Our Founding Vision…

“I was standing on the highest mountain of them all, and round about beneath me was the whole hoop of the world. And while I stood there I saw more than I can tell and I understood more than I saw; for I was seeing in a sacred manner the shapes of all things in the spirit, and the shape of all shapes as they must live together like one being. And I saw that the sacred hoop of my people was one of many hoops that made one circle, wide as daylight and as starlight, and in the center grew one mighty flowering tree to shelter all children of one mother and one father. And I saw that it was holy.” Black Elk’s Vision (1862 - 1950)

Labyrinth in Livonia, Open to the Public! The beautiful labyrinth at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, located at 30 Six Mile Rd., Livonia, is open to the public 24 hours, and all are invited to visit and enjoy this resourceful place of quiet healing and peace. Designed and constructed by church volunteers, the labyrinth offers individuals and groups a place for relaxation, prayer, and meditation. A labyrinth is a meandering pathway, generally contained in a circle; the path is followed into the center and retraced to the beginning. During the journey, many find that the chatter in their mind is quieted, giving way for relaxation, insight, prayer, and clarification. Labyrinths are found around the world and have been used by a variety of cultures for hundreds of years. The Holy Cross Lutheran Church labyrinth is located on the east side of the building and has a few benches for sitting. The Silver Thread: The Buddha Nature of Nature By Michael Abramsky

I was born and raised in St. Louis Missouri. It is hot and humid. My allergies were aggravated by the heat and dampness. I was also a lonely, angry and depressed child, which may have tainted my perspective about that city. Through that child’s eyes though it seemed to go from winter to summer, skipping the in-between of rebirth. At age 11 I moved to Michigan. I moved in the fall and endured the winter. Then came my first spring. I knew this was my home. We all experience the beauty of a Michigan Spring. The rich green that washes everything you see. The crispness of the air. Day by day buds appearing, finally flowering in flowing plumage. As an adult, I often walk my dog in the late afternoon. The lower hanging sun softens the day, but the rich subtle shades of green follow me. The chirping birds give their last flight before quieting for the night... Birth and renewal surround us. Spring is my teacher. It feeds my Buddha nature. We are all born Buddha’s. Buddha means “ the awakened one”. Being a Buddha is not an intellectual experience, a bunch of words like those you are reading -cannot bring you to Buddhahood. Only experiences lead us on that path. It is a path each must follow individually and through the creation of transformative experience. Every bodhisattva or aspiring Buddha needs a guru. Michigan spring is mine. Spring is a teacher. In that sense, Spring is found within. The view of a rich and verdant spring landscape touches me only to ephemerally escape, and to be found again. The constant on the outside

is transitory on the inside. The experience of nature is reached through intuition. Intuition is body knowledge, a sensuous understanding by the body-mind. The path we follow is often illuminated by accident. I do not seek enlightenment on those walks but sometimes I trip over it. In the tradition of Zen, you are as likely to be illuminated by accident as by formal practice. I have written before that the mysterious is often the path to enlightenment. We cannot understand nature but the lack of cognitive understanding leads us to the experience of awe. Nature, like a Zen koan, has no answer; looking for meaning only baffles us, but it may open up clarity when I am not even trying. Perhaps my greatest enlightenment came from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It is an arduous climb, not so much because of the topographic difficulties, but because of the altitude. At 14,000 your oxygen is reduced by 50%. After 4 days you reach Cabo Hut. After a rest, you make your ascent at Midflight. .7 hours of climbing straight uphill numbs you. The stress consumes your mind. At dawn, I reached the peak in a partial trance. Suddenly my guide reached down took my hand and pulled me to the plateau. The sun appeared to race across the land, finally illuminating all of Africa light. I broke out crying. There were no thoughts, just naked experience of nature’s miracle. The moment released me from the grip of wishing things were different. It anchored me in the divine presence of now. It set me in the awe and mystery of life. Staying Young at Heart It’s a common expression that has some science behind it, thanks to a study from University College London in England. The researchers set out to learn if people who feel younger than their chronological age actually live longer. They looked at information from 6,500 participants. The info included the participants’ “self-perceived age” -- how old they feel compared to their actual age, which is typically a reflection of health, physical abilities and well-being. At the start of the study, 70 percent of the respondents said they felt at least three years younger than they were. In fact, the average was nine years younger. 25 percent felt their age, while just 5 percent felt older. Eight years later, the researchers looked at the group’s mortality rate and found a greater mortality risk in the people who felt older than their age -- 75 percent of those who felt older than their age were still alive, compared to 82 percent who felt their age, and 86 percent of those who felt younger. It may be more than mind over matter -- feeling younger could lead to better health habits that can make people feel and be healthier. It’s never too soon (or too late!) to adopt a younger mindset. Stay adventurous, try new things, develop new skills, and take up hobbies you’re passionate about. Don’t waste time on the “what if’s” about the future or be stymied by regrets over the past. Staying Young: A Matter of Body, Mind and Spirit By Katrina Mayer

Forget the wrinkle cream. Toss the pills and powders. To regain your youth, or perhaps even turn back the clock, you can have fun – without spending lots of time, energy, or money. Staying young, however, does take an understanding that body, mind, and spirit are interconnected. What good is a “young” 90-year-old body if your mind and spirit have grown old? Or, how would you feel if your mind was sharp, but physically and spiritually you weren’t at your peak? Without the balance of all three, staying young wouldn’t be worthwhile. So how do we do this? How do we stay young in body, mind, and spirit? What steps do we take? Here are some simple, proven guidelines that can be easily incorporated into our busy, everyday lives. When practiced consistently, these steps will bring results almost immediately. Just remember to have fun with them. Staying young shouldn’t be a chore. If you enjoy the process, you are more than halfway there!

Young Body SMILE. Really smile. When you smile, you naturally feel better. There’s nothing more beautiful and young looking than a face with a smile. Let that beauty radiate from you. LAUGH. When is the last time you laughed until your eyes watered and your sides ached? Try watching a funny movie or going to a comedy show. Spend time around someone who makes you laugh. Borrow a joke book from the library. Laughter can make you feel younger and lighter, and a good laugh is definitely contagious. BREATHE. When a baby inhales, its abdomen is pushed all the way out. As adults, we breathe mostly from our chests. If we want to feel younger, we can learn to breathe like babies again. Slowly inhale through your nose and let it fill your entire torso. Let your diaphragm stretch. Hold the breath for just a moment and then slowly release it through your mouth. Since breathing helps get toxins out of your body, a few deep breaths a day can make a huge difference. Try it right before you go to sleep at night and you might even sleep like a baby. EAT FRESH & EAT LESS. Portions seem to get larger and larger every day. A good idea for getting around the jumbosized meals is to eat more fruits and veggies. Try to have a big green salad every day. It’s healthy and filling. Fresh fruits and vegetables are full of vibrant energy – a perfect recipe for staying young. TAKE A WALK. Moving your body is an excellent way to keep fit and limber. Find an exercise buddy. Meet a friend in the park for a brisk walk. Find a way to move your arms and legs. Walking keeps you heading in the direction of a young, healthy body. Young Mind SOCIALIZE. Staying connected with friends and family is a good way to keep your mind active and alive. Communication and interaction with other people can be a wonderful form of mental exercise. Join a club, or start your own book discussion group. Socializing is a lot of fun and helps you stay young. ELIMINATE CLUTTER. Clutter is found in many shapes and sizes. Whatever form it takes, clutter can be a youth stealer. A clear mind and a relatively clean home help to bring about the peace found in a youthful mind. Simplicity is a must for staying young. EDUCATE YOURSELF. Reading, listening to tapes, and

attending workshops are a few ways that we can educate ourselves. Borrow tapes or CD’s from the library and fill your mind with your favorite topic. Learn to speak another language or get a recording of inspirational stories. We’re always young enough to learn something new. PUZZLES. Most daily newspapers have a crossword puzzle and at least one or two word games. These puzzles stimulate different thought processes which keep us on our toes. One puzzle book can provide endless hours of amusement. A young mind is a nimble mind.. THINK YOUNG. Forget about your age. Whether you’ve been on this planet 30 years or 60 is irrelevant to staying young. You can be ageless. Think young thoughts. Staying young starts with the thought that you want to stay young, so generate more young and ageless thoughts every day. If you think you can stay young, then you can stay young. Young Spirit GRATITUDE. Try looking at the world through a vision of gratitude for a moment. What are you thankful for? Who or what is in your life right now that makes you happy? Start a gratitude journal. Living our lives with an attitude of gratitude helps us stay young in spirit. FORGIVENESS. Few things make you feel better than letting go of a grudge. Being mad or upset can give you wrinkles on your face and in your spirit. Let go of an old upset. Set that person free and you set yourself free. MEDITATE. Taking time to relax, breathe, and calm our thoughts is practically a necessity. Five minutes of quiet time is like a mini vacation. Find a few precious minutes to reconnect with yourself and your spirit, and you will feel younger and fresher. CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS. When we were kids and earned a good grade in school, we got a star on top of the page. As adults we rarely allow ourselves to bask in the moment of an achievement. Keep your spirit young and vibrant by giving yourself a gold star. Feel good about something that you achieved. LIVE ON PURPOSE. Find something that you’re good at, something you enjoy, and then do it. Even if it’s a hobby or a weekend venture, that’s okay. You can also volunteer at a local hospital or nursing home. Finding a purpose keeps us youthful in spirit. Visit: www.refresher.com

Remembering to Play By Eve Wilson Play is the way we reclaim our freedom of heart, mind, soul, and spirit. It is like a deep breath after holding it for too long. It is essential and a good investment for every life! In the family I grew up in, an adult woman didn’t play. I was oblivious to this until a friend asked why I didn’t play with my daughter. I am grateful she brought this up! I realized my resistance to playing with her, and though I did in certain ways, there were a lot more ways that she and I could have fun to our mutual joy. How sad that my mother never played with us. I had some healing to do around that. Also, we didn’t play with our dogs! We loved them, cared for them, took them for walks, but the woman didn’t throw balls or wrestle. When I rescued a whippet 20 years ago, I treated him the same as I had been taught. It wasn’t until I got a puppy of

my own that I began to realize how important it is for dogs to play with their people…and in the process, how important it is for me!

home, I am walking off the leash! This is necessary for me because walking a whippet is a bit demanding. Now and then I need to walk at Eve pace, and I allow myself to enjoy that.

I still resist the play impulse in favor of reading a book and vegging after a long day of work. I work 10 hour days and finish late. So when my darling whippet asks me for an after-work romp on the rug, part of me says “not tonight”. But I have come to realize how valuable that romp is for my soul. Whippets are instinctually so quick and sharp that to play ball with one is fabulous fun! Tobias can catch a ball on the fly, or by jumping and turning in the air to grab it! And he is super cute. So I find myself just laughing out all the stress of my day. I don’t get to bed as early, but when I do I am more refreshed.

I love that my husband and I believe in lazy weekends and vacations. We spend as much time as possible doing only what we want during those times. We are blessed to have adjoining townhouses which allow us each the freedom to enjoy our own space. So when we are together it is a treat and we make the most of it!

I have been blessed by marrying into a family with young grandchildren. Since the other grandparents are retired or work part-time, they get the most grandparent time. But I have an invitation to visit when I can in the morning and play with my granddaughter -- just play! That is my job! There is nothing more fun than this for me, not even playing with Tobias. I have actually become the only adult over 30 to be called “my friend” by my granddaughter. I was sad when the day I could visit her was changed to my busiest day of the week. So once again I have to overcome the resistance caused by learning as a child that adult woman don’t play. I have to lecture myself that this special opportunity is time-sensitive! She won’t be free to play with me weekday mornings for very much longer. It is too sweet an opportunity to pass up.

Long ago I made a decision to stay on the planet when my soul contracts said I had planned to leave. In choosing to stay I promised myself to make this a life that I want to live. There was lots of deep learning and healing needed to achieve that goal, and I have succeeded. However, it isn’t something you do just once. Making a life worth living is an investment you make every day. Play helps! Back in the mid-1960s, Fritz Perls, the founder of Gestalt Therapy, was living and working at Esalen Institute, located in Big Sur, California. It was one of the largest growth centers for human transformation. Fritz had heard about Ida Rolf’s structural integration work and its benefits and was intrigued about her work and the results she was getting with her clients. He reached out to her and asked her to come to Big Sur to perform structural integration on him. She agreed. After a short period of time, word spread of the results Perls received, and interest grew in Ida’s work. Not only did people request that she work on them, but many people also wanted to get trained as practitioners. This was something new for Ida, for up until this time she had been teaching her work mostly to Chiropractors and Osteopaths, who wanted to take pieces of her system without understanding her vision of a completely structurally integrated individual finally at peace with gravity. As with most new practices, people start to form opinions, and rumors spread that structural integration was only about the body and did not support spirituality in human beings. Finally, after having heard enough of those rumors, Rolf stormed into one of her classes and angrily shouted, “There is a rumor going around Esalen that Ida Rolf doesn’t believe in the soul and the spirit – that’s poppycock! It’s just that right now, the body is the only thing I can get my hands on.” The truth was that Ida was indeed very conversant with spirituality and various metaphysical paths. She was a long-time student of Tantra Yoga and various other spiritual disciplines. She understood there was a connection between her work on her clients and their spiritual journey. As I see it, there are multiple connections between Rolfing and mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of a human being. Especially when people have been traumatized in life, they have a tendency to disassociate from their bodies. From firsthand experience I have had working on my clients, I have come to learn that the more a person has experienced personal trauma, the more they disassociate from living in their physical body. For many people, Rolfing can be a huge entrance way for them to get back into their body, mentally and emotionally. This helps them feel that being in their body is a safe place to hang out. The reason why people leave their body is because of emotional trauma, pain and fragmentation that they have experienced. People do adopt bodily postural patterns based on their unconscious belief systems. If someone feels beaten down by life it is likely that their posture will be collapsed and their “survival

w w w. B o d y M i n d S p i r i t G u i d e . c o m

JUNE 2019

posture” will anchor their beliefs and attitudes. Not only do they have to work on this emotional baggage, but they must work on the body’s physical structure that has adapted to these unconscious belief systems. Someone who has hyperextended knees can be easily pushed over and will probably have difficulty standing in their own authority. Another person might have a tight band of soft tissue (fascia) armor around their heart chakra and physical heart that will limit the level of intimacy they can experience. What Rolfing can do structurally for the body can enhance a person’s spiritual path of their soul evolution. It is important to have a balance between being grounded in the body but not trapped in it. Just as you are grounded to the planet earth, you also need to experience your vertical force or Line, lifting both your body and consciousness toward the heavens. Many spiritual and energy cultivation practices such as tai chi and chi gong, connect-up heaven, and earth through special postures, movement patterns, and breath work. Rolfing has been proven to enhance spiritual practice by creating a grounding effect that brings our spiritual practice back to earth. As Ida Rolf once said, “In the east, they are interested in the “sitting master”. I am looking for the “walking master.” In other words, she was looking for someone whose body could structurally and energetically span heaven and earth while embodying spiritual principles, not just in a cave but in daily life. Youthful Healthy Hints!

* Shoulders rounded and tense? * Are you less flexible than you use to be? * Chronic hip, neck or lower back pain? * Does your body feel beaten down & compressed? Structural Integration (Rolfing") can:

1. Use sunblock -- Use a sunblock with an SPF of at least 30, and wear a hat with a brim that casts a shadow over your face. 2. Exercise -- Moving your body on a regular basis is one of the best hedges against aging and helps ward off many chronic diseases.

* Improve your posture dramatically * Assist in breathing easier and deeper * Improve your game (yoga, golf, etc.) * Make being in your body joyous and uplifting

3. Drink green tea -Recent studies show that polyphenols, a type of micronutrient in green tea, block VEGF, a signaling molecule in the body that triggers plaque build-up in the arteries that can lead to heart attacks, stroke and vascular disease. 4. Get more sleep -- Studies indicate that seven to eight hours of shut-eye is optimal, and it’ll make you look younger, happier and more attractive. Visit: bestlifeonline.com

The Science Behind an Ionic Cleanse: More than Just Happy Feet! By Dr. William H. Karl, D.C. Anyone who’s soaked their feet in warm water after a long day may remember how relaxing it felt. Although an ion footbath is more sophisticated than just soaking in warm water, why not do both? Taking care of ourselves means finding balance in a stressful world. It also means taking steps to reduce the effects of stress on our body. A great number of people succumb to illness before understanding the importance of this; unfortunately, the road to health is much steeper once a disease process starts. One of the most important concepts in a wellness paradigm is that detoxification is essential to health. Evidence shows the link between the accumulation of toxins in the body and the development of chronic diseases, such as cancer. When toxins overwhelm the body’s normal excretion mechanisms, the body produces inflammation in the area of the toxins if it can’t eliminate them. This type of inflammation is the body’s way of saying it’s in trouble. As the body becomes overloaded with toxins, it begins to deposit them into areas where they’ll do the least harm, such as fat cells, cysts, polyps or tumors. Within the body, there’s a system of invisible energy pathways called meridians. The meridians are one of several pathways for toxins to exit the body. Capillaries and lymphatic channels also pick up toxins and carry them to the liver and kidneys to be detoxified and/or excreted. An ion cleansing footbath makes sense (and is effective) because these meridians have beginning and end points on the feet. Here’s the basic science: An electromagnetic ionic field is created in the ion foot bath. Immersing the feet in the electromagnetically charged water enables electrical contact with all the primary meridians. Change charge density and the geometry changes, releasing trapped molecules. Changing the local charge configuration releases material that is ionically bound. The body’s meridians reside in the matrix. The matrix is a web-like fabric surrounding every part of the body. James L. Oschman, Ph.D. defines the matrix as the extracellular, cytoplasmic, and nuclear matrices that form a continuously interconnected fabric that extends throughout the body. In a report on the mechanism of action of the Erchonia EBPRO in regard to physiological detoxification, he states that toxin removal enhances the functioning of virtually all of the physiological systems (October 2004). Detoxification is essential when the matrix becomes compromised by toxic 14

accumulation. The matrix is comprised of a tissue called fascia. The existence of this covering has been known for thousands of years but not until recent times could the exact nature of this complex matrix be explained. Tiny tubes called tubules carry an oxygen-rich fluid to the muscles and tissues in the fascia. (Note: If the fascia receives an injury, this fluid turns into a gel and doesn’t flow until it’s repaired. A chiropractic adjustment can assist with this type of repair.) The fascia acts as a net to capture harmful toxins. It has an overall negative charge whereas most hazards to the body are generally positively charged. The ion footbath alters charges on the fascia matrix to allow the captured toxins to be released. The computerized alteration of the ionic charge from positive to negative may be compared to the energetic equivalent of wringing out a cloth to expel particles caught in the matrix. The body sets its own pace in an ionic cleanse as it mobilizes and eliminates stored toxins and wastes. Detoxification occurs both during and after treatment through the organs of detoxification (i.e. kidneys, liver and skin). Approximately 60% of the toxins are exhaled through the lungs over the next 3 - 5 hours, 30% through the bowel/urine and only about 10% enter the water. There’s been much conjecture in the past by well-meaning but not well-informed individuals saying that the toxins being eliminated can be identified by the colors in the water of the footbath. This is incorrect. When the ion cleanse system is activated, it creates an electrolytic flow. Substances present in the water, such as salt, choline, magnesium, copper, and detergents change the color of the water. Anything present on the skin also influences the color. The internet shows many different types of footbaths with varying prices. In the office, we use a professional unit, the Erchonia EB-PRO, because it has the most advanced technology available although it costs thousands of dollars rather than several hundred. It uses a battery power source for safety reasons which allows it to be FDA approved. Direct current units eliminate the possibility of unwanted power transients or static sounds being passed to the body. Inexpensive units typically plug directly into the wall. The arrays used to create the therapeutic ion field also vary. The EB-PRO uses a copper coil array. Systems that use leaded solder arrays can transfer unwanted substances into the body. The array conducts direct current into the water and generates an ionic field which then transfers into the body. The bubbles from the array indicate that the ionic field is being created as the hydrogen and oxygen particles separate. A small amount of

salt is used as a catalyst to enhance this reaction. Warm water allows the feet to sweat, opens the pores, and allows a greater absorption rate through the skin. Spaces within the skin have also been found to support the flow of materials released from the matrix. The references in regard to the mechanisms of the ion footbath are based on the Erchonia EB-PRO. Erchonia refers to it as an energy balancing system because it is designed to restore the body’s energy and balance by restoring the body’s proper pH and facilitating the body’s natural detoxification process. This type of ion therapy doesn’t claim to cure or treat any disease or injury. The body’s organs naturally function better after detoxification and the rebalancing the body’s bioenergy fields. Patients often report increased energy, improved mental clarity, more vitality, clearer skin, a stronger immune system, and looking and feeling healthier – as well as happy feet! Dr. William H. Your Soul sets up events specifically for you, to bring you into your greatest power. You are that loved. Growing through the four levels of consciousness is possible if you are willing to look within, be kind to yourself, and ask for help.

Stand in Your Divine Nature By Barbra White

Stand tall in your divine nature. You are a divine being waking up to Itself. Everything happened exactly as it was supposed to. Everything, good or bad, was to show you that you are light and that Who You Are is bigger than any problem.

In #1 consciousness: Life is a constant struggle. In #2 consciousness: Teaches you selflove, and how to take a stand for your worthiness.

The truth is: You are amazing. And that is exactly what scares you. Opening to your divine nature means you must let go of all the stories that you have come to identify yourself as. You are not your failures, reputation, gender, or accomplishments. You are a cosmic happening as a local phenomena. You are love. Hold your energy field with a reverential focus on love. Do not let conditions, people or events define your worth. Your worth is inherent in who you already are. There is nothing you can do to destroy or change your inborn magnificence. It only waits for your permission to be expressed. “The bad” thing happened to help you to stubbornly focus on the truth of your being. Take a stand “for” love and “for” your worth. Stand in the conviction of your greatness, not to be above anyone, but to be a living example of faith, love, and possibility. “If those on the spiritual path’s conviction to love were as strong as a terrorist’s convictions... we would have world peace”

In #4 consciousness: You integrate the protective personality and realize your true divine nature.

Remind that younger hurting part of you that you are growing and becoming a better person after the event. You will stay trapped in pain and addiction if you don’t drop the limiting story. “The mind only races when there is pain underneath to be felt” - Why Self Acceptance Is So Powerful Change the story. Decide today that life has always been for you, and everything happened as it was supposed to. Stop believing life is happening to you, move into seeing life happening through you, and then, as you.

Pain stays locked in your tissues and creates addictions if you stay in the story of life that life happening “to” you. Hold pain like a baby. But, stop telling “the baby” horror stories. Remind “the baby” that you are gaining wisdom, greater love, and new ways to move in the world.

There are four levels of consciousness: Victim: Life happens to me. It is their fault.

Love Barbra White Barbra offers mentoring, teachers training, and retreats. Join one or both of her June events, Cure for depression, ADD and Anxiety? Yes... June 6, 6:30-8: 30 pm and/or Animal and Nature Communication Retreat. June 22, 10am6pm. Call 734-796-6690 to register or visit: www.BarbraWhite.com

Surrender: Life happens through me. I am guided and directed by the voice of the Divine. I live in a self-organizing universe. Being: I am Life. Life happens as me. Everything is Love. I am a complete expression of the Divine whole. I am an Energy Being.

“Bad events,” past or present, are happening to bring you into your true divine nature. The block… is the bridge. The problem… is the solution. Life is constantly trying to wake you up to your innate brilliance. Isn’t it time to be a willing participant? By practicing unconditional love towards yourself, you realize you are far greater than your protective personality. There is no ‘bad part’ in you. Those parts are there to wake you up to your divinity. Playing small keeps you at #1 consciousness and painfully at the effect of all the conditions around you. It is time to shine in a way that changes your life.

Self-Love: I happen to life. No matter what happened, I am responsible for my life right now.

Marianne Williamson ~ Monday night lectures

In #3 consciousness: Invites you to yield to the greater love that is beyond what you can give yourself.

Be Flexible with King Yoga (no Postures Required)

“The child inside of you knows how to take things as they come, how to deal most effectively and happily with everything and everyone it encounters on this planet. If you can recapture that childlike essence of your being, you can stay ‘forever young at heart.” Wayne Dyer

By Chrissie Blaze One way to reclaim and retain our youthfulness is to remain flexible in body, mind and spirit. When we refuse to change, we ossify, and the more we ossify the harder it is to change. I can give you an example with my own back. As a writer, I spend a lot of time in front of a computer and if I forget to stretch, my back becomes stiff. The more my back aches, the more I remain in one position because it hurts to stretch! If I am not careful, my back can suddenly go out and I end up staring at the ceiling counting flies until my back heals again. This self-inflicted period of stillness forces me to have a shift in my attitude towards a more flexible approach. It is like that with all the crystallized places in our mind as well as our body. Even those little fearful places we have in our hearts, all build up resistance. This resistance stops us from making a shift. Staying flexible in mind, body and spirit is important so that when the time comes for us to change, we can do so without pain. On the spiritual path it’s good to be like the Ninja – flexible and nimble, always watching, waiting and prepared to spring into action at a moments notice.

Hatha yoga is another great way to remain flexible. Yoga is now a part of modern life whereas just a few decades ago, it was relatively unknown in the West. However, even today, most people equate yoga with the asanas, or physical postures of Hatha Yoga. Yoga means union with God and there are many different forms of yoga, all leading to enlightenment through the raising of the kundalini within the spine and the opening of the higher chakras. Hatha Yoga was considered a preparatory yoga in which to begin this vital journey we all must take. Other yogas include Raja Yoga, Jnani Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Mudra Yoga and more. I was fortunate to be a direct disciple for over 20 years of a realized Master of Yoga from the West, Dr. George King, who had gained mastery over all these forms of yoga and had reached a point where he could raise kundalini fully and consciously and gain the elevated bliss state of Samadhi. However, Dr. King taught that the greatest yoga in these days

is not hatha yoga or the others I have mentioned – but karma yoga – the yoga of right action and service. He urged the adepts and masters of the world to leave their retreats and states of bliss, come out into the world and use their enhanced abilities in service to our suffering world. His life and work exemplified his teaching. He left behind his own bliss states to turn his advanced consciousness to developing and designing global healing missions through combining science with spirituality. He was a Master for this Age of Aquarius – inspired yet practical; a visionary yet also a realist. When he left this earth plane in 1997, he left behind a legacy of Spiritual missions designed to bring help and healing to humanity which the organization he founded, The Aetherius Society, is continuing into the future. This legacy includes several global healing missions such as Operation Prayer Power in which the spiritual, prayerful efforts of ordinary people are enhanced by advanced radionic

equipment and then radiated to places of need and global disasters. This is conducted weekly in five centers of the world including The Aetherius Society in Royal Oak, Michigan. As well as service to others, Dr. King also taught the importance of selfdevelopment. He devised simple yet effective and powerful spiritual practices. Ever the practical Master, he knew that the need was for spiritual action – not for self-perfection. The need is urgent, and the need is now. After the passing of Dr. George King, the International Directors of The Aetherius Society named the path that he had taught us – King Yoga. This yoga is a powerful path of self-development through spiritual practices and world service that is relevant for our world at this time of increasing global crises, and relevant for this Aquarian Age. On June 22, I will be giving a series of interactive classes on King Yoga on Saturdays from 11:00 – 12 noon. I hope you can join me. These classes will include a short talk and then practice, designed to help us realize our great spiritual potential. Each class will conclude with some aspect of service to others through prayer, directed intention, visualization and healing. Remember, this is King Yoga – no postures required! Chrissie Blaze Chrissie Blaze is an author of twelve published books; an ordained priest in The Aetherius Society and Spiritual teacher. She is an international speaker and radio show host and was a direct disciple of renowned Spiritual Master and Founder of The Aetherius Society, Dr. George King, for over twenty years. www.chrissieblaze.com; www. aetheriusmi.org

Staying Young Forever By Miche Lame’ How can we stay in the springtime of our youth? We know we can do our best to stay in shape with exercise and nutrition which will help keep us young. It’s very concrete and selfexplanatory, especially if you get a good coach. What about your emotional, mental and spiritual states? How do you stay young in those areas? You can get a coach for those areas too. To keep emotionally and mentally young means keeping a child-like curiosity, creativity, and an open heart. We have the ability to continually learn and ask questions to grow with. Here are some of the things you can do to keep mentally young: - Learn something new. It helps create neuroplasticity, creating new neuron pathways in your brain. •

Develop purpose in your life. This gives you focus, increasing your energy.

Get enough sleep. The body, including your brain, heals during sleep.

Read new books. This keeps your brain thinking.

Do puzzles. They create different ways of perceiving the world and help keep you young at heart.

Play games. Playing games you liked when young might be a start.

Go out in nature. Studies have shown nature is emotionally calming and connecting.

Doodle, draw, create and dance. Find the joy in creativity and movement.

Smile and laugh more. This helps maintain an uplifting mood.

Be spontaneous. Live and be in the moment.

There are also activities you can do to be youthful in spirit: •

Breathe. Visualize bringing in the energy of Source.

Meditate. Connect with the Divine through guided or focused meditation.

Journal. Document your inner growth.

Go outside and connect with nature. When we connect with nature, we connect with the Divine.

Be mindful. When you live each moment in the moment, there is only timelessness.

We are already timeless in a way because our spirits are timeless. The more we connect with spirit and be in the moment, the more we inhabit the energy of timelessness, a youthful spirit. We continue gaining wisdom while enjoying being young at heart. The Dali Lama is a great example of one who maintains a youthful spirit while enjoying wisdom. We can all aspire to maintain this youthfulness of spirit while gracefully growing more mature. We can all have more fun, youthful exuberance and joy in life when we are connected with the Divine, connected with our heart and soul. We can stay young forever -body, emotions, mind, and soul. “What If” By Carolyn Simon If you have read my articles, you are aware that I talk a great deal about consciousness. I am always referring to one’s consciousness because it contains the thought activity that outwardly impacts each of our lives. This month’s theme deals with youthfulness, asking the question: How can we keep our mindset, our physical body, and our approach to life, young and filled with a youthful spirit, while at the same time experiencing the effects of change and aging? My answer to that question is Consciousness. Do you remember the definition I gave of consciousness in a previous article? It is the sum total of your thoughts, feelings; your belief system pertaining to any area of your life; your likes and dislikes and the rationale behind each; your actions and reactions to various life experiences. The totality of who you think yourself to be. It is your beingness. It is who you are being at any given moment in time. So, I ask you with this definition of consciousness, what are you believing right now about youthfulness and aging? Or should I say, what is your belief as it pertains to maintaining youthfulness and aging? Are you believing that you should look a certain way when you reach a certain age? Are you believing that at a certain age you should wear a certain type of clothing? Are you believing that because of a certain age your body will be incapable of functioning properly? Are you believing that as you age you have no control over what happens to you physically? What are you believing? What if you had believed a different way? How would you feel, act, and live your life? How would your life be different?

When I see the Capitol One commercial on television and it asks the question, “What’s in Your Wallet?”, I’m always reminded of a Sunday talk I gave with that title. But my question, “What’s in Your Wallet,” was referring to one’s consciousness instead of the best credit card. It was asking each individual to examine their thought processes and eradicate, eliminate, destroy those unproductive thought patterns and reframe, replace those patterns with more productive life-giving beliefs. So, if you are lacking vim, vigor, and vitality, and are having a hard time keeping a youthful approach to healthy aging, examine your thoughts and beliefs in this area. Or, visit me and we can work together through counseling and hypnosis techniques to examine your beliefs and create a new, dynamic life script. You’ve got the Power! A Youthful State of Mind By Susan deCaussin

So many people feel trapped in their lives -whether it be in a job, a relationship or a certain life situation. Many of them clearly know what they’d rather be doing, but either they don’t feel worthy, or are paralyzed with fear of failure. For many, staying in an undesirable situation can be much easier to cope with than the fear of the unknown. How did we get here? How did we go from being carefree children, dreaming of the countless possibilities in life, to stress-filled adults? As we age, we adopt limiting beliefs that create “road closed” signs in our minds. We allow the fear of failure to keep us from moving in a different direction. We don’t realize that roadblocks aren’t meant to stop us in our tracks. They’re meant to push us into new directions. You see, roadblocks are actually directional signs that are placed along our way by the universe. Unfortunately, the nature of being human causes us to rebel against those signs since we inherently want to resist change what in your life needs healing?

The difference between the mindset of a young person and that of an older one is that the younger person is not yet aware of the struggles that oftentimes accompany the events of life. I’m sure that you’ve seen it. Children are fearless. They will pursue anything that grabs their attention and stimulates their sense of adventure and curiosity. They don’t sit around for days, weeks, or months, analyzing each life decision. They know how to be present in every moment, without needing to worry over the “what if’s”. So, here’s a few “what if” scenarios: What if we began to pattern ourselves after children? What if we allowed our lives to be directed by the things that ignite a passion within us? What if we allowed ourselves to get off the merry-go-round that society has us on, and stopped believing that life is simply about punching a clock and bringing home a hefty paycheck. Don’t you realize that when you pursue the things that you really enjoy, you’ll be able to do them better than anything else? It’s that excited energy that fuels your ability to achieve success in all areas that kindle passion in your soul. So, when you stumble upon roadblocks, instead of feeling defeated -- allowing them to stop you in your tracks -- learn to be grateful, and accept them for what they are… a simple course correction. With each wrong turn in life, we may feel like time or energy has been wasted, however, there are always amazing lessons hiding in each twist and turn. Learn to appreciate EVERY experience fearlessly, knowing you are safe. If all your actions, thoughts and words come from a place of love, you will always have a safety net beneath you with each adventure that you embark upon. That safety net is the love and support of others. It’s not by accident that we are all here together, having this earthbound experience. We are here to do this as a team, and team members never leave a teammate behind. Trust in this. Remember, we are all simply actors, acting out roles in a magnificent play. This is not home. This is only a temporary assignment. Don’t allow yourself to return home with unfinished business. Discover your passion and pursue it fearlessly. Trust that all of your needs are being provided for and enjoy this journey to the fullest. Namaste’, Susan Susan deCaussin established Healing Methods, in Troy, MI. There is Much More to Hypnosis than You May Realize By Phillip Rosenbaum

Do you know that there are some amazing ways people are using hypnosis today? Many people, of course, will see a hypnotist to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, overcome undesirable habits, increase their self-esteem, conquer phobias and even eliminate debilitating anxiety. These are certainly great reasons to have a hypnosis session. But there are other uses for hypnosis that you may not even be aware of. If you are open to the possibility, you can experience a past life. You can even do what is called, future-life progression, where people go into the future to see what life will be like if they continue doing what they have been doing, or what it could be like if they make some changes. Dr. Brian Weiss, who was a prominent psychiatrist and often used past-life regression would also, at times, do future-life progression. He once worked with a client who was extremely prejudiced against Muslims. In a future life, she, herself, was a Muslim, and she was extremely hateful toward Russians. She did another future-life progression, and in this one, she hated a different group of people. Dr. Weiss pointed out that if she did not give up this hatred and prejudice, she would continue to have similar incarnations until she finally let go of the hatred. She was able to release the hatred soon after the session, and in the next future-life progression she was a kind person, free of prejudice, desiring to help humanity. Obviously, the future-life progressions were very beneficial to her. Another thing you can do with hypnosis is to go to what some call the “Super Conscious” level and actually communicate with “masters” or “guides” or “angels.” Here you can receive invaluable advice and wisdom, and get help for practically any problem you are experiencing. You can find out what your

purpose is, what career would be best for you, and even ways to improve your relationships. You could find out why you are having various problems and learn the best course of action for you to take. You could gain insight into why you have a certain illness and what would be the best way to deal with this. Many people have even received healings from these masters or guides. There is another type of hypnosis that you may not be familiar with. It has several names, one of which is called the “Hypnotic Coma State.” For this, the hypnotist guides you to the deepest level you can go to without falling asleep. People who have gone into this state report having such a blissful feeling that they did not wish to come out of it. Some people take drugs to reach this type of euphoria, but that is not necessary. Not only does this state feel wonderful, but it can also replace drugs to alleviate pain—the pain of childbirth, dental surgery, etc. Just as one heals with sleep, one also heals while in this state. One well-known hypnotist, Gerald F. Kein, who often works with the Hypnotic Coma State, has been able to teach people how to put themselves into a similar state using “self-hypnosis.” Imagine having a tool like this, which you can use to ameliorate chronic pain, to relieve stress, or to enter this blissful state of mind. Perhaps if more people were aware of all the benefits of hypnosis there would not be this terrible drug addiction problem that so many people are struggling with today. A number of hypnotists believe that every person should be taught self-hypnosis in school because it is such a valuable tool. It can be used to reduce anxiety, to do better on exams, to improve sports performance, and so much more. If you would like to experience hypnosis and see if it can be of benefit to you, please call Phillip Rosenbaum at 248-688-6469. One of the first things you will learn is self-hypnosis, a powerful tool that you can use for the rest of your life. Old Habits & Negative Thought Patterns Keeping you Stuck? Get Unstuck Now

Father’s Day

Pauline

By Pauline Dettloff

♥ Tarot Cards ♥ Mediumship ♥ Spirit Channeling ♥ Clairvoyant ♥ Clairaudient

This is the month of June when we celebrate Father’s Day. I look back at my father and I want to say what a beautiful man I had as a father. He was definitely his own person. He looked like John Wayne -- he was tall, and not what I would call super good looking. But, he was my dad.

Readings by appointment

He was a special dad because he was definitely an interesting man. I know that we can have good or bad fathers. That’s how we get here. Some fathers care more about their families than others; some are very nurturing while others walk out and never come back.

My father took on a set of twins, my sister and I. He fell in love with my mother and through the years he stayed in love with her. He was good to my sister and I and they had a daughter, so then we were three. What was amazing is that he played fair all the way through the marriage; he never made me feel different, which can sometimes happen. We were a family. My father was old school for sure. We used to play cards, pinochle. That’s why today I have a hard time with euchre! There are men in the world who get married and realize that this is their family, and they honor it all the way through the marriage and are good to their children. Those are the men that I want to say, “THANK YOU” to because they stayed the course and took care of the family, good or bad. There is a short story I’d like to share with you about my father. I stuttered very badly as a child. I was around 12 years old, and kids made fun of me at school. I had plenty of challenges growing up but this was one of the biggest ones. My father took the patience and the time to tell me to slow down so that I could speak. My mind was going faster than my words so he helped me, taking time out of his life, to teach me how to talk. To me that was a gift, an absolutely amazing gift, and every now and then when the words don’t come out right, I think of him. It’s been a long time since he’s been here, but he’s still in my heart and so are his memories. I remember an amazing man who took on a set of twins, a little sister who had heart issues, and a beautiful woman that he loved, my mom, and he never once looked back. On June 16, Father’s Day, the Michigan Psychic Fair will be in Roseville at the Holiday Inn Express. Come and see us! I know there are a lot of amazing fathers on the other side and we can touch base with them through a psychic or a medium, at Michigan Psychic Fair. As always, Love and Light from Pauline Michigan Psychic Fair. Visit our website at www.MichiganPsychicFair. com and please see our ad for the next fair dates. We hope to see you at the next one.

Using Crystals to Maintain Youthfulness By Jennifer VanderWal People often feel hurried, or as if they don’t have enough time in their lives. In Atlantis, we lived to be over 350 years young. In the crystal healing that I facilitate, I explain how our belief systems are shortening our ability to live long, healthy lives. Our thoughts create our reality, they also tell our physical, mental, spiritual and emotional bodies how healthy to be and how long we will live. These belief systems are taken on from doctors, stress, genetics and everywhere else in our lives. Louise L. Hayes, a pioneer in helping people understand how their thoughts create their realities, used one affirmation daily, “I AM happy and grateful for my eternal youth.” Dying in her 90s, she didn’t look older than 40 years old. Not only can affirmations be used to help maintain perfect health as well as our longevity. Crystals can also be used by making a gemstone elixir, using them in healing rejuvenating arrays while we sleep, and meditating with them aiding in our cellular regeneration and adding to our youthfulness. They also aid in helping us pin-point our beliefs as well as fears that we have about aging and health, and helping us release them. Along with belief systems, our environment adds to our cellular degeneration. Using the crystals in healing-crystal arrays along with our intentions can aid us in not being continually bombarded and subjected to these energies. Some stones that can be used in a gemstone elixir or crystal array are selenite, rhodochrosite, amber, tourmaline, gold, and apophyllite. Many cultures from the past were obsessed with eternal youth and immortality. Throughout history, people have talked about the elixir of eternal youth. Jennifer VanderWal Jennifer has been a Melody Crystal Healing Instructor/Facilitator since 2004. A master of the Usui Tibetan Karuna Seiryoko system of Reiki, she offers readings, spiritual counseling, EFT, teaches crystal healing classes and offers crystal healing techniques at Bodyworks Healing Center & Journey to Health Chakra. fleeting whims of immaturity.

Secrets of Joy By John Ashbrook Joy: this simple, three-letter word contains many secrets of creating joy in one’s life. The grand goal of the force of life as it surges through the universe is to create joy and spread it into infinity. Joy is the essence of life because it is freedom. Where there is freedom, there must be joy, and where joy exists, there must also be freedom. They are inseparable. Let’s examine the word “joy” in the light of numerology. In this way, we can unlock the secrets of life contained in this beautiful, simple, and yet complex word. In numerology, the word joy reads as, 167. This number combination is very powerful because it speaks of spiritual maturity and the power it brings to one’s life. The number 167 reads insistence, balanced by patience. This is the very principle by which all creation is possible. Where there is no patience, joy cannot possibly exist. This is so because when insistence to have one’s way is left unchecked, it becomes so preoccupied with making things happen right now, that there is no time to really enjoy the results of one’s efforts. Instead, it’s on to the next demand. This is immaturity and it breeds dissatisfaction and despair, the opposite of joy. When one brings patience into the mix, it becomes possible to not only enjoy the results of one’s efforts, but also the process of creation itself. When a person begins to take the time to observe their life, they begin to see how they create it, and of course, this can only lead to improved, more efficient, more fulfilling creation. This is the mark of maturity and the benefit of an attitude of patience. It is

26

obvious that this balance can only result in a higher, more profound level of joyful living. Now, let’s go further with our numerological examination of joy. The number 167 adds up to 14 (1+6+7=14). This number reads “insistence to change in the positive and insistence to not change in the negative”. The will to change, to grow, to expand one’s life is the key to joy. The will to keep everything the same is stagnation and the essence of misery. The will to progress as spiritual beings requires a balanced effort of action and patience. The will to keep everything the same requires only the insistence to do so, but this attitude conflicts with life. Life is movement, growth, expansion, constant expression and renewal. Life cannot be held still; it cannot be stifled. Change is inevitable, so one who resists change is not in harmony with life, and they lose the ability to direct their life and have a say in what will be. Those who are willing to surrender to the process of life, trusting change, not resistant to the powerful flow, will be honored by life. They will gain the ability to direct their life in a meaningful way in accordance with the natural laws of a benevolent universe. They will eventually get what they want, but in the meantime, their patient, trusting attitude will enable them to really enjoy the ride, experiencing it all. They live in the calm, ever-expanding moment of eternal joy. Their happiness is not governed by the

w w w. B o d y M i n d S p i r i t G u i d e . c o m

The final number of joy is 5 (1+6+7=14, and 1+4=5). Five is also the number of life (3+6+9+5=23, and 2+3=5). Joy and life are connected by this common vibration and they are also connected to this challenge – freedom of expression. To express your individuality is to be alive and joy is the product of selfexpression. Unlimited self-expression equals unlimited joy of living. Nobody is one identity. We must be careful about becoming too comfortable with one way of living. When our security depends on expressing our life in the same way over and over again, freedom is lost, change becomes something we fear, joy is eliminated, and we become governed by, what Colin Wilson referred to as the “triviality of everydayness.” The lower self lives in fear and clings to its safe, limited identity, shrinking from adventure and new experiences, causing one’s life to drift into a dull routine. This anti-living is the prime cause of aging and health problems. Machines wear out and break down, human beings should not. Life rejuvenates itself. The healthy, balanced soul senses when one way of living is “worn out” and immediately seeks new avenues of self-expression. Such action releases the incredible healing powers of elevated self-esteem. So, these are the secrets of joy. Take action on your desires, but live in patience. Embrace change when life beckons you to do so and endeavor to continually express the infinite depths of your God-given individuality. These are some pretty big secrets for such a little word. entirely on your true path.

Time to be the Spark of Creation

Switch this up every day, one day do them all together, the next day split each part up at different times of the day. Do the first when you wake in the morning, second midday and third before bedtime. Switch it up as many different ways as you can come up with. Let your self feel the expansion and connection.

By Todd Stockwell Hello my friends, Hope everyone is loving and enjoying the exercises and awakening we’ve been doing this past year and especially the amazing growth that comes with them. I’m running into more and more of you letting me know how valuable these exercises are for you and I am honored to be able to help you all on your paths. It’s very exciting to hear your growth so please make sure to share your experience with me and others. Just as I said the past few months it is very important at this time to do our highest work, be open to training with someone who can truly help you. The most important thing now is to be in the highest love and light space to reach that next level of consciousness. We have to let go of our lesser selves and truly love ourselves so we can love all and awaken to our highest light form. We can continue with a similar process that we have in past months with a new focus. We will work inward so focus inward as we have in earlier exercises on the flame at the base of the heart chakra. As we did in those exercises, let’s begin with expanding that flame outward until it fills the room. Now also focus on a red flame just below your belly button. Expand them both out and focus on the red mixing with a golden light above your head and creating a golden peach light. Now expand that light to fill the universe. You can focus on bringing a star that is far beyond all other stars and larger than all of them put together. You can focus on merging with this star, Now make the statement, I am the spark that creates all. Lean forward slightly with your head, place your tongue to the roof of your mouth and take three deep breathes. Now focus on the back of the heart chakra opening up and the back of the flame just below your belly button blasting a flame outward and let your system connect. While focusing on fire start with this chant, Avaatoonyaweh, Now meditate for 11 minutes, set a timer.

As always, it is very important to read and share this as much as possible it will help you, your path, your awakening, your enlightenment and your truest service to the Universe. plane. More information on this is too deep to be covered in this article. However, I will put this into my book so you will have a full explanation of how we move to other planes of existence once we graduate the earth dimension.

Reincarnation & Karma By Wendy Powers Nugent Most likely, you have heard of karma and maybe have even explored the idea of reincarnation. But is it real? How does it relate to your life and how can you find out who you were in your past incarnations? Karma simply means lessons to be learned during your lifetime. Unfortunately, people usually associate karma to payback or punishment for doing bad things. This is just not true. Negative karma created within your current life can result in a payback situation, however, keep in mind it is for our soul to learn, not as a punishment. We can and do carry over lessons for the soul’s learning from another lifetime. In fact, when we enter our new life, we decide ahead of time what we need to experience in order to evolve our soul to the next spiritual level. It’s much like picking your classes for your next semester of college -- including picking a major. Yes, we sometimes need to go through very difficult experiences to reach a cleaning of negative actions from other lifetimes. This is not punishment. These are lessons and your task is spiritual graduation. The saying, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” keeps your perspective on how to conduct your life. Therefore, I have often talked about “paying it forward.” This means without thinking of any reward or recognition for your good deed, you give to another unconditionally and with joy. You will find that good deeds to your benefit will manifest as a result. Those unexpected miracles of life are from your positive actions toward another from this life or a past life. What is reincarnation? Most people will associate reincarnation with Buddhism. Even though it is accepted in the Buddhist religion as part of the human cycle of life, reincarnation is not limited to a religious belief. There is too much evidence that has been gathered and verified showing past lives. How many times do we recycle our soul into a new life? Well, that depends on if you are a fast or slow learner. If you follow the laws of karma as I have outlined above, you will evolve quickly. You will work through your human earth experience and move to another level of existence in another 28

When we choose to enter a new life, we pick our parents, situations, and lessons we want to evolve through. Sometimes our lessons are not for our learning, but for others in our soul circle or even for the greater good of society. How many times do you reincarnate? That depends on your quickness in evolving through all your life lessons. Some souls can be as little as 10 lives, while others can have as many as thousands of cycles. How do you find out who you were in your past life? Well, best to go to a qualified hypnotherapist. If you find that you are stuck in a difficult pattern in your life that seems to repeat or you have fears that hold you back from moving towards positive change and success, it might serve you to see a hypnotherapist. Bad habits like overeating or smoking may seem like a behavior problem only, however you may discover something is hanging on from another life that causes you to eat or drink to excess; likewise, smoking or acting on a polarizing feeling which drives unhealthy behavior. For instance, if you are overweight and just can’t seem to get it under control, it could be that in a past life you did not have enough to eat. Perhaps you even experienced starvation and famine. Then in this life, your instinct may be to live without knowing the fear of hunger, but you haven’t yet found a healthy balance between feast and famine. Through my psychic readings, I can see into past lives as well. In a reading, I see if my client is in a loop of repeating a lesson, such as feeling stuck or anxious, or picking the same type of relationship -- only to fail and fall into a hopeless cycle of bad lovers. I can tune into the reason and see why and how to move forward, releasing the karmic lesson to be free to move forward. Wendy Powers Nugent Clairvoyant, Minister, Writer, and Certified Counselor. JUNE 2019

If I Could Turn Back Time By Tatiana Scavnicky

June is the start of my absolute favorite time of year! It feels like a promise, that everything will be alright. Tiki torches and fires will be ablaze and “the” moment I wait for, the first firefly. The word June comes from the Latin word, iuniores, meaning “younger ones”. I immediately recall the years I’ve been putting on my favorite bikini top and peach sunning shorts. I suppose I’m engaging in a rite of the return of the golden sun, and my youth. I feel as if I’m reborn. I believe that I am.

I've learned.... That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

In 1981, psychologist Ellen Langer did a five-day study on aging, called the “counterclockwise study”. Eight men in their 70’s were taken to a retreat designed to totally reflect the year 1959. They were immersed in the news, current events, music, politics, and life as it was back then. After a week, their strength, eyesight, hearing, and cognition improved, and they looked visibly younger.

&

She also did a study with maids who didn’t see their very physical jobs as exercise. They were told certain tasks were like working on exercise machines. They experienced reduced blood pressure, an actual shift in body-mass index and weight loss. Other scientific studies show that just thinking about working out can cause actual physical changes! Langer’s next study will be to take women diagnosed with stage four breast cancer back 10 years in time when they were cancer-free. Her hopes are to see tumor sizes reduced or gone altogether. Imagine that.

“Now you’re talking my language!” Have you ever heard someone use the phrase, “Now you’re talking my language!” when she wanted to say you and she were on the same wavelength? Well there is a way you can use specific language to establish a subconscious rapport that makes the listener think that. Take the following 4 sentences: “I see what you mean” “I hear what you’re saying” “That seems logical” “That feels right to me” All 4 have broadly the same meaning, but the first sentence uses visual words, the second uses auditory (i.e. to do with sound) ones, the third logical ones and the fourth emotional. We all use words to describe our thoughts and the way we do it reflects our thought process. If your thoughts are mainly a voice in your head, you’ll tend to use auditory words when describing what you’re thinking. If they’re mostly pictures, you’ll use visual ones. If you’re a very logical person you’ll use logical words and if you’re more into feelings and emotions you’ll use emotional ones. The $10 term for these 4 ways of expressing ourselves is ‘representational systems,’ but for simplicity’s sake I’m just going to call them ‘language types’. Let’s look at visual and auditory language first. ‘Visuals’ take information in through their eyes. They like visual stimuli and would rather read something than be told it. They have difficulty concentrating via their ears and quickly switch off when listening to lectures delivered in a monotone by speakers who stand motionless behind a lectern. They forget verbal instructions easily because their minds wander without something to look at. Any time you’re making an important point in a 30

question, explain, sound, discord, listen, harmony, articulate, overtones, babble, volume, outspoken, dialogue, silence, deaf, harmonize, tune in/out, rings a bell, quiet as a mouse, voiced an opinion, clear as a bell, loud and clear, purrs like a kitten, on another note, all ears.

presentation, back it up with something on the screen or the visuals probably both won’t take it in, or if they do, they’ll quickly forget it. They’re not distracted by background or external noise, as they simply don’t hear a lot of it. They’re good at spelling because they ‘see’ words in their brains. They also think in terms of pictures, and therefore describe their thoughts and opinions using visual language, because when they think of something they ‘see’ it in their brain. They tend to talk quickly because visual memories are quick and easy to access. They’ll say, “I see what you mean” and “That looks about right.” Typical words and phrases used by them include: see, look, bright, clear, vision, read, perspective, big picture, view, focus, reveal, shape, appear, transparent, illuminate, show, vivid, imagine, short sighted, sight for sore eyes, take a peek, tunnel vision , bird’s eye view, draw you a picture, shed some light, crystal clear. This list isn’t meant to be exhaustive and you can probably think of quite a few more yourself. ‘Auditories’ take information in through their ears. My ex-wife is an Auditory and whenever we bought anything with an instruction book, she’d just hand it to me and say, “Summarize it and tell me what it says.” They’re good at learning via listening, can easily pick up the words to songs and can be good at learning languages (which they usually learn by listening to audio CDs). They like music and talking on the phone and are easily distracted by background noise, as they just can’t help hearing and listening to it. No matter how many times you tell them to ignore it, they simply can’t. They think in terms of sounds, and when speaking explain themselves using auditory words and phrases, because their brains, literally, ‘talk’ to them. They’ll often talk to themselves, sometimes moving their lips while they do so. They’ll say, “That sounds about right” and “I hear you loud and clear”. Other typical words and phrases include: quote, hear, tell,

‘Logical’ people tend to think . . . logically (nor prize for guessing that one!). They think along linear, logical lines and like processes, order and planning. They tend to be data-oriented and like numbers, statistics, barcharts and graphs. To buttress an argument they’ll use facts more than stories. They use words like: change, experience, understand, analysis, logic, question, conceive, benefits, objectives, measure, advantages/disadvantages, know, think, learn, process, decide, planning, thoroughly, examine, criteria, implement, calculate, analyze, consider, describe in detail, figure out, make sense of, pay attention to, word for word, without a doubt, doesn’t add up, step by step, chart progress. ‘Emotional’ people are governed by their . . . emotions (no prize for that one either!). They are ‘people people.’ They use (and relate to) stories more than facts, and rely on gut feel and intuition rather than numbers. They’ say things like: cold, warm, excited, angry, happy, sad, tender, heated, frustrated, elated, touch, soft, lukewarm, vibes, penetrating, gut feel, grasp, sense, feel, hard, unfeeling, solid, touch, catch on, tap into, argument, make contact, throw out, firm foundation, get a handle on, get in touch with, hand in hand. To complicate it slightly, we tend to use the 4 language types in combinations. People tend to be either a visual or an auditory, and either be logical or emotional. So we have 4 combinations: visual/emotional, visual/logical, auditory/ emotional, auditory/logical. SOURCE: http://www.speaklikeapro. co.uk/Talking_My_Language.htm JUNE 2019

When doubts arise, examine your self-limiting beliefs. Meditate on what it would be like to attain your goals without those constraining ideas. Maintain that faith and expanded vision throughout your day! Financial abundance flows in, but make sure you attend to your most crucial bills first before you play.

C

ancer (June 21 – July 22) — It’s easy to get frustrated or discouraged if you’re not getting your needs met. Meditate and reflect upon with whom you’re interacting. Are you somehow seeking water from an ‘empty well’? Don’t let other people’s emotional limits make you feel bad about yourself! Seek out friends, relationships and jobs that are an “energetic match”. Find generous, positive and loving people. Also, focus on the concept that the Universe is a place of all sorts of abundance and wants you to be fulfilled!

L

eo (July 23 – Aug. 22) — Meditate on anger, irritation, and resentments. Clear out your mind of what’s been rattling around in there. Some issues can be imagined or blown out of proportion. Some are valid but need grace, tact,

and timing. You need a clear head from meditation to discern. And also seek advice from a trusted, wise and impartial friend. Once your mind and heart are unburdened, you’ll have renewed energy physically, and fresh motivation for goals. Also, seek advice about finances before making big decisions, and beware of spending as a way to “let off steam” as you explore unconscious patterns.

V

irgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) — If you’re having challenges in relationships, be playful together. Plan fun activities that are new to you both. Play sports or board games for friendly “conflict”. Spend time with mutual friends who are active and have a good sense of humor. If single, do active things that explore new parts of yourself. Meditate on seeing yourself in fresh ways, not just “as you are” as if you’re set in stone. Also meditate on your partner as a fluid, evolving person as well, because they are! If single, connect with people who aren’t your usual type, yet share your values.

L

ibra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) — Observe your reactions to authority figures, such as supervisors at work, or even your spouse/partner when you’re having conflict. In an effort to always be nice, you can give away your power. Right now, planets show how you get defensive or panicked when feeling “bossed around”. Meditate on healing core issues with parents or family, looking for similar patterns. Also, remember you’re always in control of your reactions to others. Ponder the truth that you’re steering your own ship, which is hard to believe when you’re triggered by an old story. Even a few deep breaths can restore you to center, so breathe before you think, speak or act!

S

corpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) — Spiritual growth is a gradual process, but you

might feel very impatient right now! As a Scorpio, you’re blessed with visualizing and believing in perfection but cursed by the self-flagellation of not attaining what you know is possible. Meditate on selflove, and allow yourself errors or lapses in judgment. Focus on loving yourself each moment. Gently align your thoughts toward kindness and patience, and ironically, you’ll advance in leaps and bounds in ways that are vital to you!

S

agittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) — A bunch of planets work together to help you tap into passion! That can mean sexuality, creativity, physical energy or financial abundance. You’re naturally enthusiastic. Meditate on what experiences or acquired belief systems snuffed your spirit. Find ways to forgive the past and rebuild trust in life. You might even find you have a food allergy or that environmental toxins weigh down your joy. Have a heart-centered practice each day, even as simple as walking in nature for a few minutes. Your intuition will reawaken and you’ll feel excited and internally directed once again!

C

apricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) — Don’t let your perfectionism and self-criticism keep you from love! You don’t have to be perfect to be in a healthy, happy partnership. Also, be aware of picking fights with those close to you as a way to “prove” how unworthy you are. Or, watch for exaggerating everyone’s flaws to justify your emotional isolation. Meditate on how many people love you and are inspired by you. Think of friends, family, your spouse, children, co-workers, even pets! As you are gentle with yourself, be gentle with others who have their own fears of bonding and potential rejection.

A

quarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) — Meditate on how habits of irritation or old resentments can limit your vitality. Make a list of things that make you unhappy. Gently breathe in and then take a very long, slow exhale, imagining one of the items on your list leaving your body, mind, and soul. Continue with each item JUNE 2019

until you feel renewed and reinvigorated. You can also practice when having a massage, or during a yoga class. Lots of people can be edgy this month, so remember to have compassion for others who are as uncomfortable as you’ve been. Inspiring solutions to problems will pop into your mind because you’re not bogged down with petty “junk”. Laughter is also a great stress reliever now, as is playing with pets!

P

isces (Feb. 19 – March 20) — You’re so giving and accepting, Pisces! But also remember boundaries and limits. If you’re super irritated, don’t lash out at others. Meditate on how you’ve allowed a pattern to develop. When you’re calmer, you can communicate your needs to the “offenders”. Set your new limits clearly and respectfully, but it’s up to you to check in with yourself often to see if you’re maintaining those limits. It’s a “retraining process” for you as well as for people around you. Be gentle and consistent with everyone involved!

A

ries (March 21 – April 19) — If you’re frustrated at work or anywhere in your life, resist the tendency to “ram” through the issue with force. Remember the power of your intuition! Cultivate it with meditation each day. Even ten minutes of sitting with deep breathing will attune your mind to ingenious ideas that bring alignment to everyone involved. As solutions flow into your life, you might even get an amazing promotion or brand new job since you’ll be seen as even more valuable than before! Practice “mini-meditations” with household members for harmony there, too!

T

aurus (April 20 – May 20) — Remember the power of words! Be careful of complaining about problems, which can block your intuition from bringing you answers. If you think the issue is insurmountable, you can overlook whispers from your soul that hold the key to freedom. Speaking affirmations and feeling what it’s like when the issue is resolved, makes “magic” happen in your life! Hang out with friends who believe in positive shifts. Ask them to help keep your mind centered on the bright future that is on its way!

A LESSON IN PATIENCE

by Robert Cronce, Brown City, Michigan In the spring of 1960, I was riding with my dad on his milk route. He spotted a small turtle crossing the road, stopped to pick it up, and put in the glove compartment. He told me not to play with it until we got home. Of course, when he got back to the truck at our subsequent stop to pick up milk cans, I was crying over a fresh bite on my finger. The moral of the story: It’s wise to follow instructions. And if you are going to poke something, use a stick instead of your finger.

HOW I LEARNED THE VALUE OF WORK by Rudy Berdine, Irvine, California

My dad owned a fruit market on a busy street. The sidewalk in front of his store collected dust and trash, which needed to be swept daily. At age six, I used to hide behind bags of potatoes when my dad asked me to sweep, but while sweeping one day, I began to find dollar bills under the dust and trash. I had no idea where the money came from. My dad had been putting money on the sidewalk—and soon, I was happy to sweep even when no money was found.

GOOD VIBRATIONS

by Nancy Perkins, St. Johns, Michigan My dad died unexpectedly at age 78, leaving our family heartbroken. During the funeral mass, my sister felt her phone vibrate in her purse. She was a little surprised that someone would be calling her, knowing she was at dad’s funeral mass. Afterward, she found there was a message: “Hi, this is your dad,” said the male voice. “I wanted to let you know I made it home.” The caller obviously had the wrong number, but the message was clear. My dad had completed his journey to heaven and wanted us to know. Thanks, Dad—until we meet again.

Magic of Reiki: Pain Control & Healing By Christine Fodor

This month we’re taking a break from the tools found in, “The Ten Keys to Total Freedom,” to talk about the Magic of Reiki for Pain Control & Healing. I’ve done so many modalities and these are by far my favorites. Many people are familiar with Reiki or have heard of it. It’s not just something that massage therapists do, because it’s not a massage at all. It’s really something anyone can learn and use every day. And I’m sure many of you who have already use Reiki have many amazing stories, this one is part of mine. Reiki is a Japanese healing touch modality that can be performed on or off the body, flowing energy like a conduit from Source to the recipient, which could be yourself or someone else. These are my words to greatly simplify a wonderful healing modality with a deep history. For the purposes of this article, I’m choosing to focus on my personal experience rather than a full history and explanation of Reiki. I do teach various Reiki classes so if you’d like to learn more I’m always happy to answer questions and share about one of my favorite subjects. For this article, I’d like to share the Magic of Reiki in my life. I found Reiki when I was sick and western medicine wasn’t providing any long-term solutions, except drugs. I knew there had to be something else out there that could help. Now I use Reiki every day on myself, friends, family, and clients. Technically, we can say that Reiki promotes relaxation. Since I’m also a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant, I can also say that the physiological effects of pain and stress on the body exacerbate the psychological and physical symptoms. Therefore, reducing

40

stress can also help reduce those effects. I have seen Reiki reduce pain and symptoms many times in my own life. Some people may believe that an energy healer or Reiki Master should not have any health issues. Since we haven’t found immortality, it’s safe to say that our physical bodies do have an expiration date eventually. And physical bodies often do require physical intervention. I believe in all of it (western medicine, eastern medicine, homeopathic, alternative) in a combination that best serves the health and well-being of each person. That’s what works for me. I have overcome many health issues, including long-term chronic conditions, and have been able to live a life of wellness to the best of my ability and Reiki is an integral contribution. Recently I found myself in need of extensive dental work, re-doing old dental work plus new with root canals, crowns, etc. This has been an ongoing process since February, with more to go. And I don’t use pain medications. I have been able to tolerate the procedures and pain mostly with Reiki. Some may think, “Well, why didn’t the Reiki heal it in the first place?” If Reiki could repair all the cracks in the tooth, that would be great! Like healing a broken bone automatically, that would be great! It may happen. Jesus did it. It’s possible. Until we can achieve that level of healing, Reiki is a great tool to help with pain and healing. I will use medications when I need them, but personally, I don’t tolerate them well. If you need medications, use them. I do require thyroid medication to live so I am grateful for modern medicine, and modern dentistry. God made all of this available for us too.

w w w. B o d y M i n d S p i r i t G u i d e . c o m

I know that the Reiki did not keep me from having to get dental work but it sure helped the process, like running Reiki while in the dentist’s chair to calm myself and start healing right away. And I can tell you that I have had some miraculous healings. I was once diagnosed with adenomyosis but when they went to check it, it was gone. And when I had to get another mammogram to check a problem area, there was nothing there. I did Reiki every day and whatever it was seemed to magically go away. So I’ve heard at least twice the medical staff say “I don’t know what they were looking at, there’s nothing there.” Yay Reiki! So, whether you are looking to heal personally, improve pain or symptoms, help family members or just be in a more relaxed state of mind, consider Reiki. And if you are already a Reiki Master, consider the possibility of Karuna Reiki® Master with eight more symbols for more Reiki energy. I love it! And I love teaching it! (Karuna Reiki® Master class in June!) Reiki has made such a huge difference in my life. I would like to invite you to consider the gift of Reiki for yourself or your loved ones, whether it’s receiving a session, joining a Reiki Wellness program, or taking a class. I hope it enhances your life and living even more than it has mine. Many Reiki blessings to you! June Creation Questions

Ayurvedic Practices for Youth & Vitality

Is this light or heavy for me? What? How is that a creation question? It’s actually another tool from Access Consciousness (founder Gary Douglas and Dr. Dain Heer). Access Consciousness teaches to follow the path of what is light for you. If it’s light for you then the path will also be light. If it’s heavy then the path will be heavy. I don’t know about you but I would much rather choose a light path than a heavy path.

-- Immediately upon rising, brush your teeth, scrape your tongue and drink a cup of warm water with lemon. Toxins accumulate on the tongue while sleeping, and we don’t want to introduce them back into our system. Tongue scraping acts to stimulate and massage the internal organs. The water with lemon kick-starts the liver for a brand new day of work.

By Christine Fodor

So, what is light and heavy, really? Light is expansive, joy, open, ahhh. Heavy is contraction, constriction, oppression, grrr. So think about something that really lights you up, brings you joy, makes you feel alive… that’s very light for you! Now, think about something that you dread, really don’t want to do and really don’t like… that’s heavy for you! Those are the extremes. Most of the time it’s more subtle. If I’m faced with a choice and I’m not sure if it’s light or heavy, I close my eyes and choose one. Then, we can go five years into the future and ask, “What will my life be like?” Then see what you sense. Some people can easily tell light or heavy. Some may get an emotion like happy or sad. I often feel more open and it’s easier to breathe for light and pressure on my chest, and harder to breathe for heavy. It might be something different for you. And sometimes it’s both light. Well, which one is lighter? Sometimes it’s very subtle and seems like it’s neither. Then ask, ‘Is it just a choice?’ Yes? Then choose what you would like. Sometimes everything is heavy. Then ask, “Am I resisting something?” Yes? Then, “What am I resisting?” Because usually if everything is heavy, you’re resisting something. How do you clear the resistance? That’s where you can use the Access Consciousness Clearing Statement. To learn more about that you can go to www. theclearingstatement.com for more information, or call me. These are fabulous tools to help you create a lighter, brighter life and living. Keep asking questions to create your life. And now you have some new tools to help you along the way. What would it take for you to be able to use the light vs. heavy tool with ease? What would it take for you to be able to clear your resistance so you can choose without limitation? What amazing life and living can you now be and live and choose? How much better can your life really be? Keep asking. Keep choosing. Happy Creating! Profiles in Taste: Meet Farmington’s Farmers and Artisans! Back in 1993, a handful of farmers began selling produce from their trucks in the parking lot in the Village Commons Mall in Farmington. Then in 1996, with encouragement from Market Master Walt Gajewski, a planning partnership between the city and Wayne State University was formed. This committee envisioned the farmers’ market as the focal point for downtown Farmington. In October 2005, construction of the pavilion completed and opened as the new 30,000 square foot Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market. This year marks the market’s 25th Anniversary and second year of winning Best Farmers Market award by WDIV’s Best of Detroit awards! Every week, 40 or more vendors, including 15 local farmers, provide fresh products grown within 400 miles of Farmington. From produce to artisan crafts, to children’s activities and weekly live entertainment, to delicious and hot apple cider doughnuts, it’s no wonder why Farmington receives 80,000 visitors each year. Cooking demonstrations make the market even more appealing to visitors. “We have a chef’s series called, Cooking in the Market,” says Gajewski. “For example, John Cowley & Sons was at the market with a generations-old family recipe demonstrating Irish potato soup. One of the great things about our market is that there’s solidarity amongst all of the vendors,” adds Gajewski. “The market has a good crowd, and the numbers are usually very high,” Mark McCoy says. “It seems like a lot of young people like us too; they buy a lot of our salads. Being the only certified organic vendor here, people look for us.” Though the McCoy’s are in their second year of selling USDA certified organic produce at the Farmington Market, they’ve been in business for seven years. “People come out to our farm every year, and they inspect our chicken coops, our farm, our barns, our water, everything. It’s a big process,” he says.

Bhinderwala’s entrepreneurial journey began when she started making soaps in 1998 with a group of friends and was encouraged by her sister to continue making them. She eventually marketed her brand and has had a great response ever since. “I’ve been selling at the Farmington Farmers Market for seven years, and it’s great to see my repeating customers say how much they enjoy the products,” says Zehra. Janice Maksimovski specializes in Polish baked goods, cakes, and other sweets, and operates her bakery in Detroit. The items for sale are always made the night before so that patrons can count on fresh, flavorful sweets from her stand. “Our popular items are everything pumpkin, poppyseed and also our Chrusciki (angel wings),” Janice says. “We are a regular bakery with everything in it, and we specialize in cakes.”

ROSE BEST LLC Zehra Bhinderwala from Farmington Hills, sells all natural soap products as well as natural body butter, foot scrubs, lip balms and relaxing eye masks. Some of the ingredients in her products are cocoa butter, avocado oil, beeswax, and other naturals.

CHEESECAKE ETCETERA Plymouth resident Michael Bradford has been selling savory and sweet cheesecakes at the Market for six years and says it has been a great business. “It’s great because it’s a low startup cost so that you can test your idea,” Bradford says. “It’s not much to lose if it doesn’t work out. Also, the Farmington Market is very well run and has a nice variety of vendors. Some farmers markets are like a craft show, but this is more focused on

Home Made Ice Cream

Treating Ourselves to Happiness

With Milk Variations

By Chef Deborah Lieder June brings consistent warmth, a bright sun, and feelings of invigoration to enjoy each moment of our day. We appreciate the heat because of the length of time we spend in the cold. And somewhere inside of us is that feeling that we can do anything, be anything. The pursuit of happiness and joy fills our hearts as we commune with family and friends through backyard bbq’s, vacations and impromptu gatherings. Yet when all that is removed, we are challenged to find the same joy and happiness within ourselves. This often comes from the way that we love and nurture our body, mind, and soul. The summer months bring a bounty of fresh produce and our cravings tend to fair on the lighter side, as we no longer need those hearty meals to keep warm. We may even indulge in the cooling summer treats like ice cream or milkshake, knowing it balances out with the abundance of veggies we consume. Part of the beauty of food is having fun treats that make life a little more sweet. It brings joy to our heart and belly! Whether cow’s milk or plant-based milk is in your diet, both have a variety of nutrients that make our indulgence a little more justifiable. Cow’s milk has loads of vitamin D and calcium, contributing to the upkeep of our bones and teeth. It can be an anti-inflammatory, aid in heart health, promote growth and development, and boost immunity. And it makes delightful desserts. Not everyone’s body agrees with cow’s milk, however, and that’s where it requires us to be mindful of what our body is telling us. Thankfully, milk alternatives are quite accessible today and quiet easy to make at home. Nut milks contribute to aweight loss, add protein to our diet, improves our vision, and beautifies our skin. Coconut milk is a powerhouse, being an excellent hydrator, packed with electrolytes, healthy fats and is generally allergen friendly. Grain milks, such as rice milk, reduce cholesterol, help with our digestion, and improves our bone density. So no matter where we fair on the spectrum, we can enjoy those bites of ice cream while receiving the nutritional benefits of our chosen milk. It is an expression to give ourselves a little love, not only by being aware of what works for us but also rewarding ourselves for the beautiful person we are, with a little delicacy.

Cow’s Milk - Vanilla Bean 1 c. Organic whole milk 1/2 t. Salt 3/4 c. Organic sugar 1 ea. Vanilla bean, split lengthwise 2 c. Organic heavy cream 5 ea. Organic egg yolks 1 t. vanilla extract Directions: In a small saucepan, combine the milk, salt, and sugar. Scrape the seeds from the vanilla bean, adding both the pod and seeds to the pan. Slowly heat the milk until the sugar dissolves, cover and remove from heat, allowing the vanilla bean to infuse into the mixture. In two separate bowls, place egg yolks in one and heavy cream in the other. Remove the vanilla bean from milk mixture and rewarm over low heat. Temper milk (pouring small amounts while whisking at the same time) into egg yolks. Pour back into pan and place on the stove, over low heat until custard thickens. Make sure to stir consistently so the custard does not scorch. (Heat resistant spatula is ideal). Once the custard is thick, strain into heavy cream, whisking to incorporate. Chill for 4-6 hours or overnight. Churn the mixture according to your ice cream makers instructions. *Plant milks may be used in the same way, creating a soft texture and will thicken just like a milk-based custard.

Plant-Based Milk Chocolate, vegan 1- 14 oz. can Coconut milk, full fat 1 c. Coconut Cream (or other milk of choice) 1/2 t. Xanthan Gum 2/3 c. Cocoa Powder 1 t. Vanilla extract 1/3 c. Sugar - maple syrup, honey, agave, or granular (but must be ground fine in spice mill) Directions: Place all ingredients in a blender. Cover and chill for a few hours. Pour into ice cream maker and churn. Or if you do not own one, place in freezer safe container and stir every couple hours. You may also allow the mixture to freeze, then break it up into chunks, and blend in a food processor. This will make the consistency smoother. Once finished, the longer it is in the freezer, the more it will harden. If you’re planning to enjoy, pull out about a half an hour beforehand to soften. Mix-in ingredient options: Get Creative!! Candied nuts, salted caramel, fruit, fruit puree, brownies, cookies, toasted coconut, chocolate chips, fresh herbs like mint or basil. *note: it is ideal to have an ice cream maker, but not necessary, especially for the plant-based milks.

I Want to Live to 95! How About You? By Faith Brower It is about Attitude and Choices: Harriett Thompson, at 92 years old, was the oldest woman to finish a marathon! She finished the Rock ’n Roll Marathon in San Diego in just over seven hours and twenty minutes. Harriet is the perfect example of how to be and feel young despite age. How did she accomplish this amazing goal? Well, I think I may have some ideas: 1. Harriett surprised herself, and possibly others, with her unique vision of her future. She created it and then acted it out! She thought out of the box and lived the life SHE WANTED. She BELIEVED she was physically and mentally prepared to meet her goal. 2. Harriett was physically up to the challenge. She was able to walk, to stretch, and she trained or practiced. When I have researched how to be flexible and have good bone density into our 90’s, I have read that good posture and a brisk 30-minute walk daily builds the bone density and balance reflexes that reduce the impact of falls and injuries in later years. Plus walking, especially in the sunlight with vitamin D benefits, clears the mind of so much clutter. This activity can increase creativity and reduce stress and even depression -- the all-time burdens and downers!

Walking, talking, or being still, in nature or even walking in a busy town, encourages us to breathe, notice animals and nature’s changes, as well as allows us to move our magnificent muscles. Living longer involves using our gift of imagination and power to know we can accomplish goals, feeling joy in our accomplishments, getting rid of negative thinking, and using our bodies to build muscles and enhance our balance. And why not encourage others to begin now, and you begin where you are at now? It is not rocket science to feel young and capable. It is about enjoying ALL stages of life and building a vision with love, patience, perseverance, and believing it is possible.

An important part of the CranioSacral System is the connective tissue.

What’s in a Name? by Christopher Turkaly

The connective tissue is a 3-dimensional web throughout the body, from deep to superficial. It is continuous from the top of the head to the soles of the feet. It surrounds muscles, organs, bones, nerves, blood vessels, et al.

Our names don’t say anything about who we are as individuals – nothing about our interests, our personality, or our values. To make an assumption about someone based upon their name would be the same as judging a book by its cover.

An easy way to visualize the CranioSacral System and understand its significance is to imagine a balloon.

Yet for the type of bodywork in which I specialize, this seems to be the case. CranioSacral Therapy is a type of manual therapy in which I facilitate the patient’s body’s ability to self-heal.

The balloon would be the covering. Inside is the fluid, brain and spinal cord. Outside is the head, spine, tailbone, and the connective tissue.

Yet the name, CranioSacral Therapy, leads to much confusion and doesn’t explain anything about this amazing treatment that taps into and encourages the body’s natural healing processes.

Due to its location deep inside the body, the CranioSacral System is intimately related to the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, endocrine system, respiratory system, vascular system, and lymphatic system.

CranioSacral Therapy is therapy for the CranioSacral System. Yet to most people, this has no significance. They hear the word “cranio” and think that CranioSacral Therapy is about massaging the head, when in fact it is so much more than that. A better explanation of CranioSacral Therapy is that it is a type of manual therapy in which the therapist uses his/her hands to assess the patient’s soft tissues throughout the ENTIRE physical body. The focus is to locate restrictions which may be causing symptoms or dysfunction within ANY physiological system. The therapist uses lighttouch techniques in the area of the restriction with the goal of facilitating the body’s self-correcting mechanisms.

Any type of restriction within any of these systems can cause the CranioSacral System to be misshapen. Connective tissue will transmit this tension pattern from its origin through the connective tissue to the covering of the brain and spinal cord.

CranioSacral Therapy was developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger, as a result of research, he completed in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s while a professor in the medical school at Michigan State University. Dr. Upledger named his modality CranioSacral Therapy and set out to teach these techniques to more than just physicians.

This, in turn, will then affect the functioning of the brain and spinal cord and may lead to dysfunction anywhere throughout the body.

He named it CranioSacral Therapy because he believed that the CranioSacral system is a significant physiological system and should have its own unique classification, just like the cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system, digestive system, et al.

Since the connective tissue is an important part of the CranioSacral System, the connective tissue is what the therapist focuses on in a treatment session.

The CranioSacral System consists of the: •

tissues covering the brain and spinal cord,

cavities created by the tissues,

bones connected to these tissues (i.e.., head, spine, tailbone),

fluid within these tissues,

and connective tissue that attaches to any of the above and weaves itself throughout the body all the way to the skin.

Because of their extensive training, a CranioSacral therapist is able to: •

palpate the connective tissue,

For some reason when anyone learns about the CranioSacral System all they focus on is the spinal fluid and the cranium. They tend to think that CranioSacral Therapy is about regulating the fluid around the brain or about “opening” the bones of the head.

perceive its relationship to physical structures, such as muscles, bones, nerves, organs, and

CranioSacral Therapy is manual therapy. Manual therapy is any type of hands-on technique to improve movement in joints, muscles, and connective tissues. And remember that it can be performed anywhere on the body, not just the head!

note the exact location of restrictions – from superficial to deep inside the body.

During a treatment, the therapist

locates the source of symptoms in order to treat the underlying cause. The body always strives for homeostasis, which is a relatively stable balance. Whatever happens to our bodies and in our daily lives, the body works hard to stay in this equilibrium. After an injury, the body may detour resources to maintain stability. Eventually, the body may not be able to deal with the imbalance created by the injury and this can lead to a pain cycle and even chronic pain. This is called compensation because the body is having to work around not having all available resources. A CranioSacral Therapist is trained to assist the body in self-correcting this compensation and achieving harmony. Also, the therapist assists the nervous system in achieving a balanced state. Sometimes after an injury has occurred and healed, a specific spinal cord segment can continue sending pain signals. A CranioSacral Therapist is trained to locate and treat these hyperirritable segments. Furthermore, the therapist treats form and function. A lot of CranioSacral Therapy techniques/ protocols focus on treating the physical structure as well as its physiological process in order to ensure that the body returns to optimal performance. CranioSacral Therapy is the name of a manual therapy technique that utilizes the connective tissue to affect changes in the structure and function of the nervous system, muscular system, endocrine system, lymphatic system, and vascular system. To categorize it by its name would be pointless when it is so much more than working with the head (Cranium) or tailbone (Sacrum). It is an all over treatment modality that can be used to treat a variety of health conditions.

Christopher Turkaly, MEd, LMT, CST-T is an advanced CranioSacral Therapist who currently works for Beaumont Health Integrative Medicine Department and leads a CranioSacral Therapy study group in Oakland County. He enjoys helping others learn this powerful and simple technique that improve a variety of conditions.
