THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF BOSCOMBE A look back at the festival embracing our history, culture and diversity
In October the Bournemouth Coastal BID, in association with the Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival, presented a nine day extravaganza of festival fun, truly embracing our history, culture and diversity. Throughout the week there were loads of brilliant things to do and see, events to get involved in, exhibitions to marvel at, all culminating in a weekend of excitement at the Grand Finale on 12th and 13th October. There was dazzling street entertainment – a multitude of pop-up galleries – a mesmerising Art Trail from Boscombe Crescent to Pokesdown Green – splendid exhibitions, and spectacular performances of every kind. From street culture to fine art, from the gorgeous Royal Arcade to the stately Shelley Manor, along the high street and lanes of Boscombe, showcased live art, poetry, music and dance, quirky restaurants and cafés served food of the world as well as tasty local treats at the Thai Market and world food hall in the Sovereign Shopping Centre. It was a tremendous week for the Boscombe creative community, bringing together a whole host of local artists and entertainers, building a strong network for future events. Artists came from near and far to attend and be part of the event. It was great to see Boscombe come alive with a buzzing creative atmosphere. Ray McGlynn, manager of the Sovereign Centre , commented, “The Great Exhibition of Boscombe is a fantastic celebration of the culture, heritage and diversity that Boscombe has on offer. We are delighted to be involved and to be hosting such an array of events here in the Centre which are sure to tantalize all the senses of those who visit!” Opposite is a small selection of photos from the event. ALL ABOUT CRUMBS
a unique cafe and catering service in Boscombe
Crumbs is a unique cafe, charity and catering service situated at 522 Christchurch Road in the heart of Boscombe. Founded in 1997 by Anne Gardner, Crumbs Cafe provides home-made tasty food, in a modern light and airy surrounding. Freshly ground coffee, hot and cold snacks, all day breakfast, and a delicious array of home baked cakes and tray-bakes are just some of the tempting items on offer. We spoke to manager Leanne who explained, “All our food is prepared and cooked by our team of trainees under the expert supervision of our experienced and skilled staff team. We’re really proud of our Cafe and trainees who make it all happen.” As well as the Cafe, Crumbs also offer a doorstep sandwich delivery service, SnakPaks for businesses and finger buffets for any occasion. But it doesn’t stop there. Crumbs’ person centred training programme works to benefit each individual, no matter what their disability. Based in a working catering environment, trainees also gain vital life skills such as improved communication, confidence, timekeeping, following instruction and experience of working as a team. Trainees are equipped with all kinds of catering and hospitality skills, learning how to cook, take orders and serve customers, with the opportunity to complete vocational qualifications and courses too. Leanne explained, “We also offer pre-employment one-to-one support when our trainees venture into the wider community.” All of which adds up to a unique recipe for helping disadvantage people lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Crumbs are an incredible service and real asset to our community. They rely on their customers so be sure to stop by the Cafe and enjoy their exceptionally tasty, excellent value for money food. BOSCOMBE’S MUSIC SCENE Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide
About Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our regular local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013
I am probably not the only one to feel a little down as this years amazing summer drew to a close. This year brought the warmest summer for years, AFC Bournemouth winning promotion to the almighty championship, Rolling Stones and Arctic Monkeys storming Glastonbury and a full range of brilliant sun kissed activities to the town of Bournemouth. However there is no reason to be down because for music the fun has only just started as we approach Christmas and New Year. As usual the Cellar Bar at Chaplin’s are hotting up for an exciting festive season. Highlights for me include the Shindig night on the 7th December. This event is becoming one of the most talked about in Bournemouth and for good reason, as this is the premier place to put on your dancing shoes and dance until your heart is content. The acts are handpicked by Ski Daddle from local cow punk heroes Kentucky Fight Club and never dissapoint. Playing the event this time are Pussycat and the Dirty Johnsons. Make sure to put it on your calendar because this gig is always guaranteed fun and it is not to be missed. The Cellar Bar is a quite brilliant place that is the epicenter of the musicians in Bournemouth and it really is worth getting down any night of the week to check out what is going on. Most of what occurs is due to a fantastic man who has put much effort into supporting local music for years. His name is Conrad Barr and he has helped and influenced many artists in Bournemouth and he still runs two fantastic nights in the shape of Solid

Air (on a Monday and Thursday) and Forbidden Planet. These nights are always extremely well structured and great fun and are definitely worth checking out seeing as the likes of Saturday Sun, The Yoofs, Hazey and the J’s and Vlad have all been regular guests whom national and local media are getting excited about. The Yoofs are playing Cellar Bar on Boxing Day and are putting the finishing touches on their album. They have a beautifully melodically colourful sound piercing through scuzzy guitars, it is easy to see why national media are getting excited. I recommend seeing them because they are going to be a big deal soon. The O2 Academy are treating us to some real legends in December. I’m sure anybody that enjoyed the Madchester scene of ‘89 will know the Happy Mondays who are playing on December the 6th. They are in a rich vein of form and will be great fun. Another highlight are Tenacious D the day after. Again they need no introduction, as they are a truly massive act, which again highlights the beauty of a venue like the O2 in giving our town the opportunity to see such flagship acts. Finally I hope you all have an amazing Christmas and a happy new year, here is to another fantastic year for music in 2014.

Helping people in their homes
Samantha Acton has been the owner of Domestic Angels for over a decade. The Angels provide cleaning and home help services to the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch areas. From weekly cleaning to spring-cleans, ironing to general housework, they’ll take the work off your hands and a load off your mind. Their home help service provides a friendly pair of hands for those requiring extra attention. Daily visits help with meals, cleaning and shopping, but above all they provide a trusted friendly face. Gaynor Tilley of Southbourne told us of her experience with Domestic Angels, "I hired a cleaner from Domestic Angels over 4 years ago and throughout that time Samantha has always provided great staff who do a thorough job. Since then the way Samantha also dealt with a delicate family situation in caring for an elderly family member highlighted the 'personable' side to this business. I know I can trust Domestic Angels and Samantha to do a great job every week." If you would like to talk about how Domestic Angels could help you in your home, call Samantha on 01202 267350.

DO WE REALLY NEED DENTAL CHECK-UPS
every 6 months?
We all have a tendency to be reactive when it comes to problems. We don’t see a problem until it has occurred and more often than not the solution is more complicated after the “horse has bolted” than a timely preventative measure would have been. Routine dental check-ups may seem pointless as there is, on most occasions, nothing to report and it's all over in 10 minutes. At Shelley Manor Dental the check up fee is £30 (with x-rays taken every 2 years @ £20). If you have a one-off dental check-up and nothing is found, it may seem a waste of time? However if you take a longer term view of regular check-ups, for example over a 4 year period the dentist may pick up a carious lesion (i.e. an early cavity) that could be treated with a small filling. Most early lesions do not cause symptoms. For example, let’s say a lower first molar (the first adult molar to come through when you are 6-7 years old and therefore the tooth most commonly needing a filling) develops a small lesion. If not picked up in a timely fashion that early cavity may progress quickly to involve the tooth nerve and this often results in root canal treatment (£350). Most root canal filled teeth are weak, in which case it would also need to be crowned (£400).
Shelle
In cost terms compare the preventative approach against the reactive one. Preventative approach (over 4 years) 8 check-ups (£240) 2 sets of x-rays (£40) small white filling (£85) Total = £365
Reactive Approach Emergency Appointment (£50) Root Canal Treatment (£350) Basic Crown (£400) Total = £800
De
NOW
This example illustrates that ‘reactive’ treatment (i.e. seeing a dentist when you are in pain) is far costlier than a preventative approach. In fact you would be paying more than double, and despite your dentist's best efforts the root-filled tooth with an artificial shell (i.e. crown) on top will not last as long than if it had a small white filling. That’s not counting the pain experienced with a tooth needing a root filling and possibly lost days at work for emergency appointments. (30 mi So next time you are looking at your dentist's ceiling having a check-up appoint and wondering is it all worth it, just remember to take a long term view! SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S MATHS LEARNING First – identify the problem
“Every child can pass maths.”
-- Mark McCourt, outspoken maths educator Knowing how to solve equations, interpret graphs and charts or find an unknown side or angle in a triangle has practical implications in Edward & Connie areas as diverse as psychology to construction apprenticeships. There is no reason why students preparing to take GCSE maths should not meet these challenges. However, last year 38 percent of students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland did not gain a minimum C grade in GCSE maths or as McCourt notes – “after 1,600 hours of instruction.” Why teaching is important to support learning There are over 40,000 educational apps available for PCs and tablets. A lot of the maths apps are drills. Though drills, especially for multiplication tables, are important, they can be mind-numbingly boring. Our minds work best when we interact with other people. One type of relationship that works exceptionally well for deeper learning and education is the “master/mentor-apprentice relationship”. Students often feel intimidated by the complexity and difficulty of learning a concept in maths. The mentor-tutor can break down the intricacy of the learning task. The best way to retain knowledge is for students to move ahead a little, come back a little to review old material, and then move forward a bit with achievable challenges. This is how tutoring should work: • Making adjustments as a student learns is paramount to his or her education. It is best accomplished by a mentor who has not just developed subject skill, but is a master educator • The tutor-mentor can keep long-term goals in mind while not allowing a student’s confidence to collapse • Real-time feedback is important in building confidence. In this relationship, the student can ask questions and request changes without fear • Extra-tuition is an investment in your child’s future
