Hannah Makes TeenStar Regionals Boscombe based Hannah Stienen has been given a big thumbs up by judges at the TeenStar auditions. 15 year old Hannah has made it through to the Regional Finals and will be performing at the live stages of TeenStar. TeenStar is a national talent competition which searches for the UK’s best teens and pre-teens singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material. Hannah told us, “To get through the auditions, I performed an extract of a song I wrote about two months ago called ‘Oh My My My’, singing and playing the guitar.” Hannah will now take part in the live head to head battle alongside the best talent in their area. She’ll be performing in front of hundreds of audience members and a professional judging panel to win a place at the National Grand Final, held at the O2 in London. Former winner Hatty Keane has been signed to BGM and has performed sets alongside Ed Sheeran, Tinchy Stryder and Pitbull and is currently working on new material. The regional finals are being held in Bournemouth on the 14th of April at The Carrington Hotel. For more information go to the website www.teenstarcompetition.co.uk or come down and support Hannah.

IMAX SEATS GET SECOND LIFE
Shelley Theatre benefits from cinema demolition
Over 200 cinema seats have been donated to the Shelley Theatre from Bournemouth's defunct IMAX building. The much hated building is currently being demolished on the seafront. In February around 170 local people volunteered to help restore the Boscombe based theatre, which was built for Frankenstein author Mary Shelley. Shelley's son, Sir Percy Shelley, bought Boscombe Manor House for his mother and added the theatre and now funding is being sought for the project. A charity trust is being set up to run the theatre, organisers say. Patrick Keats, the theatre development director, told the BBC "It's a real community project that aims to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the manor. We want to create a space which can be used all year round”. Despite a lack of heating or electricity performances have been taking place at the theatre for the past two years and on the 17th May 2013 Lynn Shepherd will be talking about her new book ‘A Treacherous Likeness’. It‘s a mystery that explores the dark lives and unexplained secrets of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and his wife Mary. The story tells us of love and death, of loss and betrayal and this is a new fictional version of that story, which suggests shocking new answers to mysteries that have never yet been fully explained." Find out more about the Shelley Theatre project and buy tickets for the Lynn Shepherd reading in May online at: www.shelleytheatre.co.uk

Domestic Angels celebrates a decade of caring and cleaning Customers and staff have been quick to pay tribute to Domestic Angels, the Bournemouth based home help service, as it celebrates its tenth anniversary. “I am a long term cancer patient and on top of the gradual deterioration of everything else in the last few months, it has got so that I’m no longer able to do the housework,” says Zena Keyworth from Southbourne. “Janet, our Angel, is always so friendly and pleasant and does such a good job for us - it makes a real difference to our lives. Janet is like one of the family - she is more of a carer than a cleaner.” Philippa Davis from Canford Cliffs added “It’s extremely professional, reliable and nothing is too much trouble and being a locally conceived and grown business, I think is very important.” Samantha Acton, who started Domestic Angels in 2002, told us what the company’s services mean to her customers. “I always wanted us to provide more than what we actually do. I’d like to thank Janet and all our Angels who have embraced the philosophy that people come first and their needs cannot be boiled down into 15-minute time slots.”

IMPROVE READING COMPREHENSION Maths Without Tears with Connie and Edward from NumberWorks’nWords with Connie and Edward from NumberWorks’nWords
Here is a strategy that has good evidence of success in improving reading comprehension for children. It is based on work completed by Marjorie Siegel, a professor of education at Columbia University and has been researched by Trevor Cairney, among other educationalists and researchers. We are highlighting this because we identified it as a need by a number of children who come to our tutoring centre. Interestingly, difficulty with reading comprehension is not limited to just those students who come to us for help with English. It is also a problem for students who find word problems in maths challenging. “Sketch to Stretch” involves having students draw pictures while they read and after they read. It is intended to “stretch” students’ understanding of what they are reading and increase their comprehension of the material. It also gives children a non-word based method to affect their appreciation of what they are reading, fiction and non-fiction. This may help some children who are challenged by the written word. Here are the steps we suggest you have your children try: • Draw a picture to show what happened • Draw a picture of the character • Draw a picture to show what the character or person did, saw, heard, thought • Draw a picture of what might happen next or about the conclusion This strategy may very well improve your child’s comprehension over time and develop an appreciation of what she or he is reading.
