The concept of introducing listening skills in Learn English column is really interesting. From past two months, I tried listening to the audio and answering the given questions. It is really fun. The audio is only for two minutes, it would be good if an audio for five to six minutes can be given so that we can concentrate more on listening. Murali Krishna, Hyderabad

W

hen asked a question to more than 50 students from different schools of India, which sport do you prefer – indoor or outdoor, 95% students gave their thumbs up for outdoors instead of indoors. The same students feel that participating is more important than winning as participation opens up many opportunities and helps to challenge and know their strengths and weaknesses.

Students feel damn excited while enjoying their sports period. At the same time they feel low if any subject teacher grabs that period to complete the portion. How many of you have experienced this situation and how many of you have urged your teachers leave you alone during that period? Schools in India are gradually realising the importance of sports in the overall development of children, and how vital it is to encourage them to take up sports. The growing awareness of how sports contribute to the growth of children in terms of life skills, has led parents and school authorities to encourage children to take up sports, whereas previously the focus was entirely on academics. The realisation that sports help in the development of team work/spirit, trust, sharing responsibilities and working together towards a common goal has led to a development in the sports activities in schools.

Even though there is a growing awareness of including sports education as a compulsory subject in Indian schools, there lie some obstacles that are preventing its growth. A country with enormous population placed in 2nd position, sports is not considered as a profession, and hence investment by schools as well as by parents for excellence in sports is limited. Though today’s education system has made sports education a compulsory subject, in practice it is yet to get the seriousness and importance. Most schools lack sports facilities and inclination to provide them while a few schools believe that even academics can be strengthened through sports. Abolishing sports from the curriculum deteriorates the quality of lives of students. Hence, it is necessary for governments and other educational boards to ensure that sports are made compulsory in the curriculum.

peaking about the importance of sports S in education, G. Kiran Reddy, Secretary, Sarojini Cricket and Fitness Academy,

Hyderabad opines, “When a student plays a sport,

he or she learns sportsman’s spirit, learns how to be humble in victory and how to take defeat in stride. The student becomes healthy and develops a good habit of playing regularly and does not get addicted to mobiles, laptops and drugs.” Further, he avers, “Most of the parents, teachers and school managements express that by playing games, the student doesn’t study well. But, it is the other way round; the student balances both education and sports in a proper manner. The student not only learns time management, but uses his energy productively and also develops team work and team spirit that is an important life skill.”

COVER STORY Brainfeed interacted with few students and principals. Read on to know their views:

Q Dhruv Agrawal, XI Ahlcon International School, New Delhi

Keshav Maheshwari XI, Amity International School, Sector 46 Gurgaon

Ms. Tanishqua S. Cheyaden, X, Sacred Heart School, Kalyan

To what extent are you actively involved in sports and games?

Dhruv: I have devoted my life to rifle shooting. I have represented my school in nationals twice and bagged a silver and also bagged gold twice in state level. I have also tried my hands on other sports like squash and swimming. Keshav: I have been playing cricket for my school team for the past 5 years. I’ve also been appointed as the captain of the district cricket team and also taken part in the national level under 16 cricket competition. Tanishqua: I am actively involved in almost all sports activities in my school. There has never been a single day I haven’t played sports and games. I love fencing and cycling is my favourite pass time. I ardently believe that ‘All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.’

I actively take part in sports and games that helps to develop my social skills. Sports and games help in stronger academic achievement and help to gain confidence with logical thinking. Tejdeep:

Rohan: Sports and games keep me fit physically and also builds my confidence and moreover it helps me to make new friends. Sreecharan: I actively take part in all sports and games.

Q

Should sports be played with a competitive spirit or just for entertainment?

It depends; a game should always be taken enthusiastically and with a sports spirit. But when you are standing in the field for a match, you will get a competency vibe, which isn’t necessary to be with the competitor but yourself. Dhruv:

Keshav: Sports should be a balance of both competitiveness and entertainment. A sportsperson should be an amalgamation of a great competitor and also someone who knows how to take things easily. I feel that anything can be achieved if it is worked upon wholeheartedly and with a little bit of fun. Tanishqua: Sports should be played in a positively competitive spirit. It is not only about accomplishment of a challenge, but a learning experience for a lifetime. It is not about winning, but it’s about giving our best forever. A competitive spirit will make us more open and acceptable. Tejdeep: We can unleash the talent in us by playing with competitive spirit. Winning and losing is a part of the game and we have to accept it. Rohan: I believe that competition, when played by the rules, instills us with the values of fair play, sportsmanship and ethics. Competition can be a positive thing but only if we demand it is free of cheating and violence. Sreecharan: Sports should be played with team spirit. While playing any sport we should play with a competitive spirit and co-operate with the teammates.

What suggestions would you like to give to your school management on sports and games?

Q

Dhruv: My school has done a lot for its students till date. But it has to polish on its supporting as well as facilitating skills • Students need to be encouraged for taking part in sports activities • Sports should be equally valued as academics Keshav: To encourage more and more sports and more and more budding sportspersons. Tanishqua: I feel very fortunate that my school has provided us innumerable opportunities to excel in a variety of sports. I am sure the school management will leave no stone unturned to see its students excelling in various sports and will always provide what is best for its students. My only suggestion to the school management is to keep the good work on. Tejdeep: School management must include sports and games as a part of curriculum. Management should take an initiative to check whether a student is getting his/her training properly or not. Management should encourage students to have professional training on at least one sport, based on the student’s interest.

I suggest that number of sports period should be increased. Sports should not be optional but should be made compulsory. Coaches should give more training for students. Rohan:

Sreecharan: I request my school management to conduct an inter-school sports competition so that we can participate and win the prizes.

‘Sound mind in a sound body’, comment.

&

interested in any form of organised or recommended activity. This is the reason for the emergence of huge numbers of health-related problems.

2 Arti Chopra

Principal, Amity International School, Sector 46, Gurgaon

1

For any kind of growth or development to take place, it is essential that a sound healthy body, free from diseases nurse a free-thinking mind that is able to send out positive signals. A recent study shows that only 10% of the population is committed to physical activity; 20% wish to start but not adhere to exercise; 40% tend to promise to start an exercise programme; 20% need to be convinced to participate in exercise; and 10% are not

14

high august 17

Sports and games form an integral part of curriculum as it is essential to lay foundation of a sound mind in a sound body. The National Sports Policy, 1984 was the first move towards developing a conducive policy framework for the development and promotion of sports in our country. Since then a lot of emphasis has been laid on making sports integral part of curriculum. In its recent circular, CBSE has advised schools to dedicate 40 to 45 minutes for physical activities and games every day for students from Class I to X. Physical education is an optional 100-mark paper offered at plus two level. As all CBSE schools aim to provide holistic education to students, sports curriculum runs across in all classes and students are provided various platforms starting from inter-school to regional, national and international levels to compete and excel.

2

Should sports and games be compulsorily included in the curriculum?

3

Every school has sports embedded in their curriculum as they understand the importance of physical health and activity. Most of the schools these days take pride in the sports facilities they offer and in achievements in the field of sports. In the daily schedule of the time spent by an average child in school, games period features very well. Some schools are churning out national players and Universities giving admission under the reserved sports quota as well. Still many schools are lagging behind in sports because of lack of infrastructure, mental block of the parents and less inclination of students towards sports. As there are tens of other pressing issues consuming our national bandwidth, focus on sports tends to takes a backseat.

4

Sports education is limited in our country due to lack of training to instructors, managing sports equipment and lack of scientific approach to sports educations. Apart from schools, universities should also encourage sports education and they should also provide exclusive courses on sports. Qualified coaches should be appointed in the education institutes and more programmes on coach training should be promoted. Latest infrastructure and clear cut plans should be introduced in schools to popularise sports among children. The government needs to play an important role by allocating appropriate budget for sports education in India and proper implementation of it.

3

Why are many schools lagging behind to improve sports and games?

1

A healthy body, free from all diseases, can possess a sound mind, capable of good, positive and free thinking.

2

Yes, sports and games must be an integral part of the school curriculum. Sports help in bringing down obesity. Moreover, it develops team spirit and promotes leadership discipline with strength and agility as added benefits.

3

The prime reason why schools lag behind to improve sports and games is their geographical location and infrastructure. Many schools are unable to provide playgrounds to students due to space constraints. Students aren’t encouraged to play sports. Moreover, sports periods are substituted with regular subjects. In the given circumstances why and how will a student learn or play a sport at all? Most parents want their wards to focus on studies and become marks oriented to get a secured job. Most schools appoint sports teachers who aren’t adequately trained to deliver effective PE

4

Why is sports education limited in our country?

experience. Such teachers are absolutely ineffective in delivering a fruitful and effective PE period in the school. This outlook has to change.

4

Generally sports are not considered as a profession in India. Hence one finds schools as well as parents investing least time as well as resources in sports activities. Even though curriculums across the nation have made sports a mandatory subject, appropriate seriousness and importance is still lacking. Budding athletes and sportsmen have to struggle and survive

with the limited resources made available to them. It is important that the country provide correct infrastructure, financial aid, nutrition, physical and emotional support right from the grass root level. If not done, we will continue lagging behind in the race. India needs to recognise budding sports stars from every nook and corner of the country. Their talents need enhancement and they need a proper guidance on the path of excelling in their fields. august 17

AN ONGOING LIVE PROJECT

Baramulla

WOMAN BEHIND A MISSION

Udhampur

India is ready to set up world records one after the other whether it is space projects or railway projects.

I

n early August 2004, the Indian Railways embarked on one of its ambitious projects: the construction of a new railway line from the town of Udhampur to Baramulla district in Jammu. The arch-shaped 359-metre tall structured railway bridge, taller than the Eiffel Tower, is being built across the Chenab river and is slated to be ready by 2019. With an estimated cost of `1,110 crores, the project involves constructing a number of tunnels and bridges. The mammoth structure will be made with the help of over 24,000 tonnes of steel that is blast-proof and can resist extremely low temperatures and high wind speeds. Experts from various fields in India and abroad are involved in this project. Prof. Madhavi Latha, Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and working in the field of Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering at IISc, Bengaluru, has spent the last decade working on this project as a geotechnical consultant. Brainfeed interacted with Prof. Madhavi Latha. Excerpts:

The archshaped 359-metre tall structured railway bridge is taller than the Eiffel Tower. 18

high august 17

How did you get involved with the Chenab Bridge’s construction work?

Q

I am one of the few experts on rock engineering problems available in India. Hence the construction company AFCONS, who is executing the project, has contacted me.

Q

What is your role in this project?

My role is to assess the stability of slopes under various critical conditions of earthquakes and design rock anchor systems to make the slopes resistant to earthquake forces. What kind of challenges are you facing during the construction of the bridge?

Q

The challenges are many. They include

unforeseen weaker zones within the rock slopes supporting the bridge, huge variation in properties of rocks below foundations because of their large dimensions, open cavities that appear as surprises within the rocks, which make the stabilisation of rocks very difficult. Erection of arch elements is a big challenge because of the height of the arch as there is no ground support for the erection. For erecting the arch, the world’s largest cable crane is commissioned at the site. What is rock mechanics? In what way is its study helping you in the construction of the Chenab Bridge?

Q

Rock is a naturally occurring material. Rocks can be of different varieties, having different

Rock mechanics is the study of rocks, their types, understanding the properties of rocks and designing structures on rock. In nature, no rock is found without joints or faults since the formation of rocks is closely related to the tectonic activities of earth plates. For constructions on rock, studying the type of rock and the joints and faults occurring at the site is very important. Since the Chenab Bridge is a very tall structure being supported on two rock slopes, stability of these slopes is very important. Knowledge of rock mechanics helps in understanding the stability aspects of the bridge and in providing solutions for improving the stability of the rock slopes.

Tell us something about your research on soil and ground reinforcement.

Q

My interest in soil mechanics developed during my days of B.Tech at JNTU College of Engineering, Kakinada. This led me to choose geotechnical engineering as a specialisation for my M.Tech at NIT Warangal. Ground improvement has been my favourite subject since it is an extremely innovative area with no boundaries. Through the knowledge of this subject, one can do wonders in civil engineering constructions. The Palm Island in Dubai constructed in sea, support provided to leaning tower of Pisa to stop it from leaning more and construction of big underground metros below existing

cities without the ground caving in, are all examples of ground improvement and reinforcement techniques. My research on ground reinforcement started at IIT Madras, where I have developed innovative techniques to reinforce the soft grounds using polymers, to facilitate the constructions over soft soils, which otherwise fail. I continued research in this direction to extend my studies at IISc Bangalore. Some of my studies in this area include earthquake hazard mitigation using polymers and use of waste materials like

used rubber tires for building sustainable roads.

Q

Your future plans.

I want to do research on topics that could provide cheaper solutions for infrastructural needs of the country. I would love to get involved in the country’s dream of bullet trains. In a country that is spreading over regions with diverse soil properties and difficult terrains, preparing the ground for high speed trains is a real challenge and I would like to work on quicker and sustainable solutions for this problem.

OUTLOOK

EDUCATION

A HIGH SCHOOLER’S PERSPECTIVE

Aila Teja, Class XII Oakridge International School, Hyderabad

The smarter children take up science, and the not-so-intelligent children pick commerce. This leads me to my question, are examinations an accurate measure of intelligence? Let’s say they are, then why do we assume that art does not require the application of intelligence? In my opinion, without art, there is no life. The plate you eat in, the bed you sleep in, the toothbrush you use every day and the phone you can’t live without; all of them were designed by an artist. Yet, we say science is the only acceptable field of study. Why? Why carry heavy books to school when one does not enjoy what one is learning? These books only drain the joy out of our souls, which were built for inquiry and curiosity.

B

eing high school seniors and having the future, we all dreamed of metamorphosing into a nightmarish present. A flood of chaotic thoughts brim and boil in all our minds. Is this all worth it? Is staying up all night with artificially induced energy from energy drinks rushing through my blood, really necessary? I am one of the fortunate ones who have picked subjects for school that one truly enjoys. So, high school wasn’t as sorrowful for me as it is for some. Well, my choices are subject to scrutiny and ridicule. Who doesn’t pick science? Who picks commerce without math?

Success lies in the taste of happiness, feeling its course through your veins not for a fleeting moment of heightened satisfaction, but one that is constant, a sense of contentment.

The worst of all! Who takes painting instead of accounts? Me. Unfortunately, I see hundreds of children, walking briskly past the hallways, with anxiously heavy minds and tired souls. Although it is rather astonishing to find people of our time considering science as the only acceptable field to pursue, it is a phenomenon observed even in the most elite schools.

20

high august 17

We are shaping our lives, our futures, then why do what we dislike? It may be medicine, political-economics to art, if one enjoys it, one should pursue it. Success lies in the taste of happiness, feeling its course through your veins not for a fleeting moment of heightened satisfaction, but one that is constant, a sense of contentment. What is the purpose of scoring high grades that rise towards the top of transient paper charts, when every moment you studied for the examination, was absolute, mundane misery. The flaw lies in our definition of success. Success is surely not having a weighty bank account, or being in the highest ranking of positions, success is attaining unending joy from your work. This is only achieved when your life and work intertwine to mould into a harmonious oneness; one indistinguishable from the other.

ransportation is a vital component of economic growth of any country. However, the existing transportation system is crippled with high rates of fatalities, injuries, congestion, pollution, transportation costs and inefficient use of resources. A boom in the information technologies has given rise to rapid technological advancements in the transportation sector what with smart mobile devices retrieve users’ geo-locations, enabling ubiquitous communications, allowing instant

peer-to-peer interactions and mobilising services for goods and people. Technologies like connected and automated vehicle (CAV) revolutise urban and rural transportation systems like switching from sole vehicle ownership to shared ownership and ridership services. Such technologies have potential to improve traffic safety, facilitate

mobility, and reduce traffic congestion, fuel consumption and emissions. These emerging technologies will be providing opportunities as well as challenges. Along with advanced technology policy, planning, and operations strategies are equally important to market these technologies successfully.

This would be possible if all private cars requiring drivers, and parked 90% of the time, would be provided for public selfdriving taxis, a bus for a group of people and a car for one person for short trip. The Volkswagen Aqua is one such vehicle and is an effective solution to the multi-terrain travelling. Designed by 21-yearold Yuhan Zhang from China, the Volkswagen Aqua hovercraft concept is a futuristic vehicle powered by hydrogen and propelled by an impeller. Some future car designs include flying cars, talking cars and autonomous. With new designs and shapes the future vehicles will be environment friendly and safer than the current ones. august 17

t’s been two millenniums since the humble pigeon started serving humans. Earlier used as a messenger, it gradually took the shape of brutal sports and entertainment. Belgium was the first country to introduce homing pigeons to the world of racing. Pigeons have a unique sense of mapping their loft using earth’s electromagnetic field. Using low-frequency sound waves, they track their way back home. Racing Homer is a type of breed used especially for racing.

ndia is the youngest nation in the world and in the future, it is going to be the country with the most number of aged people. By 2050, number of senior citizens is likely to treble. With life expectancy rising by leaps thanks to advancements in medicine and technology, people are bound to live longer than ever before

There will be tremendous employment opportunities for those who want to make a difference in the lives of patients in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, clinics, and physician offices, and often provide or manage in-home care.

How to enter the field? One needs to have a medical degree to pursue specialisation in geriatrics. In India: Post MBBS, one can opt for MD (Geriatrics) which is being offered currently in major academic institutions.

As pediatrician is specialised for treating children, geriatrician is specialised in treating elderly. As India has a marginal number of geriatric specialists, the scope for geriatricians is vast. However, the future of geriatric medicine is bright as qualified specialists are going to have a very busy future.

GERIATRICS the future career

In USA: Post MBBS, after passing the USMLE exams and getting ECFMG certified, one need to complete residency (MD) either in Internal Medicine or Family medicine prior to applying for 1-2 year fellowship in geriatric medicine. In UK: Post MBBS, after passing the MRCP exams and spending time in core medical training, one undergoes additional training in geriatrics. of the population in 2011 and are estimated to grow to 20% by 2050. Projections beyond 2016 made by the United Nations (1996 Revision) has indicated that India will have 198 million persons aged 60+ in 2020 and 326 million in 2050. It is estimated that developing countries like India and China shall house one third of the total elderly population, nearly one billion by 2050. With a growing ageing segment (average life span in 80s now), elders would need specialised care under a geriatrician. How aware are we about geriatric care in our country and are there enough geriatricians to cater to the aging people? Geriatrics is a newer, emerging field of medicine which offers specialised medical services to senior citizens. Since this is a relatively new field in India, there is dearth of qualified professionals in this field. Government of India has now recognised the importance of geriatric education for the medical students. In 2012, recognising this deficit in senior citizen-geriatrician ratio, Medical council of India (MCI) along with Health ministry introduced MD (doctor of Medicine) in geriatrics. Why are geriatricians important and why can’t physicians deal with the aging people? Ageing causes physiologic or normal changes which one needs to be aware of to prevent adverse reactions. A geriatrician is trained to distinguish between normal and pathologic (diseased) changes in ageing. We are in an era where there is ‘pill for every ill’ and sometimes the older you get the greater

Q

Q

number of pills you take for multiple diseases. A geriatrician is specially trained to review medications, its interactions and the side effects. A geriatrician also understands the normal changes with age and its implications and focuses with a specific goal of improvement in quality of life. What are the skills required for an aspirant in the field of geriatrics? One should have strong communication and leadership skills since one needs to educate and communicate with patients and families on regular basis. Patience and empathy are paramount since end of life care is something that one often encounters. Finally one should have love for problem solving and love and respect for the elders.

Q

Q

Is there an age or symptom or sign when one should start thinking of seeking geriatric care? Typically one can start seeing a geriatrician after 65 years of age. But not everyone over the age of 65 years needs to see a geriatrician. Everyone ages differently and have varying degrees of illness and disability. Your advice to the aspirants Geriatrics is a fascinating field. A career in geriatrics is the future and it will empower you with the knowledge to take care of our elders in a compassionate and scientific manner. If you love bit of everything and love your elders, this is the field to be in. Lastly, your geriatric patients are always thankful and you get to hear such great and wonderful stories from them which never leave a dull moment.

EVERYONE’S TONGUE PRINT IS DIFFERENT

I

Find out how tongue prints can be collected?

t is a fact that finger prints are unique but it is amazing to know that our tongue prints are also unique.

KNO

W?

There are two main characteristics to measure a tongue print - one, the shape, the other, its texture. Some people have long tongues, while others have short ones and you will be surprised to know that many different shapes of tongues actually exist. As fingers have ridges like whorls, loops and arches, tongues consist of a number of ridges, wrinkles, seams and marks.

The tongue is the strongest muscle in entire body. However, it is also one of the most sensitive muscles as well.

id you ever wonder how a living thing can survive without a brain? You will be surprised to know that starfish, an invertebrate, doesn’t have a brain but has a network of nerves called nerve plexus underneath its skin. The nervous system in a starfish has a nerve ring that surrounds its mouth and a radial nerve extends to each arm. The star fish have eyespots at the tip of each arm that help them to detect shadows and changes in the brightness of light.

Invertebrates are animals without backbone. It is estimated that 97% of animal species are invertebrates.

I grew up in a family of sport lovers. My father adored tennis—he was a national champion—and my mother was a badminton player.

After school, our whole family met at the tennis coaching centre.

My mother would come from home dragging along a bag that had everything from hot milk and fruits to tennis clothes.

4

5

6

My younger sister, Reeta, and I would run all the way to the court right after school.

We would sit together on the side bench and try to finish our homework while waiting for our turn.

As a teenager, I travelled all over the country playing competitive tennis.

7

8

9

I didn’t have much money then and had to travel in unreserved train compartments. The travel would be exhausting as I hardly ever got a place to sit.

However, the benefit of third class travel was that students like me got the ticket at half the cost. But, it was hard to get hold of the form that would allow me to do so.

The Secretary of the Tennis Association issued these forms and was a very important person. He liked to prove his importance by making applicants wait.

The winner’s name will be announced in the following month.

10 Sometimes, I wasted an entire day waiting to see him. I had homework, exams, tennis and often extra fitness sessions but had to sit in a queue which never seemed to move.

13 The Secretary was furious and can you guess what he did?

16 I felt sorry for myself, but decided to work harder on my studies instead.

11 I would beat my fists angrily on the bench feeling helpless. On one such occasion, after waiting for hours in a queue, when I finally managed to see the Secretary, I couldn’t hold myself back anymore.

14 I was already a National Junior Champion in tennis and as was the norm, I was waiting to be nominated to play at Wimbledon.

12 I told him in a serious tone, “I have learned from you that I must always respect the needs of others. When I grow up, I will never make anyone wait like this. I will value others’ time.”

15 It had been my dream to participate in this prestigious event. But the Secretary chose someone else instead of me.

17

18

I soon began to top my class.

Today, when I look back at my life, I thank the Secretary for teaching me such a valuable lesson. He helped me become a better police officer who values people’s time. The End august 17

At the age of seventeen he became the youngest person

For his next adventure, he plans to fly solo around the world, making him the first person of any age to both sail and fly around the globe.
