BOSCOMBE - HAVE YOUR SAY! Find out what people think about local issues

In this regular section we our asking for your thoughts on local issues. It’s a chance to share your feedback and see what others are saying. In our second poll we asked:

“If you were Mayor for the day, what changes would you make to the local area?” “I’d put something on the end of Boscombe Pier, it’s so empty and boring as it stands. Needs something to bring people down.” Leon K “I would actually like to see the role of mayor changed so it’s more useful. Currently it’s supposed to be a "public relations officer" for the town and they all appear very wishy-washy. Get someone younger in place with some real power to do something locally.” Kevin “I would nick as many pens from the Town Hall as possible :-)” Anthony “Sort out the high street, more police to keep the wrong sort of people out. Close the shops selling robbed stuff and open some shops selling better quality clothes. Shame Burtons closed.” Oliver The responses shown here are a representative selection of comments submitted by email, on our Facebook page and comments from the public. They do not represent the views of the Magazine or Bournemouth Publishing.

9

“I think we would benefit from an indoor soft play area for children to use in inclement weather, this would also attract holidaying families and locals to the town.” Des, Donna & Val “I would hunt down everyone involved with the IMAX disaster and hold them to account. Did anyone actually ever get fired for that? Not convinced the ‘space’ left now is all that either.” Derek “Make the car parks free on market days”. Jilly “I’d do something to fill up empty shops - especially the Royal Arcade, it’s sad to see it dying.” Anon “Give funding to local groups that do things in the community.” Harriot Edward C. Have Your Say - Next Edition The council recently spent £76,000 on a basic sign that appears on a bridge over the A338 as you enter Bournemouth. For our next edition we’re asking: “Do you like the new sign?” and “What would you spend £76,000 on locally?” Submit your answers by email to editor@boscombe.info

ADVICE MATTERS

Boscombe Independent Advice Centre Makes It Happen!

Brand new and offering free advice on any issue, the Boscombe Independent Advice Centre (BIAC) is a fantastic service for people who live and or work in Boscombe or Springbourne. Situated in the Bourne Spring Centre in St. Mary’s Road in Springbourne, BIAC is a charity helping with legal issues and information. This includes everything from housing, benefits, family matters, your work, debt and much more. We spoke to Chief Executive Martin Broad who said “BIAC has a very experienced team of both paid and volunteer staff who are here to listen and help anyone. Our strapline is ‘Advice Matters - We make it happen’, something about which we are really proud.” The friendly, helpful staff will listen and assess your needs, offering appointments or even passing you onto a relevant agency or organisation who can deal with you even more efficiently and effectively. We spoke to recent client Leah who told us about her experiences with BIAC, “I’ve been so impressed and thrilled with the service I received so quickly. As I was unable to visit the centre, they offered me personal advice on the phone and made it clear which direction I should go next.” If you need guidance, help or advice, be sure to pop in and speak to the staff at BIAC. The drop-in times are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings 10am-1pm and Wednesday afternoons 4.30pm-7.30pm. BOSCOMBE’S MUSIC SCENE Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide

About Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our regular local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Can you believe it! Last time I wrote this column we were fast approaching one of the best summers on record, filled with BBQs, festivals and the return of the Rolling Stones. However by the time you will be reading this, Summer will be over and Autumn will be closing in. Fear not however because there are many amazing events coming up in Bournemouth and especially Boscombe in the coming months to make you forget the Autumn Blues. One of the most eagerly anticipated of these events is the Boscombe Community Fair held at Kings Park from the 13-15th September. The event boasts an array of local stalls, music workshops, food and drink from Boscanova café and of course two stages of the best live music in the town. Playing this year are Mischa and his merry men, The Jack Ratts, myself, Chris Woodford, Freefall Collective, festival favourites the Mother Ukers and Bournemouth unplugged winner Andy Stock. This is an amazing event and great value for money. If you want the festival vibe to continue into the Autumn then this is the event for you. See page 17 for more details. If buying records is your thing then you have to check out Rose Red Records in the Royal Arcade in Boscombe. This is an amazing little store that is dedicated to customer satisfaction with a massive array of vinyl. More importantly however is that they are avid supporters of local music and put on amazing intimate shows in the basement of their store. I massively recommend dropping in and checking out their events, and the collection of vinyl they have on offer.

13

www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic

Back to local gigs, at The Cellar Bar at Chaplin’s there are some great free events to make sure you don’t miss this month. Shindig is taking place on the 7th September and involves an amazing evening of cow punk music. The vibes of the night will get every limb in your body moving to their fun grooves and will also include music from the one-man construction show, Surfin Dave and Absent Legends. The amazing Carolan Burke’s Shrufti Box and friends will be performing on the 3rd September. I was mesmerized by this beautiful sounding artist when I last saw her and I truly recommend it if you like your folk and Celtic music. On 9th September Joel Gregory is gracing the Cellar Bar. Joel performed at the 2012 Olympics and has also played on some huge stages Carolan Burke including the Cavern Club, Liverpool and O2 Academy London. Make sure you see him in such an intimate setting because he is going on to bigger things. At the O2 Academy on the 21st October Babyshambles and Pete Doherty are returning with their new album. Peter is one of the most charismatic front men in the world and definitely worth seeing in your local venue, and by the sounds of the recent single releases, the album is going to be a corker. Also, don’t Babyshambles miss Beth Johnstone at Urban Reef on 30th October, blending beautiful melodies in the mould of Laura Marling and PJ Harvey, a fantastic prospect from the Bournemouth scene.

Aaron’s Top Five And finally, five other unmissable shows coming up across the area: 9 September : Joel Gregory @ Cellar Bar, Boscombe 10 October: Spector @ Sixty Million Postcards Bournemouth 19 October: Oxjam Festival, Multiple venues, Bournemouth 21 October: Babyshambles @ the O2 Academy, Boscombe 30 October: Beth Johnstone @ Urban Reef, Boscombe

Making the most of the town’s top locations the seafront, Lower Gardens and the town centre, as well as other unexpected places and spaces in Bournemouth, the multi-artform festival runs from the 20th September to the 12th October 2013, and offers more than 50 free and ticketed arts events. The opening weekend of 20-22nd September sees an exciting free outdoor celebration for all the family to launch the festival in real style. In addition, lots of events – including light installations, film screenings, live music and dance, street performance and a vintage market will take place in the town centre, lower gardens and seafront. Our top picks include special showings of Alfred Hitchcock’s early films restored by the British Film Institute, accompanied by live music from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Over the three weeks residents and visitors alike can expect all kinds of delights; including The Art of Visual Effects - an opportunity to take a behind-the scenes look at some of the world’s most spectacular visual effects created for award winning films and animations, such as Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter. This year there’s a distinct cinema and ‘live score’ element to the festival.

COMPUTERS

Are they the best tool for learning?

It’s true that children enjoy computer games and it seems like an easy and fun way to help them with maths and English. However, studies and our experience show that personal interaction is one of the most important elements in helping children learn. According to a study relating to computer use with over 1,000 children:

Edward & Connie

“You need to have other support structures in place to enable technology to be an effective learning tool outside of the classroom.” Computers, though helpful in education, will not meet all your child’s learning needs. Multiple factors are important for student achievement: • Parental and teacher support • Tutors who can motivate and challenge • Supplemental materials Technology is just a tool; the key is how it is used to support learning. Perhaps the most important quality is having a responsive tutor who is adaptable. Adaptability is the key when it comes to taking advantage of teachable moments or those fleeting times when a student locks on to something or expresses confusion. Adaptability is also the key when it comes to altering a lesson to meet the immediate needs of a student. NumberWorks’nWords utilizes tuition and computer technology tailored to each student’s individual needs. Call Connie or Edward on 01202 433673 to book a free assessment today.
