AHRMA MID-ATLANTIC REGION VINTAGE NEWS
FUN ON OLD WHEELS! Story by Glenn Hershey Photos by Dave Larrabee, Kurt Flash & Brapp Mag It’s been awhile since we had an update on the vintage racing scene, so here it goes. By the time you read this, the AHRMA MidAtlantic/ Northeast awards banquet in York, PA will be a memory. A first time ever sellout crowd of 200 and no less than 4 keynote speakers’ were highlights of the evening. Icons of the sport were at the dais: Gary Bailey, “The Professor of MX” started it off with some early MX memories and beating the Europeans at their game. Paul Clipper, former Trail Rider magazine owner and author, joined in with a couple more tales and then introduced his former Dirt Bike colleague Rick Siemen, aka “Super Hunky”, the founding editor of Dirt Bike magazine in 1971. Rick shared several stories about Baja, California and Europe. Last but not least, we were honored to have John Penton, “The Legend”, to close out the evening. At 92 years old, it’s truly a treat to hear the stories of his racing and riding. Throw into the mix Off-Road & ISDT/E names like Jack Penton, Paul Danik, Jake Fischer, Drew Smith and Mike Murphy along with our new regional champions, a great time was certainly had by all. The following morning kicked off the Potomac Vintage Riders swap meet and bike show. It has grown into the largest indoor swap meet on the East Coast and thanks to head organizer Allen Brown, it was moved to a facility nearly 40 percent larger than last year. Allen and his hard working team of PVR members, family and friends sold out of vendor space again! Mike Slate and the Broom Works Vintage Racing crew put on an unbelievable bike show as well. 110 fine examples from all disciplines were represented. If you missed the celebrities the night before, you had a second chance to shake a hand, snap a photo, get an autograph or just chat about what their lifelong involvement means to them. Coming off of ten years of double-digit percentage growth in our cross

country series, last year proved even better than anticipated. We experienced a 26 percent increase in ridership in 2017 which represents a total of 845 entries over the course of the season. The race at Irish Valley was our best ever with 107 “old bike” entries. That was no fluke, as Johnny B’s was close with 99. Our first 2018 race is April 8 at Rocket Raceway near Three Springs, PA. Incredible terrain with elevation changes, great mix of woods single-track, old logging roads, ATV paths over mountain ridges on a 5 mile loop. Round 2 is a joint regional race with the Northeast region at Irish Valley MX Park in Paxinos, PA on April 21. Promising an all new layout and new 5+ mile course, our best attended event gets even better this year. See last month’s issue for more details on this event. L.L. Raceway is set for Round 3 on May 6 in Fairmount City in western PA. New last year, the venue proved popular with the riders and earned a return engagement. The fourth round is sweet, held at the Candytown MC property in Elizabethtown, the club goes all out to welcome vintage riders and provide a vintage-friendly yet challenging course…and great food served up cheap. Find the rest of our 10 event series listed in this issue and contact region coordinator Dave Kutskel for information at 814-421-1140 or dkutskel@yahoo.com. The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association is the best national vintage racing organization in the USA. For more information or to join go to www.ahrma.org. Keep in touch with our regional group on Facebook at “AHRMA Mid Atlantic Vintage Racing” for event flyers, race photos, updates and always something new going on. A lot of our new riders say they never even knew there were races just for old bikes, but now they had a taste. And it was good, and they will be back for more. Our group provides vintage bike friendly events designed to showcase the history of the sport with the emphasis on fun but competitive races. So rescue a relic, rebuild a barn find or dust off an old bike in the back of your shed and join us for the most fun on old wheels. KYMCO TRAIL REPORT Riding Whiskey Springs in February with the CMATVA In early February we saddled up with 16 other friends from the Central Mountains ATV Association and did 40 miles in a heat wave (15 degrees) at the Whiskey Springs ATV Trail System in the Sproul State Forest in Central PA. Hey, that’s no joke - for our last ride it was a balmy 3 degrees when we started and probably -3 below when we finished. My day started out from home in southern PA about 5:15 am to go pick up my ride courtesy of Kymco USA and Turf and Trail Equipment in Mifflinburg, PA. This full service Kymco and Toro dealership was kind enough to put me in a 2018 UXV700i LE for the day to go hit one of the gnarliest trail systems that the PA DCNR has to offer. The Whiskey Springs trail offers 50 miles of winter and summer trails, and is part of Pennsylvania’s State ATV trail system. It is located just southeast of Kettle Creek State Park and just North of Renovo, PA. Access is gained off State Route 120 - turn right at the Kettle Creek Inn and go approximately 1.5 miles then turn right on Two Mile Rd. to the parking areas. This is an awesome place to ride but make sure you get all the details on what is legal and what is not before you go. Maps are available at the DCNR station right down the road from the Kettle Creek Inn and online at this link: http://www.dcnr.pa.gov/Recreation/WhatToDo/ATVRiding/Pages/default.aspx You can also contact the Sproul State Forest for more info at: 570.923.6011 B

Majestic Trails is located in North/Central Pennsylvania in the Majestic Allegany Mountain region. The trail system is located on over 940 acres of privately owned property and family operated with plans for expansion. The trail system currently offers groomed trails with two loops totaling over 41 miles of one-way traffic on mountainous terrain that offers a challenging ride. Children are welcome here. We prefer that children get a safety certificate but it is not required. The Peewee trails help the younger ones learn at their own pace. We offer a legal place for all OHV enthusiasts to ride including ATV’s, Side by Sides, Dirt Bikes and Snowmobiles in the winter.

BrappMag Review Kymco UXV 700i LE EPS Courtesy of Kymco USA and Turf and Trail Equipment Mifflinburg, PA – February - March 2018
3” receiver hitch with a tilt bed and clean lines complete this unit.
KYMCO or Kwang Yang Motor Co, Ltd is a Taiwanese company that manufactures motor scooters, motorcycles, and ATVs for worldwide distribution. Founded in 1963 after splitting from Honda, KYMCO originally made parts for Honda. The company built its first complete scooter in 1970 and began marketing under the “KYMCO” brand name in 1992. In the 2000s, Kymco became the largest scooter manufacturer in Taiwan, and the fifth largest scooter manufacturer worldwide and just recently the company announced that they are the number one brand for ATV sales in France and Germany and number three for scooters in Italy. In early 2008, KYMCO was chosen by BMW to supply the engines for their G450 X Enduro bike and in late 2013, Kawasaki announced that their new J300 scooter is manufactured in partnership with Kymco. With manufacturing operations in the USA and their strong global position they are dedicated to investing heavily in the US market. In the past as Rec Rider Magazine we did several long-term tests of their product using both a side by side and an ATV for one year each and although their products aren’t currently built to compete in the pure sport market, we found them both very capable and reliable while being very price competitive. (and trust me, we put them through their paces)
The seats hold you in place with well placed gauges.
I’d like to throw a big shout out to both Kymco USA and Turf and Trail Equipment for getting us out twice on the UXV700 in the past months. Between riding at the Whiskey Springs Trail System and a trip to the AOAA Trails we put over 50 miles on this unit and it performed great. We had a traction issue on an icy rock covered hill on our first trip out only to learn that we had the tires overinflated in the stock Kenda 6 plys that come mounted up from factory. The good news is that Kymco equips all their machines with a factory winch which got us From Kymco USA out of our tough spot that day.
26 inch tires, 3 way adjustable suspension and a winch are on standard.
KYMCO’s UXV 700i L.E. EPS – Our Most Powerful Performance Sport Utility S x S
We found this machine to have plenty of power and to handle well. The EPS steering $10,399 MSRP* let us navigate the tight stuff at the Whiskey Springs and the seats and cab where well engineered with the driver and passenger in mind. The 2018 KYMCO UXV 700i L.E. EPS has multiple newly improved performance As I mentioned above, the Kymco line is not a pure sport competitor but the 3 way adjustable gas shocks on this machine coupled with great host of standard features makes this a must consider for any avid trail rider, sportsman or for general use around the farm, ranch or construction site. Find some info below from Kymco and follow the web link in our digital edition to get the full specs. PAGODA MC SEASON OPENER
Brandon Wolfe was on fire at Pagoda’s opener.
Birdsboro, PA - March 17-18, 2018 - BrappMag.com ALL PIC’S HERE
Mid-March took us out to hang with our friends at the Pagoda Motorcycle Club for their 2018 season motocross opener. Saturday was a practice day at Pagoda and this opening weekend brought with it a twist. The club there wants to do things to give back to the community, so they visited a local food pantry and found there was a need for laundry detergent. So club president Randy Kastle and the crew there got creative and came up with a way to get riders to donate either laundry detergent or $5 cash to take part in Pagoda’s first ever “gate drop practice” Twice during each paid practice day they stop and break to maintain the track for the riders who attend. This doesn’t include however the starting area and the thought
was, where can you go to practice starts. Voila – a vision was born. Bring us some detergent and we’ll give you some gate drop practice. Its Pagoda’s way this month to help the local community while giving the racers just a little something extra. I say props to the club and to the racers that stepped up to not only improve their starting techniques but to help make a difference in their little part of the world. Oh yeah there was racing too. Sunday it was still chilly and breezy but the faithfuls did arrive, and the racing was red hot as always. Check out the results below then head over to our website and check out the images from all classes. B

Motorama 2018 www.motoramaevents.com February 17-18, 2018 - By: Jim Bull
MORE PHOTOS HERE
Well folks, that’s a wrap for this years Motorama Events. For 40 years they have been kicking off our racing season in style here in central Pennsylvania. It all started back in the day before any of us had ever heard of the term “Arenacross”. The owners of Trail-Way Speedway in Hanover, PA only had one goal in mind and that was to offer the racers of our area a venue to race at in the frigid off season in the great Northeast. Fast forward to today and that event has morphed into its current status as the biggest indoor motorsports show on the east coast, maybe even the entire country. Here you can participate in various forms of racing, find products from every aspect of our industry, attend car and bike shows, check out the cool RC Car events and so much more. Of course, we go there for the arenacross racing and everything that goes along with that. This year we saw the return of the 3 wheeled Trikes to the show floor with my old friend and former cross country national champion, Ted Trey grabbing a couple of wins. Mike McDade was in the house showing the two wheeled experts around and Pro ATV racer John Natalie made a return trip for the second year in a row taking care of the four wheeled expert divisions. We saw Chase Yentzer take the Alta Electric bike on its first laps around an arenacross event and the first ever 50cc Dash for Cash heats. Several amateur riders had multiple wins on the weekend including Andrew Day, Ryan Friedly, Vincent Dillon, Jaden Palmer and the DePinho brothers, Kevyn and Kayky. You can check out all the class champs here in our pages then head over to the Motoramaevents.com to see all the rest. Check out Brappmag.com for some images and track down Ken Hovance @kenhovance56 and Mitch Rosenberry @mr587 for all the great action shots! B
Motorama saw another full house in 2018.
Ryan Friedly (#20 inside) dominated the novice divisions.
Jaden Palmer takes 4 class wins this year.
Mike Mcdade was your top expert on two wheels.
Andrew Day let everyone know that he’s back taking four wins. The trikes made their second appearance in as many years.
Kayky DePinho was on the gas all weekend.

THE TRANSFORMATION PROJECT YOU CAN DO IT TOO. Hey all, I know that many of you have been watching my posts for well over the last year, so you know that I’m on a new mission in life. Well, that is, an added mission to everything else that I am into. In March of 2016 I had just had enough. Enough of the feeling fat, enough of the feeling bad, enough of the clothe not fitting, enough of the Dr. telling me to lose weight. Anyhow you get the picture. And I think that’s what it takes sometimes, you just need to be fed up with where you’re at in life. I’ve heard that you either hate change enough to stay where you’re at or you hate where you’re at enough to change. And that’s when my own personal “Transformation Project” began. I knew I needed help because I had tried before, and I was serious this time around, so I finally gave in and asked for help. Thank goodness I found the answers I needed. Below is my before and after pictures. At the time I didn’t know how long this journey was going to take, but it has turned into a lifestyle change for me.

I thank all of you that have followed along for your encouragement and support. When I began it was all about me but as I go forward I see where so many others need the answers too. Just over two years ago a family member introduced me to a nutritional rebalancing system and that has been the key to date. I drink two meal replacement shakes a day that give me all the natural nutrition that I wasn’t getting before and I eat one good meal a day, and drink lots of water. We also cleanse out the bad toxins once a week. I’m learning that its 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. You see before I would go to the gym 3 or 4 days a week and spend an hour and a half on a treadmill or bike just literally killing myself and 6 months later I would be down 5 pounds if I was lucky. I just didn’t have the answers or the will power to eat the right stuff and the time at the gym was killing me. Today I can say I’ve lost 70 lbs and I’ve kept it years. I know what I’m going to eat and when I’m

It’s a new racing season – so I’ll ask you, how is your faith doing these days? You know I’ve found that having faith or having belief in completing a task is one of the most crucial elements in completing or accomplishing any task. A good example related to our sport would be as you line up to the gate do you believe or have faith that you’re able to get the hole shot or as you’re approaching that big double jump, do you believe you can clear it? Obviously, science does come into play here as we are all smart enough to know that you need to be able to carry a certain amount of speed to clear an obstacle or if you’re riding a 125cc bike you’re probably not going to get to the first turn as fast as your competitor who is riding a 450. But what if all is equal, do you have the belief or faith that you can get the job done? If not do you know how you can increase your faith or belief? Let’s see what the Bible says about having Faith:

Hebrews 11:1 - 1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 1 Kings 10:7 - 7 But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told to me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard. Mark 11:24 - 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Acts 16:31 - 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved— you and your household.” Pretty amazing stuff isn’t it? I know its hard sometimes if you’ve never been exposed to the truths in the Bible to understand where some of these thoughts come from.

Dealers Welcome
Can you think back to a time when maybe you’ve tested this truth without consciously realizing it and your mini miracle came true? How about that last scripture from Acts 16:31 – what if that were true? All good things to think about as we head into a new season and as always for prayer or more inspiration please contact me on Facebook or Instagram at Jim Bull Talks. B

Whether you believe in God or not just imagine for a moment, what if the above scriptures were true. What if all you really had to do was believe that you could accomplish a task, and it would be done. That if you ask God to help you, no matter what the task and you believe he will help, that it will be done.

I’d have to say that my life was very blessed to know Ruth Ann but I feel I may have been one of the unlucky ones. I only knew this wonderful human being for about 10 years or so. I know she was a huge help to me before I even knew her and she went to bat to help support me in both my businesses and as a friend.
Below please find some comments I found on Facebook from those who knew her as their friend. - I’ve truly never met someone so loving, kind hearted and selfless as Ruth Ann. - She’s a wonderful woman that we will never forget. - Ruth Ann Anders Benson was one of a kind. - She never complained. - Lord knows that you were a living breathing piece of his love on earth. - You were the greatest adoption mother a kid could ever ask for. - What a legacy she has. We can only pray we can touch as many as Ruth Ann has. - You will ALWAYS be loved by every person your gentle and kind spirit encountered. - You touched so many lives in such a beautiful way, I’m Honored to have had a friend like you in my life. - There are simply no words. - Ruth Ann Anders Benson was such an important part of our racing life. - Ruth Ann Anders Benson had a heart of gold and she was a great friend to many on this earth. - She was always there to give a helping hand or word of encouragement to all around her. - She always went above and beyond to help everyone, especially her motocross family!! - She was the most generous and caring person I have ever met! - The world has lost a wonderful person today. - She always made us feel like part of her family. - We lost the absolute best Mommom in the world today. - Such a wonderful, kind and giving person, she will be missed by many. - You were like family to us, we will always miss you. - Our Moto family just lost one of the best people ever. - Always selfless and always a ray of sunshine. - God bless you Ruth Ann. I could have gone on and on just copying and pasting these comments from social media all day long. If you knew her, you’ll know that they are all true. I’m sorry if you never got to meet her because she was all the above and so much more. Our prayers and condolences go out to her friends and family and the entire moto community. May her soul rest in peace and her influence be remembered forever. B
