publisher's note What a wild ride we have all been on! Every single one of us has been affected by this virus in one way or another. For those who have lost their jobs or become sick, my heart goes out to you and your family. To the doctors, nurses, first responders, grocery store workers, truck drivers, restaurant workers, delivery people and all essential workers, THANK YOU! As social distancing began keeping people at home and our local businesses began feeling the effects, I knew that this April issue needed to focus not just on one of those businesses, but on all of them. I wanted to remind the readers of BBM of the importance of supporting the businesses that make Boerne what it is. I wanted to show the faces that make up those businesses! I reached out to as many as I knew how to get a hold of and got an overwhelming response. I think it is a great reminder that it isn’t just a business that is being affected, it’s our friends, our families and our neighbors. Let’s
join together as a community and support them not only now, but year round. These businesses and these people make Boerne what it is! Another challenge that presented itself as a result of social distancing was magazine distribution. People wouldn’t be out and about to pick up this April issue! What’s the best way to get these magazines into the hands of our readers? Solution: Encourage people to pick them up at our key distribution points around town by offering a fun “golden ticket” hunt! Read more about this below! We will also be delivering many of the magazines to select local neighborhoods to make it easier for people to get their hands on them! And of course, Boerne Business Monthly is always available to read online. As we all adjust to this temporary new way of life, I pray that we use this time to reflect on the things that are important, count our blessings and stay healthy.

Don’t let turbulence distract you:
I
KEEP YOUR FOCUS ON THE LONG-TERM by Matt Nelson – Managing Director, San Antonio Market, Prime Capital Investment Advisors
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “remove your emotions from investing.” In the turbulent times that we are in right now, that is easier said than done. It does not matter if you own real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds or private companies/equities. You’ve probably also heard that we have never seen anything like this before, this time is different. That statement is true, but not so true. While it may be a different headline, statistically speaking we have seen a market/economic behavior similar to this before and likely will continue to see it in the future. History does not predict the future. However, this is not uncommon; it is how you react that will determine what your financial situation looks like long-term.
Past Major Downturns and Headlines
In the past 20 years, we have lived through two major downturns in the market and economy that many thought we would not ever recover from. We had the tech bust or dot com bubble and 9/11 in the early 2000’s... Then, we had the global financial crisis in 2008-2009. But did we recover from these major events and have the longest bull market in the history of the stock market and have a robust economy with low unemployment? We did.
Market Volatility – Sticking to your plan
The last 31 years have provided an average intra-year drop of -13.5%, yet annual total returns were positive 25 of those 31 years (80% of the time).1 “Timing the Market” typically makes recovery harder – if not impossible. Over the past 20 years, the best 10 days in the market have been essential to growth. Seven of those 10 days occurred within two weeks of the 10 worst days.1 While periods of sharp selling and investor angst is hard to stomach and causing further anxiety, we urge investors to keep a
8
B oerne B usiness M onthly | April 2020
long-term perspective and avoid panic selling; only exacerbating the sell-off and potentially causing more harm to long-term investment objectives by missing a potential rebound in global markets.
Having a Financial Plan can Create Calmness
Whether you own a business, work for a small business, work for a Fortune 500 company or are retired, we feel it is imperative to have a financial plan in place. Even though it is tough to do, removing emotions from the decision-making process and to striving to not make rational decisions may dramatically impact your long-term financial plan. Having a financial plan in place and sticking to it can create calmness during volatility and times of uncertainty. Looking back historically and building the historic data into your financial plan can give you the sanity and peace of mind you may need. If you already have a plan in place, stay committed to your financial plan and strategy. If you do not have a financial plan in place that is updated daily based on market fluctuations and real estate changes, business valuations, etc., we highly encourage you to take the time to work with an advisor and put one in place.
Why is Rebalancing so important during big market selloffs and gains?
Rebalancing your portfolio is very crucial during big market moves. Why? If you have a 60/40 allocation (60% equities / 40% fixed income), big market moves in either of these asset classes can dramatically change this allocation. If the 60% in equities (due to equity selloff) gets reduced to 45%-50%, when equities recover it typically takes longer to recover, as you did not have the same
percentage in equities as you did during the selloff. This may happen in a long bull market as well, where the equites percentage may get much higher than the desired 60%/40% allocation. Thus, you may have 70%-75% equities, thus much more aggressive than you intended to be. It is important to rebalance your portfolio constantly, especially when your portfolio has drifted away from your financial plan and desired allocation.
Are you Truly Diversified?
We find that so many people think they are diversified by owning stocks, bonds and mutual funds inside their portfolio and that is it. Unexpected risks like the COVID-19 virus outbreak are impossible to predict. However, it’s times like this that really highlight the value and benefits of a focus on true diversification and quality investments. In the past month, we have seen sharp declines across the board in stocks, bonds, REIT’s (Real Estate Investment Trusts), oil & gas and many other major asset classes. Now is a good time for everyone to complete an analysis to see if they are truly diversified into all asset classes and invested properly based upon their risk tolerance and objectives. Alternative Investments – These are asset classes that sometimes get overlooked to help diversify an overall portfolio. These may be worth exploring during volatile times in the stock and fixed income market. There are qualifications that need to be
met for some of these strategies.
Are you positioned for the future?
Nobody knows how long COVID-19 will affect our health and finances. We cannot predict the future. However, we can learn from the past. I am a firm believer that we will recover from this downturn and there will be many opportunities in the future. It is important to stick to your financial plan, don’t make irrational decisions, assess if you are truly diversified and invested going forward based upon your risk tolerance and objectives. If you would like to discuss any of these topics, please call our office at 830-816-5131. BBM Matt has been in the financial services industry for over two decades. Due to Matt’s tenure, he has a wealth of experience assisting high-net-worth individuals to work through a multitude of financial challenges to develop a holistic approach to wealth management and asset protection. The COVID-19 crisis has affected all of us in ways we never imagined. We are confined to our homes, working remotely, home schooling our children and doing our best to distance ourselves to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. However, this new way of life has hit our local small businesses particularly hard. The people on the following pages represent just a sampling of the many local small businesses that make Boerne what it is. As you look through the following pages, these pictures are a good reminder that these aren’t just businesses, but these are our friends, our families and our neighbors. Let’s do what we can to support them, not only now during this time of crisis, but year round.

Show Your Support for Our Local Small Businesses 1. Keep Dollars in the Local Economy
On average, money spent in locally owned businesses has three times the impact on our local community as dollars spent at national chains. When you choose to shop local, you are simultaneously helping to create jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, investing in community improvement and promoting community development.
2. Protect Boerne’s Character and Charm
People come from far and wide to experience the charm of our town. Boerne’s unique mix of local businesses is part of what makes our town so attractive. By supporting these independent, small businesses you are helping Boerne retain its distinctive local flavor.
3. Community Well-Being
Locally owned businesses help strengthen towns by sustaining communities, linking neighbors and contributing more to local

causes and charities. Additionally, local ownership means that important decisions are made by people who live and work in our community, and by those who will be affected by the impacts of those decisions.
4. Customer Appreciation & Personalized Service
Small business owners value your business. Local shops survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you are likely to get a higher standard of service and customer care. Having the owner close by also means that they often personally know their customers and cater to their needs.
5. Product Diversity
Have you shopped Boerne lately? Our town has some pretty cool stores! Small businesses sell products based upon their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantying a much broader range of products and services.

Immune Support
E
Nothing New for Healthy Living by Dr. Leigh Ann Greenberg
Every flu season, I write an article about boosting your immune system to stay healthy and to fight off the common cold and flu. Looking back at these archived articles, I realize my advice hasn’t changed. People are just now starting to listen. Supporting your immune system year-round will obviously have a better effect for when you need it: like during a COVID19 Pandemic. Most people are now aware of increasing consumption of vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D and vitamin A to help boost the immune system. It is also very important to have a healthy gut. Almost 70-80% of our immunity lies within our gastrointestinal tract; therefore, a healthy gut can be a first line defense for viruses and bacteria. Your diet is extremely important in supporting a healthy gut. Low carbohydrate and low sugar diets rich in raw fruits and vegetables are healthier for your immunity. Probiotics, such as FloraBalance and Endomune, serve an important role in maintaining healthy gut flora to combat viruses and bacteria that are introduced to the gastrointestinal tract. Decreasing the ingestion of foods that cause inflammation can assist as well. Annie’s Apothecary can ship the Food Sensitivity Test to your home to determine what those foods are. Our pharmacist can then make personalized recommendations based on your results. Another way to boost immunity is by oral supplementation of immunoglobulins. The basic functions of immunoglobulins are to neutralize and mark bacteria and viruses for destruction by the body’s immune system. Unlike antibiotics, they allow the immune system to differentiate between pathogens (bacte-
18
B oerne B usiness M onthly | April 2020
ria and viruses) and the body’s normal flora. Each day the GI tract immune cells produce about 5 grams of immunoglobulins. However, during times of stress there is a significant reduction in production. I think we can safely say EVERYONE is under a certain amount of stress right now. Immunoglobulins taken orally act first in the intestinal tract to eliminate or inhibit the growth of disease-causing organisms and toxins. Supplementation with immunoglobulins reduces the demand in the gut for naturally produced antibodies. Since the body’s resources are not infinite, conservation of immune resources in the gut allows more resources to be available wherever else they may be needed. IG 26 Plus DF powder is an immunoglobulin product that may help your body defend itself from viruses. As we all get accustomed to social distancing and accept this new normal for the next month or so, please continue your healthy habits all year long. Annie’s Apothecary is committed to helping you achieve your goals and to keeping our vitamin stock up! BBM

We have taken precautionary measures with “showing” properties for sale, Realtors all working together to maximize safety using the CDC guidelines for coronavirus. We’ve not seen any recommendation to stop selling or buying property nor that it should come to a grinding halt if you are needing to purchase or sell a home. All of our showing agents are in line with the CDC guidelines. If a client reports having traveled within past 15 days or has symptoms, we wait. If a seller does not want showings, we wait. However, there are many steps that can be taken during that 15 day period, like processing a simple mortgage application, or verifying funds for a cash purchase, gathering multiple pictures/videos for a buyer to explore BEFORE actually stepping into a home. LAND properties are easiest right now and many of our clients are indeed looking “outside city limits” location for their next home, desiring some romp’n stomp’n space or areas for Big Boy Toys. Our realtors abide by a code of ethics already in place and have always taken the high road when showing properties, making sure to qualify clients beforehand to assure the most feasible match. We now specifically provide a package of wipes to use on door handles and rails and take the current CDC guidelines seriously. The agents use common sense and “purposeful” showing appointments. What I mean by that is that the agents provide multiple pictures and videos to buyer clients in order to explore homes BEFORE ever booking an appointment for an actual showing. We recommend limiting “guests” to just ONE per family for all first showings of any home and then only after discussing the pros/cons of pictures, videos, surveys, seller disclosures and perhaps more “agents on the ground research”. Once a client zeros in on a potential purchase, we set the appointment and make sure all safety measures are taken. It’s a Win-Win. We just all need to be cautious and respect today’s conditions and adjust accordingly.”

How to Make the Most of Working from Home
N
working remotely
During this challenging time, Akin, Doherty, Klein & Feuge, P.C. is here to do more than file tax returns.
Now that the coronavirus has more people than ever working from home, we thought we would share a few tips to help you stay focused and be productive! HAVE A DESIGNATED WORK SPACE You may not have the space in your home to designate an entire room to a home office, however it is important to find a spot where you do your work each day. Try to make this space feel as separate as possible. Not having a separate space dedicated to work activities makes is harder to separate your work from your personal time. The more these lines blur, the more your work/life balance will suffer. Even if you are working at a table in your home that is used for other purposes, like the kitchen table, make sure to pack up and put away your work at the end of each day so you can “leave” your workspace. GET DRESSED It may be tempting to stay in your pajamas all day, every day… but don’t! Getting up, getting dressed, fixing your hair, etc. are all signals to your brain that you are about to be productive. You don’t have to put on a suit and tie, but putting on clothing that you could leave your house in will help you to feel a bit more normal in this time of being cut off from the rest of the world. Besides, there is a good chance someone will see you, there are LOTS of video conferences happening these days! MAKE A SCHEDULE This is easier said than done, especially if you are at home with your spouse or children, but the more of a work schedule you are able to abide by, the more productive you will be! So decide when to start and end your workday, make lists of tasks to accomplish for each day, have a dedicated lunch time and schedule in some breaks. Share this schedule with your family so they know that just because you are working remotely doesn’t mean you are free all time. REACH OUT If working remotely is new for you, chances are it may be a bit of a transition. Staying connected to co-workers through phone calls emails, text messages and video conferences can help you avoid feeling isolated. Need help with something? Don’t hesitate to reach out to those that you normally would. BBM

A DOWN MARKET AIN’T ALL BAD.
W
by John D. Eadie – Founder and Managing Director, Covenant CPA, CFA, CFP®, PFS, CLU®, CIMA, CKA®
While the stock market and the global economy look like they are in for a bit of a rough ride, these conditions provide some wonderful opportunities to focus on other parts of your financial life. Depressed asset values and super low interest rates make for a prime time to take action that may supercharge your financial life when markets settle and turn around. The goal here is not to delve deep into the technical aspects of each of these planning ideas. The hope is you will consider how one or more of these may fit into your personal plan and then take action to make them come to life. Let’s start with the simple and move to the more complex. Portfolio Management: No one is enjoying what they see online or on their investment statements right now, but depressed stock values allow for some straightforward portfolio planning ideas. Simply selling investments that are at a loss and buying new and possibly similar investments may provide offsets to future gains. It’s a nice way to minimize tax liability and can also provide opportunity for more efficient rebalancing of your portfolio. Annual Gifts: If you are trying to reduce your estate or just want to provide others with a little extra cash flow each year, gifting stocks that are depressed in value may allow you to transfer more shares right now than you otherwise thought you could. Each year, anyone and everyone can gift up to $15,000 to anyone they like. In today’s market, a stock that might have been worth $15,000 two months ago is likely worth closer to $10,000 - $12,000 today, and that means you can transfer more shares to them. It’s an easy way to get more units of something to them with the hope that the value increases soon and they have more. Roth IRA Conversions: One of the more common tax planning ideas is to consider converting a portion of your traditional tax-deferred IRA to a Roth IRA. Doing so creates a tax liability on the portion of the IRA that is converted, but this can still be a great strategy if you happen to be going through a year where your income tax may be lower than normal. In other words, it’s a way to take advantage of the graduated tax brackets. With depressed asset values, your IRA may not look quite as healthy as it did just a few weeks ago. This may enhance the value of a Roth conversion in 2020. If conversion makes sense for you because of your tax position, then a conversion may allow you to acquire many more shares of stocks, mutual funds, or exchange traded funds post conversion, which can provide the potential for significantly more upside in the

Roth value going forward. Roth conversions do not only have to be accomplished with cash or money market assets. The benefit is enhanced further by the fact that the Roth, if planned well, can make distributions tax free. Grantor Retained Annuity Trust: This one moves more into the sophisticated arena of wealth transfer planning and is primarily most impactful if you have a balance sheet that is larger than the current lifetime estate and gift exemption. If you do, now is an optimal time for the strategy – depressed asset values and super low interest rates. The basic concept is that a donor transfers cash or property to a trust in exchange for an annuity which is payable for a fixed term of years. At the end of the annuity period, any assets remaining in the trust transfer to the trust beneficiaries at no gift tax cost. In super simple terms, the donor receives back the original amount given plus interest. The interest rate required on the annuity is set by the IRS, and today, is near all-time lows. That means that if the property contributed appreciates at a rate greater than the required interest rate, significant wealth can be passed on to others at no gift tax cost. The strategy can potentially be enhanced further with the use of discounting techniques. The strategy requires help from your advisor and attorney, but it can be one of the most impactful and less risky wealth transfer techniques out there. Today’s market environment simply makes it even better. Philanthropic Planning: In general, most people think of appreciated assets as being the best assets to give to charity because they can meet their philanthropic goals and avoid paying tax on the gains that have occurred in the asset. That is true, but this market can also provide opportunity for your charitable giving. These extremely low interest rates can make planning ideas like charitable lead trusts very attractive. In short, the charitable lead trust provides a way to make your desired annual charitable gifts while potentially transferring wealth to the next generation at little or no gift tax cost. Sale to Defective Grantor Trust: Now that’s a mouthful. This strategy is similar to the grantor retained annuity trust with a couple of prominent exceptions. While the grantor retained annuity trust’s tax treatment is certain, this strategy is a little more uncertain in the eyes of the IRS. The defective grantor trust also creates a taxable gift upon execution, but there may not be a tax payment due if you still have remaining lifetime
estate and gift tax exclusion. A big benefit that defective trust has over the grantor retained annuity trust is that it allows for generation skipping tax planning, which can add significant benefit to the strategy. The primary goal of the defective trust, like the grantor retained annuity trust, is to freeze the value of an asset transfer at today’s value with the expectation that that value increases greatly over the term of the trust. To wrap up, these markets have been crazy, and the Coronavirus will have an impact on the global economy, but we cannot stop planning. These are just a few ideas that work well when asset values are depressed, and interest rates are low. Talk to your advisor and take advantage of them while you can.BBM John is the founder and a managing director of Covenant. f. You feel as if your knee might give out when you try to walk TREATMENT OF KNEE DISORDERS The course of treatment for knee problems depends upon its source. Is the source obvious, like a sports injury, or is it something more difficult to see — if at all — such as the development of osteoarthritis? A qualified orthopedic specialist can diagnose your specific knee ailment by taking a medical history, performing a physical exam and ordering tests to pinpoint the exact cause of your pain. Then, the doctor will be able to put together the best course of action for you. Regarding knee pain, Dr. Alexandra Matthews, Sports Medicine Specialist for the Orthopedic Performance Institute says, "I encourage my patients to never suffer in silence! There have been numerous advancements in the treatment of knee pain, and many ways to treat pain without surgery are available. Two of the latest options include peripheral nerve stimulation- where you use a small simulator to keep the nerve from firing in pain, and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections- where you use your own blood to heal your knee pain."
