PRESIDENT’S FORWARD Mr. John McCormack
Members, on the milestone of our 90th Anniversary I am both fortunate and proud to be your President. I’m fortunate in that my position allows me to devote my time and energies to the association that has given me so many opportunities and rewards throughout my career and has allowed me to develop many life-long friendships. I’m proud that I can represent the association that has an abundant history of success stories both on and off the field, but at the same time exhibits strong ethical values, camaraderie, persistence, provides a sense of belonging, is culturally diverse and provides training, development and advancement to the top levels of our game. Also, the association is one that respects its fellow members regardless of race, age, colour or creed. We kicked off the season with a cocktail evening to celebrate our 90th Anniversary. A relaxed evening was enjoyed by all. This was followed by our Blue & White cabaret evening in June where Mario Cafarelli was re-presented with his Life Membership blazer for his continued service to our association over many years. Near the end of the season, at one of our general meetings, we had a series of photos taken to capture the membership in their various roles for the annals. In season 2011 we implemented our new and more powerful communication equipment. Each of our top 20 referees was issued with their own radio, communications cable and back pack. By all reports the Comms gear is significantly better that the older equipment which has served us well over the past 10 years. The Committee agreed to donate the old communications equipment to Group 11 referees which is located in the far west of NSW. The equipment was gratefully received and will be a huge boost to referees in that area. We saw the continuation of the ICCC competition for senior football expanded to include u15 – A grade run in conjunction with South Sydney, St. George and Balmain districts. Canterbury Junior League provided the majority of the teams in most grades with Canterbury averaging over 40% of all teams from u15 – A grade. This has given our members the opportunity to referee a diverse range of teams and 3
thereby develop their skills, in particular their control skills as they encounter players they have not refereed before. We were very fortunate that our referees were able to officiate in a number of grand finals in u15d2, u15d3, u17d1, u19d1 and A grade competitions where referees in the other associations did not have this opportunity. We must be aware though that pressure will be applied to share these appointments among the other associations. Our Committee will ensure we continue to be able to referee the best games available. Congratulations to Kevin Shanahan and the Junior League Board for a successful season and we look forward to maintaining an open dialogue on all issues pertinent to our game. Season 2011 opened with a number of vacant positions on the Executive with the retirement of Mario Cafarelli as Hon. Secretary, Warren Gee as Assistant Secretary and Chris Cafarelli as Vice President. We were fortunate in that David Abood was re-elected as our Vice President after deciding not to contest the position in 2010. David’s experience has been invaluable on the Executive. George Elias was elected to the role of Hon. Secretary. While this position is a daunting role George has stepped into it with fervour as he has done his whole career in whatever task he is assigned. You cannot under estimate George’s resolve to the association and I’m sure he will continue to grow as a dedicated Secretary in the years ahead. Robert Dubois filled the shoes of Assistant Secretary and brought to the front table enhanced IT Skills and ensured that our website was maintained and informative to the members with quick news items, photos and the availability of the general meeting minutes. Congratulations to our active members for their on-field achievements in 2011. In particular I would like to congratulate John Maarbani for achieving the association’s highest honour of the Clubb-Johnson trophy. John’s year long performance culminated in him refereeing the A grade Grand Final which is a testament to his perseverance over many years. There have been many disappointments and knock downs and at times he considered retirement, but he continued to get back up again and keep going. John had a 100% attendance at training and led by example. Even as an A grade referee he kept on asking questions of his peers and mentors to make each game as near perfect as possible. This is a shining example to every referee wanting to improve his or her game. Congratulations also to Phelix El-Kek for being awarded the Farrelly – Dick trophy by the Directors of Referees for being the most improved referee in 2011. Our Graded referees were again well represented with their appointments this year. David Abood reached the Graded 250 game milestone during the season and was appointed to the finals of the NRL, Adam Gee made his debut in the NRL as a centre referee during the season and was appointed as stand-by referee to the Toyota Cup Grand Final. Most pleasing was the fact that a number of our referees went to Adam’s game to provide moral support and it shows the bond many referees share. Richard Daizli was again appointed to a Graded Grand Final in the NSW Cup with Jim Oliveira as the In-Goal Judge and Matt Damaso was appointed Touch Judge to the Grand Final of the Bundaberg Cup Grand Final. 4
For many years (17) Barry Ruttle has worked tirelessly as the NRAS Coordinator and continued to referee and mentor referees every Saturday in mini / mod games as well as being on the Advisory Board panel. As NRAS Coordinator I’m sure he felt he was pushing against the tide of public opinion to keep our junior game the same as it has been for many years, but we needed to make our game safer for children and Barry’s efforts has been a significant contribution to the changes we have started to embrace. For his persistent efforts and active involvement in the association Barry is a very worthy winner of the Leo Randle award for 2011. For over 15 years we have been involved in exchange programs with referee associations outside the metropolitan area and this year John Gerges and Gavin Beecroft represented the association in Perth along with Phelix El-Kek and Barry Belford who travelled north to the Sunshine Coast. Jo Makdessi, a former member of Canterbury, was WARLRA’s representative visiting our association from Perth. This program is important to the development of our members and is a sought after appointment each year. Congratulations to the members who represented our association with distinction. At the conclusion of the season I have been advised that Brad Zarb will not be seeking re-election after 4 years as our Treasurer and Robert Dubois will not recontesting the role of Assistant Secretary in 2012. I would like to extend my thanks to both gentlemen for giving of their time and commitment to the Committee. Brad has moved to the foot of the mountains and has increased his duties at work. The role of Treasurer is very important to the security of the association and Brad has continued the high integrity required of this role. I’m sure he will remain a committed member and will contribute with his valuable independent opinion. The Committee has worked hard to ensure we remain progressive in our thoughts and actions and have continued to look for new ideas and implement changes to maintain interest in the various facets of our association. David Abood and Adam Gee took on the role as Training Coordinators and with the use of guest NRL trainers the attendance has been the best it has been in years and I thank them for revamping the training program. Gavin Beecroft has been diligent in his role as Social Secretary with greater involvement in the golf day and the introduction of the indoor sports day for the active (and not so active) members held in October. All our social events went off without a hitch which is due to the planning and commitment of Gavin. Lionel Brown has been our Coaching Coordinator since May 1997 and with his Assistants continues to ensure the new referees are aware of and ready to take on the duties of a referee. This season saw a very pleasing number of over 11 new recruits pass through our coaching courses and we encourage them to take up the challenge again in 2012 to continue to learn the art of being a referee. My thanks also to Richard Daizli in his first successful year as Director of Referees with the support of Kim Archer and Matt Damaso in their roles as Assistant 5
Directors of Referees, Wayne Loveday as Development Officer and our representative at judiciary hearings, David Abood and Lionel Brown who conducted our “rulings” at our general meetings. Our sponsorship team of PerryTzamouranis, Shane Merry and Jim Oliveira continue to look for ways to take advantage of government grants and increase funding to our Association. We have been fortunate in receiving a grant of $10,000 to cover the costs of our new communications equipment and obtained over $8,400 in CDSE funding in November for the exchange program and the school training & recruitment program. Sponsorship is not only about increased funding for the association it is also about encouraging new referees to join an association that offers benefits to members that other associations may not be able to. New initiatives will be rolled out in season 2012. For the past 15 years we have been very fortunate to have the Canterbury League Club as our major sponsor. I would like to thank the Club’s Directors and staff for their rock solid support particularly through former Chairman Peter Winchester & CEO John Ballesty. This has continued with the support of Barry Ward, Director and Johnathon Brain, CEO over the past season. Along with the Bulldogs Football Club they have been very generous in approving the funding outlined above. Our other three sponsors - Ronnies Demolition & Excavation Services as our sleeve sponsor through Paul and Yvette Hassarati, NSW Harness Racing Club through the support of CEO Paul Dumesny our printing sponsor and Control Painting and Decorating through Nathan Hall, our short sponsor have been significant supporters of the association during the season and without them we would not be able to provide the training equipment, subsidized uniforms or put on the social events that we all enjoy. To Dennis Spagarino and the Board of the NSWRLRA I express my thanks for encouraging closer links with Head Body through regular attendances at our meetings and social events and providing those important cash grants devoted to the training and development of our members. I mentioned in my 2010 Forward of the struggle with illness some of our members were experiencing. Sadly, since our last general meeting Bob Styles, a Life Member and past President of 7 years, lost his long battle with cancer and passed away on 29th September. Bob refereed the A grade Grand Final in 1979 and again in 1983. Also, on the 3rd November Allan Aggett, 80, Life Member of Canterbury and Graded member passed away. Alan refereed the A grade grand final in 1961. Our condolences go to their families and we remember them in our thoughts and prays. Victor Pitt continues his long struggle with illness and is in a nursing home in Greenacre, we continue to hope that he remains as comfortable as possible at this sorrowful time.
6
Finally, I could not devote my time to the association if it was not for the love, support, thoughtfulness and encouragement of my wife Susan. A huge THANK YOU. I look forward to catching up with members, sponsors and guests at our AGM on the 16th February 2012.

HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT Mr. George Elias
Mr. Chairman and Members, During the 34 years that I have been a member of this Association, we have had only 5 previous Secretaries. In this my first year as Secretary, I can certainly appreciate all the hard work they, and all previous Secretaries have had to do. I have no doubt disappointed some members at times, but I can honestly say that I have always tried to do the right thing by the Association, the members, and Rugby League in general. The position is not made any easier if, like me, you are not up to speed on all the latest technology with computers & phones etc. I always thought that ‘back up” was something a player did to support the ball carrier and a ‘hard drive’ was what a pack of forwards did in trying to win a scrum and an ‘iphone’ was something my dear old mother would say in broken English when she wanted to make a phone call. But I now realize that they mean something completely different. The season started in early February with the traditional Cricket Day. This was very well attended, however like all social functions, we would like to see more members attend. Training started shortly thereafter, and before we knew it, it was March and members were polishing their whistles and cleaning their jock straps. for the trials It is important that active members commit themselves to the trials to help share the load. At the AGM on the 17 February, John McCormack was again elected President for his second term, and whilst we had no nominations for Secretary, the position was filled at the first General meeting held on 17 10
March. I would like to thank Mario Cafarelli for continuing in the role until the position was filled. Our first official function for the year was a Cocktail Party held at Canterbury League Club in early March to commemorate the 90th anniversary of our Association. Later in the year all active members were given a pair of referee socks, appropriately embroidered. Our Patrons for 2011 were once again Peter Winchester, Garry Hughes and Todd Greenberg. All three continue to give great support to our Association. David Abood was elected Vice President. Brad Zarb was again elected as Treasurer, and Gavin Beecroft again the Social Secretary. Robert Dubois was elected for the first time as Assistant Secretary. Lionel Brown & Adam Gee were again elected on the Committee. Former Secretary, Mario Cafarelli was re-presented with Life Membership at the annual Blue & White Cabaret Dinner in June. Mario’s outstanding achievements for the Association, for well over 30 years are a credit to himself and all members. The award was richly deserved to a popular & devoted member who continues to make a positive contribution to the Association We all congratulation Mario, and I for one would like to personally thank him for the assistance he has provided me this year.. Sponsors Canterbury League Club was again our major sponsor for the year 2011. Our relationship with the League Club is amicable and we are indebted to their continuing positive generosity. On top of the sponsorship payment, they also fully funded our new communication equipment for well over $10,000 and recently we have been advised that they have funded a Grant, following a proposal sent to them to assist in the Association funding the exchange program, and the development & recruitment of new referees. They also provide us with use of the Club, free of charge to hold meetings. It goes without saying that we appreciate and acknowledge the assistance and generosity provided by the Board of Directors of the Club. All members are encouraged to give back to the Club whatever they can, whenever they can. Ronnies Demolition and Excavation were again our sleeve sponsor for the season. We thank Paul and Yvette Hassarati for the generous input to the Association, not just financially, but through their friendship and attendance at many of our social functions. Nathan Hall and Control Painting and Decorating were again our shorts sponsors.
11
We also appreciate the assistance of the NSW Harness Racing Club for providing the cost and production of the Annual report. Junior League Generally the season proper ran fairly smoothly during the year and, in particular, grand final days at Hammondville Oval which were problem free days. During the year we had two minor assault charges on referees by players. These incidents were handled in a very professional manner by the Judiciary At times we had a few problems with the new Judiciary system and the early guilty plea procedure. The problem related to whether referees were to be given the opportunity to provide evidence where players sent off and charged and had pleaded not guilty, then changed their plea at the hearing. A meeting with the Junior League and Chairman of the Judiciary quickly resolved the problem and clear guidelines were agreed on.. Congratulations to Stavros Anagnostakis for winning the junior league’s Les Matthews Referees’ Appreciation Award, as voted by the clubs. Stavros had a frustrating year with injuries and study & work commitments, so I am sure he will appreciate this award. John McCormack and I met with Kevin Shanahan from the Junior League, and Alan Thompson from the District Club on a number of occasions. The meetings were beneficial and we were able to iron out some problems that we were encountering. I would like to offer our thanks to Kevin and look forward to our continuing relationship to ensure the game of Rugby League continues to prosper in our district, and more directly as far as we are concerned, the protection of referees. We did request the Junior League to help fund the Association for payment of touch judges in trials, and also Appointment Board members going to grounds and assessing referees, however due to their financial constraints they were unable to assist. The Junior League assisted us in implementing the new NSW Rugby League initiative of Tough Love in League, and we thank them for this. This was a program to help reduce the on field violence amongst players from Under 13’s to 16’s. The program is likely to be used this year up to A grade with some minor changes. Membership & Meetings The association held 13 general meetings during the year, and the average attendance was 38. 12
There were 15 new members this season and all of them settled in well to refereeing. One transferred from another Association and the other 14 were new members. In the continuing tradition of the Association we had 2 lots of new father & son referees, one is the son of an existing member and another is the father of an existing member. The new members were Marwan Dadoun, Kane Thorburn, Jake Cairnes, Adnan Obeid, Dave & Aidan Harrington, Dylan Elias, Richard Langtry (from St George District), Amr Mustafa, Steve & Ryan Yerbury, Jeremy Safi. David Haddad, Jake Safetly & Pierre Gerges. The average attendance at some meetings has steadily decreased over the past few years. Active members in particular are reminded that meetings are an integral part of your commitment as a referee, and can be of great assistance to your development. Whilst we try to report through the Minutes and other technological means what transpired during the meetings, it is more beneficial if, through your attendance, you can contribute to the discussions. It is unfortunate that at times I am asked about something by a member or members, or that they are not aware of something which had been discussed and agreed on, at a meeting. The meetings are also a great avenue for mixing socially in a friendly atmosphere with fellow members. We also had the privilege this year of having at our meetings the following address the membership: Bill Harrigan – Bill provided a great insight in what is required to become an NRL referee. He also gave us an overview of his career and the latest developments and going ons in refereeing at a NRL & Development Squad level. We are grateful to Bill for his attendance in what must be a very busy schedule John Walford, Chairman Junior League Judiciary – John detailed the Judiciary procedures and what to expect, as a referee, player & official when attending. His talk and discussion was something that would in particular, be beneficial to all active members. Gerard Sutton - Gerard, an NRL referee, gave a talk on the commitment required in becoming an NRL referee and the dedication required in staying there. He also briefly talked about his experiences and wished all members good luck in whatever they wanted to achieve from refereeing. Later in the year at one of our meetings, the Association also embarked on official photographs to commemorate our 90th anniversary
13
Training & Development Unlike the last few years, training this year under the leadership & guidance of Adam Gee & David Abood has been well attended. I am sure all who have attended have had great benefit and enjoyment. We often had over 25 members attend and in most cases over 20. Our thanks to Gerard Sutton & Ben Cummins who attended some of our training nights to offer their assistance and experiences. We would like to see the numbers grow even further in the next few years, and for all members with higher aspirations in refereeing, should consider training as a rule rather than an exception. We acknowledge that family, work & study commitments can be a barrier to regular attendance at training, but every effort should be made to attend whenever possible. Grade – NSWRL/NRL Our graded members all performed well this season. Their achievements includedDavid Abood – Sideline Official for all 26 rounds and first 2 weeks of semi finals of the NRL. During the year David officiated in his 250th NRL game – congratulations on an extraordinary achievement. . Adam Gee – NRL debut as a Referee – it has been over 10 years since we last had a member referee a first grade game. Stand-by Referee Toyota Cup Grand Final & Referee Toyota Cup Qualifying Final. Also, NRL Sideline Official and Toyota Cup Referee during the rest of the year. Referee Junior Kangaroos v Junior Kiwis Richard Daizli – NSW Cup Grand Final Sideline Official Mathew Damaso – Bundaberg Red Cup Grand Final Sideline Official. . Jimmy Oliveira – NSW Cup Grand Final In-goal judge. Doug Keen was presented with Life Membership of the NSW Referees Association. This was well deserved for his outstanding and tireless work. Doug is currently on the NSWRA Board of Directors, as well as being on the Advisory Board and holds a position of Referee Development Officer. Congratulations from all your friends at Canterbury.

Barry Ruttle John Maarbani Phelix El Kek
Vale During 2011 it was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of one of our ex Presidents and Life Member, Robert (Bob) Styles after a long battle with cancer. Bob served as President for 7 years and was a great friend of all who met him. Since the inception of the Clubb-Johnson trophy in 1978, Bob was the first multiple winner in 1979 & 1983. Bob also was elected as the original President of the ARLRA, and was a graded referee who officiated in many first grade games as a touch judge. He will be sadly missed. We also received the sad news of the recent passing of Life Member Alan Aggett after a long illness. I had spoken with his wife earlier in the year and she advised that he was very sick and residing in a nursing home. We also learned of the passing of ex international player and 1st grade referee Keith Holman. The association extends its deepest sympathy to the families and friends of all these good people, and to all members who have suffered a loss during the year. Social Gavin Beecroft and his committee are to be commended on the professionalism they have shown in organising and ensuring all social functions are run proficiently. In particular, our main functions, the Blue & White Cabaret, the Life Members night and the Leo Randle meeting. These functions are put on for the benefit of all members, and are heavily subsidised by the Association. The Committee is highly appreciative of all members who have attended these, and all other functions held during the year, and encourage all members to seriously consider attending these in the future. General The Association generally had another successful season. An increase in the number of active referees enabled us to appoint referees and touch judges 15
(Under 14’s and up) to all games. Richard Daizli and his committee of Kim Archer & Matt Damaso are to be commended on the work they did each week in doing the appointments. If there was a down side, it was that some referees are still pulling out with late notice. It is important that referees advise the Director as soon as they are aware they are unable to officiate. Unfortunately, due to some unsavoury incidents relating to spectators behaviour, and involving the Greenacre & St George Dragons Clubs, it was necessary for us to take the action of refusing to officiate games at Roberts Park & Clemton Park. In regards to Roberts Park, the referees indicated that they felt threatened by some Greenacre spectators and were concerned over their safety, as they believed the Ground Managers were unable to control thems. The issue involving St George Dragons related to a complaint written to us about a referee’s performance, in which they indicated that they could not guarantee the protection of the referee if he refereed at their home ground. These issues have seemingly resolved with certain conditions, following discussions with the District Club and Junior League. Greenacre have given us an assurance that their Ground Managers are fully committed to the protection of referees and control of their spectators. In regards to St George Dragons, we have since received an apology from the Club, and a commitment that they, as a Club, are fully aware of their responsibilities in protecting referees, and will do their utmost to ensure our protection. In conclusion, I would like to thank the many members who have assisted me in my first year as Secretary. The rest of the Executive & the Committee have been great and have responded quickly whenever I requested their input or for information. As I said in the beginning of my report, I have no doubt been disappointing to some members at times, and for this I can only apologise. However, some referees need to realise that they also have responsibilities and should not always rely on others for information. We all have busy lives with family, work and/or study, and we can’t always just drop everything, nor can we be waiting on the phone for a call to answer a problem. From a personal point of view, I have most of the time enjoyed the responsibility and the challenge of being your Secretary, however I hold a responsible job, which obviously has to be my number one priority whilst at work. At times, I just don’t have the time to devout to refereeing and at other times I may not be contactable all day. This coupled with the demands of being a parent of 3 teenage children, and a dinosaur when it comes to computers, has made me think about whether I am the right person for the job of Secretary. I may be judging myself too hard, and accept that ultimately I am judged by the members. 16
The Committee believes the time is right for the Association to appoint a new position of web master, and I think this is the right decision as this would greatly assist the role of the Secretary. I would like to thank Robert Dubois, the Assistant Secretary, for his assistance during the year. Robert did most of the computer work, and I think by the end of the season, this may have got too much for him. Good luck to all members in 2012 and see you at the AGM. George Elias HON. SECRETARY

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT Mr. Gavin Beecroft
Cricket Day The 2011 social year commenced in early February with our annual Cricket Day. We had about 25 members and friends attend in their whites hoping to get a bat and bowl, and some members showed up to watch. It was pleasing to see a good turnout for the day with a BBQ lunch provided and was enjoyed by all that attended. 90th Anniversary Cocktail Party It is not every year that one gets to celebrate 90 years in any format, fortunately our Association reached that milestone in 2011. To celebrate our 90th Anniversary, the Canterbury Bankstown Referees Association hosted a Cocktail Party for all members and their partners to celebrate this great milestone in the Association’s history. The night covered some history about the Association and there was some memorabilia on display showing off some of the Association’s proud history. We had some 65 members of the Association and their partners attend and it was pleasing to see many of our more senior members. Sunday Night Feast This year’s Sunday Night Feasts were conducted on two occasions throughout the year, in April and September. These night swere once again enjoyed by the members and their partners. We had 15attend on April & 18 members and their partners attended in September .Again these nights were supported by the same members on a monthly basis, who regularly attended Sunday Night Feasts over the years. After the Association’s financial contribution, often it works out to be a relatively cheap night for dinner for those who attend. Throughout 2011 we enjoyed Pizza in Belfield early in the season and Pizza for the end of season bash on Gala Night at Georges Hall. Blue and White Cabaret The first major function and premier night for the year was the Blue and White Cabaret and Presentation Night which was held on the Sunday evening on the June long weekend in 2011. The night was a great success. We had approximately 113 18
members, partners, sponsors and special guests attend this evening. As always the room looked great decked out in the traditional blue & white colours, and there was plenty of food, drinks and fun had by all who attended. Congratulations to Mario Cafarelli who received recognition for his efforts within the Association over the past 33 years and was re-presented with Life Membership after first obtaining Life Membership in 1990. As always a special thanks to our long time major sponsors the Canterbury League Club for the donation of the room for the evening and the League Club staff. Leo Randle Meeting Night The final Association meeting was held in late August and was known as the Leo Randle Meeting. This was the Association’s last meeting before Junior League Gala Day. The meeting was strongly attended by the membership, with approximately 55 members in attendance. It was a night to reflect on the efforts and contributions Leo made to the Association over the many years he was involved. Life Members Reunion The Life Members Reunion Night was held again at the Canterbury League Club on the last Friday evening of September. It was an enjoyable night for all those who attended and as usual it was an opportunity for senior members to mingle with the younger members of the Association and share stories of the bygone era. As per usual, the feature of the evening was the presentation of the ‘John Farrelly-Reg Dick Trophy’, ‘Clubb-Johnson Trophy’ and ‘Leo Randle Award’ and of course there was the annual laugh, the ‘Sorbent Awards. Special thanks to Nathan Loveday and Daniel Gardner for arranging and presenting the “Sorbent Awards” for 2011. Indoor Sports day In order to provide the active members, and all other members with a fun and enjoyable social and sporting event, the Association hosted an Indoor Sports Day in October. It was also an opportunity to reward those active members who regularly attended Tuesday night training throughout the 2011 season. A BBQ lunch was provided on the day. Unfortunately the day was not very well supported with only 13 active members showing up for the day. But we were still able to play various sports such as indoor cricket, indoor soccer and beach volleyball. Golf Day With the Golf Committee dissolved for 2011, the 2011 Annual CBRA Golf Day is now part of the social committees agenda. The Golf day was held at Sefton Golf Course (all par 3) in late October 2011, with about 30 members, family and guests teeing off hoping to win various awards on offer. The day proved very successful and there was good feedback from the members. Thanks to Robert Dubois assisting 19
in organising a great day by arranging the prizes. Also I would like to thank the scorers, Peter Longhurst and Cliff Haynes for their efforts in working out the handicap scores, as they have done year after year. Also thanks to Glenn, Lionel Brian and Joe (‘the taste tester”) who assisted in looking after the BBQ on the day. Association Kids/ Picnic Christmas Lunch The Kid’s Picnic/Christmas Lunch was held for the second year in a row at the Panania- East Hills Diggers Club. While the numbers where down, particularly among the children, when compared with previous years (perhaps due to demographics of the Association and we are not breeding as we have done in the past). The weather was also a bit unkind to us this year, with a cool rainy day (strange for December). But those who attended had a great day and a great lunch. This year a new Santa dropped by and visited the children to the surprise of all including the adults. Closing I would like to thank Adam, Stavros and Nathan for their efforts in assisting with preparations of functions and social events throughout 2011. In closing, I would also like to once again say a big thank you to all those members who have supported me over the past three years in my role as Social Secretary. Special thanks to my Socia lCommittee over the past three years, Chris Cafarelli, Adam Gee, Nathan Loveday, Stavros Anagnostakis, Feras Karem and current and past Executive and Committee. There comes a time when new challenges emerge ,and on that basis, it is my intention not to be seeking re-election ( at time of writing) for Social Secretary position for 2012. I have enjoyed my role as the Association Social Secretary over the past three years. For my successor, whom ever that is - I wish you the best of luck and I will of course offer my full support and assistance to you, in transitioning into this role. Gavin Beecroft SOCIAL SECRETARY

COACHING COORDINATOR’S REPORT Mr. Lionel Brown
This year we started off a bit different then normal. After seventeen years, Barry Ruttle was not leading the way for the district coaching providers, as the NSW Referees Accreditation Manager. I would take this opportunity to thank him for the great effort and support that he has freely given over the years. The education for new referees in 2011 saw the Association’s coaching panel conduct three NRAS Level 1 courses at the Lakemba Serane Thorburn, Jake Cairns, Dylan Elias, Adnan Obeid, David Harrington, Aidan Harrington, Jake Safetly, David Haddad, Pierre Gerges, Steven Yerbury, Ryan Yerbury, Jeremy Safi and Amr Mustafa. In this year’s intake there were two more father and son combination, this brings the Association number to fourteen, which must be a record. The Australian Rugby League Development (ARLD) is trying to head towards remote learning, where a candidate may complete a Level 1 refereeing course via the internet and then seek to join an association to complete practical training. The commencement date was targeted at January 2012, but a trial period of twelve months will be now conducted, and a review at the end of this period. Many thanks must go to my two good mates Joe Attard and Glenn Jeffcoat, who put in the long hours to coach new referees not only at the NRAS courses but on game days. Also Barry Belford attended courses later in the year, passing on valuable knowledge and experience to the new comers. To those referees who watched over the new ones at games, well done and thank you. Next season is just around the corner and we will be looking for assistance with the class of 2012. TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT REPORT
Mr. Adam Gee Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and are gearing up for the New Year and training once again. As this year was my first year of holding the position of Training Co-ordinator my aim was to create variety and hopefully increase our numbers at training. Well our numbers were up on previous years, which was good to see and I must thank the Committee for the funds provided to us for much needed equipment which assisted greatly. To create variety and interest in training, my goals were to have 20-30 minutes of fitness, 30 minutes of skills and 20-30 minutes of games. I would also like to thank Lionel for keeping the attendance sheet and Glenn for the training singlets he organised, as well as the barbeques. Also thank you to my offsider David Abood and to others who also filled in for me when work commitments arose. Thank you also to Ben Cummins and Gerry Sutton for giving up their time to attend our training sessions and meetings, their valuable coaching advice was much appreciated. Next year's training will again include variety, with varied skill sessions, so hope to see you all ready and rearing to go for another successful season. Regards
Adam Gee

DIRECTOR OF REFEREES’ REPORT Mr. Richard Daizli
Season 2011 started with trials in March and I would like to thank all referees who officiated in those matches. Special thanks to George Elias for looking after these appointments as I was new in the role. The first round of appointments went well with no changes but that was not to last long. Most weekends there were late changes, some as late as the morning of the games. Many times the excuses were poor and those who constantly pull out are only affecting their chances of progressing. Late changes lead to frantic phone calls and spending Friday nights ensuring all games were covered. There were a number of wet weekends which led to the Junior League making changes to grounds on the morning of the games. This made it difficult to reappoint referees as some games were cancelled and others were put at odd times. In saying that, all games went as scheduled and all referees were accommodating and made my job a lot easier. There were some referees who went beyond the call of duty to help out and I would like to especially thank them. The only games we had difficulty in covering at times were the Under 14s touch lines on Saturday. There was always one touch judge in attendance but having to move referees around with the restrictions most have on Saturdays made it difficult to fully cover these games. This may need to be reviewed in 2012 to see if a better system can be put in place. We had a large number of new referees start in 2011 and hopefully they enjoyed the experience, and will be with us in 2012. A larger pool of referees leads to more competition and better performances, so hopefully we will see some of them progress through the grades. The rotation policy adopted years ago was continued in an attempt to further develop our referees. This was forced on us early in the year as one week we would have five senior games of Under 19s and A grade and the following week this would increase to 11 senior games. We made the decision to promote some referees to have more officials experienced in doing the higher grades. Teams would also have the benefit of being refereed by different officials. Most referees at all levels were given the opportunity to referee at a grade higher than they would do most weekends to gain further experience. It was pleasing that most handled the step up and will be better for the experience. Some were able to excel and remain at the 24
higher grade and were able to further improve the more games they did. This created healthy competition in the higher grades. The Inter City Competition was expanded to include all grades from Under 15s to A Grade. This made it difficult to appoint referees on a weekly basis as well as in the finals. On a weekly situation, the number of games we would get to officiate fluctuated. This meant a referee could do an Under 19s one week and then do an Under 16s the following week due to the lack of games. In the finals, the number of games Canterbury received changed every week. We were able to get five Sunday grand finals out of the 11 Sunday grand finals contested. This included the A grade which was a plus for our district. Unfortunately we had no referees in the Junior Representative squad this year but we have a few who are very close to selection. Provided they keep learning and do the extra work, their opportunity may come in 2012.. A big thank you to all the advisory board members who spent many weekends out watching referees in an effort to make them better officials. Hopefully all referees benefited from their advice and words of wisdom. All referees were watched this year but an area of improvement for next year is to have all referees watched an equal number of times and at different stages of the year.. Special thanks to Kim Archer and Mathew Damaso for their help throughout the season. Kim’s experience as a board member made my life a lot easier with plenty of advice on how to best handle the role. Mat helped implement some technical changes and ensured all referees were able to see their appointments via email. As a group, we worked well together and complemented each other and hopefully have made a positive contribution to the development of all referees. Plenty of hours were spent evaluating reports and completing appointments and we were generally happy with the standard of refereeing based on reports from board members and feedback from the clubs. Congratulations to those officials who were selected for the exchange program. Phelix El Kek and Barry Belford made the trip to the Sunshine Coast and John Gerges and Gavin Beecroft made the long journey to Perth. Feedback from those associations was that they refereed quite well and would be welcome back any time. Well done to all. Congratulations to all referees who officiated in grand finals. Hopefully you achieved the goals you set yourselves at the start of the year. Congratulations to John Maarbani for winning the Clubb-Johnson Trophy for being the number one referee in the district and officiating in the A grade grand final. It has been a long time coming for John but was just reward as he put in the hard work at training and on the field. Congratulations to Phelix El Kek for being awarded the John FarrellyReg Dick Trophy for the most improved this year. Phelix also dedicated a lot of 25
time at training, taking in advice and was able to progress to the under 19s where he performed quite well. Thank you to the executive board for their support throughout the year and made my first year as a director of referees smoother than I anticipated. I would also like to thank Paul Archer for his many words of advice and encouragement which made us feel like we were making a difference. Also special thanks to Kevin Shanahan and the district club for their support throughout the year. It was the first time working with Kevin and communication was constant in ensuring the weekends went to plan. I would also like to thank my family for their support and understanding especially with the many hours spent on Friday nights trying to rearrange officials. Enjoy the time off and set your goals for 2012 and do the extra work to achieve them. Richard Daizli

HON. TREASURER’S REPORT Mr. Brad Zarb
In 2011 we changed the association’s financial year end date back a month to October 31. This has greatly eliminated inflated figures on the profit/loss statement due to values crossing over into different years to which they relate to, and it also allows for many more cheques for referees fees to clear before end of year making the auditing process a lot simpler. The overall result for the 13 months was an increase in equity of $5,127.68. This figure alone is not a true indication of how the associated faired for the period as it was significantly impacted by 3 values of note:1. The association obtained 20 new communication sets. The value was $10,991 and this was paid for by the Leagues club and Football club. The value can be seen in the grants section. 2. A carryover debit of $3,321 for Life Member’s night 2010. 3. The cocktail party was held this year at a cost of $2,841. Allowing for these transactions which will not be seen next year, and given that we have a similar year financially, we should see a small profit next year and there is no reason why we cannot maintain that yearly from this point. The 2011 figures show no term deposit values carried over from 2010. It should be noted that these values are currently being held and are reflected in the CBA main account. Values will be moved into new term deposits with Arab Bank once we complete the transition over to that bank. This will occur early in 2012, once all outstanding cheques have been presented on the CBA account. For the members’ information current values of term deposits are as follows:• •
General T.D. - $11,031.26 Centenary Fund T.D. - $11,633.29
We were again fortunate to have the Leo Randle trust provide the association with funds for gear, training, coaching & development, as well as the popular exchange program. The fund provided the association with the total amount of $6,537. It is important that all members appreciate the fact that these funds left to the association allow us to offer members many benefits, such as interstate trips where 27
they gain such valuable experience, something which we would otherwise not be able to offer on a yearly basis. A special mention must go to our sponsors, Canterbury Bankstown League Club Ltd., Ronnies Demolition & Excavation, Control Painting and Decorating and National Trotguide who provided support once again. The support we receive from all sponsors is greatly appreciated by the association. The NSWRL Referees’ Association again sent grants to the association throughout the year to assist with the development of referees, and these were also gratefully received.
I would like to conclude by thanking the committee for the help and support I have received in my role as Treasurer over the last 4 years, and to the members as a whole for embracing the changes that we have made over the last few years to ensure the association can support itself financially for many years to come.
Brad Zarb HON. TREASURER

2011 RECIPIENT
Barry Ruttle Barry Ruttle joined the association in 1981 and immediately showed his potential & interest as a referee. Within 6 years he achieved the Clubb Johnson trophy and took a very keen interest in enforcing & interpreting the Safe Play & Mini.Mod rules. He served as Social Secretary for 4 years and over 20 years on the Advisory/Appointment Board. Despite his age (closer to 70 then 65) he continues to actively referee each weekend, as well as assisting other referees. Barry is a very deserved recipient of the 2011 Leo Randle Award. Congratulations Barry.
