Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market Opens Saturday, May 14!

Come and experience Saturday life in a Michigan small town! You are heartily welcome and warmly invited to join us in opening the Farmington Farmers Market in downtown Farmington on Sat, May 14th. We open for the season at 9 a.m.

Opening Day has become a tradition of celebration. A color guard will march into the market square followed by the Farmington High School drum line. A local girl will come forward to sing our National Anthem. The mayor will say a few words, then we will ring the market bell to let everyone know that the Greater Farmington Community market is open.

Let the season of the sun begin!

Live music will follow with The Normandies. This year’s theme is, “Swing into Spring!” Nobody does that better than Alexander Steward and Swing Farmington. This colorful cast of local swing and social dancers will inspire you to “rock step-triple step” the Lindy Hop, or if you’d like to learn, take a free dance lesson! Swing Farmington will be jumpin’ and jiving from 10:30 a.m. until we close at 2:00 p.m.

alone will drive you crazy! Not to be outdone, just down the way will be Good Times Kettle Corn, popping a frenzy of sweet crunchy melt-in-your-mouth freshly popped old-fashioned kettle corn. Now that’s a mouthful!

But the real delight and good feeling comes from seeing our Michigan farmers and local artisans return to market for another season, our 23rd in Farmington.

Find bedding plants, baskets, porch pots, garden herbs and maybe, just maybe, the first pick of Michigan asparagus, rhubarb and early greens! Our artisans will wedge in-between and around the farmers with honey, fresh bread and baguettes, artisan cheese and yes, cheesecake! Local flair means handcrafted soaps, candles, natural teas, garden works and more!

This is your invitation to experience the moment, to rejoice in feeling good in a great space that will find your spirit wanting to return. We are kindred spirits here, as this is your community market.

Feel welcome and look for the green topped “Friends of the Market Tent” and discover all that’s “Happenin’ at the Market.”

Chef Zach has been opening the market for the last few years, and each year brings a new taste-sensation to sample. Meditate On It

By Eve Wilson Here is a minor shift in focus that can make a big shift in your life. You can think, worry, fret and procrastinate about choices, big and small; but for less stress and greater success -- meditate on it!

This type of meditation doesn’t have to be deep, and doesn’t take training or even practice to use. What it takes is a choice to pause before you act, and to seek perspective and wisdom from a clearer place.

Most of us tend to direct our lives from our minds and our emotions. Choices can often be knee jerk, split second reactions; or alternately we go around and around in our minds, digging a circular trench of thought and worry. Such responses are often based on what has happened in the past. Attitudes may swing between “this is how I always do it” and “I never want to do that again!” Basing our choices on the past, limits the opportunities we will experience in our future. It is time to develop a new habit of thinking outside the box of our past, because the times are changing. Something

new is being born in our world and we can be a part of that very positive shift right now! Yes, we have lots to learn from the past. Because of what we have been through, we may now be stronger, more loving or more discerning. But every circumstance is different, and so what has gone before doesn’t necessarily apply to our future choices. It helps to take a fresh look at what is happening now, and how we want to respond to it; and to do so from a more intuitive place.

Within our hearts and souls we have a connection to a higher intelligence. In order to benefit from that wisdom we need to pay attention to it; rather than only listening to mind and emotions. So the next time you have a choice to make, take the time to access the higher intelligence available to you. It doesn’t matter if the choice is small or large, the more you practice the easier it will become.

The key is to pause before responding. Step back from the situation if possible, relax your mind, open your heart and surrender into the unconditionally loving core of your true self within. From that calm center, invite love and higher intelligence to be present in and around the situation.

Ask that things work out for the greatest good for you and everyone else involved. Ask that you be given inspiration about the most positive response or action to take. Then wait and see what comes to you; give it a few minutes or as many days or weeks as needed for you or the situation to shift into a better place. Perhaps you may not even have to respond; sometimes just making the connection to the higher intelligence allows things to resolve.

Sometimes what you need may simply arrive at your door, unexpectedly. Or you may feel a clear, open-hearted response that emerges from inside you, which guides your actions. This response could be so appropriate that it surprises you, because you wouldn’t have thought of it before! It could be something that perfectly diffuses a problem, or helps things to resolve in unexpectedly positive ways.

Neither the rational mind, nor our emotional selves can see clearly enough to guide us beyond the experiences of the past. But these parts of us can commune with our true selves, and be guided by that greater intelligence.

Each of us is an individual facet of the Oneness of all life, the spiritual source which we sometimes call God, or the Great Spirit. We live within these bodies and souls, and our minds and emotions are tools through which our eternal spirit functions in the world. We have a habit of identifying with our minds and our feelings, forgetting that we are so much more than that. Meditating on your choices and responses to life is a way of remembering who you are and co-creating with God - a truly life changing and world blessing thing to do!

They hope that we come to the understanding that the time they spent with us on earth was rearranged, yes, our choice! You picked your mother; however, you might say, “Well, I didn’t feel loved or receive encouragement.”

The lesson is, that in spite of what you did not receive you are given the opportunity to make something positive out of that.

I believe we pick our family; you might say, “Well, we had issues, so why did I pick them?” You chose them in order to be given a chance to make a different outcome of a difficult situation; a chance to do it right. The most valuable lesson is forgiveness and love, when you feel you were not given the right tools to rise above the circumstances.

If you can’t ‘right the wrong’ with that person directly, you can, “Pay it forward.”

If you were hungry, you feed a family; unjustly punished, help find justice for a victim; if abused, help fight abuse. If your parent was addicted, help an addict; if you were adopted, help a single mother.

We gain entrance to a higher level by helping others over the hurdles we experienced in our life.

Your own personal experience can give you passion to move mountains. That is what is recognized in the spirit world; give where you feel life has been unjust to you. If you had the perfect childhood, God bless you, that’s not your karma, you can still go out and make a difference on this earth.

Energize with B-12!

By Dr. Karl We all want to be all that we can be.

Within our minds and hearts, we see ourselves doing the amazing things we know we’re capable of. But to our dismay, many of us run out of energy before accomplishing our goals. Did we become distracted, confused about our direction, or just plain exhausted?

Energy is the ability to go and do what must be done. Most mothers care for their children no matter how tired they are – making us wonder how they keep going and doing the impossible. This is one of the reasons we celebrate and honor our mothers each year on Mother’s Day. Our basic energy level is inherited maternally through unique cells called mitochondria. In addition to these genetic influences, our energy depends upon having healthy mitochondria.

We need an ample array of all the B vitamins (B-complex) in order to keep our mitochondria healthy. Magnesium is required for the final release of energy from the packets produced by the mitochondria.

Unless symptoms of deficiency are experienced, you may be deficient in B-12 without realizing it. It is common for older adults to be deficient in B-12 due to problems with absorption and the fact that B-12 requires certain enzymes to be synthesized. B-12 may be injected, taken sublingually (under the tongue) or obtained through special whole food supplements.

Natural dietary sources of B-12 include meat (especially liver), eggs, and dairy products. Given these natural sources, it’s easy to see why vegetarians often have inadequate B-12 levels. Absorption requires a healthy digestive system to release intrinsic factor so that it can be absorbed. (See my previous article on Digestion in the Body Mind Spirit Guide magazine or at www.karlwellnesscenter. com) Other people have B-12

deficiencies due to what are called, Genetic SNiPs, which affect an average of 46.9% of people in the USA (Journal of Epidemiology, 2009.)

and not absorbing B-12. Secondly, if you are taking folic acid (homocysteine problems) without B-12, it’s likely that this ratio is out of balance.

The group of B-12 vitamins are known as cobalamins. As a cofactor for many reactions in the body, vitamin B-12 helps support the blood, the digestive system, vision, and the nervous system.

Some of the most common symptoms of B12 deficiency include: Dizziness, Chronic infections, GERD, Sore Tongue, Premature Grey Hair, Addictions, Orthostatic hypotension, Hypertension, and Shortness of Breath.

Although I’m focusing on B-12, all B vitamins are important. If you increase certain B vitamins but not all of them, your body thinks you have a deficiency in the ones that you did not add. Similar to taking vitamins that are not based on whole foods or scientifically produced according to strict standards, imbalances and other deficiencies in the body are eventually created as the body tries to deal with what’s missing.

When taking B vitamins, it’s important to get plenty of good absorbable calcium.

Your body requires an adequate supply of calcium in order to utilize them. If you don’t have the required calcium, your body takes it first from your jaw bones which may leave you with loose teeth.

That’s a scary thought!

If you are taking our Vitamin D regimen and eating plenty of dark green, leafy vegetables and /or raw dairy with the enzymes intact, you should be okay, as one of the beneficial effects of obtaining vitamin D is calcium absorption. (Shame on you if you’re not taking a high quality vitamin D supplement. Knowing the importance of vitamin D on overall health, please take me seriously and get your levels checked!) I also recommend a Calcium lactate supplement as vitamin D, calcium, and essential fatty acids work synergistically.

If you’re wondering if you have a B-12 deficiency, I’ve provided a list of potential problems. Although the liver can store three or more years of B-12, this just means that your body is allowing you time to fix the problem, not ignore it. If you have gastrointestinal problems, you are probably not producing intrinsic factor

Causes of B-12 deficiency include: Alcohol, H. Pylori, Leaky Gut, GERD, SIBO, Eating Disorders, IBS-IBD, Advanced Chronological Age, GI Cancer, GI Irradiation, Pancreatic Cancer, Liver Disease, Tropical Sprue, MEHFR and GST SNiPs, among others.

Drugs such as antacids, aspirin, steroids, anti-hypertensives, oral contraceptives, antibiotics, metformin, statins, proton pump inhibitors (Nexium, etc.), and H2-blockers (Zantac, etc.) among others, may cause B-12 deficiency.

Increased demand for B-12 can be caused by athletic endeavors, pregnancy, cancers, multiple myeloma, and surgery. (Since anesthesia can be dangerous with B-12 deficiencies, some anesthesiologists give B-12 preoperatively.)

There are four variations of vitamin B-12 typically used in supplements: Cyanocobalamin is the most common and least expensive form. Until recently, most supplements contained B-12 in this form. However, this form must be used in higher quantities and converted in the liver to a useable form. In the process, it releases cyanide into the body, another obvious downside.

Methylcobalamin is a form of B-12 that protects the nervous system by promoting nerve cell regeneration.

However, people who get jittery from caffeine may not do well with this form.

Adenosylcobalamin (dibencozide) is a highly-active form of B-12 that is essential for energy metabolism. It is

required for myelin sheath formation and RNA/DNA synthesis associated with maintenance of nerve and spinal cord health.

Hydroxocobalamin is another active form of B-12 which is mainly produced by bacteria and can be converted in the body to usable coenzyme forms of B-12. This unique form assists in detoxification and is a scavenger of nitric oxide. As it is more protein-bound, it remains in circulation longer.

When looking at your particular situation, it’s important to determine which form of B-12 may be most ideal for you. Using the newer delivery systems, it’s possible that you could get back up to speed with oral supplementation. If not, you may need to receive the injectable version first. Specific blood tests along with muscle response testing help us make these kinds of decisions.

Want to change your life? Go to a psychic fair!

People stayed for hours to sample different readers. We added an extra hour to the event, just to accommodate all those who had signed up. We saw there was a need, and we decided to continue fulfilling that need.

By Amy Garber When a friend invited me to my first psychic fair in the early 1990’s, I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew was that it was held at the Macomb Community College in Warren, a long journey from Ann Arbor.

The Body-Mind-Spirit Festival, which was hosted by phenomeNews magazine, was a wide-ranging extravaganza, with rows and rows of vendors in a huge expo center. It was overwhelming to decide what to look at first! Tarot cards, crystals, Reiki-ed jewelry, Melaleuca products, bodywork tables and so much more! Things I had never seen before beckoned for attention.

One side of the building was devoted to psychic readers, rows and rows of them as well, at little card tables. My friend pointed out one angelic-looking blonde woman dressed in white and told me, “I’ve had readings from her before.

She has a very pure spiritual light. I recommend getting a reading from her!”

So I did.

The reading in itself was a lifechanging event, but there’s more. A few months later, I called the psychic for another reading. While making the appointment, she told me that she was starting to teach psychic development classes and thought she should mention it to me.

I was at a crossroads in my life, and wanted to do something fun and different. I didn’t know whether I had any talent in that area, but this sounded exciting. That reader was Shala Kilmer, and she became my teacher for many wonderful classes over the years.

My studies ultimately led to a new fulltime career, where I now teach intuition development myself, as well as doing

channeled intuitive readings. And all because of that first psychic fair.

This is just one example of how much you can learn from going to a holistic event like this. Yes, we now have the Internet, and there are always books — but usually, you can benefit so much more from learning something first-hand.

There’s no substitute for interaction with a human being.

Until it closed in the early 2000’s, I continued to attend the annual Body Mind Spirit Festival, always seeing something new. One time, I found my friends at a booth with stones and crystals. When the proprietor offered me a small black stone to examine, I instinctively put it on my neck because I was having a lot of pain there. And the pain almost instantly went away!

That was my first experience with programmed crystals, and I became a believer in their power after that. (I still have that stone!)

The Festival also had free presentations on all types of topics that were out of the mainstream. You could learn about channeling, handson healing, and past-life regression, to name a few. These are topics that, even today, you cannot come across easily in daily life or in the news media.

In 2012, I co-founded a group called Intuitives Interactive, for like-minded seekers to meet and explore New Age topics. In 2013, some of the members suggested we host our own psychic fair.

Our first event was held at a tiny location in Ann Arbor that June, with seven readers and three energy workers.

That first fair was a huge success!

Since then, we have hosted holistic psychic fairs twice a year at increasingly larger venues, adding more features as we grew, including vendors and presentations. I have seen people’s lives change as they get a pivotal reading or have some amazing energy work that takes away their pain for good. People meet others of like mind and make lasting connections.

It’s wonderful to be part of these transformative experiences!

The Intuitives Interactive Biannual Holistic & Psychic Expo can now be called the largest event of its kind in the area. At our last Expo, there were approximately 50 vendors and bodyworkers, 30 readers, and eight free presentations.

Journal your answers to these questions and make a list of what changes need to happen to make yourself happy and whole.

You are the one that has all of the power in your life to make change happen for you! What an exciting and empowered soul are you! If you are happy and feel like you are following the yearnings of your soul, great! The more you listen to your inner wisdom of your soul, the more attuned you will be with your soul’s path in this lifetime. If some changes need to be made to align with your soul’s path, start making minor changes daily and before you know it big changes will happen.

Do more of what makes you happy and light-hearted. Ask yourself, If I could do anything, what would it be? Write down your thoughts daily; you really do have infinite possibilities available as options in your life. Let go of fear of mistakes you might make; mistakes teach us and help us expand and grow at a soul level. Be brave and go after what you’re passionate about in your career, causes, friendships and lovers. The time to live is now!

Are You Getting What You Desire?

By Phil Rosenbaum Recently, I was conducting a Quantum Healing Hypnosis Session (QHHT was developed by Dolores Canon). During these sessions, one is able to communicate with what have been called guides, or angels or Masters. I asked these beings if the “Law of Attraction” really works. The answer was, “Of course it works.” The Law of Attraction states that if you ask for something and believe you will receive it, it will be given. If this is true, then why are so many people not getting what they desire?

According to the Law of Attraction, what you get depends on the “vibration” you are putting out. What exactly does that mean? If you desire to get a good parking spot, and you truly believe you will get it, it will happen. So, why doesn’t this work for getting the good job you desire, or attracting the right mate, or becoming prosperous? I believe the “vibration” you send out has to do with what you truly believe. So if you ask to be prosperous, but you don’t really believe you’re deserving, it is not going to happen. Your thoughts are interfering with the desired result.

Many people have what are called, negative “core issues” (deep-seated beliefs), and these prevent the fulfillment of your desires. Let me give you an example. Let’s say when you were growing up, you constantly received a message such as: “You always screw things up.” After hearing this message repeatedly, you start to believe that it is true. Then, if you apply for a good job, you will find a way to sabotage your success. Although you may think you are “asking” for a good job, the actual vibration or message that you are sending out is, “I’m not going to get a good job,” and that is what occurs.

5 Steps to Achieving Authentic Power

By Dave Krajovic Every day our lives are impacted by the forces of the world.

Maybe it is politics, the laws of the land, violence, societal norms, religion, big business, natural forces or whatever; they all impact us in varying ways and degrees. These are powerful forces. While we all are impacted by these forces, we are not impacted in the same way. Some feel out of control, burdened, hopeless, and powerless, while others are invigorated, optimistic, passionate and grateful.

At the same time these forces are at play, there are other forces that shape who we are that we are likely not even aware of. These forces are the energies that we hold within. These energies are the feelings we have suppressed and the thoughts we believe in. These energies decide our experiences and define who we are.

These energies are why two people can share the same outward experience, yet describe the same thing very differently. For example, one might say, “Gee, another grey, cold, snowy, spring day in Michigan,” and feel depressed. The other person might say, “I love these early spring grey snowy days, they help me appreciate warm sunny days even more.”

Understanding that outward experience does not define who we are, is the first step to claiming your power. The second step is to be aware. Be aware of your thoughts and feelings.

Examine your thoughts. Whose thoughts are they? Who put them there? What have I bought into? Feel your feelings.

The third is to know that you are the one in control, that you are the creator. “Wait! I created that? NO way, man!” You say the world is out of control, there are powerful forces at play and I am but a victim. That power is illusory. It is not real power.

Real power is the power to create universes. This is the power that God used to create worlds, the power that you and I can access at any time, all the time.

The fourth step to claiming your power is to go within, which is where you can access the power that creates universes. It resides in you and me. This is the great secret that is being revealed to those who are ready to listen. It is from the silence and stillness within that we can experience incredible bliss and joy, knowing and wonder, wisdom and grace. It is here that we can access the field of infinite possibilities. This is the power that creates universes and it is yours to command.

From the place of stillness, you can access the fifth step to authentic power which is to create a clear and present connection with your higher soul. By aligning with the higher soul, you have surrendered your lower will to your higher will.

You are now one with Universal flow and the creative force of the Universe. This is the energy that creates worlds. It is the energy that allows the sun to rise every morning, the seasons to change, the flowers to open graciously to the sun’s rays and that holds the stars in the night sky. It all happens with ease, grace and beauty. Such will be your life when you align with this flow. When you are aligned, there is clarity in your life and Wisdom now guides you. This will feel good to you for at last, you have come home to your essential nature.

This is simple. You have problems because at a deep unconscious level you are resisting Universal flow; you are resisting who you truly are. No more! Reject the limitations society has placed on you. Reject their false god of power and control and step into alignment with real authentic power. Isn’t it time for you to be you? When you are in alignment with your soul’s purpose, there is no one who is more powerful than you.

instilled fear, greed, jealousy, contempt and so many other unsettling emotions that take control of us. We must, instead, take steps to quiet ourselves and reconnect with the source of all being so that we can find inner peace and remind ourselves that energy never dissipates, and therefore “life”, as we know it, never ceases to exist.

By Susan deCaussin Energy isn’t created and cannot end. It’s in us, around us and a part of everything that IS. The same way a glove on a table becomes animated when placed on our hand, our souls animate our physical bodies when our life is created in birth. Like the small seed that sprouts a blade of grass, the seed of life within us magically carries the instruction booklet necessary to cause every cell to evolve into the amazing piece of machinery that becomes our outer garment while we explore this playground we call earth as a physical being. Learning, loving and growing in spirit, as our adventure in these mortal bodies follows the winding path of what we refer to as “life”.

When our suit of armor, the vessel that carries our soul through this physical experience, has become tattered, torn and is no longer able to repair itself, as is written in that first chapter of the instruction booklet, our essence is released. The energy that IS who we REALLY are returns to a higher state of being – a vibration that exceeds an earthly interpretation, and can only be recognized by those souls who are sensitive to that elevated state of consciousness.

Physical existence, for most, places the soul into a temporary state of slumber. It leads our minds to believe that the only things that are REAL are those that can be measured or detected by our five senses. These sensors provide a comforting boundary for us as we navigate through the challenging scenarios that we, ourselves, purposely wrote into our life story before we even entered our earthbound vessels.

The tremendous noise of this earthly existence has clouded our thoughts, and most have become so engrossed with the experiences of their body’s senses that they’ve become firmly rooted in this physical encounter, like being seated in a

comfortable reclining chair, disinterested in the mere thought of venturing out to see what lies beyond the five senses.

When we lose sight of the flawless soul within us, and close our minds to the possibility of something beyond the physical world, we begin to see life as a continuous struggle. It appears that we are each being punished for some unforgivable deed by an unseen force.

Fear creeps in and slowly becomes the driving force to all of our decisions.

Greed, as a byproduct of that fearful state, is inevitable, as we believe that we have only one shot to achieve all that we feel deserving of, before our time here is over. Organized religion is used as a pacifier to console the fearful thought that this is all there is. We struggle to identify someone, or something, that has power beyond our own, to provide comfort in desperate situations and a safe harbor as our physical body reaches a point of ceasing to heal itself any longer.

Never lose sight of the fact that the five senses are only “available options” on this outer garment we animate during our journey here on earth. We never lose our true essence while we inhabit this training ground we call life.

There are souls among us that have been sent here to assist in rediscovering our connection to each other and the universal life force that goes by so many different names. They are here to remind us, through their teachings, examples and guidance, that the boundaries around us are self-imposed.

Now is the time for mankind to awake from the state of slumber that has

This is an exciting time to be on this plane. The teachings of many enlightened ones are available for all to reawaken their souls and heal this planet. God Is Not Religious

to the higher self and the God consciousness.

It is so hard to keep faith in God’s love with so many painful and difficult experiences happening in this world. We must stay focused and continue evolving our soul through the darkness of negative thought and into the light of knowledge and love. That is why many people have to reincarnate many times, until they get over their fears.

By Wendy Powers Nugent Realizing that this subject may offend some people, please let’s explore this topic in greater depth for clarity and understanding.

Mankind seems to need to put a face on God -- no matter the religion or belief system. We seem to need to humanize everything around us, yet putting a face on God is impossible as he does not have one. Now please do not misunderstand me, I believe strongly that people need to have strong faith and a connection to God, regardless of their religion or faith; however, God is not siding with or sanctioning any one religion over another. Yet wars and great divides continue over whose religion is the right one sanctioned by God. This is how it has gone since the beginning of recorded history.

People are willing to kill and die for their concept of God, defending the idea as to how we are to respect, love and fear him. Which brings me to another thought: is God a “him” at all?

I have heard some spiritual groups use the term, “Mother” or “Father God.” This is a bit difficult for our human mind to grasp as to whom or what God may be. The best description of God that I have heard to date is this: the supernatural, omnipotent being. Some of the other names used to describe him are: The Creator, Adonai, YHVH, Elohim, Yahweh, Jehovah, Abba/ Father, Lord, I AM, and of course, God. Truly, there are thousands of ways to describe or name our Creator, but none of them can speak to his intent as to whom or what is the right way to address him. For God is not a man, even though he created us in his own image; so now, what does that mean? Because he is not of human form, we are left with the fact that we have an energy that makes up our soul.

We can see it, this energy is known as the Aura which not only surrounds humans, but also every living thing on Earth. So God created all that lives, in his own image!

Part of our being on Earth and going through the lessons of living is to remember who we truly are. We are all the sons and daughters of Abba, God our Creator. Sometimes I feel like we live in a bad middle school full of bullies, as we are trying to just get through to the next level, hopefully not getting beaten up or even drop out (die before our time). When we allow negative, angry or hateful thoughts take us over, we lose the connection

Remember, when Jesus came into this world he had the ability to remember who he was. He knew he was God’s perfect son; however, we are all God’s children. Jesus was brought into this world without a veil between him and the father (Abba). It is the difference of being in this world with blinders on vs. having perfect 20/20 vision -- with x-ray vision to boot!

When Jesus came into this life, he knew he would be limited in his teachings if he joined a religious group or became a Rabbi.

Religion or faith of any denomination has rules and limitations in its doctrine. Jesus wanted to help people connect to their higher self and to God; when we understand this we will truly learn what Jesus came to teach us.

You have total power to communicate with the universal mind -- the all-knowing pure love and omnipotent energy we call, God. You are part of this energy as much as each drop of water in the ocean is connected, yet individual within the whole.

You do not need a religious order to achieve this connection.

Personally, I love being involved with Church because it is a beautiful place (with some exceptions) to reinforce faith and to seek answers that others may have already learned. What is “Authentic” Yoga?

By Leah Slagenwhite As the ancient practice of yoga evolves and we continue to become enlightened, awake, and energetically intelligent, applying the ancient principles to our modern lives, we can be just as susceptible to the subtle sneak of judgmental thinking as those who choose to stay asleep.

The reaction when a traditionally-trained yogi views a clip of Buti Yoga™ is often to question the authenticity of this Westernized physically-based version of yoga (…can’t tell you how many times we’ve heard, ‘No, that’s NOT REAL yoga!’)

No doubt that the “traditional yoga,” as described from Patanjali and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika was very few postures, mostly meditation, and almost nothing like the “traditionallybased” variants of yoga we see in studios today. Originally, (and hopefully, still) yoga was a tool to help develop control over the physical body so that we could more elegantly control the breath, and then, the mind, ultimately, resulting in the shedding of the veil to facilitate a pure ‘union’ of mind, body, and heart (a.k.a., samadhi, enlightenment, shakti awakening).

As one of our beloved yoga teachers wrote, “Yoga is, by nature, a forest, not a stagnant anchor locked in history. As a forest, it is organic, it grows, changes, and moves through time.

With our modern-day McYoga chains, and the athletic nature of yoga in studios across America, where does a practice like Buti fall? It’s a new baby in the forest! Lots of competition! At one point traditional yogic sadhus in India may have looked at a contemporary vinyasa flow class and said, “Whatever. That’s not real yoga.”

But now Buti has growing roots in the yoga forest, and it’s most definitely leading many from other fitness backgrounds who typically may not have an interest in traditional yoga, to deepen their yoga practices. Isn’t this what we want? To spread the love through yoga?

Quoting the same yoga teacher above, “The judgment against Buti Yoga makes me think of growing up going to church and having folks get all twisted because we wanted to start clapping during the hymns, saying, ‘but that’s not real worship!’” Drop the judgment. Really drop it. And try a live class.

“Real” is an experience of genuine connection, to mind, to body, to breath, to each other.

The Silver Thread: The 3 Perfections

By Dr. Abramsky Last month I discussed the four afflictive emotions – fear, anger, sadness and grasping - which poison the mind, and are the source of our unhappiness. Buddhism teaches practices to reduce or eliminate such feelings, which are seen as the source of our suffering. Buddhism also uses practices to cultivate positive, grow producing feelings as a type of counter to affliction. We can call these, “the three perfections.” They are: Love: The Greeks identified three forms of love. Eros: Eros means desire and longing, Eros is the Greek God of love. Eros is sexual and selfish. It is built upon the desire for physical pleasure. It is possessive, and uses another for one’s pleasure.

Philos: Philos is the love expressed for friends or companions. It is the love fostered by shared experiences.

While such love is more shared than Eros, it is fickle. Most of our shared experiences are transient and as they change, philos changes with it. As adults, our closest associates are rarely those we had as children. As we progress through the stages of life, our reference groups change, and Philos is fluid, changing with our social movement.

Agape: Agape is modeled on the love God had for his only son, Jesus Christ. And in fact, Jesus then turned this love toward his followers and all mankind. It is the ideal love we should foster for all our fellow beings. This is the highest form of love, as it is essentially selfless. In Agape, we put the other before our self. In our daily life Agape is the idealized relationship toward our children and in our “permanent” intimate adult relationships, such as a marriage.

Compassion: In late childhood children’s brains mature, and they develop the capacity for empathy. Empathy is the ability to feel what another feels. Compassion is the capacity to feel the suffering of others. In Buddhism suffering is an existential state.

Regardless of status, money, beauty, or fame, all people suffer.

All people experience pain in relationships, disappointments in achievements, physical decay and psychological failure. We can view such failures through the lens of judgment, or through compassion.

Certainly, judgment for one’s acts is necessary. People must be held responsible, controlled and sometimes punished for their actions. But we must never loose track of the suffering, the psychological suffering that is that actor’s constant companion.

The Dalai Lama provided a good illustration of this action/ judgment position.

The Dalai Lama was asked if he hated the Chinese, who invaded and destroyed his country. The Dalai Lama said that it was easy to hate the Chinese for what they did, but he believes in compassion for all, so he regards the Chinese as a challenge. Can he urge the Chinese to vacate Tibet, while still feeling compassion for them as people?

If fact, we are constantly challenged to maintain a soft and understanding attitude toward those who do things which displease us. But doing so is one of the foundations of happiness.

Gratitude: Gratitude is to be grateful for whatever we have.

Objectively, our life offers us both good and bad. Obviously we must accept both. But we can choose to focus most on those things for which we should be grateful.

The fundamental gratitude is simply our joy for the gift of life.

With the joy of life as a background, even negative events can be a source of happiness. When we cast our experiences as a learning opportunity, even the negative experiences are seen as a privilege to feel and experience the vagaries of life.

Day to day gratitude is a choice. But we miss those opportunities daily. Do we allow ourselves to savor the act of someone opening the door for us? Do we experience joy when we wake up feeling healthy? Are we happy when we encounter an old friend? Gratitude is that choice to focus on the benefits, small and large, of our present experience. While we must experience and acknowledge suffering, our joy in life depends on our decision to be grateful for that which is before us.

Practicing the three perfections counters the natural suffering of life, and evolves toward the spiritual goal of acceptance and contentment.

Putting a Spring In Your Step

Flowers are blooming and the air is warming. Just as we clean our homes in the spring, we need to cleanse our body.

All native cultures around the world have spring rituals involving body cleansing to eliminate toxins that have been stored during the winter.

The liver is responsible for detoxifying all the chemicals that we are exposed to through our diet, water, personal care products and the environment. Our amazing liver also performs 500 functions.

The liver stores toxins in body fat if it cannot neutralize and eliminate them. This creates unwanted body fat that is difficult to get rid of. The liver is an efficient fat burning organ, but when it is overloaded with toxins, it cannot burn fat, resulting in unwanted weight gain.

An overload of chemical toxins damages the digestive system.

The toxins leak from the damaged gut into the body, where the liver has to remove them. The liver becomes overloaded attempting to detoxify all the toxins. Then the toxins are returned to the gut, further altering the pH and causing more gut damage.

Leaky gut is the result of toxic overload. Some common leaky gut symptoms are indigestion, spring allergies or sinus congestion, poor absorption, fatigue, food allergies, and autoimmune reactions. Leaky gut needs to be repaired with the correct nutrition before successful liver detoxification can occur.

The key to reducing toxic load is to help the liver. The liver is located under the rib cage on the front right side of the body.

It needs assistance if you experience right upper back pain, right shoulder pain, right-sided headaches, and indigestion or discomfort over the liver. Having a functioning nervous system and the specific nutrients your body needs to handle toxins is also vital for optimal liver function.

The nutrients and fiber from fruits, vegetables, and particularly organic sprouts of cruciferous vegetables aid in the liver detox process. Beets, onions, garlic, asparagus, broccoli, and radishes are just a few of the foods that assist the liver.

Other ways to help the liver include using herbs: red clover, yellow dock, dandelion root and milk thistle.

Overall, the simplest action to take is to increase your consumption of clean electrically charged, super hydrating water. Water that hydrates the body can more easily flush out stored toxins, resulting in easier weight loss and better health.

If we want something with all our heart, why don’t we get it?

For example, I want a relationship with a funny, well-endowed (financially people; get your minds out of the gutter!), spiritual man. So, why am I not attracting him into my life? The more I research, I am figuring out that there is an obstacle that is keeping my desires from me. I am working out, asterminding, and meditating regularly to stay in good physical and emotional shape so that I am appealing to the eyes and soul. I am kind and a hard worker, willing to be a team player. And I often crack myself up, so I imagine that others might also think I have a fairly good sense of humor. So why is Mr. Right not knocking at my door?

With further thought, I have come to the conclusion that the obstacle is not something we are or are not DOING. It is something we are BEING. If we are not being love, meaning feeling connected to Spirit, feeling peaceful, trusting and empowered, then we are being in fear of something. Fear works consciously in our lives -- when we are freaked out by a large bug or surprised by a car that suddenly pulls in front of us.

AND being in fear of something can subconsciously be in our thoughts, keeping us from our desires.

Yes, FEAR is the obstacle that we are allowing to block us from our desires! I will use myself again as an example. I am a perfectionist. Perfectionists often have a fear of failure. These subconscious messages, like fear of failure, probably started appearing in our lives before we were seven years old. For me, as a young child, I was expected to behave perfectly -- in public, at school, and when things got rough at home so as not to add more burdens to the grown-ups. If something is not done perfectly it is not good, or it is a failure, is the message I have carried around. I am now learning that because something is not perfect, does not mean it is a failure.

By continuing to live a holistic lifestyle with my children gives me the opportunity to heal myself while being aware not to put my ‘stuff’ on them. My girls are 16, 14 and 12 years old, and are getting to a place where my actions are teaching them, not necessarily my words. They see me meditate, pray, do yoga and eat well, and they participate from time to time in these activities.

Also, they are open to working with holistic practitioners such as body workers, energy healers and therapy.

Each day, my girls are teaching me perseverance, love, patience, playfulness, adventure and how to dream. Our relationships are growing. A big part of that growth is the commitment to live a spiritual fitness lifestyle. Taking care of body, mind and Spirit. Working with the right holistic professionals helps us in that growth process. It’s a little early for them to read the Body Mind Spirit Guide, however, I do see one of them pick it up from time to time off my coffee table.

It’s important for me to remember that I’m a child; to play more, be more adventurous and dream. Dream Big! The dream may change and that’s ok, but dream. The Universe/God has our back. We are his/her children. We are love!

Our world is rapidly changing, so fast, but one constant that remains is that we are all children. In our busy lives if we can be childlike, think like a child, play like a child, what would that look like?

Well, I tried that this past weekend for a little while; I played soccer with two of my daughters at the park with my dog, Buddy. It was Buddy and I versus them. It was a 75 degree day with the sun shining. No cares in the world for 30 minutes for the four of us, just 30 minutes of being present, 30 minutes of inner peace, love, laughing and freedom.

Game ended in a 6-6 tie.

Spring: A Season of Renewal

changing our environment. Here are a few things we can do to awaken our spirituality during the spring season.

1. Cleanse the home-- spring usually marks a time of new beginnings, so as you are participating in your “springcleaning”, get out some sage and cleanse any negative energy that could be in your atmosphere.

Put away your winter gear, as spring is upon us and in full bloom. The season of change is here and with it brings new opportunities. Spring is a season of renewal and rebirth; a time when the grass turns green, buds bloom on the trees, plants spring forth from the soil and the sounds of birds re-enter the air. It is the time when the hard ground softens to allow the rainwater to fill the soil while allowing shoots of new life to emerge.

During this period we open our windows wide to feel the breeze of spring. We let the gentle breeze flow through our laundry. This is a great time to get rid of unwanted accumulation and clean while straightening up piles we have left for later.

All of the things we set forth to do in winter are now in our grasp to cultivate and bring about in spring. Our energy is refreshed and transitioning from a rather dormant winter slumber. The dark days of winter give way to the warmth emitted by the sun. The sunlight received by our body releases serotonin (a hormone allowing us to feel calm and focused).

This ‘mood boost’ helps us gain inner quiet and balance; our personal evolution during this time helps us shed energies that no longer match the frequency of our journey.

The energy we put forth in the universe can only be successful if we go about it with a positive intent. We must push aside ego to allow the universe to let everything fall into place. A clear spiritual vision leads to a stronger connection to your higher self as well as to infinite intelligence. So, how do we prepare ourselves for this evolution during springtime? We start by

3. Get outside-- As stated earlier, sunlight is an extreme energy booster. Springtime offers an additional amount of sunlight, allowing us to soak up precious vitamin D that we do not get in the winter.

With the influxes of energy and your restart, this is the best time to set forth your path to growth for the year. Review your dream chart, the items you wish to achieve within this year and into the future. Set aside time just for you as a period to regenerate yourself each day. Talk to someone you have not seen or touched base with in a while and share the things in life that make living special. Open up to the new beginning for mental, physical and spiritual growth. Spring is here and you are a part of everything beautiful that it brings!

Starting Your Day Mindfully

By Miche Lame’ So, here I am, outside on this beautiful day, writing to you.

One of the ways I take care of myself is to start my day by reading, A Course in Miracles while drinking tea/hot chocolate, meditating, and then doing some light yoga. How do you start your day with something positive for you, something that feeds your soul? I would recommend that you incorporate some kind of deep belly breathing and meditation, even if it is just for three minutes.

Clients are usually somewhat resistant to developing a healthy and comfortable routine that nourishes their soul in the morning.

Are you in a poor habit of waking up at the last minute, then rushing to get to school or work, or taking care of the kids? Do you even take the time to take a full, deep breath? Or, are you on autopilot, mindlessly surviving just to get things done?

There is a whole, wide world of adventure out there, and starting your day with a mindless habit/routine will not build a foundation for emotional, mental, spiritual nor physical health.

Yet, these habits start very young. Chances are, even as a young child, your parents woke up, started rushing around, woke you up, and started rushing you to get to school, possibly even preschool, programming this survival habitual routine into your bio-computer brain. How about changing that?

When you wake up without even taking a breath to center yourself, you might bring in yesterday’s worries, overwhelm and concerns into this day. Which means, your mind is probably racing and never letting the past go; it’s just programming those worries, anxieties and concerns into your present, so how can you be present for your now? The only moment you really have!

The world becomes an illusion, a dream that you seem to sleepwalk in and never wake-up from. And, if you do, you have created the very habit of being worried, overwhelmed and anxious, which is imprinted and programmed into your biocomputer brain, becoming more and more deeply entrenched.

I would recommend that you look at what you are creating, sooner rather than later, as any habit, program or routine takes effort and mindfulness to transform into something you’d rather experience. How about instead, taking that deep breath, connecting with your soul, your highest self breath, and start learning to live connected with the Divine, finding and being joy in everything you do, anywhere you are.

You can mindfully create and transform your life, just by taking care of you! I remember when my child was an infant, and I was frustrated that I couldn’t seem to clean my home to my liking. As I vented with my awesome mother-in-law, she

asked if there was anything more important than what I was doing right then. I was holding my happy, smiling child. I had forgotten to be in the present and enjoy where I was in that moment; even though I had the knowledge, following through and re-programming my script took some deep breaths and effort. Mom woke me up! I am so grateful for her. She really knows how to just be. I then created a new morning routine that I could include my child in. I think we were both happier, and our whole family was calmer, more connected and at peace.

And, this peace can expand in your life; all is only energy, so what you feel is a type of energy that can spread, attracting more peace, calm and serenity in your life. Your very environment will transform, and so will family, friends and work relationships. It really is the gift that keeps giving. Are you ready and willing to accept this gift?

By mindfully developing your own nourishing morning routine, you build a foundation that you can build upon all day, bringing your inner joy, inner peace and calm to everything you do and any situation you find yourself in. Wouldn’t that be wonderful-being present in the moment, connected with your highest self!

By starting your day in a mindful manner, you can transform your life. By living in survival mode, mindlessly trying to get through the day, you can actually be just ‘living in a dream’.

Nothing seems real, or everything is over-dramatized and becomes overwhelming and frustrating, creating the feeling that you are dead inside, fearful, drowning, or just repressing your feelings so that you can continue onward.

Wake up! Create a morning routine that nourishes your soul and allows you to enjoy life, your family and friends, even your work. By creating a mindful, nourishing morning routine, you bring more energy and focus into your life, and you will accomplish more in a peaceful, relaxed and joyful manner.

Wouldn’t that be a nice change of pace?

So, choose to start your morning with love and nourishment as your foundation, and connect with your highest self to guide you through your day. Relaxation, calm and peace will build more and more, deeper and deeper, and your focus and ability to be joyful and accomplish your goals will naturally build as well; you’ll transform your life just by developing a new morning habit, a new routine. Have fun with it; it is your time, your life to enjoy and experience!

When I am doing crystal healing, I will place four pieces of smokey quartz at the four corners of the healing table to pull out all negative energies and emotions stuck in the auras; this combination of the smokey rutilated phantom crystals would also be great for this. To use this crystal in meditation to gain information about a specific dis-ease, sit in a meditative posture while holding the crystal on your third eye chakra. You are not in your body; your body is in you.

A recent study showed that people engage in their workday only 18% of the time. We have forgotten the most fundamental rule of Life: What you give out, you get back. Life/God does not care how long you have disengaged from your life or have believed you are lacking. The moment you decide to love you, and show up more fully, the vibrational escrow waits for you.

Yes, we do live in an immature society that has forgotten our connection to each other, our food supply, our bodies, and nature. Sweet one, do not let society or your wounded family be your excuse to stay small or harden your heart. Yes... you who are reading this... the world NEEDS YOU to shine.

How to shine?

You shine by simply being more fully YOU. And... there are infinite ways to express your shine: smiling to a stranger, writing a poem, forgiving yourself, etc. Some powerful steps to help you yield to the real innate magnificent you and express your shine are: 1. Every morning make the decision to love your humanity (mind, body, emotions) and be as present as possible in each moment.

2. Don’t believe your crazy mind. You are something far greater than your thoughts.

3. Surrender requires the ingredient of focus, to be properly lived in your life. Meaning, have an intentional focus to love, dream big, show up… but let go of how, when, with whom, or where. If you try to “go with the flow” or live in grace without focus, you will just be a jumping bean of reactivity to others’ emotions. Holding an intentionality in your life is like the rudder to a boat: it directs your words, actions, and self-perception in an empowering way. Then through intentional surrender, the waters and winds of Creation can carry you to the highest potentiality for your life. Intentional surrender is a science that can change your life.

4. And now, the most important thing: remember that what you focus on in another, is what you will activate in yourself.

Don’t believe others when they are speaking from their pain.

Choose to see the love and innocence in everyone you meet.

Yet, there is an influx of home gardens and organic living that appears to be accompanied by increased dog ownership. In my perspective, dogs bring us a personal connection back to Mother Earth.

For one thing, our dogs get us out and walking. This allows us to escape the so called, ‘electric world of constant connection’. If we choose to do so, we can leave the phone off and walk in the woods...breathing, scenting the greenery of the natural world. Letting our eyes and mind relax. Our dogs have the power to share this with us. Note the ease of movement in the dog’s body on the grass and the dirt paths of the park. Notice the change in your own stride and gait.

Our chakras are the electric centers of our bodies. They are the spiritual charge that gives us life. All the electricity (Electromagnetic frequencies, EMF’s or flux) that surrounds us, either through power and cable lines or cell towers, can disrupt our chakras causing dis-ease. Green spaces allow us to reconnect with the earth’s natural energies and help us and our dogs heal from the influx of negative energies.

Dogs have six bud chakras besides the eight major and 21 minor chakras. Four of the bud chakras are found on the largest pad on the base of the paw. These paw chakras are constantly and directly in touch with the ground. So, our dogs are in touch with the earth, feeling its vibrations.

They’ve brought us along for the walk! We both return home rejuvenated, refreshed and reconnected, both to each other and Mother Earth. I am grateful for my dog’s presence, keeping me present and grounded in this electric century.

Meals with Mindfulness

By Erin Stohl In the hustle and bustle of daily life, meal times can easily become rushed and stressful.

Whether we are quickly eating our breakfast in the car on the way to work, or eating dinner while talking on the phone and/or watching TV, it’s common to see meals as something to fit into our full schedules, instead of making them a priority.

Although it can be easy to hurry through meals or to eat while multi-tasking, let’s consider the benefits of slowing down and creating mindful mealtimes.

First, slowing down and fully chewing our food supports healthy digestion.

Since saliva contains enzymes that help us to properly break down food, chewing sufficiently is an important first step in the digestive process. Additionally, chewing helps to break food down into smaller particles, which allows nutrients to be extracted during digestion.

Chewing also relaxes the lower stomach muscle, which supports the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine. By bringing awareness to our chewing, we are more likely to slow down and chew our food well enough to support optimal digestion.

Another benefit of creating mindful mealtimes is that it helps to support a balanced nervous system. When we eat while distracted or multi-tasking, our bodies may be in a more tense state.

Eating while tense contributes to the persistent hum of stress in the body and mind that has become commonplace for many of us. However, when we are able to minimize distractions and focus on the food we are taking in, this sends a message to our body that we can relax, which improves digestion and supports peace of mind.

Here are some other quick tips for mindful meals: Pause.

Put down your fork or spoon and pause in between bites. This helps to shift the pattern of taking another bite of food while there is still food in your mouth from the previous bite.

Breathe. Taking a few breaths in between bites helps to increase mindfulness and slow down eating.

Timing. Set a pleasant sounding timer on your phone to go off every few minutes while eating. Each time you hear the sound of the timer, bring your awareness back to your meal.

Reduce. Use a smaller fork or spoon to decrease the amount of food in each bite.

Unplug. Turn off cell phones and other electronics while eating to avoid the distraction of scrolling through Facebook and other social media sites, responding to emails and text messages, and searching the internet.

Plan. Set aside a specific time for meals. This helps to make space for mindful eating instead of needing to squeeze meals in between or during other activities.

out how long it typically takes to finish a meal. Then set a goal to slow down your eating so that your next meal takes a few minutes longer to finish. When you’ve become more accustomed to the new slower mealtime, try to stretch it out by a few more minutes. Keep stretching until mealtime feels spacious and relaxing.

For example, this might look like taking 5 minutes to eat a meal, to then taking 7 minutes, to then taking 10 minutes, etc.

If you decide to experiment with more mindful meals, remember to be patient with yourself. We develop our eating habits as children and it takes time to create new patterns. The great thing about mindful eating is that whenever we slip back into old patterned behaviors, we can bring our attention to the present moment and make a different choice. Specifically, by slowing down chewing, minimizing distractions, and experimenting with other different mindfulness practices during mealtimes, we can support digestive health and overall wellness.
