Dear Premier Club Members, I HOPE ALL OF YOU HAD A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING WEEKEND WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. Thanks to those of you who chose to celebrate at the Club by participating in this year’s Grand Buffet, Beach Bonfire, Tree Lighting, and/or our first annual FlowRider FunFest! It’s not too soon to look ahead to 2018. We promise a new year full of exciting entertainment, tantalizing new dining experiences, and an inspiring group of fitness trainers to help you get started on the right track. Our new Premier Club website and app will make it easier for you to stay on top of everything that’s going on. We decided it would be best to launch the website and the app simultaneously, which meant we needed a bit more time to complete development – but we’re confident that we’ll be unveiling both by January. When we do launch, each member with an email on file will receive a link to access the site (PremierClub.bocaresort.com) and create a password. The new site and app will be packed with tools and resources to personalize your Club experience and make it easier to learn about, keep track of, and book activities. You’ll be able to use the site and app to: • Create a personal profile for each member on your account. • Opt in to receive customized email messages, texts, and push notifications for any of your interests. • Connect with other Members who share the same interests – e.g. find a date for the next Lobsterbash, or a play date for one of your children. • View the full program calendar and filter it by interest category. • Create a personalized calendar showing your selected activities. • Easily register for or book any upcoming activity, dinner, court time, or tee time. We’re going to roll out even more site and app features over the course of the Spring season, and will keep you apprised as we do. More immediately, we are all eagerly anticipating the winter holidays. I’ll name a few of the month’s highlights, but there are holiday celebrations and parties for every age and interest, so be sure to review all your options. We light our Menorah on December 12, the first night of Hanukkah, and our Tower Pool Party on the 16th offers amazing, up-close views of the annual Boat Parade. And the 5th annual Rock the Block will cap off 2017 in style! This year’s entertainment lineup is better than ever – we’ll be joined by Wang Chung, A Flock of Seagulls, and Salt-N-Pepa. As always, there are many other activities on the calendar – everything from basketball clinics to world-class bocce parties to morning yoga – so try to squeeze in some non-holiday related enjoyment too! The Dominus estate team shares a vision of producing distinctive wines that express the essence of the historic Napanook vineyard, including Dominus, known for its complexity and balance, and Napanook, a blend of Bordeaux varietals specifically selected from the estate vineyard for their lively fruit and bold character. Carpe Diem launched its Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with the 2005 vintage, vinified under the strict supervision of Christian Moueix’s winemaking team in Yountville, California. Carpe Diem Cabernet is made in a classic winemaking style and embodies the essence of a Napa Valley classic Cabernet Sauvignon. THE WAGNER FAMILY OF WINES Thursday, December 28 Caymus Vineyards, which is known for its production of Cabernet Sauvignon, could perhaps be considered the flagship of a collection of wineries owned and operated by the Wagner family. DO YOU KNOW HOW bourbon whiskey got its name? I didn’t either – until I recently had the pleasure of finding myself on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®. It turns out that Kentucky bourbon has quite a history. It began in the 1700s, when getting crops to market over narrow trails and steep mountains was a daunting task. Certain savvy farmers and frontiersmen discovered an easier way to transport their corn and other grains – they converted them into whiskey. That whiskey was shipped in oak barrels stamped from Bourbon County (yes, that’s where the name comes from!) down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. The long trip aged the whiskey, with the oak wood giving it the distinct mellow flavor and amber color.

So, aside from picking up some interesting tidbits of history and sampling some of the finest whiskeys distilled in the area today, what was I doing in Kentucky? I was there on a special mission, a mission to create a signature bourbon for the Resort & Club. For a bourbon to carry our label, it would have to be warm and approachable. It would have to be made to the most exacting standards by the most skilled distillers. Where else would I go but the birthplace of bourbon to meet those lofty benchmarks? Now by law, bourbon must be made in the U.S.; it must be 51% corn and it must be aged in new charred American oak. Working with the expert distillers at Maker’s Mark, I first selected the cask strength (alcohol by volume) and then focused on developing a unique mixture of seasoned wood for the oak barrel that would give our bourbon its distinguishing flavor. Five months later, we received our first bottles of the Resort & Club’s Signature Private Label Maker’s Mark Bourbon and I am proud to say it is the best bourbon I have ever had the pleasure of sampling. I hope you will agree! Try it straight up, on the rocks or in a cocktail – like the Resort & Club’s signature Old Fashioned – at Ocean Bar, Bar Luna, Monkey Bar or 501 East. Thirty cases of our Signature Private Label Bourbon were made from our 2017 Barrel. We will be offering a select number of bottles for retail sale for those who would like to take savor our signature flavor at home. Prohibition 101 On January 16, 1919, Congress passed the

18th Amendment to the United States Constitution, outlawing alcohol. Proponents of Prohibition had argued that banning alcohol would put an end to drunkenness, crime, mental illness and poverty. It didn’t work out quite that way… During the 13 years that Prohibition was in effect, the country’s thirst for alcohol actually increased. Organized crime stepped up to meet the demand, replacing what had been perfectly good and perfectly legal methods of production and distribution. Respect for the law declined while drunkenness, crime and resentment towards the federal government steadily rose. Even the original supporters of the ban on alcohol were ready to throw in the towel by 1933, when the 21st Amendment was ratified on December 5.

WHY WAIT FOR THE NEW YEAR TO UP YOUR GAME? Today’s a great day to start a fat-burning, fat-banishing plan. And you’ll find the following tips will be more help in getting it done than a long list of resolutions! First, here’s a quick lesson on Leptin— Important research has been done recently on a hormone called leptin that plays an important role in healthy eating. Leptin is the stuff that signals the brain when you’re full. When your leptin levels are low, on the other hand, your brain thinks it’s time to eat. Your feelings of hunger will be hard to ignore, so be prepared with healthy options. CLEAR THE DECKS The first place where you need to target fat is in the kitchen. Do yourself a favor – get rid of the junk stashed away in the cupboards, frig and freezer. If the chocolate, ice cream and chips aren’t there, they can’t tempt you when your leptin levels drop. No willpower needed. MIX IT UP Don’t worry about the debate that pits the benefits of steady-state cardio training against interval training when it comes to fat loss. Both methods have their advantages. If you incorporate both in fitness routine, you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds. But don’t rest on your laurels. Both your weight-training cardio work should be progressively challenging. MIX IT UP SOME MORE Your strength-training routine can also benefit from a little variety. There are definitely benefits to doing a full-body workout. But there are also a lot of good reasons to follow a split system. If you make sure to do one full-body workout, one upper-body workout and one lower-body workout each week, you’ll be in good shape (get it??!). TO CARB OR NOT TO CARB? It’s been drilled into our heads – if you’re trying to shed fat, carbs are the enemy! Alas, it’s not that simple (it rarely is, right?). Low-carb dieting can produce great results… for a certain time. You see, when you cut back on the carbs, leptin levels drop. Stay on the low-carb plan too long and your body will react to the constantly low levels of leptin by slowing down your metabolism and turning up the volume on your hunger. This does not mean you should load up. Just make sure to include some healthy carbs in your diet periodically. HIT THE HAY If you haven’t gotten the message yet, we’ll repeat it: Sleep is important to your health, your brain function and just about everything else. If that’s not enough to convince you to hit the hay at a reasonable hour, think about this – very few healthy food choices are made after midnight. ANDREW WARD, PGA, RECENTLY JOINED THE RESORT & CLUB AS OUR ASSISTANT HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL. Andrew brings a great deal of experience to his new role. Andrew graduated from the Professional Golf Management Program at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and quickly began working as the PGA assistant golf professional at Firestone Country Club in Akron, in his native Ohio. He also spent time in the Carolinas working as the tournament official for the PGA Section of the Carolinas. Before making the move to Boca Raton with his rescue dog, Shadow, he spent four years as the head golf professional at Kapolei Golf Club, a public/resort golf course on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii. “Hawaii was great, but it’s really nice to be back on the mainland and to be closer to my family. Besides,” he says, “I still have the beach, I have a beautiful golf course and there’s a great group of Club Members here that I’m getting to know – what more could I want?”
