Captains Quarters Happy August everybody, I hope you’re enjoying the summer weather. I know it’s hot but it’s supposed to be this time of year and before you know it, well you know what I mean, it’s white and the number 32 is usually associated with it, yuk. Anyhow, I don’t know about you but I particularly like this month for several reasons. First off it’s a month of champions in our industry. The flat track amateurs are just coming off their victories and accomplishments in Duquoin and the motocross amateurs are headed in to their biggest race of the year in Tennessee. So I’d like to give a big congrats and a big best wishes to all who participated, whether you came home with a trophy or not, you are all still champions for giving it your best. August also brings a few birthdays to my family as well as the first anniversary of Brapp Mag. Yes we’ve been out here doing this crazy stuff for many many years, but last August was the first release of this re-branded pub called Brapp Magazine. We certainly hope you are enjoying it and look forward to watching another generation of 50 riders turn pro. It’s been a year of mostly ups, but of course there are always a few downs just to make it interesting. Mainly we wanted to thank all who read, contribute too, help distribute, advertise in and just down right support what we do. A million thanks go out to all of you, without you it wouldn’t be possible. As we move into our second year we have some hopeful plans for growth. To begin with we would like to welcome our WNYOA friends from the north. They run a huge off road hare scramble series for both bikes and quads in NY and beginning with the September issue we will feature some of their events. We have some other things on our bucket list as well but will keep them under our hat for now. As always we welcome your feedback and ideas as long as it’s good for the sport and doesn’t get us thrown in jail. You can email us, call us or send us a message through social media. PVR Vintage Scramble 6/26 ROUND 5 OF MID ATLANTIC CROSS COUNTRY SERIES, WELLSVILLE PA By: Glenn Hershey

The Potomac Vintage Riders hosted vintage hare scramble held northwest of York was the toughest and tightest one so far this season. Word from the organizers before the event was “epic”, and it proved to be epic, very challenging and gnarly in spots! The totally wooded course was very enduro-like with technical single-track, several tricky rock gardens, up and downhill off-cambers, grassy pathways, slick log crossings and a few mud ruts thrown in….just my cup of tea! The morning race featured vintage iron up to 1974/75 while the afternoon race includes bikes up to 1994. This event even included a free hot lunch, drinks and dessert, can’t beat it! Both races were won overall by series regular Josh Miller mounted first on a modified Suzuki TS-400 and then on a pristine 490 Maico for the second race. In the right place at the right time, Josh was running a strong 2nd place in both races and then capitalized on the race leader’s eventual bike mechanical woes to take first place. In the first race, Thomas Joseph’s Canam tallied second place overall followed by Husky mounted Dave Kutskel. The second race finished with Kutskel in second and Mark Hummel’s Husky in third overall just four seconds behind.

Motocross For Christ Camp - 2016 Miles Mountain MX July 3-9, 2016 I just wanted to reach out with a short article and thank all who attended for making 2016 another great year at camp. I’ve attended just about every camp ever held since the beginning way back in the 200405 time frame. Each and every one has been a blessing to me and I just wanted to thank everybody who helps make it happen. The format changed a little this year for camp. In years past camp would be held at two different locations at different times of the summer. To ease up on volunteers this year both camps were held back to back in the same week at the beautiful Miles Mountain MX facility in Tioga County, Pa - truly God’s Country. A big thanks goes out to the Egleston Family for being the host facility this year. Between the two camps held this season we ministered to over 100 campers and many more adult volunteers and parents. Once again God

decided to bless the efforts and multiply and a total of eight people were baptized at camp in the pond at Miles Mountain by Pastor Dave. Motocross for Christ is a non-profit organization that “Connects Kids to Gods Love through Motocross”. Each camp offers faith based learning, motocross training, service projects, testimonials, great fun and entertainment and a peaceful solitude that only God can bring. This season former Pro racer Damien Plotts and his family were onsite all week to help with the training and activities at camp with numerous others coming together to help make this year’s camp another huge success. TOUGH LIKE RORR - INTENSE OFF ROAD RACE JULY 2-3, 2016

TAMAQUA, PA

KTM and Benjamin Kelly would rule the weekend at the Tough Like RORR event put on by the Reading Off Road Riders on the Reading Anthracite property just outside Tamaqua, Pa. This annual event attracts top riders from all over the country including GNCC Pro’s along with former Pro Motocross racer Broc Hepler and a host of local fast guys looking to claim their share of the $12,000 purse. The event consists of timed qualifying over a two day period to get into the main event. There were two classes offered on the weekend with Pro, AA and A riders together in one and B and 45 plus riders combined in the second. Each rider needed to compete in two different events held on different courses and their combined times in each event would determine whether or not they could advance to the main event where the top 50 riders regardless of class would compete on again a different course for the $4000 to win grand prize. Whew, got all that? lol.

Anyhow - Tough Like RORR consists of some of the most intense terrain you’ll find anywhere in this country to compete on. Just ask the guys that didn’t show up from last year’s event. Big rocks and large up and down hills would rule the day and from a reporters point of view I would say the theme is to just keep moving, not how fast can you go. Anyhow in the end it would be GNCC XC2 Pro Lites competitor Benjamin Kelly taking home the top prize followed by local GNCC racer and ISDE Team racer Jesse Groemm a full two and a half minutes back. Taking the checkers in third would be Yamaha mounted Grant Baylor over four minutes back. The event brought a lot of big name sponsors including Kenda Tires, Team Beta Off Road and Task Racing. Local motorsports businesses also joined the fray to help offer up the large purse for this race. Fly Racing Bucks were awarded along with other coupons and awards. Riders came from as far away as Canada and California with Dirt Rider Mag even sending in a test rider to try out Kendas new Ibex tire that has been designed for extreme off road competition mounted up on a brand new Beta motorcycle.

WHERE TO RIDE Allegheny National Forest - The federally-operated Allegheny National Forest has more than 100 miles of ATV trails. ATV trail season runs from the Friday before Memrial Day through the last Sunday in September. Winter season is from December 20 to April 1. Contact the Allegheny Nation Forest Supervisorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office, P.O. Baltimore County Trail Riders Association Gary Nixon Invitational

Mid July took us back to the Maryland State Fairgrounds for the second Annual Gary Nixon Invitational race put on by the Baltimore County Trail Riders and the Cockeysville Optimist Club sponsored by Highs Dairy Stores, Carroll Motor Fuels and Zippers Performance. This event offered several amateur classes to help fill out the night but the main event brought pro racers from all over the country to not only honor and remember the late Gary Nixon but to also chase the close to $8000 in payout that would come on the night with the 20 lap main event alone paying $2250 to win.

The day started with the heat races and the amateurs were sure to please. Tight racing in all classes led us up to the finals for the evening which kicked off with the Bob Botwell Memorial Dash for Cash. Bob was a local dealer in Baltimore back in the day and one of the founders of the Baltimore County Trail Riders. Bob was also a national number holder and a three time winner of the Barbara Fritchie Classic, and to this day holds the track record there for Triumphs set back in the mid 1950’s. The four heat winners from earlier in the day and the second fastest lap time determined the lineup for the DFC. National #1 Jared Mees who grew up racing here in Timonium would take the $600 to win to kick off the night followed by Robinson, Mullen, McGrane and Wiles.

Robinson chased Mees the entire 20 lap main event After that the future of our sport took to the track with Parker Dwyer coming out on top in the 50cc division. Jared Mees came out to present the awards to these young warriors before the rest of the amateur classes were run.

The Nixon race would cap off the evening with the top ten racers from the heats and consi’s advancing to the 20 lap final. The racing was intense throughout the entire pack but up front it would be Mee’s and Robinson running one two until the last turn on the last lap when Mees would get tangled up with a downed rider squashing his hopes for a dominating evening. Robinson would win the event followed by Wiles and Gauthier with Mees getting back up to finish in seventh. Hello racers and parents, The heat of summer is testing your endurance at the race track. You and your bike need to stay cool. I am aware that a large percentage of my readers are parents and not riders but we all can relate to the struggle on the track. I am sitting on a quiet trail in the city while writing to you. It’s shaded and I am enjoying the wildlife around me. Life has its disappointments and struggles but we can find peace in the midst of it all. Just like I have found peace on this quiet trail with the sound of ambulance sirens echoing in the distance. When I raced the four stroke pro am nationals I would seek Christ for strength and peace. I knew that in order to finish the long pro moto’s I had to rest and relax in the midst of the noise and pressure of the starting gate in Binghamton with the deafening sound of 40 four-strokes...I raced with ear plugs. When your moto is 30 minutes long you can find a rhythm, I have a very vivid memory of my steady breathing as a back drop sound while I continuously turned to Jesus for strength to keep my pace up. I was able to find a place of fellowship and peace on the track inside my helmet. I met with God and enjoyed his presence and the whole experience. Sure the lead rider would scream past me a whole lap ahead but this did not rattle my passion or cause me to crash, because I found peace. I was no longer comparing myself to the leader but just trying to run my best race not their best. In life God calls each of us to run our own race at the pace he has set for us; some will be richer some will be poorer. Some will look like they are farther ahead while others falling behind. But ..... There is a best practice, a right way to do things but we can not always look at others to measure ourselves. One man has a large new camper while the next has a single cab truck-let’s not look down on ourselves for our place in this world. The Bible says we can be content with a little or a lot - in Christ we can do either well. God’s Word promises if we put our faith in Christ Jesus (the one who died on the cross and rose again alive, the victorious son of God) then we have already won the race meaning the victory, the trophy, the checkered flag was earned by Jesus’ perfection not yours. Let’s reach out by faith and take our trophy and just be who Jesus has made each one of us to be. Keep the race on the track and rest in who you are in Christ off the track. In Jesus we are all equally great, important, and loved. Sure we need to hustle but not to get ahead of our peers - but as the Bible says we work to have; in order to give so we can provide for our family and the needs of the Church and community to make a BETTER AMERICA.

Our goal with RPM is to provide the kids with schooling, nutrition, protective gear, and bike equipment so they can reach their fullest potential on the track. This foundation was started because of Ryan Patterson’s passion for motocross and his dedication in helping young motocrossers. RPM was started by Ryan’s brother Mark R. Patterson (involved in motocross since 1982) and his wife Michele. ABOUT RYAN - WHY THE FOUNDATION WAS STARTED Ryan was 3 years old when he got his first bike and started riding. After that, the racing began for him. He was a great kid growing up and lived to ride and race. He was always at the pits and tracks riding and giving out advise and tips to the younger riders. Ryan was well known at all the District 6 race tracks in the tri- state area. On November 3, 2011 Ryan and his mother were murdered in their home in Hammonton NJ. With this tragedy and Ryan’s passion for motocross, RPM wants to keep his spirit alive on the race track and give back to the kids of motocross. We founded the Ryan Patterson Motocross Foundation in June, 2012. The Goal of RPM is to inspire, teach and guide the” up and coming” young motocross kids reach their goals and dreams, as well as trying to get new kids involved in our sport. MOTOCROSS SCHOOL RPM will be hosting our motocross school in September for our youth riders, at Englishtown Raceway Park NJ. Local pro- riders, motocross schools and training facilities are involved with RPM to be instructors. They are all willing to donate their time in helping us with this great cause and mentor younger kids. This keeps our sport growing for the future motocrossers. Some youth riders do not have the opportunity to attend a school to learn and receive help and tips from their peers. Schooling is important and anything the riders can learn from the pros will let them excel in their own class of racing. RPM RACE & SCHOOL @ ENGLISHTOWN RACEWAY PARK NJ Our Goal is to giveaway products the day of Ryan’s race as well as our school day. During race day, kids could come to our tent and pick up “something from Ryan”! RPM will be doing the free raffle during the RPM Race, at Englishtown Raceway Park NJ, held in his honor. RPM will provide protective riding gear and bike equipment, items that are used in our everyday events of riding and racing. Since the closing of Blue Diamond MX, RPM has teamed up with Rich Trevelise again for 2016 at Raceway Park NJ to keep Ryan’s race alive.

Valley Forge Trail Riders VFTR NEWS 2016 “Moonshine Enduro” preview. The 41st edition of the “Moonshine Enduro” takes place on Sunday, September 25, 2016 and is shaping up to be another outstanding Valley Forge Trail Riders and High Mountain Dirt Riders collaboration. VFTR and HMDR are applying the same formula that has netted the coveted ECEA Enduro of the Year award 4 of the last 6 years. This includes meticulous attention to detail of all event aspects including course layout and preparation, course marking and marshalling, timing, scoring and awards. Yep…we’ve been refining our “Moonshine” recipe for 41 years and this year’s event is shaping up to be a real humdinger. And all new for 2016, bring the young whippersnappers on Saturday, Sept. 24 to enjoy the first annual Half Moon JUNIOR Enduro. We’re giving the young’uns a taste of what they have to look forward to when they are old enough to ride the “Moonshine”! Start Control format--- no time keeping, the only clock you need is to get up in the morning 3.
