SCULPTURE TRAIL CHALLENGE

Wintake Pizzaaforstroll 2 and take in some art

Have you found all of the works of art on the Boscombe Arts Trail? As summer swiftly approaches, one of our favourite routes to enjoy is the Boscombe Arts Trail. Installed in 2010 it’s a free walk starting in Boscombe precinct, continuing down Sea Road and ending up at Boscombe Pier. There are seven distinct art installations along the way ranging from 'Verne', a 3m high helmeted octopus to 'Optic', a large marble captured by a park bench. One of our favourites is the very last piece called ‘'Murano', an extremely unique sculpture worth checking out! Dorset artist Andy Kirkby was chosen by a panel of arts professionals, local people and ward councillors to create the trail. The pieces reflect the ideas put forward by local residents of Sea Road and Undercliff Road, and the artist’s own distinctive approach to public art. The walk takes approximately 25 minutes and a great excuse to enjoy an ice cream at the end on Boscombe Pier!

LEARNING TO LEARN Maths Without Tears

with and Edward NumberWorks’nWords with Connie Connie and Edward fromfrom NumberWorks’nWords In our children’s efforts to learn, from memorising multiplication tables to evaluating the characters in “The Taming of The Shrew”, we sometimes forget that ultimately they need to learn how to learn. Every student is told to study. However, how often are they shown a way to study, to learn, and to take responsibility for their own learning? 1) Taking notes in class and while reading is essential to studying. But, the student must be able to focus on what is important. Exploring different approaches to note taking like mind maps, using highlighters, note cards, diagrams and pictures will help. Students must be shown what is important and this requires reviewing their notes with them so they improve. 2) We sometimes assume that students know how to study. You can help them study by setting aside time, quizzing them on information in their notes, helping them set up study groups, reviewing material as a game, helping them create mnemonics and test questions. 3) Learning versus memorising. Actors must recall pages and pages of scripts. A university-based psychologist, Helga Noice, has studied actors’ memorisation techniques for decades. Interestingly, they don’t memorise lines in a traditional way. She found that they read the script over and over, looking for a chain that links one event in a play to another and clues, which define characters, situations and relationships. And words are linked to body movements. Memorisation is organic rather than forced. This technique can be used to study and to promote deeper learning and understanding. 4) Quizzing students over and over elicits a “testing effect”. This increases retention of facts and information by about 50% over other study methods. This can be improved by quizzing a student immediately after she has learned something. 5) Listen to your child. How does he learn? What areas does she think require more work? What study process was successful in the past? What was unsuccessful? You may be surprised by how much your child knows about what does and does not work. This helps give your child control, fostering responsibility.

NATIONAL SMILE MONTH

Winkeep Pizza those for 2 pearlies white

Beechwood Dental Practice in Boscombe is delighted to support National Smile Month, the UK’s largest oral health campaign, from May 20 – June 20. At its heart are three key messages: • Brush your teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day using fluoride toothpaste • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks • Visit the dentist regularly, as often as we recommend Sound simple? You’d think so, but 25 per cent of adults don’t brush twice a day, including a third of men, and people who only brush once a day are a third more likely to develop tooth decay. Visiting the dentist annually reduces the risk of tooth decay by 60 per cent, so call 01202 397 074 today to book an appointment!

Looking after your smile Beechwood Dental is a long-established family practice with a first class reputation. Our genuinely friendly team knows our patients, their families - and their mouths - very well.
