All’improvviso. O, per dirla all’inglese, “out of the blue”, quel senso di inatteso che si affaccia dietro la coltre scura di un colore che può, al tempo stesso, ricordare e raccontare l’immensità della notte o del mare più profondo. Le storie dei nostri uomini, dei protagonisti di questo nuovo numero di Book Moda Mag, prendono all’improvviso strade del tutto nuove, virano, cavalcando l’onda di una passione che spinge verso mari sconosciuti, lidi a volte insoliti ai quali, spesso, non ci si può e non ci si vuole sottrarre. Le abbiamo raccolte queste storie d’arte e di moda, di musica e di fotografia, le abbiamo riunite in una sorta di mappatura unendo i puntini e le linee, un alfabeto Morse o un atlante, se preferite, che segna e si sfoglia sulle pulsioni più intime, quelle che spingono a cambiare rotta, all’improvviso. “Out of the blue”, tra cielo e mare, o tutt’e due, per provare a tratteggiare le sfumature dell’animo maschile, le profondità, la fragilità e la forza necessarie per la realizzazione dei propri desideri. Sempre alla ricerca del migliore approdo e sempre pronti a salpare. Anche con il vento contro. Buona lettura e felice estate a voi tutti.

All of a sudden. Or, to use another phrase, “out of the blue”, that sense of unexpectedness revealed behind the dark blanket of colour that can recall and relate at once the immensity of the night and the depths of the sea. The stories of our men, the stars in this new issue of Book Moda Mag, suddenly take all-new paths, riding the wave of a passion that pushes them towards unknown seas, to unusual shores that one often can’t or doesn’t want to avoid. We have gathered together these stories of art and fashion, music and photography, and mapped them out by joining the dots and dashes, a Morse code, or an atlas if you prefer, that marks and opens out onto the most intimate drives; those that push us to suddenly change course. “Out of the blue”, between sky and sea, or both, to try to sketch the shades of the male soul, the depths, the fragility and the strength needed to make their dreams come true. MICHAEL FASSBENDER Nato il 2 aprile 1977 in Germania e cresciuto in Irlanda, Michael Fassbender è uno degli attori più amati della sua generazione. E non solo perché bellissimo. Intelligente indagatore dell’animo umano, il suo è un talento decisamente fuori dal comune che porta sulle spalle il peso di grandi capolavori cinematografici sposati dalla critica e insieme - e senza sforzo - di blockbuster da una notte e via. Sempre pronto a mettersi in gioco e a rischiare, Fassbender ha indossato i panni di un attivista politico in Hunger di Steve McQueen e di un androide in Prometheus di Ridley Scott. Si è spogliato in Shame e si è misurato in ruoli di diverso spessore, da Macbeth a Magneto degli X-Men, passando per un giovane Carl Jung in A Dangerous Method di David Cronenberg e per il fondatore di Apple Steve Jobs nell’omonimo film diretto da Danny Boyle. Qui, l’attore è al fianco di Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara e Natalie Portman in un’intima e tormentata storia d’amore a quattro ambientata ad Austin nel mondo della musica. Una vicenda seguita “chick to chick” dal regista con l’effetto di guardare un qualcosa di privato, di spiare sguardi e comportamenti indiscreti: “La troupe di Malick è come una folle banda di pirati che ti gira attorno nel tentativo di catturare i momenti di caos”, dice Fassbender. Questa volta Michael interpreta Cook, un produttore musicale senza scrupoli e di Armani vestito. “Secondo le indicazioni che mi ha dato Malick questo personaggio doveva assomigliare al Satana di Paradiso perduto - racconta - E a questo mi sono ispirato. In questo film cerco sempre di creare tensione e di provocare le persone. Cook è un produttore musicale molto benestante al quale piace provare qualsiasi cosa il denaro possa comprare, che si diverte a sedurre le persone che fanno parte del suo mondo. È come se volesse che gli altri lo accompagnassero lungo il suo viaggio verso la depravazione”. “Credo che il mio personaggio inveisca contro Dio, perché ritiene di dover essere anche lui un Dio”. Non si tratta di giudicare chi è buono e chi è cattivo, solo di osservare la realtà del comportamento umano e cercare di riprodurla, si tratti poi di politici, supereroi, personaggi storici, letterari, fantascientifici o uomini qualunque e, comunque, se interpretati da lui, sempre diversi, è solo una variante o, che dir si voglia, una mutazione di Michael Fassbender. Born on 2 April 1977 in Germany and raised in Ireland, Michael Fassbender is one of the best-loved actors in his generation. And not just because of his good looks. An intelligent examiner of the human soul, his is a talent quite out of the ordinary that has carried on its shoulders a variety of critically-acclaimed and commercially successful blockbusters. Always ready to take risks, Fassbender has played hunger striking political activist in Hunger by Steve McQueen and an android in Prometheus by Ridley Scott. He has stripped off in Shame and taken on roles of varying depth, from Macbeth to Magneto in X-Men, through the young Carl Jung in David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method and Apple founder Steve Jobs in Danny Boyle’s eponymous film. A story followed “up close and personal” by the director with the effect of looking at something private, of spying on indiscreet glances and behaviour: “Malick’s crew is like a crazy band of pirates walking around you trying to capture moments of chaos,” says Fassbender. This time Michael plays Cook, an unscrupulous, Armani-wearing music producer. “According to the direction Malick gave me, this character had to resemble Satan in Paradise Lost,” he says, “So that’s how I played him. Like him, in this film I always try to create tension and provoke people. Cook is a very well-off music producer who likes trying anything money can buy, who has fun seducing the people in his world. It’s as though he wants others to go along with him on his journey towards depravity.” “I think my character is railing against God, because he feels that he too is a God.” It isn’t about deciding who is good and who is bad, but only observing real human behaviour and trying to reproduce it, whether it be politicians, superheroes, historical or science-fiction characters or ordinary men. Whatever parts he chooses, it will only ever be a variation or, call it what you will, a mutation of Michael Fassbender.

ZAYN At just 24 years of age, he is Britain’s youngest recording artist to reach number one in the UK and US charts with his début single and album. He is Zayn, singer, member of One Direction until 2015, and the single in question is Pillowtalk, taken from the album Mind of Mine, released in March 2016 on RCA Records. Well-received by critics, the album features a mix of R&B, hip-hop and reggae, which Zayn listened to and was influenced by as a child. He grew up alongside his three sisters, a Pakistani father and an English mother converted to Islam, in West Yorkshire in a family without many economic prospects. “There was never any room to experiment with my creativity in the band,” he said of his 2015 split with One Direction after five years of great success and millions of adoring fans worldwide. Between recriminations and accusations of drug abuse, the reasons for the split are still not clear. What is clear is that the boy-band, which arose out of the 2010 edition of X Factor UK, for him that had auditioned with a song by R&B singer Mario, had perhaps gone in too much of a pop direction, inducing him to opt for a solo career. Voted the world’s sexiest Asian man for two consecutive years and amongst the most influential figures in the fashion system, with over 50 million followers on the web, Zayn has been chosen as the new face of Versus for Spring/Summer 2017. “Working with Versus was crazy. Donatella is great!” he says, adding: “The fact that Gigi shot the campaign makes it even better.” Yes, behind the lens was none other than his beautiful fiancé, top model Gigi Hadid, whom he has been with for about a year. The images, just like the ones posted every day on their social network profiles, snapped on a smartphone at Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles, alongside the other model in the photos, Adwoa Aboah, also convey an immediate sense of intimacy without filters. “The Versus campaign represents everything special about Zayn, Gigi and Adowa. They are young people who talk a language full of truth, energy and love,” declared Donatella Versace. “I can’t wait to present my capsule collection,” concluded the singer, who has created a series of exclusive pieces alongside the label. Nonostante si sia formata solo nel 2009 con Dan Reynolds, il frontman, Wayne Sermon, il chitarrista, Ben McKee al basso e Daniel Platzman alla batteria, la band è già riuscita a portarsi a casa dei risultati senza precedenti, conquistando costantemente i vertici di tutte le classifiche, vendendo milioni di copie in ogni angolo del pianeta e posizionandosi al centro della scena indie rock alternativa americana. In attesa di rivelare il nuovo, nonché terzo album, gli Imagine Dragons ci concedono un assaggio mentre girano il mondo con un tour che tocca i principali Paesi, portando con sé una grande positività che mai prima d’ora avevano sentito di possedere. Come raccontano nell’intervista, in esclusiva per Book Moda.
Despite them only forming in 2009, with front man Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon, bass player Ben McKee and drummer Daniel Platzman, the band has already had incredible success, rocketing to the top of all the charts, selling millions around the world and positioning themselves at the heart of the American alternative indie rock scene. In this exclusive interview for Book Moda, Imagine Dragons give us a sneak peek into their upcoming, third album while on their world tour and tell us about the new-found positivity they now carry with them everywhere they go.
Siete felici di essere tornati ancora una volta in Italia? DR: Moltissimo. Noi amiamo l’Italia e la cucina italiana, tra l’altro, durante una delle sere in cui siamo venuti a Milano per promuovere il nuovo singolo Believer, abbiamo mangiato in un ristorante famoso e molto buono, il Ribot, amiamo quel posto. E poi le donne sono bellissime, il popolo italiano è meraviglioso e passionale. Insomma, ci piace davvero tanto stare qui con voi!
Are you happy to be back in Italy? DR: Really happy. We love Italy and Italian food. When we were in Milan promoting our new single Believer, we ate at this really good, famous restaurant, Ribot, we love that place. The women are beautiful, and Italians are just wonderful, passionate people. We just love being here with you!
Cosa potete raccontarci a proposito del nuovo singolo Believer? DR: Questa canzone vuole far riflettere sulla propria vita, sul fatto che dalla sofferenza e dai momenti bui si possa diventare più forti e bisogna essere grati per questo. Il video raffigura un uomo che affronta se stesso, la cosa più difficile da fare. Però le avversità portano a diventare una persona più sicura di sé e la canzone, infatti, parla anche di questo, del bisogno di credere in se stessi, concentrarsi su se stessi per trovare la propria pace interiore.
What can you tell us about the new single Believer? DR: This song gets you to think about your life, about the fact that suffering and dark times can make us stronger and we have to be grateful for that. The video features a man who is facing himself, the hardest thing we can do. But adversities can make you more selfconfident and the song is also about that, about the need to believe in yourself, focus on yourself to find your inner peace.
C’è un brano all’interno del nuovo album che vi ha dato maggiore soddisfazione rispetto agli altri? DR: In verità troviamo soddisfazione in ogni canzone prodotta per un nostro album, lasciamo decidere alle persone quale sia la “migliore”, la loro preferita. Sicuramente all’inizio abbiamo una nostra favorita, però è probabile che la settimana dopo la scelta sia già cambiata. Quindi, non saprei decretarne una nello specifico. Sicuramente con Believer abbiamo fatto un bel lavoro.
Is there a track on the album you found more rewarding than the others? DR: To tell the truth, we find every song on the album rewarding. We let the people decide which one is the “best” or their favourite. We certainly have our favourites at the start, but they are likely to change from week to week. So I wouldn’t know which one to pick. We’re definitely pleased with what we’ve done with Believer.
Il video ufficiale vede la partecipazione di Dolph Lundgren, il famoso attore svedese noto per la sua interpretazione di Ivan Drago nel film Rocky IV, per citare un esempio. Come mai avete scelto lui? BM: Dolph Lundgren è un attore grandioso, diventato famoso per aver interpretato Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, ricorda la vecchia generazione e in questo video rappresenta una sorta di ritorno al passato, agli anni Ottanta, a noi piacciono molto i film di quegli anni, ci portano a pensare alla nostra infanzia e Rocky in particolare. Nel video, inoltre, si è esibito in una performance perfetta, colpendo più volte Dan (ironizza, ndr). Non poteva andare meglio di così.

The official video stars Dolph Lundgren, the wellknown Swedish actor famous for playing Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, to name just one example. How come you chose him? BM: Dolph Lundgren is a great actor who became famous for playing Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. He reminds us of the old generation and in this video he represents a kind of return to the past, to the Eighties. We really like the films from those years because they remind us of our childhood, Rocky in particular. He put in a perfect performance for the video and he punched Dan several times (he is joking, ed). It couldn’t have gone better.

La fantasia argentina, la passione italiana e l’eleganza francese. Natalio Simionato, nato a Buenos Aires da una famiglia di origini venete, oggi vive a Parigi ed è lo chef a domicilio più amato dai vip. L’amore per la cucina l’ha ereditato dalla madre e così, dopo la morte del padre in un incidente d’auto, abbandona la facoltà di giurisprudenza e inizia a viaggiare in tutto il mondo, lavorando come modello per mantenersi e poter apprendere e studiare l’arte culinaria. Occhi intensi, capelli castani e lineamenti da far girare la testa, è convinto che cucinare sia un po’ come amare: “O ci si abbandona completamente o si rinuncia”.
Argentinian imagination, Italian passion and French elegance. Natalio Simionato, born in Buenos Aires in a family of Veneto descent, now lives in Paris and is the celebrities’ favourite private chef. He inherited his love of cooking from his mother and so, after his father died in a car accident, he dropped out of law school and began travelling the world, working as a model to support himself and fund his culinary studies. With his piercing eyes, chestnut hair and supremely handsome features, he is convinced that cooking is a little like loving: “You either give in to it or you give up on it.”
Come definirebbe il suo modo di cucinare? La mia cucina è sicuramente il riflesso del mio modo di essere: intuitiva, spontanea, passionale e generosa. Gli amici mi dicono sempre che il mio punto forte è improvvisare con poche cose nel frigo. In realtà, non è improvvisazione, ma semplicemente applico le tecniche che ho imparato durante questi anni, prima a scuola e poi in giro per il mondo, lasciandomi guidare da ciò che vedo e sento al momento.
How would you define your style of cooking? My cooking is definitely a reflection of my way of being: intuitive, spontaneous, passionate and generous. Friends are always telling me that my strong point is improvising with just a few ingredients. But, actually, it isn’t improvisation, I’m just applying the techniques I learned over the years, first in school and then around the world, being guided by what I see and feel at the time.
So your job is also your passion. When did you fall in love with cooking and understand that you wanted to be a chef? When I was a boy, in Argentina, I would walk around and peek through neighbours’ windows because I was attracted by the smell of the cooking and I used to try to guess what they were making. My mum, an excellent cook, would always take me with her to the local market and we had fun choosing the best fruit and vegetables that she would prepare for my father and my 9 brothers and sisters. She was an important guide for me and I especially loved her style of cooking. In our district we used to offer food to those who couldn’t afford it and this would fill me with joy as a boy. Cooking has always been a part of my life, but only as an adult did I understand that I could making a living out of it, after studying day and night to become a chef.
Dunque, un lavoro che è anche una passione. Quando si è innamorato della cucina e ha capito di voler diventare uno chef? Da bambino, in Argentina, avevo la curiosità di andare in giro e avvicinarmi alle finestre dei vicini, perché ero attratto dal profumo che usciva delle cucine e mi sforzavo di indovinare che cosa stessero cucinando. Poi, accompagnavo sempre mia mamma, una bravissima cuoca, al mercato rionale e ci divertivamo a scegliere la frutta o la verdura migliore che avrebbe poi preparato per mio papà e i miei 9 fratelli. Insomma, è stata una guida importante per me, soprattutto amavo il suo modo di cucinare. Nel nostro quartiere spesso offrivamo del cibo a chi non poteva permetterselo e questo mi riempiva di gioia sin da bambino. La cucina è sempre stata presente nella mia vita, ma solo da grande ho scoperto che potevo trasformarla in un lavoro, certo studiando giorno e notte per diventare uno chef.
How did the idea of being a private chef come about? I always organised dinners and evenings for friends when I was younger. I liked making everyone feel at home, looking after every detail, from the menu to the table, the flowers and the music. When I came to Paris, I didn’t want to work in a restaurant as I had already done. I was looking for something different and I said to myself: “Why not take the restaurant to people’s homes instead?” So I set up my project and began with my website chefaparis.com. Word quickly spread and I began working for some high-profile families, especially in Paris and Monte Carlo. The best thing is that I do the shopping, set the table, do the cooking and then I can have some fun after dinner. This allows me to establish a direct relationship that I couldn’t do at a restaurant. At the end of the evening, we all sip a glass of champagne together and chat like old friends.
E l’idea di fare lo chef a domicilio come è nata? Ho sempre organizzato cene e serate per amici quando ero ragazzo, mi piaceva molto far sentire tutti come a casa propria, curando ogni dettaglio, dal menù alla tavola, ai fiori, alla musica. Quando sono arrivato a Parigi non volevo lavorare in un ristorante come avevo già fatto, ma cercavo un’idea diversa e mi sono detto: “Perché non portare il ristorante a casa delle persone?”. Così, ho strutturato il mio progetto e ho iniziato con il mio sito web chefaparis.com. In poco tempo si è sparsa la voce e ho iniziato a lavorare anche per famiglie molto importanti, sopratutto tra Parigi e Monte Carlo. La cosa bella è che faccio la spesa, preparo la tavola, cucino e, in più, ho la possibilità di intrattenermi dopo la cena. Questo mi permette di instaurare un rapporto diretto che altrimenti in un ristorante non potrei avere. Alla fine della serata sorseggiamo un bicchiere di champagne insieme, parlando di tutto come vecchi conoscenti.

Suspended between imagination and reality, dream-like and at times touched by horror, always charged with irony. What Tim Walker, the British fashion photographer born in 1970, recreates through his shots is a parallel and surreal world, a modern fairy tale into which the onlooker is pulled, trapped between a desire to flee without looking back and an incapacity to stop being completely drawn in.
Sospese tra fantasia e realtà, sognanti, oniriche, a volte un po’ horror, sempre e comunque immagini cariche di ironia. Quello che Tim Walker, fotografo di moda inglese, classe ’70, ricrea attraverso i suoi scatti è un mondo parallelo e surreale, una fiaba moderna in cui chi sta guardando viene trascinato, combattuto tra la volontà di fuggire senza voltarsi indietro e l’incapacità di venire meno alla completa dipendenza da essa.

All’improvviso, il blu. Out of the blue - letteralmente “fuori dal blu” - è un’espressione idiomatica che in inglese indica un qualcosa di inaspettato e simultaneo che esce dall’ordinario. Ecco allora un viaggio per immagini sulla potenza di un colore, le sue varianti cromatiche e le associazioni emotive che tanto spesso lo hanno legato a dolore, paura e sogno. THE RELATIVITY OF COLOURS
LA RELATIVITÀ DEI COLORI “Non c’è blu senza il giallo e senza l’arancione”, dice van Gogh. Per parlare di arte e di colori è dunque utile iniziare partendo dalle basi: il blu e il giallo sono colori primari e, tra loro, complementari. Goethe in particolare, antesignano anche in questo campo, spiega come dalla loro interazione e variazione di intensità si possano ottenere tutti gli altri colori, così che il blu è il principio del buio e, viceversa, il giallo l’inizio della sua fine. 1922, in Separazione di sera Paul Klee rappresenta, con linea e colore, una visione allargata e già astratta del cosmo: si tratta di un orizzonte che si confonde e moltiplica in più toni “Il giallo è una luce che è stata orizzontali di colore a acquerello - da un attenuata dalle tenebre, il blu marrone intenso sul un’oscurità indebolita dalla luce” bordo inferiore si pas“Yellow is a light which has been sa all’ocra e poi a un giallo chiaro, quasi dampened by darkness, blue is a bianco - e movimenti darkness weakened by light” verticali - una freccia Goethe, Theory of Colours offre la visione fredda del calare del sole e una più piccola il suo calore. Già da questa lettura sommaria, che si fonda su teorie di lunga data, si capisce subito come per un artista sia più che mai naturale scegliere i colori per dirigersi verso le sensazioni e associazioni da loro scaturite. 1963, un grande maestro della contemporaneità, Josef Albers, rivoluziona per sempre il carattere statico della pittura, del colore e delle forme geometriche per condurci all’estetica più in generale come noi oggi la comprendiamo o forse dovremmo comprenderla: il colore è il mezzo più relativo che ci possa essere in campo artistico e, per poter usarlo in modo efficace, è necessario convivere con la consapevolezza che esso inganna di continuo. Detto questo, possiamo iniziare il viaggio, consapevoli senza scuse - che sicuramente ne saremo ingannati.

When talking of art and of colours, it is therefore useful to start with the basics: blue and yellow are primary colours, and complementary to one another. Goethe in particular, a forerunner in this field too, explains how their interaction and changes in intensity can produce all other colours, such that blue is the beginning of darkness and, vice versa, yellow begins when it ends. Paul Klee’s 1922 work, Separation in the Evening, depicts a broadened and abstract vision of the cosmos using lines and colour: it features a horizon split into many horizontal bands of watercolour - from deep brown at the bottom to ochre to pale yellow, almost white - and vertical movements - depicted by a downward arrow showing the setting sun and a smaller upward arrow representing its warmth. This brief interpretation, based on long-standing theories, shows how an artist can naturally choose colours to depict the sensations and associations that they unleash. In 1963, the modern master Josef Albers revolutionised the static nature of painting, colour and geometric shapes, leading us towards the aesthetic that we now understand, or perhaps should understand, today: colour is the most relative means that one can have in art and, in order to use it effectively, one must live with the knowledge that it continuously deceives. That said, we can begin our journey, safe in the knowledge that we will surely be deceived.
