Dear Premier Club Members, WE’RE MAKING OUR ANNUAL TRANSITION INTO FALL, which is always an exciting time of the year at the Club. Before we say goodbye to another fabulous summer, we’re celebrating with the second annual Labor Day weekend event “The New Sounds of Nashville.” As I highlighted in last month’s BCL letter, this blockbuster event will give Members a behind-thescenes peek into the creation of top Grammy-winning songs. It’s a must-attend series featuring pop-up bars, culinary experiences, late night-jams and a grand finale End of Summer Celebration and Concert on the Croquet Lawn. The Resort & Club’s upcoming season promises to be our best yet, as we bring back our most popular programs and debut new ones to cater to our diverse Membership. We’ll welcome new Artists in Residence; reprise our Corks & Conversations series, with celebrity chefs, master mixologists, and world-class vintners; keep our Members fit with KarmaVibes Yoga, Paddle Diva, Orangetheory, and Gravity + Oxygen; and continue our beloved holiday traditions and other favorite seasonal events. Fashion enthusiasts can look forward to unique pop-up trunk shows, and as always we’ll be hosting top-of-the-line entertainers across a range of musical genres. I hope you all are as excited as I am to kick off a new season! In the meantime, all my best wishes for the remaining days of Summer 2019.

THE KAPOK TREE Here at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, a majestic Kapok tree stands sentry on the southeast corner of the croquet court. Planted in 1929 as a young adult tree in front of what was then known as Addison Mizner’s Cloister Inn, the awesome beauty of the grand tree connects us to our past. The Ceiba pentrandra tree, known in English speaking countries as Kapok, can grow up to 150 feet in its native habitat of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. The deciduous, tropical tree produces a woody seed pod filled with a cotton-like fluff that was once used as pillow and life preserver stuffing. Today, the nearly 100-year-old Kapok tree continues to reach new heights while remaining firmly rooted in the rich traditions that make the Club so special.

3 lbs. Key West pink shrimp 71/90 count 4 oz. egg whites 4 Tablespoons red pepper, diced small 4 Tablespoons scallions, chopped 1 ½ Tablespoons Old Bay Seasoning 2 lemons, zested and juiced Divide shrimp into 1 and 2 pounds. Mix egg whites in mixer until form a stiff peak. Chop 1 pound of shrimp and fold into egg whites. Coarsely chop 2 pounds of shrimp and fold into egg white mixture. Gently fold in other ingredients. Portion out at 6 ounces per burger and let set in fridge for one hour. Add oil to a hot sauté pan and sear shrimp burgers 3 to 4 minutes until done.

LYNN CHADWICK Lynn Chadwick was part of a generation of British sculptors who surprised audiences at the 1952 Venice Biennale by breaking with the tradition of carving sculpture from wood or stone. Instead, he welded iron and bronze rods into expressionistic, figurative works inspired by the human form and animals that nonetheless hovered close to abstraction. In his New York Times obituary, Ken Johnson noted, “In the 1950's Chadwick developed a spiky vocabulary of skeletal lines and rough planes organized into generalized images of people or animals…" He rejected what he saw as the amorphousness of stone, preferring to work with iron because it allowed him to “do a three dimensional drawing … which has a very definite shape.” In that sense, his work shared something with architecture, the field he originally pursued in his early career.
