MEET YOUR PCC MARTYN UNDERHILL We talk to the newly elected Police & Crime Commissioner for Dorset

Martyn Underhill stood as an independent candidate in the Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections in November. He is a former police chief, noted for heading up the Sarah Payne murder investigation. Martyn's background in the police, not politics, proved a success with Dorset voters. We met up with Martyn at Crumbs Cafe in Boscombe to find out just what the PCC role is all about and what changes residents and businesses in Boscombe can expect to see with the new role. We started by asking for his interpretation of the PCC role, “The three words of the title are key, each one means something different. The 'Police' part represents the checks and balances of the police force; I hold them to account and can hire and fire the Chief Constable. 'Crime' is more generic. It's about joining the dots between the relevant agencies, such as the probation service and the council, to help ensure the journey for victims, and offenders, is improved. The 'Commissioner' part is equally as important as it's the side that oversees budgets and spending. For example the Community Safety Fund is about £400,000 and I have to commission services that ensure victims are looked after better". On why so few people knew about the election, and with just a 16.3% turn out in Dorset, Martyn commented, "The government rushed through the legislation, poorly advertised the election and organised the vote at a bad time of year. About 40% of the people I spoke to knew nothing about it and 1 in 5 didn't want it." Now in the role, we asked what his main objectives are, ”My top priority is to engage with the community, most police forces are not very

good at listening to the public. I want to improve victim services by creating the Victim's Bureau with a facility for victims to monitor their case online and doing more to stop re-offending. A large proportion of the most prolific offenders in Dorset live here in Boscombe so we have to stop their re-offending and break the cycle.“ We asked Martyn what issues he considers most urgent in the Boscombe area, "Boscombe's toughest challenge is the transient population. We have a fantastic community in Boscombe and a great spirit. But we have a high 20% transient population. If we can change that 20%, attract more young working couples and families and reduce the level of Houses with Multiple Occupation (HMO) in the area, we can begin to see a real change”. HMO's are associated with many of Boscombe's crime and related social issues. Martyn included a specific section on Boscombe in his election manifesto, "I made a commitment to the Boscombe community that, if I were to get elected, I would gather together a Special Task Force Forum to identify and tackle the issues in Boscombe. This will be coming together in 2013 and further details will follow”. Martyn finished with a look to the future, “The good news is there are so many organisations working to improve Boscombe, so many local people who want to change their community. The wish to change is fantastic and it's humbling. It's not going to happen overnight, it's a 3 to 4 year plan." We agreed to meet Martyn later in the year to check on his progress and also put your questiona to him. Let us know what you'd like us to ask, email your question to editor@boscombe.info or you can find out more about the PCC on the www.dorset.pcc.police.uk website.

HYPNOTHERAPY & BOWEN at the Essential Therapy Centre

The Essential Therapy Centre on Seabourne Road now offers hypnotherapy. Adam Scobbie trained in Hypnotherapy with the National Guild of hynotherapists. By combining Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with hypnosis, Adam offers a range of treatments, including Gastric Band, Phobias, Weight Management, Smoking Cessation and Stress Management to name but a few. If you would like more information or to arrange a free phone consultation please call 07596 332320 or visit: www.spotlessmind.co.uk The Gentle Giant Gary from the centre also wants to share his findings on Bowen, “I first came across Bowen through a colleague and after feeling how this gem of a therapy worked and provided a sense of wonder again about the mysteries of life and how we are well designed and well equipped to maintain our bodies. However, over the years we have been manipulated into seeking or searching for the gold paved streets of london instead of the preciousness of our individual beings who are collectively linked to the source and evolving as is the universe. I specialise in Bowen because I have experienced it's magic and seen results which were sometimes expected but at others still able to surprise. And recently I saw immediate results in treating a three month old baby with colic. Awaken your body to Bowen now. Don't suffer with pain.

WINTER ADVICE

Some useful tips to stay safe this winter

Can't Get to a library? If you can’t get to a local library during bad weather, you can renew books online at www.bournemouth.gov.uk/libraries Icy/Dangerous Roads? In Bournemouth a team of five gritters are ready to go with 1800 tonnes of road salt and are ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep the traffic moving when weather conditions dictate. You can follow the gritters on Twitter @bournemouthbc Stay Warm To keep warm and well during spells of cold weather: • Draw your curtains at dusk and keep your doors closed to block out draughts. • Have regular hot drinks and eat at least one hot meal a day if possible. Eating regularly helps keep energy levels up during winter. • Wear several light layers of warm clothes (rather than one chunky layer). • Keep as active in your home as possible. • Wrap up warm and wear shoes with a good grip if you need to go outside on cold days. Flu Season Flu symptoms can hit suddenly and severely. They usually include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles. You can often get a cough and sore throat. Because flu is caused by a virus and not bacteria, antibiotics won't treat it. See your GP to arrange flu jabs. Exercising in the Cold? As the temperatures drop you may be tempted to hang up your exercise gear and hibernate. Don't! Stay active throughout winter to beat those seasonal blues. Regular exercise will make you feel more energetic, which should make it a little easier to get out of your warm bed on cold mornings. Moderate exercise can strengthen the immune system, thereby reducing the risk of coughs and colds. Find out more online: www.nhs.uk/Livewell

NEW YEAR DENTAL OFFERS

Winfrom Pizza Shelley for 2 Manor Dental

Shelley Manor Dental is small, family-run private dental practice offering preventative, restorative and cosmetic dentistry services to patients of all ages and to families. The dental practice opened two years ago in the new medical centre, Shelley Manor, and is celebrating with some fantastic New Year offers. Free check-ups for children As a family friendly practice children (under 18) of registered patients are offered FREE check-ups all year round. In the New Year there is a 50% off Fissure Sealants promotion running for kids. Dr Tim Doyle recommends fissure sealants for kids, a “quick, safe and painless way to protect children's teeth from decay”. A fissure sealant is a protective plastic coating, which is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant forms a hard shield that prevents food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay. News on Tooth Whitening New legislation came into effect on 31st October 2012, stating that only registered dentists and their suitably trained teams can undertake tooth whitening. As a result Shelley Manor Dental has a special price on tooth whitening of £250, if you book in by 31st March 2013. Evening appointments – Free Parking For those of you who find it difficult to get away during the day to visit the dentist, evening appointments with both the dentist and hygienist are available.

MATHS Without WITHOUTTears TEARS Maths

with Connie and Edward NumberWorks’nWords with Connie and Edward fromfrom NumberWorks’nWords

Now that children are well into the school year, parents are beginning to receive reports about school performance. The most feared subject for many students is maths, generating, pain, panic and anxiety for students in primary through secondary education. There are several education research articles from around the world documenting this fear and anxiety. What can parents do at home to help their children learn maths? • Encourage your children to play maths games and puzzles. • Find ways to use maths in everyday activities. Have your children figure out the expected amount of change you should receive after buying several items and paying with a note of a larger amount. This encourages mental maths. • Try not to tell your children that you were or are bad at maths. A study by Eccles and Jacobs published decades ago revealed that daughters’ achievement in maths went down when their mothers told them how bad they were at maths. • Reassure your children that developing expertise takes time and practise. One thing we encourage our students to do when confronted with a problem is to take each one in manageable units, break it down so that the overall problem does not look daunting and brings on panic.

VALENTINES PUZZLES AND FACTS

not much condolence if you didn’t receive a card!

Q: Why did the banana go out with the prune? A: Because it couldn't get a date. Stupid Cupid has lost his famous bow and arrow. Can you help him through the maze to find them?

27

Valentine’s Day Facts Cupid is associated with Valentine's Day because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid holds a bow and arrows as he is believed to use magical arrows to arouse feelings of love. In Korea, if you do not receive any gift on Valentine's day then all the singles go to restaurants and eat black noodles to mourn their single status. Wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on Valentine's Day in Wales. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite Valentine decorations on the wooden spoons. This Valentine decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!" Of the 73% of people who buy Valentine's Day flowers are men, while only 27% are women.

A single perfect red rose framed with baby's breath is named by some florists as a "signature rose," and is the preferred choice for most for giving on Valentine's Day, anniversaries and birthdays. The red rose was the favourite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. The colour red stands for strong romantic feelings making the red rose the flower of love. In olden times some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on the Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

and finally, maybe not so romantic... could I thought that I r, love no othe et until, that is, I m r. he ot br ur yo

I love your I see your face when face, and smile, your I am dreaming, your eyes, damn, I'm that's why I always good telling lies! at wake up screaming.
