting with the education of children who come for the first time on a rugby stadium and ending with those at the highest level. If I were to describe in three words the development of Romanian rugby these would be work, work and work.

Care a fost cel mai frumos moment al Stejarilor de la RWC, în afară de meciul cu Canada?

Când Florin Surugiu și-a cerut în căsătorie prietena, pentru că există și o viață în afara sportului, băieții sunt tineri, au vise pe care, pe plan sportiv, le-au realizat și urmează și cele pe plan personal. Eu consider că întemeierea unei familii este unul dintre cele mai frumoase și mai importante lucruri, pentru a te bucura în liniște de pasiunea aceasta, pe care o ai pentru sport. Atâta timp cât ai liniștea sufletească, pe care o familie ți-o dă, poți realiza foarte multe și pe plan sportiv.

Cred că în primul rând e nevoie să avem rezultate pe plan internațional, să ne batem de la egal la egal cu marile națiuni, pe care să le aducem la București, să le vadă toți oamenii în acțiune. Apoi, cred că ar mai fi nevoie și de o mai mare mediatizare a acestui sport, mai ales în mediul școlar și universitar.

În lotul Stejarilor sunt 4 jucători naturalizati (din Africa de Sud, Tonga, Noua Zeelandă și Georgia). O întrebare firească ar fi: De ce? But well-organised work, a coherent strategy designed in accordance with our identity and specificity, with life’s problems, joys and sorrows, with the economic and social issues we are facing. I think I managed to overcome the difficult times in my life due to the pleasure of practising this sport.

Speaking of comebacks, at the RWC, The Oaks have made the most impressive comeback in the history of the World Cup, during the match with Canada. What exactly does this mean for the national team and the future matches?

We have gone beyond the prayers and reached that stage where we believe in something all the way through. By trusting those around you, the structured system of the game, you will see your efforts rewarded. It was not luck that won us that match, it was tireless work over the years, confidence in the project, in your partners, patience and that thing which is confirmed every time: a game starts with the first whistle of the referee and ends with his final whistle. It does not matter that there are five minutes or 10 seconds left, you have to play the game to the end and should not have any regrets afterwards for not trying hard enough. Our boys have tried and succeeded.

What was the most difficult moment for The Oaks at the RWC?

I think the most difficult thing was to compete with France, because, after many years, we met in a large-scale competition with our French teachers,

It was a match in front of over 50,000 people and we had to deliver a great performance and I think that the pressure was on everybody: the players, the staff, supporters, etc. We had to start with a good performance. And the second most difficult moment was when we played before 90,000 people, which had never happened before in any other World Cup. It was a first for us and I believe that those nights before the match were very difficult because each one of us was thinking about it.

What was the most beautiful moment for The Oaks at the RWC, apart from the match with Canada?

When Florin Surugiu has proposed to his girlfriend, because there is a life outside sport. The boys are young, they have dreams that were achieved in the sport sector, and now other dreams have to be achieved as well. I think that starting a family is one of the most beautiful and important things in order to be able to enjoy the passion that you have for sport. As long as you have the peace of mind that a family provides, you can accomplish a lot in your profession.

In the team squad there are 4 naturalised players (from South Africa, Tonga, New Zealand and Georgia). A natural question would be: why?

Firstly because they are valuable players and they are an added value to the Romanian team. Secondly, some young players were brought in as well, together with the foreign players as the latter are regarded as role-models. We know where we have to improve our game and together with them, these young players can grow and bring something new to our game. It was not only a choice made ‘because it’s fashionable’, but a choice that matched Romania’s needs, both in terms of performance and the training of new players in order to meet the demands of contemporary rugby.

Why do you think rugby should become just as popular in Romania as it is in France or the UK?

First of all I believe we need to have great international results, to fight the big ones on an equal footing, and these results will be brought back to Bucharest and displayed so that everybody could see them. Moreover, I think greater media coverage is needed, especially in schools and universities.

Lângă bijuteria de preț a Transilvaniei este și o comună cu un castel care a trecut prin atâtea povești, mai că am vrea să-i dăm glas și să-l punem în dreptul unui microfon. Castelul Bánffy a fost contruit pe domeniul donat familiei cu același nume de către Sigismund de Luxemburg. Fiecare nou membru al familiei restaura castelul și adăuga elemente noi construcției. Asta până în 1944 când a ajuns să fie folosit ca spital militar La terminarea războiului, castelul a fost jefuit și incendiat. În perioada comunistă, castelul a suferit mult, țăranii luând cărămizi din clădire, parcul de lângă Someș a devenit pășune și alte acțiuni care au dus la degradarea construcției, din care Muzeul de Artă de la Cluj a salvat ce-a mai putut. De curând, castelul și-a reintrat în perioada de glorie, fiind atracția principala a turiștilor veniți la Electric Castle, un festival de muzică electronică. Întregul concept al festivalului este construit în jurul castelului, devenind o emblemă culturală a unui eveniment care atrage zeci de mii de turiști. Anul acesta, castelul strălucește pe ritmuri electronice în perioada 14-17 iulie, un moment bun să veniți să-i auziți povestea acestui castel ușor de asemuit cu pasărea Phoenix care a renăscut din cenușă.

In the immediate vicinity of Transylvania’s jewel, there is a village with a castle that has so many stories to tell, that it would be easier to give it a voice and a microphone. Banffy Castle was built on the domain Sigismund of Luxembourg had donated to the Banffy family. Each new family member restored the castle and added new elements to the building, until 1944, when it ended up as a military hospital. Once the war was over, the castle was devastated and set on fire. Later on, during the communist period, the castle witnessed serious damages as the peasant villagers stole part of its bricks, the park on the banks of Somes River became a grazing land for the farmers’ animals and many other ill-intentioned actions that degraded the building. The Cluj Art Museum tried to salvage whatever it could and the castle has recently regained a part of its former glory, being the main attraction for the tourists taking part in the electronic music festival Electric Castle. The whole concept of the festival is created around the castle, supporting the latter in becoming the cultural icon of an event that attracts tens of thousands of tourists. This year, the castle will shine on electronic beats over 14th and 17th July, a perfect time to come and listen to the phoenix-like story of the castle.

În zona Iașiului veți găsi, specific zonei, mânăstiri și obiective legate de vin. Fără o legătură evidentă, aceste două componente sunt atracțiile principale ale locurilor din apropierea frumosului oraș Iași. Muzeul Viei și Vinului e un spațiu viu, un loc în care vizitatorii au ocazia să descopere cultura vieții românești și obiceiurile din zona Hârlău. Muzeul aduce în lumina reflectoarelor și vechiul „drum al vinului”: din cramă în pivniță, din pivniță în piață sau în alte țări. Iar un alt deliciu pentru vizitatori este și arsenalul țăranilor care-și făceau vin în casă. Iar după lecția de istorie, puteți trece la partea practică a vinului, mai exact o vizită la podgoria și crama Cotnari, locul de unde ia naștere unul dintre cele mai cunoscute vinuri românești. Legenda spune că această regiune a fost binecuvântată cu mult soare plasat strategic de Dumnezeu astfel încât strugurii să fie cât mai dulci. Without any obvious connection between them, these two elements are the main attractions of the areas around Iasi. The Museum of Vineyard and Wine is a living space where visitors get the chance to discover the Romanian culture and the customs in Harlau area. The museum brings in the limelight the old ‘wine route’: from the wine cellar to the cellar, from the cellar to the market or abroad. Another delicacy for the tourists is the equipment used by the peasants in making their own wine. Following this theoretical history lesson, you can visit Cotnari vineyard and wine cellar, the birthplace of one of the most famous Romanian wines. Împrejurimile Bacăului oferă vizitatorilor o gură de aer proaspăt. Cel mai bine se simte asta în apropierea Slănic Moldova, o zonă verde cu natură bogată și cu izvoare minerale care să vă revita lizeze întregul organism pe cale naturală. Tot în apropierea Bacăului mai e un obiectiv pe care nu trebuie să-l ratați: Castelul Familiei Știrbei. Doar un drum de o oră de la Bacău până la Dărmănești și puteți vizita frumosul castel al familiei Știrbei. Cocoțat pe deal, apărat de păduri de foioase și conifere, se află acest castel din cărămidă care a fost și palat, și loc de refacere pentru aviatorii români din Al Doilea Război Mondial, dar și sanatoriu TBC. Cireașa de pe vârful castelului este zona pitorească în care e amplasat și impresionantul parc din jurul clădirii de unde se poate purcede spre diverse trasee, culminând cu urcarea muntelui Nemira.

The neighbourhoods around Bacau offer visitors a breath of fresh air. You can feel this best in a region around Slanic Moldova, a green area with mineral springs that rejuvenate your body. Another unmissable attraction is the Stirbei Castle, which is just one hour-drive from Bacau to Darmanesti. Erected on a plateau, hidden away by deciduous and evergreen forests, this brickmade castle used to be a palace and recovery place for Romanian aviators in the Second World War, but also a TB sanatorium. The most interesting thing is the area where the castle is located - the impressive park around the building, which is the starting point of various trails through the forests nearby and the Nemira Mountain.

Asta vă așteaptă la rezervația naturală Comana, un parc protejat datorită speciilor de faună și floră găsite aici. Sunt 3 mari zone speciale pe care să le bifați în această oază verde: rezervația de bujor, rezervația de ghimpe (ambele fiind plante strict protejate de legislația românească) și Balta Comana. Tot în parc există și mă-

năstirea Comana, construită pe ruinele unei mănăstiri ctitorită de legendarul Vlad Țepeș (1461). Pe lângă peisajele desenate de natură, puteți să vă plimbați cu barca sau cu caiacul, să vă odihniți privirea uitându-vă la arborii seculari, să luați guri de aer curat plimbându-vă pe traseele prin pădure, dar poate aveți și norocul să întâlniți un animal sau o pasăre dintre toate cele identificate și protejate. Dacă ați obosit, puteți chiar să vă cazați în rezervație.

Bucharest is often associated with chaos. Therefore, a road trip to a green and quiet area is more than welcome: Comana natural reserve awaits you – a park protected due to its fauna and flora species that are present here. There are three main areas that have to be ticked in this green oasis: the wild peony reserve, the butcher’s-broom reserve (Ruscus aculeatus) (both being protected under Romanian law) and Comana Pond. The Park hosts Comana Monastery, built on the ruins of a former monastery erected by legendary Vlad Tepes (1461). Apart from the breathtaking landscapes, you can take a boat or a kayak trip on the lake, admire the secular trees, enjoy the clean and fresh air by talking long walks on the forest trails, where you might be lucky and meet an animal or a bird of those identified and protected. If you get tired, you can find accommodation in the reserve.

Turistului ce abia îl descoperă, Stockholm îi oferă numeroase atracţii: prima oprire pe care trebuie să o faceţi este fără îndoială la clădirea primăriei – una dintre prezenţele definitorii pentru silueta urbană, cu turnul său de la înălţimea căruia puteţi admira o privelişte încântătoare a întregului oraş.

După ce aţi bifat aceste prime puncte turistice, vă puteţi petrece restul sejurului savurând spiritul Stockholmului, aşa cum este el definit la întâlnirea dintre modernitate şi calm. Capitala Suediei se prezintă, astfel, vizitatorilor săi ca un loc în care poţi respira cu uşurinţă, şi în care te poţi linişti şi regăsi.

În continuare vă puteţi petrece ziua plimbându-vă prin cartierul Gamla Stan. Parcurgând străduţele sale înguste şi şerpuitoare printre case pitoreşti de culori diferite, vă veţi simţi transportaţi înapoi în timp în secolele 14-15, perioada fondării nucleului oraşului Stockholm.

Arhitectura scandinavă, şi cu precădere cea din Stockholm, nu se îndepărtează nici ea de la aceste principii. Caracterizată de gesturi constructive raţionale, de sustenabilitate şi de dimensiunile umane ale clădirilor, practica arhitecturală contemporană se inspiră din binecunoscutul design scandinav.

Orice tur al Gamla Stan trebuie să includă Palatul Regal, reşedinţa oficială a regelui Suediei, construită în stilul Baroc Italian. Una dintre cele mai mari clădiri de acest tip din lume, are peste 600 de încăperi ce găzduiesc, printre altele, şi muzeul Arsenalului, muzeul de antichităţi şi muzeul Tre Konor. Alte atracţii din zonă sunt Muzeul Medieval, Catedrala, biserica Riddarholmen precum şi Muzeul Nobel.

Nu veţi găsi aici opulenţa, grandoarea sau exuberanţa altor metropole de pe mapamond, ci adecvare la mediul înconjurător, alegerea unor materiale durabile şi a unor soluţii fireşti la cerinţele utilizatorilor, precum şi o grijă vădită pentru calitatea spaţiului public.

To those tourists who are in Stockholm for the first time, the city provides plenty of attractions: the first stop is undoubtedly the building hosting the city hall – one of the architectural landmarks in the urban landscape, with its high tower offering a breathtaking view over the city.

After having ticked all of the above, you can spend the rest of your holiday enjoying the spirit of the city, as it is defined by the encounter of modernity and calm. Sweden’s capital presents itself to its visitors like a place where you can actually breathe, relax and re-discover yourself.

Afterwards you can spend the day by taking a walk through the Gamla Stan neighbourhood. Its narrow and winding little streets and picturesque houses in various colours will carry you back in time in the 14th- 15th centuries, when the foundations of the city were laid. Any tour of the Gamla Stan should include the Royal Palace, the official residence of the King of Sweden, built in Italian baroque style.

The Scandinavian architecture, especially in Stockholm, does not diverge from these principles either. Characterised by rational constructive gestures of buildings’ sustainability and human dimension, the current architectural trend is inspired from the well-known Scandinavian design.

One of the largest buildings of its kind in the world, it has over 600 rooms hosting, among other things, the Treasury, the Museum of Antiquities and the Tre Konor Museum. Other attractions in the area are the Medieval Museum, the Cathedral, the Riddarholmen Church and the Nobel Museum.

It is not the place where you can find the luxury, grandeur or exuberance of other cities, instead, there is suitability to the environment, the choice of durable materials and natural solutions for the users’ requests, as well as a visible care towards the public space quality.

Lucia – Luciadagen – pe 13 decembrie, precum şi târgurile de Crăciun de la Skansen. Although Sweden, just as the other Scandinavian countries, has the reputation of a snow-covered country with endless winters, Stockholm enjoys a milder climate, which can be proved by the numerous festivals held there year round: National Day – Nationaldag – on the 6th of June, when the royal family visit the Skansen open-air museum to meet representatives of various charitable organisations, the Midsummer – Midsommarafton – held on the next Friday following the 24th of June, St Lucy’s Day – Luciadagen – on the 13th of December, as well as the Skansen Christmas fairs.

Muzeul galo-roman își plimbă oaspeții prin fascinanta istorie a galilor și a obiceiurilor acestora. Muzeul este la doi pași de situl arhitectural al Teatrului Antic Fourvière și Odeonului din fostul Lugdunum, „Muntele Dorit”, denumirea din antichitate a ceea ce a fost unul dintre cele mai importante orașe ale Imperiului Roman, după Roma. Acestea au fost, în vremea lor, cele mai importante atracții din Lugdunum, fiind apoi lăsate abandonului și decăderii, ca mai apoi să fie restaurate de o echipă arheologică în 1933. Acum, pe dealul Fourvière, vă puteți plimba în acest amfiteatru impresionant și puteți descoperi frumoasele pietre colorate care au fost folosite pentru construcția odeonului, dovadă că romanii nu făceau rabat de la lux.

The Gallo-Roman Museum takes its visitors through the fascinating history of the Galls and their customs. The museum is just at a stone’s throw away from the architectural site of the Ancient Theatre of Fourvière and the Odeon of the former Lugdunum, ‘the hill of the light’, the ancient name of one of the most important Roman cities. These were the most important attractions from Lugdunum at the time, later on being forsaken and subject to serious degradation, while in 1933 were rehabilitated by an archaeological team. Nowadays, you can take a walk through the impressive amphitheatre on Fourvière Hill and discover the beauty of the colourful cobbles used for building the Odeon, a proof that the Romans did not spare any effort to live in luxury. Make sure you do not miss the mosaic displaying an arena during a chariots race, one of the very few such representations still preserved from the ancient times.

Poate un lucru mai puțin cunoscut, dar Lyon-ul este orașul de unde pornea comerțul cu mătase în perioada renascentistă. În secolul XVI, Lyon-ul a devenit capitala mătăsii în Europa, astfel și un important jucător economic al țării. Fabric Museum din Lyon găzduiește o colecție de obiecte rare din mătase și din alte materiale: covoare persane, tapițerii din secolul III, textile țesute cu fir de aur și alte curiozități din ceea ce a fost cândva una dintre principalele resurse economice ale Lyon-ului. Tot o mostră a opulenței din perioada Renașterii poate fi admirată și la Muzeul Artelor Decorative, loc în care au fost recreate scene și situații reale din viețile familiilor bogate ale vremii. Tacâmuri de argint, colecție de ceasuri vechi, tapițerii fine, toate aceste pot fi admirate în muzeul artelor frumoase.

Soierie Vivente este o asociație care și-a propus să nu lase un meșteșug care a adus faimă Lyon-ului să dispară. Astfel, Soierie Vivante oferă turiștilor șansa de a participa la workshop-uri de țesătorie, dar și de a vedea tot ce s-a păstrat din această artă a secolul XIX. Țesătorii și mașinile lor de război au avut o istorie tumultoasă, pe la începutul anilor 1800 retrăgându-se în zona Croix Rousse unde și-au creat o adevărată comunitate de prelucrare a mătăsii și a altor materiale. Acum, vizitele la Soierie Vivante oferă turiștilor felii din această istorie îmbârligată, dar și experiența acestui meșteșug tradițional. Astfel, numele ales pentru aceste activități, ”mătase vie” e unul mai mult decât potrivit pentru toți cei care vor să trăiască pe pielea lor ce a însemnat acestă comunitate pentru istoria și cultura Lyon-ului.

Frații Lumiere sunt cei cărora trebuie să le mulțumim pentru toate filmele minunate, pentru toate serile petrecute sub pătură cu ochii la serialele preferate. Ei dețin patentul cinematografiei, fiind creatorii primului film în adevăratul sens al cuvântului, în 1895. Muzeul dedicat lui Auguste și Louis Lumiere este la Lyon, asta pentru că acesta e orașul în care cei doi frați au început să se joace în atelierul de fotografie al tatălui lor și de unde au pus bazele pentru ce urmau să inventeze. Muzeul Lumiere este chiar în casa tatălui celor 2 și prezintă fascinanta lume în care s-au scufundat creatorii cinematografiei. Cele mai importante descoperiri, proiecții, filme, camere și tot arsenalul care a dus filmul animat în viețile oamenilor poate fi văzut la acest muzeu interactiv situat în casa familiei Lumiere, o construcție elegantă și superbă cu detalii arhitecturale demne de surprins în poze.

Lyon, alături de Berlin, este capitală europeană la capitolul picturilor murale, pereți decorați cu fresce care înfrumusețează orașul și care oferă noi atracții turiștilor. Lyon este unul dintre cele 5 mari orașe din lume care se poate lăuda cu numărul impresionant de picturi murale. Fiecare pictură este contextualizată și pornește de la istoria locului, frescele devenind astfel un fel de tablouri cu misiune culturală, imagini care vorbesc și care povestesc despre viața zonei în care sunt amplasate. Una dintre cele mai faimoase picturi murale ale orașului este Fresque des Lyonnais, un conglomerat colorat care portretizează 30 dintre marile personalități ale Lyon-ului. Pe o suprafață de 800 m2 zâmbesc din frescă următorii: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry - autorul nemuritoarei povești ”Micul Prinț”, împăratul roman Claude, Paul Bocuse - un mare artist culinar, Louise Labé - poeta Renașterii, frații Lumiere, dar și alte personalități laice sau reprezentați de seamă din medicină, literatură și alte arte.

Not many people might know about this, but Lyon was the city where the silk trade sprang its roots during the Renaissance period. In the 16th century, Lyon became the European silk capital and an important economic player of the country. The Fabric Museum hosts a collection of rare items made of silk or other valuable fabrics: Persian rugs, 3rd century tapestry, gold-woven textiles and other curiosities of what used to be one of the main economic resources of the city. One can also take a glimpse at the Renaissance luxuriance while visiting the Decorative Arts Museum, a place where the atmosphere of an 18th-century wealthy family home was recreated. Visitors can admire the silverware, an old clocks collection or fine tapestries.

Soierie Vivante is an association that sets forth to safeguard the craft that had brought fame upon Lyon, therefore it provides tourists with the chance of taking part in weaving workshops and seeing the remnants of this heritage. The weavers and their looms had a stormy history as, at the beginning of the 19th century, they had withdrawn in the Croix Rousse area, where they had created a real community that processed silk and other fabrics. Nowadays, the Soierie Vivante visits give tourists the opportunity to enjoy a slice of this tempestuous history and to experience this traditional craft. Thus, ‘living silk’, the name chosen for this kind of activities, is a perfect one for all those who wish to learn about the silk weavers’ community and its significance in Lyon’s history and culture.

We need to thank Lumiere brothers for all the wonderful films and for all the evenings spent under the blanket watching our favourite TV series. They patented the cinematograph and created the first motion picture in 1895. THE FIFTH STOP THE MURALS OF LYON Together with Berlin, Lyon is the champion city of mural paintings – decorated walls that embellish the city and offer new attractions to its tourists. Lyon is one of the world’s five large cities that can boast an impressive number of murals. Each painting is placed into context and everything starts with the history of the respective area, thus, the paintings become pictures with a cultural mission, or images that tell about the life of the neighbourhood they are placed in. One of the most famous murals of the city is Fresque des Lyonnais, a colourful mix with portraits of 30 well-known Lyonnais. On an 800-sqm area visitors can smile back to: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry – the author of the immortal ‘Little Prince’, the Roman Emperor Claudius, the French famous chef Paul Bocuse, the Renaissance poet Louise Labé, Lumiere brothers and many other public figures from medicine, literature and other arts.

Aici, în așa numitul "Kwartier Latäng" (Cartier Latin) puteți trăi după motto-ul - "Din pub în pub". Bine de știut este că în această zonă cluburile și localurile sunt adaptate după gusturile studenților, așa că prețurile sunt accesibile. În zonele Friesenplatz și Barbarossaplatz, noaptea, bulevardele de shopping se transformă sâmbătă seară în adevărate locuri de ieșit. No other German city has as many pubs as Cologne. The central clubbing scene has established around Zülpicher Straße and Luxemburger Straße. Here, in the so-called ‘Kwartier Latäng’ (Latin Quarter) you have the chance to do some serious pub-crawling. It is worth mentioning that the clubs and venues in this area cater to students’ tastes, therefore the prices are affordable. The shopping avenues in Friesenplatz and Barbarossaplatz areas turn into real going out mile every Saturday night. Locals have dubbed these streets ‘Die Ringe’ and you can party on hip hop, R&B and house-music tunes.

Früh Brewery - are un iz turistic, însă dacă tot vă aflați în Köln, atunci trebuie să încercați berea locală, nu? Și ce loc mai potrivit decât o berărie? Comandați-vă un Kolsch și nu o să vă pară rău. The Roxy - legenda spune că „toate sufletele pierdute" se duc la Roxy la final de noapte. S-a redeschis în urmă cu câțiva ani și ține în mod regulat concerte live cu nume mari din industria muzicală. Papa Joe's Jazzlokal - unul dintre cele mai vechi baruri de jazz din Germania, oferă concerte de jazz și swing în fiecare seară, dar și duminica după-amiaza. Intrarea este liberă.

The line-up is constantly changing and you will always have the chance to attend various concerts – from pop and punk to reggae and retro rock. Früh Brewery - it has a touristy air, but given that you are in Cologne, why don’t you give the local beer a try and what better place to do this than a beer house? Order a Kolsch and you will not be sorry. The Roxy - legend has it that ‘all lost souls’ go to Roxy at the end of the night. It has been re-opened a couple of years ago and it hosts regular live concerts with famous musicians. Papa Joe's Jazzlokal - one of the oldest jazz clubs in Germany hosts jazz and swing gigs every night and Sunday afternoons. There is no entrance fee.

Andrei Mihai Cristian are aproape 30 de ani și s-a născut la Târgoviște. E de profesie Web Designer și are mare drag de fotografie, motiv pentru care și-a creat site-ul dinmers.ro. Am auzit de Andrei în clipa în care am văzut fotografiile pe care le-a făcut pentru proiectul Urban Swan, cel în care grația unei balerine este pusă în contrast cu rigiditatea orașului. Știam cât de mult muncește o balerină, iar imaginile confirmă încă o dată acest lucru. Andrei a reușit să creeze o serie de astfel de imagini și a cucerit o lume întreagă. Ne-am dorit să-l cunoaștem mai bine pe Andrei, dar și să înțelegem cum a început proiectul Urban Swan, așa că am stat de vorbă cu el.

Nu a fost ușor, dar dorința de a comunica prin fotografie a fost mai mare decât obstacolele neștiinței și ale nemulțumirii de sine. În ceea ce privește prima fotografie, el o consideră pe cea care i-a rămas la suflet și anume Serenitate.

URBAN SWAN

Proiectul cu balerine a luat naștere din dorința de a arăta oamenilor munca impresionantă pe care o depun cei care cunosc succesul, muncă pe care cei mai mulți dintre noi nu o observă. „Balerina reprezintă imaginea grației, a sublimului, iar străzile prăfuite ale Capitalei, cotidianul, adică orele grele de trudă pentru a reuși. Am pornit proiectul la începutul anului, în iarnă, iar ideea mi-a venit de la documentarul «Prima Poziţie» -povestea a şase tineri dansatori care se pregăteau pentru cea mai prestigioasă competiţie din lume, Youth America Grand Prix. De aici și pasiunea pentru balerine” Scopul Urban Swan a fost acela de a ilustra ideea de succes, dar și un îndemn de a analiza o persoană înainte de a o critica.

CELE TREI PĂRȚI

Proiectul Urban Swan este format din trei părți: Black, White și Începuturi, plus un epilog Tradiții. Locurile fotografiilor au fost alese în antiteză cu grația și delicatețea balerinei. Fix asta și-a dorit Andrei încă de la început: un contrast puternic care să pună în evidență idea de succes prin muncă. „Primele doua părți au fost realizate împreună cu Ana Maria, pe care o cunoșteam de ceva vreme. Împreună am creat scenariul și am ales locurile din Bucureşti. Îmi amintesc că era iarnă atunci când am realizat prima parte. Frig de crăpau pietrele, iar Ana, îmbrăcată cu un body negru, transparent, executând mișcări artistice în văzul oamenilor, care se opreau să o admire, înfofoliți până în gât. Îmi înghețaseră mâinile pe aparat,

dar ambiția ei mă făcea să uit de tot și să surprind fiecare moment. La un interval de cinci luni a venit și a doua parte, Urban Swan White - de data asta pe o căldură insuportabilă”, își aduce aminte fotograful. În viziunea lui, Andrei terminase proiectul, când o colegă de muncă l-a întrebat dacă nu vrea să fotografieze „o fetiță foarte expresivă” a unei prietene. „Atunci am avut acea sclipire de moment și mi-am zis că un copil, prin inocența sa, poate să reliefeze mai puternic ideea de bază a proiectului: contrastul dintre urban – cotidianul, care implică acele ore infinite de muncă și finețea artei – rezultatul, succesul, împlinirea. Așa s-a născut a treia parte, Începuturi”, povestește Cristian. Andrei a mărturisit și cum Anca a dat dovadă de multă tărie de caracter, mai ales că în ziua cu pricina îi fusese rău și nu mâncase nimic (era ora 17.00). „Faptul că nu s-a dat bătută până la ultimul cadru, m-a făcut să înțeleg mai bine ce înseamnă sacrificiul pentru artă”, a spus Andrei.

SUCCESUL

Urban Swan a ajuns cunoscut internațional, iar Andrei mărturisește că nu se aștepta ca proiectul să aibă un asemenea impact. Prima bucurie a fost atunci când proiectul a ajuns pe BoredPanda. „Reușisem pentru prima dată să comunic o idee prin fotografie și aceasta să fie apreciată în întreaga lume. Mulţi apropiați nu au ştiut că proiectul este al meu, de ceilalți nu mai spun. Asta mi-am şi dorit, ca el să ajungă în sufletele oamenilor, nu eu”, a mărturisit Andrei. Urban Swan este un proiect încheiat, iar Andrei mărturisește că o expoziție sună bine și ar face-o, însă doar în scop caritabil. Urmează alte idei, pe care le va expune prin fotografie și pe care abia așteptăm să le vedem.

the grace of a ballerina against the city Andrei Mihai Cristian is almost 30 years old and was born in Targoviste. He is a Web Designer and a photography aficionado, which is why he designed dinmers.ro.

I heard about Andrei when I saw the photos he had taken for the Urban Swan project, illustrating the grace of a ballerina in stark contrast with the rigidity of the city. I knew how much a ballerina has to work and the images re-confirm this. Andrei managed to create a series of photos that conquered the entire world. We wanted to get to know Andrei better and understand how the Urban Swan project started; therefore, we invited him for a chat.

THE FIRST PHOTO

Andrei told us that he has been taking photos for as long as he can remember, however it was only three years ago that he started to take his passion seriously, as a form of expressing himself. He therefore started to read about composition, technique and other recommendations from professional photographers. It was not easy, but his desire to communicate through images was more powerful than the barriers of ignorance and self-dissatisfaction. He considers his first photo to be the one that is the dearest to his heart, Serenitate (Serenity).

URBAN SWAN

This ballerina project was born from its author’s wish to show people the impressive work behind success, the endless hours of labour which may pass unnoticed to many of us. ‘A ballerina is the epitome of grace, sublime, while the dusty streets of Bucharest represent our daily urban landscape, the hard work behind success. I started the project last winter, at the beginning of the year, and the idea came from the ‘First Position’ documentary, which tells the story of six young dancers preparing for the world’s most prestigious ballet competition, Youth America Grand Prix. Hence my passion for ballerinas.’ The goal of Urban Swan was to assign an image to the idea of success, but it also represents a call to get to know people before criticizing them.

THREE PARTS

Urban Swan project is comprised of three parts: Black, White and Beginnings, plus the epilogue, Traditions. The shooting settings were chosen in stark contrast with a ballerina’s grace and suavity, as this was the idea the whole project was based on: a powerful contrast, which would highlight the idea of success achieved through very hard work.

‘The first two parts were realized in collaboration with Ana Maria, whom I already knew for a while. Together, we created the setting and selected the most appropriate spots for shooting in Bucharest. I remember that the first part was shot during winter. It was biting cold and Ana, dressed in a transparent black body suit, was executing artistic postures in front of various overdressed passers-by who stopped to admire her. My hands were stiff with cold, but her determination made me forget about it all and capture every moment. Five months later, the second part was created, Urban Swan white, but this time in an unbearable heat’ says the photographer. Andrei considered the project finished, when a colleague of his asked him to take some photos of a ‘very expressive little girl’ of a friend of hers. ‘It was then that I had an epiphany and realized that an innocent child can emphasize in a very powerful manner the essential idea of the project: the contrast between urban – daily life implying all those endless hours of hard work and the suavity of this art – the outcome, success and achievement. This is how Beginnings, the third part of the project, came up’, recounts Cristian. Andrei confessed that Anca proved her grit, especially because she had been sick that day and she had not eaten anything (it was 5 PM). ‘She did not give up and posed until the last moment, and this made me understand better what sacrifice in the name of art really means’, said Andrei.

SUCCESS

Urban Swan hit the international headlines and Andrei admits he did not expect his project to have such an impact. The first recognition came when the project managed to be included on the BoredPanda website. ‘I had managed to render an idea through a photo for the first time in my life and to be praised around the world. Not many friends or acquaintances knew that the project was mine. That was the point – it was the project that was supposed to reach people’s hearts, not me’, confessed Andrei. Urban Swan is a closed project and Andrei told us that the idea of a photo exhibition is not that far-fetched; he might just do this, but only for charitable purposes. Other ideas will follow and he will transpose them in photos that we are really looking forward to see!

În România avem astfel de artiști de care suntem mândri.

When walls come to life: Romania’s street artists The world street art has witnessed a controversial path. Street artists work very hard, quite often in secret, and the result of their work becomes true art, which would totally change the look of a certain place. We have many such artists in Romania whom we are very proud of.

A luat naștere în 2010 și este o echipă formată din cinci grafferi români, fiecare cu un stil unic, dezvoltat în peste 15 de ani de muncă în acest domeniu. În prezent, echipa este formată din Cage, Biex, LostOptics, Recis, Pandelee si Boeme, iar din crew face parte si un MC, Macanache - cel mai fresh rapper la ora actuală în peisajul hiphop autohton. „Vrem să mergem și spre zona de tatuaje și spre publicitate, fiindcă printre noi sunt și absolvenți de design de produs, care au și cunoștințe de arhitectură sau editare foto. Încercăm să facem o echipă complexă cu care să ajungem în mai multe locuri, dar la baza tuturor acestor gânduri stă graffitiul”, spun cei de la SDC.

It came into being in 2010 and its team counts five Romanian graffiti artists, each with his own personal styles, developed throughout more than 15 years of experience in this field. Currently, the team is formed of Cage, Biex, LostOptics, Recis, Pandelee and Boeme, as well as an MC, Macanache – the newest rap singer in the Romanian hip-hop environment. ‘We would like to experiment with tattoo and advertising sectors as well, because some of us have graduated from product design departments and have sound knowledge of architecture or photo editing. We try to form a complex team that would be able to reach many directions and places, but the core idea of everything is the graffiti’, say the SDC members.

Vine din Târgoviște și a terminat Universitatea Națională de Arte. El experimentează cu forme și suprafețe și creează personaje cu trăsături și caracteristici distincte, care pot exista atât ca reprezentări bi-dimensionale, dar și obiecte 3D. Acestea au ajuns atât pe strada Arthur Verona în cadrul festivalului Street Delivery 2014, dar și în paginile cunoscutei enciclopedii Pictoplasma – Character Portraits [Berlin, Octombrie 2014], alături de designeri de personaje din întreaga lume. În 2010, împreună cu Titi Ciocan, au realizat primul art toy românesc, Sando by Eldercut™, o jucărie de 21 cm, care putea fi customizată și colecționată.

He comes from Targoviște and is an alumnus of Bucharest National University of Arts. He experiments with shapes and surfaces and creates characters endowed with distinct traits and features, which may exist as both two-dimensional representations as well as 3D objects. These characters were displayed on Arthur Verona Street during the Street Delivery festival in 2014, but also in the pages of the well-known encyclopaedia, Pictoplasma – Character Portraits [Berlin, October 2014], alongside other character designers worldwide. In 2010, together with Titi Ciocan, he created the first Romanian toy art, Sando by Eldercut™, a 21 cm toy that could be customized and collected.

PISICA PĂTRATĂ SQUARE CAT A început să lucreze în urmă cu 10 ani atras de libertatea oferită de genul acesta de artă, iar în street art a găsit o formă de evadare de la un traseu artistic oarecum previzibil. Libertatea spațiului public și anonimatul au fost ingrediente perfecte pentru o joacă care s-a dovedit cea mai serioasă creație a sa. „Lucrările mele fără un mesaj evident la prima vedere sunt doar personaje care populează unele locuri din urban. Poate chiar lipsa acestui mesaj se poate constitui într-unul fiind niște semne de exclamare pentru a atrage atenția asupra unor zone părăsite sau a unor anomalii din oraș”, spune artistul.

Absolvent al Facultății de Arte, și-a început cariera artistică în Cluj, în The Playground, unul din primele grupuri de street art din România. De-a lungul vremii, Saddo și-a rafinat și dezvoltat stilul și subiectele în compoziții mai elaborate. Ultimele sale proiecte includ prima sa expoziție personală, “Rise of the Bird People” într-o galerie mică dintr-un orașel din Portugalia, expoziția duo „Coffins”, împreună cu Aitch la La Petite Mort Gallery, Ottawa, și a doua sa expoziție personală, „A Stranger in the Garde” la BC Gallery, Berlin în 2015. A graduate of Art Faculty, he began his artistic career in Cluj, in The Playground, one of the first street art groups in Romania. In time, Saddo polished and developed his style and topics into more elaborate works. His latest projects include his first solo-show ‘Rise of the Bird People’ exhibited in a small gallery in a city in Portugal, ‘Coffins’ duo-show with Aitch at La Petite Mort Gallery, Ottawa, and his second solo-show ‘A Stranger in the Garden’ at BC Gallery, Berlin in 2015.

He started working 10 years ago, attracted by the freedom implied by this type of art and street art gave him the possibility to escape a predictable artistic path. Public space freedom and the anonymity were the perfect ingredients for a game that proved to be his most serious creation so far. ‘My works do not have an obvious, immediate message; they are just characters inhabiting some of our urban spaces. Perhaps the lack even of such a message represents a trigger to redirect the attention towards some of the deserted, derelict areas in the city or anomalies present in the urban space’, says the artist.

OBIE PLATON

Kero are 15 ani de când colindă Europa și colorează verticale. Tehnic vorbind, el este muralist. „Spațiul meu de manifestare sunt pereții, iar scopul meu este să ofer oamenilor o perspectivă nouă asupra realității pe care o trăim”, spune Kero. Lucrează împreună cu Obie Platon și Irlo sub numele de NOM (novus ordo muralis), iar proiectele făcute împreună au un caracter foarte puternic cu un impact social ancorat în evenimentele de zi cu zi.

A studiat arhitectura la Universitatea Ion Mincu din București și a început activitatea artistică în anii 2000. A dezvoltat cinci personaje și stiluri, fiecare fiind reprezentativ pentru un element - pământ, aer, apă, foc și univers. Este cunoscut în mod special pentru Allan Dalla, simbol al pământului și geometriei, un mix de artă kinetică și suprarealism, dar și Prințul Pop, abordarea freestyle care dezvăluie comercialul, agresivitatea și ironia în structura socială și comportamentul uman. În intervențiile sale în spațiul public este interesat de două mari aspecte: relația cu orașul și relația cu oamenii prin mesajul transmis. He studied architecture at the Ion Mincu University in Bucharest and started his artistic activity in 2000. He created five characters and styles, each being representative of a basic element – earth, air, fire, water and universe. He is renowned mostly for Allan Dalla, an earthy symbol of geometry, a mixture of kinetic art and surrealism, but also Pop Prince, a freestyle approach revealing the commercial, aggressiveness and irony within our social structures and human behaviour. In his public space interventions, he is mainly interested in two major topics: relationship with the city and relationship with the people throughout the message he tries to convey.

Kero has been travelling around Europe for 15 years, painting vertical spaces. Technically speaking, he is a muralist. ‘My working space is the wall and my purpose is to give people a new perspective of the reality we all live in’, says Kero. He works together with Obie Platon and Irlo under the name of NOM (novus ordo muralis) and their joint projects have a very powerful social impact based on current events.

Artisul a început în ’96, ’97 cu grafitti, iar după 2000 a trecut la figurativ și streetart. Operele sale sunt de dimensiuni mari, unde predomină optimismul și culorile cât mai vii. „Când am trecut de la ilegal la proiecte comisionate am prins gustul de mare și nu mi-a mai trecut. Lucrez cu încă doi muraliști, iar împreună ne numim Noua Ordine Murală”, spune Irlo. Irlo a avut trei situații cunoscute în media ca și controversate: Poneiul Roz de la ICR New York în 2008, Calcanul muzeului Brukenthal, șters la nici o săptămână de la terminare și Sf. Gheorghe, șters după trei zile. „Nu punem la suflet, natura fenomenului e oricum efemeră așa că nu ținem cu dinții să rămână veșnic. Numai dragostea.” He started with graffiti in the 1996 -1997 period, while after year 2000 he made the switch to figurative and street art. His large-scale are predominantly optimistic and brightly coloured. ‘When I switched from illegal works to commissioned projects I got the taste for large scale paintings. I work together with two other muralists and we are jointly named the New Mural Order’ says Irlo. Irlo was the main character in three controversial issues: The Pink Pony of the New York Romanian Cultural Institute in 2008, the Brukenthal Museum blind wall, effaced after just one week and St George, effaced after 3 days. ‘We do not take it personally, this phenomenon has a fleeting nature anyway, we do not insist to keep it there forever. Să te lupți pentru un Cod Silvic care să protejeze pădurea, să creezi legi bune pentru natură când e cazul, să descoperi biodiversitatea ultimelor păduri virgine din Europa. Să reintroduci specii – zimbri – și să ai grijă ca altele să nu dispară – urși, râși, sturioni. Să oferi tot sprijinul necesar tinerilor, pentru a înțelege că ei sunt cheia unui viitor în armonie cu natura.

WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) is a wildlife conservation association present on the international arena for more than 50 years and with a history of almost 10 years in Romania. What does ‘wildlife conservation’ mean? It means carrying out ecological restoration projects, given that the Danube we enjoy has the only freeflowing stretch of water. It also means fighting for a Forestry Code that would protect the woods, devising laws that are good for nature, discovering the biodiversity of the last remaining virgin forests in Europe, rewilding lost species – European bisons – and making sure other species do not become extinct – brown bears, lynxes or sturgeon. Providing all necessary support to the young generations, as they represent the key for a future in perfect harmony with nature.

Ultimii sturioni sălbatici viabili din Europa se află în Dunărea Inferioară, segmentul împărțit de România și Bulgaria, dar sunt pe cale de dispariție din cauza pescuitului ilegal. Apăruți pe vremea dinozaurilor, ei sunt un simbol al Dunării, dar și un indicator foarte bun al sănătății fluviului. WWF lucrează pentru a proteja sturionii din Dunăre, dar fiecare poate contribui, cumpărând doar caviar cu eticheta CITES (Convenția privind comerțul internațional cu specii sălbatice de faună și floră pe cale de dispariție) și refuzând sturionii proaspăt pescuiți din Dunăre.

UNESCO world heritage site, the Danube Delta hosts over 85% of the bird species in Romania and the largest colony of pelicans in Europe. Together with the locals who already understood that their future and wellbeing depend on natural resources, WWF is involved in ecological restoration projects in several areas drained during the communist era, such as Mahmudia. The last viable populations of wild sturgeons in Europe are preserved in the Danube river basin, in the stretch shared by Romania and Bulgaria, but they are currently teetering on the edge of extinction because of illegal fishing. Sturgeons have outlived the dinosaurs, they are a true symbol of the Danube and a valuable indicator for a healthy river. WWF is protecting the sturgeon populations of the Danube, but each of you can contribute to their protection by only buying caviar with CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) labelling instead of sturgeon that was recently fished in the Danube.

Păduri virgine Virgin forests

n România există mai mult de jumătate dintre pădurile virgine rămase în Europa pentru care WWF, cu ajutorul societății civile, a reușit să asigure în 2012 cadrul legal necesar care să le asigure protecția. Ce sunt pădurile virgine? Sunt ultimele zone de pe glob în care natura supraviețuiește în forma sa pură, fără intervenție umană. Sunt tărâmuri unde trăiesc arbori de sute de ani și specii rare de plante și animale (lupi, râși, urși bruni). În prezent, WWF cartează aceste păduri, astfel fiind identificate și protejate zeci de mii de hectare de păduri virgine, printre care cea de la Șinca Veche (Brașov) și cea de la Strâmbu-Băiuț (Maramureș). Oricine poate contribui la protejarea pădurilor, prin programul „Adoptă un urs” (urs.wwf.ro). De asemenea, puteți redirecționa 2% din impozitul pe venit (informatii puteți afla cu un mail pe office@wwfdcp.ro).

Zona e atât de frumoasă, de importantă din punct de vedere natural, încât Prințul Charles a comandat o copie a Colinelor Transilvaniei în grădina proprie.

În Maramureș, WWF și-a concentrat eforturile pentru certificarea zonei Mara-Cosău-Creasta Cocoșului ca destinație națională de ecoturism. Tot aici, sprijină o asociație de fermieri să se dezvolte și să obțină un acces mai bun pe piața alimentară pentru produsele lor HNV (High Nature Value) – obținute prin metode tradiționale ce întrețin diversitatea naturală.

WF coordinated the inventory of species and habitats of European importance in Hartibaciu Plateau, in order to understand the wildlife conservation needs. The area is so beautiful and of such significance, that Prince Charles ordered a replica of the Transylvanian hills in his own garden. In Maramures, WWF focused on a project aiming to get the Mara-CosăuCreasta Cocoșului area certified as national eco-tourism destination. Here, WWF supports a farmers’ association to develop and have better access to markets for their HNV products (High Nature Value) – obtained via traditional methods that maintain the natural diversity.

Zimbri Bisons

imbrul (Bison bonasus) e astăzi o specie mai rară decât rinocerul negru, în lume trăind numai 5000 de zimbri, aproape jumătate în captivitate. În România, zimbrul dispăruse de 200 de ani. În 2014 a fost reintrodus în Munții Țarcu (Carpații Meridionali), grație unor eforturi comune WWF și Rewilding Europe, împreună cu locuitorii din Armeniș (Caraș-Severin). Alte 18 exemplare provenite din mai multe țări europene au fost aduse anul acesta, cu toții urmând să se bucure în curând de libertate deplină, după perioada de acomodare.

owadays, the bison (Bison bonasus) is a species that is rarer than the black rhino, as there are only 5,000 bisons left in the whole world, almost half of them living in captivity. The bison had been extinct on Romanian territory for almost 200 years. In 2014, the bison was reintroduced in Tarcu Mountains (Southern Carpathians), due to a joint initiative of WWF and Rewilding Europe, together with the local community from Armenis (CarasSeverin). WF lucrează cu tineri de toate vârstele, deoarece e important ca tânăra generație să fie mai aproape de natură. Un exemplu îl reprezintă cei peste 100 de liceeni din mai multe localități bănățene care învață alături de profesori și WWF despre natura sălbatică. Învață că în Carpații Meridionali, se află cea mai întinsă zonă de sălbăticie din Europa, de 300.000 de hectare, și că acolo nici viaţa speciilor, nici peisajul nu sunt modificate de către oameni.

WF is cooperating with young people of various ages, as it is important for the next generation to be closer to nature. One example is the group of 100 high-school students from several cities in Banat region who are learning about wildlife from their teachers and WWF volunteers. They are learning that the Southern Carpathians have the largest wildlife area in Europe, of almost 300,000 hectares, and the species living there or the landscape are truly left untouched by humans.

Nu doar un salvamontist, dar şi un alpinist pasionat, Ciprian Lolu îşi trăieşte viaţa pe vârfuri de lume, ca într-un dans cu natura nestăvilită. Not only a mountain rescuer, but also a passionate climber, Ciprian Lolu lives his life on the world’s heights, like in a dance with the unleashed nature. Cu siguranţă aţi fost întrebat de zeci de ori, dar ce anume v-a motivat să alegeţi această meserie? A fost o alegere sau un concurs fericit de circumstanţe? Întorcându-mă în timp, îmi dau seama cât de interesant este felul în care omul îşi găseşte aşa zisul loc al său. Deşi copil fiind visam să fiu mecanic de locomotivă, ulterior am urmat facultatea de matematică-fizică la Cluj cu gândul că voi ajunge în învăţământ. 2 ani mai târziu am schimbat „macazul” şi mi-am început activitatea de salvator montan. Cred că nimic pe lumea aceasta nu este întâmplător şi alegând să îmi dedic viaţa acestui scop îmi conferă utilitate, iar asta nu voi regreta niciodată.

Aţi urcat pe schiuri împreună cu alpinistul bucureştean Horea Popescu pe vârful Muztagh Ata (7.546 de metri), al doilea vârf din Tibet ca înălţime, înregistrând astfel o premieră naţională în schi-alpinism. Ce a reprezentat această experienţă pentru dumneavoastră? Ce impact a avut asupra dumneavoastră, atât pe plan profesional, cât şi personal?

În urmă cu 7 ani, când am ajuns pentru prima dată pe un vârf de 7000m altitudine (Khan Tengri) mi-am spus că dacă ar fi să mai fie vreunul, mi-aş dori să îl urc pe schiuri de tură. Astfel încât, atunci când am aflat că nimeni din România nu a mai urcat pe Muztagh Ata, am fost convins că acela este! Am plănuit, muncit şi gândit acest proiect încă de atunci. Horea a fost scânteia. Răspunsul lui la visul meu a venit fără şovăială: „Hai să o facem!”. Legat de actul cuceririi în sine, nu pot

spune că l-am conştientizat în acele clipe când am ajuns pentru prima dată pe vârf. Nici a doua zi de altfel, când am urcat iar alături de Horea şi nici mai târziu. Pe plan profesional pot spune că am atins un punct culminant al unei activităţi montane îndelungate, de peste 15 ani şi care îmi conferă credibilitate. Personal? Momentele de satisfacţie sunt poate prea scurte în comparaţie cu munca din spatele lor.

Ne puteţi relata o poveste amuzantă, o anecdotă, din experienţele pe care le-aţi trăit la înălţime?

Desigur, sunt multe de povestit. Unele scot în evidenţă lucruri mai puţin plăcute, dar există altele pozitive, amuzante. De exemplu, am salvat odată un om care căzuse, avea tot felul de lovituri, zgârieturi, hainele rupte, dar era conştient. Iar la întrebarea „Cât ai căzut?”, răspunsul lui ne-a adus zâmbetul pe buze: „Să fie undeva pe la 10-15 secunde”.

Care sunt, în opinia dumneavoastră, cele mai spectaculoase trasee montane din România?

Nu v-aş putea da un răspuns exact. Cred că fiecare munte îşi are farmecul lui şi că de cele mai multe ori din nimic poţi vedea ceva spectaculos. Evident că aş înclina spre locul meu de suflet şi unde îmi desfăşor activitatea, adică Parcul Naţional Piatra Craiului. Totul este spectaculos pe versantul vestic. Dar am văzut zone cu trasee spectaculoase şi în Bucegi, Făgăraş, Retezat sau chiar în Apuseni.

You have surely been asked dozens of times, but what made you choose this profession? Was it a choice or a fortunate circumstance?

Thinking back on it, I realise how interesting is the way a person finds his/her place. Although as a kid I was dreaming about becoming an engine driver, later on I attended the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in Cluj, assuming that I would end up a teacher. However, two years later I changed paths and started the mountain rescue activities. I believe that nothing in this world is accidental and choosing to dedicate my life to this job gives me purpose, which I could never regret.

Together with Horea Popescu, a climber from Bucharest, you went ski touring to the top of Muztagh Ata (7.546 meters), the second highest peak in Tibet, marking this way a national breakthrough in ski touring. What did this experience mean to you? What impact did it have on you, both professionally and personally?

Seven years ago, when I first reached a 7.000-metre-high peak (Khan Tengri) I knew I would reach higher, but this time I would be ski touring. Later on, when I found out that no Romanian has ever been on Muztagh Ata, I was certain that that was it! So I started planning, arranging and devising the journey. Horea was the spark. His answer to my dream came

unhesitatingly ‘Let’s do it!’. With respect to the ascension itself, I cannot say I was fully aware of reaching the peak when I actually did. Neither was I on the second day, when I climbed it again with Horea, nor later. Professionally I can say that I have now reached the top of my 15-year long career, which gives me more credibility. Personally? Those moments of satisfaction are too short compared with the work behind them.

Could you tell us a funny story from your high-altitude experiences?

There are of course a lot of stories to tell...even too many. Some of them are less pleasant, but there are also others which can be thought of as funny.

For instance, I once saved a man who had fallen, he was hurt, he had many bruises, his clothes were torn, but he was conscious. And when I asked him ‘How long was the fall?’ his answer made us smile: ‘I would say between 10 and 15 seconds’.

In your opinion, which are the most spectacular mountain trails in Romania?

It’s difficult to say. I believe every mountain has its own charm and, most of the times, out of the blue you can see something spectacular. Obviously, I would recommend the place which is dear to my heart and where I perform my daily activities, namely Piatra Craiului National Park. Everything is

Ce sfat aveţi pentru împătimiţii de drumeţii montane şi escaladă? Ce trebuie făcut în cazul în care ne rătăcim? Cum scăpăm de o avalanşă?

a întâlnit gazda, iar ea te poate accepta sau nu. Dacă îţi dă de înţeles că nu ai ce căuta acolo pleci, mulţumit că ai înţeles situaţia, iar dacă el pleacă, înseamnă că te-a acceptat. Pornind de la acest raţionament, mi-am creat o anumită etică montană care spune clar: RESPECTĂ NATURA, respectiv muntele, cu tot ce implică el. Legat de disciplinele montane, cum ar fi escalada, pot spune că sunt sigure dacă respecţi ABC-ul disciplinei date, fără să discutăm despre partea de siguranţă care ar trebui să fie fundament. Cum scapi de o avalanşă? Evit-o!

În 2004, din păcate, am avut parte de o experienţă legată de o avalanşă din care ulterior am învăţat multe. Cu siguranţă nu poţi scăpa de o avalanşă, dar poţi în schimb să o eviţi, să încerci pe cât posibil să nu te expui şi să alegi zonele cât mai sigure din acest punct de vedere.

Starting from this judgement, I have devised some mountain ethic principles which state clearly: RESPECT THE

NATURE, including the mountains and everything it comprises. Speaking of mountaineering subjects, such as climbing, I would say that these are pretty safe, provided that you respect the ABC’s of the respective subject and pay attention to the safety rules, which are crucial. How to escape an avalanche? Avoid it! Unfortunately, in 2004, I lived an avalanche-related experience which taught me a lot. Obviously, you cannot escape an avalanche, but what you can do is try and avoid it, by choosing a safer area instead.

O alternativă a teatrului românesc instituţionalizat, teatrul independent şi-a făcut apariţia în contextul cultural românesc de peste 25 de ani şi aduce spectacole dintre cele mai inovative, curajoase şi originale. Radu Popescu, directorul teatrului independent, a avut amabilitatea de a ne povesti mai multe despre acest fenomen.

Aţi absolvit Facultatea de medicină generală Carol Davilla în 2000 şi UNATC – Regie Teatru în 2007. Ce anume a determinat această schimbare pe plan profesional? Aveţi şi astăzi convingerea că aţi făcut alegerea potrivită?

Am fost pasionat de teatru de când mă ştiu. În liceu scriam teatru – una din piesele scrise atunci, la doar 17 ani, a ajuns să ia nominalizare la „Piesă Anului” la Gala UNITER din 1995 – 1996. Am continuat să scriu teatru şi în Facultatea de Medicină, am înfiinţat trupa de teatru a facultăţii... Iar într-o perioada mai dificilă din cariera mea am decis să îmi încerc norocul la Regie Teatru, unde am intrat pe locurile cu taxă. Nu, nu regret schimbarea făcută. Este greu, dar cred că am făcut alegerea corectă pentru mine. Chiar dacă mai am când şi când nostalgii cu privire la caracterul nobil al practicii medicale, cred că ceea ce mă defineşte cel mai bine ca om, munca în care mă regăsesc cel mai bine este scrisul pentru scenă – Dramaturgia. Mai mult decât Regia sau Managementul Cultural pe care le practic în paralel.

Ce înseamnă teatrul pentru dumneavoastră şi cum situaţi teatrul independent în contextul cultural românesc?

Pentru mine teatrul e totul, după cum o dovedeşte şi povestea dramatică a schimbării mele profesionale. Deşi mai nou cochetez şi cu ideea de a face film. Teatrul Independent începe încet-încet să pătrundă, să se remarce ca o voce puternică şi credibilă, în mod cert mai vie şi mai dinamică, faţă de teatrul instituţionalizat. Pe măsură ce câţiva oameni cu har reuşesc să pună la punct teatre independente care reduc treptat decalajul tehnic, uman şi financiar faţă de instituţiile oficiale – aceste diferenţe vor fi tot mai mici şi se vor întoarce în favoarea instituţiilor independente.

Am avut plăcerea de a viziona «Testament», ultimul dumneavoastră proiect, recent repus în scenă. Am ieşit din sala de spectacol fericită şi încărcată de emoţie. Piesa tratează teme fundamentale, controversate, are un tempo remarcabil şi ne lasă cu o nevoie de introspecţie profundă. Cum s-a născut acest proiect?

BEHIND THE SCENES OF INDEPENDENT THEATRE

As an alternative to the institutionalized Romanian theatre, the independent theatre made it appearance on the Romanian stage more than 25 years ago and it continues to enchant its audience with some of the most innovative, courageous and original performances. Radu Popescu, the director of the independent theatre, agreed to tell us more about this phenomenon.

You graduated from the Carol Davila University of Medicine in 2000 and the National University of Theatre and Film - Theatre Directing in 2007. What exactly triggered this change in your professional career? Do you still believe you made the right choice? I have been passionate about theatre since as long as I can remember. When I was a high school student, I used to write theatre plays - one of them, written when I was only 17 years old, came to be nominated as the ‘Play of the Year’ at the 1995 – 1996 UNITER Gala. I kept on writing theatre plays while I was studying Medicine where I set up the theatre company of the faculty... And during a more difficult period of my career I decided to give Theatre Directing a try - and I was admitted on the fee-based places. I do not regret the change in career paths. It is difficult, but I believe I have made the right choice for myself. Despite the fact that I wistfully think of the noble purpose of medical profession, from time to time, I believe that the thing that best defines me as a person, the activity I recognise myself in, fully and completely, is stage directing – playwriting – more than Directing or Cultural Management in which I am currently involved.

What does theatre mean to you and where would you place independent theatre within the Romanian cultural context?

Theatre means everything to me, and I have the dramatic story of my changing professions to prove it. However, I have recently started to toy with the idea of film making as well. The independent theatre starts to slowly enter the cultural environment; it starts to have a stronger and more credible voice, definitely more dynamic than the institutionalised theatre. As a few talented people manage to set up independent theatres that would gradually narrow the technical, human and financial gap against the state institutions - these differences will be smaller and smaller and will become an advantage for the independent institutions.

o viaţă mai lungă şi de succes, aşa cum consider că merită. Cred că este unul din acele proiecte care vor rămâne în urma mea, de mare valoare. Geneza textului, nominalizat în 2010 la „Irish Embassy Award for Emerging Romanian Playwright”, este complexă şi se pierde în timpul de acum 6-7 ani. Există un nucleu ”fierbinte” personal în această geneză, iar ideea a venit atunci când m-am întrebat : „Cum ar fi să pun aceste două persoane, inspirate din viaţa reală şi nu tocmai, să se întâlnească, să îşi ciocnească personalităţile ?”. Tematica LGBT a fost ultima chestiune care m-a preocupat şi mi-a dat mari bătăi de cap atunci când am scris şi rescris textul (la prima punere în scenă, în 2010) împreună cu actriţele la repetiţii. Dar mă bucur că toate acestea s-au întâmplat şi că am ajuns până aici, cu acest spectacol actual, într-o formă care face cinste teatrului independent.

«România 2050», o manifestare de teatru itinerant, a avut premiera în noiembrie şi deşi diferită de Testament, intrigă la fel de mult, surprinde, are forţă, atinge coarde sensibile ale societăţii româneşti şi conform unui spectator uimit, «ar trebui să se joace la Naţional şi să fie obligatorie». Ce ne puteţi spune despre ea? Zilele acestea am rememorat lucrul la „România 2050”. Textul s-a născut foarte rapid, în câteva zile de la începutul lui 2014. M-a distrat atunci să scriu un text cu o tematică „patriotică”, cu dedicaţie pentru Concursul de Dramaturgie al UNITER. Nu mi-am făcut prea multe speranţe la acel concurs, şi nici nu am obţinut nimic, în schimb textul a fost nominalizat şi remarcat foarte serios la Concursul „Yorick” din vara aceluiaşi an. Apoi anul acesta mi-a venit ideea trăsnită să fac un spectacol pe acest text într-un spaţiu monument istoric sau muzeu, în care viitorul fictiv din text să fie pus faţă în faţă cu „trecutul glorios” şi palpabil al ţării. Proiectul a avut câştig de cauza la AFCN şi aşa s-a născut spectacolul, pe repede înainte (am repetat doar aproximativ 3 săptămâni la el!). Şi chiar dacă, din motive organizatorice obiective, a trebuit să renunţăm momentan la partea itinerantă şi muzeală, spectacolul se susţine şi se pare că are un impact puternic asupra spectatorilor. Caracterul itinerant se păstrează ca potenţial – practic noi putem juca acest spectacol cam în orice spaţiu, oricât de neconvenţional.

Colaboraţi cu oameni pasionaţi de teatru şi împreună aduceţi bucurie miilor de spectatori prezenţi în sălile de spectacol. Care este cea mai mare satisfacţie pe care o aveţi, atât dumneavoastră cât şi echipa cu care lucraţi, la sfârşitul unui proiect?

Din păcate nu prea ştim să ne bucurăm cum trebuie de munca noastră. Suntem traşi în toate direcţiile de tot felul de obligaţii şi de cerinţe economice. Noi, pe de altă parte, ştim întotdeauna ce „n-a fost bine” chiar şi atunci când spectatorii sunt foarte încântaţi sau impresionaţi de rezultat. Am învăţat, cu greu, să ascundem aceste insatisfacţii din spate atunci când avem contact cu publicul după reprezentaţii. Cea mai mare satisfacţie cred că este atunci când ştii că ai dat totul pentru proiectul acela, cum a fost la „România 2050”, la care am realizat atât de multe într-un timp atât de scurt. Sau lacrimile din vocea oamenilor după o reprezentaţie cu „Testament”... Atunci ştii că nu e degeaba.

fact that I was writing a text with a ‘patriotic’ topic, dedicated to the UNITER’s Playwriting Contest. I did not get my hopes up for that contest and I did not win anything, however my text was nominated for the ‘Yorick’ contest in the summer of the same year. And this year I got this crazy idea of staging a show based on this text using as backdrops historical monuments or museums, where the fictional future would be confronted with the country’s tangible ‘glorious past’. The project was successful with the National Cultural Fund Administration and the show was created on fast forward (we have had only three weeks to rehearse). Due to objective organizational reasons, we had to temporarily give up travelling and the museum setting, but even so, the show is staged and it seems to have a strong impact on its audience. Its itinerant feature will be preserved – basically, we can perform this show anywhere, no matter how unconventional the location.

You collaborate with theatre aficionados and together you bring joy to thousands of people. What is your and your team’s greatest satisfaction at the end of a project? Unfortunately, we do not know very well how to enjoy our work. We are trapped in all kinds of duties and financial requirements. Nevertheless, we always know ‘what went wrong’, even when the public is delighted or impressed with the outcome. We had trouble learning how to hide these dissatisfactions whenever we meet our public after the performance. The greatest satisfaction is when you become aware that you have given your best for that respective project. This was the case with ‘Romania 2050’, in which we have accomplished so many things in such a short time, or the tears in people’s voices after a ‘Testament’ performance…And this is the proof that things we do are not in vain.

I had the pleasure to see ‘Testament’ - your latest project - recently re-enacted for the stage. I came out of the theatre hall happy and excited. The play tackles essential and controversial topics, has a remarkable tempo and leaves the public in a need for deeper introspection. How was this project created?

It is an older project, very dear to my heart, which I attempted to stage twice. I hope this production, which benefited from EEA grants will have a long and successful life, as it well deserves. I think it is one of those high value projects that I will stand the test of time. The origin of the text nominated in 2010 for the ‘Irish Embassy Award for an Emerging Romanian Playwright’ is complex and gets lost in the past. The origins have a ‘hot’ personal core and I came up with the idea when I asked myself ‘How about if I make these two people, partly inspired by the real life, meet each other and have a clash between their personalities?’ LGBT topic was the last issue that concerned me and it really gave me a hard time when I wrote and re-wrote the text (during the first staging in 2010) with the actors at the rehearsals. However, I am happy all these happened, I managed to end up here and now, with my current play, which truly honours the independent theatre.

The initial performance of ‘Romania 2050’, an itinerant theatre show, took place in November and, though different than Testament, it is just as intriguing and surprising, it is powerful and strikes a deep chord with the Romanian society. As somebody from the audience put it, ‘it should be staged at the National Theatre and should be mandatory’. What can you tell us about it? I have recently remembered as I was working on ‘Romania 2050’. The text was created very fast, within a couple of days, at the beginning of 2014. I was quite amused at the time by the

22 years of VUNK, 22 years of songs written ONLY in Romanian. Why don’t you sing in other languages?

Firstly, because we love Romanian. We think, feel and respect the language and we are trying to speak it correctly, at the same time trying to promote this through our texts. Some years ago we tried to write in English, but we could not create the same puns, the same ‘images’ as we did in Romanian. Our texts are visual and we have initiated many famous collocations throughout our career. I do not know if we would have been able to do this in a foreign language.

În primul rând, pentru că iubim limba română. O gândim, o simțim, o respectăm încercând să o vorbim corect și să propunem asta și prin textele pieselor noastre. Am încercat acum câțiva ani să scriem și în limba engleză, dar nu putem construi aceleași jocuri de cuvinte, aceleași „imagini” cum putem face în română. Textele noastre sunt foarte vizuale și am lansat o mulțime de sintagme de-a lungul carierei noastre. Nu știu dacă am ști să facem asta și în altă limbă.

De patru ani toamna vine cu un concert VUNK la Sala Polivalentă din Capitală. De la an la an, ați adus inovații tehnologice din ce în ce mai spectaculoase, ați spus și ați scris povești de neuitat pentru VUNKomunitate. Spune-ne care a fost momentul care vi s-a lipit de suflet, din fiecare an, și de ce.

Spectacolele anuale de la Sala Polivalentă sunt cele mai importante concerte ale noastre, pentru că acolo ne dăm un soi de examen în fața publicului. Acolo punem în scenă toată imaginația, emoția și energia noastră, acolo creăm lumea pe care ne-o dorim și în care sperăm să se regăsească și publicul nostru. Au fost multe momente importante sau emoționante. Am complotat pentru o cerere în căsătorie făcută în timpul concertului, pentru un cuplu de fani. Am dat un record mondial de a opri timpul într-un spectacol, timp de un minut. Am zburat cu un pian prin sală, am traversat sala într-un felinar uriaș, am avut invitat un rockstar autentic, celebru în toată lumea, pe Eric Martin, solistul trupei Mr. Big, am creat Orașul Minunilor și am deschis Un Nou Univers. Multe dintre inovațiile tehnologice pe care le-am făcut în premieră pentru piața românească de spectacol sunt folosite acum și în spectacolele altor artiști, iar asta ne bucură.

The last four autumns began with a VUNK concert at Sala Polivalenta in Bucharest. From one year to another, you have improved your technologies, which are becoming more and more spectacular, you told and wrote unforgettable stories for your VUNKommunity. Could you share with us some of the most special moments and tell us what makes them special?

These annual events at Sala Polivalenta are our most important concerts, as we pass there some kind of exam in front of our audience. This is where we set our imagination free, where we release our feelings and energy and create the world we wish for and in which we hope our public would find itself. There were many important or emotional moments. We plotted to stage a marriage proposal for two of our fans during one of our concerts. We set a world record by stopping the time for a minute, during a show. I flew with a piano through the concert hall, crossed the venue in a huge lamp, we invited Eric Martin, the worldfamous genuine rock star, Mr. Big’s lead singer, we created the City of Wonders (Orașul Minunilor) and opened a New Universe (Un Nou Univers). Many of the technological innovations we used in our shows were a first for the Romanian showbiz and they are now used by other artists in their own shows, which makes us very happy.

Cornel, in almost all your concerts held at Sala Polivalentă you literally had, your ‘high’ moments. Which one of them did not let you ‘get away without thrills’?

The most interesting one was in 2015, when not only was I being elevated above the audience, but also I was flying over it, suspended almost 6 metres above the ground. I have a slight fear of heights, but nothing else mattered when I was up there, with thousands of people in front and below me.

Cornel, în aproape toate concertele voastre de la Sala Polivalentă ai avut momente la propriu „la înălțime”. Care dintre acestea nu te-a lăsat „să scapi fără emoții”? Cel mai delicat a fost cel din 2015, în care nu doar mă înălțam deasupra sălii, ci și înaintam, zburând peste public, suspendat la aproape șase metri. Am o ușoară teamă de înălțime, dar n-a mai contat nimic în momentul în care m-am văzut acolo, cu mii de oameni în fața mea și sub mine.

Cum caracterizezi VUNKomunitatea?

How would you describe the VUNKommunity?

I believe they are the mirror of our music, a blend of joy, energy, feeling, friendship, longing and attitude.

‘I want a country like abroad’ (Vreau o țară ca afară) is one of your hits. If we were to make a list of features that distinguish Romania from other countries, how would it look like?

Cred că sunt oglinda muzicii noastre, un amestec de bucurie, energie, emoție, prietenie, dor, nostalgie și atitudine.

Our talent to adapt to all situations, the innate ability to make friends easily while we overlook the sad moments of our lives; our humour and the power of revival.

„Vreau o țară ca afară” este numele unuia dintre hiturile VUNK. Dacă ar fi să alcătuim o listă cu atributele României în fața oricărei alte țări, care ar fi acestea?

What song of yours do you recommend passengers for the take off? What about the landing?

Talentul de a ne adapta oricărei situații, avem un instinct nativ de a ne împrieteni ușor și de a trece cu vederea ce ne doare; umorul specific, puterea de renaștere.

Ce piesă din repertoriul propriu recomanzi pasagerilor pentru decolare? Dar pentru aterizare?

Pentru decolare, cred că cea mai potrivită este „Fă-mi cu mâna”. Iar pentru aterizare, „Un Nou Univers”. Ambele se regăsesc pe „Hituri și mituri” noul nostru album.

Care sunt destinațiile de vacanță europene preferate de membrii trupei VUNK?

Mie îmi place foarte mult Europa și încerc să văd cât mai mult din ea și să revăd o parte dintre locurile preferate deja, de pe bătrânul continent. Aș vrea să merg mai des la Londra, Roma și Lisabona. Dar vreau să văd Irlanda, Suedia și Berlinul. Gabi, pentru că are familia în Canada, călătorește foarte des peste ocean. Nicu și Bogdan sunt și ei fani Europa.

În 2016 aniversați 23 de ani de VUNK și 5 ani de când organizați show-ul de la Sala Polivalentă. Care vă sunt planurile pentru acest an festiv? Acum suntem în înregistrări pentru noul album, „Un Nou Univers”, pe care plănuim să îl lansăm la începutul primăverii. Legat de spectacolele de la Sala Polivalentă, venim cu o veste foarte mare. Dar toate la timpul lor.

For the take off I believe the most appropriate is Wave to me (Fă-mi cu mâna), while for the landing A new universe (Un Nou Univers). Both songs are on our new album, Hits and Myths (Hituri și mituri).

Which are the European holiday destinations preferred by the members of the band?

I like Europe a lot and I am trying to visit as many places as possible and re-visit some of my favourite cities on the old continent. I would like to go to London, Rome and Lisbon more often. Nevertheless, I would also like to visit Ireland, Sweden and Berlin. Gabi, given his family is in Canada, travels quite often across the ocean. Nicu and Bogdan are also fans of Europe.

In 2016 you celebrate your 23rd anniversary as a band and 5 years of Sala Polivalenta concerts. What are your plans for this festive year?

We are currently recording for our new album ‘A New Universe’ which we plan to launch in spring. Regarding the concerts at Polivalenta, we will have some great news. However, there is a right time for everything.

Gruia Dragomir Printr-o campanie de succes pe Kickstarter, doi români (Petre Crăciun și Ligia Stan) au reușit să obțină finanțarea pentru realizarea unei biciclete pliabile care va cântări cât 4 ananași (6,5 kg). Bicicleta poartă numele de Hummingbird Bike (Pasărea Colibri), iar ideea a apărut în urmă cu câţiva ani în Bucureşti.

Through a successful Kickstarter campaign, two Romanians - Petre Craciun and Ligia Stan, succeeded in raising the necessary funds to make the lightest folding bicycle that would weigh as much as four pineapples (6.5 kg). The bike is called Hummingbird and the idea came up a few years ago, while they were in Bucharest.

„Ligia locuia la etajul 4, într-un bloc cu un lift minuscul, în care încăpeau două persoane lipite. Am încercat să-i cumpăr o bicicletă pliabilă, ca să o introduc în lumea cicliştilor, însă cea mai uşoară astfel de bicicletă avea 10 kg, un sfert din greutatea Ligiei. De aici mi-a venit ideea să construiesc eu o bicicletă.”, spune Petre.

IATA’s goal is to ensure proportionate and coherent environmental policies are implemented by governments around the world to support the sector’s sustainability and has several programs to assist airlines in improving their environmental performance.

THE IMPORTANCE OF IATA

‘To this day, global standards are at the core of the work of both IATA and ICAO. They are as important today as they were when we were founded. Today 100,000 flights will take off and land safely. And that happens every day as a million people and about 150,000 tonnes of cargo are transported to their destinations over a dense network of 54,000 routes reaching literally every corner of the planet. Dar datorită activităţilor IATA, care coordonează munca companiilor aeriene, industria poate să creeze plusvaloare. Ce aşteaptă pasagerii şi consumatorii acestei industrii de la companiile aeriene? Răspunsul fundamental este siguranţă şi securitate. Cer şi ca mediul înconjurător să fie protejat. DEZVOLTAREA INDUSTRIEI TRAFICULUI AERIAN ÎN 2016

Am căutat în rapoartele de piaţă ale IATA şi vă anunţăm cu încredere că pasagerii şi consumatorii traficului aerian vor experimenta o creştere substanţială a valorii pe care acest tip de transport îl oferă. Acest lucru este, bineînţeles, posibil doar datorită muncii colective desfăşurate de membrii IATA. Blue Air anunţă deci, cu mândrie, că este parte din această asociaţie, o asociaţie care schimbă industria traficului aerian în bine, industrie ce, la rândul ei, schimbă lumea. Rapoartele mai menţionează că deschiderea de noi destinaţii va creşte cu 2,2% în 2016 şi la fel se va întâmpla şi cu frecvenţa rutelor. De asemenea, se aşteaptă că 1% din PIB-ul global să fie cheltuit pe transport aerian, asta însemnând în jur de 750 milioane de dolari. Traficul aerian este aşteptat să prezinte o creştere de 6.9% în 2016, cea mai bună creştere din 2010 încoace, mult peste creşterea medie din ultimii 20 de ani, de 5,5%. Această creştere este susţinută, în principiu, de creşterea economiei per total, prognozată pentru 2016. Preţul biletelor aeriene însă, este şi el un factor foarte important. Un bilet dus-întors, în medie (fără taxe şi impozite), este cu 61% mai ieftin în 2016 decât acum 21 de ani (inflaţie ajustată). Consumatorii, aşadar, pot beneficia în 2016 de preţuri mai scăzute şi companiile aeriene vor avea posibilitatea, datorită creşterii economice, să investească în avioane noi, care sunt mai comfortabile, mai silenţioase şi mai ecologice.

KEY AVIATION INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENTS IN 2016

From the economic outlook reports published by IATA we are happy to inform our readers that consumers will see a substantial increase in the value they derive from air transport this year due to the collective work of IATA and its members. Blue air is proud to be part of this important association as of 2016 and be part of an association that changes the aviation industry, and part of an industry that changes the world. New destinations should rise 2.2% this year, with frequencies up too. We expect almost 1% of world GDP to be spent on air transport in 2016, totalling almost $750 billion. Air travel is accelerating, with growth of 6.9% expected next year, the best since 2010, well above the 5.5% trend of the past 20 years. This is being driven mainly by forecast stronger economic growth. But price is also attracting consumers. The average return fare (before surcharges and tax) in 2016 is forecast to be 61% lower than 21 years earlier, after adjusting for inflation. Consumers are thus going to benefit from lower fares, and airlines will be able to invest in new aircraft that are more comfortable, quieter and more environmentally friendly.
