SUMMER

Activity GUIDE

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle is back again with this year’s edition of the summer activity guide to help you get a head start on planning your kiddo’s summer moments. With yet another summer affected by the pandemic, many if not all of these camps are implementing COVID prevention protocols to keep campers safe this year. Many of these camps are also providing scholarships to keep costs down and kids actively engaged. Summer is approaching fast, and with winter still lingering, summer camps may be the last thing on your

mind. Let this guide remind you summer is just around the corner, and it’s time to get your spots at summer camps happening in Bozeman, and all around the state. You don’t want to miss out on giving your kids a summer they’ll never forget. Getting outside is the easy part, but staying entertained? Not so much. The good news is that many of these camps allow participants to stay busy, anywhere from a couple of hours, to the whole day, or even weeks at a time thanks to the overnight camps being offered

this year. If you’re eager to keep your kids busy and having fun this summer, this is the guide for you. There’s room for your children to attend science exploration camps or outdoor adventures. This year’s camps have something for everyone. Get your kids active with the many sports and dance camps offered, or showcase their artistic and creative talents with art, acting, and music camps! This guide will help you to navigate the best fit for your little ones. With children spending more and more time on their mobile devices

and tablets, it is important now more than ever to spend more time outdoors. According to Forbes magazine, a study conducted by the University of Columbia demonstrated that children who spend more time outdoors are more likely to “cherish and protect” nature when they become young adults. On average, kids spend about seven hours a day in front of a screen. Whether that’s a phone, tablet or computer it is time that could be better spent outdoors. The benefits of children spending more time outdoors are vast, from its

obvious health benefits to social skill building, it is imperative for children to spend more time outdoors to set them up for a successful future. According to Harvard Health Publishing, exposure to sun and vitamin D are important for children to aid in bone development and give their immune system a boost. They also say that spending more time outdoors can be a great help to a child’s social and critical thinking skills. Utilizing those critical thinking skills can be accomplished at camp. Children will communicate and problem-solve with each other, unknowingly teaching themselves valuable life lessons they’ll utilize time and time again. In these interactions your child will be able to try new things and build a sense

of confidence. Going to camp and attempting to make friends is a risk within itself for kids, without taking these small risks they’ll never be able to prove to themselves that they in fact can do it. So, what better way to give your child a life lesson than allowing them time to be creative and socialize with other children at camp this summer? It’s important to let kids be kids. With our 2022 Summer Activity Guide we can help you to find the right fit for your little one to do exactly that, to let them be themselves and be a kid. Giving your child the gift of a summer camp experience will give them memories, stories, and valuable lessons they’ll keep forever.

SUMMER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2022

OUTDOOR Summer There’s no better time to enjoy the outdoors than Montana’s summer time. These camps are here to do just that. Not only will campers get to experience fresh air and the beauty of nature, these camps are here to engage all of that and more. With music classes, science courses, and interactive learning, your camper can have fun while connecting with the great outdoors. An article by Great Outdoors Colorado says that being outside for just 20 minutes a day can reduce kids’ stress and increase focus and attention. RAVENWOOD OUTDOOR LEARNING CENTER is all about healthy kids, families, and communities. Their mission is to “cultivate health, passion for learning, and stewardship of ecological and human communities through nature-based mentoring of youth, families, and adults” in the communities they serve. Ravenwood founders Laura Strong and Brett Holmquist “have deep roots in outdoor mentoring. Both grew up with expansive back yards in the big, wide country of Montana. As young professionals in Yellowstone doing biological research and conducting education programs for youth, the couple witnessed a fundamental lack of nature connection among many of the young people they encountered. For many kids, these programs had been their first serious outdoor adventures, even among those who grew up in Montana! Laura and Brett also witnessed a real thirst for learning and a noticeable shift in awareness and appreciation among their students when they were making connections on the land. They saw the trend of what is now called “nature deficit disorder” emerging, with kids spending less and less time exploring and learning outdoors and more and more time plugged into electronic media. They decided to meld their various talents in the science and education fields to do

something about it—and the inspiration to create Ravenwood was born.” More information about Ravenwood Outdoor Learning Center can be found on their website at https://ravenwoodolc.org/ourmission-values-story/ or by calling (406) 260-8620. CAMP CONNECT is a new summer day camp through Ravenwood Outdoor Learning Center. Their goal is connecting campers to nature! During this camp adventure, kids will build forts in nature, catch fish, eat fresh berries, and play games at Trumbull Canyon Camp. They’re here to help your camper make new friends and develop a relationship with nature. Based in Whitefish, this day camp is available August 1st-2nd, 8th-9th, and 15th-16th for campers aged 7-11. In addition to Camp Connect, Ravenwood is offering a Music and Nature camp, for ages 8-14 years old. While the camp dates are to be determined, this is a Monday through Friday day-camp from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. teaching campers to play the ukulele, percussion instruments, and a strings course. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to participate. Not only will campers learn to play musical instruments, they will also be immersed in group activities, play games, build crafts, engage in group stories, all while connecting to nature. Campers will need to provide their own instruments with the exception of the percussion section. Scholarships are available for this camp. Keep an eye out for upcoming dates that will be posted on their website. WILDERNESS KIDS CLUB is designed to teach your camper valuable life skills through the exploration of nature. This Ravenwood Outdoor Learning Center camp holds three sessions for kids 6-12 years old. Session one is from June 20th to July 12th. Session two runs from June 22nd to July 14th. Campers will get to learn fire making and

tending skills, basketry, wood working, animal and bird tracking, and group communication skills. This popular camp is based in Kalispell, MT, and is filling up fast. Scholarships for this camp are available. Check out more details and sign-up options for all three camps by visiting Ravenwood’s website at https:// ravenwoodolc.org/ , or by calling (406) 260-8620. MONTANA CONSERVATION CORPS YOUTH CREWS goal is to inspire young people through hands on conservation service to be “leaders, stewards of the land, and engaged citizens who improve their communities.” Their hands-on approach yields challenging conservation projects to build confidence and strengthen communication skills. This expedition is great for teens who enjoy physical, rewarding, and skill building challenges. Montana Conservation Corps Youth Crews has a two and four week long program from June to August for Montana highschoolers. Participants can expect to gain 72+ volunteer hours, leadership, technical, and communication skills, and build new relationships. Participants must be Montana residents to apply. For more information on camps and Montana Conservation Corps Youth Crews, visit https://www.mtcorps.org/joinmcc/youth/ or call (406) 586-4475. Montana Outdoor Science School (MOSS) has a mission to “inspire curiosity, awareness, and understanding nature and science through quality educational experiences.” Their vision is to connect Montanans with nature, to value and understand natural sciences. The MOSS founders shared a vision that “lives are enriched when we have a greater understanding of our natural surroundings. Today, MOSS serves more than 4,500 students each year through year-round courses for all ages and backgrounds including outreach programs to 44 schools; 10 weeks of

summer camps for 500 students, and free family festivals that celebrate our natural resources.” Each summer program offers a different natural science topic, from climate science to backpacking, water science and insects & critters. Each camper can expect a hands-on experience with nature, learning all about various ecosystems, habitats, insects, minerals, and wildlife. Week-long camps start June 13th, with the last camp starting August 22nd. Camps are offered for participants in kindergarten, first through second grade, third through fifth grade, and sixth through eighth. For more information visit http://www.outdoorscience.org/ or call (406) 582-0526. MONTANA LEARNING CENTER (MCL) is Montana’s science camp for kids. Museums

Summertime is a chance for kids to discover and explore all types of different surroundings. It’s looking for treasures by the river, finding new insects to capture and identify, and inspecting funny looking plants and flowers in a nearby field. It’s for discovering interests and diving into a plethora of educational rabbit holes. Local museums are here to serve and engage children of all ages and interests. Their programs and interactive learning lessons bring wonder and excitement to your child’s summertime. In addition to the summer programs offered, all

museums are open to the public. This summer, you can enjoy a day trip to the many museums Bozeman has to offer.

MUSEUM OF THE ROCKIES (MOR) is a non-profit organization recognized as a world-class cultural and natural history museum and research facility. MOR features an extensive collection of dinosaur fossils, natural history exhibits, planetarium shows, and educational programs. MOR’s mission is to inspire “life-long learning in science, history, culture, and art; advance

CAMPS

SUMMER ACTIVIT Y GUIDE 2022 With activities and opportunities ranging from tag and four-square, to bowling and martial arts, your child is guaranteed to learn something new with Cunningham Martial Arts or Bozeman Sports Camp. Both teach valuable life lessons that transcend sports. These organizations will teach your children to be competitive, but also how to be compassionate. Respect and comradery are very important to any competition and your children will be able to get their energy out while interacting with other kids and learning the whole way through. Participating in team sports provides a sense of togetherness that is hard to get elsewhere at a young age. Working together with a common goal can teach your kids so much about teamwork, compassion, and work ethic. These characteristics are ones that last a lifetime, just like the memories they’ll have with them too.

The hot pavement, cool grass, the arid infield of a little league diamond, paired with oranges, watermelon slices and popsicles are the memories that will stick with campers well after the day of sport is over. The in between time spent chatting with friends, laughing with counselors and learning valuable lessons from coaches is important as well. Sports camps provide a great sense of structure and through counselors and organizers who can be a great source of guidance too. For a child to build a connection with a coach or counselor can be a remarkable relationship in a child’s life. It is important for children to have mentors outside of the home they can look up to, and feel they are being seen and heard. Incorporating sports into your child’s routine has many benefits beyond exercise and a daily dose

of blowing off steam. Participating in sports increases motor skills, introduces friendships, and builds confidence. An article by Better Health suggests that physically active children “are more likely to develop into physically active adults.” Other benefits include improved coordination and balance, improved social skills, and improved personal skills such as cooperation and leadership.

Instructors provide class structure while utilizing positive reinforcement to help support your child’s mental and physical development. There are three programs offered which depend on the age range of your child. The Dragons program is for ages six to eight.

CUNNINGHAM’S MARTIAL ARTS values teaching kids strong life skills while creating excitement around physical fitness and having fun! Their mission is to build confidence, focusing on discipline, respect, self-control, perseverance, and goal setting. Cunningham’s Martial Arts mission is “built upon improving the lives of families in our community through giving back, teaching strong life lessons, and preparing people so they never become a victim.”

This class gives kids a headstart on focus, courtesy, and respect, while also focusing on coordination. The Juniors are for kids aged eight to thirteen.

The first session is from June 13th to July 7th, and the second is from July 18th to August 11th. Grades 1st through 2nd have a half-day program from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. All of their camps run from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Financial assistance is available. It is also important to note that all counselors are fully CPR and first aid certified. Our activities and trips are intentionally planned to promote physical, cognitive, and emotional/social development and provide them with memorable experiences and friendships that last a lifetime.” The camp offers many

activities and field trips for campers, all of which cater to learning as well. These two age groups cost $190 per week for members, and $245 per week for non-members.
