It doesn’t seem 5 minutes since we started work on the Boscombe Magazine but here we are at edition 6 and the good news is we’ve expanded an extra 8 pages to 40 pages. We have a new local music scene column, a vox pop style ‘Have Your Say’ section and lots more. In this edition we have news of a major new musical making a local debut, our guide on things to do this summer, we meet up with the team at ‘House Cafe’ and have a competition to win a family day out at the Knight and Damsel Academy at Corfe Castle. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our advertisers and supporters and welcome Star Radio Cars as our new sponsor for the centre page map. Tom Faull, Editor CONTENTS

Staff will be hosting events to demonstrate what it was like to shop, with butter slapping, colleagues dressed in old uniforms, sampling and street entertainment. There will also be competitions inviting you to guess the year of some of the original products, and a history board showing how Boscombe and Sainsbury’s has changed over the decade, including archive film and photographs. BOSCOMBE - HAVE YOUR SAY! Find out what people think about local issues
In a new regular section we will be asking for your thoughts on local issues. It’s a chance to share your feedback and see what others are saying. In our first poll we asked:
“What new shop, service or amenity would you like to see in Boscombe?” “I would love both Boscombe and Pokesdown to have a decent greengrocer. I do understand that it can be difficult for greengrocers to make a living in the face of supermarket competition. ” Christine B. “T.J. Hughes could be converted into a large indoor market and the twice weekly market could compliment this. With built in / lockable units, cafes, arts and crafts, fruit and veg etc. and this could be open all week. Local people who cannot afford a whole shop but wish to sell / trade could be offered reduced rents and business rates. ” John B. “I love to see the Land Train in Boscombe, it would look even better with a little station in the precinct.” Timothy W. “In an ideal world a venue in the precinct in Boscombe that opens in the evening for dancing, not a disco somewhere they offer 1940’s nights, jazz nights, soul nights etc. up to midnight. Open during the day as a cafe.” Debbie P. The responses shown here are a representative selection of comments submitted by email, on our Facebook page and comments from the public. They do not represent the views of the Magazine or Bournemouth Publishing.
9 “We would benefit from an indoor soft play area for children to use in inclement weather, this would also attract holidaying families and locals to the town.” Des L. “I want to see free parking. I think it's an absolute joke that the council encourage out of town shopping, make parking at places like Castlepoint free, and then scratch their heads as to why footfall has declined in places like Boscombe (and the town centre). The Council often make excuses like it's their main source of income or ‘the car parking price hasn't been raised for three years’ but it's just a deflection. The price has been too high for three years!”
“Let’s see an electronics shop like Maplins.”
Mike N.
Paul R. “I would like to see a quality butcher arrive in Pokesdown. We have a number of independent greengrocers nearby and I feel a butcher offering a good selection of meats and dairy products would offer the local community enough not to have to go to one of the nearby supermarkets.” Edward C. “M&S please! No more ‘pound’ or charity shops, more high street names e.g. Next, Argos (really miss it), Clarks shoes, Robert Dyas or similar.” Janet Question for the next edition “If you were Mayor for the day, what changes would you make to the local area?” Submit your answers by email to editor@boscombe.info

OPEN HOUSE DINING New cafe diner in the Royal Arcade
House Cafe Diner is a brand new restaurant that has replaced Planters, situated in the Royal Arcade in Boscombe. House is a family run business with three generations all working together to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. All meals are cooked in-house (pun intended!) and they use only the freshest of ingredients, sourced from local suppliers and butchers. We spoke to Julie who told us “we’re really proud and strongly believe as a family that everyone deserves good quality, honest food and drink and at affordable prices”. The trained front of house staff have worked in a variety of prestigious locations across the UK, striving on providing a welcoming atmosphere. The head chef has over 10 years of catering experience including establishments of a two Rosette standard. Their Fair Trade coffee is sourced from the Monte Sion Rainforest and grounded from bean to cup, providing the very best taste. We also particularly liked their ‘create your own breakfast’ with slow roasted tomatoes and mushrooms. Julie told us the current most popular dish is their ‘Our House” White Bait’, battered and fried fish served whole with a saffron aioli. “We present the White Bait on a board in a cone which customers absolutely love”. Also on the menu includes sandwiches made to order, American Diner Breakfast and even a Twix milkshake! Open 7 days a week 10am - 5pm and 11am - 3pm on Sundays during the summer, it’s a fantastic place to eat, drink and socialise. Why not pop down for a bite to eat and say hello to Julie, Simon, Anne and the staff at House.

BOSCOMBE’S MUSIC SCENE Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide
Introducing Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our new local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Who better to bring us all the latest news, upcoming gig and artist info from the local area! Aaron’s released his first album this year entitled ‘The Last Dance To The Carousel’. It follows the concept of living in Bournemouth during the technological revolution. Aaron is next playing at the Buffalo Bar, 23 Woodend Road in Winton, on July 11th or you can simply follow him on Facebook at www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic
“Everybody wants to be entertained” were the words that came from the famous lips of Mick Jagger in 1971 and entertained you shall be! Did you know, in our local area there are thriving pubs, clubs and music venues where you could catch the very next Jagger or Lennon? My name is Aaron Gregory and I will be bringing you smack up to date with the unmissable shows and acts that are coming to your local area every month. Boscombe, to any musician in Bournemouth, has a special place in the heart. This is mainly down to the community venue that is the joint bar/restaurant and gig venue Chaplin’s and The Cellar Bar. Chaplin’s won community bar of the year in 2012 and with good reason. It is friendly, reasonably priced, the décor is fantastic and it’s also the root of the Bournemouth music scene.
13 Anybody who is anybody within the scene has played at Chaplin’s - the venue that has staged legendary shows from the likes of Saturday Sun, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and Yoofs amongst others. So there hasn’t been a better time to get down to Chaplin’s and see what all the fuss is about. There is live music every night of the week with the Cellar Bar opening up for bands on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Chris Woodford is playing the Cellar Bar on 4th August and also plays the first Sunday of every month. He is a former winner of Bournemouth Unplugged and is a tranquil guitarist who makes the guitar sound like the most beautiful thing on earth. Opposite the train station at Pokesdown you’ll find The Seabournes and they also have a great selection of live music every Saturday night. And for all the fans of Space Rock (a hybrid of hard-rock and acid-rock so says Wikipedia!) you can see Hawkwind perform ‘Warrior On The Edge Of Time’ at the O2 Academy on 23 August. Chaplin's & The Cellar Bar 529 Christchurch Rd 01202 251953
The Seabournes 915 Christchurch Rd 01202 427762
O2 Academy 570 Christchurch Rd 01202 399922
Aaron’s Top Five And finally, 5 other unmissable shows coming up across the area: 12 July : Icandi @ The Grove Tavern, Southbourne 31 July: Daryl Ford Trio @ Centre Stage, Westbourne 15 August: Whales in Cubicles and Die Die Die @ Sixty Million Postcards 23 August: Hawkwind @ 02 Academy, Boscombe 20 September: Joe Bonamassa @ The BIC, Bournemouth

NEW MUSICAL DEBUTS IN BOURNEMOUTH Could YOU be Patrick Brady?
¡No Pasarán! is an exciting new musical, with an original story, debuting this October in Bournemouth. We met up with Roy Gaynor, the minstrel behind the story, music and lyrics of ¡No Pasarán! Roy started by briefly explaining the main story, “Set during the Spanish Civil War of 1936 - 1939, it’s a story of love, friendship and selflessness and the heroism of the Spanish people on both sides and of the volunteers of the International Brigades who went to Spain to fight fascism.” After an initial idea 20 years ago, Roy has focused on the project in the last 4 years and has worked with award winning Royal College of Music graduate Doug Gould on orchestration. There are almost 40 original songs in the show which unveils the compelling story over two and a half hours. The spectacle makes use of top of the range Barco digital cinema projectors for still and video scenery projections to help the audience see, hear and feel the story unfold. Roy explained the idea of the local premier is to invite investors and build interest with an eye on a West End production. Rehearsals are underway but a leading man is needed to head up a great cast so are you Patrick Brady? If you are a tenor (if you are unsure about what voice you have but can sing those key songs from Les Mis really well) then you could be Patrick! Contact Roy via email on nopasaranmusical@gmail.com to arrange an audition. The October 2013 production of ¡No Pasarán! is a world premier and is directed by Margaret Coltman, a veteran of almost 100 productions in London and No Pasarán means ‘They around the UK. Shall not Pass’ and
was a defiant slogan used during the civil war by the people of Madrid as they defended the city against Franco's military uprising.
Tickets are on sale now for the premier being held at the De La Salle Theatre in Southbourne. All profits from this run are going to The Brain Tumour Charity.
Visit www.no-pasaran-musical.com to find out more and book tickets.

SUMMER HOLIDAYSTears Maths Without
The children forget everything they’ve learned at school... withtime Connie and Edward from NumberWorks’nWords
...or maybe not—there are lots of fun ways to keep children engaged, curious and thinking during the summer. Students who read during the summer do better in school in the autumn and reading just 5 books over the summer can prevent academic loss. Let children choose Edward & Connie their own books, even if you think the books are not challenging enough; they need to have some choice and like what they read. You can also suggest more challenging books to move on to or read together. Ways to encourage reading 1. Create a system of rewards (movie, out-door activity, money towards a coveted game or special activity) for reading. 2. Join the Bournemouth Library’s summer reading programme. 3. Create a family reading hour. 4. Make a graph of reading time and books read with daily entries. You may be surprised how this encourages reading by watching it grow. 5. You could take turns reading aloud but even if children prefer to have you read to them, they are still learning to listen and comprehend—you can talk about what is happening in the story to see if they understand. Reading aloud also enriches their vocabulary—they are hearing words they might not be able to read yet but learning about them in the context of a story. Your local library and bookseller are great resources for book suggestions. They can recommend books for your child who is interested in cars, fairies, dinosaurs and more. For more book ideas, contact us at bournemouth@numberworks.com It is never too late to help struggling readers – 19 studies show that accelerating reading growth in later years may be more challenging than in the earlier years, but that it isn't too late to help struggling readers. Visit our Facebook page during the summer for other suggestions to make learning fun. And remember, time to play and re-charge is important too! Visit: www.facebook.com/NumberWorksnWordsBournemouth
