Dear Premier Club Members, THIS HURRICANE SEASON HAS AFFECTED MANY OF OUR MEMBERS, as well as their families and friends. We extend our most heartfelt sympathy to those who have suffered any heartache, loss, or damage – whether here in Florida or in Texas, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands. The storms, along with the tragic earthquakes in Mexico and fires in California, have served to put things in perspective for many of us. Here at the Club, we were fortunate not to feel the maximum strength of Hurricane Irma. We appreciate the patience you all showed in the weeks that followed the storm. Please join us in thanking our grounds crew and facilities team, who worked tirelessly to restore the Club in a remarkably short period of time. Heartfelt thanks are also always in order when it comes to those who have bravely served our country. On Veterans Day this year, the resort management team is inviting all Member veterans and their families to a commemorative gathering in the front courtyard, where we can thank them for their extraordinary sacrifice. We’ll have a photographer present, and will ask our Member veterans to assemble for a few photos with their brothers-in-arms. November is a month to both give thanks for the contributions of our citizens and to spend time with loved ones. Personally, I’d like to thank all who contributed to a hugely successful Boca’s Ballroom Battle this summer. Your generosity enabled us to make a record-setting contribution to the George Snow Scholarship Fund. I’m also grateful to be serving as co-chair of this year’s Wee Dream Big Ball, which raises funds for the Florence Fuller Child Development Centers, an organization that supports disadvantaged children. Opportunities to contribute to the welfare of our community are very gratifying, and I thank these worthy causes for giving me a way to help. Being with family and friends during the holidays is what makes this time of year special, as it reminds us of what’s truly meaningful in life. No matter what or whom you are celebrating, we welcome you and your loved ones with open arms. We hope you’ll find many ways to enjoy the Club as we move into the holiday season. We’ve certainly got a lot to be thankful for, and a lot to look forward to! I wish all of you all the best as we enter the joyous holiday season.

THE AS NOVEMBER ARRIVES, we all begin to conjure up thoughts of festive tables with family and friends. If you are a wine lover like myself that picture will include an array of wine bottles. If I close my eyes, I can clearly see my table adorned with beautiful bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau (which will be released on November 16) and a sampling of the big, bold, spicy zinfandels that come from Central California.
Of course, the holiday season is littered with festive meals to be enjoyed, friends to be toasted and parties to attend. That means, before we’ve finished ringing in the New Year, you’re probably going to need to select a variety of wines – both for entertaining and gift giving.
What is being served for dinner? Throw the old rules out the window! Whites are not just for fish and reds are not just for meats. If you are unsure of the menu, a pinot noir (those from Oregon are my favorites) is a versatile varietal that will pair well with whatever is on the table. If something spicy is on the menu, try a Riesling from Washington State or Germany; it’s a wine that will balance well with zesty flavors, including those featured in many ethnic dishes. How much wine will I need? If it’s your turn to play host, figure on a little more than half a bottle per guest. Start the night off with a nicer wine that your guests can enjoy while the appetizers are being passed around. If you’re worried about running out, have some table wine in reserve – especially if you expect to have some folks at your table who aren’t usually wine drinkers. They’re likely to sip politely on whatever is poured. When you’re heading out to a dinner party, you won’t want to arrive empty handed. If you’re bringing wine as a gift, one bottle should be fine – unless your sweetheart isn’t the only one who will be with you when you knock on the door. The rule of thumb is one bottle for every two adults. What kind of quality should I be looking for? There are two things you should take into account when trying to decide how nice the wine you’re buying should be. First, consider your audience – what kind of wine do your guests or the person the gift is intended for usually drink? You may not always know the answer but you do know what kind of wine you buy for your own enjoyment. When in doubt, take it up a step from what you drink at home. For example, if you favor a specific vineyard, you could see if they offer a reserve. And speaking of prices… There’s no need to break the bank – even if you’re out to impress. When it comes to wine, price does not necessarily equate with quality. You can find a surprising array of great wines in the $20 to $40 price range – if you know where to look. I find that knowing where the wine comes from is key. A wine’s Appellation of Origin will tell you where the grapes were grown; think of it as a geographic pedigree. Appellations can be defined by the name of the county or state where the vineyard can be found or by federally-recognized growing regions called American Viticultural Areas. When it comes to value buys, some of my favorite AVAs are Washington State (cabernet or Riesling), Paso Robles (red blends or cabernet) and Santa Barbara (Rhone varietals, such as grenache, syrah and mourvèdre). If you or the person you’re buying for favor Napa Valley wines, value buys are becoming harder and harder to find. My favorite, Sequoia Grove, is always a winner and drinks like a bottle of wine costing twice the price. Here’s to a happy holiday season! Eric Hammer Director of Beverage

DESPITE GROWING UP IN SOUTH FLORIDA, Jon Secada had never experienced a hurricane – until this year. “Somehow over the last 25 years, I’ve never been here,” the international recording artist told Boca Club Life. “I was always traveling.” Hurricane Irma isn’t the only thing that will make this year memorable for Secada. “This year for me is a very reflective year,” the Grammy Award-winner says. “It’s been 25 years since my very first CD came out.” In those 25 years, Secada has covered a lot of musical ground. His journey will be reflected when he takes the stage at the Resort & Club on Sunday, November 11. The show, he says, will be an overview of his career – from his songwriting successes to his career as a solo artist and on to his Broadway roles. “It has a little bit of everything.”

In addition to hits like “JUST ANOTHER DAY” and “ANGEL,” Secada will also include material from his newest project – a tribute to Cuban musical pioneer Beny Moré. “It’s a big bad record,” Secada says. “Musically, it has the substance and flavor of a very old-school type of record. I’m excited about it.” And he’s not the only one – the CD, To Beny Moré With Love, recently earned a Latin Grammy nomination. “I’m excited to do the show and share the last 25 years of my career with everybody. It’ll be a lot of fun,” he says. “I still have the same passion and the same desire to do what I’ve always done. I started off as – and I still am – a working musician, a blue-collar guy who just got lucky in music.”

NESTOR TORRES WILL BE APPEARING WITH SECADA – and not for the first time. The two South Florida standouts have performed together on a number of occasions. “The last time we did was in Mizner Park 13 years ago,” Torres told BCL. Hailed by SoundsofTimelessJazz.com as “one of the icons within Latin Jazz and one of the most influential musicians within Latin music,” the jazz flautist has made numerous solo appearances in Boca Raton since then. “Boca audiences have always been so warm and so receptive,” he says.
The Grammy-nominated artist recently released his 15th CD – JAZZ FLUTE TRADITIONS. The eleven-song offering pays homage to legendary pioneers like Herbie Mann and Eric Dolphy, as well as Torres’ idol and mentor, Hubert Laws. “It’s a very different direction,” Torres admits. “My music is mostly original. Occasionally, I have done some themed CDs, but they have been toward the Latin jazz or smooth jazz genre. This is straight-ahead jazz, back to the roots, paying homage to those jazz flutists who came before us.”

Here is a list of checkpoints to help you to accomplish this.
THE PROPER GRIP: Placing your hands properly onto the grip of the club helps produce a square club face and a straighter ball flight. This may not always be comfortable, but don’t confuse comfort with correct. It is also extremely important that you hold the club properly in your fingers rather than in your palm as this will allow you to hold the club rather than needing to squeeze the club to keep it from slipping. When you hold the club properly your fingers, your hands and arms can stay more relaxed and this is helpful to higher club head speed. GOOD GOLF POSTURE AND FORWARD BALL POSITION FOR THE DRIVER: When you get into good golf posture, where you are bent forward from your hips so that your hands can hang directly below your shoulders, you will be in a balanced, athletic posture that will help you to be more efficient. This is also a position that will allow your arms return naturally to their hanging positions following the swing. It is also especially important with the driver that your ball position be more toward your forward foot to increase your shoulder tilt so that your back shoulder is lower and your forward shoulder is higher. This will help you to sweep the ball more on the upswing and we have learned that this can greatly increase distance.
SWING WITH SPEED: Once you are set up well and have a proper grip, go ahead and swing your club with speed. There is an old golf joke that is half true, “Swing in case you hit it.” If you are in good balanced posture and your hands and arms are relaxed you should be able to hear a swoosh on your practice swing which represents pure club-head speed and distance. As you gain confidence add speed and swoosh. FINISH IN BALANCE: Practice holding your finish until your golf ball lands out of the air and onto the ground. By being in balance when you start, during and after your golf swing you are more likely to achieve consistent, center-faced contact.

Congratulations to Resort & Club Executive Chef Andrew Roenbeck, one of the finalists in the third annual Taste of Waldorf Astoria competition. The competition commemorates Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts as the birthplace of iconic (and absolutely delicious!) culinary inventions such as The Waldorf Salad, Eggs Benedict, and Red Velvet Cake. The search for the next iconic culinary masterpiece featured hand-selected James Beard Foundation (JBF) Rising Star Semi-Finalist chefs, each of whom collaborated with select Waldorf Astoria destination. This year's program featured a specific challenge – to transform happy hour into the "Fifth Hour." To expand bar offerings beyond traditional drinks and appetizers, each chef pair was challenged to create two small bites that pair perfectly with an original cocktail and mocktail. Chef Andy, has been integral to the success of the Resort & Club for 25 years, was partnered with JBF Rising Star Semi-Finalist Chef Sara Hauman, who was the head chef of Huxley, a small San Francisco restaurant that garnered multiple awards.

Their Taste of Waldorf entry featured Kobe Beef Carpaccio paired with specialty cocktail featuring Rum Zacapa, Six Grapes Reserve Porto, a honey ginger and lemongrass syrup, orange liqueur and Jasmine green tea. Their Angry American Lobster appetizer was paired with a mocktail of loose-leaf jasmine green tea & blood orange sour and spicy ginger, lemongrass and honey syrup. The winning dish, Beet-Cured Steelhead Trout paired with Rye & Shine Prosecco cocktail and Spicy Togarashi Prawn paired with Ginger Yuzu Asian Pear Mo(ck)jito came from Waldorf Astoria Park City. This winning team is comprised of Waldorf Astoria Executive Chef Michael Zachman and JBF Rising Star Finalist Chef Alex Bois, the owner and head baker at the new Lost Bread Co. in Philadelphia. The panel of judges included the fabulous Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Erik Bruner-Yang, owner and chef of Maketto in D.C. who won last year’s competition, Marc Ehrler, Taste of Waldorf Astoria Chef and Vice President of Culinary Americas for Hilton, and Adam Rapoport, Editor in Chief of Bon Appétit Magazine. 48
