Dear Premier Club Members, THIS MONTH WE WELCOME SPRING, which is a great time to be a Premier Club Member! March and April are always two of the year’s busiest and most exciting months, and 2019 promises to exceed expectations. We’ve curated an impressive lineup of events and experiences featuring top-notch talent in all venues and for all interests. By popular demand, we’re featuring not one, but two Dockside Live waterfront concerts in March. The first is a New Orleans style Mardi Gras celebration, and the second will feature the soulful sounds of Slam Allen who is sure to deliver a powerful performance. Also in March, we are thrilled to welcome Artist-in-Residence and celebrity chef, Jimmy Bannos. He is visiting from his renowned, Chicago-based restaurant, Heaven on Seven where he is celebrated for his innovative take on Cajun and Creole cuisine. We look forward to his collaboration with our resident chefs as part of our Corks & Conversations series. During spring break we will feature expert fitness and wellness Artists in Residence including Paddle Diva, Orangetheory Fitness and more. Stay tuned for future announcements on the full lineup. Looking ahead to April, a number of activities will revolve around the Spring holidays of Passover and Easter including our annual record-breaking Easter Egg Hunt, which features over 20,000 eggs. With Passover beginning on April 19, and Easter Sunday on April 21, the Resort & Club will definitely be in high gear! Be sure to check out the dining options and make your reservations early. Q: Can you tell us about Morimoto’s event space for private parties? A: We are especially excited to introduce Morimoto as a private event option for our Members as this is an all-new offering. We have created the Bamboo Lounge, a space just outside the restaurant and adjacent to Palm Court. Aptly named, the Bamboo Lounge is a semi-private space sectioned off by towering Bamboo plants – it is perfect for either an intimate group of 10 or even a larger party of 20. Q: What is on the menu in the Bamboo Lounge? A: We are, of course, offering Morimoto’s signature menu items. The party menus begin with appetizers served familystyle, which is a nice way for every guest to sample a little of everything. We continue with a choice of soup or salad and offer a wide range of entrée offerings. The menu is unique and fresh and caters to seafood and sushi lovers along with those who can’t resist Morimoto’s chicken teriyaki. Some menu favorites include the Lobster Roll, Morimoto Sashimi and Spicy Tuna and Shrimp Tempura Maki.

MANY OF US PLAN OUR VACATIONS FOR MONTHS IN HOPES OF A LITTLE RELAXATION. Yet, everyday rest and recovery are the least planned and

underutilized ways to enhance performance and quality of life. Let’s understand how sleep and recovery are important to our overall health.

Rest and Recovery Rest is simply a combination of sleep and time spent not active. How you sleep and spend this time is very critical. Recovery, however, refers to techniques and actions taken to maximize your body’s repair. These include hydration, nutrition, posture, heat, ice, stretching and foam rolling. Muscles recover the quickest because they receive direct blood flow. Tendons, ligaments, and bones receive indirect blood flow and therefore can take longer to recover and are more susceptible to injury. Think of all the people we know, or maybe even ourselves, who have torn tendons and ligaments, i.e., rotator cuff in the shoulder and meniscus in the knee.

Sympathetic vs. Parasympathetic Sympathetic activities— often referred to as “fight or flight”—and parasympathetic activities— often referred to as “rest and digest”—are the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system. Depression, craving carbohydrates, a reduced metabolism, poor blood sugar management and difficulty sleeping are just a few consequences when sympathetic activities dominate our lives. Relaxing and energizing activities are parasympathetic in nature. Aromatherapy, meditation, Pilates, yoga, and tai chi help to lower stress, improve oxygenation, and stimulate recovery. They’ve been around for thousands of years because they work. Spa treatments, baths, and sauna time can facilitate lymph circulation and recovery.

Work It Out, Then Rest Exercise will only create results if we recover and rest enough between workouts. When someone doesn’t recover adequately, performance and health suffer. If we looked at their insides, we might see high levels of inflammation and/or their connective tissues aren’t healing. We might see that their happy neurotransmitters are going down and their catabolic hormones, such as cortisol, are going up. You often hear the term “overtraining,” but in reality what could very well be happening is “under-recovering.” Signs you are under-recovering could include: your muscles are always sore, you feel more depressed and anxious overall, you aren’t sleeping well—or can’t stop sleeping, you have no appetite or an insatiable appetite, everything hurts (all the time), and you seemingly catch every virus going around.

Sleep Matters Studies also suggest that people who sleep fewer than 6 hours per night gain almost twice as much weight over a 6-year period as people who sleep 7 to 8 hours per night. “People just don’t realize how important sleep is, and what the health consequences are of not getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis . . . Sleep is just as important for overall health as diet and exercise.”—Carl Hunt, MD, director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research at the NIH.
