Dear Premier Club Member, Summer is a time for discovery. This past week I was at the FlowRider speaking with a family who introduced me to their shy nine-year-old daughter. The family was from West Boca taking a staycation at their kids’ favorite hotel. I asked the little girl if she was going to surf and she immediately retreated from the FlowRider to a chaise lounge and from its safe confines said, “No.” The parents let me know she was timid when it came to new things but her brother more than compensated for her lack of adventure. I introduced her to Andrew, one of our incredible lifeguards and he told her he would help her; she politely declined. Hours later, one of our associates texted me a picture; it was of a smile that could light up Boca: she surfed for the first time. A West Boca family will never forget this moment as their little girl left her comfort zone while on vacation. Summer is about discovery. The new summer camp program has exploded with participants because of Kimberly Milovac’s ability to sense a child’s discovery threshold. Kimberly, our steal from Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, has kids camp doing things we’ve never seen at the Resort & Club before and it’s translating to excited kids and happy parents. Similarly, junior golf camp has enough players that we’ll be pursuing a junior interclub league next summer. Golf, tennis, cooking camps, surfing and family events have made this summer one of unintended experiential learning; who said Boca is quiet in the summer? Discover how to scuba dive; the new program offered in the Tower Pool. Rediscover friends on Friday nights in the Palm Court with live music and a new menu of cocktails and small plate foods; it’s all here. While we encourage your family to discover summer, we’re always trying to discover ways to better communicate with you and discover ways to add value to your membership. If you haven’t filled out the survey, look inside this issue for the URL to take the survey on-line. With an exciting 2016 fast approaching, help keep us focused on what you want from the Resort & Club. Make the most of your summer.

Healthy Meals Cooking Class

Oxygen is to the human body what gasoline is to a carburetor engine. That's why oxygen consumption studies are a valuable tool for screening By Robert D. Willix, Jr. MD cardiovascular health. EL Enlightened Living Medicine Medicine performs an oxygen consumption test using a bicycle ergometer, which is the safest test. While not a substitute for cardiovascular stress testing, it does help us determine how physiologically healthy a patient is.

The amount of oxygen brought into the body per minute is a dynamic measurement of the amount of blood the heart puts out. For every liter of oxygen consumed, the heart puts out approximately 5 to 6 liters of blood. If the VO2 in liters per minute is less than 2 in a man and less than 1.5 in a woman, there is a concern. Low cardiac output represents the potential for not only deconditioning, but for cardiovascular disease. Dividing that number by the body weight, a VO2 of less than 25 ml/kg per minute could represent deconditioning. Often, however, it is an early warning sign for heart disease. Looking at the oxygen pulse (oxygen amount consumed in liters per minute divided by the heart rate), a number of less than 8 in a woman and less than 10 in a man is a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease – provided the patient isn't on a beta blocker or some other medication. The higher the oxygen consumption, the wider the heart rate variability – the space between a resting heart rate and maximum achievable heart rate – the healthier you are. Keep on training!

B a k e r Sp o n d e r G a l l e r y Baker Sponder Gallery recently added to its collection of important outdoor works for acquisition. Running Horse by Wendy Klemperer can be found on the croquet greensward at the Main Resort; it is a stunning example of the artist’s lifelong fascination with animals.

Running Steel

When she began making sculpture as an adult, Klemperer developed this passion into three dimensions. Her creation process begins at the scrap yard as she searches for pieces that have been discarded and ravaged by life. Her materials retain a raw, immediate quality through a network of steel lines. Bent and twisted, such pieces contain energy and a potential new life; industrial refuse transformed to living form. Presence and absence reverberate as surrounding environments penetrate the negative spaces between each line of metal allowing the landscape itself to become imbedded in the work. For more information, please visit the Baker Sponder Gallery in the Cloister Lobby or contact them at 447-0321 or info@bakerspondergallery.com.
