BOSCOMBE NEWS & EVENTS
Local news from Boscombe, Pokesdown & Boscombe East
Amazon Trial Local Lockers in Boscombe The Sovereign Shopping Centre is one of the first retail centres in the UK to pioneer a new shopping scheme allowing customers to receive online orders from amazon.co.uk to secure lockers. The aim of the lockers are to bridge the gap between online retail and the high street, while improving the retail experience for visitors to the Sovereign Shopping Centre by allowing customers to have a parcel delivered to the lockers rather than at a home or business address. The lockers, which are secure and easily accessible, are located on the ground floor of the shopping centre by the lift area and car park entrance. Amazon customers have the option to choose a convenient locker delivery, with no additional charge, by choosing this as their delivery method at check-out. Once parcels are delivered to the lockers, customers receive an e-mail notification with a unique code. Others areas trialling the lockers include The Piazza in Paisley, Bramley Shopping Centre in Leeds and The Forum in Wallsend, Tyneside.
Poppy Appeal Appeal The Royal British Legion are in need of an Appeal Organiser for the Boscombe shopping area. This post entails setting up a stall and manning it for periods of the day and collecting donations for Poppies. If you are interested in getting invovled contact Ian Jarvis on 01258 480805

BOSCOMBE ARTS FAIR A new monthly arts event, open to all
Boscombe’s Royal Arcade was transformed into an Arts Fair exhibition space on Sunday 28 October 2012. Visitors were treated to eclectic mix of original artwork by local artists, including work by students from the Arts University College Bournemouth. The fair has been launched with support from the Council to enable the organisers, Tristan Ward from Flux Art Supplies and Keirone Capstack from Frog Bros Comics and Books, to launch the monthly exhibition. Kate Greenham, Boscombe Project Officer at Bournemouth Council, said: “The Arts Fair will be a fantastic opportunity for local artists to come and display and sell their work to the public. We are really pleased to support local businesses and artists to help get this initiative off the ground and this is part of our ongoing work to regenerate Boscombe. The Royal Arcade is the perfect backdrop for what we hope will be a really popular and successful regular event. It will complement and build upon the success of the monthly Boscombe Vintage Market also held in the Royal Arcade.” The Boscombe Arts Fair will return on the last Sunday of each month. The next two dates for your diary are: • 25th November • 23rd December

AWARD WINNING CHAPLIN’S Best Bar None and another Bloomin’ Award
Chaplin’s had a busy October, winning two awards in one week. It received the outstanding accolade of best pub in the UK in the ‘Best Bar None National Award Scheme’ at the House of Lords, coming first out of all the pubs entering the competition in 111 areas. The award celebrates best practice, and acknowledged Chaplin’s positive role in the community. Harry Seccombe, owner for the past five years, told us, “We strive to make an inviting and safe place for local people to come and meet, eat and enjoy local ales, fine wines and cocktails in a beautiful artistic environment. I think it’s great that a small independent venue won an award of this calibre.” The hidden gem that is Chaplin’s garden, known locally as the Hanging Gardens of Boscombe, won gold in ‘Bournemouth in Bloom’ for its colourful flowers and quirky layout. Vivien Hoffman, Harry’s fiancée and local artist who designs the bar and garden says, “We use recycled and reclaimed materials to create a truly unique venue on two floors that will stand the test of time. I love it when people discover us for the first time and say, ‘Wow, I’ve never seen anything like this.’ In these days of commercial chain pubs that look identical no matter which part of the country they happen to be in, we are doing something different. We are a real pub with a real heart, providing a haven for people who want to relax and be themselves in an inspirational setting.” Chaplin’s Cellar Bar puts on original live music, seven days a week, see listing opposite, and is open from 12 until late. So if you’ve driven or walked past but not been in before, give Chaplin’s a try, you’ll be assured of a good knight!

GOOD TIMES AND GOOD PLAY Welcome to the Good Play Café
If you have driven or walked down Seabourne Road recently you could not fail to notice the bright and bubbly new addition that appeared in April this year. The Good Play Café in Pokesdown, only a few minutes walk from the station, opened after extensive renovations on rundown Victorian shops in Seabourne Road. Harriet, the owner, has spent over £200,000 creating a bright, welcoming café and installed a four-metre-high play frame with a separate play area for younger children. As a mother herself, Harriet is keen to offer children aged 5 years and younger an enjoyable and interactive play environment. Harriet told us “I wanted somewhere safe and secure that parents could enjoy as well. It’s as important for the parents to have fun as much as the kids”. The café already has a welcoming ‘community feel’, with a selection of teas, milkshakes, homemade cakes, healthy lunches, free wifi and magazines. From 3pm during term time, under-eights are also allowed to use the play equipment, as well as all day during the school holidays and weekends. Visit www.thegoodplaycafe.co.uk for details and follow The Good Play Café on Facebook. The Good Play Café is at 128/130 Seabourne Road, Bournemouth BH5 2HZ. Email: hello@thegoodplaycafe.co.uk

WORKPLACE MEDIATION What’s that all about then?
We spoke to Mandy Fitzmaurice and Leanne Pick from the Change Partner Consultancy to find out all about workplace mediation. What is Workplace Mediation? Mediation is a process whereby a trained mediator helps people who don't see eye to eye with each other to negotiate and sort out their differences as quickly as possible. Can anyone be a Mediator? Try and use a trusted, independent mediator wherever possible – parties need to be able to trust there isn’t any bias. Don't rule out options The aim is to help the parties agree a way forward for themselves, try hard not to rule out any options or impose your own solutions, but work hard to let parties reach their own outcomes. Don't lose heart if there isn’t an immediate solution Tensions will have been running very high and they may well need some time to reflect and accept that progress has been made - so be patient. OK, but does it really work? 80% of all cases that enter mediation reach a positive outcome, contrast this to the alternative, which usually involves a lengthy grievance process, appeals and tribunal claims - a lot of time, money and heart-ache all round. So, if you have a difficult or tricky situation with some of your employees, have a think about whether mediation might help to resolve the conflict and get everyone back on an even keel. If you think it's worth a try but would like some initial help, contact Mandy or Leanne on 01202 377270 to get the ball rolling.
