Dear Premier Club Member, The holidays are a great example as to why the Resort & Club has gained the reputation as a place to create memories and lasting experiences. Thanksgiving weekend hosts the magnificent buffet in the ballroom and the tree lighting ceremony in the Cloister Courtyard. The beach bonfire on Thanksgiving night has grown in numbers with more and more families returning year after year. But a few weeks later the traditions continue with the menorah lighting ceremony, the holiday boat parade and then the New Year is rung in with Rock the Block.

Even with 40 years of separation, I distinctly recall similar events at my family’s club in Westchester, New York. Maybe not as refined or on such a grand scale, but what made them so memorable was as much about who was there as it was about the event itself. I grew up with a group of kids and in those days every event was at the Club and every celebration was at the Club. We were close and, in some cases, still connect (thanks Facebook). I look back and remember the who as much as the what or the where.

In a short three years, I’ve etched the many faces that attended the tree lighting and the menorah lighting ceremonies into my memory. I think of the kids’ faces as the holiday parade passes; I think of how special it was to have Melissa Etheridge sing last year and I smile when I remember the giggles that came from the kids as Rabbi New struggled on the ladder to light the menorah’s candles.

Every event is planned so that you can make an entry into your memory ledger. It’s only fitting that Waldorf Astoria’s tag line is “The Stories Begin Here.” Maybe their marketing people used the Premier Club as the starting point.
