President's Note

“Hello there!”

It's crazy how time is passing by so quickly. I can't believe that my term as president is coming to an end, and I'm not so sure if I can let go of such an amazing club full of amazing people. You've all inspired me to be a better leader and most of all, to be a better person. Thank you, Key Club, for an indescribable experience, and thank you, Key Club members, for making the experience even better. I love you all, and I'll save all of the cheesiness for banquet. I hope you continue serving passionately and continue caring for others, like you always do, and don't forget to stay true to yourself. I love you, and for the last time, otter out.

v

Sincerely,

Jenny Nguyen, President '14-'15

Editor's Note

“Dear my lovely ottadors,” Wow, my term is officially coming to an end. DCON is quickly approaching which means a new term is about to begin. As sad as I already am, I know my Tech Editor elect, Khanh Tran, will do a great job as your new Tech Editor. It's been an amazing journey. I truly enjoyed creating monthly newsletters and reading your exciting articles. Hear more about my sadness at banquet which will take place some time in April! Enough of me, this month was pretty pact with some fun events such as Surf City, LEC, usual K-Kids, Valentine's Day WADY, and the most popular event for the month of February, Race on the Base. Since my term is coming to an end and I will no longer be able to read your silly articles anymore, it would be nice if you guys write me a few about the 2014-2015 term! Email the articles to me at

Sincerely,

munchingarticlemachine@gmail.com Vyvien Pham, Tech Editor '14-'15

WADY And Valentine's Day Party

v

JULIE TRAN Senior Last Saturday was my first time attending a WADY event. At the event I did not understand what this service was, but it was mentioned in meetings and by other members frequently. I heard from my fellow key clubbers that it is a memorable experience. Putting that into consideration, on Saturday I attended my first WADY event. In my opinion it did live up to the expectations. I certainly enjoyed the festivities going on. I liked how it was a small service so people were not scattered everywhere and difficult to find. What I enjoyed most about WADY was how I met the most genuine, inspiring, and insightful people. At the event, it was very quick of me to feel comfortable around people. I got the chance to bond with members in Key Club and I met a very kind old man whom shared his life story with us. He told us stories about how he has a lot of grand kids and how they grew up to become very successful. He also advised us that, it is possible for us to be successful no matter what we choose to do in life. He encouraged us by telling us that no matter what college or what we do in life we will thrive successfully. Overall, I had a great time at this event with my fellow key clubbers.

TET FESTIVAL OC Fair Grounds

GIANHU NGUYEN Junior

Tet festival is one of the services that I look forward to most throughout the year, since the event provides a high amount of hours for the volunteers, and I really enjoy wearing the traditional outfits of the Vietnamese people. It brings me back to the years that I have lived in Vietnam, and the way how they decorated the place was very nice and realistic. Despite the Tet festival’s location at the OC Fair Event Center in Costa Mesa and a few droplets and drizzle of rain, many individuals gathered together to celebrate and honor the Lunar New Year. In comparison to previous years, the set-up for this year’s Lang Viet Nam is the most realistic one in my opinion. After arriving for my shift, I got dressed as a village peasant. As I was doing what I was told by the event coordinator, many people wanted to take pictures. A lot of the elders told me how it reminded them of the society and environment that they lived in, how the food and outfits and everything was realistic. Throughout the middle of my shift, raindrops started to fall and in order to preserve the condition of the outfits, all of the volunteers were asked to come back inside and change out. Even though it was pretty chaotic inside the dressing tent, I was able to snap some pictures with my friends as memories.

Race on the base JOANN VUONG Junior On Saturday, February 28th, 2015, I attended an annual event named “Race on the Base,” which was a running event that took place on the Los Alamitos Military Base; hence, it is named “Race on the Base.” At this event, the thirty of us were split into smaller groups of three or four to accommodate the needs of the event coordinators and to work different areas of the vastly large running course. This year, I worked near the finish line to help “Gemini Timing,” a company that took care of the digital clock. As runners were approaching and crossing the finish line, the camera operated by Gemini Timing recorded the bib number, name, age, and sex of the runner; however, not everyone was recorded. In that case, my partner, Norman Nguyen, and I had to check a screen on the laptop to see which runners had missing information, write down his or her bib number, and chase after him or her to obtain that information. Since the runners had just finished their 5K marathon and for some, 10K marathon, they were out of breath; and the fact that I had to stop and ask them for this information and they responded with gasps for air in between their answers, made me feel sorry for pestering them. After we finished our task, I regrouped with my friends Darcy Capistrano, Jennifer Hoang, and Duy Tran to get food which was provided by Denny’s and take goofy pictures in the photo booth inside “The Expo.” Overall, it was a neat experience, although I have been familiar with this event for the past three years; It never seems to bore me!
