The History of Father’s Day in the United States Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers in society. There are two accounts of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated in the U.S. According to one account, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. While another account has the first Father’s Day celebrated in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Although it was recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday in 1924, no official action was taken. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a Father’s Day proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus “[singling] out just one of our two parents.” In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in the U.S.

SMOKED SALMON DIP RECIPE FROM CHEF JAMES PRUITT Ingredients 1 lb. raw salmon 3/4 lb. smoked salmon, chopped 1/2 cup white onion, chopped 3 bay leaves 1/2 cup vermouth 5 cups water 1 1/2 tablespoons butter 1 shallot 1/2 cup minced chives 1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) 1/4 cup sour cream 2 lemons, zested and juiced 1 Tablespoon fresh horseradish 1 Tablespoon chervil leaves Salt and pepper to taste 1 Everything bagel* 18

Directions 1.Season raw salmon with salt and pepper. Marinade 30 minutes in the vermouth. 2.In a pot, bring water, onion and bay leaves to a boil. Add marinated raw salmon and vermouth. Cook approximately eight minutes until fully cooked. Remove salmon and let cool on a plate. 3.Finely chop shallots and sauté with butter until tender. Place shallots in fridge to cool. 4.When all ingredients are cool, mix poached salmon, chopped smoked salmon, shallots, chives, sour cream, lemon zest and juice in a bowl until combined. Let set for one hour. 5.Transfer to serving bowl, grate fresh horseradish over the top with a micro plane grater and garnish with chervil leaves. Place bagel chips around the side and serve. *Slice bagel 1/4 inch thick and bake in 350-degree oven for six minutes until golden brown.

AS WE CELEBRATE FATHER’S DAY IN JUNE, let’s address men’s health and in particular how it relates to fitness. As men age, muscle loss is inevitable. A very important way to slow the aging process is to adopt a regular weight training program. After age 30, men begin to lose as much as 3% to 5% of their muscle mass per decade, and most will lose about 30% over their lifetime. With weight training, you have the power to change this outcome. “Weight training is the best way to increase muscle mass lost due to aging and keep the muscle you have, and it’s never too late to begin,” say Vijay Daryanani, a personal trainer with Harvardaffiliated Spaulding Outpatient Center.

Benefits of increasing muscle Weaker muscle means a decrease in stamina, balance, and mobility, all of which can increase your risk of falls and fractures. A 2015 report from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research found that people with sarcopenia (loss of muscle tissue as a natural part of the aging process) had 2.3 times the risk of having a low-trauma fracture from a fall. “Added muscle from weight training also helps with everyday movements you take for granted, like reaching a high shelf or rising from a chair,” says Daryanani.

Weight training offers other health benefits: •Protection against osteoporosis. A study in the March 2017 issue of Bone found long-term weight training can increase bone density in men. After a year, the researchers found that the men doing weight training had higher levels of IGF-1, a hormone associated with bone growth, compared with the men doing jumps. •Improved cognitive function. A study in the July 2017 issue of European Geriatric Medicine showed an association between increased upper-body and lower-body muscle strength and a greater ability to receive, store, and process information among older adults with an average age of 66. •Lowered risk of diabetes. A 2012 Harvard study of 32,000 men found that doing just 60 minutes of weight training per week could lower a man’s risk for type 2 diabetes by 12% compared with doing none. Increase your weekly time to between 60 and 150 minutes, and you could lower your risk by 25%. Researchers found that weight training helps control weight and reduce glucose levels.

WEIGHT TRAINING TIPS

Weight training commonly uses free weights and weight machines to work specific muscle groups. There is no advantage to using one type of equipment over another, says Daryanani. “Free weights require more control during an exercise’s range of motion and make muscles work longer, but machines have a more controlled range of motion and offer greater safety.” Depending on the type of exercise and which muscles you are working, you can switch between free weights and weight machines. Always check with your doctor before you begin any type of exercise program and follow these tips to begin your weight training program: •INVEST IN A PERSONAL TRAINER. A licensed and credentialed trainer can tailor a personalized plan to ensure you do the exercises you need for an all-around workout. A trainer also can teach you proper form and technique to help you work muscles without wasted effort and reduce risk of injury. •FIND THE RIGHT REP/WEIGHT BALANCE. It’s important to find the right balance between adequate weight and number of repetitions during your workouts to find that balance between reps and point of fatigue. Begin with two sets of each exercise and add a third as you improve. •AVOID OVERDOING IT. A basic beginning weight training program consists of three workouts a week with a rest day between workouts. Each session should last 30 to 60 minutes. Utilize one of Boca Resort & Club’s Elite Personal Trainers to aid you in a successful weight training program and fitness journey.
