About our Waters................................ 8
The residents and business owners of Cuyuna Lakes invite you to experience all that our unique destination has to offer. This is home to Crosby, Ironton, Deerwood, Cuyuna, Trommald, Emily, Riverton and Bay Lake – where small town charm meets the great outdoors. We’re honored you’re interested in visiting and are excited to have you as our guest. Much like the red dirt that remains on your boots after a trek to the top of Miner’s Mountain, our story will leave tracks on your soul. Our tale was forged by the sweat, sacrifice and toil of the men and women who uncovered the minerals that built the backbone of this great region.

Over generations, the economy of the Cuyuna Lakes experienced a boon and bust as the mining era ended, and again with the close of the historic Scorpion snowmobile industry. However, as famously quoted by S.A. Sachs, “Hope rises like a phoenix from the ashes of shattered dreams.” Those who remained had a vision of hope, and it was decided our story would be one of resilience.
Community
The barren mine pits that remained were reclaimed by nature to create pristine lakes now stocked full of trout and brimming with possibilities. Trails worthy of global acclaim now wind through this beautiful land we are so proud to call our backyard. So, get off the beaten path and come explore.
Accomodations ................................ 31
This is a place for family; a regional hub for health care; an excellent school district that embraces technology. We’re proud to be a destination for tomorrow’s leaders and future entrepreneurs. We welcome you during any season to experience how our area is embracing change. There are very few times in life that you can be part of a story this big in a region this small.

The Cuyuna Lakes area’s business climate is healthy. Following is a sneak peak of new places visitors will want to explore.

One-on-one coaching is also available to help reach your overall health goals, whether it be weight loss, weight gain, muscle gain or just living an overall healthy lifestyle. Visit Main Street Nutrition’s Facebook page for more information.
A new multi-use pedestrian tunnel under Highway 6 was completed in fall of 2019 to connect the the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail between Portsmouth Mine Lake and Croft Mine Historical Park in Crosby. The $1 million project was led by the City of Crosby and provides a safer connection for trail users and Highway 6 motorists. The Cuyuna Lakes State Trail is 8 miles of paved trail within the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area from Crosby to Riverton. Abandoned by mining companies more than 35 years ago, the state recreation area contains six natural lakes, plus an additional 15 deep lakes that were former mine pits.
Murals
Through a grant from the Hallett Charitable Trusts, local volunteer group Projectrevive continued its mission to promote, beautify and unite the Cuyuna Lakes region during the second of three phases of the Cuyuna Meets the World through Murals project in July of 2019. The first two murals of phase one were completed in July 2018 in Ironton and featured the area’s mining (Cuyuna Lakes “Dig It”) and mountain biking (Cuyuna Lakes “Ride It) history. A new mural called Cuyuna Lakes “Explore it” painted by Jasper Andries is now displayed on

the Historic Spalding Building in downtown Crosby to honor a significant event of the area’s past. In August 1957, Dr. David Simons was launched from a capsule at the Portsmouth Mine to an altitude of 110,000 feet. During his 44 hours inside the Man High II capsule, Dr. Simons collected information on altitude effects on the human body, which was later used by NASA. He was the first person to see the curvature of Earth from space. Another new mural called Cuyuna Lakes, “Search it” was painted by Adam Turman. The mural is displayed on the Victual Creamworks building in downtown Crosby and depicts the area’s mining history (the pit lake) with current recreational activities including paddle boarding and scuba diving. The mural has an “I spy” theme, in which there are subtly hidden objects to find and identify.

About Our Waters
The best kept secret in Minnesota is Cuyuna Country. Our pristine lakes provide excellent fishing for a large variety of species, including trout.
SERPENT LAKE
MINE LAKES
Serpent Lake is a beautiful body of clear, fresh water covering 1,057 acres and is approximately 65 feet deep at its deepest point. Around its more than 9 miles of shoreline, amid birch, pine, oak and other towering trees, more than 250 homes and cabins hug its meandering shoreline. Located between the cities of Crosby, on its western end, and Deerwood, on the east, Serpent is home to walleye, northern pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass, crappies and other fish, which attract anglers year-round. At the lake’s largest public access point, Crosby Memorial Park, is a large, colorful serpent statue named Kahnah’bek (the Ojibwe name for serpent). It is made of Styrofoam, measures 20 feet high and 25 feet long and weighs 2,500 pounds. There are rumors that the lake’s namesake is because the waters are inhabited by a mythical sea serpent, but a more likely explanation is the shape of the lake.
The mine lakes are famous for trout. But, if they are not cooperating, try switching to northern pike. Submerged stands of timber shelter trophy pike, some pushing 30 pounds. The best technique when hooked to a behemoth is to start the motor or grab the oars and pull and snap your line in the underwater forest. The sunken trees also provide cover for hungry small and largemouth bass. Spinner baits are a great choice because the water does not have a lot of weeds and the bait can be worked through the stands of trees and stumps. A pan fish supper awaits if you stay near the underwater trees during low light. Use a cane pole to drop a line to a depth above 30 feet and pull up quickly to keep the fish out of trouble.

NATURAL LAKES Tired of gonzo fishing amidst jet skiers and power boats? Experience the solitude on
our natural lakes where walleye, northern and largemouth bass are the main targets. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon slab crappies or big bluegills. Venture to larger waters for that trophy muskie. Launch your boat at the many public access points or if you are looking for peace and quiet, bring or rent a canoe or kayak and relax on one of the many small lakes with limited access. Grab a map, locate a back road and find your own honey hole on one of our tranquil lakes.
UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER The nearby Mississippi River, with excellent populations of walleye and smallmouth bass, is navigable under normal conditions with a motorized boat but some prefer to float it in a canoe. The stretch from Aitkin to Merrifield is both beautiful and rewarding. Whether boating, floating or fly fishing, check with Oars-N-Mine Bait and Tackle in Crosby for lake and river conditions and the local fishing secrets. Visit CuyunaLakes.com or call 218-546-8131

Drive Along America’s Scenic Byway
SCENIC BYWAY The Cuyuna Range is along The Great River Road National Scenic Byway that follows the course of the Mississippi River for 3,000 miles from northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. The Great River Road is a well-marked series of different roads and highways that roughly follow the winding course of the Mississippi River. Travelers will find white signs displaying a green pilot’s wheel logo. The symbol denotes which roads are part of the designated route that was selected for its natural, cultural, historical, recreational and scenic properties. All along the Great River Road, visitors find interesting things to see and do, including many river-related attractions and designated interpretive centers. The Cuyuna Range is no exception. History MILFORD MINE MEMORIAL PARK
the adventure. Air Force Major Dr. David Simons rose above the earth 101,516 feet to become the first successful manned space flight in history. Dr. Simons provided the scientific research that would one day enable Neil Armstrong to step onto the surface of the moon and declare “. . . one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.”
TRAIL-A-SLED AND SCORPION SNOWMOBILES Milford Mine Memorial Park features natural and man-made habitat that was transformed into a recreation area to be enjoyed by area residents and visitors. It is a humble attempt to preserve the memory 41 miners killed on February 5, 1924, in underground tunnels after a nearby lake flooded the mine. Located in Crosby west of Highway 6 and south of County Highway 30, between Island and Milford lakes, http://crowwing.us/ DocumentCenter/View/6468
In 1959, the communities of Crosby and Ironton were in decline, still reeling after losing hundreds of iron ore mining jobs. Three men had come together, not to build a snowmobile powerhouse, but to simply survive. Incorporated in 1959, Trail-A-Sled, Inc. quickly grew to elite status among snowmobile manufacturers during the heady 1960s when rising public demand for these innovative little machines was creating an entirely new industry. Along the way, Trail-A-Sled,
Inc. and its subsequent firm Scorpion, Inc. built an industry-leading reputation for quality, dependability and design, becoming the second largest domestic manufacturer of snowmobiles and a leading employer in central Minnesota’s beautiful Cuyuna Lakes region. By March of 1978 the firm was sold to long-time rival Arctic Enterprises. The CrosbyIronton facility was closed in March 1980. Nowadays, Scorpion snowmobiles continue to capture the imagination of vintage hobbyists throughout the world, and the annual Scorpion Homecoming gathering in February attracts hundreds of enthusiasts to Crosby, the birthplace of Trail-A-Sled, Inc. and Scorpion snowmobiles.
