Dear Premier Club Members, Let’s get connected! The Premier Club website (premierclub.bocaresort.com) is officially up and running. Please make the site your #1 resource for all that is happening at the Club – use it to find out about events, make reservations, and much more. Once you have created a unique username and password for the site, you can also download our app, which is basically a user-friendly mobile version of the website. By using the site and app regularly, you’ll avoid accidentally overlooking events that interest you. As we all know, music makes the world go ‘round! Robert Vazquez and I are both passionate about music, so we’re constantly brainstorming new ideas for performers and shows. As this month’s BCL cover reveals, we’ve got a truly legendary lineup coming your way. Our three Dockside Live! concert series, all featuring the best of the 90s, kicks off on February 2 with The Verve Pipe; singer-songwriter Paula Cole will perform in March, and Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket appears in April. Our One Nite Stand series, the product of a wonderful partnership with Jazziz magazine, will feature Grammy winner Bob James in February, and Ambrosia will be in the house in April. As if the amazing music lineup weren’t sufficient, Members also have opportunities to wine and dine every month as part of our Corks & Conversations winemaker and chef series. On February 21, Napa Valley’s Nickel & Nickel Winery owner Larry Maguire will be in residence, and in March we’ll welcome winemaker Diane Flamand from Château Lafite Rothschild for a very special Champagne dinner. Members can also explore fine wines together every Thursday evening in the Tasting Room at the Monkey Bar. The new year is still young, and we are just starting on projects to enhance and strengthen the legacy of this great Club. Plans to renovate the golf course at the Boca Country Club are well underway, as are plans for other improvements across the property. We’ll share more about all of this in future communications. In the meantime, please enjoy our fantastic program lineup and the great Florida spring weather, and let’s all look forward to the upcoming holidays!

FEBRUARY 2 kicks off the lakeside concerts with The Verve Pipe. Originally formed out of Lansing Michigan, the band’s 1996 album featured two hits: “Villains” and “The Freshman,” which reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. MARCH 23 features Grammy-winning singersongwriter Paula Cole. Paula released the album This Fire in 1996 and produced two smash hits: Billboard Hot 100 at #8 with “Where Have all the Cowboys Gone” and #11 on the charts with “I Don’t Want to Wait” - which was widely recognized as the theme song to the TV show Dawson’s Creek. In 1997 Paula was nominated for three Grammys, including Best Producer (one of only 3 females ever nominated). Paula Cole won Best New Artist that year.

With a commitment to sophisticated production and arrangements, Bob James is known as one of the progenitors of smooth jazz. Discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, James followed with 58 albums and innumerable awards through the five decades. His music continues to evolve at every turn as he has worked and collaborated with many jazz greats over the years, to include Grover Washington, Jr., David Sanborn, Lee Ritenour and Earl Klugh. His own gold seller album, Touchdown, included “Angela” the instrumental theme from the sitcom Taxi, and is possibly one of James’ best-known works. James is also a founding member of the Grammy-nominated supergroup, Fourplay, which has enjoyed consistent artistic and commercial success throughout the years. Bob James’ special guest performer is accomplished classical and jazz flutist, Nancy Stagnitta. He recorded a new album with Stignatta that was released in 2017. THE SUPER BOWL FIVE

For many friends, getting together for the Super Bowl is an exciting time. For one group of friends, attending the game has become a tradition. A fifty-year tradition, that is! Premier Member Harvey Rothenberg and four of his friends - known as the “Super Bowl Five” - have attended every single Super Bowl game that has been played! In 1967, the group of friends decided to fly from New York to Los Angeles to watch the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Tickets were only $10 and the stadium was only half full. Sylvan Schefler, Lew Rappaport, Al Schragis, Larry McDonald and Harvey Rothenberg watched the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10. The friends had enough fun at what is now known as Super Bowl I that they decided to go to the next year’s game. And they haven’t stopped attending since. As the men get ready for Super Bowl 51 this year, they will have attended every one of the major games since the Super Bowl began. We’re devoted to each other, and we’re devoted to the Super Bowl,” Rothenberg says. The men range in age from their late 70s to early 80s. The group has one rule for their annual trip: No wives with them at the game. They also have their own “Super Bowl Five” jackets and rings, as well as a racehorse they named “Super Bowl Five.” Through it all, the group of friends has created an amazing tradition – one they don’t plan on breaking any time soon.

AT THE BOCA BEACH CLUB JOE MUNIZ works as Director of Beach Operations at the Boca Beach Club. An alumnus of Webber International University, Joe played four years of college basketball and he says that is where he developed his team player attitude. Working as beach manager at the Resort of Singer Island over a decade ago, Joe fell in love with the hospitality industry. Through hard work and dedication to each guest, he eventually became director of culture & leadership for Boucher Brothers until he took over beach operations at the Boca Beach Club in February 2017. Joe’s hobbies include watching sports (GO Boston Celtics, Red Sox and Bruins!), going out to dinner, watching a movie with his loving wife as well as binge watching Netflix from time to time. “I am very excited to be working with the leadership team at the Boca Beach Club and look forward to making a positive impact on each member and guest who comes to enjoy a day at Sea Level. “ LORI MUELLER has joined the team as F&B Beach Manager of the Boca Beach Club. She was born and raised in Pittsburgh and greets every guest from the area with a “How yinz doin!” Lori Mueller is no stranger to hospitality, having spent decades working at South Beach iconic hotels such as the W, Delano and the Fontainebleau where she served her guests happiness and smiles every day. Because of her dedication and commitment, she was promoted to assistant beach manager at the Boca Beach Club in March 2017 and within six months took over the reins as the F&B beach manager. Her goal in this new position is to make the Boca Beach Club the #1 Waldorf Astoria in the world “by providing an experience of a lifetime to every club member and every guest!” In her spare time she enjoys anything health and fitness related, looking after her rambunctious Weimaraner dog and taking care of her two energetic daughters.

In the first visit of the study, couples were asked if they met the American Heart Association’s exercise recommendations of 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous intensity exercise. Forty-five percent of the husbands and 33% of the wives reported exercising at this level. On the second visit, the question was repeated. Researchers discovered that when wives met exercise goals first, husbands were 70% more likely to step up their game. It worked the other way around too, but not as well: only 40% of wives were likely to meet exercise goals after their husbands did. These results mirror those from a recent study that followed more than 3,700 couples who were married or living together over a 13 year span. All participants in that University College London study were over age 50. Researchers found almost 70% of couples who exercised together were still doing so two years later, while only a quarter of couples who exercised separately were still working out. CELEBRATING BOAZ VAADIA (1951-2017)

SPONDER GALLERY will present an exhibition of sculpture by the late Boaz Vaadia from January 11 - April 29, 2018 at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach. A selection of small works are also on view in the gallery's Boca Resort location. Israeli-born Boaz Vaadia is best known for figurative sculptures made by carving and stacking stones found in the area surrounding his New York studio. Vaadia said, “I work with nature as an equal partner…That’s still the strongest thing I deal with today, that primal connection of man to earth. It’s in the materials I use, the environments I make and the way I work.” In 1975, Vaadia relocated to New York where he studied at the Pratt Institute. He began collecting materials such as slate, shingles, bluestone, and boulders after he discovered an ongoing construction project near his studio in SoHo. As workers ripped up the bluestone sidewalk, Vaadia carried the discarded material to his loft, where he worked with a hammer and chisel to further expose the sedimentary layers of the rocks. Inspired by the stratified layers, he began creating sculptures that echoed the natural composition of his materials. Primarily named after biblical figures, his public works can be found outdoors in parks and in front of public buildings, as well as in the collections of institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco MoMA, the Bass Museum of Art, and the Tel Aviv Museum.
