President's Note

“Hello Ottadors!”

How have you been? I hope the first semester treated you well! I know that January has been sort of a slow month, but that's only because we're in a transitioning period to the 2015-2016 term. Soon, we'll get back to our busy routines and continue serving the community. Honestly, I am still in disbelief that the elects are already chosen, and soon, they will lead the club to even greater heights. Even though my term is ending soon, I will continue to try my best to serve you! I have one month left, but I will try to make it the best month that it could be. This president is not going to let you down! I hope you have a wonderful day with your loved ones, and I will see you soon! L-O-V-E I LOVE BGKC! ♥

v

Sincerely,

Jenny Nguyen, President '14-'15

Editor's Note

“What's Cooking?!” I know what's cooking... Tacos from Movie Night! BGKC's very own Movie Night fundraiser turned out to be a success. If you were not able to make it, then you missed out! But no worries, flip to page 7 to see how it went. I can not believe it is already February! The month of January was pretty hectic with DCON payments being due, DCON awards submission deadlines, and the new executive board election. The end of my term is approaching quickly and I do not want it to end! I realized that with my term ending soon, my high school Key Club experience is also coming to an end. I've attended many exciting events and met so many new people. How was your Key Club experience for the year of 2014-2015? Oh I know! Write it all down in an article for me, just email it to:

Sincerely,

munchingarticlemachine@gmail.com Stay otterific my Ottadors! See you soon!

Vyvien Pham, Tech Editor '14-'15

PAST EVENTS Lincoln Educational Center DUYEN DIEP SENIOR I attended LEC on Thursday, January 15, 2015 (my first event of the year) with Robert Ramirez, Bao Van Le, Truman Nguyen, and Katie Pham. I attended it an hour earlier to get more hours. I graded several packets and then the others arrived. They told me how they got a ride to LEC from a stranger in a white van and how the boys were stuffed in the trunk while the girls were sitting in the front with the stranger. I criticized Robert for allowing this to happen (liability issues). He showed me the videos he took during the ride and I laughed at their reactions. After endless packets of grading, Robert Ramirez and Truman Nguyen broke down in tears. It's been a while since they had sweat in their eyes. We took a break from grading and talked amongst ourselves. For some reason, Bao Van kept tripping and we all laughed at her. Then, Truman began talking about Legend of Korra and narrated: "It all started when the fire nation attacked." We all laughed as he made the story into the our LEC version. I enjoyed this LEC as I got to know these freshmen and had numerous laughs while we graded the endless packets.

K-Kids ETHAN NGUYEN SENIOR A couple of weeks ago, I had a good project idea for the K-Kids at Cook Elementary. I believed that they would be interested in partaking in a recycling project, where the students would raise awareness for being environmentally friendly. To fully carry out our plan, we first had to educate the students about recycling. With that in mind, I created a couple of posters with the K-Kids that encouraged the grade-schoolers to recycle. These posters were basically made by the kids themselves. They drew the first things that came to mind whenever the word “recycle” was mentioned. Their illustrations were extremely imaginative and creative, as I did not see drawing that was repeated. After we completed the posters, we presented them to the faculty. They provided positive feedback and we hung up the posters around school. On top of this, I also ordered a couple of recycling bins that were to be placed around Cook Elementary for the students to use. I’m rather excited for this project to follow though, as it is my first project as K-Kids Coordinator. The only thing I fear is that the K-Kids will lose interest in the recycling project, though it’s something that I’d rather not think about.

WADY BAOVAN LE Freshman On January 10th, 2015, I signed up to go to WADY. It was my second time going to this event. This was the only event I could have signed up for because the other events on the same day started around the time my Viet class starts. I thought that there would be one or two freshmen that will sign up for this event, however I was the only freshmen who signed up. At first, I was a bit nervous going with the upperclassmen, but it wasn't that bad at all. I befriended Duy, who was really nice to me. Everyone were in big groups, while it was just Duy and I. We decided to work together and deliver food on the second floor. The second floor is my favorite floor to work on, to be honest. I have met the same friendly Korean ladies from the last time I worked on that floor. I personally love watching Korean dramas, so I'm a bit used to the language. I tried talking to the ladies, and they were surprised that I spoke Korean with them. I have a very soft spot for old people, so talking to them really warms up my heart. One of the ladies, however, told me that she was supposed to received a box of food. I made an effort and took numerous trips between the first and second floors. It turns out that she was not in the program. I could see the disappointment in her eyes, but I couldn't do anything. I suggested her to ask to be in the program though. Duy and I were the first ones to finish delivering the boxes. A few moments later, everyone else joined us on the first floor. A few upperclassmen received fruits, red ginseng candies, and home-made jello. They were kind enough to share some with me. I think everyone had a great time. We shared laughs, especially when Quinton used the elevator to scare some of the members. It was really funny, and memorable. I really do love going to WADY. WADY had helped me interact with the other members, and befriend them. Even though I was nervous at first, WADY made me realized that I shouldn't be hiding in my little bubble and to socialize more. I enjoy going to WADY, and hopefully my schedule will not be a conflict for the next WADY event.

CONCLAVE

ANDREW NGUYEN Senior It was my first time ever attending a conclave and I had no idea what was ahead. After some long waiting, everyone filled a lecture hall. Conclave began with the explanation of how the Lieutenant Governors would be elected which would be a caucus. Multiple candidates from many schools were running for LTG for their respective positions and as a result, each candidate had to give a timed speech. After each speech, the attendees of the caucus would ask the candidate questions whether they be about future plans they have or solutions to existing problems. One of these candidates was our own Brian Chau! Though he did his best in answering any questions Key Club members had, he was unfortunately out from the final round. By the final round, there was only Tommy Thach and Terry Nguyen. Also, this is when I found out that members other than delegates can ask questions and that is when I started brainstorming difficult ones. I was able to ask Terry a question, but time ran out before she could answer. Eventually, the final round of questioning ended and Terry Nguyen was announced as Division 4 North’s new LTG. Although we had many good candidates, I strongly believe that she will do a great job as LTG which was evident with her well-thought-out answers and her confident speech. Conclave was an amazing an experience and I know that the future of our Division is in more-than-capable hands.

Movie night BGKC Fundraiser

JOANN VUONG Junior Lights, camera, action! On Friday, January 16th 2015, Bolsa Grande Key Club hosted its very own Movie Night! Weeks prior to the fundraiser, we planned out everything very accordingly and to our surprise, the night was executed quite successfully! The movie that we decided to show in the warm and inviting cafeteria was “Rise of the Guardians. To add on, admission was free of charge! To satisfy the hunger of teenagers, we sold freshly made carne asada tacos, cold drinks including water and soda, freshly popped buttery popcorn, and refreshing snow cones drowned in syrup. Occasionally, it was got very hectic and chaotic, but otherwise business ran smoothly! We attracted many customers by hollering across the quad and the aroma of our delicious foods appealed to the people that passed by. It was great that we opened up this fundraisers to everyone! We invited other people from different schools from the district to enjoy the day before our three day weekend! Though not a lot of people watched the movie inside the cozy cafeteria, our sales outside were going crazy. Luckily, I had my fellow officers to help me! This fundraiser was a splendid experience for us and we hope for it to be even more spectacular the next time!
